5. Rare! Lincolns Last Photograph. [LINCOLN, Abraham]. WARREN, Henry F., photographer. Portrait photograph of Lincoln, taken on the south balcony of the White House, Washington, D.C., late afternoon, 6 March 1865. this is the large format: 6 x 8” on a 10 x 13 vignetted albumen photograph, on original card mount, imprint of “H.F. Warren Waltham Mass.,” with caption: “The Latest Photograph of President Lincoln. Taken on the Balcony of the White House, March 6, 1865.” “THE LATEST PHOTOGRAPH OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN”: TAKEN TWO DAYS AFTER THE SECOND INAUGURAL The is a rare photograph, of an important photographic portrait of the 16th President, an image that owes its existence to an unscrupulous strategem employed by the photographer. Warren, a Massachusetts photographer in Washington for the inauguration, very much hoped to get the opportunity to photograph the President. “He was not acquainted with the President and had

no connections in Washington. But he had a plan. Warren found out that Tad [the Lincolns’ young son] went riding on his pony every afternoon...He ambushed and ‘shot’ young Lincoln astride his pony and on the following afternoon delivered the prints to Tad. The boy was delighted by them. ‘Now,’ said Warren, ‘bring out your father and I will make a picture of him for you.’ Tad dashed off, and in a few minutes appeared on the south balcony of the White House with the President.” Lincoln, “posing just to please his son... appears preoccupied...” (Hamilton & Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs, pp.213-214). Indeed, in the wake of the inaugural ceremony, the inaugural ball (where he shook the hand of some 6,000 wellwishers) and other events, Lincoln might simply have been dead tired. The strong March wind on the balcony has noticeably ruffled Lincoln’s thick shock of hair. Although the photograph does have a water stain, it still is a rare photograph which displays well considering.

11. Tennyson Birthday Book Signed by Four Presidents and Many Other Notables. This delightful little book (5 x 3 1/2”) was published in London in 1883. Its name comes from the fact that it provides a calendar on which to record -birthdays and that on each page there are quotes from Tennyson’s poems. It,belonged to Antoinette Greely, who was the daughter of General Adolphus Washington Greely, the noted explorer and scientist. For at least 40 years, Antoinette collected the signatures of visitors to their home in the spaces provided for their birthdays. It read like a Who’s Who. Signers include four presidents (Cleveland, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Wilson), 2 vice-presidents, a first lady, a president’s daughter, a cabinet officer, a Supreme Court Chief Justice, a Speaker of the House, at least 8 generals and an admiral, a prominent Shakespearean actress, the very famous Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and a large number of diplomats, Senators, Congressmen, governors, college presidents, scientists, noted.clergymen, authors, et al. Most of those who signed have been identified. Antoinette’s hobby gives us considerable insight into what kind of a home the Greelys had. Her work now represents an interesting contribution to history. This is truly a unique item that is by itself a fine autograph collection.

It is the teachers and the students and the interrelationships between them. It is the teachers not the Library who are the organ of memory, distilling the knowledge of the past, and I knew many great teachers at Harvard who have patiently attempted to show their the enchantment of thought to young men ... as I studied for one term the eventual political extinguishment of an obscure junior Republican Congressman from upstate New York. But Prof. Holcombe’s greatest impact was not his vast erudition, but in personality and character. Dispassionate, reserved, self-restrained, without illusions but idealistic, .... He taught my father, and forty years later my younger brother, and to them, and to all, he set a standard to which in later life, they all could repair. ...One day he said to me after the 1946 election he said to me with cheerful pride, ‘I had the pleasure yesterday of voting for three of my former students, one for Senator, one for Governor & one for Congressman, and they were all elected.” Pages measures 8’’ x 10.5’’. HEAD OF STATE/ROYALTY

