38TH CAMRA SOUTH EAST ESSEX ROCHFORD BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL

W

elcome to the annual Rochford Beer & Cider Festival, organized and run by the South East Essex branch of CAMRA. The great British Pub is very much under threat as a result of spiralling business rates. CAMRA is calling for an annual £5,000 reduction in business rates for every pub across England, after revealing that since the early 1970s nearly 30,000 pubs have called “last orders” and closed their doors for good. Across England CAMRA has been lobbying MP’s to attend and speak at a very important Parliamentary debate which was held in early November. Hopefully you may have heard the outcome of the debate which had not been announced as I write this. Fingers crossed that the outcome is good. Locally we have been very excited that the local beer scene has exploded with two new breweries opening. Firstly Leigh-on Sea Brewery started brewing in late September and just recently Fable Brewery started to brew in late October. Beers from both breweries should be available during this festival for you to sample. We are also pleased to see another Micropub open, called West Road Tap, Westcliff-on Sea and this opened in May 2017 serving up to four Real Ales, four Keycask beers and a range of bottled and canned beers from around the world. Do please check the West Road Tap web site for opening times.

South Benfleet Social Club, winners of both the local branch and East Anglian Club of the Year awards.

This year’s Country Pub of the Year, the Shepherd & Dog.

What a year it has been for South Benfleet Social Club, firstly they won the local branch Club of the Year (COTY) and then went on to win a regional heat to become East Anglia Club of the Year. This is great news for them, and don’t forget they have a beer festival with 20 Ales and Ciders starting on the 30th November. This year’s Pub of the Year (POTY) competition was held and, as usual, we asked the membership locally to vote. The members voted for Mawson’s Micropub in Southchurch. A fantastic result for Neil and the team and everyone else connected with Mawson’s. Also Mawson’s Micropub also won the Cider Pub of the Year with a range of around six Ciders always available, so make sure you visit. Our Country Pub of the Year went to the Shepherd & Dog, Ballards Gore. A wonderful country pub normally offering six changing Real Ales. Don’t forget that the Shepherd & Dog can be visited by public transport as Stephensons of Essex operate bus 60 which stops outside the pub. Check their web site for times. Finally, please raise your glasses to all the hard working CAMRA volunteers who are serving you at this festival. You could join CAMRA and by doing so, offer to help run the festival. Many thanks for attending this year’s event. Mark Bullock South East Essex CAMRA Chairman

SOUTH EAST ESSEX CAMRA BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL

WELCOME

W

elcome and thank you for coming to the Rochford Beer and Cider Festival. If you are new to real ale, just ask one of our helpful bar staff who will be able to guide you through what we have on offer and help you choose a style to suit. Likewise at the cider bar, we can help you with our vast range of cider and perry and advise which of them will suit your taste. Everyone is more than happy to help, so just ask! We hope you like our new Craft Beer Bar. Craft beer has become very popular so we thought we would try to go with the times and unleash this style on Rochford. Your reaction will determine whether we run it next year. In South East Essex we have had an explosion of breweries this year. It was not long ago we did not have any in our area and now there are five. The three new ones, Leigh On Sea, Fable and Keppells, who will soon be setting up here in Rochford and joining the slightly older Georges and Billericay, ensuring a great selection of local beers both at the Festival and in many local pubs. And now some thanks. We have been successful in obtaining cooling for the East Anglian Bar for which thanks go to Mark at Georges Brewery and also for the Branch Bar so thank you Trevor at Billericay Brewery. Without these two local brewers’ help we would have been unable to do this so thanks again to them for donating something to help enhance your enjoyment of the beers on those bars. Still on that theme thank you to Nairnsey, Fisher and Lewis your local solicitors from Rochford whose generous sponsorship of the Festival helps us keep our beer prices to a reasonable level. The next thank you is to Dan from Keppels Brewery for a first for Rochford, namely the very fashionable T-Shirts which most of our volunteer’s are wearing, and will be taking home free of charge. That brings me onto our volunteer staff. They are vital to the smooth running of the

