“I’m honored to be appointed the Chief Fun Officer at Carnival — a company that lives and breathes fun.” Carnival President Christine Duffy with the new CFO.

CLASS CLOWN O’Neal has been building his resume as Mr. Fun since his early days. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Lucille O’Neal, a single mom who he says is still an inspiration. She married career Army Sgt. Phillip Harrison when her son was six years old. Harrison’s job brought the family to military bases in West Germany and Texas, and the young O’Neal rebelled against Harrison’s strict discipline. But by the time high school rolled around, he’d emerged as a wunderkind (one with size 20 feet; they’re now a size 22). He led his team to a 68-1 record over two years, drawing comparisons to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for his hook shots.

Shaquille O’Neal spent his childhood focused on becoming the world’s best basketball player, causing him to miss out on some playtime as a kid. It’s only natural, then, that as a grown-up kid-at-heart with a penchant for playfulness he sought out Treehouse Masters’ Pete Nelson to build him an arboreal retreat in his Georgia backyard so he could play cards and drink with friends. Nelson and his crew got to work, and at one point, the 7'1" jokester managed to sneak up on the crew as they pored over plans. The finished product — an oversized, over-the-top mancave complete with a Prohibition Era-style bar and lounge, a regal portrait and a custom game table — left him jumping for joy. “It’s incredible!” he says. “I choose to have fun in my everyday life no matter how busy I get. It is so important to find time to enjoy life.” Now, the charismatic basketball legend who has epitomized fun for decades is, in fact, a CFO — as in Chief Fun Officer — for Carnival Cruise Line. “I’ve always just wanted to have fun and put a smile on people’s faces,” he says. “I’m just trying to do my part in making everyone’s day a little bit better.”

including SkyRide, Havana pool, Cloud 9 Spa, Guy’s Burger Joint and, of course, the basketball court. “I was blown away with how much there is to do while on board,” he says. “Cruising is great because there is something on the ship for every member of the family. The kids can enjoy the ropes course at SportSquare or Camp Ocean, while the adults can relax and hang out by the pool.” “We are very excited to have Shaq as part of the Carnival team,” says Carnival President Christine Duffy. “He will serve as a great partner ensuring everyone knows all about our one-ofa-kind brand of fun. We’re confident that his embodiment of our brand values will inspire America to Choose Fun and discover the authentic, participatory and social atmosphere that Carnival offers.” O’Neal takes the fun seriously. “In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to choose fun, especially when everyone is busy with work, family, and life in general,” he says. “So, I’m honored to be appointed the Chief Fun Officer at Carnival — a company that lives and breathes fun.”

FUN ON THE JOB

O’Neal went on to play at Louisiana State University (LSU), leaving after his junior year to join the Orlando Magic as the NBA’s first overall draft pick. He made NBA history as the first to be named Player of the Week his first week in the league. He went on to become one of the league’s most dominant players of all time, snagging four championship rings, Olympic gold and an induction into the Hall of Fame. He made national

As CFO, O’Neal lends his fun, larger-than-life personality and playful spirit to inspire travelers to “Choose Fun” with Carnival when planning their next vacation, and in their everyday lives. His role has been brought to life via engaging video content, social media and other promotions. He starred in a whirlwind 30-second video tour of Carnival Vista which showed him enjoying the ship’s many attractions and experiences,

Shaquille O’Neal

“When I’m at work, I keep things light and always try to make everyone around me laugh.”

headlines for thunderous slam dunks that broke the supports holding the basket. “Being able to do what I love in front of my fans is what makes it all so fun,” he says. O’Neal traded the locker room for the television studio in 2011, signing on as an analyst for Inside the NBA. There, he’s established a cult following alongside Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith. “When I’m at work, I keep things light and always try to make everyone around me laugh,” he says.

THE GOOD DOCTOR As he churned out rap albums and movies between slam dunks, he also was taking summer and independent study classes from LSU. One Saturday in 2000, eight years after he’d left school for the NBA, O’Neal missed a game with his team’s blessing. While the LA Lakers played the Vancouver Grizzlies, he attended his graduation ceremony and picked up his bachelor’s diploma. The following day, the graduate was back with his team in Toronto. But he wasn’t done studying yet. “My mother always taught me that education is important,” O’Neal says. “Getting an education — both in school and in life — is critical to success so I want to make sure others know how important it is and how it will help them throughout their lives.” He earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix

in 2005. Then, in 2012, a year after he retired from the game and four years after he enrolled, he earned his doctorate in education from Barry University in Miami. “Getting inducted into the Hall of Fame [in 2016] and winning the four championships stand out, but I’m also very proud of my academic accomplishments,” he says. “Getting my Ph.D. and MBA are two things I’m very proud of.” What’s next for the doctor? He was sworn in as a reserve officer in Miami and L.A. while on teams there. Does he want to be a sheriff? “When the time is right, yes,” he says. “The to-do list is FULL. There are a lot of things I still want to accomplish!”

