AMAZING 4PG JOHN QUINCY ADAMS LETTER DECIPHERING SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET

“I look upon the Tragedy of Hamlet as the Master Piece of Drama-: The Master Piece of Shakespeare-I had almost said the Master Piece of the Human mind.”

“Hamlet is the personification of Man. in the prime of life. with a mind cultivated by the learning acquirable at an University, combining intelligence and sensibility, in their highest degree, within a step of the highest station attainable upon earth, crushed to extinction by the pressure of calamities inflicted not by nature but against naturesnot by physical but by moral evil.” John Quincy Adams. 6th President of the U.S. Wonderful Autograph Letter Signed, Four pages, Quarto, from Washington, dated February 19, 1839, written to renowned actor and Shakespearean scholar “James H Hackett, Esq., New York”. Hackett (the first U.S. actor to appear abroad in 1826 when he performed at Covent Garden) was so proud of this letter he received from Adams that he actually hired a London lithographer to make copies of it. Some of the lithograph copies can be found in institutions like the Folger Shakespeare Museum, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL handwritten letter. Adams pens (in part 1st page of 4): “Dear Sir, James H. Hackett Esq., New York Washington, Feb 7, 1839 Dear Sir I return herewith your Tragedy of Hamlet with many thanks for the perusal of your manuscript notes, which indicate how thoroughly you have delved into the bottomless mine of Shakespeare’s genius. I well remember the conversation more than seven years by gone, at Mr. Philip Hone’s hospitable table, where at the casual introduction of the name of Hamlet the Dane, my enthusiastic admiration of the inspired (muse inspired) Bard of Avon commenced in childhood before the down had darkened my lip, and continued, through five of the seven ages of the drama of life, ………imagination, seduced me to expatiate at a most intellectual and lovely convivial board, upon my views of the character of Hamlet. until I came away ashamed of having engrossed an undue proportion of the conversation to myself…………….. I look upon the Tragedy of Hamlet as the Master Piece of Drama-The Master Piece of Shakespeare-I had almost said the Master Piece of the Human mind. But I have never committed to writing the analysis of the considerations upon which this deliberate judgment has been formed. At the table of Mr. Hone I could give nothing but outlines and etchings. I can give no more now, snatching as I do from the morning lamp, to commune with a lover and worthy Representative of Shakespeare upon the glories of the immortal bard. What is Tragedy? It is an imitative representation of human action and passion to the heart of the spectator, through the instrumentality of terror and pity. This, in substance, is the definition of Aristotle; and Pope’s most beautiful lines, in the prologue to Cato, are but an expansion of the same idea. ………………….. Fascinating insight into arguably the most revered and complex fictional character of all time. John Quincy Adams penned this in-depth analysis of Hamlet while he was serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The content clearly exhibits Adams’ renowned intellect and passion for the arts……………..

LINCOLN SIGNS AN AUTOGRAPH REQUEST, DATED JULY 13, 1860

This is a LS by Lincoln answering a request from William H. Adams. The letter is dated “July 2nd, 1860” from Springfield, IL. Lincoln responds to an autograph request: ”Dear Sir, Herewith I send you my autograph which you request. Yours Truly,” Lincoln signed at the bottom, “A. Lincoln” in black ink. The letter is in the hand of Lincoln’s future White House Secretary, John Hay. Comes with the original price tags from NYC’s B. Altman & Company and original owner, Goodspeeds Book Shop. BACKGROUND: In 1847, Lincoln was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. During his single term, Lincoln spoke out against the Mexican War and slavery. After switching allegiance to the new Republican Party in 1856, Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate against Stephen A. Douglas. Although Lincoln lost, the race attracted national attention because of the candidates widely reported debates over the issue of slavery in the territories. Lincoln’s standing was further enhanced on February 27, 1860, when, in New York City, before an influential audience, he delivered his brilliant Cooper Union speech. Here he argued that the Federal government had the power to limit slavery in the territories. On July 2, a degree of LL.D. was conferred on Lincoln by Knox College. Later that same month the Republicans nominated Lincoln for the Presidency on the third ballot at the convention in Chicago. The Democratic Party split into Northern and Southern factions, each with its own Presidential candidate. Lincoln’s election the following November, over three other candidates, with only 40% of the popular vote, was unacceptable to Southerners. It became the pretext for first South Carolina and in quick order 10 other states to secede from the Union. 5.25 inches by 2.75 inches, Excellent Condition. Light toning, with signature mounted to a larger sheet.

