LETTER FROM THE
editor
Few moments are more satisfying for a woman than when someone compliments her style. Follow up praise with “Where’d you get that?” and you’ve just made her day. For me, these exchanges happen most often when I’m sporting something I picked up on vacation. I credit the story behind the item more than I do my tastes for the extra attention. You see, the inherent feeling of discovery that comes with shopping in a far-off place makes me wear these pieces more proudly. I hold my head a little higher when I’m wearing a pair of silver earrings I picked up at an artisan’s market near El Malecon in Havana. I’m quick to shake someone’s hand if it means showing off the Tahitian pearl ring my husband bought me on our honeymoon in French Polynesia. And I find every excuse to wear the lace-up sandals I scored wandering Barcelona’s trendy neighborhood of El Born, even if it means taking an extra pair of sensible shoes wherever I go. Some people buy postcards while others snap pictures. I prefer to bring home a tangible memory of my travels — a meaningful find that turns heads, because even strangers can tell there’s more to each item than meets the eye. This issue of Discover Style is packed with pieces that promise to elicit more than just double-takes from passersby — from exquisite fine jewelry to stylish Swiss watches. “Milestone Markers” serves as a guide for both timepiece enthusiasts and first-time buyers looking to add to their collection. “Set It Off” will come in handy for guys thinking of popping the question with a diamond (you’re welcome, ladies) while “Pop Rocks,” a look at colorful gemstones, informs the purchaser of the perfect “just because” jewelry. And if there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to keep pace in parts unknown, it’s America’s idol, Kelly Clarkson, who, as you’ll see, is all about moving “Onward & Upward.” We’d be remiss not to include beautiful resort collections; we can’t wait to shed our office wear to don them while on vacation in the sun-filled islands of the Caribbean. You’ll find our favorites highlighted in “Some Like It Haute.” Because who can resist a fun, colorful print at sea? Surely not us. As you set about exploring new ports, tasting the local fare and sampling the sweet rum, don’t forget to feast your eyes on the native offerings you’ll keep long after your vacation is over. The ones you can slip into, slide on and marvel at, no matter where you are. Happy sailing! Virginia Gil and the Discover Style team

STRAW BAG Pack your pool and beachside essentials in a straw tote that can double as an everyday handbag for any island adventure. The leather stripes give off nautical vibes while the dual handles tell the world you’re street savvy.
RETRO SHADES Inspired by the iconic sunglasses worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, these shades are the perfect mix of modern and retro. Or, cat-eye frames in dark tortoise shell will guarantee you’ll make a statement.
ESPADRILLES The classic espadrille is a sensible choice that will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Opt for an updated version — open-toed or embellished — for a warm-weather shoe you can dress up or pare down. 32

Versatile pieces to elevate your beachside look. By Katherine Lande Your swimsuit might be skimpy, but what you wear to cover up or complement your look should be anything but scant. Instead, go bold with accessories that take your sunworshipping style to new levels.
FRILLY HAT Fringe, a summer favorite both on and off the runways, is best approached with caution — or risk looking like you’re at a music festival. Give it a go as a subtle trim to keep the sun and fashion police at bay.
DAYTIME BLING There’s an arm party happening on deck, and this customizable bracelet — embellished with beads and charms — will get you invited. Intermingling jewelry made of mixed metals is an easy way to accessorize in the daytime.

CRAZYFOR COCONUTS WHY THE CARIBBEAN’S ‘IT’ FRUIT IS NOW THE REST OF THE WORLD’S DO-IT-ALL INGREDIENT. By Carissa Chesanek
With its laid-back vibe, the Caribbean doesn’t hold the same pacesetting quality of a metropolis. But there is one global trend you can trace back to the islands: the coconut. The coconut crop, referred to as “Tree of Life,” is extremely versatile, providing anything from pure drinking water (roughly 20 coconut palms can provide one person with a daily supply) to fuel and peat made from the tree’s husk. The humble fruit it produces has long been a key ingredient in many of the region’s signature dishes (to flavor delicious curries), been used as a healing aid (to reduce stress and boost energy) and functioned as a natural aphrodisiac (to increase blood flow). The US has grown fond of coconut oil for its ability to help dandruff, wrinkles, thyroid gland function and the immune system. Other coconut cure-alls? Post-workout hydration, which explains why the drink that is naturally low in calories and high in muscle-repairing potassium has replaced the ubiquitous coffee cup you see in celebrity tabloids. We’ve even seen vegetarians “cure” coconut flakes with maple syrup, liquid smoke and soy sauce to make a healthier, meatless alternative to bacon — and literally saving yours!
Design Essentials’ Natural Coconut & Monoi Deep Moisture Collection is infused with coconut oil to naturally hydrate hair.

THREE EASY FITNESS TIPS TO FOLLOW ON VACATION. By Virginia Gil

N
No matter how ambitious your fitness goals, being on vacation does a number on anyone’s motivation. To help you stay on track, we’ve tapped three of Miami’s top instructors to share their go-to moves when traveling.
Derek DeGrazio | The managing partner for Barry’s Bootcamp in South Florida — a treadmill and strength-training program with roots in New York and Los Angeles — got Britney Spears into shape for her 2011 Femme Fatale tour.
1
Enjoy yourself but don’t let yourself go. Indulge a bit, sweat a bit, repeat. And when all else fails? Squat, squat, squat!
Julie Jacko | The Barre Motion founder — a workout that combines yoga, Pilates and ballet movements to strengthen and slenderize muscles — has spent two decades in the health-and-wellness field.
You do not need hand weights or barbells to define and sculpt your upper body. Stick to the classic pushup, challenging yourself to perform 20 or more in perfect form, for a surefire way to get your body going.
2
Soeuraya Wilson | The model, actress and trained-dancer-turned-instructor helped launch Miami’s first SoulCycle — the indoor cycling studio with a huge celebrity following that promises 45 minutes of calorie-torching fun.

Morning yoga wakes up the body and mind. Use a towel as a mat and download an app to your phone to lead you through different flows and poses, including sequences to relieve pain and stress.

time TESTED ROLEX CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF THE PRESTIGIOUS DAY-DATE. By Nikki Novo
Prior to 1956, knowing the date and time wasn’t as simple as a flip of the wrist. It wasn’t until Rolex introduced its now-famous Oyster Perpetual DayDate that the calendar became so readily accessible. Unofficially known as the president watch for its notoriety among the world’s top leaders, the Day-Date was the first-ever wristwatch to display the date spelled out in full (available in 26 languages) in a window at the top of the dial. In 2016, the watch will have an important date of its own to celebrate: the 60th anniversary of the technology. To commemorate, Rolex unveiled an updated version of the legendary piece at Baselworld 2015 that features a larger case — upping the case size from 36mm to 40mm — and a new mechanical movement, Calibre 3255, which offers 70 hours of power reserve. Plus, new dials were introduced with laser-etched motifs and Roman-numeral hour markers over a sunray f inish. Impressive upgrades notwithstanding, what continues to wow is the Day-Date’s ability to perfectly synchronize the hours and the correct day of the week with every stroke of midnight. It’s what we call a mechanical marvel of the digital age.

