É com muito gosto que o Governo dos Açores se associa ao SATA Airlines Azores Pro, um evento da categoria “Prime” e que, pelo sexto ano consecutivo, traz à Região a elite do Surf mundial.

Ao longo do seu percurso, esta prova tem-se assumido, por mérito próprio, como um dos canais privilegiados para o reforço da notoriedade turística dos Açores no exterior, porque representa, na perfeição, a síntese entre as mais-valias de um destino que se pretende apresentar com um portfolio de produtos e serviços ligados ao turismo ativo e de natureza e que, simultaneamente, revelam uma especial preocupação ao nível da sustentabilidade ambiental.

Estas duas premissas estão, pois, bem presentes no Surf, modalidade que, quer ao nível da competição ao mais alto nível, quer na vertente de lazer, encontra em várias ilhas da nossa Região, locais europeus de excelência para a sua prática, aliando a qualidade das ondas à tradicional hospitalidade dos Açorianos.

Essa é mais uma potencialidade que o nosso Mar encerra e que o Governo dos Açores pretende continuar a desenvolver, no âmbito de uma estratégia que pretende valorizar este imenso recurso como uma das imagens de marca da Região.

Este é um caminho que já começou a ser trilhado de forma consistente e que encontra no SATA Airlines Azores Pro uma parceria de reconhecido mérito, com benefícios evidentes para ambas as partes.

It is with great pleasure that the Government of the Azores joins the SATA Airlines Azores Pro, a “Prime” event that, for the sixth consecutive year, brings to the region the elite of the surfing world.

Along its route, this event has been assumed, in his own right, as one of tht privileged channels to strengthen the overseas tourist notoriety of the Azores, since it represents in perfection the synthesis of the perks of a destination that offers a portfolio of products and services linked to tourism and nature and that simultaneously reveals a particular concern in terms of environmental sustainability.

These two facts are therefore very present in surfing, a sport that, either on a competitive level or as a leisure activity, finds on several locations of the islands in our region sites of excellence to their practice, combining quality waves to the traditional hospitality of the Azores.

It is another feature that our Sea offers and that the Regional Government intends to continue developing as part of a strategy that seeks to enhance this tremendous resource as one of the hallmarks of the region.

Rather Surfing, Diving, Whale Watching, Sailing,Tourist Fishing, Underwater Photography, among many other activities, the Azores have been constituted as one of the main national sports activities and nautical references.

This path that has already begun to be consistently directed and that is the SATA Airlines Azores Pro, a partnership of recognized merit with obvious benefits for both parties.

A word of thanks to the Association of Surfing Professionals – ASP - for their trust in the Azores, while hosting an event of this scale.

O Arquipélago dos Açores, mais especificamente a Ilha de São Miguel, é o “palco” de um dos mais importantes campeonatos de surf em território Europeu. Inserido no “Portuguese Wave Series” juntamente com o Cascais Billabong Pro, etapa WWCT do circuito feminino de surf e evento Prime masculino, e o MOCHE Rip Curl Pro Portugal, etapa do WCT realizada em Peniche, o Sata Azores Pro faz parte de uma “perna” obrigatória para muitos dos melhores surfistas do circuito mundial.

São Miguel é a maior entre as nove ilhas que compõem o arquipélago

a ondas de qualidade e, ano após ano, muitos dos melhores surfistas do mundo têm sido recebidos nesta prova com condições de luxo.

Tudo começou em 2009, com uma etapa de 6 estrelas, o Azores Islands Pro. Realizado na Praia do Monte Verde, onde se encontravam os melhores bancos de areia na altura, a prova introdutória do surf mundial nesta Ilha contou com excelentes ondas e muito bom surf do início ao fim. Tiago Pires recuperava de uma lesão mas mostrou muita garra e acabou em terceiro lugar. Além disso foi o único surfista em prova a marcar uma nota 10 e o resultado contribuiu para a sua manutenção no circuito no fim do ano. A final foi um heat 100% brasileiro, Jadson vs Willian Cardoso. Cardoso liderou toda a final e conseguiu aqui a sua segunda vitória no WQS, ficando também um passo mais perto da qualificação para o WCT.

O lado sul fica mais perto da capital, Ponta Delgada, e é onde se situa a mais urbana praia de toda a Ilha, o Pópulo. No lado norte as opções são múltiplas, e só na zona de Ribeira Grande estão situado dois dos melhores beach breaks de toda a Ilha, as praias do Monte Verde e de Santa Bárbara.

The Azores Islands, specifically the island of São Miguel, is the “stage” of one of the most important surf contests in the Europe. Part of the “Portuguese Wave Series” along with the Billabong Pro Cascais, a WWCT female surfing event and Prime event, as well as the MOCHE Rip Curl Pro Portugal, a WCT event held in Peniche, the Sata Azores Pro is the first stop of one of the most important “legs” in professional surfing.

