Baroque Roman architecture is what defined Caesars Palace upon its opening in 1966. Ornate columns, replica Roman statues and a fountain so grand, founder Jay Sarno once boldly asserted that it put the Trevi Fountain in Rome to shame. Sarno wanted to make a statement, so he built an elegant entrance designed to entice visitors inside. The fountains, of course, have become legendary, an iconic feature. They’ve been jumped by daredevils and were pictured in all the major boxing matches held at Caesars Palace during the 1980s.

Fashion photographer Robert JohnKley used a keen eye to capture his remarkable shots. In our opening photo, Robert perfectly positioned the model in front of the Winged Victory of Samothrace statue so as to give her the appearance of having wings. Then he captured the fading daylight near a rotunda and statue of a trumpeter angel. “I noticed the sun going down behind the building and knew we only had minutes to get the shot. It worked out perfectly: a little luck combined with the beauty of nature.”

When we told stylist Christie Moeller we’d be photographing outside Caesars Palace, her immediate reaction was that the resort’s iconic architecture called for gorgeous, flowing gowns. “We wanted the look to appear effortless, yet chic. Soft tousled hair, glowing skin and dresses sent straight from the heavens.” Her favorite: “The drool-worthy Longchamp dress photographed at the replica of the Trevi Fountain in front of the Forum Shops. The image is absolutely stunning.”

Between them, they’ll soon have 10 restaurants in Las Vegas. For Wolfgang Puck, it started in 1992 when he invaded what was then a buffet town and brought Spago to The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, paving the way for a generation of chefs to follow. Gordon Ramsay arrived in 2012, opening three restaurants in less than a year. He’ll add a fourth, Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips, at The LINQ Promenade this fall. We caught up with the two chefs at the 10th anniversary of Vegas Uncork’d by Bon Appétit.

ON VEGAS UNCORK’D Ramsay: “There is not an event on my radar that has this type of talent. Nothing compares to Uncork’d.” Puck: “It’s great exposure for Las Vegas. As chefs, we are competitors—but we are friends first. It’s nice to be in one place and see each other.”

STATE OF DINING AT CAESARS PALACE Ramsay: “It’s pretty diverse. You will never get bored, that’s for sure.” Puck: “Caesars Palace has a great assortment of restaurants. You could spend two weeks in Las Vegas and eat in a great restaurant every night.”

CAESARS PALACE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY Ramsay: “It’s a big one. Ironically, [Caesars] is sharing a birthday with somebody else this year—a chef who happens to reside out of Scotland. He has fifteen Michelin stars, thirty-two restaurants and a few lighthearted TV documentaries. What an iconic year.” Puck: “Today, it seems like Las Vegas’ main attraction is restaurants, and Caesars Palace has some of the best on the Strip.”

WHAT’S NEXT? Ramsay: “Fish & Chips will bring nostalgia to Vegas. It’s not a greasy spoon. It’s pretty sophisticated.” Puck: “Nothing in the works for Las Vegas, but we never say never. We’re opening [new restaurants] in Shanghai, New York City and Doha this year, so three places. That’s enough.”

To hear Jay Sarno tell it, he wasn’t very fond of Las Vegas when he made his first trip here in February 1963. He thought it lacked originality. There was no real ‘wow’ factor to attract the rich and famous to the middle of the desert. But Sarno saw the “lack of firstclass accommodations as an invitation to do better,” says David Schwartz in his book Grandissimo: The First Emperor of Las Vegas. So Sarno built it. “In 1963, he came to Las Vegas and absolutely hated it,” Schwartz reveals in a recent interview. “He thought it was terrible. It was hokey and bland. That’s how he got the idea for Caesars Palace.”

At the time of his visit, Sarno owned cabana hotels in Atlanta, Dallas and Palo Alto, California. Sarno saw the Strip as an opportunity. He was convinced he could inject life into Las Vegas, but he wanted to build a place that guys could escape to and live out their fantasies. And it had to be majestic and grand. America, at the time, was captivated by everything Greco-Roman. Ben Hur and Cleopatra were

huge successes at the box office and the comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was a hit on Broadway. A Roman-themed hotel with columns and statuary seemed ideal. “This was the first time that a resort in Las Vegas took the idea that the guest was to be the center of attention,” Schwartz explains. “That meant Goddesses peeling grapes and feeding you. [Sarno] was egotistical in the belief that this was the way people wanted to be treated,” he continues. “And people did. This was the beginning of ‘What Happens Here, Stays Here.’ The thought of coming to Las Vegas to get away from reality.” At the time, Caesars Palace was the most expensive casino ever built. It opened on August 5, 1966. Of the $25 million spent building the resort, $1 million was spent on the three-day grand opening party. A blond Cleopatra welcomed each of the 1,800 guests arriving at the 14-story, 680-room hotel. And so it began…

One of the biggest draws in the early days of Las Vegas was FRANK SINATRA. When Sinatra sang the big players rolled into town to see him and test the tables. So Sarno naturally snagged him from the Sands and Ol’ Blue Eyes was soon sipping Jack Daniel’s whiskey onstage at Caesars Palace. Sinatra performed in the Circus Maximus showroom from 1968 to 1983—celebrating his 40th anniversary in show business with a televised event filmed at the resort in 1979. Sinatra was even named Caesars Palace’s Vice President of Entertainment in 1981. A lot has happened at the legendary resort over the last half century. Here’s a look back at some of the best of the past 50 years.

first song at the grand opening party on August 5, 1966 was an a capella rendition of “Danny Boy.” The evening’s performance in the Circus Maximus Showroom also included Williams in a stage production of “Rome Swings” with Phil Richards playing Caesar.

a desert oasis. The Olympic-size swimming pool copied the design of Rome’s Pompeii baths. More than 8,000 pieces of marble quarried from Carrara, Italy, was used to line the pool.

launched his first string of shows on August 25, 1966, just 20 days after the resort opened. Another regular at Caesars Palace was JACK BENNY, who played to his first full house on October 27, 1966.

