Frédéric Schwebel ably handles his role in the "slot" position within the Breitling Jet Team, the toughest of them all. When performing with no obvious escape route, mistakes are just not an option. Strapped to his wrist is the Chronomat, powered by the ultimate high-performance chronograph movement, Breitling Caliber 01, chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an exceptional "motor" entirely developed and built by Breitling. Bally’s las Vegas
The roadhouse run will continue. American Idol winner Taylor Hicks has signed a year-long extension to perform at Bally’s Las Vegas through 2013. The soul singer, who starred on Broadway as Teen Angel in the hit musical Grease prior to last summer’s inaugural stint on the Strip, tells us he has a bit of Vegas in his blood, and he’s definitely ready “to follow in the footsteps of legends.” Describe your show for us. What can fans expect? The roadhouse hits the Las Vegas Strip. It’s a great combination of country, blues and rockin’ soul. It’s highenergy music at its finest. Tell us about the video elements of the show. I have an introduction from Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert as of now. I don’t know if I can top that. What’s it like to be performing in Las Vegas? As an entertainer, it’s the greatest gig in the world. To be a part of Vegas history is an honor and a blessing. Who did you idolize growing up? Elvis and Ray Charles were the roots of my musical tree. If you could go back in time to old Vegas and see any performer on the Strip, who would it be? I would have to say the Rat Pack. What a great musical combination. But as much as I love the Rat Pack, Elvis would have been my favorite Vegas musician to see perform live.
Taylor Hicks performs in The Indigo at Bally’s Las Vegas.

What Vegas show or comedian makes you laugh? Go get hypnotized by Anthony Cools. If that doesn’t make you laugh, someone needs to check your pulse. If you won a jackpot, what’s the first thing you would do? I would put half in the bank and spend half as fast as I could.

Humphrey Bogart gave us, “Here’s looking at you, kid.” The line, a Casablanca classic, is probably one of the most famous movie quotes of all time. But Alan’s “ Wolf Pack” speech on the roof of Caesars Palace in The Hangover has to be a close second, wouldn’t you say? Alright, neither of those is technically a toast by definition, but they are memorable and isn’t that exactly what a toast should be? All of life’s big occasions—holidays with family, promotions, weddings and birthdays—all call for a toast. Our celebrity toastmasters here show their grace and eloquence. Well, some of them anyway.

Guests can keep things light by digging into his essential, fresh dishes that deliver the full Nobu experience trying items he has perfected, such as his tiraditos (Peruvianstyle ceviche) or his yellowtail topped with slivers of jalapeño. Served with miso soup, fresh pickles and rice, Bento boxes give guests a choice of offerings—from Nobu’s signature miso black cod or panko fried chicken, to premium nigiri and maki sushi. Girl Power! Hip-Hop’s Queen Launches PH Live Neon-colored tutus. Pink hair. Female hip-hop artist. “Super Bass.” If we were on a trivia show and those were the clues, the answer would obviously be Nicki Minaj. The rapper brought her Pink Friday Tour to Las Vegas to christen PH Live at Planet Hollywood— the resort’s renamed 7,000-seat entertainment venue. Minaj, known for her outlandishly colorful costumes and wigs, and her fast-and-furious intense-rhyming style, played to a packed house. The highlight of the night came when Minaj, who was recently called “the most influential female rapper of all time” by The New York Times, paused during Drake’s “Make Me Proud” to encourage the

Jerry Seinfeld has taken his love and appreciation of automobiles to a new level. The Caesars Palace comic, an avid car collector, has created a series of web episodes called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It’s just as it sounds. He drives, picks up a friend, say, Larry David or Alec Baldwin, and they go for coffee to talk, “about nothing.” The unscripted conver-

* THE AUTO COllECTiOnS You haven’t seen this many cars unless you’ve
been in Seinfeld’s Manhattan garage. The Auto Collections at The Quad Resort & Casino has more than 250 historic cars in a 125,000-square-foot showroom. Most of the cars are for sale, including a 1967 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback “Eleanor” driven by Nicolas Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds. An audio tour provides detailed information on some of the cars. autocollections.com
Pollak’s Prize Actor Kevin Pollak outlasted the usual suspects and even eliminated a few good men during his surprisingly deep run in this year’s Main Event at the World Series of Poker, held at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. When asked about knocking out four-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, Pollak replied, “It actually felt horrible. He’s one of my favorite pros to watch. Taking him out was like the first time you beat your dad in the driveway at one-on-one basketball.” Pollak, who recently authored his showbiz success story, How I Slept My Way to the Middle, played for HollywoodPoker.com—a play-forfree poker site where fans compete against celebrities.