ROCKS Glimpse the gemstones that have everyone swooning over colored stones. By Anna Voisard Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but gemstones also make excellent company. With options in practically every color of the rainbow, finding the perfect jewel to adorn your wrist, hand or décolletage is easy. But as is true of friends, you’ll need to get to know these stones before you find the right one — or two or three — to surround yourself with.

Hidden Treasures In the mid ’60s, shortly after it was found deep in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Tiffany and Co. declared tanzanite “the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2,000 years.” Said to be 1,000 times rarer than a diamond, tanzanite holds the honor of being the first gemstone added to the birthstone list by the American Gem Trade Association since its creation in 1912 by Jewelers of America.
A Tour of Tourmaline Tourmaline’s abundance (you’ll find it from Brazil to Madagascar) is only rivaled by the kaleidoscope of colors in which it’s found: shocking pink, neon blue, yellowish brown. Its name is derived from the Singhalese phrase tura mali, meaning “stone of mixed colors,” and according to folklore, it exists in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and collected all of its hues. It’s that sort of whimsy that makes tourmaline — said to inspire creativity — a favorite of artists and writers.
Red Light, Green Light Alexandrite magically beams green in sunlight and a seductive red under lamplight. Russian to its core, this dual-tone jewel named for Czar Alexander II was discovered on his birthday and deemed the national stone of czarist Russia. Alexandrite’s changeable nature renders it both a symbol of good luck and misfortune. Statement Squeeze Named after citron, the French word for lemon, citrine casts a hue that’s more golden than any citrus fruit. It shines as bright as a diamond at a fraction of the cost, making it a popular stone for statement pieces and cocktail rings. Referred to as the “success” or “merchant’s” stone by gem experts in certain circles, this yellow jewel is said to promote abundance and prosperity in all facets of life. Royal Rocks From adorning tiaras, scepters and all sorts of royal regalia to punctuating Elizabeth Taylor’s most-prized diamond pieces, rubies transcend time and trends. The red of a ruby varies — from rich and full with a slightly bluish hue to a darker, almost-brown shade to a bright raspberry. Placed under a pillow, the ruby is said to ward off nightmares. Sleeping with gemstones: what sweet dreams are made of. Green With History Steeped in cultural significance and global history, emeralds have been coveted for thousands of years. To the Incas and Aztecs of South America (still the center of emerald mining), this rare, green rock was considered a holy gemstone. To the Egyptians, emeralds symbolized rebirth and eternal youth, while in India, the stone is believed to bring good luck.

TIMEPIECES WITH BACKDROPS SO PRETTY YOU’LL FORGET THEY’RE MECHANICAL MARVELS.
By Anna Voisard Whimsy isn’t new turf for luxury watchmakers. But inspired timepieces that strike a balance between what’s haute and horological is a look that’s rapidly evolving. Be it delicate or festive, impressive complications camouflaged by prettified faces are what’s in. Like Sands Through the Hourglass Konstantin Chaykin’s Carpe Diem reminds us that time is precious — and often bigger than us. Its hourglass complication — with dots as 10-minute indicators — and planets that correspond to days of the week, give the impression of slow-passing minutes. A small dial of Roman numerals isn’t meant to be precise, rather to remind us that time is indeed fleeting. Color Theory Taking its influence from the avant-garde movement, Hublot’s Big Bang Pop Art challenges traditional design with a luxury watch that’s both complicated and whimsical. The dial and contrasting sub-dials on these brightly colored timepieces (sold in six shocking hues, each corresponding to a color depicted in Andy Warhol’s collection of self-portraits) resemble the artist’s famous silkscreen prints.
48
For the Birds The remarkable hand-painted enamel dial of Jaquet Droz’s The Bird Repeater Geneva — which depicts Lake Geneva in eight separate automations — rivals only the gold hand-carved finches that move and spread their wings as their chicks hatch in the watchmaker’s original The Bird Repeater. The grand complications are a flattering nod to the first automata that Pierre Jaquet-Droz and his son created in 18th-century Switzerland. Let’s Dance Dior’s VIII Grand Bal Plume, an ode to the designer’s obsession with lavish balls, features an oscillating weight adorned with a fan of delicately arranged feathers festooned by baguette-cut diamonds. More than just a pretty face, the pivoting rotor (one of numerous complications, which take up to 18 months to make) evokes the swirling movement of a ball gown.

When shopping for the perfect ring, think outside the box. As it turns out, the setting is just as important as the stone it holds in place. From raised to recessed, fancy-shaped centers are the unsung heroes behind the most stunning designs.
Prong
Channel
For the traditional type, there’s the prong setting, ranging from two to 20 tiny metal claws. The style, which can have a high or low profile, allows maximum light exposure from all angles, enabling a diamond to shine brightly. Considered the most classic setting, the prong has worked for both Lady Gaga’s and Kate Middleton’s engagement rings.
For those who prefer sparkle in a row, there’s the channel setting, in which stones of various shapes (think square, rectangular, round) are lined up and sandwiched between layers of gold or platinum. Celebrity fans, such as Alicia Keys, whose white-and-canary-diamond wedding band is a triple-channel stunner, remind us that this style is not about playing it safe.
Bezel
Flush
Ring stacking raised the profile of bezel settings, used to describe a gemstone surrounded by a thin, flat piece of metal. Commonly mistaken for a modern technique, bezel was the earliest method used to secure diamonds, in part because it protects the stone and hides any imperfections. Young Hollywood favors the retro look, including Kelly Osbourne who wears a modest bezel-set diamond ring gifted by her boyfriend.
Just as its name denotes, this design places the diamond level with the band so that only the crown is visible. Some jewelers call this a burnish setting, after the tool used to push the metal around the stone. Though an older technique, flush settings are popular with modern brides looking for a subtle alternative to high-profile engagement rings.

