PIG’S EAR BEER FESTIVAL

On behalf of the East London and City(ELAC) branch ofthe Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), I am delighted to welcome you to the Round Chapel. We give thanks to the Trustees and team at the Round Chapel(special thanksgotoPhilip Lloyd and Patrick Hamill)for allowing us to use this wonderful building onceagain.

Following the success of last year’s event, we have the decision to run the festival at 75% of its previous levels to allow more room for everyone. Despite this, we are very pleased to offer around 175 cask ales, as well as numerous foreign beers andciders.

Despite the reduction in casks this year, it is still not possible to fit allof them onto the racking at once. For those of you with a season ticket, lookoutfor changes as the week progresses.A live online list is available at pigs.realaledb. com and will be updated as often aspossible.

All beer is sorted alphabetically, and you canfind the beginning of the alphabet on your right by the Glasses stand. Our expert team work hard to bring us the best of British, with notable specialsand beers appearing in cask for the first time, using their master selectionskills.

For apple aficionados, the cider andperrybartakes a prominent role opposite the beer bar. The overseasbar team haveasoughtafter selectionofdraughtand bottles, and alsohavea limited range of wine and softdrinks.

TRIBUTES TO FORMER VOLUNTEERS

BERNARDBOORMAN

We heard the very sad news during May of the death of former Pig’s Ear festival organiser, Bernard Boorman. Bernard was festival organiser from 1994 to 2000 when it was held at Stratford Old Town Hall. One of the highlights of Bernard’s reign was the hugely popular 1997 festival known best for its ‘Spice Pigs’ design. There was a lot of opposition within the local branch to the design being used as people felt that it potentially opened the festival up to legal challenges relating to copyright. Bernard held firm, the design was used, the festival was a resounding success and anything and everything using that now well-known design positively flew out of the door, with glasses changing hands on the festival floor for ludicrous sums ofmoney!

Bernard was always determined that the festival should be about beer and cider above all else – and so insisted that what he saw as ‘distractions’ like live music should be avoided. Bernard always loved visiting Pig’s each year even after he ceased to be involved in any way – he was extremely sad not to be able to make it along last year. Bernard will be sadly missed but we salute his achievements as festivalorganiser.

GEORGEINGLEBY

We received the very sad news of ELAC stalwart George Ingleby’s passing during last year’s Pig’s Ear. George was a regular volunteer at the festival and would take the photographs of the official opening of the festival. He was a lovely man and a pleasure to bewith.

JAMESGRAYSON

ELAC member and regular Pig’s Ear volunteer James Grayson passed away during February. To quote Keen Massey, who sources the beer for Pig’s Ear: ‘he was a hard worker at many of our festivals. May he rest inpeace.’

MICK O’RORKE

ELAC member and former festival volunteer Mick O’Rorke sadly died following a cycling accident during September. A stalwart local pub campaigner who will be greatly missed by ELACbranch.

ROGERSUTTON

South East London member Roger Sutton sadly died in May. Roger worked for many years on the bars at Pig’s Ear. He was a very likeable person with a great knowledge of most things in life. He will be a big loss to thefestival.

ALANMCDONALD

West Middlesex member Alan died shortly before Christmas last year. Alan worked on the glasses stands at the festival for many years and will be sadlymissed.

JONATHANKEMP

We were saddened to hear a few weeks ago of the passing of Jonathan Kemp. Jonathan was an invaluable member of CAMRA’s National Executive and was confirmed in his second term in office in April this year. Alongside his commitment to CAMRA at a national level, he was a well-known presence at events across the country, volunteering at CAMRA festivals at every level, from local branch events such as Pig’s Ear to the Great British Beer Festival.

DRAUGHT BEER

As always, our beer gurus have hunted across the length and breadth of Britain to find beers you may have never had before, some possibly even from breweries you’ve never tried before. Several of our local East London breweries have once again supplied us with special one-off beers for the festival, including some who don’t normally produce cask beer atall. To help you decide, we have a colour codingscheme and the breweries’ descriptions of their beers.Weaim to give you the widest choice byhaving justone cask of