61. Francis Pizarro, conqueror of the Incan Empire. Spanish conquistador, conqueror of the Incan Empire, and founder of Lima, the modern-day capital of the Republic of Peru. Pizarro’s rubric, in ink, on an off-white 4 x 3 slip removed from a larger document. Notation in another hand under signature reads “Jauja—1534.” Several light vertical folds (one passing through a single stroke of the signature), horizontal fold under signature, a couple of small spots, and a few creases, otherwise fine condition. The composition of the signed slip identifies it as the type of paper used in 16th century Peru. Included for comparison is an unrelated 1574 Peruvian manuscript document penned on laid paper, granting the power of attorney to sell slaves. Other than being produced with a laid pattern, both the 1534 and 1574 sheets of paper are similarly composed of linen rag and hemp fiber, commonly used in 16th century Peru. Based on the added notation, this amazing ‘signature’ of the famed conquistador dates the item to shortly after April 1534, when Pizarro established Jauja as Peru’s provisional capital, a year before he founded Lima. As he was not fully literate and never learned to sign his name, he represented his signature on documents with a rubric—including the unique design on this scarce artifact. This particular Pizarro signature originated from a descendent of President John Adams, whose hobby was preserving family mementos and chronicling family history, and was part of a large collection passed down in the family. A 1536 power of attorney signed by Pizzarro sold for $97,500 at Christie’s in 2007—one of only two Pizarro documents to appear at auction in the last century.

Autograph Poem Signed, “Sam Houston,” likely as Senator, 1 page, 5.5” x 4.5”, [no place, no date], a four-line poem originally inscribed in a woman’s memory book. Light toning from previous matting, a few minor contemporary ink smudges, else very good to fine condition with a large, bold signature. Apart from his reputation as the hero of San Jacinto and founder of Texas, Houston was something of a romantic. Writing in an a hostess’ memory book, beneath the title “Texas” (accomplished in another hand), Houston writes in full: “Woman is lovely to the sight As gentle as the dews of even, As bright as mornings earliest light And spotless at the snows of Heaven.” Though undated, it is likely that Houston probably accomplished this poem during his years in Washington representing Texas in the U.S. Senate from 1846 to 1861. His biographer, Marquis James noted that during those years, Houston, “did not go about a great deal socially, although he was still a favorite of the type that ladies vaguely called ‘interesting.’” His romanticism led one commentator to predict that if Houston ever became President, he would fill his Cabinet with women who would boss him around. (James, The Raven, 1988, p. 380). This poem was published in Marquis James important biography, The Raven: A Biography of Sam Houston (1988), p. 380.

78. Extremely Rare Johns Hopkins ALS (Love letter to Cousin). Secret Love letter from the founder of Johns Hopkins University. There are only a few known examples of handwritten letters that exist by Johns Hopkins. This 2 page letter is in fine condition and is accompanied with the original envelope. Here is A love letter from the very private Johns Hopkins (Founder and Name sake of Johns Hopkins University and Hospital. What makes this extremely rare letter especially interesting is not only does Hopkins profess his love and “promises to take pleasure in pleasing” her he also tells her “Do not let anyone see this letter” the letter is to a cousin of his named Alverda E. Hopkins. It was known that Hopkins, had wanted to marry a cousin named Elizabeth who was the daughter of his uncle Gerard, who he met while working on his uncles farm at the age of 17, but was not allowed to marry based on the Quaker traditions. This letter was written to another cousin 50 years later at the age of 77. It is known that Hopkins, did burn all his personal letters and there are only a few letters that exist in his hand, but this is the first we are aware of with any personal feelings expressed. Maybe there was a reason why he did destroy all of his letters? This letter was also found with an interesting ledger, which could be of major importance to the beginning of Johns Hopkins business endeavors. It is known that Hopkins, broke away from his Uncle and started his own business, Hopkins partnered with three of his brothers and established Hopkins & Brothers Wholesalers in 1819. The company prospered by selling various wares in the Shenandoah Valley from Conestoga wagons, sometimes in exchange for corn whiskey, which was then sold in Baltimore as “Hopkins’ Best”. This ledger book dated in 1822 has many records, of cost which includes wagons, wheat, apples and other daily purchases and sales. The edger does seem to have also calculations and formulas to figure out cost and weights and more and possibly belonged to Lowe. What makes this ledger an interesting part of the puzzle is that it has from the period, Johns Hopkins name on the top of one of the pages as well as a Alfred Lowe and Alverda E Hopkins. These are the same names that Johns Hopkins sent the letter to. The envelope is addressed to Alverda E. Hopkins in care of Alfred Lowe. The ledger is about 20 pages and many of the pages have newspaper clippings form the period pasted on them. Underneath the clippings you can clearly see that there is handwriting. This is quite a puzzle deserves further research. Min Bid $500, EST: $5000 and up

