Sk i n l a c i t a b b a S Discover an abundance of allnatural products designed to treat your pores to a tropical vacation. B y M e l i s s a C a n to r Time-released facial peels. At-home micro-current treatments. Sometimes your skin needs a break from technology, too. If you’re looking to hit the refresh button on your beauty routine, there’s no better (or more relaxing!) regimen than one rooted in tropical, plant-based ingredients. Your complexion will reward the shift to gentler, natural products — and you might be surprised to discover that Mother Nature is a darn good chemist.

3. Harnessing the skinprotecting powers of the Kukui nut — locals’ go-to moisturizer for centuries in Hawaii — Flynn & King’s Replenish Body Oil ($55, flynnandking. com) packs skin with antioxidants and provides deep moisture without clogging pores. Its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe redness, so it’s also smart to lather on this oil after any extra-long sunbathing sessions.

1. Sugar and mint can be used to make more than just mojitos. This time-tested c o m b o a l s o c r e at e d t h e s k i n - l ov i n g Ref re s h M i nt B o d y S cr u b by O rg a n i c Bath Co. ($27, organicbath.co). Fair-trade sugar sloughs away dirt and dead skin, while an organic blend of invigorating mint oils seep into pores for a hydrating, silky finish. 2. Pineapple and papaya enz ymes do the heavy lifting in Herbivore Botanicals’ Brighten Mask ($48, herbivorebotanicals. com). These fruit enzymes — which are gentler versions of synthetic alpha hydroxy acids — exfoliate and resurface skin, giving your face a warm, vibrant glow.

4. With a base of virgin organic coconut oil and shea butter, Positive Seeds Lip Balm by Soul Sunday ($16, soul-sunday.com) is deeply moisturizing. Apply it to lips or dry skin for lasting softness and breathe in the delightful golden pear scent, which is achieved via a light blend of essential oils.

Anything Karl Lagerfeld introduces to the fashion world is bound to become a hit. So when the trendsetting Fendi designer (he’s also the creative director for Chanel and his eponymous label) debuted Bag Bugs — fuzzy, monster-inspired handbag charms complete with glistening crystals for eyes — people ever y where quickly star ted clipping these whimsical addons to their hobos, clutches and ever y style of purse in-between. For months these expressive and expensive creatures were sold out, but for tunately the trend has finally trickled down to more a p p ro a ch a b l e l a b e l s s i n ce l a u n ch i n g nearly two years ago. These days you’ll find all sorts of options, including more plush styles like the Bugs, which handbag connoisseurs prefer since the soft fabric won’t scratch the exterior when clipped to the handle. Not quite as permanent as monogramming, which also had its heyday, handbag charms give wearers the freedom to update the look of a popular bag or make it their own. The other upside? “If you get sick of the look or want to resell the bag, all you have to do is unclip your charm,” adds the PurseBlog, the Internet’s largest source of news and information on designer handbags and accessories. They’ve become a way to show off yet another a spec t of your per sonal st yle, giving new meaning to the phrase “arm candy.” —Virginia Gil

No shirt, no service? No problem! Here’s what to wear.

The Kimono

By Ginger Harris When it comes to taking a trip in the sun, bikinis, maillots and tankinis are a must. But after spending your days under the rays, you may need something to change into to accommodate destination dress codes. For locations that carry a “no shirt, no service” policy, tr y packing easily transitional pieces like sarongs, button-ups, kimonos and rompers into your suitcase. Each offers an easy way to camouflage your swimsuit, so you can stay in vacation mode and head back into the sun after your excursion. We’ve included several looks to inspire your all-day style.

If you want to stay in your suit but need to slip something over your shoulders to accommodate a dress code, a kimono is a fast and easy solution. Stylish and in line with the boho trend, these chic cover-ups are as easy to pack as they are to put on. Shop Miami Style makes a perfect piece.

The Romper An all-in-one option is ideal for going from day-in-the-sun to dress-code appropriate. Consider a romper for a Superman-to-Clark-Kent change to conceal your swimsuit. Get the look with this one from Lulu’s.