SHAQ DADDY But nothing makes him prouder than his children. “The best part about being a dad is watching my kids grow and succeed,” he says. “I am such a proud father, and it is great being able to watch them realize and achieve their goals and dreams.” They, of course, have a good time together. “I love making new memories with them and traveling is definitely a part of that,” he says. “I also would like to mention that we are the best dancing family out there!” He also keeps his mom on speed dial. “My mom has been an incredible inspiration to me,” he says. “I talk to her a lot, especially if I need advice, and see her as often as I can. We’re going to take a cruise together soon!”

With its classic cars, pastel buildings, Old World glamour and sparkling sea, Havana has long captured the imagination.

But the old city is much more than that. Think 500 years of architecture, a diverse and vibrant arts scene and authentic culinary experiences from intimate bar s and paladares to coz y hostales (hotels). And that’s just the beginning. One of the most colorful ways to get around is via one of the c.1950s Fords, Chev ys or Oldsmobiles that are still in use, but Havana is a walking city, too. Get a sense of Cuba’s capital by strolling the famed Malecón seawall, the esplanade that defines the city edge and provides a colorful walk for residents and visitors alike. Among the monuments, you’ll find the historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba on Taganana Hill. Opened in 1930, it’s an eclectic fusion of Sevillian, Roman, Moorish and Art Deco architectural styles, and has hosted hundreds of VIPS, from nobility and politicians to writers and actors. If you have to pick one of the city’s 15 districts to visit, head to the UNESCO-recognized Old Havana (Habana Vieja). Stroll along the grand Old Square (Plaza Vieja), formerly the site of public spectacles such as bullfights and processions and now a stately collection of Colonial buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Take in the Paseo del Prado, the boulevard that divides the central and old city, lined with magnificent examples of grand hotels, cinemas and mansions. CUISINE TO PLEASE The cuisine is as varied as the architecture, from the traditional ropa vieja, a shredded beef dish simmered in tomato and green pepper sauce, to modern takes on seafood. And there’s seemingly no limit to the ways plaintains, rice and beans are prepared. Paladares — eateries in private homes — offer intimate and authentic dining, and hotels like Ambos Mundos feature rooftop dining with a historic twist (yes, Ernest Hemingway ate here). If you like get ting your sustenance in a glass, Havana’s historic drinking culture will sate you with rum-based cocktails such as mojitos, daiquiris, margaritas, cuba libres and pina coladas. Walk in Hemingway’s footsteps and visit Bodeguita for mojitos and El Floridita for daiquiris.

Industry Recognition The important aspect of this premium cut is its contrast to other well-cut diamonds of similar quality in the critical light dispersion category. The diamond's extraordinary fire is a proven trait, the result of exhaustive lab examinations. This distinction is lauded by AGS (American Gem Society) laboratories acknowledging its superior fire to other well-cut diamonds; and refers to its distinct cut as The Crown of Light Cut. Production sizes range from .01 carats up to 16.88 carats.

Raising Expectations These diamonds must fall into the excellent to very good category for cut, polish and symmetry, or they are rejected. Strict in-house grading reports accompany Crown of Light jewelry pieces. The result is a unique diamond that resonates with consumers who long for something that no one else has.

HOW TO HAVE A PERFECTLY FUN DAY IN PORT You’re here! Ready for a day of fun, sun and adventure? Of course you are! But where to begin? You have so many choices — a whole different set of choices in each port. One destination may be known for its great diving, the next for fascinating history, still another for luxurious beach days. And while everyone knows shopping is tops in every Caribbean port, where can you find exactly what you’re looking for? Great news: You have a shipload of experts to help you, and just three simple rules for having the time of your life in port:

1. ALWAYS BOOK YOUR EXCURSIONS WITH CARNIVAL ADVENTURES.

Carnival Adventures is an exceptional program of shore excursions. Not just another “been there, done that” set of tours, these carefully crafted experiences are tailored for today’s traveler, from young couples to multi-generational families.

Excursions are offered by trusted local providers and are continually reviewed by a team of experts.

