The officers and senior staff of Carnival Radiance are leading a crew of more than 1,000 on the new ship. They bring extensive experience with Carnival Cruise Line, averaging more than 20 years each. Their service has included launching several new builds.
LEADING THE JOURNEY
The Captains and Senior Officers Carnival Radiance has been commanded by two captains, one at the helm during dry dock and the other assuming leadership upon the ship beginning U.S. service. They and their team of senior officers comprise some of the most experienced mariners in cruising:

STEFANO BONICA
Captain Bonica, who commanded the ship during dry dock, attended Istituto Tecnico Nautico Caio Duilio in Messina and joined Carnival as a third officer in 2000. He was named captain in 2017 and has served on virtually every ship in the fleet during his two decades with the company.

ARIK MAZZI Captain Arik Mazzi
Captain Mazzi took the helm once the vessel began service in the U.S. Hailing from La Spezia, Italy, Mazzi served in the Italian Navy and joined Carnival Cruise Line as a deck cadet in 2000. During his 20 years with the company, he has served on a number of ships in the fleet, most recently as captain of Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Ecstasy and Carnival Victory.

GIOVANNI LOMBARDO
A 25-year Carnival veteran, Lombardo followed in the footsteps of his father, also a chief engineer with the company, when he joined Carnival as a third engineer aboard Carnival Ecstasy. After working on a number of vessels across the fleet, he was named chief engineer in 2007 and has served in this capacity primarily aboard the line’s Destiny-class ships.

CAROLINE BOURKE
The Cork, Ireland, native and 16-year company veteran was part of the inaugural team that introduced Carnival Radiance’s sister ship, Carnival Sunrise, in 2019. Bourke joined Carnival Cruise Line in 2004 and was promoted to guest services manager in 2009 before being named hotel director in 2016. The quick-witted cruise enthusiast shares how the good times are about to roll right here on board.
On Facebook, social media and his blog, his fun but informative takes on cruising and life have brought him hundreds of thousand of fans.
Over almost three decades, Heald has become one of the best-loved of Carnival’s many popular cruise personalities. Thousands of friends and fans eagerly follow his daily blog and frequent social media posts, yet he somehow manages to make each reader feel like he’s talking just to them. Heald first caught the cruise line’s attention in 1986, when he answered a newspaper ad and was hired to join the bar department aboard Carnival Holiday. He was promoted to social host in 1989 and then to cruise director in 1990, helping to launch Carnival’s first 70,000-ton ship, Carnival Fantasy. He was promoted to cruise director and then, in March 2004, to the newly created position of senior cruise director. Heald has launch 17 Carnival ships as cruise director and says two elements of continue to impress him.

“Certainly the areas that we have given to children are important,” he says. “The real estate that they have on the ship demonstrates just how important our space in the industry as a family cruise line is still.
“The one thing that has not changed in my 32 years is the crew,” he continues. “Ever since I started until today it has been the crew that have always been and always will be our secret sauce and I’m so proud of them all.”

