Steps to take if you come across a shoplifter Four different scenarios you could face Here is some advice from the NZ Police Crime Prevention Booklet designed specifically for small business. To download the full booklet click here: http://www.onehunga.net.nz/wp-content/ uploads/2013/06/business-crime-prevention. If you think a potential thief is in your store

If you believe a theft has occurred

Don‘t be afraid to approach a suspect a second or third time, asking if you can be of assistance. Thieves feel uneasy when they are approached by attentive staff – it makes them feel that you are aware of their intentions. Genuine customers will not mind the attention of your staff.

-Think about your safety at all times. Get another staff member to assist you, and if you feel unsafe at any point, let the suspect leave. -Approach the suspect and identify yourself. Stay at a safe distance. -Be polite. Do not be confrontational -Tell them what you saw them do -Tell them to return with you to the office

If the suspect is cooperative

If the suspect is aggressive or runs off

-If you are by yourself, walk behind the suspect to the office. If you are assisted have the other staff member walk in front of the suspect and direct the way. -Watch to see if the suspect discards any stolen items -In the office, seat the suspect in an area where they cannot hide or steal further items. ( Suggestion – keep your office door open while you are speaking to the suspect, or have another employee with you as a witness so the suspect cannot accuse you of illtreatment) -Note any explanations or admissions -Call 111 and ask for police

-It is better to let the suspect go than risk being assaulted. -If you feel safe enough to follow them, keep a safe distance. -Advise another staff member that you are following a shoplifter out of the shop and get them to call 111 and ask for police -The person who telephones police needs to explain where your shop is, what you and the suspect look like, and in which direction you went. -If you are following the thief, take a cell phone with you if you can. -Call 111 and advise the police that you are following a shoplifter. Also give your location and direction of travel. -When you see a police vehicle, wave it down and identify yourself. -Give the police a description of the thief

When the police arrive they will speak to you first. They will interview the suspect and decide if an arrest is warranted. They will also search the suspect.

OBA Supports Ban On Begging Proposed bylaw attracts large debate

Last week the media announced that the Onehunga Business Association was one of three organisations that supported a ban on street begging. The proposed bylaw has attracted much debate and at times put the OBA in the spotlight. We took this stance as we have had first-hand experience with beggars in Onehunga and do not believe begging is the answer. Many of the beggars we encounter are young kids or adults who are often substance abusers or have been forced to beg by associates for criminal purposes and can be very intimidating. ― We want people at risk to get help, not be given money on the street that allows them to engage in harmful activity. We also want people to be able to walk freely down the street without being hassled,‖ says Onehunga Town Manager, Amanda Kinzett.

Consumer law changes will support businesses too Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act changes

Upcoming changes to consumer laws, such as the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act, will support businesses as well as consumers. Changing consumer laws will help consumers transact with confidence and support honest business practices. This will promote competition, innovation and sustained growth. Having a good understanding of consumer laws gives your customers peace of mind and builds trust in your business. Consumer Guarantees Act The main changes include: Protections to cover all transactions between businesses and consumers, including auctions (both online and offline) and competitive tenders. Better protection for consumers who receive goods by courier. The sender will now be responsible for the goods, up to the point of delivery. Fair Trading Act The main changes include: New provisions to prevent unfair contract terms in all standard form contracts. New provisions to cover unsubstantiated representations (such as claims made by a retailer about a good or service without reasonable grounds), extended warranties, and conduct at auctions. The Act will cover layby sales, unsolicited goods and services, and door-to-door sales (including telephone sales). Matariki Through Our Eyes Art Exhibition Onehunga Community Centre, 12-17 July

‘Through Our Eyes‘ Matariki Exhibition is now in its third year. This event encourages local community participation and showcases members of the Onehunga Art Group who have gone on to exhibit nationally, win art competitions and sell their artworks. The theme ‗Through Our Eyes‘ is an opportunity to encourage greater respect and understanding of all cultures, especially Māori culture as artists are asked to interpret Matariki through their own eyes. Since its inception in 2010, the Matariki Art Exhibition has grown to become a popular annual event, bringing people of all cultures together and reflecting the multicultural diversity in the community. Also on display, are a variety of artwork, jewellery, kete, knitwear, photography, mosaic work and crafts from the arts and craft groups who meet weekly at the Onehunga Community Centre. Presented by Onehunga Community Centre.iton in July for the local community and arts and crafts groups.

Onehunga Security Update

For Security Help

Thanks to everyone who kept an eye out for the man who was suspected of breaking into vehicles. We thank the shop assistant who called this Monday to let us know he had come into her shop — as a result, the Police were able to come and further investigations have taken place. Theft of and from motor vehicles is becoming a real concern in Onehunga and we urge you to be vigilant when parking your car — do not leave any valuables inside. And if you do fall victim to car theft or a break-in, call 111 immediately and our security guard, Satia on 02 0401 13040. It‘s vital that you report any crime to the Police, even if you don‘t think it‘s very serious, it may be linked with other crimes. The Police reminds you not to be afraid to call 111—it doesn‘t have to be a life and death decision. If you observe an offence being committed or even suspect an offence is about to occur, please call 111—it is the most effective way to help reduce crime and victimisation. Constable Don Allan has alerted us to the fact that with school holidays there is often a rise in criminal activity and for you to be vigilant. To read his message click here : http://