São Miguel is the largest of the nine islands that make up the archipelago of the Azores and the most populous. As far as surfing is concerned the island can be divided into two areas, the northern part and the southern part, each one with its own characteristics. The south side is closer to the capital, Ponta Delgada, and is where the most urban beach in the whole island can be found, Populo beach. On the north side there are many options and in the Ribeira Grande area alone are situated two of the best beach breaks throughout the island, the beaches of Monte Verde and Santa Barbara.

The ASP World Tour has a solid connection with Azorean waves, having held events for five consecutive years in S. Miguel. It’s in Ribeira Grande, which is the most consistent zone in terms of quality and waves, that, year after year, many of the world’s best surfers have been received with amazing conditions.

It all started in 2009, with a 6 star event, the Azores Islands Pro. Held at Monte Verde Beach, where the best banks at the time could be found, the introductory event of the surfing world to this Island was done with great waves and very good surf from beginning to end. Tiago Pires was recovering from an injury but showed a lot of grit and finished third. He was the only surfer to score a 10 point ride and the result has contributed to its maintenance on tour at the end of the year. The final heat was 100% Brazilian, Jadson André Vs Willian Cardoso. A versão de 2010 do Azores Islands Pro acabaria cancelada por falta de ondas. Mas nem isso deixou a imagem desta ilha de alguma maneira manchada pois ainda se realizou toda a prova feminina, um WQS de 6 estrelas. Os bancos de areia mostravam grande potencial de ondas nas marés certas, mas sem ondulação foi mesmo a leveza do surf feminino que roubou o espectáculo, mostrando surf de qualidade que não desiludiu o público. À final chegaram duas surfistas de 18 anos, Laura Enever e Courtney Conlogue, dois nomes que muito em breve estariam a lutar por um lugar entre as cinco primeiras do WWCT. Conlogue foi quem começou melhor mas Enever acabaria por “roubar” o primeiro lugar e conseguir a sua primeira vitória profissional ao usar melhor a regra de prioridade para gerir o heat.

The 2010 version of Azores Islands Pro eventually was canceled due to the lack of waves, except for the women’s event, a 6 star WQS .The sandbanks showed great potential in certain tides, but even without much swell the grace and lightness of women’s surfing stole the show, with great surfing that did not disappoint the public. Two 18 years old up and comers, Laura Enever and Courtney Conlogue, two names that very soon would be fighting for a place in the top five of WWCT, made it to the final. Foi o evento de 2011, uma prova PRIME, escalão apenas atribuído a locais com ondas de nível mundial, que realmente revelou este local como um dos melhores do mundo para a prática do surf. Um surfista que confirmou essa qualidade foi o ex-campeão do mundo Mark Occhilupo, que se mostrou apaixonado pela beleza e qualidade das ondas, afirmando que as ondas da Praia de Santa Bárbara poderiam albergar até uma prova do WCT. Este foi o campeonato que colocou a ilha de São Miguel no roteiro de surfistas um pouco por todo o mundo, pois mostrou ondas de qualidade extrema. Se no passado os competidores já tinham visto uma parte do potencial da Ilha, neste evento apanharam das melhores do calendário do WQS de 2011. Praticamente todos os dias tiveram ondas perfeitas, que chegaram ao metro e meio. O ex-campeão do mundo, CJ Hobgood, um dos mais experientes competidores de todo o circuito, mostrou a sua mestria para vencer aquele que foi um dos melhores campeonatos do ano! A prova feminina foi vencida por Malia Manuel, do Havai, que derrotou na final a australiana Felicity Palmateer.

O Sata Airlines Azores Islands Pro de 2012 foi uma excepção em relação aos anos anteriores, pois baixou para o escalão de 6 estrelas, mas nem por isso deixou de ser um sucesso a todos os níveis.A Praia de Santa Bárbara voltou a receber muitos dos melhores do mundo com boas ondas, começando com meio metro e chegando ao metro e meio no último dia. Alguns portugueses participaram nesta etapa e mostraram bom surf no round 1 mas foram todos, excepto Tiago Pires e Frederico Morais, eliminados na segunda fase. Pires voltou neste campeonato aos bons resultados e mostrou-se um forte candidato à vitória. No entanto, no round de 16, o norteamericano Nat Young fez a média mais alta de todo o round para eliminar o português, e assim colocar-se como um forte candidato ao primeiro lugar. Na segunda final 100% brasileira da história dos eventos de surf nos Açores, Messias Félix surpreendeu o destaque de toda a prova, Wiggolly Dantas, e conseguiu a sua primeira vitória numa etapa de seis estrelas! Poucas semanas mais tarde realizou-se a prova feminina que coroou a sul-africana Bianca Buitendag como vencedora e “cimentou” a sua qualificação para o WWCT.

