“Out of the Frying Pan” and “Start Me Up!”
“Breaking His Silence”
“Do Not Rouse”
Grace Bascos dines for a living. So when Guy Fieri introduced a new breakfast menu, we naturally asked Grace for her favorite dish. “The carne asada chilaquiles: tortillas fried in ranchero sauce, topped with cheese, carne asada and eggs; it’s basically breakfast nachos.” She also interviewed Hell’s Kitchen winner Scott Commings and thinks she could handle the heat in Gordon Ramsay’s TV kitchen. Her strategy: “Just keep your head down and cook fast.”
Freelance writer Mark Gray remembers hearing Rod Stewart’s voice “coming through my dad’s car radio as a kid. He was definitely a part of my childhood.” This was the second time Mark interviewed Stewart this year; the first was for People magazine. “I walked onto the plane and there he was, wearing bright pink pants,” Mark recalls. “He kept calling me ‘mate.’ For that moment, I was Rod Stewart’s ‘mate.’ I think I’ll put that on my tombstone.”
The setting: The Cromwell; the script: a love story. That was what we told fashion photographer Robert John Kley when we unleashed him on the suites of the boutique hotel. He brought the concept to life for this issue’s fashion and jewelry pictorial. “The Cromwell has a classy elegance,” he says. “The inspiration for the shoot was to live in the moment. It’s about a weekend romance when the sparks fly. Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right?”

“Date Night” and “Do Not Rouse”
“Date Night”
“Let’s Do Brunch”
We challenged stylist Christie Moeller to find the city’s romantic side. For “Date Night,” she sought out The Forum Shops at Caesars, and then when the tale got intimate, her eye turned to The Cromwell for its “quiet, sophisticated sexiness.” For Christie, it was the ideal spot. “We just knew we had to shoot a love story there!” Christie’s must-haves for a romantic evening on the road? “A bubble bath, champagne and music.”
Photographer Jerry Metellus was tasked with telling the story of a first date. “We shot in The Forum Shops for the unique backgrounds and overall experience,” he explains. “You can come to prep and beautify yourself, navigate the mall and then end up in one of the many fine eateries at the end of a successful shopping day. It’s the perfect date.” For Jerry, that means stops at John Varvatos and H&M, then dinner at either Spago or Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab.
“Breakfast has always been my favorite meal. It’s awesome anytime of the day,” says photographer Sabin Orr. So when we set out to photograph some of the Strip’s best brunch plates, he was excited to capture all the food glory on film. “Brunch, to me, glorifies breakfast by adding some savory lunch items to choose from,” Sabin says, adding, “If there was such a thing as ‘Brinner,’ I’d be all about that too!”

WORLD-FAMOUS PUPPET MASTER

AND HIS CAST

PUPPETRY
Jeff Dunham was eight years old when he saw a Mortimer Snerd dummy on a toy-store shelf. He pointed it out and his parents bought it for him. Then he checked out a library book on ventriloquism. Weeks later, he (and Mortimer) gave a book report on Hansel and Gretel, during which he “spent the majority of the time picking on classmates,” he recalls. “The motivation to continue was simply—I’d gotten laughs and successfully entertained my classmates.” Tell us about your new Planet Hollywood show. It’s not your mother’s puppet show. I’ve taken an old art form and put a new face on it. It’s stand-up comedy, but the comedic vehicle is ventriloquism with well-defined and relatable characters, wrought with conflict and tension. Is there a meaning behind the show title, “Not Playing with a Full Deck?” Most of the titles we come up with give a nod to the fact that what I do for a living isn’t exactly normal. For decades, Hollywood has portrayed the ventriloquist as being a bit odd at best, and understandably so. I’m tipping between nuts and not nuts: It’s what you’d expect from a guy who’s spent 10,000 hours perfecting his craft by carrying on in-depth conversations with himself.
Your characters are very opinionated. How do you give them a personality and voice? I never use my act to express my own feelings, or to push a political agenda or moral beliefs. Like a playwright, I’ve tried to create characters who are believable and real. So whatever these characters say, I’m doing my best to make sure they stay true to who they are. Talk about Walter—the grumpy old man. Walter is a curmudgeon who tends to lean right politically. He’s outspoken. Like a lot of old people, he speaks his mind and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about him. It makes for great comedy to let him say what he wants and argue the opposite side. What was the inspiration for Bubba J? Mortimer Snerd. It’s difficult to name a popular group of characters that doesn’t have a goofy member in the troupe. There’s just something charming about being innocently stupid and not caring.

They do that here, day in and day out.”

