U.S. PRESIDENTS 1. James Monroe Privateer Signed Document. War–dated DS as secretary of state, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 7.75 x 7.5, no date but circa 1812. Printed State Department circular issued “by command of the President of the United States of America.” In part: “The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any vessels belonging to citizens of the United States coming from British ports to the United States laden with British merchandize, in consequence of the alledged repeal of the British Orders in Council, but are on the contrary to give aid and assistance to the same; in order that such vessels and their cargoes may be dealt with on their arrival as may be decided by the competent authorities.” In fine condition, with expected document wear, soiling to upper right, and a small hole below the heading. The US Congress declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, as the result of several diplomatic conflicts, including the British 'Orders in Council,' a series of decrees that restricted American trade with France. At the same time, the British were in the process of repealing the Orders in Council, which was finalized on June 23. Word of the repeal did not reach President James Madison until August 12, but he refused to halt hostilities because he did not know how Britain had reacted to the declaration of war. However, he did issue this instruction in response to the "alledged repeal," ordering naval and privateering ships to assist, rather than obstruct, any American-owned ships bringing British goods back to the United States, and that the cargo is to be dealt with on arrival. A fascinating presidential document from the country’s early days of naval warfare. Min Bid $200, EST: $700 and up
2. Abraham Lincoln Legal Brief. Handwritten endorsement at the bottom of a lightly-lined 7.75 x 6.25 page, “And the pl[ainti]ff doth the like—Pearson & Lincoln p.q.,” dated April 1832. Legal brief regarding the case of Metcalf vs. Bennett in which the defendant, through his attorney Cooper, claims that he is “not guilty of the said supposed several trespasses,” as alleged in Lincoln’s handwritten endorsement at the conclusion. Two horizontal folds, with small old tape repairs to both on reverse, a bit of scattered mild toning and foxing, and a small brush to end portion of text, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a complete typescript from the Lincoln Library in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, This document was originally a part of the Henry E. Luhrs collection. This case was among the very last that Lincoln addressed before being called to arms as a captain in the Illinois Militia. On April 5, 1832, nearly 1,000 Black Hawk Indian warriors and civilians crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois in an attempt to reclaim their land. In defense of the state, the 23-year-old Lincoln, who had recently announced his candidacy for the Illinois House of Representatives, responded to the governor's call for volunteer militia. Luhrs, one of the former owners of this document, was a well-known collector from the 1930s to 1960 who purchased items from the most famed autograph dealers of the day. A Beleaguered postmaster. In this unpublished letter, Congressman Johnson sheds fresh light on post office politics of the 19th century. While still a senator Johnson was instrumental in winning Lowry appointment as postmaster in the East Tennessee town of Greenville, where Johnson had settled in 1826.Lowry enjoyed his position until the Whigs in 1849 returned to presidential office, meant that his tenure was endangered. By then however Johnson was in the U.S. House to defend the interest of his friend in the Greenville post office. Here is where Johnson writes about his efforts to outwit his Whig enemies:" Since writing
you before Mr. Jno Bell[Whig Leader in Tennessee] at the instance of Wm. D. Williams [a Greenville Whig Merchant and political foe of Johnson] has made a move for your expulsion from office-Warren the 2nd assistant this moment informed me of the fact, and informed me that nothing would be done till the P M Genereal has an interview with me on the subject, which will be this morning-" Johnson confides his strategy in this meeting with the postmaster General Collamer:"I intend to have Bell present if possible-the PMG does not in my opinion to make a removal at all but if they determine to make one hazards, I will try and defeat Vance[David G. Vance, a Greenville innkeeper]-if the thing is done by Bell will be the responsible man..."Johnson plan worked temporally until later when President Fillmore got in office and appointed a new Postmaster General, who wanted to do a clean sweep. Morgenthau and Roosevelt had been friends since 1913 and had served together in New York state government before FDR was elected president. Even though Morgenthau, an orthodox economist, was a controversial choice for Treasury Secretary in 1934, he was loyal to Roosevelt and the New Deal and retained his office until 1945. His son, Robert M. Morgenthau, is currently District Attorney of New York County.

