Starting Year Two We are coming to the end of Year One of delivering the Warwick Ahead Community Plan. It’s been a great year with lots of successes with some projects taking longer to get off the ground than others. Warwick Ahead is part of Big Local, funding of over £1m is being given to 150 communities for at least 10 years to improve residents lives. RESIDENTS need to decide how to spend it and on what will make a difference to peoples lives. There are lots of projects going on including what’s in this newsletter – lots more can happen but we NEED YOU. The Community Board have been working hard on the Year 2 Plan and are excited to say that we’ll be launching Warwick Wheels, a community transport project with Osgoldcross Forum. This exciting development will mean improved transport for residents who get involved in the membership scheme. We will be recruiting a co-ordinator soon and are looking volunteers to gain experience with this very exciting project.

Our Star Volunteer Sheila Hutley the Warwick Ahead Community Board Chair Person works with great care and attention to make sure that every resident who comes to meetings feels welcomed, supported and listened to.

The Credit Union will be recruiting shortly for a worker and trainee volunteers.

Both these projects will be based at the Community Shop in Pinewood Place.

What’s On at the Addy Tuesday Club Every Tuesday 12-2pm.

A light lunch followed by Anna’s delicious scones or cakes. A time to natter and socialise followed by a light game of bingo.

Sporty Mates Sessions A new rugby sports session has been set up in Knottingley aimed at males aged 30 to 50 years.

The sessions are held every Wednesday between 6:30-7:30pm. For more information contact Andy Cable at the Addy on 01977 670953

Addy Youth Club Every Thursday 6-8pm.

For aged 11-16 who attend High School.

Recently we have been going to the local gym, held movie nights, cook and eat sessions… ALL FREE OF CHARGE! Come and join us one evening.

Ring Tara on 01977 670953 for further info or to see what’s planned for the summer holidays! Anyone who is joining the High School in September is welcome to visit the Youthy in the summer holidays, a great way to meet new friends.

Lost Property at the Addy We have a massive amount of clothing that children have left at The Playground. Please call in and see Michelle to see if there’s anything that belongs to you. We are open from 9am-6pm. We will be sending it to a charity shop at the end of July.

Warwick Community Group New Committee

Warwick Community Group The Community Group are working with the Art House in Wakefield to bring a series of arts projects to the estate. Recently members of the group have worked with artist Carrie Scott-Huby creating ‘Lifeloom books’.

The groups’ art work was exhibited at Fell House in Wakefield as part of the March Art Walk.

Welcome to Warwick Well-Being The newest Warwick Ahead – Big Local project is being run with and for residents by Leeds Mind. The project was launched in June with lovely tasters in complimentary therapies, a chillax room and refreshments.

Annual Seaside Day Trip 3 coaches are heading off to Skegness for the day on Friday 29th August.

Little Em’s Gift to the Luncheon Club Members When Luncheon Club regular and much loved resident Little Em passed away earlier in the year the group were really touched that she left some money for everyone to have a day out and do something nice.

The Luncheon Club members decided to have a trip to Skegness. The event was made even more poignant by the recent passing away of Little Em’s daughter Maureen Ward.

The group had a marvellous time and a day that Little Em and Maureen were very much part of in spirit.

Centre Manager Holly Ellis will be tying the knot with her partner Joe Corbett in August.

On behalf everyone from Warwick Ahead we wish them a great day and a very happy future together.

There’s a few environmental projects starting up on the estate: Better Gardens, Outdoor Natural Play areas and The Lanes Improvements – all of them are looking for local people to get involved and help shape these projects. Groundwork and Trust of Conservation Volunteers are helping residents get these projects off the ground.

On Monday 28th July 1.30 - 3.30pm Big Local Partner organisation Living Spaces will be running a workshop for people about improving their environment and how to get more involved. If you care about the environment on the estate and want to see how you can get involved please email admin@warwick-ahead.co.uk or turn up to the workshop.

Big Local Youth Networking Event Representing the Estate, Knottingley Angels and Warwick Watchers, Bobbie Lee, Matthew and Michelle Poxon attended a national Big Local Youth Networking Event in July to share some of their experiences of Big Local and to learn from people from other Big Local Areas.

Curate Your Own Members of the Addy Luncheon Club working with One to One Development Trust have contributed their artefacts to a new exhibition at Castleford Museum.

Pop along to the museum in Carlton Street, Castleford to hear their stories on film and see their exhibition running until December 2014.

We would like to inform you that the refurbishment of the lane will be started week commencing Monday 21st July, and hopefully completed by the middle of August.

The project consists of re surfacing the footpath, provision of little bins and 2 benches for the whole Warwick community. On completion can we kindly ask all residents to RESPECT the groups hard-work, dedication and patience in delivering the project. It has taken a year to get it to the starting gate. RESPECT is the key word here. If as a senior resident we want respect from the youngsters then we must show the respect they deserve for initiating this scheme. Let us as residents of Warwick Estate show other areas just what our kids are capable of achieving. Neighbourhood Watch and The Watchers are looking forward to seeing the Lane when it is completed.
