WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE

35TH PIGS EAR BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL

C

harge your glasses! Once again we gather in the magnificent surroundings of Hackney’s Round Chapel for a 35th celebration of beer and cider with the East London and City branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). 9 years ago, we first crossed the threshold into this hallowed hall and we give continued thanks to the Trustees and team at the Round Chapel (special thanks go to Philip Lloyd, Laurie Elks & Patrick Hamill).

IT IS ALE-MENTARY MY DEAR WATSON… All our cask beers are sorted alphabetically by brewery, then by beer name; not all 230 casks will fit onto the racking at once, so look for changes as the week progresses. You can find the beginning of the alphabet on your right as you enter the hall. Our masters of selection continue to strive for new and exciting brews, with another superb selection of ale from across the country. Keen, John and Peter work hard to bring us the best of British, with notable specials and beers appearing in cask for the first time. For apple-heads, Mick Lewis’s cider and perry bar takes a prominent role in the centre of the room. Gazing towards distant shores, Adam Miller and the foreign bar team have a curious craft selection of draught and bottles, including an iconic Caramel Fudge Stout in keg from Kees Brewery in the Netherlands! If that doesn’t take your fancy, they also have a limited range of wine and soft drinks. Expanding this year is our small “KeyKeg” bar, this can be found on your left as you enter the main hall. If you haven’t heard of this dispense mechanism before, a KeyKeg is a single-use plastic container, inside which is a bag that contains the beer. The beer is served by applying air pressure to

the outside of the bag which squeezes it and forces the beer to the tap. Unlike a keg, no gas is added to the beer during the process of serving. We have created this bar to feature beers from smaller breweries within London, as many now use these containers as their sole method of distribution.

FREE YOUR ARMS… Our cloakroom is inside the festival hall, opposite the food vendors. Depositing your coats and bags there will help ease crowding inside the hall, meaning you can get to the bar faster, bags and coats won’t block your passage!

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS, SUPPLIERS AND SUPPORTERS Our thanks and appreciation go to all our sponsors and supporters. Brentwood Brewery, One Mile End Brewery, Five Points Brewing Co, JD Wetherspoon and Windsor & Eton Brewery have provided vital backing, their collaboration helps make this event viable. We also thank The Eleanor Arms, The White Hart and Ye Olde Rose & Crown for their support in providing meeting venues and storage throughout the year. Our warm thanks go to Mayor Philip Glanville for his support in our community event, and to Speaker Councillor Clare Potter; both have made time in their busy schedules to open the festival. Further thanks go to Councillor Vincent Stops who always manages to help us organise the Festival on top of his extensive official duties. Our main suppliers Avalon Wholesale, 6 Barrels and Great Heck Brewery, provide a superb service, as do all the breweries that have supplied direct and are too numerous to individually name - thank you for all your work

WELCOME and for the Festival specials you produce for us. We also acknowledge the special efforts of East London Brewing Company and Redemption Brewery without whose help this event would be so much more difficult. Finally, I would like to add my personal thanks to the festival organising team who work wonders behind the scenes. These are the people who deserve the most credit for all their dedication and hard work, I am extremely grateful to: - Steve Hall, Steve Richardson, John Pardoe, Andy Kinch, Keen Massey, Peter Gordon, Fletch, Mick Lewis, Nick Cornish, Adam Miller, Dave Gilchrist, Bill Bremner, Pete Giles, Hugh Smith, Frankie Colclough, Alexandra Hyde, Peter Needle, Kim Butler, Jamie Segust, Derek Jones and Nigel Tarn. If I have forgotten anyone please accept my sincere apologies, your contribution is no less appreciated. If you have enjoyed the festival and would like to help us organise future events, please do get in contact via elacbranch@mail.com – there’s always a lot to do!

BEER AND CIDER OF THE FESTIVAL

VOLUNTEERS Everyone who works at this event is an unpaid volunteer. Do ask for their advice about the beers you want to try, but during busy periods please be patient as they are not professional bar staff. Help us to help you by being honest as to who is next to be served. We need new volunteers to help with the planning and setting up of future festivals. You will need to be a CAMRA member and by joining our happy band, whilst working at the festival you receive free beer (within reason), subsidised food, and during the year a staff party/outing (to the brewery that wins beer of the festival). You can also join in our various branch outings and pub crawls. REMEMBER – Without volunteers there may not be a festival to attend in future. Please DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. There is a good public transport system in Hackney, and you can enjoy a few drinks and arrive home safely.