I also have the best job in the world, I am the Senior Cruise Director and Brand Ambassador for Carnival Cruise Line. Over the past 29 years I have worked on our ships and watched the company grow and continued to watch the guests have extraordinary off the charts fun. Cruising with Carnival allows something that the world we live in tries to suffocate more and more every day and that is worrying about what others may think of us, what we do, what we say and how we live our lives. A RADIANT TEAM The ship’s entertainment director and cruise director are a dynamic pair.
A DYNAMIC DUO ARRIVES! Carnival Radiance’s Lee Mason and Katie Eastham, longtime favorites of Carnival guests, are sure to keep bringing the good times as the ship’s cruise director and entertainment director, respectively. Mason’s energetic personality and Eastham’s playful nature spearhead a vast array of entertainment offerings from the line’s award-winning Playlist Productions shows, including the new-tofleet Rock Revolution and Broadway Beats as well as Celestial Strings and Soulbound, to legendary deck parties, hilarious performances at Punchliner Comedy Club and audience favorites such as Hasbro, The Game Show. “As cruise director and entertainment director, you have to have more energy than all of our guests combined, and as you can imagine, that is tough to come by,” says Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line. “Lee’s and Katie’s talents are obvious – within seconds of talking with them, you can feel their enthusiasm and see their expertise. Eastham: Entertaining with Energy An award winner, Eastham is a versatile leader who has proven her perseverance, innovation and creativity at Carnival since 2012. As driven as she is organized, the native of Cheshire, England, has worked on 12 ships, serving as entertainment director and mentoring many of the company’s newly promoted entertainment directors. Mason: Going All Out for Fun Known throughout the fleet for his outgoing personality and million-watt smile, Mason joined Carnival in 2016 and has since served as cruise director for eight Carnival ships, most recently Carnival Splendor in Australia. The Cumbria, England, native has earned a number of accolades at Carnival as well as notoriety for helping to raise a record amount in a fund-raiser at the onboard Groove for St. Jude event: $40,000 on a single cruise, the most raised in 2019.

happens to be the mother of Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O'Neal.
“A LOT OF LAUGHTER AND A LOT OF LOVE” Carnival Radiance’s godmother, Lucille O′Neal, Ph.D., is proud to be the mother of NBA legend and Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal, but that role is just the beginning of Lucille O’Neal’s accomplishments. She’s also an accomplished speaker, author and active supporter of many charitable causes. A firm believer in the importance of education, she returned to school after raising her children and earned a bachelor’s degree from Bethune Cookman University (BCU), completed a graduate program from the University of Phoenix and was awarded an honorary doctorate from BCU. “Seeing Lucille’s longstanding commitment to her philanthropic efforts and that she is the mother of our amazing Chief Fun Officer, Shaquille O’Neal, we thought, who better to serve as godmother of this beautiful ship?” says Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. We asked O’Neal for her thoughts on her roles as godmother, mother and activist:

What does being godmother of Carnival Radiance mean to you? It was such a surprise and an incredible honor when I was asked to serve as godmother to Carnival Radiance, I immediately said “yes.” The fact that I’m joining a group of highly esteemed women – from celebrities like Kathie Lee Gifford, Queen Latifah and Katie Couric to members of the Carnival family such as Lin, Madeleine and Kelly Arison — it’s simply an amazing feeling that I can’t really describe.
You’ve worked extensively with women and youth facing many of the struggles you overcame. What’s been your message to those who are still struggling? Don’t ever give up. There’s an old saying: Tough times don’t last; tough people do. Even then, it’s important to surround yourself with people who lift you up each and every day. You never know what someone else is going through, which is why I am so passionate about being kind and encouraging pathways to success, especially for women and young children.
What has being mother of Shaquille O’Neal meant to you? Shaquille is truly one-of-a-kind. Not only does he like to have fun and make people laugh, he genuinely cares about others and donates a lot of his time to various charitable projects. I am so proud of everything he’s accomplished — both on and off the court — but especially of the exceptional way he represents himself and our family.
You did a great job raising Shaquille — what’s your secret? A lot of patience and a lot of love. It was such a blessing watching all of my children grow. It’s important to set an example and make sure your children realize that hard work gets the job done. Shaquille certainly lives this each and every day, giving so much of his time, treasure and talent to help others.
Shaquille credits you with giving him his strong belief in education. Why was that important to you? Studying hard and doing your best was not up for debate! While Shaquille always stood tall on the basketball court, I always stressed to him it’s important to stand equally tall in the classroom. Education is so important to success in life and all of my children have always had a passion for learning. When Shaquille walked across the stage to receive his doctorate in education a few years ago, I couldn’t have been more proud because I know how hard he worked and how much it meant to him.
You’ve also had a lot of joy in your life. What’s your idea of fun? My idea of fun is simple: being around my family and friends. Those are the times I cherish the most. And the secret to the delicious offerings at Big Chicken? Shaquille surrounded himself with the best team and chefs he could find. They all understood that it always starts with getting the best ingredients! Juicy, hormone-free chicken, along with delicious bread. From there, depending on your preferences, the rest takes care of itself.