The HydraFacial® is a favorite of celebrities, such as Kate Winslet and Beyoncé, as well as brides seeking glowing, radiant wedding-day skin.
As we age, our skin changes. We lose moisture, elasticity decreases, and our cell turnover (natural exfoliation) slows down. This leads to dull skin, which not only looks and feels dry, but causes wrinkles to appear. How your skin naturally ages depends on a variety of factors: lifestyle, diet, heredity and other personal habits. One of the best treatments available today to combat dryness and lackluster skin is a HydraFacial®. Its techniques against aging are multifaceted and noticeably effective. Kristin Carpenter, the spa director at Qua Baths & Spa in Caesars Palace, explains, “ The HydraFacial® is a soothing treatment that works in conjunction with advanced medical technologies. It infuses antioxidants, deep exfoliation, a collagen mask, microdermabrasion and LED light therapy—all in one treatment.” THE HYDRAFACIAL® IS A RESULTS-DRIVEN TREATMENT THAT INSTANTLY LEAVES YOUR SKIN LOOKING RADIANT AND REFINED.

With a deep exfoliation, the infusion of antioxidants is maximized (say good riddance to free radicals); the use of light therapy increases circulation and healing. The treatment is so effective that it has been shown to stimulate fibroblasts— the cells that produce collagen. “ The HydraFacial® is truly a results-driven treatment,” Carpenter concludes. “As with all facials, it’s best done in a series. But even after just one treatment, you will see a visual difference.”

Movie producers have been drawn to Las Vegas for decades. What Happens in Vegas, with Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, was filmed in a Jonathan Adler-designed Mega Suite at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Portions of Rain Man were shot in the palatial two-story Emperors Suite at Caesars Palace—the inspiration for the swank digs in The Hangover. But when the Wolfpack returned for The Hangover Part III, they filmed in the plush Constantine Villa at Caesars Palace, which also appeared in Think Like a Man Too. The 1988 hit Rain Man saw actors Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise dancing in the window of the Emperors Suite, riding resort escalators and playing cards in the casino at Caesars Palace.

A SHOWGIRL’S
GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS JUBILEE DANCER JULIE TABER SHARES HER HOT LIST
Best part of being a Las Vegas showgirl is… getting to wear the gorgeous Bob Mackie and Pete Menefee costumes, but also being a part of history. The showgirl is a Las Vegas icon.
My favorite lunch spot is… Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Las Vegas. It’s so lovely to sit outside on a nice sunny day and enjoy the atmosphere of the Strip all around you.
The question I get asked most is… does every girl need to be the same height and weight. The answer is no, thank goodness! The showgirl is about celebrating the female form and womanly curves.
My guilty food pleasure is… hands down, dessert at Serendipity 3!
Wearing one of the 35-pound headdresses feels like… you are carrying a small child on your head. But please, don’t try this at home. I take family or friends visiting for the first time… to the world-famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign! Most Vegas visitors don’t realize… that just 45 minutes off the Strip we have amazing mountains for hiking and biking. Red Rock Canyon and Mount Charleston are that close.
My favorite Las Vegas performer is… Céline Dion. It just doesn’t get much better than her. She’s an outstanding singer and passionate performer. The top small production show is… Penn and Teller. They are very entertaining in a non-traditional way. The best place to take a selfie is… in front of the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, which is stunningly lit up at night. It’s also hilarious to confuse your friends by telling them you are going to Vegas, then post a pic of yourself at the Eiffel Tower.

Although not technically brunch, the King of Buffets is not to be missed. Dozens of chefs work nine live cooking stations to create dishes such as juicy fried chicken with waffles and fresh berries, roasted South Carolina shrimp and grits, and baked-to-order soufflés.