We are Team Orange. The program also carries Carnival’s three-part promise of quality: THE BEST EXCURSIONS AT THE BEST PRICE, WITH GUARANTEED PEACE OF MIND. Carnival takes care of all the details for you, and you’ll never worry about getting back to the ship on time. Visit the Carnival Adventures desk on board for more information.

TEAM ORANGE IS ON IT

• We are the most experienced, knowledgeable team around.

• We are constantly fine-tuning selections to make sure everything is up to exacting standards — especially yours.

• We are the first off the ship and last on, to make sure you’re having the time of your life.

• Have questions about your excursion? Want some

2. GET THE HUB APP.

The Carnival HUB app is the ultimate cruise companion — and it’s free! Download it to your smartphone and you’ll always be connected to all the fun on board and ashore. You can plan and book your shore excursions, check on itinerary details, stay in touch with friends on the ship, and so much more. It’s free to download from your phone’s app store and free to use (except for the chat feature). With the HUB app, fun is always at your fingertips!

3. SHOP ONLY FROM RECOMMENDED STORES

The Caribbean offers some of the best shopping in the world. This is the place to find incredible jewelry, watches and other gifts (especially for yourself) and amazing tax and duty free savings. Shopping in port is a pleasure when you stick to stores recommended by your onboard shopping guides. They have lots of resources to help you, from port maps to coupons for the absolute best deals. But it’s the confidence you get from shopping only at recommended stores. You’ll never have to worry about the quality of your purchases, and if you have questions when you get back home you can easily reach our customer service department.

INSIDER’S GUIDE

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Amber Cove. Amber Cove is in the heart of the breathtaking Amber Coast in the northern region of the Dominican Republic, and is just five miles from the bustling historic beach town of Puerto Plata. Its name is a nod to the amber that comes from the region’s amber mines, which are among the richest in the world. Situated in a stunning coastal inlet, with a lush tropical landscape, towering mountains and more than two dozen waterfalls as a backdrop, the port proper features dramatic architecture and design elements that echo the region’s colonial past. Cobblestone streets and plazas lead to everything an arriving guest could want. Its convenient recreation areas include a large pool with slides and other water features, a selection of water sports and a vibrant marketplace offering locally sourced crafts and souvenirs. Visitors can enjoy lively themed restaurants and bars.

PORT SNAPS FORT SAN FELIPE

Shore excursions out of Amber Cove are ranked as some of the best in the Caribbean, from dolphin encounters and horseback rides to coffee plantation visits featuring traditional Dominican dishes. Nearby Ocean World, one of the region’s largest marine adventure parks, also offers a range of opportunities to experience and interact with marine life.

DENNIS VAN DE WATER/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Touring nearby Puerto Plata also has been very popular with Amber Cove visitors. The historic city was founded as the village of La Isabella in the late 1490s by Christopher Columbus and his brother, Bartolomé, and is the site of Fort San Felipe, the first fort built by European settlers in the New World. Puerto Plata is home to many artist studios, rum and cigar factories, the Amber Museum and the Malecón, a three-mile-long beachfront boardwalk with even more restaurants, bars and shopping. Many cruise memories have already been made in and near Amber Cove. Now it’s time to add yours!

Also known as Fortaleza San Felipe, the historic fortress is strategically perched on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was commissioned in 1564 by King Felipe II of Spain and completed in 1577. Today, it's a museum of military artifacts.

Get down (under the water) in a submarine. Suit up to scuba. Snap some cool nature pics.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Aruba. Everything Dutch comes alive in Oranjestad — from gabled architecture to delicious cheeses and exquisite blue Delft china. But not all of its attractions are imported. Oranjestad’s picturesque harbor boasts many tempting boutiques at the Renaissance Mall and Marketplace. Treasures such as Mopa Mopa art await in the shops along Caya G.F. Betico Croes, a delightful setting with classic Dutch-gabled, pastel-hued store facades. The legacy at the Numismatic Museum is a rich one — literally. It contains some 40,000 historic coins and paper money from more than 400 countries. More heritage is on display at the Aruba Historical Museum. It can be reached with a walk down bustling L.G. Smith Boulevard to Fort Zoutman and the King Willem III Tower. At lunchtime, try a bowl of tasty keshi yena, an island specialty made with minced tenderloin and chicken stewed with golden raisins, prunes and nuts, all stuffed into a round ball of Dutch Gouda cheese. Adventurous types can explore the rugged, arid north side and famous natural bridges, or head to De Palm Island for snorkeling and swimming. It might be wise to first visit the Aruba Aloe Museum and Factory, where Aruba’s signature moisturizing miracle and sunburn remedy is extracted from the island’s bountiful aloe plants.

