Daniel Boone Surveys Kentucky

1. Daniel Boone. Autograph DS, one page, 6.5 x 8, November 23, 1784. Boone confirms receipt of a payment for surveying work in Fayette County, Kentucky. In part: “Rec’d ... of Charles Patterson sixty six shillings, for the purpose of surveying & clearing out a entry by him made by me in Fayatt [sic] county for five thousand six hundred & twenty five acre land.” Attractively double-suede-matted and framed with a portrait and engraved biographical plaque to an overall size of 31 x 18. In very good condition, with intersecting folds with tiny holes at intersections (not affecting the signature), a few small edge tears, and a couple stray marks of ink. An especially important date within the context of Boone’s biography, November, 1784, marked the release of The Discovery, Settlement and Present State of Kentucky by John Filson, which included a chronicle of Boone’s adventures exploring Kentucky and during the American Revolution. This document is Signed By the Receiver General Andrew Elliot. The document is The General Account of His Majestyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Quit Rents for the Province of New York. Covers the period from September 29, 1766 until September 29, 1767 and details rents paid by each county on New York lands to the Crown. Payments made on the Kings warrants by the Commissioners of the Treasury are detailed. the counties and cities listed areâ&#x20AC;? Moses Hockett, b 22 Oct 1770, He moved from North Carolina to Ohio, Tennessee, and finally Indiana. In Good Condition and has been loosely framed. 9. William Henry Harrison. Ninth President of the United States (1841), 10. James Polk. Autographed Letter Signed as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee. Two pages, 8” x 10”, Columbia, Tennessee, August 20, 1834. Ten years before his election as the eleventh president, James Polk writes to Peter Hagner, Third Auditor, Treasury Department, in Washington concerning the request of the wife of a U.S. soldier, uncertain whether or not her husband is dead. In part: “The widow of Ambrose Witt states that her husband enlisted in the year 1813 in the army of the U. States for the term of five years. She states that he enlisted in Rowan County, North Carolina in Capt. Hartin’s company who belonged to Col. Wilburn’s Regiment, and she remembers that one of the Majors of the Regiment was named Taylor. She states that her husband was marched with the troops to the North. Min Bid $300

an American military officer and politician, and the first president to die in office. Harrison died on his 32nd day in office of complications from pneumonia, serving the shortest tenure in United States presidential history. Manuscript DS, signed at the conclusion “Wm H. Harrison A. d. C.” one page 6.75 x 3.75, 1794. Military provision, in full, ordering two days of rations for a party of three men belonging to Fort Recovery in Ohio, now at Greeneville Ohio, for their return commencing the 16th and ending the 17th of Feb 1794. Central horizontal and vertical folds and a rough right edge, otherwise fine condition with an excellent, bold signature. Harrison became aide-decamp to General ‘Mad Anthony’ Wayne in 1793 and fought in the Indian Wars that began on June 30, 1794. He also took part in an expedition that erected Fort Recovery on the battlefield where St. Clair had been defeated two years earlier. In 1813, he defeated the British and Indians in the Battle of the Thames, in which Tecumseh was killed. Min Bid $300

11. James K. Polk Signed “Executive Documents”. 11th president of The United States, Rare “Executive Documents” The House of Representatives at The First Session of the Twenty-Second Congress, Volume VI” signed book, 1831-33. This book was signed by Polk during Andrew Jacksons Presidency. In August 1833, after being elected to this fifth term, Polk became the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. The book is in very good condition, signed books by Polk are quite uncommon and this one is a fantastic addition to any signed presidential book collection. Min Bid $500

12th President of the U.S. ALS from Bayou Sara Nov. 17, 1841. Here Taylor writes to a merchant firm (Maunsel White) in New Orleans. He has arrived at his plantation from Arkansas and will be in New Orleans by the 24th, “and where at that time I would like to see Col. White; of which please to advise him if on his sugar plantation so as to afford him an opportunity of coming to the city if within his power to do so.” With a separate address leaf completed in Taylor’s hand. Wax seal remnants. Also included in this superb lot is a fine engraving of Taylor “at the period of his command in Mexico.” In Arkansas he was in command of the second department of the western division of the army at Fort Smith. He sold his Louisiana property a month after writing this letter. Min Bid $300

