Big Local Latest News A lot has been going on since the last newsletter. A curry night the Wallbottle brought lots of people together in a Big Local consultation. The Knottingley Angels Cheerleaders received their new uniforms and performed. Brendon Thompson entertained the audience with his street dance performance and there was singing from Sarah Jane. The latest community consultation film was shown and the new banner produced by the Community Group was unveiled.

Warwick Ahead formed a link with Dewsbury Moor another Big Local area. The two estates came together in April to look at how their Community Plans and Partnerships are forming. Through Big Local there are lots of opportunities for residents to go on courses or attend events. Unltd, a Big Local partner, are looking for Star People with a ‘can-do’ attitude who: • Know their area • Have a great idea that responds to an issue or opportunity in their local area • Are passionate about making a difference 7 residents have been successful in getting ‘Try It’ Awards and received £500 to kick start their vision for making the community better:

Groups have started their Big Local activities; these include classes, events and trips open to ALL residents. These activities are being run to encourage people to get involved in Big Local and help decide how the million pounds for the estate should be spent.

Craig Mckinley – working with children to grow vegetables; Brendan Thompson – running street dance classes; Rebekah Eyles – setting up a community allotment; Angela Jones-Goodyear – running outdoor fun fitness activities; Dot Moon and Pat Haigh – looking at innovative ways of tackling bullying through fun activities; Nigel Tunningley – running a boot camp for teenagers.

To celebrate Local Trust taking over the running of Big Local nationally and the announcement of the next 50 Big Local areas, Warwick Ahead and 2 other Big Local areas were chosen to showcase their work in London. A group of residents went

Crafty Folk

Tuesdays 1st May & 3rd July 10am -12pm Diabetic self help group is every 1st Tuesday of the month (not in June) in the shop.

Have bought their new sewing machines and are offering sewing classes with a tutor on Fridays 9.30-11.30, materials provided.

Mondays 30th April, 7th May, 21st May 1pm-4pm Art sessions are continuing so come along and have a go at lots of different arts.

Craft group meet every Tuesday 9.30 – 11.30

Tuesdays 15th May & 19th June 10am - 12pm Card making sessions every 3rd Tuesday of the month in the shop. Tuesday 15th May 2 – 4pm Table Top Bargins (please drop your donations at the shop. Free admission. We need plenty of volunteers, so come forward and have fun. Sycamore Children’s Centre Open Monday to Friday (8:30am-5pm) and provides services for all families with children under 5 years old and expectant parents living in the Knottingley & Ferrybridge area. A great range of activities and support each week day. In June the centre will be coordinating a trip for Big Local to Filey. What’s On

Wednesday 6th June Free of charge day trip to Scarborough for children aged 5-10. Courses Wakefield College will be running courses for people who are unemployed or claiming benefits. The courses will enhance their skills in writing cv’s and help people develop skills and confidence for the future. The courses are free of charge and will run from May 2012.

Monday 4th June Addy’s Army, a team consisting of 18 members of the community, will be taking part in the Dragon Boat Race Challenge at Knottingley Ampitheatre and are fundraising for the playground to provide summer trips for the young people. The Wakefield Together Partnership (includes The Council, Police, Fire Service, WDH and NHS Wakefield District) are delighted to invite everyone to attend the next Area Forum on June 28th 6.30 – 8.30pm, Pontefract Town Hall. The focus of this public event will be to celebrate community successes and to report back on how the Community Chest monies allocated at the previous forum has been spent. The forum will also provide an update on the development of the Pontefract and Knottingley Area Plan.
