40TH CAMRA SOUTH EAST ESSEX ROCHFORD BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL
A
warm welcome to our Beer & Cider Festival organised and run by the VOLUNTEERS of CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale). We have been here at the Freight House, Rochford, for several years although that may change if building works go ahead. But let’s not worry about that now; we’ve changed locations before and we look forward to new adventures. We’re here because we love beer, cider and perry and want you to enjoy it too. Please ask your friendly volunteer bar staff for advice or a taste to help you find your favourites. Thank you to the SE Essex CAMRA Branch beer festival committee and ALL the volunteers who give their time and commitment to run this festival each year. Like so many volunteer organisations, we struggle to find enough members to run our event. All our active members have other commitments and cannot be available for all sessions during the Beer and Cider Festival week (eight long days including Set Up and Take Down). Some members help for just a session or two, some are here for the full eight exhausting days. Without them there would be NO festival. Please be patient and kind; they are all giving their time freely. Sometimes we are short of volunteers due to illness or other emergencies.
If you would like to join our team and keep this festival running, please contact our Staffing Officer: Chris Rouse (often found at the Cider and Perry Bar) or our Beer Festival Organiser: Steve Murray (usually found at the Foreign Beer Bar). Huge thanks are also owed to the many people and businesses behind the scenes who sponsor and help us, including NAIRNSEY FISHER & LEWIS. Please try to support them and ALL the sponsors and advertisers in this programme. Our local breweries are producing great beer and some are winning awards around the country, so please support them here at the festival or more importantly, in pubs. Many pubs have closed and others are struggling due to issues including unfair PubCo pressures, and high Business Rates. Please keep visiting them. Look out for the NEW locations of the popular Pipers Crisps and Oddfellows Chocolate stalls. If you have an unspent amount on your token, please consider donating it to our Charity Box at the front desk. This year your donations will be raising money for Canine Partners. Many thanks for attending this event and we hope to see you all again next year. Cheers MAGGIE PINTO South East Essex CAMRA Chairman

WELCOME
H
ello and Welcome to this, the 40th CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival organised by the South East Essex Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale. Just think about that, we started when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, Pink Floyd released “The Wall” album, Sony released the revolutionary Walkman tape cassette player and 10 years after the first Moon Landing. Things have certainly changed a lot since then, including the choice and quality of real ale available to you. Some of this being due to the creation of CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale) in 1971 and here we are today. The campaigning focus has now changed to the current issues which threaten the drinking public. The massive reduction of public houses due to closure is a constant threat. The increasing price of a pint due to pressures on landlords from inflated rents from their PubCos (Pub Companies who own property estates) who also employee devious, restrictive and manipulative practices. The breweries are pressured from the highest Beer Duty in Europe, and increasing Business Rates are another problem. This all creates a vicious downward spiral of less drinkers leading to less pubs, leading to less choice leading to less drinkers. The CAMRA website (camra.org.uk) and our branch website (see.camra.org.uk) both have more information on these threats and the national campaigns to tackle them as well as a wealth of information on beer and cider. Visit them and consider joining the 190,000+ other CAMRA members in the fight to protect your pint and our national heritage of a friendly pub in which to drink it. Please support our sponsors and advertisers in this programme who help us make this festival a reality. Look for our regular friends, Pipers Crisps and
Oddfellows Chocolate who have moved to the mezzanine (top of stairs from both halls) just so that you have more room in the main hall to choose and drink your beers. We must also thank all the people staffing this festival. They are unpaid volunteers who selflessly give up their time and energy away from their families and using Annual Leave from their work just so that you can enjoy the large selection of beers and ciders. Be assured that without them this festival would certainly not happen. Setting up, staffing and dismantling this festival which runs from Sunday to Sunday, lots of hands make light work. If you would like to get involved and volunteer ask for the Staffing Manager, the Chairman, or me, or look for details on our branch website. Anyway, enjoy our festival and please complete one of our feedback forms to choose your favourite beer. Cheers! Steve Murray Beer Festival Organiser

BEER IMBIBER
BEER IMBIBER LONG LIVE THE LOCAL! By Steve Finn
I