The Quad is Coming “Meet me at The Quad.” The expression may evoke memories of those bygone college days, but it’s a phrase soon to be heard in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace is undergoing a complete renovation and is being re-branded as The Quad Resort & Casino. “ This proper ty has always been k nown as a hub of social activity,” explains resort President Rick Mazer. “ The name, The Quad, really embodies those sentiments.” Renovations to the exterior façade, porte cochère, hotel lobby, casino floor, and retail and dining levels are expected to be completed by late 2013.

Manning Up
Sal Jeppi, a.k.a. Sal the Barber, at the Men’s Zone in Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace, has been mak ing men look good for more than three decades. We sat down with the exper t in men’s grooming to learn more about the old-fashioned hot lather and straight-razor shave. So sit back, relax and, well, “don’t worr y ‘bout it;” he’ll do the rest.

Tools of the Trade
Remember the nostalgia of the neighborhood barber shop? Well, the old-fashioned “shave and a haircut” are alive and well, and barbers are still relying on many of the same tools. Some of Sal’s favorites: A stainless-steel Japanese-style Feather Artist Club SS professional folding razor for a close shave, Pinaud’s Clubman Ultra-Fine Talc to whisk away moisture and Virgin Island Bay Rum, an aftershave that instantly cools and refreshes the skin.

“When someone is in our barber shop, he is the king of the barber shop. All the attention is on him.” —Sal the Barber
Five Questions For sal the BarBer
Why should a guy go to a professional barber for a straight-razor shave? Experience. Professionalism. Tradition. A barber knows how to prepare the skin and give the proper shave. This is a unique concept catering toward men. Tell us about Qua’s Men’s Zone? We are old-school Vegas. I have been in the business for over thirty-five years and with Caesars for almost twenty years. This is where I hang my hat. Most resorts have a unisex thing, where a guy gets a cut in a salon. Ours is a real barber shop. We cater to gentlemen. When someone is in our barber shop, he is the king of the barber shop. All the attention is on him. We can mix him a drink, give him a manicure or pedicure, or a gentleman’s facial.
How should a man prepare before coming in? Just come as you are and I’ll take care of you. What do you recommend men do to maintain their skin between visits? Make sure they always moisturize and cleanse the skin before shaving. Preparing the skin is the most important part. I like to use a little facial oil on the skin before I apply shaving cream—it really helps soften whiskers and get a close shave. Never shave against the grain. At home should men use a shaving brush? Absolutely. It brings the whiskers up. The brush is very important even with canned shaving cream. Apply the cream with your hands and then massage it in with the brush. You’ll be amazed at how close of a shave you get.
Manly Spa Treatments Double Down The Four Hand Massage at Paris Spa by Mandara blends five different massage styles: Japanese Shiatsu, Thai, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Swedish and Balinese into a 50-minute session performed by two therapists.
Tops & Tails Melt away stress and settle in for a 50-minute scalp, hand and foot massage at Qua Baths & Spa, Caesars Palace.
DirTy DeTox Release those impurities with a 50-minute seaweed-and-oilmud Detoxifying Wrap at the Spa at Bally’s.