FINALLY…

You can take part in voting for the Beer and Cider of the Festival and provide us with valuable feedback. The voting form can be picked up from any of the bars and is something both we and the brewers take very seriously, as it comes from our customers – YOU! Please return your voting form to the front desk on your way home.

FROM ALL OF US AT THE PIGS EAR BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and all your families. We hope you have enjoyed our festival. We plan to come together for a special celebration of ale in 2019 – watch this space! X ALAN PERRYMAN FESTIVAL ORGANISER

BEERCARDS The Pig’s Ear Beer and Cider Festival is using Beercards again this year, so please note that most of the bars will not be taking cash. You must have a Beercard to buy drinks from the two UK Draught Beer Bars and Cider Bar. We like to keep things simple and recommend you start with a £10 starter pack which includes your glass and a £7 beer token card. To pay for drinks, simply hand over your Beercard and the volunteer who serves you will cross off the appropriate amount. 4

At the end of your visit to the festival, either keep your glass or exchange it for the £3 returnable deposit at the Glasses counter. Additional Beercards cost £10 and can be purchased at Glasses, Bottled and Foreign Beer bars, Products and Games. We accept credit/debit cards at these locations. Any credit you do not spend can be donated to the Speaker’s Charities in the boxes provided, or can be refunded at any cash till. Refunds on glasses are only available at the Glasses counter.

The Foreign Beer Bar and Bottled Beer bar will be accepting cash payment, or you can use your Beercard if you prefer. When you come to your final drink, if you do not have enough credit left on your Beercard, you may pay the difference in change over all bars. Beer Cards are valid all sessions but PLEASE treat your Beer Card as cash – we cannot replace lost cards any more than lost fivers! Don’t leave your glass or Beer Cards unattended on the bar.

THE ROUND CHAPEL

THE

ROUND CHAPEL T

he origins of the Clapton Park United Reform Church, or Round Chapel, began at the nearby Old Gravel Pit Chapel in Morning Lane. This was established in 1804 by a breakaway group from The Ram’s Chapel in Homerton. The Old Gravel Pit community was congregationalist and as Hackney’s population grew so did the size of their chapel community. By the mid 1860’s with the congregation still expanding, their chapel in poor condition and the lease running out, it was clear that a new larger building was needed. It was decided to raise the funds by subscription and build it as a new development in the leafy suburbs of the Clapton Park Estate. In 1869 Henry Fuller was appointed as architect. He was well known for designing 10

non-conformist church architecture and had already designed three other local chapels. The building contract was awarded to Perry & Co for £10,290 – though the final cost was £21,294 – a very large sum at the time. The first service was held at the new chapel on 26th April 1871. Most non-conformist chapels were like Anglican churches with aisles facing forward towards the pulpit. The Round Chapel was highly unusual for the time, designed more like a theatre, able to hold a large congregation, and where all attending could see and hear the preacher. This was important as there is an emphasis on the sermon in non-conformism. It was neither Gothic nor classical in design and used Iron in its construction, also unusual at the time.

THE THIRTY FIFTH PIGS EAR BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL

THE ROUND CHAPEL The Chapel was built with ancillary rooms to the rear and a verger’s house in Glenarm Road. By 1873 there was insufficient space, so a school and lecture rooms were added, built in the same style, on the Powerscroft Road side of the site. This block was set at right angles to the Chapel. In 1881 another wing was added. From the 1890’s onwards the size of the congregation decreased as Hackney’s population changed and local people moved out to the suburbs. This pattern continued throughout the twentieth century, and by the 1980’s the congregation could no longer afford the upkeep of the building. The main Chapel closed, although the United Reform Church continued worshiping in the school buildings where they remain to this day.

The Round Chapel was transferred to the Hackney Historical Building Trust and, with support and funds from English Heritage and Heart of Hackney, restoration work was carried out to reopen the building and give it a viable future. The church cottage was also bought by the trust and they operate both buildings today. The schoolrooms remain the property of the United Reform Church. The architectural importance of the building has been recognised by its Grade II* listing, with special mention of the Chapel’s interior. This grading puts it in the top 4% of listed buildings in the country. It was also included on the Government list of outstanding non-conformist churches, along with two others in Hackney, the Agapemonite Church, and the Unitarian Chapel in Newington Green. X

BEER STYLE & SUBSTANCE

BEER STYLE & SUBSTANCE W

ith well over 7,500 different real ales available in the UK, from more than 1,750 breweries, real ale is a very diverse product. There is a beer out there to suit everyone’s palate. Here is a quick guide to some different beer styles.