LOOKING BACK AT A CLASSIC The biggest, the best and the most groundbreaking of her day, the new ship was a welcome addition to the Carnival fleet. Introduced in 2000, Carnival Victory was the third in Carnival Cruise Line’s highly popular Destiny Class series, following sister ships Carnival Destiny and Carnival Triumph (which later became Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Sunrise, respectively). It was groundbreaking ship in many ways. Weighing in at 102,000 tons, it was among the largest cruise ships in the world at the time — the first to exceed 100,000 tons — and was the most efficient, safest and most environmentally friendly cruise ship ever built to that point, and with a number of technological and engineering advances, it was the most sophisticated ship of its day. It is credited with further bolstering the success of the Destiny Class by featuring an extra deck of cabins and a distinctive décor. It also boasted hundreds of balcony staterooms, then a new concept on a cruise ship for other than premium markets.

The crew stands proudly on the top deck of Carnival Victory, the 15th of Carnival’s “Fun Ships.” The new ship was part of an ambitious program of shipbuilding for the cruise line, whose fleet now numbers 26 (with a 27th, Mardi Gras, coming soon!).

SAILING FROM SEA TO SEA It was designed by noted interior architect Joe Farcus, whose creative vision brought a new theme to each ship. Carnival Victory featured a variety of dramatic public spaces inspired by the world’s great bodies of water, including: •
The Greek-inspired Ionian Room, featuring Doric columns and reproductions of ancient Greek vases.
•
The Irish Sea Bar, a piano bar whose design elements included green leather booths, carpeting with a shamrock motif and paintings of Irish landscapes.
•
The Aegean Bar, a sports bar celebrating the Olympic Games with marble-like columns and murals depicting matches from ancient games.
•
The South China Sea Casino, with interiors dominated by a sculpture of Neptune surrounded by four mermaids
•
The Caspian Sea Bar, Farcus’ own interpretation of Russia’s famous L’Hermitage
•
Club Arctic, which, like the name implies, paid tribute to the icy sea with walls resembling blocks of ice and couches covered with a pattern of playful penguins.
The Seven Seas theme continued on the promenade, the central passageway through the ship, which was renamed Neptune’s Way Roman god of the sea as well as a sculpture in which Neptune’s trident is held aloft by four mermaids. Farcus’ eye for the dramatic was evident in those public spaces, transporting gues¬ts to faraway lands as they traversed the ship. The artistic depictions brought worldwide landscapes to their cruise vacation, allowing a visual escape to famous cities.

MEMORIES AT SEA Throughout its two-decade run, Carnival Victory created memories for millions of satisfied guests — and for crew members like Stefan Christoffersson, its first hotel director. Now vice president of housekeeping, he says one thing hasn’t changed in all these years. “The core job is still the same — provide excellent and personal service to the guests.” He still remembers the first day on the brand-new ship. “I loved seeing the ship coming together during the summer in Italy. We wanted to put our stamp on it and bring it out at number one in ratings — a hefty goal but we managed to achieve it. I’m so very proud of the team.” His favorite place on the ship? The deck 3 bridgeways (access from the deck 3 lobby areas). “They are a wonderful place to relax with friends, family and hearing the ocean waves only a few decks below. Those lucky enough to find this gem of an area return each day and you never forget you are on a cruise ship. Keep an eye out for dolphins, flying fish and whales.” Although the original has been transformed into a whole new ship, it will always play an important role in Carnival’s rich history and evoke fond memories from all who sailed with her.

