Welcome Dear Friends, On behalf of Ballet Arizona’s dancers, Board of Directors and staff, I thank you for joining us as we open our 34th season. This is such a landmark year for our company! I am honored and humbled to celebrate my 20th season as Artistic Director of Ballet Arizona with you all. Without audiences and donors like you, I would not be here today. In celebration I have put together a well-rounded and inspiring series of performances not to be missed. Join us in September for a program designed to move you – Director’s Choice. These ballets are fresh, unexpected and new to Arizona audiences; an evening of contemporary works that push boundaries. Experience some of the most masterful choreography of all time, including the Arizona premiere of Sir Frederick Ashton’s ballet Les Patineurs “The Skaters” — a personal favorite that I have always wanted to share with you. The program will also feature works by nationally-recognized choreographer Nayon Iovino, and yours truly. In the fall, be transported to the blue, Italian shores of Italy with Bournonville’s Napoli, a festive and uplifting story of Gennaro, a poor fisherman, and his beloved Teresina. Did you know that Ballet Arizona was the first US company to present the full-length ballet, Napoli, in 2015? The remainder of the season offers something for everyone. The Nutcracker fills the stage this holiday season with more than 150 performers, dazzling displays, and the enchanting music of Tchaikovsky played by The Phoenix Symphony. I will present a reimagined performance of Shakespeare’s playful A Midsmummer Night’s Dream, featuring new costumes, sets, and choreography. In May, you will witness the Arizona premiere of Bourée Fantasque at All Balanchine, in an evening of works by the Father of American Ballet, George Balanchine. We round out this season with a refreshing world premiere at the glorious Desert Botanical Garden. These performances are not only unique, but they have continued to be crowd-favorites, inspiring sellout shows. I look forward to continuing that tradition this season. Thank you for supporting our work, and thank you for supporting me these past 20 years. We have a great season ahead and we could not do it without you.

LIVE MUSIC SPONSORSHIP “An electric energy surges throughout Symphony Hall with the presence of live music. To the dancers, the music and dance are completely intertwined. From their perspective, the epitome of true balletic collaboration is with live music. Just as the dancers connect to the conductor and musicians and music, so too, does the audience.” – Timothy Russell, Conductor

Live music provided by the incredible musicians of The Phoenix Symphony constitutes the largest line item in Ballet Arizona’s budget. Help keep this magical partnership alive and support the development of a sustainable and fiscally responsible live music program for ALL of our season productions.

JEN

ROGERS An artist for artists

Listen carefully to Jen Rogers. She will tell you she’s not an artist. Listen to the president and CEO of the Phoenix Chorale explain with uncommon sincerity who she is, what she does and why. The word hero never comes up. But just by being herself, Rogers is an artist doing heroic work for artists. Her service to organizations like The Nash and Phoenix Girls Choir and her avant-garde approach to nonprofit leadership make her a unique asset in the Valley arts and culture scene. Rogers joined the Phoenix Chorale staff in 2008 after a few years at The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, where she honed her exceptional marketing skills. Those skills serve her calling to help artists. ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT While studying saxophone and music education at Northern Arizona University, she watched talented people in Flagstaff’s live music scene struggle for subsistence. She embraced artistic development as a strategy to help. Today, that means working passionately to raise the profile of some of the most extraordinary artists she knows. “I’m still in awe of what they do on stage,” Rogers says of the Phoenix Chorale.

“When you have voices in harmony singing together,” she adds, “the way that they blend together, the sound just washes over you. There’s something really special and particularly human about choir music.” THE BUSINESS OF ART Rogers, who became choir president and CEO in 2016, aspires to make the business side as exceptional as the Grammy-winning artistic side of the organization. So far, her efforts have boosted ticket sales, increased digital audience and created national buzz with an open, innovative search for an artistic director that produced Christopher Gabbitas, who debuts this month in that position. Listen to Lynne Traverse, Phoenix Chorale board chair, describe Rogers as the “best of the best.” “She has proven herself on so many levels,” Traverse says. “The [arts heroes] who are on these pages are people I want to be excited about, and I’m very excited about Jen.”