GOLDEN ALES Pale amber, gold, yellow or straw-coloured; golden ales are hoppy beers with a refreshing taste. They may have some malt or fruit flavour but any diacetyl (a butterscotch flavour) should be minimal.

PALE ALE AND IPA BITTER Bitters developed towards the end of the 19th century as beers that could be served after only a few days storage in the pub cellar. Bitters were a successor to pale ale and were usually deep bronze to copper in colour due to the use of slightly darker crystal malts. These are highly hopped ales, ranging from 3% ABV to around 5% or more ABV (ABV means alcohol by volume). Best Bitters and Premium Bitters tend to have higher alcohol content.

MILD An ale of low gravity and hop rate, hence rounder and distinctly less bitter on the palate and in aroma than more highly hopped bitters. Mild is usually (but not always) darker in colour than bitter, through use of a higher roast malt or caramel. There are considerable variations in mild styles.

PORTER & STOUT Porter is a dark, slightly sweeter but ‘hoppy’ ale, made with roasted barley. It was the successor of ‘entire’ and the predecessor of stout. Originated in London around 1730, by the end of the 18th century it was the most popular beer in England. The fashion for the pale ales of Burton-upon-Trent ended the popularity of Porter in the mid 19th century. In recent years many brewers have revived Porter. Stout is one of the classic types of ale. Usually a very dark, heavy, well-hopped bitter ale, with dry palate, thick creamy head, and good grainy taste thanks to the use of dark roasted barley in the mash. 12

India Pale Ale (IPA) changed the face of brewing early in the 19th century. First brewed in London and Burton-upon-Trent for a national market and export, IPAs were strong in alcohol and high in hops, with a significant sulphur nose. They kept well. Beers with less alcohol and hops were developed for the domestic market and were known as Pale Ale.

OLD ALE Old Ales reflect the beers available before brewing restrictions were introduced in the First World War. Contrary to expectation, they do not have to be especially strong; they can be 4% ABV or more. Old Ale can be full of complex flavours, rich fruity malts, tart fruit and spicy hop notes. Darker versions will have a more profound malt character with powerful hints of roasted grain, dark fruit, polished leather, and fresh tobacco. The hallmark of the style remains a lengthy period of maturation during which complex flavours develop.

BARLEY WINE Barley Wine is a strong beer, often between 7% and 10% - and requires considerable time to mature and become drinkable. A few family brewers have kept the traditional brew, often as a Christmas Ale, and many small brewers now produce their own interpretation of the style. Expect massive sweet malt, ripe fruit, pear drop, orange and lemon flavours; with darker fruits, chocolate and coffee if darker malts are used. Hop rates are generous and produce bitterness and peppery, grassy and floral notes.

THE THIRTY FIFTH PIGS EAR BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL

BEER STYLE & SUBSTANCE SPECIALITY BEERS Embrace all types of beer that contain a noncore brewing ingredient intended to impart a distinctive and discernible avour or character. Examples could be ginger, honey, various fruits, etc. Also: wheat beers, and traditional lager. A recent trend is to use smoked malt, a distinctive taste, not enjoyed by everyone.

BOTTLE CONDITIONED BEER This is real ale in a bottle and the bottled equivalent of the draught real ales you enjoy in the pub. The beer is NOT pasteurised and contains yeast and enough fermentable sugars to allow for a slow secondary fermentation in the bottle. To distinguish this from pasteurised bottled ales, many bottle conditioned beers include the logo ‘CAMRA says this is Real Ale’ on the bottle label.

KEYKEG BEER A KeyKeg is a single use plastic container with the beer “baggedâ€? inside it. The KeyKeg beers we have at the Festival are unpasteurised and unďŹ ltered; and are dispensed using air pressure

only. As with bottle conditioned beer, secondary fermentation takes place within the KeyKeg, so from a CAMRA perspective the beer is Real Ale. Our KeyKeg beers are dispensed via Kegerator machines, served chilled and tend to be lively - give them a try - let us know your verdict.

UNFINED (VEGAN FRIENDLY) BEER For centuries cask beers have had isinglass ďŹ nings (made from the swim bladders of ďŹ sh) added to help clear the beer. UnďŹ ned beers do not have this addition, and as a result can be naturally hazy. Not all unďŹ ned beers are vegan friendly beers however, some may contain other nonvegan additions: lactose, or honey for example.