EXTREME MAKEOVER In just 38 days, teams transformed a great ship into a stupendous one.
Transforming Carnival Victory into Carnival Radiance was a lengthy and highly involved process, with more than 6,000 contractors working around the clock to make Carnival Radiance a reality. The third in the line’s highly successful Sunshine-class ships, which includes sister ship Carnival Sunrise, this is the culmination of virtually all of the line’s different departments and lessons learned from some of the most experienced personnel in the cruise industry. “We learned many lessons from the transformation of Carnival Triumph to Carnival Sunrise, from both the project side to the planning side,” says Lisa McCabe, vice president of revitalization and hotel refurbishment. “Therefore, for some of the projects in this transformation, we made adjustments in layouts based on feedback after delivery and consumer feedback on Carnival Sunrise.”
DEMANDING AND REWARDING Incorporating familiar dining and entertainment options into Carnival Radiance was a somewhat easier task than creating an entirely brand-new concept on a refurbished ship like Big Chicken. Bringing the new restaurant to life proved demanding and rewarding. “We’re excited about the debut of the first seagoing version of Big Chicken, created by our Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal,” says McCabe. “However, integrating a brand-new restaurant concept into a renovated ship has its share of challenges — from sourcing materials to equipment and logos — but we worked closely with our internal design teams as well as Shaq’s own personnel to create a dining venue that we know our guests will enjoy.”

The transformation completes the nine-year, $2 billion enhancement program that added Fun Ship 2.0 features to the entire Carnival fleet.
Other noteworthy upgrades include an expanded line of Carnival’s popular coffee bar Java Blue Café, an expanded shopping experience featuring reimagined retail outlets and the relocation of a popular dining venue. “The popular Guy’s Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que venue is in a new central location in the aft area of the ship, with expanded seating which I know guests will love,” says McCabe. “It’s the barbecue at sea with a spectacular new view.”
FUN SHIP 2.0 FINALE Gus Antorcha, Carnival’s chief operating officer, is excited about all the new offerings the ship received in the final stage of the multi-year fleetwide enhancement, Fun Ship 2.0. “Carnival Radiance will offer a truly incredible vacation experience with so many options for guests of all ages, from toddlers to seniors and everyone in between – all at an amazing value,” he says. “Over the past few years we’ve introduced a host of branded dining and bar experiences, as well as top-notch entertainment choices and spectacular open-deck attractions, that have really resonated with our guests. The fun never stops evolving on a Carnival ship because “our guests all know how to have fun. They’re not shy and love to participate,” says Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment. “Everyone loves to be entertained but our tastes are all unique, so to ensure an amazing cruise vacation for all guests, we offer entertainment all around the ship.”
LOUNGES Piano Bar 88 is Carnival’s unique take on the piano bar concept, amping up the excitement with themed nights, engaging décor and spontaneous sing-along fun. Feel free to request your favorite tune from the piano man— he’ll make the room come alive. The Limelight Lounge does double duty on your Carnival cruise. In the early evening hours, it’s home to the Punchliner Comedy Club, featuring a hilarious lineup of comics offering both family-friendly and adult-oriented performances. They’ll have you laughing ’til you cry with their side-splitting one-liners and jokes. “With several comedians performing during each cruise, guests are sure to find a style of comedy they enjoy and because we have ratings for families and adults, we literally have something for all ages,” Nelson says. Once the comics’ time is up, the lounge transforms into a sizzling nightclub where a DJ plays your favorite tunes so you can dance until the wee hours. You don’t have to stay in the club to enjoy great music. Live bands perform throughout the ship. “If music is your passion, we offer live music and DJs across the ship,” Nelson says. “Our bands come from all around the world and rehearse for a month in South Florida before coming aboard. They know a huge selection of music and offer various themes through the cruise.”