In a near-fatal stunt,

failed in his attempt to jump the Caesars Palace fountain on New Year’s Eve in 1967. On April 14, 1989, ROBBIE KNIEVEL did what his father couldn’t and successfully made the jump.

While still a standup comic (before quitting to devote his attention to filmmaking),

performed here on February 12-25, 1970. Heavyweight boxing champion JOE LOUIS was a hotel greeter at Caesars Palace in the 1970s.

Sequin-suited pianist LIBERACE played the resort in the 1970s and ’80s. He played his final Las Vegas shows in 1986 during a twoweek engagement at Caesars Palace.

A room revival is under way. Caesars Entertainment has embarked on an ambitious plan to remodel more than 5,700 rooms from coast to coast. This includes upgrades to 4,800 hotel rooms at four of its Las Vegas resorts. By year’s end, the company will have renovated more than 10,000 hotel rooms since 2013. “We are re-investing in our room product to ensure that our guests’ in-room experience perfectly aligns with the extraordinary entertainment offerings we have developed and upgraded in recent years,” says Mark P. Sometimes, it’s simply referred to as the “THE HOUSE THAT CELINE BUILT.” And rightfully so. The Colosseum at Caesars Palace opened in 2003 with Celine Dion as its first resident performer. Thirteen years, and soon-to-be 1,000 shows later, she’s still packing the house, as fans from across the globe come to see her perform in the 4,298-seat theater that was originally constructed for her show, A New Day…. Caesars Palace is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. You’ve been there since 2003. What’s it like performing there after all these years? I remember vividly arriving in this beautiful new theater in 2003. It was a rich and wonderful experience indeed. And definitely A New Day… for me! What’s it like being part of the Caesars family? Caesars is truly part of my professional family. And, as it goes with family relations, it’s dear to my heart. You’re approaching your 1,000th performance at The Colosseum. How does that feel? I never thought we would reach this milestone. I truly enjoy being onstage. For me, performing is about having a good time with my fans, the musicians and crew. Do you remember your first performance at The Colosseum? Prior to that, did you perform at Circus Maximus? Yes, I performed at Circus Maximus back in 1996. It turned out to be a good omen and the beginning of a wonderful experience.

I’m very honored and proud to be a part of this community. To have the privilege to do WHAT I LOVE MOST IN AN IDEAL ENVIRONMENT, SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE ME ENOUGH TO TRAVEL HERE, THRUSTING THEIR AFFECTION AND SUPPORT, SHOW AFTER SHOW. So many entertainers have followed your lead. Cher, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Shania Twain, Britney Spears and others. Why do you think stars are attracted to today’s Las Vegas? Las Vegas has become the entertainment capital of the world. It is quite normal that artists wish to come here to perform. Do you have any superstitions preparing for a show? We had Rene’s hand [cast] in bronze many years ago. And today, it has become a tradition to touch it before going onstage. You gave a very emotional performance when you returned to the stage on February 23. Was it difficult? What was going through your mind? It was a very emotional night. I had to sing for the first time without [Rene’s] presence—my mentor, my love. But I knew he was watching over me. How many more years do you see yourself performing? I never think about that. I hope to sing as long as I breathe. I have been singing all my life, since childhood, and I don’t see myself retiring or not performing. It’s what I love to do. You often joke about singing “My Heart Will Go On.” What are your feelings toward the song today? It’s a classic and people want to hear it. I was very fortunate to have James Horner and Will Jennings give me the opportunity to sing their masterpiece. The twins are turning six this year. Do you feel they’re growing up fast? Yes! I believe that all parents think the same. And Rene-Charles is 15. Are you ready for the teenage years? Is any parent ready for that? Really? But Rene-Charles is a very good son. So like all parents, I always hope for the best. But let’s say, we’re off to a very good start!

The Roman-themed, upscale retail complex wowed shoppers right from the beginning. Its distinctive interior design featured a fantasy re-creation of an ancient Roman streetscape with classical columns and arches, as well as central piazzas with ornate fountains and statuary. Shoppers found elegance, opulence, beauty and exclusivity throughout the original 70 luxurious stores. Today, The Forum Shops contains elaborate ceiling murals and an architectural wonder—a three-level spiral escalator—among its 160 retailers. This shopping wonder is one of the world’s top performing retail centers, comparable to famous shopping streets such as Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris and Via Condotti in Rome.

To celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Caesars Palace, we gathered some Forum Shops exclusives that celebrate Las Vegas.

Time Honored “High Roller” The Las Vegas Edition Hublot Aerofusion Watch ($22,000) is a one-of-a-kind timepiece made of micro-blasted black ceramic and 18-karat rose gold with a skeleton dial. More than just the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali was a cultural icon and humanitarian. Ali took to the ring seven times in Las Vegas, including his second-to-last fight at Caesars Palace on October 2, 1980—losing to Larry Holmes. Ali was the ultimate Las Vegas showman: In 1973, he wore a bejeweled robe given to him by Elvis Presley into the ring for his fight against Joe Bugner. Said Bob Arum, who promoted 27 Ali fights, “Muhammad Ali transformed this country and impacted the world with his spirit. His legacy will be part of our history for all time.”