Hoover sends as a favor of an Ed Anthony from the Boys Club to a Mr. Belding a very rare handwritten letter. Hoover himself conjectured that the only reason for a handwritten letter is to sell it at sometime for monetary gain. this letter shows a rare glimpse of Hoovers humor. Letter reads in part... Dear Mr. Belding, Ed Anthony transmits your request for a holographic letter for your collection. I receive tens of thousands of such request, the only purpose for a letter written of former president these days of typewriters that the receive or his executors may add them for their collection. The current price for such a letter in the market is $1000 . However, …. said letter in the market is worth about $1000 dollars. Therefore, I’m assuming you will remit this amount for the boys clubs of America. As I could get that amount for them by this exercise. in any event, this act is to mark my affection for Ed and The Boys Club do not get the $1000. I hope that when this letter gets into the dealer’s hands, that his whole stock and trade will catch on fire. Your Sincerely Herbert Hoover

106 EXTREMELY RARE ANDREA DORIA 1545 LETTER!

Rare Letter from the great Italian Naval leader Andrea Doria, dated October 9, 1545.Doria was the imperial admiral he commanded several expeditions against the Ottoman Empire, capturing Koronji and Patras, and co-operating with the emperor himself in the capture of Tuniss (1535). Charles found him an invaluable ally in the wars with Francis I, and through him extended his domination over the whole of Italy. He accompanied Charles V on the ill-fated Algiers expedition of 15411, of which he disapproved, and which ended in disaster. For the next five years he continued to serve the emperor in various wars, in which he was generally successful and always active, although now over seventy years old. This letter is addressed to Prince Frdinande Gonzaga (1497-1557) an endorsement of an reccomadation of Andronicio di Spinosa from someone who “did not want to miss the opportunity” to implore the Prince to find a position of command for Spinosa(Spinola) In the kingdom of Sicily. The second part of the letter could not be deciphered but is written by Doria addressed to the Prince...The document is signed by Doria as well at the end. According to the history there was along collaboration between the Gonzaga family and Andrea Dorea. In an earlier known letter from Francesco Gonzaga from Rome on May 29th 1526, to his father Federico Duke of Mantua and Marquis of Montscrratte) Franseco mentioned how he “performed the duty of a visit” to Pope Clemens Vll “ with M Andrea Doria”..In the letter Gonaga told how important Doria was to the pope who wanted a painting done of him(Doria) by Sebastiani. The letter appears to offer a glimpse of the diplomatic interplay of the time including the conduct of business and the subtleties of power. The uneven italic writing is attributed to Dorea which may be due to his condition of the nearly 80 year old ruler.

MARK DAVID CHAPMAN’S LETTERS TO POLICE OFFICER WHO ARRESTED HIM

The four missives from Mark David Chapman The letters are typed and signed by Chapman. They were written over several months in 1983, after he had pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Each letter is typed and signed by Chapman. They are dated form January 15,1983-May 31,1983 In the first letter, from Jan. 15, 1983, Chapman says his reason for writing, besides wanting to be Spiro’s friend, is to ask for help in locating his copy of “The Catcher in The Rye,” which he was reading at the time of his arrest. “Have you read `The Catcher in the Rye’ yet?” Chapman asks. “I would like you to read it and tell me what you think of it. As you remember, in the copy that was taken from me I had written `This is my statement.’” In one letter, Chapman said he’d let Spiro decide whether Lennon was a “phony” or not, a reference to troubled “Catcher in the Rye” narrator Holden Caulfield, who refers to people as “phonies” in the book, written by J.D. Salinger. Spiro said he re-read the novel on Chapman’s request. He also states that Spiro had said something Big was going to happen that night of the arrest, and wanted Spiro to recall if he said it and why. Chapman said that he believes that it is part of a phenomenon. Chapman, 57, was denied parole in August for the seventh time. During the hearing, he again expressed remorse for Lennon’s killing and spoke of his Christian faith.

SABINE BARING GOULD “FAMOUS HYMNAL POEM ‘ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS’

Autograph Manuscript Of His Famous Hymnal Poem ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’, signed at the end (‘S. Baring-Gould’), 40 lines in five eight-line stanzas, 1 page, folio. Framed with an incredible frame museum mounted. ‘Onward Christian Soldiers Marching as to War, With the Cross of Jesus Going on before...’ The hymn was written by the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould in 1865, when he was a curate at Horbury St Peter’s Church near Wakefield, Yorkshire. He scribbled the hymn down the night before a school Whit Day Festival for the children to sing as they walked. Little did he know that it would go on to become one of the best loved hymns in the English language Baring-Gould wrote the lyrics to the melody from the slow movement of Haydn’s Symphony No 15, but it was truly cemented in church tradition when Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan - wrote a new tune for the hymn in 1871.It was later taken up by The Salvation Army as a processional. The song has been used in many important occasions through the years from presidential funerals, to even when Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt met in 1941 on the battleship HMS Prince of Wales to agree the Atlantic Charter, a church service was held for which Prime Minister Churchill chose the hymns. He chose “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and afterwards made a radio broadcast explaining this choice. We sang “Onward, Christian Soldiers” indeed, and I felt that this was no vain presumption, but that we had the right to feel that we serving a cause for the sake of which a trumpet has sounded from on high. When I looked upon that densely packed congregation of fighting men of the same language, of the same faith, of the same fundamental laws, of the same ideals ... it swept across me that here was the only hope, but also the sure hope, of saving the world from measureless degradation. —Winston Churchill Extremely Rare can only find one other complete Handwritten and signed poem which sold for over $11,000 in Bonhams Auctions in London.