If you’re curious to know which way the wind is blowing on this breezy island, just take a look at the divi-divi. The strong trade winds that caress the island often contort the tree into a bowed shape — sometimes so low, its trunk may run completely parallel to the parched land of the countryside.

It’s all Gouda in Aruba. We know it's cheesy but who can resist this Dutch delight, from mild and creamy jong kaas (young cheese) to the complex taste and harder texture of oude kaas (old cheese)? Rendezvous with a stingray. Explore Mayan ruins. Go tubing in a cave.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Belize. Belize is a country with a rich natural and cultural mix — from jungle animals and colorful fauna to Mayan ruins and artifacts to its watery landscape of more than 200 tropical island cays making up the nearly 200-mile-long Belizean Barrier Reef. The largest one, Ambergris Caye, can be reached on a shore excursion where manatee-watching is a must, and where a dazzling variety of colorful marine life awaits scuba divers and snorkelers. Caye Caulker, just south of Ambergris, has quiet beaches for a relaxing day trip. A short walk along Albert Street, on Belize City’s waterfront, leads visitors to the Fort George Lighthouse and to the nearby House of Culture Museum, which was once the governor’s residence. The Marine Terminal houses the Coastal Zone Museum, which showcases the barrier reef’s marine life. Mayan history, through artifacts and pottery, awaits visitors at the Museum of Belize. Many shoppers also snap up hand-carved treasures made from local wood at Market Square.

PORT SNAPS

Outside the city limits, visitors flock to the Belize Zoo, with its native ocelots and jaguars, or to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, where Black Howler monkeys frolic. The sixth-century Temple of the Green Tomb and the Temple of Masonry Altar dominate Altun Ha, Belize’s most extensively excavated Mayan ruin.

Thirty miles north of Belize City and a few miles in from the coast lie the remains of one of the most important centers in the Mayan world: Altun Ha (Water of the Rock), a major trading center for the Maya from A.D. 250 to 900, when, like the rest of the Mayan civilization, it fell into decline. The site consists of 13 temples and structures grouped around two plazas. Among the artifacts that have been recovered here are numerous pieces of jade, a gemstone which was important in Mayan society.

Climb Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. Have a spot of tea in Hamilton (and check out the bobby in the Birdcage). Relive the past at the National Museum and other spots in the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Bermuda. Pink-sand beaches and enthralling dive sites are just the beginning of Bermuda’s allure. Generous servings of history and culture await in the St. George, Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard. St. George was Bermuda's first capital (until 1815) and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Among the sites that helped it earn that distinction is St. Peter’s Church, one of the first churches built in the new world. On a lighter historic note, don't miss a reenactment of the Ducking Stool, a form of punishment in the 15th to 18th centuries in which the guilty were tied to a stool and dunked in the water multiple times. The Royal Naval Dockyard was established in 1809 as a protection against the newly independent American colonies. It is now the most visited site in Bermuda. Here you will find the National Museum of Bermuda, which houses local artist Graham Foster's two-story mural depicting 500 years of Bermuda history and culture. Hamilton, the current capital, offers everal historic buildings, shops and churches set along the Hamilton harbor. Churches in Hamilton, such as the Holy Trinity Church, are some of the oldest in the new world. Nature lovers will want to visit the Bermuda Botanical Gardens; art lovers, the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art that it contains. The collection represents Bermuda’s history, culture and heritage and includes works by such masters as Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keefe. End your day with some dining and shopping on Front Street and a tour of the historic harbor.

INSIDER’S GUIDE Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Costa Maya. Adventures loom in the colorful port of Costa Maya. Here visitors can splash in the warm turquoise sea, explore the underwater world and swim alongside schools of bright yellow angelfish. Or they might play amateur archaeologist and survey the ancient ruins in the nearby jungle. Costa Maya’s vibrant coral reefs swarm with marine life and the calm, shallow water is perfect for novice snorkelers, giving them the opportunity to see a variety of tropical fish and even sea turtles, which swim close to shore. If snorkeling isn’t for you, rent a clear-bottom kayak and paddle over the reef. Cycling is also a popular activity allowing bikers to slowly take in the sights of coastal fishing villages. Be sure to stop in at one of the small restaurants and try the fried fish — a favorite among locals. Family fun can be found at the Lost Mayan Kingdom water park containing nine waterslides, thrilling zip lines, hanging bridges and a zip coaster. Those in search of authentic history can venture to Chacchoben, an ancient site with three excavated temples, or Kohunlich, a site of ruins dating to 200 B.C. Kohunlich includes the Temple of the Masks, a pyramid with large stone faces on the temple’s exterior.