36

When done right, the youthful embellishments can be elegant without ever looking childlike — like Italian shoe brand Aquazzura’s supremely elegant stilettos with frilly suede accents that draw the eyes right to your freshly pedicured toes. If the monochromatic style feels boring, you can opt for pom-poms in a kaleidoscope of hues on your feet. If cruising to Cartagena, browse the artisan markets for a sunny pair of Wayuu sandals handm a d e by t h e e p o ny m o u s C o l o m b i a n tribe. Still not ready to fully embrace the pom-pom? Key rings and purse charms are a great way to test the waters and add a bit of tex ture and dimension to your accessories. California-based brand K AYU offers several accessorized totes that are handcrafted in Asia using traditional indigenous craft techniques from the local area. When styling these bouncy pieces, it’s important to keep the rest of your outfit fairly simple. There’s a fine line between o r na m e nt a l a n d o r na m e nt s , a n d yo u wouldn’t want to spend your vacation looking like a walking Christma s tree. — Virginia Gil

The Sarong A fun and colorful sarong is an essential for every getaway simply because of its diversity. Skirt, shirt, dress, scarf, headpiece — find all that and more in this one staple. To transition from bathing suit skirt to cool cover-up, simply cross one end of the sarong over the other and tie behind your neck and you’re ready to make the move from sun to your next round of fun. A great option is this Echo Ombré Tassel Pareo available at Macy’s.

Not all pom-poms need a shake to show off some good cheer. The kind the fashion industry is abuzz about these days succeeds in brightening up any ensemble without even a shimmy. Be it as a subtle trim or a cluster of color ful spheres in all shapes and sizes, the playful trend is the simplest way to add some spice to a garment or a plain Jane look.

The Button-Up A classic white button-up is a great way to get things covered in a flash. Opt for one that’s a bit oversized so it doubles as a dress. Roll up the sleeves, leave unbuttoned and simply toss on to work your way around the rules. Try this long cotton button-up available at H&M.

Traveling with st yle doesn’t require an oversized suitcase. All you need is a savvy take on accessories. From a simple scarf tied around your neck to a pair of vacationworthy espadrilles, these wardrobe addons are sure to spruce up your look both off and on deck.

2. Make a fashion statement on shore days by opting for a bag that carries the essentials, yet also demonstrates your readiness for adventure. Men can forgo the boring black backpack for a tropical or pastel-colored one, like Herschel’s Tropical Flora. For ladies, there’s the roomy Kayu tote, which becomes personalized with added flair like a pom key chain or scarf attached to its handles. 3. Never underestimate the power of a small piece of fabric. Throw on a neckerchief like this one from Asos or add a gingham pocket square to your linen blazer for a simple and sophisticated look. 4. For a more fashionable approach to the basic thong sandal, consider a fresh pair of Soludos espadrilles that can keep you going from morning to night — at whichever pace you wish.

1. When on vacation, the only thing that goes bare should be your calendar, never your wrists. Keep them covered with a wraparound bracelet, which pairs as perfectly with a luxury watch as it does with a forearm full of gems. And to ensure you’re truly stressfree, make sure the material used is water resistant, like these Miansai pieces made of maritime rope.

Kate Hudson makes attaining a healthy lifestyle fun and free-spirited with her fitness line, Fabletics.

You work out to look good, but now, tha nk s to K ate Hudson and her line, Fabletics, you can look good while you sweat. Back in 2013, Hudson co-founded a line of fashion-forward fitness styles that go beyond the gym and into real life; the line also includes perfect laid-back travel essentials. Fabletics includes pieces with cool cutouts, graphic prints and bold colors in sets. What makes it most attractive, however, is the price point and versatility.

bringing gym-spiration to your door every 30 days. It’s a concept that has taken off, and today, Hudson is launching stores across the U.S., 13 total, taking the brand from online to in-person for millions of women and men who want to blur the lines between fashion and fitness. While Fabletics was initially created for women, it’s recently expanded to include FL2, a new line of men’s high-performance athletic gear and premium lifestyle basics. Because, hey, guys like getting in shape in style, too. With her new status as fitness fashion icon, Hudson has been f ielding advice requests, especially from young moms looking to do it all. Personally, she finds her zen in meditation and Pilates. Yet, she believes 40

in not pushing yourself and, instead, doing what feels right for you as an individual on any given day. Fabletics carries the same spirit. For Hudson, Fabletics isn’t just a brand, it’s a part of her own routine and lifestyle, as the actress is an ambassador for her own line, donning the line in her daily workouts.

Fabletics partnered with the Council for Fashion Designers of America for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer to create a three-piece line with a tank, sports bra and capri. The line launched for National Women’s Health and Fitness Day and will dovetail into Breast Cancer Awareness Month to benefit the charity. “I believe being given the opportunity to lend your voice and creativity to empower, support and spread awareness is a beautiful thing,” Hudson says. Alexis Isaias, the world-traveling designer behind eponymous fashion label ALEXIS, always dresses the part wherever she goes. B y V i rgi nia G i l What does a stylish Miami girl look like? On a good day, a lot like Alexis Isaias, whose eponymous label, ALEXIS, distills t h e dres s co de of a f a shion-for wa rd woman living in a tropical metropolis. The breezy silhouettes, colorful fabrics and one-piece getups you’ll regularly spot the 30-something Miamian sporting both at home and while traveling the globe are the sartorial pillars on which she est ablished the brand more than seven years ago. “[My mother and I] designed a capsule collection to wear during our summer in the Mediterranean and got so many compliments,” she says of the impetus behind ALEXIS, which began out of their home office with just a few pieces and is now sold in high-end stores around the U.S. Fortunately for fans of the brand, which include model Adriana Lima, Isaias’ globe-trotting lifestyle shows no signs of slowing, and neither does the future of ALEXIS.