LOCALE This is CAMRA’s environmentally friendly initiative for serving beer brewed within 30 miles of the outlet. Our LocAle breweries are marked LOCALE BREWERY in this programme. All our Hackney & East London breweries are marked EAST LONDON BREWERY X

DRAUGHT BEER

H

ello and welcome to our Festival. Beer guru’s Peter Gordon, John Pardoe & Keen Massey have again tried to keep the interest in new beers and breweries going strong. We know you like to try something different each year, so we look across the length and breadth of Britain to showcase the smaller micro-breweries, as well as our wonderful breweries in East London. Our thanks to suppliers Avalon Wholesale, Great Heck, and 6 Barrels; they help us source the beers from further afield and are an essential part of our team. Our thanks also to those breweries that don’t usually produce cask ale, but who have agreed to do so for this festival. To help you decide, we have a colour coding scheme and the breweries descriptions of their beers. We aim to give you the widest choice by having just 1 cask of each beer. Some beers are in larger casks (on handpumps) so will last longer into the festival. Our draught UK cask beers are arranged alphabetically by brewery name from the righthand side of the venue (near Glasses), around to the left-hand side (by the Food stalls). For fans of the “Dark Side”, have no fear! we have ordered

just as many dark and delicious beers as always, but you will find them located by their brewery name. All our UK KeyKeg beers are located on one bar (next to the Foreign Beer bar). Not all beers can be on together due to limited stillage space, so please refer to the labels on the casks for what is available when you visit. Our Cellar Team and Bar Managers will ensure that as soon as a beer is in best condition it will be on sale, and of course replace beers that have sold out with new beers as quickly as possible. A suggestion for anyone new to the festival, the strength (ABV%) of the beers varies considerably. If you are in for a session, we suggest you start with the lower strength beers first. That way you can appreciate their subtle flavours more, starting with the strongest beers could have quite an impact on your ability to walk, or even think! Enjoy yourselves and the beers on offer, have a safe journey home, and do please return another day to enjoy yourselves all over again. Cheers KEEN MASSEY & STEVE RICHARDSON Draught Beer Order & Cellar Team

CIDER & PERRY BAR

CIDER & PERRY BAR W elcome to the Cider and Perry Bar. Real cider is one of the simplest of drinks. You take apples, crush them and then press out the juice, and several or more months later, as if by magic, you have cider. The more traditional ciders use the wild, natural yeast that is found on the skins and in the flesh. Other producers use their own strain of yeast, but either way, you end up with a natural product which is a live drink in the same way that real ale is. A sweetener may be added to make a medium or sweet cider. Unfortunately, a lot of the ciders now available in pubs have been pasteurised, and not only do you not know that, but very often the pub doesn’t know either, because the producers do not usually tell anyone. In the West Country and Wales cider apples are used. These apples are grown specifically for making cider. In the Eastern Counties and elsewhere the tradition is to

WE HOPE TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING CIDERS AND PERRIES AVAILABLE, ALTHOUGH THEY MAY NOT ALL BE AVAILABLE AT THE SAME TIME

use a mixture of eating and cooking apples, giving a completely different style of cider. Most keg ciders found these days in pubs are often made with apple concentrate, sugar water and water, flavourings, and colourings. They are filtered, pasteurised and have gas added. They have no connection with real cider whatsoever. Perry is made the same as cider, but with pears. These are normally perry pears, grown exclusively for this purpose. This drink is not as common in pubs as cider, and most of the public have never even heard of it. At this festival, you will probably find the biggest range of unpasteurised ciders and perries in East London. If you’ve not drunk real cider or perry before, why not give it a try, you may be pleasantly surprised. MICK LEWIS CIDER BAR MANAGER

Over 500 trees have been planted on the farm. It is hoped to have a single variety cider made from an early apple called Morgan Sweet. DUCKCHICKEN Furzedown, London, SW16

Surprise is a rarity – a naturally sweet cider. CROSSMAN Hewish, Somerset Started in the mid 1970s by Ben Crossman using his grandfather’s cider making equipment. DAY’S COTTAGE Brookthorpe, Gloucestershire

Small producer who started two years ago with apples from Kent. We will have a cider called Gigglejuice. HAYWOOD St Mabyn, Cornwall Producing cider since 2003. WHAT PUB?