The 2011 event, a PRIME, was the contest who revealed this location as one of the best in the world for surfing. A surfer who confirmed that quality of the waves was former world champion Mark Occhilupo, who was greatly impressed by the beauty and quality of waves, stating that the waves of Santa Barbara Beach could accommodate a WCT. This was the event that put the island of São Miguel in the map for surfers all over the world, as it showed waves of extremely high quality. If in the past the contestants had already seen some of the potential on the Island, this event got the best waves of the 2011 WQS calendar. Former world champion CJ Hobgood, one of the most experienced competitors from around the circuit, showed his mastery and won one of the best contests of the year! The women’s event was won by Malia Manuel of Hawaii, who defeated the Australian Felicity Palmateer in the final.

The Sata Airlines Azores Islands Pro 2012 was a 6 star event, but remained a success at every level. The Beach of Santa Barbara once again received many of the world’s best surfers with good waves starting with two feet and coming to five feet on the last day. Some Portuguese participated in this stage and showed great potential in round 1 but all except Tiago Pires and Frederico Morais were eliminated in the second round. Tiago Pires proved to be a strong candidate to victory, however, in the round of 16, Nat Young, made ​​the highest average of the round to eliminate the Portuguese and become a strong contender for first place.

The final was a 100% Brazilian for the second time in the history of surfing events in the Azores, with Messias Felix beating favorite Wiggolly Dantas! Em 2013 a etapa voltou à classificação de evento Prime, o que atraiu um número ainda maior de competidores do World Championship Tour (WCT). Mais uma vez a Ilha de São Miguel recebeu surfistas com condições de luxo: sol e ondas perfeitas de “ponta-a-ponta”.

Os membros do WCT dominaram os primeiros dias, mas chegado às meias finais apenas metade das vagas pertenciam aos competidores da “elite” do surf mundial. Kolohe Andino parecia estar pronto para fazer a sua segunda final Prime consecutiva mas uma onda surfada na perfeição por Adam Melling perto do fim do heat foi “fatal” e garantiu ao australiano um lugar na final, onde iria encontrar um surpreendente, Tomas Hermes, mais um brasileiro com potencial de vencer a etapa. Hermes soube ler bem as condições e apanhou várias ondas muito cedo. Entretanto, com a maré a encher, as ondas foram diminuindo, criando poucas oportunidades para Melling vencer a prova, “oferecendo” assim o título a Tomas Hermes.

In 2013 The Sata Airlines Azores Islands Pro was again a prime Prime event, which attracted an even larger number of competitors in the World Championship Tour (WCT). Again the island of São Miguel received the surfers with luxury conditions, sun and perfect waves of from the beginning to the end. Members of the WCT dominated the early days, but by the semifinals only half the vacancies belonged to competitors from the “elite” of the surfing world. Confirmado mais uma vez para a belíssima Praia de Santa Bárbara, palco deste evento nos últimos anos, o Sata Azores Pro de 2014 promete ser mais um sucesso. São 14 os surfistas do World Championship Tour que marcarão presença no evento, quase metade da totalidade de surfistas desta elite do surf mundial.

Entre eles está mais uma vez Tiago Pires, que faz sempre desta etapa uma das suas raras passagens pelo circuito de qualificação. A Pires juntam-se mais seis surfistas portugueses, Nicolau Von Rupp, Frederico Morais e Marlon Lipke, qualificados pelo ranking World Qualification Series, e ainda Vasco Ribeiro e Zé Ferreira, wildcards da ASP e organização respectivamente.

A faltar fica o vencedor dos trials locais, sendo o favoritismo apontado para Jácome Correia, um surfista júnior que está entre os melhores da Europa. O Sata Azores Pro oferece 6.500 pontos para o vencedor e um prize money total de 250.000 USD. 18_

The beautiful beach of Santa Barbara is confirmed as the location for the 2014 event with a perfect sand bar expecting some of the best surfers of the world. 14 World Championship Tour surfers have confirmed their presence in this event, almost half of all surfers on the elite of the surfing world.

Among them is once again Tiago Pires, who always makes this event one of his rare passages through the qualification series. Tiago is joined by six more Portuguese surfers, Nicolau Von Rupp, Frederico Morais and Marlon Lipke, qualified by ranking, as well as Vasco Ribeiro and Zé Ferreira, ASP and organization wildcards. The other portuguese competitor will be the winner of the local trials, with Jácome Correia, a junior surfer who is among the best in Europe, as favourite.

The Sata Azores Pro offers 6,500 points to the winner and a total prize money of $ 250,000.