THEWATCHMEN
The stories, the rides and the style behind some of your favorite superheroes. By Carla Torres
BATMAN
SUPERMAN
The justice-seeking superhero’s secret identity is Bruce Wayne, who vows revenge on Gotham City’s criminals.
Philanthropist and industrialist by day, vigilante by night.
Born Kal-El, he’s rocketed to Earth by his scientist father just before his home planet is destroyed.
Killer combat skills, quick wit and incredible gadgets, courtesy of the tech guys at Wayne Enterprises.
Raised on a farm, the Man of Steel cultivates strong morals and love for Earth.
WOLVERINE
CAPTAIN AMERICA
Tony Stark, the brilliant benefactor of Stark Enterprises, invents the technology that transforms him into Iron Man.
James “Logan” Howlett is born with superhuman senses, captured and put in a program called Weapon X for mutants.
The all-American do-gooder’s alter ego is Steven Rogers, a frail man enhanced by the government to become a super soldier.
He’s got brains and brawn: Stark graduates with two master’s degrees by age 19.
Leader of the Avengers team and wearer of an indestructible shield.
Multilingual, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and trained in weaponry.
Superhuman strength, X-ray vision, telepathy, the ability to leap tall buildings — he’s got it all.
An armored chest plate keeps him alive despite the metal shrapnel lodged near his heart.
As if an adamantium skeleton and keen animal senses weren’t enough, he also regenerates.
Intelligent and agile, his body eliminates all fatigue-producing poisons, giving him endurance.
Batmobile. Batcycle. Batjet. Pretty much Bat everything.
Who needs wheels when you can fly across the solar system?
Iron Man uses technology (thrusters, jet packs, etc.) to take flight.
He’s a motorcycle kind of guy.
A weapon-wielding motorcycle kept inside a not-so-sexy battle van.
Movado
Orient
Citizen
TAG Heuer
Roamer
Batman doesn’t need a watch, but billionaire Bruce Wayne would sport nothing less than an all-black Movado to match his alter ego’s notorious dress code.
With the moon face right where he can see it, on his dial, the Orient is perfect for Superman when he ventures outside the stratosphere.
As someone who relies on technology to keep himself alive, Iron Man could really use Citizen’s Eco-Drive, which is light-powered, to tell time.
A man’s man, this anti-hero would only be seen in a classic TAG Heuer Classic 2000 — durable and understated but still edgy thanks to a black dial.
The durable Roamer Superior Moonphase — with thick sapphire crystal, stainless-steel casing and Swiss machinery — make it a natural fit for the super soldier.

GALL ANT globe -trotter Aquazzura’s world-traveling designer, Edgardo Osorio, talks shoes, tropical influences and must-have fashions for the islands. By Virginia Gil Sitting down to chat with Edgardo Osorio feels like catching up with an old friend. The Colombian-born, internationally bred designer behind luxury shoe label Aquazzura is well-dressed, charming and forthcoming about everything — from his work to his favorite vacation destination to his admitted inability to travel light. But there is one thing he refuses to divulge: the number of shoes in his closet. “You never count how many shoes you have — it’s bad luck! No one needs to know how old you are or how many shoes you have,” he says with a laugh.
How does your Caribbean background play into your designs? I’m a Latin man, and I love beautiful women. I love making a woman feel beautiful, and that’s always going to be what [inspires] me. There’s always a sensual element to all the shoes. Ultimately, I love for a woman to feel beautiful, sensual and seductive — even in flats. Who’s the designer you admire most? [The late] Oscar de la Renta, who said this amazing quote: ‘You should always walk like you have three men behind you.’ When I’m designing I think, ‘you should walk like there’s five men behind you — not three!’ You travel all over the world for work. Has it changed your approach to shoes? Travel is a huge influence. When I travel, I study women and the different cultures. I get to really see what women wear, what they need and what they don’t need. I’ll understand what works and doesn’t work in different parts of the world. 54
How do you target each region? Oddly enough, the world is an oyster now, so if a shoe is hot, it’s hot anywhere. Winter, summer — it doesn’t matter. Because of social media, women respond to fashion globally. But if you’re in Miami or the Caribbean, of course, you’re going to wear more bold colors. What’s in store for Aquazzura next year? [Growing the business] with handbags and menswear is something that we want to do. The Aquazzura woman needs an Aquazzura bag and she [probably] has an Aquazzura man. What’s the ‘It’ shoe for the tropics? Definitely espadrilles and wedges that are summery and strappy with lots of color, like resort wear. And now more than ever we’re seeing graphic elements with lots of color and stripes. And for travel? I love a beautiful pointy flat. Something you can add to your wardrobe and take with you anywhere. It’s elegant, so you can even wear it out to dinner!
You’re taking a trip — do you pack a carry-on or a suitcase? I’ve never traveled with a carry-on in my life! (Editor’s note: The designer ran late for our interview after being held up in customs for having too many pieces of luggage.)
From top: The designer in his studio inside the historical Palazzo Corsini; Osorio and Palermo promoting the pair’s Aquazzura x Olivia Palermo Collection; Reese Witherspoon sporting a pair of Aquazzura Babe booties; a design from Aquazzura’s spring/summer 2015 cruise collection.
So for the rest of us who may need to travel light, what sort of packing tips can you share? Bring shoes that are light, comfortable and that you can wear day to night — a transitional shoe that’s versatile. Make sure they don’t take up a lot of room so you’ll have space to [buy] more!
What’s the average number of shoes you pack for a trip? Never less than five but more like 10 [pairs]. I need options.
Most-loved Caribbean destination? I absolutely adore Mustique (in the West Indies) and St. Barts.
What do you like shopping for on vacation? Shoes! I make them but yes, it’s what I always go for. It’s a problem!
You never leave home without: My phone.

A résumé that includes stints with Salvatore Ferragamo and Roberto Cavalli, a creative partnership with Olivia Palermo and a bevy of celebrity fans — everyone from Kim Kardashian West to Mindy Kaling — is, in part, what keeps us from questioning his superstition. We caught up with Osorio in between transatlantic flights to and from his adopted city of Florence for his take on trends, travel and where you’re likely to find him next.