Gambling that in exchange for his cooperation, the governor would not extradite him to Minnesota to stand trial for the infamous Northfield robbery he staged with his brother Jesse, Frank chose to stand trial for his role in several murders and robberies in Missouri. 85. The Beecher/Tilton scandal Letter and original Poem. This is an important letter and original Poem related to The Beecher/Tilton scandal which achieved such prominence in the national press that by some accounts it eclipsed in volume the coverage of President Johnson’s impeachment trial. This is an ALS from Tilton to Henry Ward Beecher, written on the stationary of the Brooklyn Daily Union. It is a friendly letter dated Dec. 20, 1870 referring to his Beecher’s retirement as editor and chief of the “Independent” and even says “success to your labors & peace to your soul.”. This is also accompanied with an original handwritten poem by Tilton, which was well published and this seems to be a working draft since there are changes throughout and the finished poem does have differences. The Letter and Poem Pages are attached together along the left side. Theodore Tilton (October 2, 1835 – May 29, 1907) was an American newspaper editor, poet and abolitionist. He was a poet of note, best remembered for the often quoted “Even This Shall Pass Away.” An abolitionist and advocate of women’s rights, he was editor (1860-1871) of the journal Independent, which was closely associated with Henry Ward Beecher, the nationally famous Congregational Minister and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. In 1872 Victoria Woodhull, a prominent voice for women’s suffrage who ran for President that same year (although she could not legally vote), accused Beecher of having an affair with Tilton’s wife Elizabeth. Both Beecher and Theodore Tilton at first denied the claim, but later Elizabeth confessed to her husband, and he sued Beecher for “alienation of affection.” Beecher’s Plymouth Church in Brooklyn exonerated Beecher in two inquiries, and a civil trial ended in a hung jury. The US government arrested and jailed Woodhull two days before the presidential election, claiming that her newsletter accusing Beecher of the affair was pornography sent through the mail. Woodhull’s charges against Beecher were said by some to be retaliation for his criticism of her views on women’s rights in marriage, which he claimed amounted to “free love.” Beecher survived the scandal, although with his prestige much diminished. Woodhull and her husband were bankrupted by it; Theodore Tilton chose to live the rest of his life abroad.

signed item by General McAuliffe signed most likely in the 1940’s in fountain pen where he added the word “Nuts” underneath his signature! Omar Bradley has also signed the same portion of this thick program cover, which has an embossed portion of a gold eagle on the reverse side. Alexander Fleming’s (1881-1955) discovery of penicillin changed the world of modern medicine by introducing the age of useful antibiotics. Streptomycin, an antibiotic drug, was the first used in the treatment of tuberculosis. For his discovery, Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945.

149. Sir James George Frazer (Father of Anthropology). An uncommon letter from Sir James George Frazer 1 January 1854 – 7 May 1941), was a Scottish social anthropologist influential in the early stages of the modern studies of mythology and comparative religion. He is often considered one of the founding fathers of modern anthropology. His most famous work, The Golden Bough (1890), documents and details the similarities among magical and religious beliefs around the globe. Frazer posited that human belief progressed through three stages: primitive magic, replaced by religion, in turn replaced by science.