IMPORTANT, MARCEL LEPRIN PAINTING

This amazing Painting done by Marcel Leprin is 33”x25’. The scene is from Montmartre, France as you are transported to France in the late 20’s. The street scene winds up the hill to Basilica of Sacre-Coeur in the background. Leprin (1891-1933) was born in Cannes and brought up in Marseilles. Leprin was an orphan brought up by the Don Bosco Salesian monks, who noticed his gift for drawing and lithography. Leprin fancied taking up bullfighting in Barcelona, but was called up to serve in the First World War, which he somehow survived. After moving to Montmartre, he lived by selling paintings and pastel drawings to tourists. In 192dates form the around 1926.4 he signed an exclusive contract with Henri Bureau, a picture-framer living in Montmartre, who promoted his works. In 1926 Leprin travelled across France, painting numerous landscapes and village views. Despite considerable success at two exhibitions at the Druet gallery in 1928 and 1931, Leprin remained a solitary and depressive individual. He sought refuge in drink and drugs and died prematurely in 1933, The Marseilles period is largely made up of large decorative paintings; the Montmartre period is quite dark and commercial; and the period of his travels – reminiscent of Sisley and Pissarro – more warm and creative. Today, Leprin’s paintings can be found at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée Carnavalet, and the Musée de Montmartre – all in Paris – and in Switzerland at the Petit Palais de Genève. His paintings , especially of His Montmartre period are quite valuable.

JEAN DUBUFFET ORIGINAL DRAWING

Original Drawing. Original untitled drawing in black ink on a “Comodoro” envelope. Signed and dated, “Jean Dubuffet Oct. 1950.” Accomplished on an envelope from the ‘Comodoro’ Hotel, 4.25 x 9.5 inches. A small detailed work showing a man and womanseated on a bench at left, a second man in a top hat and carrying an umbrella, showing walking a dogunder a street lamp at the right. A characteristic work by the influential French artist whose idealisticapproach to aesthetics embraced so called “Art Brut” (“Raw Art” or “Low Art”) and eschewedtraditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanisticapproach to imagemaking.Around the time of this drawing, Dubuffet began his close friendship with the Cuban writer and editorSamuel Feijoo (1914 - 1992), Dubuffet calling him his “frere d’ame” (“soul mate”) and publishingsome of his drawings in the journal “Islas y Signos” founded by Feijoo in the late 1950s (SamuelFeijÔo: Dubuffet, in Islas IV, #2, January-June 1962, pp. 198-200). Dubuffet himself did not visitCuba during this period, though his dealer, Pierre Matisse, traveled to Cuba in 1948 to pick up worksby Wilfredo Lam and it is possible this envelope was obtained from the Havana ‘Comodoro’ Hotel atthat time and eventually made its way into Dubuffet’s hands.

He then signs it Buzz Aldrin Apollo 11, Lunar command module. The letter takes you on the mission in part..”I would like to share with you some of my personal experiences as one of the first two human beings to set foot on another world. In this letter I will describe some of the extraordinary events I experienced firsthand during mankind’s first landing on the moon In our descent to the lunar surface Neal and I were harnessed into the lunar module in a standing position. At the right moment we ignited the engines to begin the 12 minute power descent. Unexpectedly 6000 feet above the surface a caution light came on indicating a computer overload. We pushed on receiving three or forbore warnings on the way down. At 500 feet we saw that the landing area was strewn with rocks. So Neal and I quickly changed our trajectory and touchdown point. At 50 feet above the ground we descended through the dead man so this zone was critical height where engines failures occur we would’ve crashed into the surface of the moon.”

ROCKEFELLER ,FLAGLER AND GRISCOM SIGNED STANDARD OIL TRUST

Rockefeller formed the first oil trust at the age of 30. Ten years later he monopolized 85% of the industry and became the world’s first billionaire. He hated waste and inefficiency. As a result he would target poorly run segments of the industry. He would often drive poorly run competition out of business or buy them out. He became the most detested man in the country and had a bodyguard continuously around him. Rockefeller gave 3/4 of a billion dollars to science and education. In one of the 1st public relations campaigns in history, Rockefeller would give a shiny new dime to whomever he would meet. Rockefeller signs along with Henry M. Flagler, Capitalist and Promoter. ORIGINAL UNUSED WOODSTOCK TICKET

On August 15-17, 1969, the village of Bethel, NY (with a normal population of 5000) became the third largest city in the state. In a time of war, demonstrations, riots, racial and social unrest, over 400,000 young people from across the nation would converge on Max Yasgur’s 600 acre dairy farm for three days of peace, love and music. Many parked as far as 10 miles away. Some were called flower children, hippies, or yippies ... some just wanted to party (before being called to war) ... others were just curious. But they would show the world that people of all races, creeds, religions and social backgrounds could co-exist without violence. As the hordes began crossing the security fences, it became a free concert featuring 31 of the biggest bands and performers of the time. Through pouring rain, with inadequate food or water, medical or sanitation facilities, all would help their fellow man. It would create a moment that would change their lives as well as those of future generations. All would leave touched by the ...Woodstock Experience!
