Dear friends,

For so many people, 2022 felt like a collective exhale. After two years of a public health crisis, which had a profound impact on our community’s economy, it seemed the tension began to ease, and life in our idyllic valley sputtered back to something we could recognize. The manic crush of visitors in our community subsided, kids went back to school and activities, and we gathered again to be entertained and enriched.

In my role at One22 Resource Center, I am often charged with the unenviable task of bringing a dose of realism, and this annual report can be seen as a reality check. After a time of historic crisis, the backbone of our workforce—low to moderate income workers and their families—continue to face ongoing crises, hardship, and uncertainty. At One22 we serve a community that works and lives here, but finds it more difficult than ever to make ends meet. Thanks to you, it’s what we’ve always done: before, during, and now after the pandemic. That’s what we’re here for.

Many of you know that we began 2022 with a flood in our food pantry. Our team’s and partners’ response to this catastrophe was both a heroic effort in real-time, and symbolic of the grit and resourcefulness in our approach to everything we do. Within 60 days of the flood the Jackson Cupboard was up and running in a sustainable and scalable new model. And simultaneously another branch of our team launched financial education initiatives on schedule.

One22’s financial education work is focused on helping folks take control of the money they have - no matter how little. Those conversations begin by taking a look at a basic budget and cash flow. We’re doing the same with our organization, set in a new landscape of increased and sustained need among the population we serve.

At One22 we know what we’re here for. And, we set our goals to meet the demands of our community. Our mission to offer basic needs like food and rent assistance, in addition to a path toward empowerment, has not receded. We’re working to help people transform their crises rather than suffer from them. With gratitude for your support, we continue to rely on friends like you in order to build on this strong track record, and to do our part to keep our community whole.

We have all seen a significant increase in the costs of housing, groceries, transportation, and more. As a result, many people are struggling to make ends meet in the county with the greatest income gap in the United States*, particularly those who are already living paycheck to paycheck. Even as many businesses strive to increase wages, take-home pay fails to keep pace with the rising costs of living in

Teton County. More people are turning to One22 for assistance, some for the first time.

On the revenue side, non-recurring pandemicrelated funding like CARES and ARPA, which was provided during the pandemic to organizations like One22 to help support basic needs, has ceased or is winding down as the public health crisis recedes.

ongoing need for financial assistance in our community is abundantly evident. There is increased need due to loss of work, injury and illness, the rising cost of rent, inflation, and unforeseen circumstances. One22 provided households with support up to three times a year, offering comprehensive help from our client services team—budgeting, advanced planning, and connecting to additional resources. The first/ last/deposit program tackled upfront costs, aiding families in finding stable housing, but demand for financial assistance persists for the hardworking families we serve. Fulfilling the current demand for assistance will require a collaborative community effort.

Anna is a young professional working for a local nonprofit. Last year, after coming up short finding housing, she moved into a house in Teton Valley, Idaho with 12 other people. Her living situation was taking a toll and affecting her mental health. Anna was on the search for a better living situation, and finally found housing in Jackson. Unfortunately, because Anna had just made a first/last/deposit payment on the house in Idaho, she didn’t have the money to make the move. She came to One22 and received assistance with the first/last/deposit payment. 273 19

Jackson Cupboard

Circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. The flooding of our Jackson Cupboard space on North Glenwood in January 2022 showed us that. The program was displaced from that location indefinitely, which is a feeling that the families we serve know all too well. Our team quickly jumped into action to offer assistance, providing grocery gift cards and an amplified presence at the Jackson/Teton County Recreation Center satellite cupboard. The program began operating using a curbside format, through which shoppers place advanced, online orders. The flood at our program reminds us how we all are susceptible to unexpected circumstances.

Alina used the Food Cupboard during her time in college. She decided to enroll full time for her second semester in school, and with the loss of her income due to tuition and time, she needed to stretch her budget. The Jackson Cupboard’s no-cost grocery program, as well as their resources for low or no-cost, local, nutritious food, had an incredible impact. Alina was able to spend less time worrying about how she would pay for food, and more time focusing on bettering herself through academics.

She decided to work for One22 after graduating because she’s passionate about the programs. “One22 truly is a resource hub, and even when we don’t offer a specific service, we help connect them to the right folks to provide them with care and support they need.”