Originally coined in Britain during the late-19th century to describe a Sunday meal for “Saturday-night carousers,” brunches today are leisurely midday meals featuring either large spreads of breakfast and lunch offerings or a special menu of lighter snacks—both usually accompanied by glasses of champagne, bubbly mimosas or Bloody Marys.
Mesa Grill CAESARS PALACE
Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill brunch menu brings on the heat. Spicy scrambled eggs with green onion, jalapeño and mustard-glazed ham really pack a punch, while other zesty Southwestern flavors include a spicy chicken and sweet-potato hash or scrambled-egg chilaquiles with a roasted-tomatillo sauce. “It teaches you to be able to talk to an audience one-on-one, as if you’re talking to one person. I always thought I was pretty good at that. I’m very spontaneous; I don’t have a script like some of the people who have played Vegas,” he explains. “I don’t say the same thing every night. I do swear now and then, just occasionally, but not for the effect, just because I feel like it. I like to be as spontaneous as I can, and Vegas has taught me that. Everyone seems to hang on my every word and I feel very responsible about what I say now.” That is, of course, when he’s verbally speaking. Lately, it’s been the written word that has been keeping the rocker busy. In 2012, he released an autobiography. During his research, he became interested in songwriting again, something he hadn’t done in about 20 years. In May 2013, he released Time, which showcased his renewed love for songwriting. And in the spring of 2015, he’s planning on releasing yet another album, one that will feature not only a lot of Celtic melodies, but he says he’s also experimenting with a reggae and ska song.
“As long as the voice is there, I’ll keep going.”
“Believe it or not, I’ve got ten tracks ready for the new album. I’ve got songs coming out of my bum at the moment,” he says with a laugh. “I just wish I could have had this twenty-five or thirty years ago. I was enjoying myself too much then.”
«
Don’t let him fool you; he’s enjoying his life now, too. Asked how old he feels, he’s quick with an answer. “It’s all about being comfortable with what you do, who you are, what you wear, what you say and who you mix with. I’m very comfortable in the suit I’m wearing at the moment," he explains. "When I do feel uncomfortable, I will step aside and there’s no doubt that day will come. We all know nothing can last forever.”
In May 2013, Rod Stewart released Time, an original rock album. It entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, besting the British record for the longest gap between chart-topping albums by an artist. Stewart’s last studio album to top the UK chart was A Night on the Town in 1976.
This begs the question: How long does the “Forever Young” soon-to-turn 70-year-old plan on continuing to perform and record new music? The way Stewart sees it, the answer to that question isn’t actually his decision, for the most part. “As long as the voice is there, I’ll keep going. I’ve been really lucky with my voice. It’s stayed in pretty good shape,” the raspy-toned singer says. “It gets a bit of a battering now and then—four shows in six days—but I look after it as if it were the crown jewels. I’m paranoid about it to the point that I'm drinking tons of water, getting plenty of sleep, not talking, and doing an hour and a half of warm-ups before I sing. It’s my instrument and I protect it, like I said, like it’s the crown jewels.”

THE MAESTRO SALVATORE CALABRESE BOUND BY SALVATORE THE CROMWELL COCKTAIL: THE CROMWELLIAN “A great cocktail has to satisfy three elements: eyes, nose and mouth. It has to look great. It has to smell divine and taste incredible,” says world-renowned mixologist Salvatore Calabrese. His concoctions at The Cromwell’s swanky lounge, Bound by Salvatore, represent just that: from his iconic Breakfast Martini—born after his wife served him toast with marmalade (flavors he adapted into a cocktail)—to his Vegas-centric champagne coffee drinks. “Vegas never sleeps,” he says, “and everyone has an espresso martini. Instead, I brewed coffee but replaced the water with champagne.” The result? Perky pick-me-ups such as the Madame Moka, a champagne-flavored espresso mixing Hennessy V.S.O.P. cognac, Disaronno, sugar syrup and spices; and The Cromwellian, with Cocchi Americano-flavored espresso, Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Cherry Heering brandy and sugar syrup.

“Cocktail menus are an opportunity to make a bar a destination experience,” says Abou-Ganim. “If you love the drink, I guarantee you’ll come back the next time you’re in Las Vegas.”
“At Lobby Bar, we celebrate the past but embrace the future,” Tony Abou-Ganim explains as he raises his glass. Known as The Modern Mixologist, he took over the renovated space last summer, yet was careful to “maintain an old-school vibe” while elevating the experience with an extensive cocktail menu. “We wanted to hold on to that classic feel,” he says. “You can imagine Frank Sinatra and the boys coming in and having a drink in the Lobby Bar.” In fact, Abou-Ganim pays homage to Ol’ Blue Eyes with an impressively smooth cocktail called The Chairman’s Manhattan. It blends the higher proof Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select with vermouth and pimento bitters.

UPPING OUR GAME Sports bar or sports book? Deciding where to watch the game is nearly as important as the team you’re backing. With football in full gear, we’re zeroing in on the city’s best sports bars. Fans checking out The LINQ Promenade can catch their favorite team in action at 12 locations (and on 248 flat-screens).
TAG Sports Bar inside The LINQ Hotel & Casino has 40 high-definition televisions, tables with self-serve drafts, and more than 300 bottled beers. What more can you ask for? How about cutting-edge digital casino games, touch-screen tabletop gaming units (think Frogger, checkers and chess) and a blackjack hologram dealer. “ TAG brings together the most advanced gaming technology, an extensive beer menu and a full-blown sports experience,” says Eileen Moore, LINQ Hotel’s regional president and general manager. Nearby, Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar serves up twists on American classics like his spicy Fireball Whisky Wings and the mammoth Mac-n-Cheese Bacon Burger, to be washed down with a Bloody Mary or cold brew. On The LINQ Promenade, Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery puts you at the game. With 44 televisions, including two 15-foot screens—the Celtic-themed space offers a wild scene. “Our sound system allows us to play multiple games,” explains assistant general manager Roland Paz. “We’ll leave it up to the fans to dictate how we broadcast the sound. If you and your friends show up as face-painted fanatics—well, you win.” Beer lovers win at Yard House. The restaurant’s selection of 160 drafts rivals that of any bar in Las Vegas, while offering an equally stout menu containing 130 items such as burgers, lettuce wraps, flatbreads and street tacos. Over at Brooklyn Bowl, L Bar has a game-time buffet, plus $5 Fireball specials, beer buckets and a bowling offer ($75 per person, four people minimum per lane) that includes all-you-can-eat wings and pulled-pork sliders.