Describe the ALEXIS woman. She is effortlessly chic. She is a modern woman who wants to remain elegant and sophisticated. Why do you think your designs are so popular in places like Miami and the Caribbean? I believe it is the fabrics, textures and colors that make our clothes so appropriate for a tropical lifestyle. What inspires you? My inspirations are endless. Women inspire me. Vintage fashion icons, vintage shopping and photography are always great sources of inspiration as well. What has the greatest influence on what you design? My travels are always an integral influence on my collections. They usually are the beginning of my mood boards and inspire my color palette for a particular season. Do you follow the work of other designers? Studying the evolution of Karl Lagerfeld and Valentino’s designs is always influential to designers in the women’s contemporary market.

In recent years, the Turkish city of Gaziantep has been better known for its proximity to a Middle Eastern conflict zone (it’s less than an hour’s drive to Syria) than for its population of skilled cobblers. But the bustling border town is where Mickey Ashmore’s small team of shoemakers toils away on Sabah, the former New York investment banker’s modernized take on traditional Turkish slippers. Available in a spectrum of colors, each Sabah shoe is crafted entirely by hand using high-quality hides and water-buf falo-leather soles — an intensive process that allows each craf tsman to make no more than 20 pairs per day. sabah.am

A Blunt Force Actress Emily Blunt Steps into New Shoes for Her New Roles. By Ginger Harris

mily Blunt ha s come a long way since the days of taking direct orders f ro m Mir a n d a Pr ie s t l y and fashion shaming Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. Not only did th e f ilm intro duce t h e B r i t i s h a c t re s s t o American audiences, it also landed her a Golden Globe nomination, as well as a BAFTA nomination and put her on the fa st track to the spotlight. Suddenly, everyone knew who Emily Olivia Leah Blunt was, what she was wearing (Valentino, McCartney, Prada, Dior) and what she would be starring in next. A s f o r h e r f u t u re ro l e s , s h e h a s t wo u p co m in g f ilm s t h at h ave H o ll y wo o d hyped. This year, Blunt will release The G irl on the Train, a f ilm b a se d on the b o ok by Paula Hawk ins that sp ent 1 3 consecutive weeks in the top spot on the New York Times’ best-seller list. It’s a role that is the polar opposite of her The Devil Wears Prada character. Previously, she flaunted designer gowns and shoes that would make any fashionista drool, in this new role, makeup isn’t even part of the costume. As Rachel Watson, she plays the

role of an addict whose post-divorce life is turned upside down. It’s a part even her husband, John Krasinski, was surprised to see her in, telling time.com as he watched the movie, “For the first time ever, I forgot it was my wife.” Much like her advancing career, Blunt’s personal life has also evolved to allow the actress to take on new roles—the first of which being wife. After dating Krasinski for a year, the two married in Italy in 2010. In 2014, they welcomed daughter Hazel into their lives, casting Blunt as the role of young mother. Her encore a s mom started this past summer when daughter Violet was born. Perhaps those new characters she’s taken on have influenced her next highly anticipated film: a sequel to Mary Poppins, dubbed Mary Poppins Returns, due out in 2018. Blunt will bring the classic Disney character back to the screen, a gigantic h o n o r f o r t h e En g l i s h s t a r w h o g r e w up admiring Julie Andrews. She’s been quoted as saying, “There’s nobody who c a n o u t d o J u l i e A n d r e w s . S h e ’s e m blematic of our countr y in many ways.” Those are big shoes to fill. But Blunt will cer tainly make the roll as legendar y as her The Devil Wears Prada Louboutins.

Career s t h g i l h g Hi A Look at Blunt’s Rise to Stardom.

2003 Her role of Isolda opposite Alex Kingston in Warrior Queen gains her international recognition. 2004 She receives critical acclaim for her portrayal of a deceptive 16-year-old in My Summer of Love. 2006 Blunt stars in Irresistible alongside Susan Sarandon. Yet, it was The Devil Wears Prada, the film that brought her mainstream attention and a Golden Globe nomination, that became a box-office hit. 2007 The actress appears in The Jane Austen Book Club as part of an ensemble cast, and wins a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for Gideon’s Daughter. 2010 A short role in Charlie Wilson’s War gives her the opportunity to take a risk as a congressman’s racy daughter alongside Tom Hanks. She also plays Princess Mary in Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black. And the year is topped off with a Golden Globe, Best Actress nomination for her work in The Young Victoria.