LIVE SHOWS The multi-purpose Liquid Lounge is an expansive theater that’s home to captivating daytime and nighttime entertainment, including the larger-than-life adaptations of legendary contests and Carnival’s award-winning Playlist Productions. Hasbro, The Game Show: During the day, team up with your family and friends to win great prizes, all in front of a live audience. Put your gaming skills to the test with games like “Sorry! Playlist Productions: Once the sun sets, take in one of the Playlist shows. Get your fill of musical theater with Broadway Beats, “where we take the audience on a unique tour of the Big Apple with big musical production numbers,” says Nelson. Take it back to the era of flower power, tie dye and 1969 Woodstock in Rock Revolution. “We take the music of Woodstock and add a contemporary flair.” Nelson says. “This show is infused with state-of-the-art video imagery, concert choreography and even a fleet of drones that fly above the stage in perfect synchronicity.” Don’t miss the gothic-inspired show Soulbound that incorporates R&B classics and mind-blowing special effects, or the rock and pop soundtrack of Celestial Strings with elegant and ornate sets and talented musicians playing live electric strings.

KID STUFF Fun with The Cat in The Hat: Families will love exploring the world of Dr. Seuss on board, from the interactive play during Seuss-a-palooza Parade and Story Time with their favorite Dr. Seuss characters to picking out their own book from the Dr. Seuss Bookville library filled with colorful, whimsical furniture. The entire family can enjoy breakfast with The Cat in The Hat and Friends with lots of delicious choices, including, of course, the signature dish: Green Eggs and Ham. Camp for Toddlers to Teens: Hanging out in their own space is always fun for the toddler, pre-teen and teen sets, and Carnival’s got them all covered. At Camp Ocean, kids 2 to 11 years old will enjoy age-appropriate fun including arts and crafts, games, songs and more. Circle “C” is where 12- to 14-year-old youths watch outdoor movies and join dance parties; at Club 02, the fun times for 15- to 17-year-olds include karaoke jam sessions and video game tournaments. “From our newly redesigned Camp Ocean for kids, to the brand new SkyCourse and Waterworks, kids of all ages have lots to do,” Nelson says.

Slide down the 203-foot-long AquaTunnel slide or Carnival’s signature 212-foot-long Twister (but why not try both?) as you enjoy the exhilarating twists and turns! The tykes will also love splashing around in the kiddie area with its 75-gallon PowerDrencher, which elicits shrieks of delight from youngsters every time it tips over.

The Carnival cruise experience is all about fun, relaxation and great food. Carnival’s culinary team made it all about the guest when implementing the ship’s culinary options. “The upgrades to the dining experience on Carnival Radiance incorporate guests’ needs and what they’re looking for,” says Cyrus Marfatia, vice president of culinary and dining for Carnival Cruise Line. What do guests on Carnival love? They love seafood and barbecue and “they are looking for the freshest seafood possible. And we deliver that on Carnival Radiance with Bonsai Sushi Express, along with barbecue created by our longtime partner Guy Fieri,” he says. Carnival guests also want a prime dining experience. “They’ve told us that and Fahrenheit 555, the steak house, provides that.” Marfatia and his team saw the popularity of these concepts on other Carnival ships “so we knew we needed to bring these to Carnival Radiance because Carnival guests love them.”

Big Chicken, NBA legend Shaquille O’ Neal’s new restaurant at poolside on the Lido Deck. “We’re very excited about Big Chicken because it’s new to Carnival,” Marfatia says. “The quality of the food is excellent. We are confident it’s going to be loved by our guests. People really love fried chicken – it’s one of the most popular dishes in the main dining room. Now with Big Chicken guests can enjoy the best fried chicken at sea for lunch and even breakfast in the restaurant at the Lido Marketplace.” Dining Delivered: The HUB App Always putting the guest experience first, Marfatia is also excited about integrating shipboard dining into Carnival’s HUB App for smartphones. “With the app you have the ability to order pizza and beer from anywhere on the ship – you just take a selfie and indicate the location and it’s delivered right to you,” he says. “It’s also great for facilitating the dining room experience. Through the app, guests alert us when their ready to dine and we let them know they’re table is ready so there’s no waiting.” The app can be also be used for specialty dining reservations at Cucina del Capitano and other restaurants. A LITTLE CHAT WITH THE BIG MAN We had a few questions for Shaquille O’Neal on his restaurant, Big Chicken, making its maritime debut on Carnival Radiance after successful runs in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