Buchanan Studies The Constitution 15. James Buchanan, Rare Signed Constitutional Law Book. 15t President of the U.S. Book “Constitutional Law” boldly signed at the top of the title page. It is also signed by his niece, Harriet Lane Johnston, who served as hostess during Buchanan’s term as president. When he died in 1868 she inherited his library. She signs here “H. L. Johnston 1868”. On page 313 he has written an extensive note, and on the last page, which was blank, he has penned 240 words concerning roads and canals. The book is internally sound, but the board covers are present but loosely attached only by tape. The book itself is enclosed in a handsome display box constructed by a previous owner. The cover of that box also is held on by tape. Buchanan’s loyalty to the constitution was of the United States was unbounded, and he was known to have used it to guide all of his public acts. Buchanan’s library was small, so his books are scarce. A president’s book on constitutional law is highly desirable, especially with the lightly notes contained within. Min Bid $500

BUCHANAN, JAMES, 15th President of the U.S. DS as President. On January 20, 1858, Buchanan directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the U.S to the envelope of a letter addressed to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Nicaragua accrediting Mr. Mirabeau B. Lamar as Minister Resident of the United States. Lamar had previously served as the second president of the Republic of Texas. Min Bid $100

ABRAHAM, Lincoln. Early Autograph Document Signed “Logan & Lincoln pltfs.”, 8 x 7 1/2”, “Sangamon Circuit Court”, dated March 11, 1841, a plea in the case of James maxwell jr. vs. Allen& Stone(whom Lincoln defends). The parties agree that this case shall be dismissed at the defendants cost March 11th 1841. Lincoln & Logan for pltfs.” Lincoln had been admitted to practice law in the U.S. Circuit Court only two years earlier, and he would split with Logan in 1844, taking William Herndon as his junior partner. A fine example. CONDITION IMPORTANT: The previous owner laminated the document for its protection. Min Bid $300

17th President of the U.S. ALS from Blountville, Tennessee July the 24th 1845. Full page 10 ½ x 8”. Integral address leaf addressed in Johnson’s hand to the Commissioner of Pensions in Washington City, D.C., bearing Johnson’s free frank (signed A. Johnson) as a member of Congress. He is here seeking help for a constituent, who has not been receiving the pension payments due him. Johnson recites the facts in detail with great clarity. He states, “Your early attention to this matter will confer a great favor upon this old man.” He signs “A. Johnson”. A small piece of paper is missing, affecting part of two words. This lot includes a ticket to Johnson’s impeachment trial May 11, 1868 – faded but legible. Min Bid $200