CARTER LECTURES ABOUT THE TOMB OF TUTANKHAMUN 151. Howard Carter. British archaeologist and Egyptologist (1874– 1939) whose discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt’s ‘Valley of the Kings’ proved to be one of the signal events in the history of archaeology. TLS signed in pencil, “H. C.,” two pages, 8.25 x 10.5, Luxor letterhead, January 30, 1930. Letter to H. E. Hareld de Bildt, the Swedish minister to Cairo. In part: “Re lectures at Stockholm…I shall be most pleased to give one or more to the Swedish-British Society of Stockholm… My proposed lectures will comprise two: ‘The Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen,’ and ‘The Royal Burial and contents of the Innermost Chambers’…On my part I will bring all slides (English size) necessary, but would ask only that a competent operator with adequate lantern be secured.” Carter adds a number of pencil corrections in his own hand throughout the letter. In fine condition. Carter had discovered King Tut’s tomb on November 4, 1922, and his excavation of it continued throughout the next decade until well after this letter in 1932. The burial chamber was opened in February 1923, and the granite lid of the sarcophagus was not raised until the following year, on February 12, 1924, revealing the now-iconic solid gold funerary mask over King Tut’s mummy. This discovery was tremendously important in the archaeological world as one of the most well-preserved tombs ever discovered, and public fascination with the artifacts and treasure within spawned a cultural phenomenon within the Western world. Material from Howard Carter is very scarce, and letters discussing his discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb are of the utmost desirability

Thompson, a wealthy backer, the Thompson Trophy became one of the most coveted aviation awards during the heyday of airplane racing in the 1930s. Over the thirty-year history of the storied competition, many famous aviators and planes competed for the prize, with the winning speeds starting at 201 mph in 1930 and ending at 1,302 mph in 1961. 167. Pablo Picasso Incredible Signed Etching.

Famille de Saltimbanques (Family of Acrobats), c.1950 This work is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973)Soft-ground etching printed in black with a tan ground on cream Japon nacré, 1950. 492x410mm; 19 1/2x16 1/4 inches, full margins. An hors commerce impression, aside from the edition of 300. Signed and inscribed “H.C.” in red pencil, lower margin. Published by Commelynck, Paris. This simple and elegant rendition of an otherwise typical family portrait is anything but. A family of performers, actors, and entertainers are portrayed in this work, yet Picasso chooses to devote an equal amount of emotion and energy with each character, making this piece more equivalent to 4 works of portraiture. They are the perfect, nuclear family with dog in tow, however they also seem to be bogged down within their own, unique and individual worlds. This is a highly expressive, very moving work which any wife, husband, son or daughter could relate to. Min Bid $1000, EST: $3500 and up

James Montgomery Flagg was an illustrator, best remembered for his Uncle Sam “I Want You” poster, first done in WW1 which was among the 46 war-related posters he created between 1917 and 1919. He was a child prodigy who was contributing illustrations to magazines at the age of 12. He studied art in New York, England and Paris. He repeated his figure of Uncle Sam for the World War II poster, “Uncle Sam” and the “Red Cross Nurse,” which he created in 1942 in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and our subsequent entry into the war. Congress adopted “Uncle Sam” as a national symbol in 1961, largely to the credit of Flagg’s illustration. He was also a capable portrait painter and exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1900, at the National Academy of Design, and the New York Watercolor Club. In 1980, he was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Presented here is a Flagg portrait with an accompanying signed dialog. These works were obviously done during wartime (as the text piece would talked about hiding in a fox hole, but we can’t be too sure of which war, most likely WW2). The illustration (multi-media on paper, signed with artist’s initials in the bottom right) depicts a severely aged aristocratic matron, and the fully-signed humorous dialog tells a short tale of the aristocrat’s visit by a young woman and her photographer companion.