Roman Feast Bacchanal Buffet ServeS Supreme cuiSine
Buffets have long been an integral part of the Las Vegas experience, as embedded into city life as card tables and showgirls. Venues are practically defined by the breadth and depth of these cold and hot displays. Bacchanal Buffet is pushing those limits.
By Jen KaretnicK
The Gods MusT Be huNGRY Overlooking the Garden of the Gods pool oasis, the $17 million Bacchanal Buffet serves more than 500 dishes daily out of nine expertly-led show kitchens. The modern 25,000-square-foot space was designed by the internationally renowned Japanese firm Super Potato.
“The dishes range from the type of comfort-food items that we all come to buffets for, like mouthwatering carved prime rib and a delicious selection of fresh seafood, to many unique offerings.” —Gary Selesner, Caesars Palace regional president

Bountiful Banquet
Bacchanal Buffet Executive Chef Scott Green says it requires a large, dedicated kitchen team and excellent time management to execute 800 “all made from scratch” recipes.
The advent of luxury-focused, chef-driven restaurants—beginning with Wolfgang Puck at The Forum Shops at Caesars in the early ‘90s—forced a bit of a sea change. Buffets were driven back by a tide of à la carte establishments. Buffets were still a Vegas staple, sure, but the city was transforming. Now competitive foodies earn bragging rights by clocking in at the digs of Payard Pâtisserie & Bistro, Restaurant Guy Savoy and Central Michel Richard. Well, epicureans had better learn how to recalibrate their social-media check-ins to buffets. Caesars Palace’s new Bacchanal Buffet offers nine superb show kitchens, each catering to a different theme: Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, American, seafood, pizza, deli and dessert. Thus it’s like dining at nine eateries—all at the same time. Hail Caesar! An intimate, contemporary design Three seating areas build upon each other’s ultramodern lines and borrow natural elements by using recycled materials of glass, reclaimed wood and repurposed steel. The entire buffet seats a total of 600 guests.
12VP C-Taste.indd 31
With more than 500 dishes prepared daily from the open, interactive kitchens—each of which has at least one live cooking area—Bacchanal is volcanic enter tainment of the highest culinary order. “I look at Bacchanal Buffet as nine unique restaurants, and I pay special attention to every detail, just as I would an individual restaurant, all in an effort to deliver our guests’ favorites,” executive chef Scott Green says. “ We are redefining the traditional buffet
experience by focusing on the quality of the ingredients, the presentation and each guest’s overall experience.” The fact that an executive chef of Green’s caliber oversees Bacchanal is proof of high standards being maintained. Green makes sure that the 800 recipes are produced in modest batches and replenished throughout the day. “Providing smaller por tions allows us to constantly keep freshly prepared items out all the time,” he says. “With this quality of food, it doesn’t last long.” Green has a special fondness for the custom Asian soup station, where guests can design bowls of pho, wonton, udon and ramen. He’s also a fan of the charcuterie, where guests can sample hand-sliced, aged meats ranging from prosciutto and mortadella to clothbound cheddar and Maytag blue cheeses, along with sweet and savor y accompaniments. But don’t just take a chef ’s word for it. If you want to pair a red-velvet pancake on the same plate with roasted South Carolina shrimp and grits, or Neapolitan pizza with dim sum, be Bacchanal’s guest. Remember: It’s not just the Bacchanal; it’s your Bacchanalia. Go ahead and claim it.

Philly native Christina Wilson Cooks her Way from Hell’s KitcHen to las vegas “Christina’s passion and talent are undeniable. She is the real deal.” –Chef Gordon Ramsay
Hell’s PARIS LAS VEGAS
Belle
Christina Wilson’s advice for future wannabe Hell’s Kitchen chefs. “Learn to cook scallops, risotto and [beef ] Wellington before you get there, and you’ll be all right.” It’s a good thing the Season 10 winner mastered those parts of the Gordon Ramsay trinity, because she’ll be pushing a lot of those dishes out of the kitchen in her new role as head chef at Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas. Wilson will work under Executive Chef Kevin Hee. Wilson won the job after an intense season that culminated in a final countdown and nerve-racking twist of a door knob, the cooking competition’s final winner-revealing scene. “Let me just say, Chef Ramsay is the slowest counter ever. That one…two… three, for me, lasted like twenty minutes,” she says. And when the door opened? “I was shocked. I remember walking through the door and then stepping back in it. I was like, ‘Wait, did that just happen?’” It did, but she says Hell’s Kitchen was anything but smooth sailing. Wilson admits she was a “little jittery” early on in the “pressure cooker” experience. “I just had to tell myself this is what I do, I’m a chef. I kept my goals short term. I said to myself, ‘All right Chris, you just have to wake up here tomorrow morning. Get through today. There were times I had really great days and I reveled in it when I put my head down on the pillow, but when I woke up I had to let it go. And I had to do the same thing with my bad days.” Wilson also wanted to stay under the radar and remain tight-lipped. She says the best advice she got before going on Hell’s Kitchen came from a close friend who simply told her, “Be careful with your words, you can always add on, but never take away.” Now she’s ready to tackle Las Vegas. Wilson says she loves the sleek, clean lines at her new digs at Gordon Ramsay Steak, but is most excited about the open kitchen concept. “It’s the narcissistic side of me,” she says. “It’s nice to look out and see somebody really enjoying their food the moment they get it.”
Chef Gordon Ramsay interacts with Wilson on Season 10 of Hell’s Kitchen. 32