68

2011 Playing a contemporary ballerina, Blunt twists the fate of Matt Damon’s politician character in The Adjustment Bureau. That same year, Salmon Fishing in Yemen was released and her performance was later applauded with a Golden Globe nomination in 2013. 2012 Blunt is praised for adding depth to sci-fi actioner Looper. 2014 Edge of Tomorrow and Into the Woods release. The latter grabs her another Golden Globe nomination in 2015.

2016 Blunt plays Queen Freya in the much-anticipated The Huntsman: Winter’s War and stars as a determined divorcee in The Girl on the Train.

Looking Ahead Her next raving fans may in fact be her children as she lends her voice to the upcoming animated films, Animal Crackers, My Little Pony, and Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes and also plays Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns.

UNIONS Say I do with these contemporary pieces. By Brenda Sotelo

Vintage

More is better when it comes to the vintage- style ring. Think color and lots of details. In this case, the setting is just as important as the gemstones and diamonds used to make the ring a showstopper. Vintage bands are usually very ornate or daring with bold setting features inspired by Victorian or Art Deco eras, making them unforgettable.

Drop Down

Clockwise from top left: Vena D’ Amore; True Love Diamonds; Danyal Paraiba; Diamonds International ring.

For the glamorous type who appreciates a sparkle, there’s the drop-shaped style. The ring’s unusual diamond setting closer to the edge instead of the center gives the eye the illusion that it’s dangling from the band, attracting more light and glow. The pear-shape diamond is a favorite for this look, and Katherine Heigl is among the Hollywood stars wearing the trend.

A touch of color is a great choice for those who want to stand out from the crowd. There are all sorts of color diamonds and several shades of each. Blue diamonds are unique while dark tones like black make a bold statement. Actress Michelle Yeoh has made the blue diamond ring a red carpet favorite.

Gemstones

Vibrant gems are a great alternative to traditional and color diamonds. Tourmaline and emeralds give an instant vintage vibe, making any ring a timeless piece, while sapphires occur in rainbows of hues. Zooey Deschanel brought the tourmaline into the lime light when she wore a big, bold piece on her middle finger to the Emmys .

Discover what sunglass style fits your face and personality best.

Sunglasses are more than every man and woman’s sartorial blessing; they’re a nod to your attitude and own personal style. Are you more of a cool wayfarer kind of guy, or are you a sophisticate who’s never without her tortoiseshell cat-eyes? Do you opt for aviators a la Top Gun or are you an interesting intellectual who’s never without a set of round rims? Of course, choosing the right pair of sunglasses is a delicate balance to strike, between style and what frames suit your face best. And knowing what works and what doesn’t is essential before stepping on deck. Here’s a simple guide to help you find the perfect set of sunnies.

If Your Face Is Heart-Shaped…

If Your Face Is Oval-Shaped… You have hit the jackpot of eyewear, because most frames are made in your favor. Take advantage of your blessing by handpicking a unique pair of sunglasses. With your features, there’s no such thing as too eccentric, too big, too abstract, or too much color.

If Your Face Is Square… Soften your features with a pair of quirky round shades. There’s no limit on the fun patterns, colors and materials you can choose, plus plenty of brands are beginning to introduce these to their lineup. Keep it simple with a nice tortoiseshell pattern or have fun and choose a bold hue with contrasting legs.

88

A set that wings up slightly, like wayfarers or cat-eye sunglasses, will bring out the best of your features, which can include a wider forehead, high cheekbones, and a v-shaped jawline and chin. Enjoy oversized shapes — your face can handle it!

If Your Face Is Round... Squaring off your face with a pair that includes defined and symmetrical corners, like wayfarers, will be the most flattering look. These classic sunnies add an element of cool to any ensemble and are typically available in a variety of colors. Amplify the eclecticism with a pair that’s made with acetate at the top and metal below.

Beach Style goes way beyond bathing suits and flip-flops when sand, surf and cinema crash into the sea. B y A n n a Vo i s a r d

Beach Blanket Retro

Beehives and mod glamour were the name of Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon’s game. The most famous of the beach party genre, Beach Blanket Bingo follows burge oning per former Suga r K a ne and the sur f gang that protects her from some shady bikers. The ladies of the crew sing and dance in quintessential retro looks that rely on simple 1960s pin-up girl cues like halter tops and high waist s in primar y-color solids and polka dots. For the guys, snug swim trunks show off their well-bronzed skin. Yeah, let’s give it a whirl!