Language Access & Immigrant Services

One22 helps immigrants adjust to life in Teton County and promotes self-reliance, education and employment through services including taxpayer assistance, housing, translation of vital records, consular visits, legal access, and more. Additionally, we’ve provided direct interpretation in health and human service settings. In 2022, noting a steadily rising need among a range of organizations in a growing number of languages, One22 increased focus on our role in providing language access. By hosting interpreter training to bilingual community members of any language, we aim to grow our community’s capacity, as well as the skills and resumes of those who want to start, enhance, or professionalize their role as interpreters.

For years, Celia served as an unofficial interpreter, bridging the language divide for friends and family. Last October, Celia embarked on a life-changing path by enrolling in The Community Interpreter training program offered by One22. Celia soon realized that interpretation was more than a hobby—it was a career opportunity with purpose. She reached out to fellow interpreters in the community and joined the interpreter list for the Teton County School District. Celia began interpreting math curriculum for elementary school parents with compassionate guidance, opening the door for understanding, ensuring that every parent’s questions were answered and that the curriculum was fully comprehended. This experience created a bridge built with empathy and knowledge.

One22 aims to empower individuals like Celia to be catalysts for change. Together, we can break down language barriers, nurturing a community where every voice is heard, understood, and celebrated.

One22 assisted Spanish speakers in filing 81 tax returns filed through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA program).

Financial Empowerment

Financial education is a transformative component to community success. One22 assisted 40 individuals in completing a financial empowerment program, gaining essential skills in budgeting, credit, debt management, and savings. Partnering with the Mission Asset Fund allowed the facilitation of two impactful lending circles in 2022. These lending circles allow participants to join a group to set savings goals, build credit and learn together. To align with the goal of increased financial well-being in our community, our financial empowerment series will expand in 2023, aiming to help guide even more participants toward self-sufficiency through financial education that is relevant, and actionable.

40 households completed a virtual financial empowerment series in April 2022.

80% of participants reported feeling more confident about managing their finances upon program completion.

Shelley is a single mom with stable, affordable housing, and a full time job with benefits. In order to maintain that stability Shelley needs afterschool and summer care for her elementary-aged son. One22 helped her enroll him in programs with assistance from their youth activity scholarship program. By applying early, Shelley secured four weeks of camp for her son and had more time to save for her portion of the costs. However, she struggled to come up with the remaining portion as she had a tight budget. One22’s financial empowerment series, which focused on budgeting, savings, credit and debt, and managing expenses, gave her confidence in managing her finances and created a connection with their staff for future support- knowing she can talk to staff at One22 not only about support like scholarships, but also the often intimidating topic of personal finances.

Youth Activity Scholarships

Finances should not be a barrier to providing equal opportunities for children. From art classes to soccer and music lessons, scholarship programs open doors for countless children to have experiences that families could not afford otherwise. With major funding from the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, we collaborated with over 30 organizations, enabling students in our community to participate in a diverse range of enriching activities. This cooperative approach has a sliding scale for families, and typically involves a three-way split of the costs between family, the partner organization, and the scholarship fund. In most cases, the family’s costs are reduced to one-third the regular fee. By significantly reducing the financial burden, over 200 children had access to extracurricular activities and summer camps in 2022.

Lily and John have 7 kids, and one daughter is 6 years old with chronic lung and spinal issues. All of their extra money goes to medical care for their daughter, so the food resources, scholarships, and no-cost groceries provided by One22 make an incredible impact.

From Lily’s perspective, “It’s really wonderful to know that the One22 youth activity scholarships can help provide opportunities for my kids. They don’t have to let go of their hopes and dreams – I know that they can try new sports, arts, and music.”

They have never been able to put any of their kids in camp, and one of their kids got to go last year. They didn’t even know that so many possibilities were available until they went to One22.

2022 By The Numbers

In 2020 and 2021, because of a long history of service, One22 was a primary vehicle for many donors who were intent on providing relief to folks dealing with the fallout of the pandemic and the resulting economic upheaval. Generous philanthropic support allowed us to meet an outsized challenge to get food, rent, and other emergency assistance in the hands of those who needed it.

Based on donor intent, the board of directors created designated funds from surplus revenue in 2020 and 2021 for the food access program and for financial assistance; these funds are intended to support the ongoing needs of community members as economic challenges continue. At the end of 2021 the fund balance was $1,585,000.

In 2022, a decline in revenue amidst this continued need prompted us to spend down those surplus funds as seen in the revenue and expense charts here. As of December 31, 2022 the designated fund balance was $614,000.