Synopsis

Napoli Synopsis Act I The story begins with a bustling wharf in Naples swarming with people. The widow Veronica enters with her beautiful daughter Teresina, who is courted by two older but rich men named Peppo and Giacomo. Teresina, however, wants neither of them, and waits with longing for the young fisherman, Gennaro. When Gennaro returns from sea, he and Teresina go to find Veronica and try to convince her that they should wed. Luckily for them, this task proves relatively easy once she sees how true the young couple's love is. Gennaro and Teresina set out on a moonlight sail on the Gulf. Suddenly a violent storm breaks out and the festivities come to an end. Gennaro is brought to land unconscious. Everyone thinks Teresina has drowned and Veronica curses the young fisherman. He is comforted by Fra Ambrosio, the local monk who gives him a picture of the Virgin Mary and sends him out to sea again in search for Teresina.

INTERMISSION

Act II The second act takes place in the Blue Grotto, a magical place ruled by the sea spirit Golfo. The lifeless Teresina is brought into the grotto where Golfo is fascinated by her beauty and changes her into a naiad. When Gennaro sails into the grotto, his Teresina no longer recognizes her fisherman because of the transformation. Even their favorite melody cannot awaken her memories, but the picture of the Virgin Mary vanquishes the magic power inside her. She regains her human form and the sea spirit retreats so Teresina and Gennaro can leave the grotto.

INTERMISSION

BALLET ARIZONA

Act III When Teresina and Gennaro return, the townsfolk are suspicious because they believed Teresina to be dead. Gennaro is still shunned by the others who are afraid of his possible partnership with evil forces. But after he has been blessed by the monk and Veronica gives her approval, the wedding celebration begins.

Demitra Bereveskos, Ballet Arizona dancer

Meet the Dancers

Meet the Dancers Who is your greatest dance inspiration? I am always inspired by Marianela NuĂąez, who is a principal dancer at The Royal Ballet. Her ability to capture the qualities of the character through her effortless execution of the choreography, makes her dancing seem so natural and spontaneous.

What do you like to do outside of dance? Something that I enjoy outside of ballet is reading. I love books and find that reading helps me to relax at the end of a long day of rehearsals. I also really enjoy writing.

What are you most looking forward to in the 2019-2020 season? I am really looking forward to my first season as a company member and I am excited to learn and perform a knew repertoire alongside so many inspirational dancers.

Why did you decide to pursue ballet as a career? I decided to pursue ballet as a career because I love the aspect of creating characters and stories through the beauty of movement and music. I really enjoy the thrill of performing and can’t imagine living without it.

Artistic Director

Following a brilliant career performing on the world’s greatest ballet stages, Ib Andersen was named Artistic Director of Ballet Arizona and The School of Ballet Arizona in 2000. He joined the Royal Danish Ballet at age 16 and, by 20, was the youngest principal dancer in the Company’s history. In 1980, he joined George Balanchine’s New York City Ballet as a principal dancer and originated roles in ballets by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins. Since becoming Ballet Arizona’s Artistic Director, Ib Andersen’s vision has developed Ballet Arizona from its infancy to the artistic excellence for which it is known today.

Director Biographies

Ib Andersen

“ To be the first company to premiere Napoli in its entirety in the U.S. was a big deal to me, not just because of its Danish roots and history, but also because it was such a humongous feat to stage.”

Samantha Turner Executive Director

“ One of my favorite parts is when the curtain goes up to begin Act 2.”

BALLET ARIZONA

Samantha Turner is a leader in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors, with expertise in marketing and business management. After three years as Ballet Arizona’s director of marketing in which the organization achieved record ticket sales, Ms. Turner was appointed Executive Director at the beginning of the 2016-2017 season. Prior to joining Ballet Arizona, Ms. Turner served as head of business operations and finance for CAP21, a New York-based non-profit performing arts organization. Ms. Turner’s for-profit career includes high-level marketing and business management roles at Aflac, Assurant and other organizations of national and regional scope.