F RO M N AU T I C A L S T Y L E S T O BEACH-WORTHY LOOKS, SEVERAL WARM-WEATHER TRENDS GET THEIR 15 MINUTES OF FAME THANKS TO SOME BIG-NAME CELEBRITIES. By Ginger Harris When it comes to sailing in style, celebrities have set the standard for decades. Silver-screen starlets Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor showed us that subtle is sexy, aiming for form-fitting styles instead of today’s barely there bikinis. It was Taylor who gave the maillot its moment in the spotlight when she wore her signature white one-piece while crouching in the sand in Suddenly, Last Summer. Her midriff-covering suit illustrated the era of highlighting curves and waves instead of showing too much skin. Wearing it in white, like Taylor did, gives the look timeless style, as white and the water have always gone together like the sun and sea. 56
And speaking of one-pieces, it was Pamela Anderson who gave the color red its sea legs. Goldie Hawn may have launched the trend with the film Overboard, but it was Anderson’s Baywatch days that made the French-cut onepiece a must-wear for ocean activities. While Anderson outfitted hers with bare feet and a floatation device, Hawn’s was accessorized with diamonds, a high ponytail and mules. Even trendy, bikini-loving celebrities adhere to this look nowadays, as a sexy one-piece paired with accessories such as a wide-brimmed hat and a sarong are practically poolside staples for glamour girls. More-modern nautical looks can be seen all over St. Tropez, Cannes and other pieces of paradise. Think a tiny side-tie bikini with a white button-up atop as your cover-up. It’s a classic look worn by everyone from Kate Moss to Taylor Swift — even Leonardo DiCaprio. Audrey Hepburn, too, gave the classic button-up a chance to set sail. However, she opted to pair hers with chic summery shorts and a kerchief tied around her neck. Her gangway getups also included a striped tee and high-waisted shorts, often in navy blue for a real nautical feel, and a headscarf for when the wind’s seas began to whip. Turns out, being a seaward siren can be practical.
From top left: Elizabeth Taylor in her signature white one-piece swimsuit; Audrey Hepburn’s seaworthy button-up; Pamela Anderson in the iconic red suit while filming Baywatch.

HOW THE BARELY THERE SWIMWEAR STAPLE WITH A BOOMING PAST EVOLVED TO INCLUDE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. By Ginger Harris Before she wore an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini, she wore a little number created by French engineer Louis Réard. That was way back in 1946, and Réard, preempting the commotion, appropriately named the then-risqué swimsuit after the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. It was war, actually, that set the bikini craze into motion. Fabric rationing forced manufacturers to reduce the amount of material they used, which lead to smaller and smaller bathing suits. Eventually, the suits became so small that midriffs made an appearance. And while it caused some to be in an uproar over the amount of skin showing, it was a trend that caught on like wildfire. Bikinis and the beach were just meant to be. Since its inception, the bikini has seen a host of styles: the high-waisted, the tie-side, the thong — to name just a few. Here are some of its incarnations and which body types are best suited:
Top Gear The advent of the bullet bra — which introduced conical cups for bustier babes — did much to elevate swimwear design in the 1950s. As it turns out, the pointy shape is functional, too. For those who are heavier on top, an underwire top provides great support and lift, thus creating the illusion of a smaller waist and a full, perky bosom.
Ripe With Ruffles The ruffle was one of the first embellishments to wind up on the bikini, and back in the ’50s, it was practically a must for two-pieces to have a ruffle trim. This silhouette isn’t just for looks. It’s perfect for those who are smaller on top. The trim creates extra volume where you need it most, giving a more shapely effect.

Long and Lean If you’re looking for a way to elongate your torso, a low-rise bottom is a great way to gain length. These types of low-slung bikinis made an appearance back in the ’60s, when mod subculture popularized the trend. They show off hips and give the illusion of curves. Opting for one with a side that ties is a great way to create even more curves.

Tummy Tuck Low-slung bikinis have long been a favorite, but the original high-waisted look has seen a huge revival in recent years. The retro style is a great way to cover up problem areas and still feel sexy. Love handles and under-toned tummies play a great game of hide-and-seek with this fabulous and functional bikini bottom.

THOUGH THE BIKINI HAS BEEN AROUND FOR ALMOST 70 YEARS, ITS EVOLUTION IS ONE THAT FITS NEARLY EVERY BODY TYPE. JUST REMEMBER, WHICHEVER STYLE YOU WEAR, DO IT WITH CONFIDENCE AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF SUNSCREEN.
Legs for Days Just because you don’t have super-long legs doesn’t mean you can’t fake the look with a tie-side bikini. It made its first appearance on the beach back in the ’70s, as designers were getting creative with new ways to fasten the sides — think ties, rings, clips. Since then, this style has taken the beach by storm, and for good reason. It elongates, creates curves and prevents skin from folding over certain waistbands, giving women a shape they are proud to show off.

Rita Hayworth’s bombshell status had as much to do with the atom bomb that bared her image as it did with the ruched bikini she helped make famous in the ’40s. Ladies who happen to have a petite derriere should take a cue from the latter, as suits with a ruched bottom help create the illusion of a fuller behind — for a more pleasant type of “after shock.”

BIKINI 101 CUT-OUT? KEYHOLE? FIND OUT WHAT BIKINI BUZZWORDS REALLY MEAN. Bandeau A strapless bikini top that allows for optimal tanning with minimal tan lines.
Brazilian An almost-thong-like bikini bottom that provides the least amount of fabric of any bottom.
Thigh High If you’ve been blessed with curves that include your thighs, don’t swear off the bikini, just opt for one of its early shapes. Back in the 1940s and ’50s, bikini bottoms were skirted. Thankfully, today those skirts have become less form-fitting and more flirty and wearable. Rock this style like Marilyn Monroe would have in a pair of beach-friendly wedges, a little lipstick and a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. Right: Elizabeth and James Lafayette cat-eye sunglasses; Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting lipstick.

Cut-Out A one-piece suit with open sides that appear to be “cut out,” giving the impression of being a bikini.
Keyhole A round cutout in a swimsuit. Keyholes may be at the neck, between the breasts, on the stomach or the back.
Microkini An itsy-bitsy, teeniest-ofthe-weeniest bikini. It’s one coverage level away from being nude.
Scuba Bottom A bikini bottom with an attached belt.
Tankini A bikini with a tankstyle top. Often it has a “skirt” that covers the stomach area.
V-kini An extreme-scoop bottom with a V-shaped front.