An exceedingly rare and historic picture of a group of people (included these four) seated on a platform. The image is 6 X 8” mounted to 10 x 8” on board. Some of the other people on the stand who did not sign are John W. Griggs (attorney general), Ethan Hitchcock (secretary of the interior), O. D. Seavey (manager of the Ponce de Leon Hotel), Elizabeth P. Griggs, and Princess Elizabeth Huntington Prentice. In fine condition other than missing part of the mount, in the lower left hand corner. During his tenure as vice president from 1897 to 1899, Hobart’s wife frequently performed the duties of First Lady as Ida Saxton McKinley suffered from epilepsy. Such was not the case here, however, as both Mrs. McKinley and Mrs. Garret joined their husbands on the dais. One of the McKinleys’ friends and the president’s closest confidants and advisers at a time when the vice president held virtually no real authority, Hobart died of heart failure in 1899. An unusual document pertaining to the ownership of a park in Flushing, Queens that had been acquired in 1912 by the City of New York. At the time of purchase, the City was not aware of the ownership and instead placed the sum of $15,200 in escrow pending identification. As it turned out, F.D.R.’s father, James Roosevelt was a part owner of the parcels identified in the depositions as “Damage Parcels Nos. 1, 2, and 3” and today is known as Leavitt’s Park. codicils together with two original, The first is a typed D.S.”Franklin D. When British General Burgoyne surrendered with his men, it was Goodwin who commanded the troops assigned to guard the important prisoner. It was during this detail that Goodwin came into possession of Burgoyne’s sword. Smith: one page, 8 x 6, October 30, 1896. A certificate of discharge issued to T. Riley a fireman aboard the S.S. Majestic. The document states Riley served aboard the vessel from October 7-28, 1896, and was discharged in Liverpool. Printed near the bottom is a certification statement which reads, •1 certify that the above particulars are correct and that the above named Seaman was discharged accordingly, and that the character described hereon is a true copy of the Report concerning the said Seaman.” Signed at the conclusion of the statement by Smith as the vessel’s master, and countersigned by a shipping representative. The discharge also bears two “V.G.” stamps in areas for character of conduct and ability. Sir Henry Irving, (born Feb. 6, 1838, Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, Eng.—died Oct. 13, 1905, Bradford, Yorkshire), one of the most famous of English actors, the first of his profession to be knighted (1895) for services to the stage. He was also a celebrated theatre manager and the professional partner of the actress Ellen Terry for 24 years. This is truly an amazing document. The art work of a cab driver with horse and the calligraphy throughout is done in hand with multi colors ink and even gold leaf to embellish the beautiful presentation to Sir Henry Irving for his support to the “Cab Drivers of London”. The document was given the same month that Sire henry Irving became the first in his profession to be knighted by the Queen Victoria. The document is housed in a hand made wood frame in the shape of a Horse shoe. The document reads in part: Cab drivers benevolent Association had a meeting of the committee held at 15 Soho Sq. W. on the 5 July 1895 Major Grimston in the chair it was Unanimously Resolved that this committee desire to return their sincere and heartfelt thanks to Sir Henry Irving for his great kindness in presiding at the festival winter held in the Whitehall rooms on the Saturday the 15 June 1895 and to place on record their admiration of the graceful eloquence with which he pleaded the cause of the cabdrivers of London and their gratitude for his earnest and sympathetic advocacy which resulted in so large increase to the funds of the association. This handwritten and signed letter with Dickens’ distinctive signature features his usual elaborate paraph. It is marked private on top. Labeled Wednesday night it is believed this letter is from Dickens when he was the editor of the Daily News a paper her started in about 1845. The letter is a little cryptic but does refer to a letter and situation with a Mr. Danson and Thomas Hodgskin one of his writers who he recruited for his newly formed Newspaper. This letter might relate to a specific situation where Hodgskin felt undermined by his editor Dickens, when he passed over for a leader column by another editor a John Towne Danson the financial editor, based on this and other clashes, Dickens did give up his role as editor shortly thereafter. A Rare Signed Work of Stephen Crane, On His Short Story, The Wise Men Stephen Crane was one of America’s great realistic writers, and his works have been credited with marking the beginning of modern American Naturalism. His Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895) is a classic of American literature that virtually every schoolchild reads. Tragically, Crane died young at the age of 29, and his autograph is extremely uncommon. In 1898, a limited edition, hard copy book, entitled “The Lanthorn Book,” was published for members of the Lanthorn Club in New York. It contained stories from contemporary authors, among them Crane, who contributed his work, “The Wise Men.” Only 125 copies were printed, and of those a handful survive. Crane signed them. 122. Auguste Rodin. A wonderful handwritten