festival to ensure you have the best experience possible. Being volunteers they do this for the passion of real ale and cider so a very big Rochford thank you to everyone who has given up their own time ranging from a few hours to the whole the eight days we are in residence in the Freight House. If they hadn’t given their time this Festival would not exist. So please treat everyone with the respect they deserve. They are working free of charge for your enjoyment. If you would like to join the Festival crew next year just email or chat to me or speak to the Staffing Manager, Sue Cater who can usually be found near the front door. Or email her on staffing@see.camra.org.uk . I would also like to thank the Organising Team but especially three people Andy Ferguson, Nick Ferguson and Doug Wren. The Festival nearly didn’t happen this year as a problem occurred at a very late stage. Those three put their heads above the parapet, and put many hours in so this wonderful festival could take place. Thank Andy Doug and Nick again. Without you we might not have been here now. The final vote of thanks goes to our customers. Thanks again for your feedback last year, it really does matter and as a result we have kept the Branch Bar and the improved seating layout in that back bar. This was due to comments from our customers so please keep them coming. Many of you know me as I have been organising this Festival for over fifteen years , if not my nickname Slaphead is on my badge so come and talk to me. Or my personal email is stephen.dunham@hotmail.co.uk. We will be back next year Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th November (inclusive) Please put in your diaries now! Cheers and enjoy the Festival Steve Dunham

The Crooked Billet, The Peterboat, The Smack, The Mayflower and The Ship during Twixmas (if you don’t mind) 2016. Mark Springham and Ian Rydings agreed that with 80 years of drinking between them, they knew a thing or two about beer and might possibly be able to brew some. So, in March 2017 the two friends (from way back at the Thurrock Hockey Club in the 1970’s) attended a Brew School The Leigh on Sea team, Ian Rydings on left course in Bakewell (Derbyshire) of picture and Mark Springham on the right. on Brewing and Establishing a capital from supportive friends and family, asset Microbrewery. GOODBYE LADS D

uring last year’s beer festival we were without our main Beer Festival Manager Dave Walsh – as he was taken ill shortly before, having being diagnosed with cancer. We all felt that the strong old goat would beat this but sadly, he passed away whilst the festival was running. A shock to us all. Talking with fellow volunteers at the festival, it was without a doubt that Dave would be remembered and honoured in the logo this year. Those who knew him will recall that he regularly put a beer mat on top of his beer (to keep the bar flies out). Also, within the Beer Festival team, we had a supply of cheese (to clean the palate), much needed whilst undertaking the

arduous task of Quality Control. On several occasions during the festivals, this cheese supply “mysteriously” dwindled. Upon questioning, Dave suggested that a little mouse must have been the culprit... And finally, as recognised in one of the Festival Specials, Dave loved whacking those taps in with his trusty mallet. The logo formulating in my mind was based around incorporating those images above, but before I could put pen to paper more sad news was to befall the branch. Two other stalwart Branch members also passed away. Barry Chandler and Denis Kirby both long time beer festival volunteers. Therefore, they are also rremembered in the logo. Barry, a CAMRA member for over forty yyears, was one of the few who gamely dressed as James Bond in 2007 – the d ttheme for that year’s festival; and Denis with his motorcycle heritage (and not forgetting h tthe bottled beer that he inevitably seemed to win in the raffle at branch meetings). SOUTH EAST ESSEX CAMRA BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL

It is CAMRA policy for all CAMRA branches to use NBSS scores to assist in selecting pubs for the Good Beer Guide. South East Essex branch also uses NBSS for Seasonal pub awards. The online scoring system is incorporated into the whatpub.com website What’s whatpub.com all about? You can use whatpub.com to search for pubs across the UK and then look up opening times, descriptions, facilities and of course details of the real ale and cider on offer. Being an online guide means that extra functions such as additional text for descriptions, photos and live map data are also available. Our aim is to get every pub in the UK listed on whatpub.com and all with complete and up to date information such as descriptions and photos. The Good Beer Guide (GBG) is our showcase to the world, it demonstrates that we as a campaign believe that excellent real ale is worth campaigning for. It plays a vital part in supporting our pubs because if you want to drink cask ale then the pub is the obvious option. Every pub in the GBG should sell great beer all the time. The view of over one hundred thousand people is the key to that consistency and the National Beer Scoring Scheme is the tool to make that job as easy as possible. If you drink real ale in a pub, and have ever thought about why it is or indeed why it isn’t in the GBG, then by scoring it you can make a difference. Also, if you have anything to do with selecting pubs for the GBG you have a duty to listen to what over 186,000 fellow members are saying about your pubs. What are the beer scores used for and how do I enter one? Beer scores are entered by CAMRA members and are used by CAMRA branches in order to help select the best pubs for the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. To submit a beer score, simply join CAMRA and as a member you will be given a login that you can use to access additional features on whatpub.com. The National Beer Scoring Scheme (NBSS) is a 0-5 point scale for judging beer quality in pubs. It is an easy to use system that has been designed to assist CAMRA branches in selecting pubs for the Good Beer Guide and monitoring beer quality by encouraging CAMRA members to report on beer quality where ever they go. Start by searching for pubs on the main whatpub. com website. A list of possible choices is shown

- click on the pub that you want and submit your beer score using the panel to the right hand side. Beer scores can be entered at http://whatpub.com/ When you first enter the database you will be asked to login. Your username is your CAMRA membership number. The password is the one you use to access the national website. What do the scores mean?

0

Undrinkable. No cask ale available or so poor you have to take it back or can’t finish it.

1

Poor. Beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment.

2

Average. Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn’t inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing.

3

Good. Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.

4 5

Very Good. Excellent beer in excellent condition. Perfect. Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.

his year, there’s the usual local cider, along with a small selection from East Anglian makers. We’ll also have a selection from some of the less typical places you would expect to find real cider. All of the well known ‘industrial’ ciders are not recognised by CAMRA as ‘Real Traditional Cider or Perry’. Many people have rediscovered the delights of Traditional Cider and Perry and the rich world of flavours they offer to those sampling their delights. Real Cider and Perry represent a tradition that has been enjoyed in Britain since Roman times. Whilst the methods of production have benefited from modernisation, the

basics still stay the same. Pick the fruit, press the fruit, allow to ferment, then enjoy. This results in a product that is unpasteurised, un-carbonated and full of natural flavours. Cider and Perry can be any combination of mellow, aromatic, tangy, sharp, fruity, or tannic, as well as being sweet, medium or dry. These are real flavours not masked by cold temperature or fizz! Please be aware that traditional ciders and perries typically have higher alcohol content than most of the commercial cider you buy in pubs or supermarkets, so please drink responsibly and enjoy your time at the festival. THANK YOU to all the pubs, breweries and businesses who advertise in our programme. Without them, the programme would not be possible. Please visit them and support them.

Please support these and all other pubs as they face a very challenging time in the industry. The Punchbowl at Paglesham is an example of a pub we could lose. The new owners have found their first year a struggle, but have invested in refurbishments and will continue to encourage more custom: “As new owners of the historic and traditional English freehouse, the Punchbowl (Paglesham) we are delighted with keeping existing customers and welcoming lots more new customers to this beautiful countryside area of Essex. We have painstakingly revived the old pub back to its former glory. All kept in keeping with its history. New menus and new ales and a fresh new wine list are helping entice people new and old back to the Punchbowl. Monthly singers, monthly quizzes, dogs welcome, real log burning stoves installed, along with cheese and wine nights are all in place to encourage support from the community. We also offer a fully homemade food menu including a specials board where the dishes are made by one of the owners to ensure great taste at reasonable prices. Adding the all day breakfast has brought some success in enticing new customers. We will continue to work hard to help keep this historic pub open and a young family in this pub.”

YOUR LOCAL - USE IT OR LOSE IT!

The Ale Trail encourages people to try real ale and real cider in different pubs throughout South East Essex.