GRAMMY-WINNING SINGER AND CITIZEN AMBASSADOR KELLY CLARKSON IS FOCUSED ON WHAT’S NEXT. By Melissa Cantor
When a televised singing competition called American Idol made its debut and invited the nation to pick its own pop star, the year was 2002. The iTunes Music Store did not yet exist, CD sales were only just beginning to slide, and the global music industry was generating some $10 billion more per year than it does today. It was not, in retrospect, a promising time to launch a recording career. But the changing landscape did not deter the woman who would be crowned the series’ first winner, a then-20-year-old Kelly Clarkson. With a voice that proved capable of cutting through an industry in turmoil, Clarkson has gone on to sell more than 25 million albums. “I don’t have just one [career milestone],” Clarkson says. “The fact that I’m still around and have longevity is what I find amazing. I like to celebrate that.” A great deal has changed for the singer on a personal level also. When she first auditioned for the show, her Los Angeles apartment had just burned down, and she had nothing to her name except a box of photographs. Today, the three-time Grammy winner — whose early hits included angst-ridden breakup anthems like “Since U Been Gone,” “Because of You” and “Stronger”— is worth an estimated $29 million, and she’s happily married to talent manager Brandon Blackstock. The couple welcomed daughter River Rose in June of 2014, and although Clarkson kicked off 2015 with the release of Piece by Piece — the final pop album she was required to produce under her American Idol contract — she’s said she hopes to get pregnant for the second time as soon as her promotional tour winds down. “It’s been fairly easy for me to work, be a mom and still get time for myself,” she says. “I am very lucky and have a supportive husband who helps a lot, a lovely nanny, and two stepkids that love to play with their little sister.” Now that she is no longer signed to a record label, Clarkson is also excited about branching out into other musical genres, with her first country album already in the works. “I have accomplished a lot of amazing things in my life so far, but I’m only 33 years old. I try and imagine all the things I have yet to accomplish, and I get inspired by that thought,” says the singer, whose other undertakings include being a brand ambassador for Citizen’s Better Starts Now campaign.
On her: Citizen Ceramic Diamond Chronograph watch.
Versus many luxury timepiece brands that focus on heritage, the watchmaker is a forward-looking company that prides itself on constant improvement. Their message resonates with Clarkson, who promises that her against-the-odds success story is far from over. “Tomorrow is a new day, and life should keep getting better,” she says.

WITH A CAREER THAT SPANS DECADES, JULIANNE MOORE STILL TAKES IT ONE ROLE AT A TIME. By MELISSA CANTOR

t may well be true that Hollywood does not create enough interesting female characters, particularly for the big screen. But it might also be the case that of the meaty film roles written for women in the last 20 years, a large number have been scooped up by Julianne Moore. From her star-making turn as a matriarchal adult film star in 1997’s Boogie Nights, to her dead-on portrayal of would-be VP Sarah Palin in the 2012 HBO film Game Change, Moore is known for giving layered, empathetic performances that defy stereotypes or one-dimensionality. She has played a junkie, a 1950s housewife who discovers her husband is gay, and a lesbian mother who becomes romantically entangled with her sperm donor. “Some people say, ‘You play happy people,’ and I’m like, ‘No.’ Or ‘You play people who have affairs,’ and I’m like, ‘No.’ Or ‘You play lesbians,’ and I’m like, ‘No,’” Moore recently remarked to Harper’s Bazaar. “I’ve made 50-something movies, so there’s a lot of different people!” This has been true of Moore literally since the beginning. After studying theater at Boston University, one of her first jobs as an actress was playing Frannie Hughes on As The World Turns in the mid-1980s. The character eventually spawned a second persona that was also played by Moore: the part of Frannie’s long-lost identical half-sister, Sabrina. “I was so excited when they wrote two parts for me, and then I realized it was super boring to act by myself!” Moore has laughingly said of the experience, though she made a good-natured return to the show for one of its final episodes in 2010.

There are not many actresses who are able to chart a course from a soap opera set to the Oscars stage, but Moore accomplished just that in early 2015, when she took home her first Academy Award for her starring role in Still Alice. In the movie, Moore gives a wrought, heart-wrenching performance as a 50-year-old linguistics professor struggling with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Though the role marked Moore’s fifth nomination for the prestigious golden statue, she had early indications that this time around she might actually win: Her husband, director Bart Freundlich, was moved to tears the first time he saw her performance. “We were sitting there, and I heard all of these noises. I said, ‘Are you crying?’ He is not a guy who cries, generally,” Moore said while promoting the movie. In a backstage press conference shortly after receiving her Academy Award, Moore elaborated on the story. “When we walked out of there, he said, ‘You’re going to win an Oscar.’ I couldn’t believe he said that,” she revealed. In addition to the Oscar, the performance also earned Moore a BAFTA Award (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and a Golden Globe. But she didn’t take a hiatus to carefully consider how to follow up the part. She is closing out her career-changing year by reprising her role as President Alma Coin in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, as well as appearing in the indie film Freeheld opposite Ellen Page. The latter project is quintessential Moore — she plays a gay police lieutenant with terminal cancer who is spending her final months fighting to secure pension benefits for her partner. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

THE BIG LEBOWSKI
BOOGIE NIGHTS
(1998) Though Moore’s comedic skills remained relatively undiscovered at this point in her career, her screwball-style take on Maude Lebowski is widely remembered among the cult followers of this Coen brothers flick.
(1997) Critics and avid fans will cite parts in earlier films (like 1993’s Short Cuts and 1995’s Safe) as breakthrough performances, but it was her screen time as veteran adult-film star Amber Waves that landed Moore her first Academy Award nomination and turned her into a household name.
THE END OF THE AFFAIR (1999) Defying conventional casting for a female romantic lead, Moore was 39 when she played the married woman who bewitches Ralph Fiennes (an actor two years her junior). Her beautifully restrained portrayal earned her Golden Globe and SAG nominations, and it put her in the running for an Oscar for the second time.
MAGNOLIA (1999) This critically acclaimed Tom Cruise vehicle reunited Moore with Boogie Nights director Paul Thomas Anderson, who wrote the part of drug-addled Linda Partridge specifically for her.