CHACCHOBEN MAYAN RUINS

Costa Maya is the home of the most popular Mayan site on the Yucatán: Chacchoben, which was a major ceremonial center until the Spanish arrived in the 15th century. Archaeologists have dated the first human settlements in the area all the way back to 100 B.C. Chacchoben was largely unknown until the 1940s, when a Yucatec Maya man came across it while searching for a spot to build his farm.

Delve into the history of the Ancient City of Tulum. Find wildlife and crystal waters at Xcaret EcoArchaeological Park. Catamaran to a prime snorkeling spot.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Cozumel. Cozumel neatly balances its cultural experiences with its more playful reputation for shopping. In San Miguel, a charming town that hugs the waterfront, tourists can find locally made treasures of silver, turquoise and leather goods, as well as pottery, stone carvings and wooden masks by Cozumel artisans. The port also claims its share of duty-free shops offering diamonds, watches and designer jewelry. The avenidas (avenues) and calles (streets) of the town’s center are easy to explore by foot. Pleasant encounters are likely with some of the Caribbean’s friendliest people, the Maya, who first settled in Cozumel some 1,700 years ago. Many still live in the thatch-roofed homes originally designed by their ancestors. Lunch in town should always begin with guacamole; Cozumel’s restaurants are said to serve some of Mexico’s best versions of this classic avocado dip. Many visitors, especially families, head south from San Miguel to visit the dolphins and sea lions at Chankanaab Park. Other attractions include the landmark Punta Sur Ecological Park and Lighthouse, home to a Mayan-ruin site, and the Celerain Lighthouse. The road to ruins leads many visitors to the archaeological site of San Gervasio, near San Miguel.

A MOMENT IN TIME HOW I FOUND TREASURE AT

A Touch of Gold

The year was 1985. The day was picture-perfect, sunny with the bluest sky and just a hint of a breeze thrown in for comfort; but most of all it was my day in Puerto Rico. I’m John, first-year cruise director in the Caribbean. I was excited because I was on my way to visit a store that was highly recommended to me; not only by returning passengers but also by many of the crew as a fine addition to my “Island” presentation given a day prior to our arrival. This is where I give an overview of where to go, what to do and, more important, what not to miss while in port. Inspired by Seafaring Days As I

As for me — little did I know at the time I said “See you later“ that it would be for the next 33 years and still counting. It struck me, on that day back in 1985, that A Touch of Gold had the most amazing and rewarding business I could imagine, bringing sheer joy to people through their merchandise. But then, I guess Jean-Pierre summed it all up perfectly when he said, “We make memories for life. It’s what we do best.” Choose Fun Ashore Carnival Cruise Line

TALE OF TULUM

Perched high on the cliffs of the Yucatรกn Peninsula is the ancient city of Tulum, the only Mayan city known to have been built on the coast. Following the paths, visitors can visualize the indigenous religious ceremonies that took place here, and appreciate the magnificent beauty of this sacred locale. Today there is little to fear from the sacrificial pit, and the only ritual that must be followed is paying a fee to use your video camera.

Generally coupled with a trip to Tulum is a visit to Xel-Hรก Lagoon. An oasis on a hot day, this soothing inland sea contains a natural underwater park and provides a wonderful respite after exploring.

Lively activities at Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort include water sports and a waterslide, and a variety of restaurants and bars lie footsteps away. For more seclusion, find soft, white beaches that beg for bare feet and splashing in marbled blue-green waters at Taino Beach just east of Lucaya. The beach is also a short walk from the authentic Bahamian settlement of Smith’s Point. The peculiar name stems from the boats' insect-like profiles and the swarming resemblance they would take on as they headed out to open water. Today, the roughly 75-boat flotilla "swarms" out to sea between midnight and dawn to shrimp or fish around the island. Meanwhile, the international custom of blessing a fishing fleet is an annual tradition that is still alive and well in Galveston.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Grand Cayman. Grand Cayman is well-known as a hub of international banking and finance, but more visitors are lured here by its extensive natural and man-made attractions. It’s a favorite getaway for many Hollywood celebrities who are drawn by its serene beauty and the variety of things it offers to see and do. The centerpiece of the island is the magnificent Seven Mile Beach, a vast expanse of powdery-white sand. Famed for diving, the island offers more than 200 named sites. Other natural attractions include the Mastic Trail, a restored 200-year-old footpath that meanders through a 2-million-year-old forest and mangrove swamp in the heart of the island; Pedro St. James National Historic Site, a restored great house dating from 1780; and the 59-acre Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. You will take a tender into port, where you’ll have plenty of time to explore. At lunchtime, save room for dessert: a slice (or more) of Grand Cayman’s world-famous rum cake. Shopping is especially rewarding in the capital of George Town, home to some of the Caribbean’s best duty-free shopping — at attractive discounts. Great finds include black-coral jewelry, luxury watches, fine perfumes and gracious dinnerware. Seekers of unique souvenirs choose caymanite — a hard stone with striations ranging in color from pale pinkish beige to deep russet — found only in the Caymans.