Seaworthy

From top: Daryl Hannah in Splash; Pamela Anderson in Baywatch; the squad from Beach Blanket Bingo; and Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush.

92

Dar yl Hannah’s ethereal look in 1984’s Splash is dictated by her barely-there mermaid ensemble. Luck ily, her long crimp e d lock s provide a natural cover-up. When she tracks a down a young Tom Hanks in New York City, she learns the hard way (by getting arrested for PG-rated indecent exposure) that clothes are part of life on solid ground. Out of the sea, Madison, who names herself after the NYC avenue, learns to dress the human part. In true 1980s form, her hair stays big and her style speaks nymph. Boxy shoulders, small floral prints, and sof t pastels make her look seawor thy for the era . Eventually, af ter esc a ping pr ying scientists and investigators, the pair give up on the terrestrial world and its fashion trappings for a magical life together under the sea. No jacket required.

Waterproof Style Blue Crush, the 2003 millennial teen classic, gave Kate Bosworth her big Hollywood break. But the natural beach beauty broke more than waves as Anne Marie, a local Hawaiian surf star trying to come back after a near-death drowning that scared her sur f ing instinct. The style stays true to the landscape. Tiny bikinis, board shor ts and saltwater hair reign. The No. 1 rule: Surfers are always ready to get wet. There is nothing precious about Anne Marie’s look, even as she dons freshly blown-out hair, heels and a low-cut dress for a hot date with her football-st ar boyfriend. She still ends up in the ocean without a flinch. All’s swell that ends swell!

Baywatch Out

The 1990s Baywatch television series turned it s lifeguards into household names and style icons of strength and sexiness. No one can forget Pamela Anderson running along the coast in that highcu t re d o n e -pie ce o r a b r aw ny David Hasselhoff in his red shorts and sunglasses leaping over the waves to rescue a lucky victim. Set for a 2017 release, the f ilm rendition of the Baywatch phenomenon will let Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron climb the lifeguard stands for an updated bigscreen version. Hope those red bathing suits haven’t changed!

Blue beyond words. Take a look at the shallow ocean in the Caribbean and you will begin to know the colour of Paraiba Tourmaline, except Paraiba is this colour made doubly intense. Described by experts as “neon” or “electric”, the blue of Paraiba Tourmaline is unlike anything you’ve likely seen before. Is there any point in trying to show this gemstone that is so unbelievably blue a camera can’t capture it’s intensity and a printing press can’t recreate it’s depth? A stone so remarkably blue that it can’t be shown on paper? Well then, it looks like you’ll have to come and see it in person.

Today’s

Military Watches Modern watchmakers continue to take inspiration from military timekeeping. Here are some of the best examples.

LONGINES

Inspired by a piece of equipment used by British Special Forces in the 1940s, the Longines Heritage Military COSD houses an L6169.2 self-winding calibre. It remains true to its roots with a khaki NATO strap, a railway-track minute ring and a broad arrow on top — an old British symbol indicating government property.

BREMONT

British watchmaker Bremont’s new Bremont Lightning special military edition is available to F-35 pilots only (current or former), and features a larger integrated flat crystal showcasing a bespoke watch rotor inspired by the aircraft’s axisymmetric nozzle.

CITIZEN

Citizen’s military collection features a slip-through style strap that allows easy accessibility and provides a protective barrier for the wearer in adverse conditions.

Duty By A nd rea C a rnei ro

T he a rme d forces a nd f a shion trends may not se em the mos t obvious of bedfellows, but for history buffs and fashionistas alike the coupling is often front and center. From camouflage to cargo pants, civilians have taken cues from military style for longer than most can remember.