“My mother was a psychiatric social worker, and my father worked in the judicial system. The topic of conversation at dinnertime [was] what somebody did and why,” Moore once told The Guardian newspaper. “There was always a lot of discussion about behavior, and that’s what I’m drawn to — real stories and people.” Moore echoed that sentiment at The Museum of the Moving Image, which paid tribute to her at its 2015 Gala Salute. “What was it that led me here? A lot of it was luck, but most of it was my interest in story,” she said. Over the course of that evening, Moore was feted by fellow actors, including Ellen Barkin, Ethan Hawke, Steve Buscemi and Mark Ruffalo. It was noted by Barkin that
FAR FROM HEAVEN (2002) The 1950s housewife character grappling with her husband’s homosexuality was also written specifically for Moore by Safe collaborator Todd Haynes. Considered one of Moore’s best performances, the portrayal conferred a slew of awards and nominations upon the actress, including her third Oscar nod and the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival.
Moore is the only American actress who’s won awards at all three of Europe’s major film festivals (Berlin, Venice and Cannes). But it was the tribute from Freundlich — whom she met in 1996 while working on The Myth of Fingerprints — that suggests that a blissful domestic life may offer a counterpoint to all of that on-screen drama. “She said, ‘I like your script, man, but it’s too long, some things are going to need to be cut down, and if it’s my part, I’m not interested.’ To which I responded, ‘Will you marry me?’” Freundlich joked. Freundlich and Moore live in New York’s West Village with their teenage children, Caleb and Liv. Both teens play basketball, and the couple can often be found courtside cheering them on. The four have also
THE HOURS
GAME CHANGE
(2002) Moore’s turn as a bored housewife in The Hours, which was released the same year as Far From Heaven, turned her into the ninth actor to receive two Academy Award nominations in the same year.
(2012) Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was among the few who didn’t praise Moore’s portrayal of the vice-presidential aspirant, for which Moore won Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards, among numerous other accolades.
walked the red carpet as a family, which may be part of what keeps Moore so downto-earth. “I’m 54 years old. I can’t make my fingers walk — it’s humiliating!” she recently said on the subject of mani-cams. “I’ve been so privileged to have this career and be in so many moving, exciting, interesting narratives,” she said toward the end of her speech at the Gala Salute. “But it’s my own story, my own family story with Bart and Cal and Liv, that has given my life so much meaning.” Below, from left: Scenes from The Big Lebowski, Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Still Alice.
MAPS TO THE STARS (2014) Rachel Weisz was originally set to play aging movie star Havana Segrand in this satirical Hollywood drama. Scheduling conflicts prompted Moore to take over the part, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe and won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
STILL ALICE (2014) Moore’s tearjerking portrayal of a woman stricken with early-onset Alzheimer’s not only garnered the actress her first Academy Award, but also wins at the Golden Globes, SAG, BAFTA and Independent Spirit Awards.

MILESTONE markers Watches that keep track of more than just time. By Robin Diamond When it comes to accessories, women’s fashion reigns supreme. Bags, shoes, jewelry, the list goes on. And while men have fewer options with which to complement their wardrobe, their choice of timepiece does more than complete the look. Certain watches often carry sentimental value for guys: there’s the heirloom, the wedding gift, the I-just-landed-mydream-gig stunner. With commemorative pieces ranging from casual to dressy to sporty to vintage, a number of factors go into finding the right one. “Enthusiasts are inspired by inherited pocket watches, beautifully crafted wristwatch dials, a love of gears and all things mechanical, and even by the rich scientific and cultural history of timepieces,” says Michael Thompson, editor in chief of International Watch Magazine. Personal style weighs in too, as buyers find themselves motivated by aesthetic and functionality when growing their own collection. Not sure where to begin the journey of that coveted vestige? Let life’s milestones be your guide.
Pomp and Circumstance For many young men, graduation marks the start of a collection — be it as a gift from family or a present to themselves to commemorate their academic accomplishment. An entry-level piece from a renowned Swiss watchmaker such as TAG Heuer is the perfect starter watch. Well-known for its classic styles and reliable craftsmanship, a TAG will outlast trends and keep you on time, from your first interview to your first promotion. Saying “I Do” Not to be outshined by a brand-new wedding band, watches are the ultimate memento of a man’s wedding day. Whether purchased for oneself or gifted from a fiancée, a wedding
watch is one to remember, especially when it is a Rolex. Just like an engagement ring that’s customized to suit the bride, a Rolex can be personalized to reflect a groom’s taste. From band to bezel to face, you’ll find options that run the gamut in price and style. You’ve Arrived Whether winning a big case, landing a client, making partner or achieving CEO status, professional achievements have long been the impetus behind the purchase of a new timepiece. Consider Hublot as a wearable complement to the new corner office. With its oversized porthole design, striking combination of a minimalist black dial and natural rubber strap — the first from any watchmaker
— and its numerous celebrity editions, Hublot is as remarkable as your career success. Special Splurges Since time is of the essence and nothing in life is guaranteed, at least once in life — though hopefully more — you have to just go for it. Purchasing a watch “because you can” or as a memory from your vacation is a good idea more often than not. Enter Ernst Benz, designed and manufactured in the traditional Swiss manner, which has been worn by celebrities such as Carmelo Anthony, Anthony Bourdain and Jimmy Fallon and maintains the aesthetic traditions of the authentic aviation chronographs of the 1940s. In other words, worth every penny.

INNOVATIVE TIMEPIECES THAT GIVE EVEN THE MOST SKILLFUL PILOT A COMPETITIVE EDGE. By Haley Struthers Even with GPS and an instrument panel packed with sophisticated controls and indicators, the simple wristwatch is still one of the pilot’s most-relied-on devices. Sure, experience informs execution and maneuvering, but what sets a veteran apart from a novice is a skillful balance of know-how and “what now?” — all of which is easier when you’re wearing a trusty timepiece. Consider the Bremont Wright Flyer, especially if you’re an American-history buff. The watch, an ode to two of the greatest and earliest pilots there ever were, Orville and Wilbur Wright, showcases Bremont’s first ever proprietary movement, the BWC/01. It is produced in limited quantities and features a piece of wing cloth from the 1903 Wright Flyer, the brothers’ first successful foray into aviation, which means the wearer will literally have a piece of history with him at all times.

Watch-brand Zenith recognized another pioneer in aviation with the Pilot Type 20, a later evolution of the pilot watch created for Louis Blériot to wear on his journey over the English Channel in 1909 (a 37-minute flight incited by a dare from the Daily Mail). The timepiece helped set certain aviation standards: a crown built for gloved handling, a large dial, oversized Arabic numeral font and luminescent coating. Blériot’s watch, like many sold today, withstood fluctuations in temperature and atmospheric pressure as well as sudden jolts.
Clockwise from left: Zenith Pilot Type 20; Breitling Chronomat 44; Omega Speedmaster; IWC Big Pilot Top Gun.
Unlike the innovations introduced with the Type 20, some pilot-watch features don’t always stand the test of time. IWC’s Big Pilot Top Gun, which was designed with numerous military specifications in mind, is a staple for both the aviation-watch industry and the brand itself. Thanks to its pronounced crown, the Top Gun was perfect for pilots needing to wear thicker gloves while flying in unheated cockpits. Though today the innovation is more aesthetic than ergonomic, the crown remains one of its signatures. Ernst Benz’s Instrument series also is more about form than function, featuring a collection of watches whose dials are reminiscent of the cockpit gauges produced in the 1960s and ’70s. As aviation continues to evolve, the next frontier for watchmakers is outer space. Omega has found its way to the International Space Station with the Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph, a NASA-approved timepiece for all piloted space flights. Breitling, known for their precision-made chronometers useful to aviators, has made a fan in astronaut Mark Kelly. Over the course of six space shuttle missions, he’s worn various models, namely for their illuminated dials that offer quick readability in low light. “For a pilot, a watch is a really important thing to have — not just to hit targets, but taking off on time, landing on time, being on schedule,” says Kelly. Flight delays? Not on his watch.