Swim in the sparkling turquoise seas off Governor’s Beach. Tour historic Cockburn Town and the old salt pans. Feel the velvety touch of a stingray’s wings in Gibbs Cay.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Grand Turk. As the capital of Turks and Caicos, and rumored landfall site of Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage to the New World, the small island of Grand Turk leaves quite a big impression on visitors. Famed for its exceptional diving opportunities, Grand Turk boasts an outstanding protected coral reef and the steep wall of the continental shelf, which drops 8,000 feet while still being close enough to shore for beach dives. Those not dive-certified can still take in the aquatic sights by snorkeling in the clear aquamarine waters off shore, or get up close and personal with friendly stingrays at Gibbs Cay, where the curious creatures swim to shore to interact with guests. For a dry sea life spotting experience, visitors can spot humpback whales from shore as they journey past Grand Turk during whale-watching season. A small trek inward to Cockburn Town rewards visitors with the historical essence of this enchanting island. Colonial style buildings, ruins and historic sites greet visitors with rustic charm. Among popular destinations are the Turks and Caicos National Museum, Hawks Nest Anchorage, Fire Hill and Her Majesty’s Prison.

INSIDER’S GUIDE Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Half Moon Cay. Little San Salvador, better known as Half Moon Cay, is a Bahamian slice of paradise that’s full of possibilities for choosing fun. Its world-famous, 2-mile-long beach — with crystalclear waters and sand as soft as baby powder – makes it incredibly easy to relax. Soak in the sun while listening to the soothing sounds of the sea breeze with your favorite drink in hand. The stingray is one of the more fascinating sights in Caribbean waters. It spends most of its time in the sand in shallow water, but when it does choose to move it flaps its sides or undulates its body, so it can appear to be flying through the water.

The classic Caribbean cocktail mixes rum with pineapple and orange juice and adds a splash of grenadine. We’d give you the actual recipe, but it tastes much better when you watch a bartender mix it up. Choose Fun Ashore Carnival Cruise Line

INSIDER’S GUIDE Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Miami. Miami has perhaps more cultural diversity than any other city in the country. Little Havana is primarily a Cuban neighborhood, while Little Haiti, a fascinating ethnic enclave, is full of Caribbean flavor. The lovely Mediterranean-style town of Coral Gables boasts the grand Biltmore Hotel and the Venetian Pool. In Key Biscayne, visitors can swim at gorgeous beaches, tour an historic lighthouse and participate in water sports galore. Shopping for trendy items in charming Coconut Grove makes for a fun diversion. Far west of downtown Miami lies the Everglades, a very special wetland environment that’s home to various kinds of wildlife. And last, but hardly least, is South Beach. Pastel promenade by day, neon nucleus of amusement by night, Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive — the heart of celebrated South Beach — has served as a colorful backdrop for countless photo shoots and film productions featuring stunning models and glitterati from around the world. Images of cotton-candy-colored buildings, scantily clad in-line skaters and bronzed beauties sipping icy drinks at chic sidewalk cafés pervade fashion catalogs, international magazines and the silver screen. The dazzling scene can’t get any better. It’s no wonder the world has been captivated.

ART DECO HOTELS

Miami Beach’s claim to international fame is its stunning collection of Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive. They weren’t always so glamorous. They fell into disrepair and might have been destroyed if not for the efforts of a small but dedicated group of saviors. They founded the Art Deco Historic District in the early 1980s, and the rest is . . . history.