Leggett Writes Important Letter from Shilo )Mortimer Dormer Leggett (April 19, 1821 – January 6, 1896) Professor, and major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War. Autograph letter signed, Field of Shiloh, Tennessee, 30 April 1862. Written just weeks after the famous battle of Shiloh in which he commanded his regiment, Leggett writes a about the future movements in part”we have got orders to move at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning to our great, and I hope last struggle in this wicked war. The order requires us to take six day's provisions and 200 rounds of ammunition, this means work & blood. How many of our noble army will be left to eat their six days rations, God only knows. In the great movement to begin tomorrow, Gen. Buel's Army of 60,000 will compose the center, Gen. Grant's of 40,000 the right-wing, and Gen. Ropes of 30,000 the left wing… marching of such an immense number of men in the face of an equally large number for the purpose of blood-shed & slaughter is not in harmony with a fiber of my nature, I can but think of the ten thousand loving wives and fifty thousand dependent children who would be left widowed & fatherless by a clash of but few hours of such contending hosts. Gracious Heaven what awful crime must be set to the charge of this heartless & devilish rebellion! …..Thank God that my home has long been with a people that love free institutions.” …I frequently find it difficult to refrain from joining in the wild scream of my men. What must be the lasting permanent effect of such scenes & conflicts upon the hearts of those who survive to reach their homes? …From your Friend, M.D. Leggett

Publisher's black cloth with titles in red and gilt. Top edge stained red. Slight toning to endpapers and page edges. Dust jacket is lightly toned on edges. A beautiful copy in fine condition. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts and lives of all black men and women....I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people I saw every day, have I found myself so moved....Her portrait is a biblical study of life in the midst of death." (James Baldwin)
published in 1931 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1932. The best-selling novel in the United States in both 1931 and 1932 was an influential factor in Buck's winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.This is a rare Typed and Signed quotation from this important work. “Then mourning and weeping loudly they went to the graves, the laborers and Ching following and walking and wearing white shoes. And Wang Lung stood beside the two graves. He had caused the coffin of O-lan to be brought from the temple and it was put on the ground to await the old man’s burial first. And Wang Lung stood and watched and his grief was hard and dry, and he would not cry out loud as others did for there were no tears in his eyes, because it seemed to him that what had come about was come about, and there was nothing to be done more than he had done. But when the earth was covered over and the graves smoothed, he turned away silently and he sent away the chair and he walked home alone with himself. And out of his heaviness there stood out strangely but one clear thought and it was a pain to him, and it was this, that he wished he had not taken the two pearls from O-lan that day when she was washing his clothes at the pool, and he would never bear to see Lotus put them in her ears again. Thus thinking heavily, he went on alone and he said to himself, “There in that land of mine is buried the first good half of my life and more. It is as though half of me were buried there, and now it is a different life in my house.” And suddenly he wept a little, and he dried his eyes with the back of his hand, as a child does. The Good Earth” “ Pearl S. Buck”

113. Rare AMQS by Poet Sam Walter Foss. Rare AMQS by the poet Sam Walter Foss, from his work known as the” Side of the Road”. Foss (June 19, 1858 February 26, 1911) was an American librarian and poet whose best known works included The House by the Side of the Road and The Coming American. On Summerville Public Library letterhead, titled "The House by the Side of the Road", signed "Sam Walter Foss", dated "Dec. 19, 1899". “Let me live in my house by the side of the road Where the race of men go by- They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong, Wise, foolish- so am I. Then why should I sit in the scorner’s seat Or hurl the cynic’s ban?Let me live in my house by the side of the road And be a friend to man Sincerely Yours, Sam Walter Foss” For many years the opening lines from Foss's The Coming American ("Bring me men to match my mountains / Bring me men to match my plains / Men with empires in their purpose / And new eras in their brains") were inscribed on a granite wall at the United States Air Force Academy to inspire cadets and officers, but they were removed in 2003 to harmonize in perception to the Air Force Academy's having become coeducational. These words are currently engraved and displayed at Epcot in Orlando, Florida and at the south end of the Jesse M. Unruh Building near the State Capitol building in Sacramento, CA. These opening lines are inscribed onto the Rocky Mountain Cup trophy, which is contested annually between MLS teams Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids. Longtime baseball announcer Ernie Harwell alluded to Foss's The House by the Side of the Road whenever he described a batter taking a called third strike: "He stood there like the house by the side of the road and watched it go by." Surrounded Islands (Project for Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida), 1983.Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude were a married couple who created environmental works of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were born on the same day, June 13, 1935; Christo in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, and Jeanne-Claude in Morocco. They first met in Paris in October 1958. They then fell in love through creating art work together.Jeanne-Claude died, aged 74, on November 18, 2009, from complications of a brain aneurysm.Although their work is visually impressive and often controversial as a result of its scale, the artists have repeatedly denied that their projects contain any deeper meaning than their immediate aesthetic impact. The purpose of their art, they contend, is simply to create works of art for joy and beauty and to create new ways of seeing familiar landscapes. Art critic David Bourdon has described Christo's wrappings as a "revelation through concealment."[3] To his critics Christo replies, "I am an artist, and I have to have courage ... Do you know that I don't have any artworks that exist? They all go away when they're finished. Only the preparatory drawings, and collages are left, giving my works an almost legendary character. I think it takes much greater courage to create things to be gone than to create things that will remain."CHRISTO (American, b. 1935). Aviation History - Harry Lyons Trans-Pacific Flight Archive A COLLECTION OF MATERIAL RELATED TO HARRY LYON, NAVIGATOR ON BOARD THE SOUTHERN CROSS, THE FIRST TRANSPACIFIC FLIGHT Agreement of Service. 3 page carbon typescript contract signed Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm and Harry Lyon, 9 May 1928. the original contract to engage lyon as navigator for the southern cross. — City of Oakland Resolution in recognition of Lyon's service on the TransPacific expedition, signed by the mayor with seal attached, 10 June, 1928. — Autograph Letter Signed from Charles Kingsford Smith to Harry Lyon, 2 October 1930, on his recovery from illness, a future solo flight to Australia and his 31 1/2 hour Atlantic flight from Ireland to New York. — Palace Hotel Banquet invitation honoring Lyon and radio operator James Warner, by the Citizens of San Francisco. — Group of original and press photographs showing the plane, crew and crowds greeting the flight. — Clippings and ephemera. Crewed by Australian pilot and co-pilot Charles Kingford Smith and Charles Ulm respectively, with Americans as navigator (Harry Lyon) and radio-engineer (James Warner), the Trans-Pacific expedition was an international affair backed by philanthropist Allan Hancock. On 31 May, 1928, The Southern Cross took off from Oakland, California and began a treacherous 7,250 mile journey to mainland Australia. The heavily modified Fokker monoplane, previously outfitted for Arctic endurance flights, stopped for refueling in Hawaii and Fiji, where their arrival was greeted by crowds celebrating the first aircraft to land on the island. The leg from Fiji was 34 hours over the open Pacific, during which time the plane was in near constant contact by radio, making it the first successful use of radio on a long distance flight. The Southern Cross at last touched down in Queensland on the 9 June, completing the first successful flight from the mainland United States to Australia The crew's pioneering aviation achievement made them instant celebrities during a Golden Age of aviation exploration. The later disappearances, on separate expeditions, of both Smith and Ulm, contributes to the scarcity of material related to this landmark of aviation.

The title of the show was a play on the "loveins" or "be-ins" of the 1960s hippie culture, terms that were, in turn, derived from "sit-ins", common in protests associated with civil rights and antiwar demonstrations of the time.In 2002, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In was ranked number 42 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. This genuine Flying Fickle Finger of Fate award was used on the show in the recurring segment that "lauded" noteworthy, dubious achievements by celebrities or government officials. Recipients of this uncoveted award included then Los Angeles Chief of Police Ed Davis, who suggested that gallows be put in all airports so hijackers could be hung on the spot; the City of Cleveland for their Cuyahoga River (it caught fire due to its high pollution levels); William F. Buckley for his philosophy "Never clarify tomorrow what you can obscure today"; and the Pentagon, a five-time winner of the Nifty Knuckle.
