ON THE BOARDS O’Neal was one of the NBA’s most dominant players of all time, snagging four championship rings, Olympic gold and an induction into the Hall of Fame. He electrified the game with thunderous slam dunks that broke the supports holding the basket. “Being able to do what I love in front of my fans is what makes it all so fun,” he says. A standout on his high school team, O’Neal wowed the crowds at Louisiana State University (LSU) and left after his junior year to join the Orlando Magic. He made NBA history as the first to be named Player of the Week his first week in the league. He wasn’t satisfied with his college career in one respect: leaving without graduating. He corrected that in 2000, finally picking up his LSU diploma after competing course work in night school. He went on to earn an MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2005 and, in 2012, a doctorate in education from Barry University in Miami. He credits his mother with instilling his belief in the importance of education. “Getting an education — both in school and in life — is critical to success so I want to make sure others know how important it is and how it will help them throughout their lives.” “Getting inducted into the Hall of Fame [in 2016] and winning the four championships stand out, but I’m also very proud of my academic accomplishments,” he says. “Getting my Ph.D. and MBA are two things I’m very proud of.” But nothing makes him prouder than his children. “The best part about being a dad is watching my kids grow and succeed,” he says. “I am such a proud fathe r, a n d i t i s g re at b e ing a b le to watc h the m realize and achieve their goals and dreams.”

Calgary-based Korite International created the ammolite industry 40 years ago and is now the global leader in the gemstone’s production. The pendant at her throat glows like a burst of rainbow fire. Its blazing colors resemble the expressive handiwork of an artist. The gemstone in it — one of the rarest in the world — has been mined, cleaned, cut, polished, designed and set, all by hand. It’s taken literally millions of years and the work of many dedicated individuals to bring this uniquely Canadian work of art to market. It’s available today thanks to the experts at Korite International. The Korite pendant is made from ammolite, an organic precious gemstone that was given official gemstone status by the World Jewellery Confederation Coloured Stone Commission in 1981. Its beautiful face is the result of an amazing voyage through time. The journey began during the Cretaceous period, about 71 million years ago, in the waters of the Bearpaw Sea that once covered parts of southern Alberta. Each piece of ammolite began life as a squid-like creature called an

ammonite. The shells of ammonites, ranging in size from tiny up to more than three feet in diameter, were transformed into brilliant ammolite thanks to the right combination of minerals, temperature, pressure and time. Seeing the Light As a gemstone, ammolite consists of hundreds of thin, iridescent layers composed mostly of the mineral aragonite. Whereas other gems’ hues come from the absorption of certain colours, the colour of ammolite comes from refraction of light. Each thin aragonite platelet acts like a tiny prism. Ammolite is also quite soft — a 3.5 to 4.5 rating on the Mohs scale, used to classify the hardness of minerals. Once it is capped with a protective layer, it is brought up to a 7.5 to 8 Mohs rating. For comparison, diamond is rated at 10. Korite has developed its own proprietary techniques to produce the highest-quality gemstone jewelry, and offers an unconditional lifetime guarantee on every piece of ammolite.

Amber Cove is in the heart of the breathtaking Amber Coast in the northern region of the Dominican Republic, and is just five miles from the bustling historic beach town of Puerto Plata. Its name is a nod to the amber that comes from the region’s amber mines, which are among the richest in the world. Touring nearby Puerto Plata also has been very popular with Amber Cove visitors. The historic city was founded as the village of La Isabella in the late 1490s by Christopher Columbus and his brother, Bartolomé, and is the site of Fort San Felipe, the first fort built by European settlers in the New World. Puerto Plata is home to many artist studios, rum and cigar factories, the Amber Museum and the Malecón, a three-mile-long beachfront boardwalk with even more restaurants, bars and shopping. Natural Bridges Aruba has several bridges formed naturally from coral limestone, but one was known above all: the Natural Bridge. Rock Formations Hikers can experience a bit of Stonehenge in the Caribbean thanks to Aruba’s as-yetunexplained rock and boulder formations. Grand Bahama, the most diverse island in the Bahamas, flexes its vacation muscle well beyond the FreeportLucaya resort scene. RECOVERING FROM THE STORM The Bahamas took a severe blow from Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Many of the islands weathered the storm with relatively little damage. But heavy losses were suffered on Grand Bahama, where the port of Freeport is located, and Abaco.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN In the early 19th century, 600 slaves began to build a level road through the limestone ridge that lies between downtown Nassau and the rest of the island to provide better access. When slavery was abolished, so was the project. What was done looked like a long stairway at the dead end of the cut. In the 1920s, a promoter noticed that there were the same number of steps as there were years in Queen Victoria’s reign, and thus the name was bestowed on the stairway. Today beautiful palm trees and an adjacent cascading waterfall make the Queen’s Staircase a shady, cool oasis with a view that takes your breath away. Visitors get a history lesson along with their exercise when ascending the stairs. 106