guess, like many of us, I like the idea that I have a decent nose for nonsense. That may just mean that I’m a fairly (very!) cynical old git but I see a lot of this stuff dropping into my email or Facebook feed, usually because someone has ‘liked’ or forwarded it, and I often think ‘mmm, not sure’ or ‘really?’ or, as in this case, ‘what’s really going on here behind the scenes?’ The answer this time would be ABInBev, Carlsberg, Heineken and Molson Coors. It took maybe ten minutes looking at the Long Live The Local website to figure this out. Why? Because I had to make coffee as well. Oh, why? Well, it turns out that the campaign is ‘backed’ by Britain’s Beer Alliance and that particular organisation is funded by, well, take a guess… I am a cynic, I get that, but these companies are cynical on a national level and that site, plus the ‘campaign’ they are running are about as deceitful as advertising gets as far as I can see and people are falling for it in droves; from the start of their campaign to now hundreds of thousands of people have signed their petition; assuming their numbers are to be trusted of course. And it’s deceitful because? Kidding, surely? OK, how many people would sign a petition fronted by Heineken to ‘save the local’ when Big Beer has been as responsible as anybody else for the decimation of local pubs and the dumbing down of their own products in pursuit of profit? Let’s have a quick look at deceitful marketing, because it grinds my gears massively, and then move on to profit and just who’s zooming who because it might be a bit of fun. SO DECEIT, WHY AM I SO CONVINCED THAT THEY ARE YANKING OUR CHAINS? Have a look at that site, Long Live The Local, and it looks like it’s been knocked together 6
by a bunch of good old boys in a taproom over a few beers. It’s a bit clunky, a bit wibbly in places and has a few typos here and there, as it would be if it were a knock-together. The truth is a bit different though. The campaign is run by Havas PR, a global conglomerate, who have run campaigns for Emirates, Volvo and Dubai Tourism among others. Typos and cute clunkiness for a company of this stature would not happen, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that any errors are designed in. Why? Again? Okay, how about because the annual budget for this campaign is £3 million, yes – three million pounds. How many typos would you accept in a £3 million six page website? Me too. Okay, so they’re being a bit tricky. Still a good cause though right? Mmm, is it as cut and dried as that?
SOUTH EAST ESSEX CAMRA BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL
IS BEER REALLY SO OVER PRICED? In 1983 the average pint of beer cost 70p, in 2018 it was £3.00 (probably much thanks to Wetherspoon’s) so beer has gone up by a staggering 429% or 11.92% per year, scandalous right? In the same period though, average wages have gone up by 369% or 10.26% per year so actually not as scandalous as at first sight. So beer’s gone up, but not as much as we are being told.
captured to date out of our commitment to deliver 3.2 billion USD by the end of 2019. That’s $202 million profit in 2018. BUT THEY WANT TO GIVE US CHEAPER BEER SO THAT’S A GOOD THING RIGHT? Their take on tax was a bit more telling in 2016: While no companies were explicitly named in the EU Commission ruling, reports in Belgium and the UK have quoted sources naming ABInBev as one of the beneficiaries of the illegal scheme. The brewer reportedly transferred around €140 million (£105m) out of its taxable accounts and into a non-taxable holding company under an “excess profit” ruling awarded by the initiative. Here’s my personal take on the Long Live Your Local campaign: It’s funded by Big Beer and Big Beer, in my opinion, doesn’t give the teeniest, tiniest, most microscopic flying fig about your local. It’s a marketing campaign designed to put pressure on the Chancellor to cut duty which would bolster their bottom line.
DO ABINBEV ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT YOUR LOCAL? I don’t know, but if they cared about your beer rather than their bottom line they may not have dropped the ABV of Stella from 5.2% to 4.8%. They might well say that they did that in order to ‘stay in line with our competitors’ but there’s no doubting that they have been squealing DO YOU REALLY WANT TO about costs for years and that ABV cut is huge SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL? in terms of their bottom line; seriously. Then go and have a pint of real ale, or a When Heineken pulled the same stunt pint of overpriced Stella that’s had the guts in 2013 reducing John Smith’s Smooth ripped out of it if you must, but please from 3.8% to 3.6% it put a dazzling think before you lend support to these £6.6m on their bottom line according companies; they’ve been taking the mickey to the Financial Times at the time. for years and are flapping now because the I’m not going after ABInbe v particularly, craft beer revolution that’s sweeping the in fact Heineken or Coors would have been country is showing up their overpriced and easier to spell, they are just first on my list under strength pish for exactly what it is. and very typical of Big Beer as far as I’m For Beer Imbiber news take a concerned so they are representative. look at www.beerimbiber.co.uk and As with most big companies, they are www.facebook.com/BeerImbiber. Q nowhere near as cuddly as they would like us to believe and they are definitely not scratching around to make ends meet, their annual report strikes a very upbeat note: AB InBev Annual Report 2019 (Ref: 2018) Delivering profitable growth, with EBITDA margin expansion of 118 bps to 40.4%, driven by premiumization, cost discipline and continued synergy capture. We achieved further synergies from the combination with SAB, with 805 million USD in 2018 and over 2.9 billion USD Thanks to Mile and a Third for hosting some of our CAMRA meetings. No, no it isn’t. The challenges that pubs face are many and varied; it’s fair to say that the tax burden is a factor but tax isn’t the only headwind facing the industry.