Giving Back

Giving Back Alexandra Papazian Education & Community Engagement Manager Alexandra has been an active member of the Arizona dance community since she was 5 years old. She grew up dancing in The School of Ballet Arizona and attended/performed in several Ballet Arizona productions. As a child, dance gave her intention, purpose and the opportunity to learn valuable skills that have allowed her to flourish. Now as an adult, she is excited to return to Ballet Arizona and help others in the Arizona community experience the power and magic of dance for themselves. Listed below are just a few examples of the programs and work we are doing to connect communities through dance. Student Matinees The Student Matinee series offers deeply discounted tickets to area school children so that they can attend an abbreviated performance of Ballet Arizona’s upcoming professional program. Each year, nearly 7,000 students are able to explore the rich tradition of ballet, speak with the performing artists and learn about different performance-related careers. Ballet Under the Stars At the start of every season, Ballet Arizona builds and presents full-scale productions at parks around the Greater Phoenix area (Phoenix, Tempe, Goodyear and Fountain Hills). These free community performances inspire more than 15,000 children and adults each year, many of whom experience dance and Ballet Arizona for the first time.

BALLET ARIZONA

Class Act Class Act provides children in area communities an opportunity to dance, choreograph and interact with the professional dancers of Ballet Arizona. With the guidance and mentorship of Ballet Arizona dancers, students create their own brand-new dance works and perform them for their peers and communities at Ballet Under the Stars. DanceAZ School Residency Program is an arts-enrichment program designed to supplement students' social and emotional learning and 21st Century skill development. Over the course of 12 weeks, students are guided through an exploration of the four arts concepts — creating, responding, performing and connecting — and learn how they are applied in a dance context. Students have the opportunity to learn techniques and skills for selfmanagement and self-efficacy, create original dances and practice responding to peer work, and perform original work for a larger community audience. Participating students learn by active participation, self-discovery and reflection, which helps them develop new skills, attitudes and ideas to carry them forward in life. Creative Aging through Dance Through a variety of different programs, Ballet Arizona supports the needs of the minds, bodies and spirits of Arizonans as they grow older. Partnerships with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU, senior centers and care facilities allow us to bring supportive and enriching dance experiences to older adults across the Valley. Adaptive Dance Program Based on the original efforts of Boston Ballet, the Adaptive Dance Program at Ballet Arizona is designed to create a class environment that is sensitive to the needs of students with Down syndrome, while nurturing their selfexpression and developing their movement, social and rhythmic skills.

Eastlyn Jensen, Ballet Arizona dancer

Meet the Dancers

Meet the Dancers What are you looking forward to most this season & why? I am most looking forward to learning the new repertoire. This season, Ballet Arizona is performing many extravagant ballets in honor of Ib Andersen’s 20th Anniversary season as Artistic Director.

Who is your greatest dance inspiration & why? My greatest inspiration is Marianela Nunez. The Director of my previous ballet school always told me to study her and pay particular attention to the visual dichotomy presented through the strength exhibited in her lower body and the fluidity in her upper body. She wanted me to emulate that vision of strength and beauty.

Why did you decide to pursue ballet as a career? I discovered that ballet was an outlet of personal expression and I loved it. I also witnessed a strong personal yearning to dance when I was not taking classes during breaks. Class and rehearsals had become a part of me and it felt strange and discomforting to be away from it. Also during my time in high school, I had a dream of becoming a chemical engineer. I was accepted to many college engineering programs but deferred matriculating while I continue my dream of ballet. Many dancers know that a ballet career may be short but I plan to live it as long as I am able.

What do you like to do outside of dance?

Apart from having an interest in engineering, I love to play the violin. I also like to bake. I enjoy working out and going to Foothills Acceleration and Sports Training (FAST). I taught myself how to knit and crochet which I find very fun. I also love to go hiking and read by the pool, especially in Arizona.

About Napoli

About Napoli What does the staff think of Director’s Choice?

“ Napoli is a joy to dance because it is a celebration of love, friendship, and community. The energetic dancing combined with a romantic love story is why this ballet has stood the test of time. I can't wait to play a part in bringing this work to life again!” – Kaelyn Magee, Dancer

“ I love watching Napoli because it really has it all, beautiful and intricate dancing, lively music, a hint of magic and fantasy, wrapped up in a beautiful love story. There is never a dull moment!”

BALLET ARIZONA

– Natalie Salvione, Development Operations Manager

“ It is an absolute joy to watch Napoli because of the vibrancy of the world Bournonville creates onstage. The understated grace of the dancers, the spirited and lively characters, the magnificently detailed sets and costumes… It’s pure magic.” – Alexandra Papazian, Education and Community Engagement Manager