Breitling Jet Team Leader Jacques “Speedy” Bothelin knows the synergy between aeronautics and watches quite well. He has clocked in more than 11,000 flight hours on 145 types of planes and performed around 2,800 demonstrations in 25 countries. Though Bothelin has mostly relied on a Breitling Chronomat 44 to keep the jet team’s formation, he’s been a fan of the brand since the 1970s, long before joining the team. “My first Breitling was a waterproof Navitimer,” says Bothelin of the 63-yearold Navitimer model, the world’s oldest mechanical chronograph still in production. But Bothelin still likes to try on others too. “I love discovering the new models and products. I encourage everyone to push open the door and explore what’s in the cases because it’s my favorite thing to do.” When he’s not flying, of course. 100 Discover Style

TEST OF TIME PRECISION IS EVERYTHING TO THESE FIVE BRANDS THAT TAKE THE ART OF TIMEKEEPING TO A NEW LEVEL. By Andrea Carneiro To most consumers, the luxury watch is a status symbol: a way to express their individual style, an accessory to complement their attire or, at its most basic, a way to tell time. But for some in the sports world, a timepiece means everything. Accurate timekeeping down to a millisecond can mean the difference between first and second place, or a gold or silver medal. In the spirit of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics (official timekeeper: Omega), here’s a look at five luxury watch brands raising the competitive stakes.

Longines Boasting the oldest registered logo of any watchmaker, this Swiss house has been producing watches since 1832. Its history with sporting events winds through baseball (think some of the early scoreboard clocks at Yankee and Shea stadiums, as well as Crosley Field), basketball (they were the “official timepiece of the Los Angeles Lakers” in the 1970s and ’80s) and the Kentucky Derby since 2011, when it was named the race’s official timekeeper. Today the company remains the official timekeeper of the French Open, an honor bestowed on them in 2007, and count tennis greats Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf as ambassadors of the brand. This year, in anticipation of the tournament, the brand unveiled a new chronograph that keeps time to one hundredth of a second: the Conquest 1/100th Roland Garros. Created as a tribute to the French Open, the watch was designed and engineered especially for high-precision timing and features touches of orange — paying homage to both Roland Garros’ iconic clay courts and the stadium’s logo. Tissot Acting as the official timekeeper for MotoGP, ice hockey, cycling, the FIE Fencing World Championships, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and others through the years, is a job that luxury Swiss brand Tissot takes seriously. Calling their timekeeping role a privilege and responsibility, Tissot prides itself on “absolute accuracy” in all efforts, including motorsports (where riders can be separated by just thousandths of a second) and fencers (milliseconds). In fact, ties to sports are so ingrained in the brand that parent company Swatch announced in April 2015 the naming of the complex in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland — home to the city’s two largest sports clubs. The brand also held the title of official timekeeper at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, presenting the best players with a specially engraved Tissot T-Touch Expert Solar watch.

Role x Arguably the most wellknown luxury watch brand in the world, Rolex has maintained close relationships with more than a few sports around the globe, including tennis, golf and sailing, as well as equestrian tournaments. Holding court as the official timekeeper of Wimbledon since 1978, Rolex features ambassadors such as Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki, but its ties to yachting are just as deep. A sponsor of some of the most pres-
tigious regattas in the world, Rolex is known for their Yacht-Master II, a unique regatta chronograph designed to give both experienced yachtsmen and sailing hobbyists a racing edge. The watch, which showcases a special countdown feature to sync with race times, was created especially for yacht racing with a face designed to be legible in all conditions, programmable memory and a winding crown that is resistant to water pressure at depths of up to 300 feet.
Omega Calling athletes the embodiment of the Olympic motto of “faster, higher, stronger,” Omega returns this year as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, measuring “the memorable fractions of seconds and millimeters of each race and every event.” Since 1932, the brand has worked closely with the famed event, taking credit that year for the first occasion that winners and medalists were timed to the nearest 1/10th of a second and supplying 30-caliber 1130 stopwatches, which were used in all the competitions. The innovation of those stopwatches? A split-second facility that meant intermediate times could also be measured. Omega’s timekeeping was once again put to the test in 2008, when Michael Phelps defeated Milorad Čavić by just a hundredth of a second. In honor of its 27th time as official timekeeper of the games, Omega launched the Seamaster Bullhead “Rio 2016” Limited Edition. The watch, modeled after the original 1969 Omega Seamaster, features subtle stitching in yellow, green, red and black along each side as a nod to the iconic Olympic rings. Fittingly, only 316 pieces will be produced.

Trinidad is known to craft-beer aficionados as a Caribbean suds mecca (Carib Brewery calls it home), while the Bahamas’ Kalik produces a strong pale lager, Kalik Gold, with more malt and a higher ABV than their regular version. Oh, and that old standby, Guinness, has a Caribbean-based brewery that makes the locally popular Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.

THE RUM LINE From satiating pirates to seducing travelers, the Caribbean’s ubiquitous spirit begs a second look. By Sara Liss Like gin-colored waters and powder-soft sand, rum is practically synonymous with the islands of the Caribbean. Whether it’s a caramel-colored batch served on the rocks at a beachside tiki shack or a shot of the clear stuff blended into a frozen drink garnished with a slice of pineapple, one can’t avoid the ubiquity of the cane spirit when traversing the islands. Each of the islands produces a spirit of a distinct character. Rum from Jamaica and Barbados is fuller-bodied than Puerto Rico’s, which, like Cuba’s, is light. And the range is truly dizzying, with over a hundred varieties vying for attention as interest in the intoxicating “grog” continues to grow and bartenders and mixologists experiment with concoctions that go beyond the typical mai tai or mojito. Rum came about in the 17th century after yeast was added to molasses residue from sugar production. It gets it trademark flavor and amber color via wood-barrel aging, and it can be affected by factors such as soil, climate, variety of cane and strain of yeast. It was made famous during the era of pirates and went on to fuel many a seaman’s misadventures at sea. Now the spirit has gained a bit of an upscale cachet with pricey bottles of eightyear-old Bacardi Millennium Edition going for upward of $700 (each one comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Ruben Rodriguez, the former president of Bacardi) and the even swankier Rhum Clement 1952, which can retail for as high as $1,000 and hails from the Habitation Clément distillery in Martinique. Here, we take a look at the “kill devil” spirit, as it used to be known, and the islands it calls home. So whether you enjoy that barrel-aged rum neat or mixed with fruit juice and served with a little umbrella, this guide will help you sip knowledgeably.