letter, in French, on French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s personal stationery. The letter is dated June 20, 1911. Rodin writes in part: “ ... Your dear friendship is precious to her Grace the Duchess and myself. think that we have some visits for tomorrow, but if you can invite us in a few days, we will be happy to be with you ... Auguste Rodin.” The year that this letter was written was an important one for Rodin as it was then that the Rodin Museum In Paris was founded. Lovely presentation in cream moire hand wrapped silk and framed in pewter with an archival photograph of the artist. A full museum conservation framing has been employed to preserve and protect this piece. Rodin, Auguste (1840 - 1917) French sculptor, often considered the greatest of his day. Through his work he freed sculpture from the idealizing conventions of the time by his realistic treatment of the human figure, introducing a new boldness of style and expression. Examples are “Le Penseurffhe Thinker” 1880, “Le Baiserffhe Kiss “1886 (marble version in the Louvre, Paris), and “Les Bourgeois de Calaisffhe Burghers of Calais” 1884-1886 (copy in Embankment Gardens, Westminster, London). Edouard Baldus (June 5, 1813, Grünebach, Prussia – 1889, Paris) was a French landscape, architectural and railway photographer who exceeled in panorama’s and landmark photography. By 1855, Baldus had established a reputation as the leading architectural photographer in France, and his pictures drew much public attention and critical notice at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris. This Large album “Vues de Paris en Photographie”, ca.1860 has 60 albumen prints by Baldus. All on original mounts and with Baldus’ signature stamp at bottom right below each image, mounted on guards at left edge, contemporary embossed cloth, upper cover gilt-lettered as above. A booklet of documents, stapled at top, regarding a ‘Request for Homologation of World Record’; this was a submission of documentation, along with witnesses, correspondence, and responses, in order to procure a World Record standing, specifically regarding an altitude with a useful load of 1,000 kilograms on a flight by a Lieutenant Rutledge Irvine on April 17th, 1923. Documentation includes a signed typed letter (TLS) from Orville Wright, who was an observer of the record flight. Documentation submitted on behalf of Irvine by the National Aeronautic Association of the U.S. to the French Aeronautique Internationale, or F.A.I., the world governing body on flight records. Dozen or so documents and letters range in size from letter (8”X1 0”) to legal sized (8”x13”), with booklet itself measuring 9”x13”. Booklet has some wear and tear, but letters inside in decent shape, and the Wright letter is superb. Fascinating historical collection of original documents regarding an early flight World Record. Hill (April 26, 1896[1] – May 1, 1973)was an American aviation pioneer who served in the military in both world wars Born in New London, Connecticut, Hill attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army’s infantry on August 9, 1917, and promoted to first lieutenant on the same day.After serving in France during World War I, he was transferred to the Air Service on February 25, 1922. He was a free and captive balloon pilot, flew dirigible airships and was an airplane pilot. In 1924, he was the pilot of the first airship to launch and pick up an airplane while in flight, at Wilbur Wright Field. His 1928 balloon license (number 25; FAI number 930) was one of very few signed by Orville Wright, in his capacity as Chairman of the National Aeronautic Association’s Contest Committee. He was commander of Bolling Field in Washington DC from 1939-1941, then of U.S. Air Forces in Northern Ireland, and the Eighth Air Force Composite Command during World War II. ORIGINAL 1937 SNOW WHITE & SEVEN DWARFS COMIC ARTWORK 125. Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. Hank Porter (1900 ? -1951) joined the Disney studio in 1935. He was assigned to the Disney Publicity studio and was responsible for producing a wealth of materials: art for the monthly Disney feature for Good Housekeeping Magazine (taking over from Tom Wood, after his passing in 1940), ad pieces, theatre posters, covers for the earlier issues of Dell’s Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories, magazine covers for various publishers that ran Disney articles, including the long-running Mickey Mouse Magazine (he did interior work for this title, as well), and design art for toy makers. Porter assembled Disney’s group of illustrators created the many squadron patch designs for the various WWII U. S. military units that requested them, with Porter himself proving to be the most prolific. Hank Porter was also the artist selected to create the art for the Sunday funnies pages that introduced Snow White and Pinocchio, just before each film’s official release. Think about that for a moment, as that would mean that Porter’s interpretations were the first real view that the world ever had of Disney’s first two full-length animated features. Porter didn’t design the characters, but he captured the studio’s versions of the characters precisely, including the scenery designs of the great Gustav Tenggren. Hank Porter, the great workhorse for Disney’s Publicity Studio, retired in 1950. He passed away in 1951. Disney Publicity artist Hank Porter’s comic strip adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs debuted in late 1937 and continued into 1938, completing the movie’s tale. The five unsigned penciled Porter pieces that we are offering here are tightly executed layouts, done in standard pencil as separate tiers (three tiers made up a weekly installment). These would have been transferred to the finished art page which then received ink to make it camera ready. All five of these represent one tier from five different weekly installments, beginning with the eighth installment where Snow first met the dwarfs (when the seven little men are first seen in silhouette). Each is drawn on a 31” x 7-1/4” sheet of lightweight illustration paper that has been archival mounted into a thick protective matte. Installments: #8 - bottom tier (1/2” vertical tear in blank first panel - 1st view of the cottage and the dwarfs marching in a silhouetted line over a fallen log bridge); #12 center tier (vertical center crease, and age spots and chipping on far right edge - dwarfs argue whether Snow should stay with them or not); #13 top tier (release date March 6, 1938 - reflattened vertical centerfold - argument continues from the previous week); #14 center tier (reflattened vertical centerfold - the Old Woman with the apple! - the dwarfs dive into Snow’s prepared dinner); and #15 bottom tier (dwarfs let Snow have their bedroom, then they go to sleep in the kitchen). 164. 1853 $1 Banking House of Baldwin & Dodge, Council Bluffs, Iowa VF Condition. The banking and land agency was formed by John T. Baldwin and G.M. Dodge in Jan. 1856. Within a few years their brothers ended up assuming and running the business. These notes circulated when small bills and silver had all but disappeared from the area in the late 1850s. The situation was relieved when the State Bank of Iowa came into existence in 1859. 169. Miriam Makeba Signed Program. Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist. In the 1960s, she was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music around the world. She is best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. She recorded and toured with many popular artists, such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and her former husband Hugh Masekela. Makeba campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. The South African government responded by revoking her passport in 1960 and her citizenship and right of return in 1963. 230. Bonanza. Choice lot featuring trio of signed documents featuring the stars of the classic westem television show “Bonanza”: Michael Landon, Dan Blocker and Lome Greene. First up is a three-page document. 8.5” x 11”, dated December 30, 1959, NBC Letterhead, in which Blocker to amendments to his contract for “Bonanza”. The document is signed at the conclusion by Blocker in blue ballpoint pen along with an NBC executive and stands in overall fine condition. From Michael Landon we have a two-page agreement between Landon and NBC for terms to an unspecified contract. June 2, 1982, signed at the conclusion by Landon in blue ballpoint pen. The document is in overall fine condition. Lastly, we have a two-page television appearance agreement, 8.5” x 11”, July 25, 1969, in which Greene agrees to appear on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the sum of $3,250. This Original contract dated November 18th, 1959, is between Peter Lawford and his manger Milton Ebbins for the Motion Picture Photo Play "Oceans 11" and is signed by both. The contract basically stipulates the percentage compensation Milton will receive in regards to "Ocean 11" movie. There are 5 other ancillary documents accompanying the contract as well as an original promotional 11 dollar bill with Lawford's photo and a newspaper clipping about the movie. Lawford bought the rights to the movie in 1958. The contract and related paperwork are in fine condition and came directly from Lawford's estate. Ocean's 11 is a 1960 heist film directed by Lewis Milestone and starring five Rat Packers: Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Joey Bishop.Centered on a series of Las Vegas casino robberies, the film's other stars included Angie Dickinson, Cesar Romero, Richard Conte, Akim Tamiroff, Henry Silva, Ilka Chase, Norman Fell, Harry Wilson and Buddy Lester, as well as cameo appearances by Shirley MacLaine, Red Skelton, and George Raft. 256. Original Unused Woodstock Ticket. On August 15-17, 1969, the village of Bethel, NY (with a normal population of 5000) became the third largest city in the state. In a time of war, demonstrations, riots, racial and social unrest, over 400,000 young people from across the nation would converge on Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm for three days of peace, love and music. Many parked as far as 10 miles away. Some were called flower children, hippies, or yippies ... some just wanted to party (before being called to war) ... others were just curious. But they would show the world that people of all races, creeds, religions and social backgrounds could co-exist without violence. As the hordes began crossing the security fences, it became a free concert featuring 31 of the biggest bands and performers of the time. Fleming’s signature on lower left in black and Ferrar’s signature top right in blue their are over 17 autographs on the cover. Ferrar won a Tony for directing Stalig 17, and Fleming , who played McKay in Stalig and was best known as the trail boss Gil Favor on the popular TV series Rawhide, is quite scarce.