The Fashion Chakras
What’s your fashion chakra? Chakras (meaning, “wheel of light”) are believed to be the centers of the body from which each person can collect energy. And while balancing your chakras improves your health and well-being, we can say the same about fashion. If you look good, you feel good. Each of our body’s chakras is represented by a color. Here, Vegas Player stylist Christie Moeller delves into the world of color to bring you her top choices for charging each of your fashion chakras.

By chance or By fate, Marc JacoBs Met roBert Duffy. the pair have Been a teaM ever since.
Robert Duffy didn’t just hire Marc Jacobs—he cofounded Marc Jacobs International with him. He even tattooed the year of the founding, 1984, on his wrist. Duffy recently stopped by the new Marc by Marc Jacobs boutique in The Forum Shops at Caesars to give a peek behind the brand. it has been said that the addition of the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection makes Marc Jacobs the biggest american mega-brand to emerge in a long time. I never think of it as that big, because we still do what we did from the beginning. People come in and take pictures of me at an opening and I’m stocking shelves. Even with a hundred stores now, I still want to go and be there and design special merchandise for each location because each one has a different customer. I want to be involved. It’s the DNA of the company. Many famous fashion partnerships have dissolved over time as the brand got bigger. What is the secret to your success? Trust. [Marc] doesn’t want to do this without me and I don’t want to do this without him. Over the years, people have tried to separate us but we always stuck together. With so much on your plate already (louis Vuitton and the Marc Jacobs collection), why start Marc by Marc Jacobs? I was visiting retail stores and the coolest girls would come in and say they love our pieces but couldn’t afford them. I said to Marc: We have to do a secondary line that is more accessible to young customers.
Marc Jacobs was a 20-year-old student at parsons school of Design in new york city when he met robert Duffy, a rising young fashion executive. Jacobs was showing his senior project, and Duffy was in the audience. “he did these sweaters and i loved them so much i got in contact with the dean of parsons and said, ‘ Who is that person? can you give him my number? i would like to hire him.’ and that’s how we met.”
36
you and Marc surround yourselves with young people. is that to stay in touch with trends? Absolutely. As a brand, we were one of the first to grab on to social media. A few seasons ago, a guy tweeted to me that he bought a pair of sunglasses and the lens popped out four days later. I tweeted back and said I bought the same pair and the same thing happened as I walked out of our store. Certain people within our company asked why I would tweet that. I said, ‘It’s the truth. I would be pissed.’ I called all the stores and had the glasses pulled. People appreciate honesty, and we fixed the problem. What trends will we see from Marc by Marc Jacobs this fall? It’s a bit more grown-up. Fewer ruffles and less girly, cleaner lines. The women’s line has a menswear influence. What is the must-have item for fall? A colorful, cheerful leather bag.

Breaking new ground in the luxury jewelr y mark et with materials and designs rooted in motorc ycle culture, King Baby designer and owner Mitchell Binder, who is opening the company ’s flagship boutique in the Appian Way Shops at Caesars, displays his freewheeling rocker spirit in each of his edgy, handcrafted sterling-silver pieces. Binder kick-started his career at age 15 when, as a jeweler’s apprentice, he began creating his own designs and selling them at craft shows. He went on to hone his skills at art school and founded King Baby Studio in 2000. “I was reading about Sigmund Freud and found out that he developed the term ‘king baby’ to describe a mental condition where the patient believes that the world actually revolves around them,” he says. “I found this amusing. Not only could I relate to it, but all my clients seem to have this common characteristic.” Binder references that “independent spirit” throughout his lifestyle brand with creations that include his signature motif: a skull with black diamonds. For his Queen Baby women’s collection, he’s scaled down his skull-and-dagger designs for more feminine symbols, such as roses and crowned hearts. But as he notes, many styles span both collections, appealing to the ever-expanding ‘chosen few.’”