Donny Osmond grew up onstage. He was just five, barely of school age, when he first performed on The Andy Williams Show. He hasn’t stopped since. “Fifty years in entertainment, or any career for that matter, is a milestone achievement,” Donny admits, attributing his longevity to reinventing himself and his music. “It’s something I learned back in the eighties, to adapt. Music is only limited to the technology that’s available, and a person’s creativity.” Donny will soon be releasing his 60th album, The Soundtrack of My Life. A free mobile app is cur rently available for download at Donny.com, which tells fans the stories behind his new record and gives them sneak previews of each track. “Each song holds a special memory for me. I share those stories, and some personal ones about Michael Jackson, Elton John and Frank Sinatra, to name a few,” he says of the bonus material on the mobile app.

Marie Osmond, who has been performing with her brother Donny at Flamingo Las Vegas since 2008, says she feels blessed to have had the opportunity to tour, record albums and appear on Broadway and on television for so long. “In this business, it’s important to challenge yourself,” she says. “Not just yourself, but also your audience. The root of our success is that we have some of the most amazing fans; performing in Las Vegas is convenient for them because they know we are going to be someplace consistent.”

A L OOK AT T ODAY’ S WAT C H TAST ES
STABLE TIMES BY ARIEL ADAMS Watch lovers can’t stop debating the effect that Apple will have on the timepiece industry when it debuts its upcoming Apple Watch—set for an early 2015 release. Unlike most wrist gadgets that preceded it, the Apple Watch is most certainly an item meant to capture the attention of traditional watch lovers in terms of both style and construction. While the Apple Watch may prove highly useful, it will never replace the value (both monetary and sentimental) of a traditional luxury timepiece. If smart watches nevertheless prove impossible to live without, will the Apple Watch dominate the luxury watch industry? Maybe not. If anything, Apple brings a new level of attention to the timepiece industry as a whole that has arguably been absent since people began to rely on their phones to tell time. The watch industry is about to experience an impressive surge in interest.
WATCH MAKER TIMEPIECE CONNOISSEUR
Las Vegas has always been a hot spot for timepieces. Independent watch retailers often claim that they are in the “celebration business,” for people looking to commemorate a special occasion. Las Vegas watch stores taken as a whole represent one of the most impressive selections of timepiece inventory in the world.
Due out in early 2015, the Apple Watch is designed to offer a wide range of functions beyond telling time.
Harry Lee, the assistant store director of the Las Vegas watch retailer Bellusso Jewelers explains that 90 percent of his customers are tourists, often from overseas, who flock to Las Vegas to admire rare or exotic timepieces.

Stores like Bellusso Jewelers, are known to cater to seasoned horological aficionados looking for highly ornate and complicated timepieces that can be priced into the several hundreds of thousands of dollars, from brands such as Breguet, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, Greubel Forsey and many more. Having said that, Lee estimates that most luxury watch buyers in Las Vegas will spend $10,000 to $100,000 per timepiece.
“For a man, other than a wedding band, his watch may be his entire jewelry wardrobe.” —Robert Penner, operator/owner of Roman Times and Hublot Boutique in The Forum Shops at Caesars As times change, so do tastes in watches and purchasing habits. With that said, the most popular mainstream luxury-watch brands remain consistent when it comes to sales in Las Vegas; companies such as Omega, Rolex, IWC and Breitling remain top sellers by volume. But how have their collections evolved over the last few years?
Vacheron Constantin’s Traditionnelle 14-day Tourbillon in 18-karat rose gold has an inhouse movement and bears the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva. The 42-mm watch features a tourbillon and power-reserve indicator, and will run for a full 14 days between windings ($292,700).

ABOUT TIME
IT’S ABOUT STYLE Watch buyers in Las Vegas—and perhaps across the world—are now more interested in lasting value and style compared to their habits five or ten years ago when experimentation and risk taking were more common. Lee suggests that masculine sport watches are still extremely popular, but size (diameter of a watch case) preferences have downscaled compared to those of just a few years ago. Even the classic dress watch is showing signs of returning popularity. In Las Vegas, expressions of wealth are becoming more understated. Boldly luxurious watches are waning in popularity as opposed to handsome watches that more quietly reflect one’s personal success and station in life. Watch tastes can actually be correlated to economic conditions; when markets are risk averse and conservative, so are the watches people wear.