Jamaica: Appleton Estate, the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, is arguably the island’s most famous rum brand. The Appleton Estate Appleton Special Rum has a tart grapefruit aftertaste that’s perfect for Jamaican rum punches. The estate dates back to 1655 when the British captured Jamaica from the Spanish, and sources suggest that rum has been produced there continuously since 1749. Appleton Estate 12-Year Aged Rum’s aromas of caramel, vanilla, candied orange peel and sweet almond set it apart. Another noteworthy newcomer to the scene is Blackwell Rum, developed by music producer Chris Blackwell. He also owns the legendary GoldenEye Resort, formerly Ian Fleming’s private island residence. In 1952, Fleming wrote Casino Royale, the first book in the legendary James Bond series. He penned 14 Bond books — all written on-site.

Martinique: This French-Caribbean island produces only Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) rums. This refers to the high standards by which the French government monitors the products coming out of the island’s distilleries. Martinique is famous for its rhums agricoles, which are distilled from pure sugarcane juice (rather than molasses) and have a vegetal quality. Aficionados call it the purest expression of rum, and its most common iteration for locals is in a “Ti’ Punch” made with rhum agricole, cane syrup and a lime wedge. One to look for is the Clément V.S.O.P. Rhum Agricole Vieux that boasts smokiness and spice to offset the elixir’s grassy notes. Dominican Republic: The 125-year-old label Brugal proves that all rums are not sweet. Sip the flagship Brugal 1888, which is double-barrel aged first in oak then sherry, and linger over the smooth palate of candied orange peel and dried sultana raisins. Unlike the lighter, subtle-tasting standard Brugal, 1888 is darker and more flavorful — without feeling syrupy. In the mood for something spicier? Pour Ron Atlantico Private Cask over ice. Another of the country’s popular rums, refined and characterized by a deep amber hue, it is perfect for sipping.

Barbados: Mount Gay has been producing rum since 1703. The brand maintains a strong connection to the sailing world, sponsoring regatta events around the world and with the US Sailing Association. And the storied rum is one of the key ingredients in Stirling Punch, a drink named for famous yachtsman, America’s Cup winner and Vanderbilt Sailing Club founder Harold Stirling Vanderbilt. Mount Gay Rum Extra Old, a blend of rums aged 8 to 15 years, features a balanced blend of aromas that include vanilla and ripe bananas. The Eclipse, inspired by a 1910 total solar eclipse, combines single and double-distilled rums matured in Kentucky oak barrels, which give it its subtle smokiness. Puerto Rico: It’s reported that anywhere from 70 to 80 percent of the world’s rum hails from Puerto Rico, where the best-selling rum is Don Q. Other brands that call this island home include spirit-giants Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Reserva Añeja. For a slightly more upscale quaff, go for one of the four aged sipping rums from Bacardi’s Facundo Rum Collection, a tribute to Bacardi founder Don Facundo Bacardi Masso. The Exquisito is aged in oak barrels and then transferred and stored in sherry casks to rest for a minimum of one month, giving it a fruity finish that balances its smoky and spicy notes.

SCULPT &
GLOW There’s a common misconception that contouring, a celebrity-approved makeup technique that adds definition and structure to your face, needs to be over the top. “I always say contouring and highlighting should be worn like an undergarment,” says Sephora PRO Lead Makeup Artist Ilde Goncalves. “You’re wearing it, but nobody should be able to see it.” The trick to accentuating

lips and heightening cheekbones then lies in proper application. “Contouring for the day needs to be soft and very well-blended,” says Goncalves, who’s beautified models backstage at New York Fashion Week. To help you master the look, he’s provided a step-by-step guide to try before you hit the deck. Because, after all, aren’t vacations meant for trying new things?
STEP 5
STEP 1
Use your fingertips to gently massage moisturizer into your skin. Hydrating before applying foundation ensures that it will look even, flawless and last longer.
STEP 2
Apply foundation in sheer layers using a moistened sponge (like Beautyblender) or a foundation brush. Wetting the sponge will give your skin added hydration to create a natural-looking glow.
STEP 3
Now that you’ve applied your foundation, it will be easier to see where you really need to spot conceal. Apply concealer to under-eye circles, blemishes and areas with discoloration.
STEP 4
It’s important to identify your face shape before highlighting and contouring. Here’s a rough guide to help you find yours: • OVAL: generally balanced shape; length is greater than the width. • ROUND: width is equal to the length; rounder hairline; fuller cheeks. • SQUARE: strong jawline that is boxed off at the chin; straighter hairline; cheeks appear fairly flat. • HEART: slightly wider forehead that gradually narrows toward the bottom of the face; tapered chin.
Now, highlight the areas where light naturally hits your face. Apply your highlighter color (a lighter shade) to the center of your forehead, down the bridge of your nose and under your eyes, going from the high point of your cheeks to your temples. To make your lips appear fuller, illuminate your cupid’s bow (the curves of your upper lip) and chin.
STEP 6
Next, use a darker shade to contour and define the features of your face. If your face is round or square, you’ll want to define your cheekbones and jawline. Using an angled brush, start from where your ear and cheek meet, then sweep the product into the hollows of your cheeks, stopping just before you reach the apple of your cheek. If your face is oval or heart-shaped, you’ll want to contour the sides of the forehead and hairline. You can also contour the sides of your nose, under the jawline and the sides of your neck to create or emphasize a defined bone structure.
STEP 7
Now, blend, blend, blend! Using short strokes, blend your contours upward with a fluffy brush so that the color meshes seamlessly with your foundation and highlights to diffuse harsh lines. That’s the key to an airbrushed-looking finish.
STEP 8
Finally, set your contour. Lightly pat on a loose setting powder to control oil and ensure your makeup lasts all day.

pontaneity is easier said than accomplished. When you can’t walk away from your calendar and your schedule is seemingly packed until next season, a single accessory gives you the freedom to be impulsive: Selleria by Fendi Timepieces. Adhering to changes in attitude (and latitudes), this Swiss-made watch gives you the option of interchangeable straps available in colors and finishes as varied as handstitched alligator leather in soft pink and caramel-colored Fendi Cuoio Romano calfskin leather. The durable caseback accommodates your changing looks, as a simple twist of the piece is all it takes to switch your choice of strap, while a yellow gold-plated bezel or one that’s been festooned with 60 glistening diamonds adds a timeless touch. Other Fendi Timepieces watch signatures include a sapphire crystal glass and a white mother-of-pearl cabochon atop the crown. Like for your watch to showcase more than just the time? Each Selleria by Fendi Timepieces has a unique mother-ofpearl dial with a geometric design inspired by a Karl Lagerfeld sketch from the ’70s and “top-stitched” Roman numerals, a nod to the Fendi brand’s storied heritage.