Thick and sweet, it’s one of the many delightful results of Miami’s wave of Cuban immigration that began in the 1960s. A thimbleful usually packs enough caffeine and sugar to get you started in the morning. ¡Buenos dias! Choose Fun Ashore Carnival Cruise Line

INSIDER’S GUIDE Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Mobile. One of the oldest port cities in America, Mobile has been enchanting people since 1702. The city brims with Southern charm and hospitality, and also happens to be rated one of the coolest cities on the Gulf Coast. Its walkable downtown district offers a generous sample of locally owned shops, breweries, cafés and galleries. You may even meet some of the owners. If you’re an architecture buff, you’ll relish the remarkable architectural diversity. Be sure to catch some fresh seafood. Whether you prefer traditional or a contemporary take, Mobile’s been spicing things up in their restaurant scene. There’s also a lot of exceptional local music to venture out and enjoy. For a fun day in the sun, be sure to check out Dauphin Island. Just off the Gulf coast, this island is known for its remarkable sunsets and stretches of white sandy beaches. On the island, you can check out the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Estuarium, or take a walk through a living marsh boardwalk. Dauphin is a local favorite spot, and just 45 minutes away from port.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Montego Bay. Montego Bay scores a hole-in-one with travelers in search of thrills and sometimes a chill. Of MoBay’s photogenic great houses, none is more popular among visitors than Rose Hall, said to still be haunted by the ghost of the murderous Annie “the White Witch” Palmer. Besides phantasmic Annie, it is well known for its championship golf courses and delightful shopping at The Shoppes at Rose Hall and Half Moon Shopping Village. Both tempt travelers with jewelry, Jamaica rum and lignum vitae wood carvings made from the wood of Jamaica’s national tree. The coolest spot is the famed Doctor’s Cave Beach for a swim followed by a taste of Jamaica’s spicy jerk chicken and pork. Enjoy this treat with sweet festival bread and a cup of the island’s legendary Blue Mountain coffee, and you may have a true taste of paradise.

There's plenty of excitement in Montego Bay and other parts of Jamaica, from rainforest ziplining to mountain bobsledding and more. The beaches are one of the best reasons to go to Jamaica, and an even better reason to come back.

The best known of Montego Bay's plantation great houses is Rose Hall. The mansion is said to be haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer, who — well, we'll let you find out.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Nassau. Slip on your walking shoes if you plan to get to know the spirit and culture of the Bahamas in one day. If you’d rather save your feet, or want to add an element of romance to your visit, hire a horse-drawn surrey ride from the dock. Near the dock, you’ll pass all of Nassau’s most important and impressive government buildings, churches and monuments. Some of downtown’s historic buildings house specialty museums, such as the thought-provoking Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation at the old slave marketplace, and The Balcony House Museum, believed to be the Bahamas’ oldest wooden structure. Families will want to stop at the interactive Pirates of Nassau Museum. Downtown’s Bay Street shopping area offers everything from duty-free jewelry and perfume, to the vibrant work of local artists. For the wares at the Straw Market, you’ll need cash if you want to bargain. Among the islanders’ favorite local secrets found on West Bay Street is Arawak Cay, a collection of casual and colorful eateries and shops where fresh conch salad prepared ceviche-style is the specialty and made to order before your very eyes.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Ocho Rios. Ocho Rios may not have the eight rivers its name implies, but you wouldn’t know that standing in the powerful cascade of Dunn’s River Falls. The island’s most recognized site offers one of the Caribbean’s most unusual experiences: climbing through 600 feet of rushing mountain water, holding hands in daisy-chain formation with other adventurers. The climb ends in one of the island’s busiest craft markets, where vendors sell wood carvings and straw goods, but most travelers prefer to head to the numerous duty-free malls for more relaxed shopping. Popular purchases at Soni’s Plaza, Harbor Shops, Taj Mahal and Island Village are fine jewelry, watches, Jamaican rum and cigars. Spices are highly sought to bring home a taste of the island’s signature jerk cuisine. GOING WITH THE FLOW IN OCHO Legend has it that Martha Brae, an Arawak girl, once used magic to divert the flow of a river to drown her Spanish captors. Some of that magic still remains on the river that bears her name. The Martha Brae River winds through a pristine forest full of bamboo, exotic fruits and many species of tropical birds. The best way to see all this is from the river itself. Travelers ride 30-foot bamboo rafts along the river’s gentle waters. Once used by plantation workers to haul bananas down the Rio Grande on the east coast, the rafts became tourist attractions back in the 1940s, when Hollywood swashbuckler Errol Flynn used them to entertain his friends. Today, they come with cushioned seats for one or two passengers, and the guides, who navigate with long poles as they stand on deck, talk a bit about their homeland or even stop to grab a fruit or flower from the riverbank. Lasting an hour or more, the tours are a relaxing, up-close look at Jamaica’s Edenlike beauty.