B Brem Lightn ed F-35 or fo a lar cr be inspir ax

While experts vary on where the military watch originated (some say the German Imperial Navy, some the British military) all agree that the wristwatch came directly from military influence. The first pieces were nothing more than revamped pocket watches strapped to the wrists of soldiers looking to free up their hands for firing weapons and engaging in other wartime activities. For watchmakers and trend historians, however, one of the greatest ideas to come out of these somewhat homemade wristwatches was that of function over fashion. Legend has it that during the second Boer war in South Africa, B ritish troops used some of the f ir s t milit a r y wris t watches to coordinate perfectly timed attacks, ultimately winning the war. When watchmakers heard the feedback they wasted no time in marketing the newfound trend to the public. One of the more popular and long-lasting trends to come from the military watch is the NATO strap, a traditionally nylon pass-through strap with a fixed metal buckle and two metal rings. While the watch was first commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense, the name actually comes from the classification (NATO G10) rather than the worldwide organization of the same name. These simple straps were popular among military personnel for being strong and functional, as well as for allowing the case to remain in the exact same spot on the wrist at all times. Originally only available in “Admiralty Grey,” today’s NATO straps come in endless color and stripe combinations, winning fans in both watch collectors and fashionistas. Watch-giant Bremont offers one favorite: a nylon, leather and stainless steel beauty with a convenient Velcro strap. Another functional offering from watchmakers came in the form of “luminous watches.” Watchmakers would paint the numbers with radium paint, allowing the watch to glow and soldiers to read the time in the dark. Even today, fans of the military watch are often attracted to the distinctive look of the black dial and luminescent numerals. Other watch innovations linked to militar y influence include the rotating bezel (developed by Longines for Lindbergh’s 1929 flight) and Panerai’s luminous waterproof men’s watches for naval divers. The A-11 watch, featuring the ubiquitous black dial and clear numbers, was one of the first mass-produced quality watches offered up by companies such as Bulova, and was reportedly worn by the U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, as well as the the Royal Canadian and Soviet Air Forces, and British Royal Air Force during World War II. More recently, Vietnam veterans came home touting the performance of humidity-resistant Seiko watches and modern-day soldiers have taken a liking to Casio’s super-durable G-Shock. While civilians may crave more and more wearable technology (a la the Apple watch), military and tactical watch buyers still give weight to accuracy, strong battery life and proper design. Form follows function, indeed.

How that cute little paper umbrella got in your drink. By Ni k ki Novo Nothing says vacation quite like the classic tiki cocktail. Ingredients like simple syrup and lots of rum are typically reserved for days away from the office. And how often do we really get to drink out of a real coconut or a ceramic tiki topped with an adorable paper umbrella?

it

a

ly

Not only does that small paper accessory make us each giddy inside, is also symbolic of an entire era of American pop culture. Our curiosity for its origin led us down a rabbit hole filled with Hollywood romance, mid-century America, a couple of West Coast charmers and, of course, Hawaiian bartender. Tropical Transport We first read about the legendary Victor J. Bergeron, founder of the equalfamous Polynesian-themed restaurant Trader Vic’s. Bergeron, called a “born promoter” by the San Francisco Gate, was the first to take credit for inventing the mai tai in Oakland, California, in 1944. Yet, Bergeron was said to be influenced by his competitor Don the Beachcomber, a Hollywood bar founded by former Prohibition bootlegger Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt. After traveling the Caribbean and South Pacific, Gantt settled in California in 1931 and shortly after built a bar that sat about two dozen customers. It was also one of the first bars using umbrellas in its drinks.

Being that rum was the least expensive of the spirits — plus it went with his South Pacific theme — Gantt created a menu of exotic cocktails made to transport his customers to a tropical vacation. In a 1989 Wall Street Journal article, a then-82-year-old Gantt took ownership of the mai tai, as well.

With a tropicalinspired drink, any day can be a holiday. Here are just a few favorites taken from Jeff Berry’s must-have cocktail book, Beachbum Berry’s Potions of the Caribbean.

Hurricane Buster (By Joe Scialom, Caribe Hilton, 1957) Parasol Potions Why does this all matter? The paper umbrella was created in China, and based on our research, the tiny parasols in your drink also come from China. Before opening up shop in Hollywood, Gantt worked odd jobs, including a few as a waiter at Chinese restaurants. Some say Chinese restaurants were, in fact, the first to use the small decorations.

R E C I P E P H O T O S C O U R T E S Y O F J E F F B E R R Y.

Gantt was often credited for telling his customers, “If you can’t get to paradise, I’ll bring it to you.” Was adding a kitschy umbrella (inspired by his days as a waiter) to your drink a way of bringing sunshine into your life? Possibly. Books like Sven Kristen’s Book of Tiki and the documentary film The DVD of Tiki detail how post-war romanticism formed Polynesian pop in American culture. “The summation of my three books on tiki culture is that while it is inspired by Polynesia, it is its own genre: an American pop culture icon, a mainland fantasy of island paradise,” says Kristen. But if you ask Jeff Berry, the author of six books on vintage tiki drinks and cuisine, he’ll give you a straight answer: It was a bartender named Harry Yee who first started the trend. “Yee says he first put them in a drink called the Tapa Punch, at the Hawaiian Village Hotel on Waikiki Beach in the late 1950s,” says Berry. Berry explains that Yee would garnish his beverages with a sugarcane, but after scrubbing one too many chewed sticks from the ashtrays, he knew he had to come up with something different. First it was an orchid and then the umbrella. Originally, the umbrellas were behind the bar to be used as toothpicks. Yet as history shows, it seems these colorful canopies were less about providing shade than attracting the limelight.