Rock photographer Mark Weiss recently launched the Rock Paper Photo Collection at the John Varvatos boutique in The Forum Shops at Caesars. “John has always been a supporter of both rock ’n’ roll and fine-art photography. Now to know that you can come into the store, pick up some amazing clothes, plus walk away with a photo of Debbie Harry or Guns N’ Roses brings it all together.” A self-taught photographer, Weiss received his first camera at age 14, as payment for mowing a neighbor ’s lawn all summer long. By 18, his work was being published in the rock monthly Circus, and soon he was capturing the most powerful and intimate images of the time, including a portrait of Ozzy Osbourne wearing a pink tutu. “I shoot moments that are off the cuff, timeless,” Weiss explains. “It’s just being there and letting the artist get comfortable with you.”

Shania Twain jumps back in the saddle with a two-year residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Shania Twain is pouring her heart into her new Las Vegas show. “It’s very personalized,” the country crooner explains of her tech-heavy Caesars Palace show, ShanIa: STILL The One. “It follows the course of my own life, my own personality, but with the spine of the show being the songs.”

So, yes, expect Twain to sing her chart-topping songs, “ That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “Any Man of Mine,” among others, when she steps onstage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Twain did not write any new songs for the 90-minute show, but as one of the top-selling country-music artists of all time, with eight No. 1 hits, she has plenty in her upbeat oeuvre to choose from. “Each song has taken me through different stages of my career and given me a ver y diverse place to work from with this show,” Twain says. “I have songs with more traditional country aspects and then I’ve got [songs] with more of a rock edge. [ The show] has the songs that everybody is going to expect to hear.”
One Woman’s Journey
While Shania was out of the spotlight for several years—due in large part to her battle to overcome the vocal condition dysphonia, coupled with a well-publicized scandal in her divorce from husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange—her return has been strong and quite personal. She writes about it in her memoir, From This Moment On; it also comes up in a docu-series on OWN (the Oprah Winfrey Network), Why Not? with Shania Twain. Her first official foray back into the music biz, however, came at the request of Lionel Richie, who asked the songstress to collaborate with him on “Endless Love” for his album, Tuskegee. The performance was a countrified remake of Richie’s famous duet with Diana Ross, and helped Twain gain back her confidence. “I was so nervous about that,” Twain admits. “I hadn’t recorded in a long time. The pressure of taking on a challenge like that was just a bit over whelming for me. I was probably in an internal meltdown until I got to the point where we were already into it and it was too late to back down. I stepped out of my comfort zone and forced myself to do things that were scary, but that I knew were productive. The whole journey was really just to find my voice again.” Twain convinced Richie to record “Endless Love” at her home in the Bahamas, where she was rehearsing for SHANIA: STILL THE ONE. Clearly, the Bahamas is a comforting destination for the Canadian, who once hailed from the wilds of nor thern Ontario. In fact, she says she will be “commuting” between the Bahamas and Las Vegas for the foreseeable future. Her new husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, and her son, Eja, 11, will periodically join her in Vegas, but Twain says Eja will remain in school in the Bahamas.
Twain, who has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide, is the top-selling female country artist of all time.
“My vision is to bring the atmosphere of each song alive and share the journey of my life and career with the audience.” 76