SOUTH EAST ESSEX CAMRA AWARDS
SOUTH EAST ESSEX CAMRA AWARDS
T
he South East Essex Branch of CAMRA awarded Pub of the Season (Summer) to a Westcliff pub: the Mile and a Third, on Hamlet Court Road. There is lots of competition now with plenty of good pubs in the area serving real ale, including the Hamlet Court pub which is opposite, plus the Cricketers and the Railway Hotel in Southend. The Pub of the Season award takes place twice a year, in Summer and in Winter.
8
Awards are decided based on WhatPub scores; CAMRA members W use the NBSS (National Beer Scoring System) on whatpub.com to assess pubs they visit. The Mile and a Third is run by Andy and Nick Ferguson and is very popular with CAMRA members for the good quality real ales which are served direct from the cask (on gravity). Other options include cider, craft beer, gin and wine as well as low or no alcohol choices so there is something for everyone. Maggie Pinto (SE Essex CAMRA Chairman) presented the award to Andy Ferguson. An award was also presented to Mark Bullock p for “Services to CAMRA” to fo tthank Mark for his many years of volunteering for South o East Essex CAMRA, including E several terms as Chairman. Without volunteers, CAMRA (and this festival) would not exist, so we are very grateful to everyone who gives up their free time to promote real ale. Q

ink’s Tipsy Tavern was at Hockley Woods for several weekends this summer while the Bull pub was being rebuilt after a terrible ďŹ re. Bottled beers from local breweries including Keppels, George’s and Fable were available. The Tavern started out life as 7.5 tonne horse box lovingly nicknamed Doris. She was painstakingly transformed into the fantastical bar she is today by her owner Sharon (Tink). Tink is passionate about community and bringing people together. The mission is to use our Pop Up Pub to spread joy, combat loneliness and champion communities over a good old pint (or gin, or wine‌ you get the idea)! CIDER AND PERRY
CIDER & PERRY
T
his year, there’s the usual local cider, along with a small selection from East Anglian makers. We’ll also have a range from some of the less typical places you would expect to find real cider. All of the well known ‘industrial’ ciders are not recognised by CAMRA as ‘Real Traditional Cider or Perry’. Many people have rediscovered the delights of Traditional Cider and Perry and the rich world of flavours they offer to those sampling their delights. Real Cider and Perry represent a tradition that has been enjoyed in Britain since Roman times. Whilst the methods of production have benefited from modernisation, the
basics still stay the same. Pick the fruit, press the fruit, allow to ferment, then enjoy. This results in a product that is unpasteurised, un-carbonated and full of natural flavours. Cider and Perry can be any combination of mellow, aromatic, tangy, sharp, fruity, or tannic, as well as being sweet, medium or dry. These are real flavours not masked by cold temperature or fizz! Please be aware that traditional ciders and perries typically have higher alcohol content than most of the commercial cider you get in pubs or supermarkets, so please drink responsibly and enjoy your time at the festival. FOR BEERKIND! 2019 FESTIVAL LOGO O ne of the biggest anniversaries this year was that of the first landing on the moon, 50 years ago. Although the anniversary was back in July, I designed a logo based around the Apollo spacecraft which famously dispensed with various stages on its way to the moon. I thought I could use these “stages” to represent the various stages of the beer journey. The first stage (representing the brewing process) depicted by the fermenter; the second stage (representing the methods of container-ship for distribution) depicted by a barrel and a craft-keg; and the final stage (representing how we imbibe this wonderful product) depicted by a pint glass and a bottle. You may think that there is a spelling error on that final stage as I’ve called it the ULNA MODULE – which is almost the same letters as LUNAR MODULE. However, the Ulna is one of the bones in the forearm – and it is generally the forearm that raises the bottle or glass to one’s lips. Well, I thought it was humerus!