For a Round Belly If the allure of a white bikini appeals to you, consider a ruched one-piece. The ruching is both supportive and forgiving. Tommy Bahama’s Pearl Twist (above) will hug you in all the right places.

For Those Who Are Boy-Shaped If you’re the opposite of shapely and need to create the illusion of bigger hips and a bustier frame, make curves with a cut-out monokini. Peixoto (right) makes one that’s perfect for a seaworthy getaway.

For Top-Heavy Girls

PHOTOS COURTESY OF

If you’re craving a white suit but want to balance out your figure because you’re frame is topheavy, consider a structured cup suit, like Tommy Bahama’s Pearl Solids (below). Not only does it offer support, it will also give you a great shape. Consider pairing with a high-waisted bottom for a retro feel.

For a Curvy Figure Don’t be afraid to flaunt those curves in a form-fitting one-piece. But if you’re looking to add a little length to your legs, go for a high-cut suit with a sleek top to help balance out those curves. Tommy Bahama (above) offers a stunning white suit for shapely forms.

For Those Who Are Bottom-Heavy A skirted bikini bottom does more than just look cute at the water’s edge, it also works well for a bottomheavy frame. It provides coverage without making you look too modest. Tommy Bahama (below) makes a cute one that ties on the side to bring a whole new feel to the look.

For Small-Chested Girls Ruffles are a small-chested girl’s best friend to help create curves upstairs. Flounce creates volume, which is a perfect fit for this type of frame. Get the look at Victoria’s Secret before you head off on your getaway. (pictured opposite page) 103

Fashion designer Shadi Askari-Farhat on the fundamentals of a perfect beach bag. B y V i rgi nia G i l

Do you design with certain destinations in mind?

I love to travel, whether for relaxation or adventure or visiting destinations rich with history. Every destination influences my designs.

What makes the perfect beach bag? After a swimsuit, a beach bag is the most important thing you’ll need on a Caribbean vacation. And the struggle to f ind the perfect one is a plight MISA Los Angeles and T-Bags Los Angeles fashion designer Shadi Askari-Farhat can wholly understand. In 2000, when she couldn’t find the right one, she set out to create her own — crafted from handmade pieces to vibrant vintage fabrics and trims. Fast-forward 16 year s , and her handbag collec tions for both lines are just as popular as ever. Askari-Farhat, fastidious about what she carries, shared some insight into the ultimate tropical accessory.

From top right: Designer Shadi Askari-Farhat takes a break next to her own Voyage tote; MISA Mercado tote.

Beach bags are an essential part of your holiday wardrobe. They scream good vibes and sunshine! Size is everything when it comes to beach bags — you will need room for books, sun cream, towels, food, etc.

What styles and materials work best for a beach bag? The style is very important to me because on my holidays, I use my beach bags from sea to city. You don’t have to wait until June to carry them. In Los Angeles, I wear one to work, while running errands and even use it as a gym bag. For materials, I love straw.

What are some of the beach bag trends you’re seeing emerge? Customization (monograms and words), stripes, and colorful fringe and pom-pom embellishments.

Beach bags are for your bread, your towel and all of your secrets. What is the relationship between a style of bag and a destination? Do some looks work best for certain places?

I have carried my Marrakesh Basket from Mexico to Italy, from sea to sightseeing.

How do you make a beach bag your own? Customize them, for sure! Our Marrakesh straw totes are hand sprayed with anything from initials to your child’s name, or your favorite holiday phrase: Ciao, hola, siesta, mare, sol and more!

Are you of the opinion that beach bags are strictly for the beach or can they be used for every day? Beach bags are for your bread, your towel and all of your secrets.

Save Your Skin From the Heat’s Beauty Woes. B y Ro b i n D ia mond While we long for the most anticipated time of the year — our tropical vacation, warm weather also yields some unwelcomed beauty issues. From burns to breakouts, board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Leslie Baumann, founder and CEO of Baumann Cosmetic Institute and author of The Skin Type Solution shares tips on how to treat sun-induced beauty blunders with items already in your home or at a nearby drugstore.

Banish Breakouts  As things heat up, so can your skin’s oil production. Couple that with added sun exposure and sweat and you have the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which leads to acne flare-ups. If a blemish pops up before a big event and you don’t have time to visit your dermatologist for a cortisone shot, Dr. Baumann says, “Place an ice cube on the blemish to help bring down the swelling and apply a bit of cortisone cream.” Another quick tip: Dabbing Visine on an inflamed pimple can also subdue redness.

Stave Off Sunburn Pain When UV rays are beaming, it’s easy to miss a spot when applying sunscreen just as it is to forget to reapply. Once skin is scorched, Dr. Baumann suggests taking two ibuprofen pills every four hours. She also recommends taking 1000mg of vitamin C, and then 500mg twice a day after that. To soothe the burn topically, use aloe, which also hydrates. Soothing from the inside out, Dr. Baumann notes, “Extra antioxidants can help prevent cell damage, so also try to drink some green tea.”