CAPITAL OF THE BAHAMAS As the seat of government and the hub of commercial activity, Nassau is a lively city — yet one that still retains its Old World (more specifically, British) charm. 108

Traffic in Nassau stays to the left, as in Britain, and is directed by bobbies sporting white jackets, navy pants with red seams, and pith helmets — a tropical version of their London counterparts. A grand 18th-century European mansion is the residence of the governorgeneral, and the neoclassical buildings of Parliament Square serve as a backdrop for a statue of Queen Victoria. Nassau is divided into three main areas: the commercial district, down by the waterfront; the colonial residential area, which features 17th- and 18th-century mansions and large town houses on top of the cliff; and the poorer area ‘‘over the hill.’’ All Nassau’s most interesting sights are within walking distance of each other and are situated around Bay Street, running parallel to the waterfront, just a short walk from the cruise ship dock. Don’t overlook the Bahamas House of Assembly on Parliament Square; the National Historical Museum on Elizabeth Avenue; or the Queen’s Staircase, leading to Fort Fincastle at the top of the cliff. From here, Nassau and its environs are something special to behold.

THE WHISTLE BLOWS Since the first sugarcane was planted in St. Kitts’ fertile soil around 1650, sugar has been the mainstay of the island’s agriculture-based economy. In 1912, the small individually owned estate mills and boiling houses scattered throughout the island were replaced by one large sugar refinery capable of processing the island’s entire crop. During this time, a narrow-gauge railway was built between the pier in Basseterre Bay and a drop-off point about a mile north in order to haul cane and construction material for the new factory. By 1925, the railway had been extended around the island in a single loop, and remains in operation today. In all, the railway covers 40 miles and 26 bridges. The original steam locomotive, Number 8, taken out of service many years ago, still sits in the sugar factory’s yard. During the peak harvest period, the new diesel engines haul over 2,700 tons (900 wagon loads) of cane each day.

Things to do, places to go and what to know to make the most of your visit to St. Thomas. One of the busiest cruise destinations in the world, Charlotte Amalie is a shopper’s delight. Waterfront Highway and Main Street are a maze of side alleys connected by shopping centers, most notably A. H. Riise. Main Street’s buildings are protected as historic structures, making them a cultural delight as well. Even closer to the docks, you will find Havensight Mall, Yacht Haven Grande and Crown Bay, where dozens of stores and boutiques feature goods of every price. St. Thomas’ historic attractions are well-known and much explored: Fort Christian, with its landmark clock tower dating to 1671; the nearby Government House and Legislature Building, with its bright Caribbean-green façade; and the large mahogany altar inside Frederick Lutheran Church. Also worth a visit is Emancipation Garden, which commemorates the island’s end to slavery in 1848. Near the garden is Vendors Plaza, a source of African artwork, handbags and jewelry. You can take it all in at once on the Skyride to Paradise Point, which carries passengers to the top of Flag Hill.

The unique "step streets" of St. Thomas

In the mid-1700s, Charlotte Amalie created a unique way of getting around on the dozens of hills throughout town. Steps were cut into the hills rising from the harbor. What is your design process? I start my concept sketching, gathering images and researching what I want to convey. I have a passion for gems and stones and select these for their organic beauty. There is a poetry in stones which can bring a whole concept to life through their raw power. John Hardy was built on an ethos of collaboration and working alongside my creative community of gemologists, designers and artisans, who provide great influence on my creative process. The collaborative environment brings ideas, creating an outcome of decades of experience and cultural heritage. Tell us about your background. What inspires you? I graduated from Central Saint Martins in London and freelanced at numerous boutique jewelry brands before working at a high jewelry house as the youngest-ever head designer.