WHATPUB.COM AND THE NATIONAL BEER SCORING SCHEME (NBSS) It is CAMRA policy for all CAMRA branches to use NBSS scores to assist in selecting pubs for the Good Beer Guide. South East Essex branch also uses NBSS for Seasonal pub awards. The online scoring system is incorporated into the whatpub.com website WHAT’S WHATPUB.COM ALL ABOUT? You can use whatpub.com to search for pubs across the UK and then look up opening times, descriptions, facilities and of course details of the real ale and cider on offer. Being an online guide means that extra functions such as additional text for descriptions, photos and live map data are also available. Our aim is to get every pub in the UK listed on whatpub.com and all with complete and up to date information such as descriptions and photos. The Good Beer Guide (GBG) is our showcase to the world, it demonstrates that we as a campaign believe that excellent real ale is worth campaigning for. It plays a vital part in supporting our pubs because if you want to drink cask ale then the pub is the obvious option. Every pub in the GBG should sell great beer all the time. The view of over one hundred thousand people is the key to that consistency and the National Beer Scoring Scheme is the tool to make that job as easy as possible. If you drink real ale in a pub, and have ever thought about why it is or indeed why it isn’t in the GBG, then by scoring it you can make a difference. Also, if you have anything to do with selecting pubs for the GBG you have a duty to listen to what over 186,000 fellow members are saying about your pubs. WHAT ARE THE BEER SCORES USED FOR AND HOW DO I ENTER ONE? Beer scores are entered by CAMRA members and are used by CAMRA branches in order to help select the best pubs for the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. To submit a beer score, simply join CAMRA and as a member you will be given a login that you can use to access additional features on whatpub.com. The National Beer Scoring Scheme (NBSS) is a 0-5 point scale for judging beer quality in pubs. It is an easy to use system that has been designed to assist CAMRA branches in selecting pubs 44

for the Good Beer Guide and monitoring beer quality by encouraging CAMRA members to report on beer quality where ever they go. Start by searching for pubs on the main whatpub. com website. A list of possible choices is shown - click on the pub that you want and submit your beer score using the panel to the right hand side. Beer scores can be entered at http://whatpub.com/ When you first enter the database you will be asked to login. Your username is your CAMRA membership number. The password is the one you use to access the national website. WHAT DO THE SCORES MEAN? Undrinkable. No cask ale available or so poor you have to take it back or can’t finish it.

0 1 2

Poor. Beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment. Average. Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn’t inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing.

3

Good. Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.

4 5

Very Good. Excellent beer inexcellent condition. Perfect. Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.

CAMRA MASS LOBBY DAY

CAMRA MASS LOBBY DAY O

n Tuesday 6th Nov 2018 hundreds of CAMRA members, including delegates from East London and City branch, descended on Westminster to send a message to MPs about the very serious threats facing pubs. All agreed there must be urgent reform to business rates, Beer Duty and the Pubs Code to save the Great British pub from extinction. The Lobby Day saw the launch of CAMRA’s three point plan to save the Great British pub, and encouraged MPs to commit to. 1. Introducing a preferential rate of duty for draught beer. 2. Reforming the business rates system to address the unfair burden on pubs. 3. Conducting an urgent review of the Pubs Code so that the Market Rent Only option becomes a genuine choice for tenants. CAMRA members held meetings with MPs throughout the day, which culminated in a rally with speeches from the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, Mike Wood MP, as well as Ruth Smeeth MP and Alan Brown MP. The Lobby came the day after the Budget, which contained the very welcome decision to freeze duty on beer and cider, and the announcement of a new package of business rate relief that will help smaller pubs. While this change will see annual savings of up to £8,000 for some pubs, CAMRA is extremely disappointed that pub-specific rate relief has been scrapped, meaning that pubs with a rateable value of over £51,000 will lose out. Many of these pubs saw the largest rates increases after the last revaluation, and are struggling under skyhigh bills that threaten them with extinction. CAMRA’s National Chairman, Jackie Parker, said: “While welcome, the Budget measures are just a sticking plaster which doesn’t tackle the root issue. There must be long-term change and reform to business rates, Beer

Duty and the Pubs Code to stop the decline of pubs. Currently 18 close each week. “The Lobby Day has been a huge success. It gave members an opportunity to speak to their MPs direct about tackling the root causes of pub closures, need for fundamental reform to ensure that pubs remain at the heart of communities and continue to make a valuable contribution to our society, culture and economy.” Speaking at the Members’ Rally, Mike Wood MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group added: “We need to make sure that we have a proper review of local business taxation which goes beyond what was announced (in the Budget) on business rates, so that pubs of all sizes are actually taxed at a fair rate and we have a taxation system fit for the 21st century rather than the 1950s, and one that recognises the economy as it is now rather than one that was based solely on land values.” NIGEL TARN EAST LONDON AND CITY CAMRA PRESS AND PUBLICITY OFFICER