Dr. Leslie Baumann

A c c o r d i n g t o Boinis, the cacao contains powerful polyphenol antioxidants; the honey calms inflammation, sof tens and rejuvenates skin; and the avocado adds minerals, vitamin A and skinnourishing fats. “This recipe makes enough for two facials, or one facial and one great dessert. Seriously. Try it.

Mash half an avocado, 1 to 2 tablespoons of cacao power and 1 tablespoon of raw honey together with the back of a fork or blend in a small food processor. Smooth the paste on skin and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse, pat dry and revel in velvety, soft and smooth skin.

Bye-Bye, Bug Bites Mosquitos, no-see-ums, ants and other pesky insects like to make their debut in the heat. If dealing with a bite, try these quick remedies. “Topical steroids such as hydrocortisone work well for rashes but do not seem to help redness and itching associated with bug bites. Pramoxine is an over-the-counter anesthetic treatment for itching found in brands such as Itch-X and Gold Bond Anti-Itch. Believe it or not, hemorrhoid creams such as Analpram and Rectocort-HC contain hydrocortisone and pramoxine, and therefore can be used for itching due to bug bites as well,” says Dr. Baumann.

Packing’s a breeze with clothing that multitasks. By Ginger Harris When it comes to travel, less is more. That’s why it’s best to look to pieces that multitask when packing for your vacation. Not only do these dynamic items take up less room, but they also double as additional wardrobe staples. Before your next trip, try these cool ideas on for size — and save space for those souvenirs.

A DRESS a To p as

Packing a shirtdress is a great way to get two looks in one. Simply knot your stylish top and pair with a skirt, pants or shorts for a first round. Then, for round two, add a belt and double your options. Get the look with this chambray shirt dress available at Lulus.com.

A SCARF Shi rt i nto a

Scarves are every girl’s go-to when it comes to making the most of your wardrobe. Twist it into a turban, knot it into a pareo, or toss it over your shoulders as a wrap. But if you really want to go the distance with this piece, fold and tie to make a tropical-inspired top. Try this Mossaic scarf from Tous for unlimited options.

A DRESS S k i rt i nto a

A tube dress is always a good idea. It goes from top to skirt to dress with the addition of a few accessories and staples. For your first look, simply wear the tube as a dress. Add a belt and necklace to add dimension. Next, bring along a high-waisted, full skirt and simply tuck your tube into your skirt to transition your piece into a top. And for an encore bring along a flowy top and transition your dress as a skirt. And gentlemen, do not fret. Your watch habit will not hold you down. Rather than protecting your timepieces individually, pack one Wolf watch roll, which can fit up to three pieces. They are kept safe with Watch Guards, ultrasuede lining and snap closure.

Get Nailed

Keep your fingers on the pulse with these celebrity nail artist tips and tricks. By Ash ley Broz ic

G one are the days of French manicures and pedicures. Instead, we’ve entered an age where no manicure is too creative, no color is too bright, and no design is too bold; where manicurists are no longer just manicurists, but instead nail artists can recreate Louvre masterpieces on a centimeter scale. Such is the case of Kimmie Kyees, a celebrity nail artist whose black book includes Rihanna, Khloe Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Katy Perr y and Eva Longoria. With more than 20 years of experience in the nail industry and a social media following that runs well into the tens of thousands, she knows a thing or two about this year’s hottest nail trends, which are as minimal as they are full of sparkle and sponge.

Metallics & Glitter

This year, all that glitters and sheens is on your fingertips, which makes metallics and sparkles your new travel companions. “I am a huge fan of all things glitter or metallic,” says Kyees. “I achieve these looks using loose glitter or the new foil leaf gel colors by Vetro.”

SPONGE ART The popularization of ombre was a blessing to the hair industry, and now we can apply the same principles to our nails. Shifting colors on your fingertips is easier than it seems, and you can make it as subtle as you like by using the same family of shades, or as bold as you wish by pairing complementary colors. “I use makeup sponges to create ombre nails or faded nails,” says Kyees. “Nails that look like they have been spray painted or splattered ... there are so many different things you can do with sponges!”

NEGATIVE SPACE Graphic designers and artists live by this rule: embrace negative space. This means not filling every centimeter of your nail bed with color, but instead letting just a few design elements live and breathe on their own. “By simply not painting parts of the nail you can create super-fun and amazing shapes and lines,” says Kyees. You can even try it with actual shapes, placing stickers on parts you don’t want painted, and then painting around the rest.