This 140,000-acre nature sanctuary is made up of a wide variety of habitats such as coastal dunes, saltwater marshes and hardwood hammocks, providing habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals including 15 federally listed species like the West Indian manatee and gopher tortoise.

Snorkel through cavernous cenotes. Explore ancient ruins. Tube down a lazy river.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to Progreso. Rich in history and culture, the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico is a memorable experience. Docking in Progreso gives visitors access to pristine, golden-sand beaches; delightful shopping and sightseeing in the colonial town of Mérida; an incredible bird sanctuary and spectacular Mayan ruins. Start with a stop in Mérida and browse the market area for souvenirs, jewelry and handcrafts such as Mayan figurines. Then explore the local architecture. Plaza Grande is home to many historical buildings including San Adelfonso Cathedral, erected in 1598. Nearby, along Paseo de Montejo Avenue, sit several stunning French Colonial mansions. While in Mérida, be sure to taste some Yucatán cuisine, such as chilmole, a turkey meat stew. Duck into a hacienda for some rum-tasting or try xtabentun, an anise liqueur made from rum and honey, exclusive to the Yucatán peninsula. Bird lovers will want to flock south of Mérida to the Celestun Biosphere Reserve, where more than 300 species of birds including hundreds of pink flamingos can be found. North of Merida, visitors explore the ruins of Dzibilchaltun and Uxmal or can travel two hours from Progreso to the Yucatán’s largest and most impressive Mayan ruin: Chichen Itza. It features the Kukulcan pyramid, which stands 100 feet and has 365 steep steps.

Drive through El Yunque National Rainforest. Stroll through the historic Old City. Dance the night away at one of the clubs in the SOFO (South of Fortaleza) neighborhood.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to San Juan. The heart and soul of the island is Old San Juan, the historic district, which dates to the 1500s. Visitors explore historical and cultural attractions throughout the cobblestoned and walled city, strolling by the ramparts where Spanish soldiers once held watch. An energetic nightlife, including casinos and creative dining, draws visitors to different districts in San Juan. In SOFO, the “South of Fortaleza” Street neighborhood, fine restaurants double as bars for after-hours entertainment. A 10-minute drive leads to the beautiful beaches of the chic Condado, Isla Verde and Santurce areas, where sea kayaking, surfing and windsurfing are popular sports during the day, and lounges and nightclubs fire up at night. Across the lagoon from Condado, Santurce is a cultural center with attractions that include the Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Center, Central Park and La Placita de Santurce, an open-air plaza with diverse local cuisine that turns into an all-out street fest on weekend nights. Outside the city, the El Yunque rain forest is a must for those seeking Puerto Rico’s natural side. As the only rain forest in the US Forest System, it offers 28,000 acres of walking and hiking trails, bird-watching opportunities and idyllic waterfalls in which to take a refreshing dip, with rappelling and zip-lining for the more adventurous types.

OLD SAN JUAN’S BLUE BRICK ROADS

San Juan has been replacing the blue cobblestones that originally paved the streets in Old San Juan, so be sure to see them while you have the chance. The original cobblestones were cast from iron slag, the waste from iron smelting. They were brought to Puerto Rico as ballast in European merchant ships, and were first laid down on the streets in the late-18th century.

Take a walking tour through charming, history-packed streets. Get a bird's-eye view on a parasail adventure.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to St. Thomas. One of the busiest cruise destinations in the world, Charlotte Amalie is a shopper’s delight. Waterfront Highway and Main Street are a maze of side alleys connected by shopping centers, most notably A. H. Riise. Main Street’s buildings are protected as historic structures, making them a cultural delight as well. Even closer to the docks, you will find Havensight Mall, Yacht Haven Grande and Crown Bay, where dozens of stores and boutiques feature goods of every price. St. Thomas’ historic attractions are well-known and much explored: Fort Christian, with its landmark clock tower dating to 1671; the nearby Government House and Legislature Building, with its bright Caribbean-green façade; and the large mahogany altar inside Frederick Lutheran Church. Also worth a visit is Emancipation Garden, which commemorates the island’s end to slavery in 1848. Near the garden is Vendors Plaza, a source of African artwork, handbags and jewelry. You can take it all in at once on the Skyride to Paradise Point, which carries passengers to the top of Flag Hill.

Families can fill their day with discovery at the Florida Aquarium.