in, oration.
“I want to make sure that my son has stability,” Twain says. “When I decided to go back and dedicate myself to work again, I didn’t want to compromise his life and turn him into a road kid. We are able to balance our personal and professional life without much disruption. Vegas is ideal for me at this time in my life because I’m not on the road and traveling every night. So, I’m going from vacation to vacation through this whole process—enjoying the beaches and then going to Vegas and enjoying all the excitement there.”
Sensory Overload When Twain received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011, her husband Frédéric Thiébaud was by her side at the ceremony.
“Vegas is ideal for me at this time in my life because I’m not on the road and traveling every night.”
Shania Kids Can In her memoir, From This Moment On, Shania Twain recounts her difficult childhood—sharing her experiences of growing up poor in an abusive household. The singer, who says she feels “lucky” to have escaped, doesn’t want today’s underprivileged children to rely on luck. That’s why she started Shania Kids Can—a charitable program designed to build a better future for disadvantaged youth. Shania Kids Can helps educators identify children who are having personal problems at home and provide them with a safe, productive, confidence-building environment so they can reach their full potential at school. “I can personally relate to the effects of growing up with difficulties at home and understand the problems kids can face while trying to fit in with the other students who are not experiencing the same disadvantages in their personal lives,” Twain explains. “My reason for creating this program is to ensure that underprivileged children in our communities are provided and cared for during their time at school, to help prevent them from falling through the cracks. I feel luck saved me from falling through the cracks as a child and believe it’s neither wise, nor fair, to leave the destiny of any child to luck.”
Twain is excited about her Vegas residency and is relieved that she won’t have to worry too much about the dreaded “deser t throat.” She can thank fellow Canadian Céline Dion, who had the theater outfitted with special technology that adds humidity to the air, easing the effects that the dry desert air can have on a singer’s voice. “ The Colosseum is ideal for vocalists, and I’m going to take advantage of that,” Twain says, adding, “All of the senses are going to be stimulated in this show. So not just sight and sound, but feel and smell. You’re going to be immersed into the environment, and not just what you would normally experience at a concert. Musically, I’ve had a lot of fun too. The band is double the size. I have dancers, which is adding a new energy that I’ve never experimented with before in regard to choreography. I’m creating a show that is more cinematic in a sense, because I don’t want to fight the amazing environment of The Colosseum. It’s going to be a real ride.” Twain is making these concert dreams come true with the help of AEG Live and director Raj Kapoor. It’s a gigantic production, which contrasts greatly from her days on the road. “When you have a mobile production, you’re limited as to what you can bring with you and what you can set up and tear down every day, day after day, month after month.” She continues, “My first step in creating the show was writing out the song list, building my ideas from there. I wanted to keep the hits at the heart of it all while weaving elements of surprise throughout the experience. My vision is to bring the atmosphere of each song alive and share the journey of my life and career with the audience from a unique perspective.”

Classic Cocktails
Bartenders are put ting their own t wists on the season, packing some punch with creative takes on classic cocktails.
Cocktails are serious business in Las Vegas, especially in the cooler months when it becomes more pleasant to indulge in heartier liquors such as cognac and Campari and flavors such as basil and apple. Here are five cocktails that will certainly shake up your seasonal drinking regimen.

A proper cocktail should be a kick in the head, and this Martorano’s cocktail pays homage to the very man who made that proclamation (though he was referring to love, of course). The Dean Martin is a refreshing concoction of citrus vodka, simple syrup and soda, brightened with muddled strawberries and fresh basil. Your head may be spinning after a few of these, but you’ll definitely go to bed grinning.
One of the most creative presentations, the Southside is also one of the easiest cocktails to drink. Plymouth Gin and Perrier Jouët are mixed and poured over fresh limes muddled with mint and agave nectar, and served with the julep strainer atop the glass. The resulting beverage is crisp, aromatic, verdant and bubbly. The correct technique is to sip the drink through the strainer: This method was developed before the advent of straws, so those with sensitive teeth would not have to encounter direct contact with ice.

THE NEGRONI Old HOmestead steakHOuse, C a e s a r s Pa l aC e
The Negroni has enjoyed a recent resurgence in the modern cocktail lexicon, thanks to mixologists embracing its smooth, yet bitter, qualities. Best served as an apéritif, the classic cocktail is made with gin, herbaceous Campari and sweet vermouth, and served with an orange wedge. It’s a drink that definitely stirs up an appetite, and can stand up to a great steak.

