So much has happened since our 42nd beer festival three years ago, not the least of which our saying goodbye to a number of our CAMRA members and key festival volunteers including the branch’s former Chairman Dave “Burt” Murray. It will be odd not seeing him at this year’s festival adorned in a CAMRA festival polo shirt, radio in one hand beer tokens for the volunteer staff in the other, all the time moaning about this not going right, that volunteer going AWOL and never a site officer around when the toilets have got blocked for the umpteenth time that day.
Regular Peterborough Festival goers will notice many changes this year… most noticeable their being only two main tents. Honest folks this is not our fault, since the pandemic prices have gone up and our sponsors National CAMRA are rightly being cautious in approving festival budgets, especially for one as big and expensive to hold as Peterborough. However, the Bar Marquee will be the longest marquee we have ever on the embankment with a bar length of around 100 metres.
Enough about the branch & CAMRA, you are all at the beer festival to enjoy yourselves, sampling the many real ales, ciders, perrys, continental wines, flavoured gins whilst lazing in the sun, playing games, riding on the fun fair or taking in our great selection of bands. I personally am looking forward to meeting the trade on the Tuesday afternoon and seeing all of those people you only see at the festival year after year. As mentioned above this festival, and CAMRA branch, is run by volunteers who give up their time to create and staff the festival, undertaking a variety of jobs from ordering the beers, to setting up fences and of course serving. They receive no pay whatsoever; instead our volunteers are rewarded with free beer, a subsidised canteen and tent space if required. If you would like to learn more, just ask at the staffing desk next to glasses.... please!!

W e are fortunate once again to have a visit from a Master Cooper, Jonathan Manby this year. Jonathan started as an apprentice cooper at Theakston brewery Masham in June 1995 under Clive Hollis (Master Cooper). He went on to qualify as a journeyman cooper in June 1999 being the last brewery cooper to qualify in that century. He then became a Master Cooper himself in 2020 after training Euan Findlay. He has since left Theakston’s for the next chapter in his cooperage career and joined forces with fellow masters coopers Alastair Simms and David Poulter at Jensen’s Cooperage, the only independent cooperage in England working on all forms of cooperage ( beer cask, spirit cask, wine cask, cider cask, vat work and everything in between).

As always we have a wide range of traditionally made ciders and perries from all over the country, quite a few of them new to the Festival this time, but because of the popularity of cider containing fruit and other flavourings we also have a good selection of these. You will therefore find on the bar strawberry, pineapple, blackberry and other fruit ciders, also rhubarb, even rum & raisin and sloe gin. You will note that most of the fruit ciders are 4% ABV, considerably weaker than most of the non-fruit ciders. The majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the tubs and boxes. Because of the nature of the fermentation process real ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not so opaque as to make them look unappealing in the glass. We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. These are 100% juice and very refreshing. Our knowledgeable bar staff will be very happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy. The tub labels are the best source of information when ordering since, unlike the program, they are only printed after the cider has been tasted. Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet. Bear in mind that on our categorization most commercial ciders would be medium sweet and a lot of fruit ciders sweet or very sweet! You may not always agree with us, particularly since some tubs can change in character as they are drunk, but it shouldn’t be too far off. We are confident that whatever your taste in cider / perry there is something for you here. Wassail! Chris Rogers Cider Bar Manager