How did you decide to bring Big Chicken to sea on Carnival Radiance? I was totally blown away the first time I came aboard a Carnival cruise ship. Part of the reason cruises are so great is because there are so many choices on board, including lots of amazing restaurants. I had already opened Big Chicken in Las Vegas and most recently in Los Angeles, so it was only natural to bring this concept to Carnival Radiance and soon [in November 2020], Mardi Gras. The Carnival team and I are making sure everything is ready for them to officially open, but I can’t wait for guests to be able to try! Big Chicken’s based on your mom’s recipes. What was it like working with Carnival’s culinary team to perfect these homemade recipes? Carnival is all about fun, family and food. My mom not only has a unique recipe but puts lots of love and care into prepping and cooking her chicken to make it so tasty. The team at Carnival and I worked
very hard to make sure the sandwiches served at Big Chicken were up to my mom’s standards. I wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s the secret to making the perfect chicken sandwich? My mom always said it all starts with the ingredients. At Big Chicken, we only use Naked Truth chicken which has no preservatives and is hormone free. We also have the tastiest homemade toppings and of course the best buns you can find. The chicken needs to be breaded by hand and fried to a golden brown then topped with cheese, pickles, or whatever you’d like. I could take down two or three right now! What’s your favorite item on the menu? Wow, that’s a tough question. Right now, I have to say my favorite is the Big Aristotle with muenster cheese, fried onions, bacon and sweet and smoky BBQ sauce. Pair this with potato salad, homemade sweet and spicy pickles and my signature jalapeno slaw – delicious.

If you’re Carnival Radiance, you move to one of the world’s busiest and most popular cruise ports: Galveston, Texas. Carnival Radiance will reposition to Galveston in May 2021 to begin sailing to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, including the Panama Canal. The move will bring to four the number of Carnival ships home-ported in Galveston; the ship will join Carnival Breeze, Carnival Dream and Carnival Vista. With these four ships, Carnival will carry an estimated 900,000 guests annually from Galveston — more than any other cruise operator — providing an unprecedented variety of cruise durations, destinations and amenities from Texas. “Carnival is already the most popular cruise line from Galveston, attracting vacationers from all across the Southwest and beyond,” says Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “With these enhancements, we’re providing our guests with more voyages, more destinations and more choices from Texas than ever before.”

Galveston port officials are just as excited about the repositioning as Carnival. “As North America’s fourth busiest cruise port, the Port of Galveston is pleased to welcome Carnival Radiance,” says Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves CEO and port director. “Since Carnival made Galveston its home port almost 20 years ago, more than 7.5 million Carnival passengers have embarked from our wharves. As we grow, we’ll continue to focus on delivering great service to Carnival and its passengers.” Itineraries are subject to change, but Carnival plans to offer a full schedule of five- to 14-day voyages. The schedule kicks off with a 12-day Carnival Journeys cruise from Port Canaveral through the Panama Canal. Destinations from Galveston include Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, Key West, Limón, Mahogany Bay, Nassau and Progreso. In late 2021 and early 2022, the ship will offer 14-day Carnival Journeys cruises throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America and the Panama.

ALL GO FOR LAUNCH Port Canaveral’s brand-new $163 million cruise terminal — known as the Launch Pad — is the home of Carnival’s next ship, Mardi Gras. The two-story, 187,000-square-foot terminal will feature a high-tech baggage processing facility and a state-of-the-art check-in and security area. The six-story parking garage will accommodate 1,800 vehicles. “We’re building a great new terminal for an innovative new ship,” port CEO Capt.