CARAMEL APPLE MARTINI Center Cut steakHOuse, FlamingO las Vegas
On the sweeter side of this cocktail tour, the caramel-apple martini evokes the best of fall flavors. Grey Goose vodka is enhanced with apple Pucker, butterscotch Schnapps, Sierra Mist soda, and garnished with apple and caramel drizzle. The resulting drink is mild and crisp with a mellow, sweet finish at the end.
RAISING THE BAR Let’s face it, mixologists rule the night. And here in Vegas, not just any cocktail will do. It’s about being innovative and unique—going next-level. Lucky for us, the bartenders at these top spots are serving up some cheer worth getting excited about.
THE MODERN CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL s e a H O r s e lO u n g e , C a e s a r s Pa l aC e
The champagne cocktail is alive and well at Seahorse Lounge, a great people-watching spot on the casino floor near the front entrance of Caesars Palace. This cocktail is made with so much more than just bubbly. Meant to dazzle, the golden, effervescent drink is served in a clear wine goblet with fresh-cut fruit, and made with top-shelf spirits such as Hennessy Privilege, Grand Marnier and crisp Moët & Chandon Impérial over ice. The Magician WINS HOTEL & CASINO
RIO ALL-SUITE
$18,346,673 In case you’re wondering: Yes, the BIG ONE’s $18.3 million prize was indeed the largest ever awarded in sports history. by Matt Villano
Antonio Esfandiari won the BIG ONE for ONE DROP tournament at this year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) event at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and netted the biggest prize in tournament poker history ($18.3 million). But the 33-year-old poker pro almost didn’t even play. “Originally, I didn’t want to pony up the $1 million buy-in and was scheduled to do commentary on the event for ESPN,” he recounted in an interview days after the event. “That’s when it hit me: How could I sit in the booth and comment on the greatest tournament ever and not at least give myself a chance to be at the final table?” It turned out to be a wise decision. Looking back, Esfandiari described those moments after beating Sam Trickett for the title as surreal: “The last card came out and I thought, ‘Holy crap.’ From that point on, I felt like I was on some sort of drug—just very, very high.” While the win made the man they call “The Magician” one of the richest men in poker, he says the money is secondary to the thrill of beating the most talented field of competitors in the history of the WSOP. “I can now say I won the greatest tournament of all time,” he mused. “It’s hard to top that.”
ONE DROP is a non-profit organization founded in Montréal, Canada, by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté. The foundation’s aim is to fight poverty by providing access to clean water in communities around the world.

The show musT go on. And for magicians Penn & Teller, it’s been moving along for 20 years in Las Vegas. But the age-old adage recently took on its true meaning when a lightning storm temporarily threw the Penn & Teller Theater into total darkness. Unfazed, Penn Jillette—the larger, louder half of the dynamic duo—took over. “We lit some candles, I beefed up my voice, and we did material in the dark,” Penn explains. Consummate professionals, Penn & Teller have been per forming together since the late 1970s. They played their first Vegas show at Bally’s on January 14, 1993, and have been a resident act here since, spending the last 12 years at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. “ The joke’s always been you go to Vegas to die,” Penn says. “Hopefully, we’ll die in the office here, not soon though. But when it’s all over, I want to die at the Rio.”

Controlled Chaos Jeff Civillico is a juggler. (But don’t call him one.)
Jeff Civillico is Harvard educated. Well, sort of. You see, the “Comedy in Action” star got hooked on his craft while on a family trip to Boston when he was still in grade school. It was there in Harvard Square that Civillico was picked to be a volunteer by a street performer. The experience made him want to become an entertainer. “I loved the rush of being in front of a big crowd,” Civillico recalls. “When we got home my parents bought me a book on juggling and I taught myself.” Now he jokes, “I don’t even like juggling. I like making people laugh, and juggling is just the medium.”

RE S ORT & C AS I NO
“I learned the Disney way: visuals for the kids and verbal for the adults. I’m rubbery, really silly, so the kids are laughing, but the jokes are going way over their heads.”
Civillico’s all-ages, hour-long afternoon show at The Quad Resort & Casino is high-energy, physical comedy. It’s more than juggling bowling balls and plungers or escaping from a straitjacket while riding a unicycle, it’s interactive improv— vaudeville-style.