Mas o seu melhor momento foi em Outubro, durante o MOCHE Rip Curl Pro Portugal. Competindo como wildcard pela primeira vez numa etapa do World Championship Tour, Morais derrotou no round 2 um surfista que é considerado o melhor de todos os tempos, Kelly Slater. Com esta vitória o jovem surfista de Cascais ganhou notoriedade a nível mundial, sendo actualmente reconhecido pelo seu feito praticamente em qualquer costa em que se pratique o surf.

At 22 years of age Frederico Morais is considered as the portuguese surfer with the most potential to reach the WCT. 2013 was the turnaround year for this talented surfer, who achieved some impressive results at the beginning of the year and managed to keep rising during the rest of the season. In the qualifying circuit his most important results were a second place at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro, a 5 star WQS event, and a fourth placing in the final at Vans World Cup of Surfing, a Prime held in Hawaii. As a restult he received the prestigious Rookie of the Year award of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, something only one other European surfer (Tiago Pires) has managed to achieve.

But his best moment was in October, during the MOCHE Rip Curl Pro Portugal. Competing as a wildcard for the first time in a World Championship Tour event, Morais defeated in round 2 a surfer who is considered the best of all time, Kelly Slater. With this victory the young surfer from Cascais gained worldwide notoriety and is now recognized in any surfing event around the globe. | 20

Vasco Ribeiro é uma das maiores promessas de sempre do surf português. Aos 20 anos já conta com dois títulos de campeão da Liga MOCHE e tem fortes possibilidades de conquistar o título do circuito Pro Junior Europeu e o tri-campeonato da Liga. Os últimos anos têm sido de grande ascensão, mas foi em 2014 que o surfista luso chegou mais vezes aos quartos de final das etapas de qualificação. Contra si jogou a sua localização no ranking, que não lhe deu acesso a competir nas etapas mais valiosas, algo que se inverteu recentemente. Actualmente encontra-se sem patrocínio principal mas isso, de maneira alguma, fez baixar o seu rendimento competitivo. Espera-se um segundo semestre de 2014 cheio de resultados expressivos.

Vasco Ribeiro is one of most promissing portuguese surfers of all time. At 20 years of age he already has two national league titles and is a strong candidate to the European Pro Junior Title as well as his third Liga MOCHE title. He has been on the rise for the last few years and in 2014 he was the Portuguese who arrived more often to the quarter-finals of the qualifying events. Unfortunatelly his seeding was low and he didn’t had access to the most valuable events, something that was reversed recently. He’s currently without main sponsor but that in no way harmed his results. It is expected a second half of 2014 filled with impressive results.

Apesar das suas origens alemãs, Marlon Lipke nasceu e cresceu no Algarve. Talvez por isso tenha optado recentemente pela nacionalidade portuguesa, depois de uma longa carreira a representar a Alemanha. Para trás ficou o título Europeu Pro Junior e Open, o 3º lugar no mundial de juniores da ASP e um ano de experiência no WCT. Lipke nunca mais encontrou o ritmo competitivo que o levou à elite do surf mundial, mas o seu “power surf” manteve-se actual e a qualquer momento poderá voltar a estar entre os melhores.

Despite his German origins, Marlon Lipke was born and raised in the Algarve. Maybe that’s why he recently opted to compete under the Portuguese nationality, after a long career representing Germany. In the past he had great success, he won the European Pro Junior and Open titles, placed 3rd in the ASP World Junior Championship and qualified for the WCT. Lipke never found the competitive pace that took him to the elite of the surfing world, but his power surfing maintains him as one of the best and any day he could be back on top.

A meio do ano competitivo Nicolau Von Rupp era o português mais bem rankeado no circuito de qualificação a seguir a Tiago Pires. O surfista da Praia Grande mostrou muito potencial como competidor desde muito novo, mas foi como free surfer de ondas perfeitas e pesadas que se tornou num dos mais mediáticos surfistas da actualidade. Foi no início do ano que o seu foco voltou para a competição, atrás de algo que nunca deixou de ser o seu objectivo, conseguir uma vaga no WCT. O seu 9º lugar na etapa de Balito, África do Sul, garantiu-lhe o seu primeiro resultado sólido de 2014, além de lhe dar acesso às provas Prime do segundo semestre, essenciais para completar o seu objectivo mais imediato.

Halfway through the year Nicolau Von Rupp was the second highest ranked portuguese surfer on the qualifying tour, only behind the “WCTier” Tiago Pires.

Von Rupp showed great potential as a competitor at a young age, but it was as a free surfer of perfect and heavy waves that he became one of the most famous surfers of today. Never forgetting his goal of making the WCT he shifted his focus back to competition and placed 9th at the Balito Prime event, in South Africa.

With that first solid result in 2014 he qualified to compete on the rest of the Prime events of the second half of the year, essential to complete his immediate goal. | 23
