ABOUT OUR COVER ARTIST
COVER ARTIST
SHERYL HESTER Sheryl Hester is a self-taught photographer and digital artist who draws her inspiration from nature. In 2010, she developed her technique of digitally altering her photographs to create landscapes of abstract natural forms and fantasy-based illusions. A photograph of a bird may be digitally hand-painted to portray a horse, or a plant may be altered to portray a person. The effect is an often-whimsical design inherently connected to people, places and things. She is a multiple award-winning artist with art featured in museums, galleries, magazine covers, solo and juried shows throughout Montana and Tucson. To learn more, visit sherylhester.blogspot.com

Act One Tucson
ACT ONE: BECAUSE EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE ARTS How exciting was going to your first play, museum, ballet, or concert as a child? Remember the magic when you experienced the wonders of art at such a young age? Now imagine being able to gift that feeling to thousands of children who may never have the opportunity to get involved in the arts. In Arizona, schools increasingly do not have funds for field trips. This is especially the case for Title 1 schools in lower-income communities. A charitable organization founded in 2011, Act One provides school children from low-income families the opportunity to experience arts performances and exhibitions through field trips to professional theaters and museums. During the 2019-2020 school year, Act One has the capacity to bring nearly 8
9,500 K-12 students and chaperones on educational arts field trips in Tucson. Statewide, Act One partners with more than 50 arts organizations to bring students on field trips. Because Act One pays for both the tickets and the busing, students who previously didn’t attend field trips are able to experience the arts. Among the nearly 8,000 Tucson students and chaperones who attended field trips with Act One last school year were 60 5th graders from Dietz K-8 in the Tucson Unified School District, where 82 percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunches. The students went to The Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre and saw This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing. For many

students, it was their first time going to a play and watching live theater. “Three of my girls – one from Iraq, one from Tanzania and one from Sudan – spoke all the way back to the school on the bus; they discussed their favorite characters and their favorite parts,” said Katherine Cheatham, a 5th grade teacher from the school. “As a teacher, hearing their reaction and comprehension was rewarding. It is exactly what you hope to achieve in bringing them world experiences and academics. They were especially concerned about keeping their play booklet. The appreciation and wonder of my students who come from cultures where they have had very little exposure never ceases to amaze me.”
CULTURE PASS: ARTS FOR ALL In addition to its field trip program, Act One manages the Act One Culture Pass, which provides opportunities for nearly 50,000 people to attend Tucson arts and cultural destinations and performances for free. Culture Passes are available at 11 Pima County Public Libraries and the Pima Community College Desert Vista Campus
Library, where they can be checked out by library card holders. Visit act1az.org/culturepass for more information.
GIVE CHILDREN THE ARTS Act One depends on the generosity of donors to provide the funding to bring more than 9,500 Tucson students on educational arts field trips this year. For as little as $10, you can sponsor one child on an arts field trip. Learn more about Act One at act1az.org or call 602-343-6239.

ARIZONA OPERA: INTIMATE STORIES NEAR AND FAR
ARIZONA OPERA
Fellow Travelers. Photo by Philip Groshong
Combining provocative and intriguing tales with lush music and excellent performers, Arizona Opera’s 2019-2020 performances span the globe in setting and vocal talent. The curtain rises on Shining Brow, part of the McDougall Arizona Opera RED Series (September 27-29 at Phoenix’s Herberger Theater; October 5-6 at Tucson’s Temple of Music and Art). It’s focused on Frank Lloyd Wright’s life between 1903-1914, including pivotal points in his relationships with his wife and his mistress, culminating in the devastating multiple murder and fire which destroyed Taliesin and ended Wright’s Prairie School period.“In many ways, this opera is about how Wright the architect became
Wright the icon,” explains director Chas Rader-Shieber. Composer Daron Hagen’s works span wide; The Phoenix Symphony premiered his fifth symphony in 2015. “I always assume there are people in the audience who are smarter than me, people who get my jokes, and people who are simply there because their husbands made them come,” says Hagen. “All three…should be entertained.” Next in the McDougall RED Series comes Fellow Travelers (November 8-10 in Phoenix; November 16-17 in Tucson), written by librettist Greg Pierce with music by Gregory Spears. The opera tells the story of an ill-fated romance during the heyday of ON STAGE 2019–2020 |

Senator Joseph McCarthy, who relentlessly purged the State Department of “subversive” elements including homosexuality and communism. Spears’s music is unique — “nothing that I’ve ever quite heard before,” says baritone Joseph Lattanzi, who sings the role of Hawkins Fuller. “It blends a lot of different styles that we are familiar with: minimalism; 14th-century troubadour influence; lyricism... this is a very tonal piece.” He continues, “You get to the end and you feel like you’ve been taken on this emotional roller coaster...it almost sweeps you away.” Grand opera returns with the Main Stage Series with Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème (January 24-26 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix; February 1-2 at Tucson Music Hall), beloved for its struggling artists and entirely hummable melodies. This masterpiece served as direct inspiration for the hit musical Rent, which features themes from Puccini’s opera.
The Marion Roose Pullin Opera Studio alumni figure prominently in every production, and all of the Studio’s current singers will perform in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss (April 3-5 in Phoenix; April 11-12 in Tucson). “It’s such a quirky piece,” says Christopher Cano, Arizona Opera’s Head of Music and Studio Director. “It’s a real opera-lover’s opera – the last 20 minutes are some of the most sublime music ever penned.”

Brace for the stampede when Riders of the Purple Sage returns (February 28-March 1 in Phoenix; March 7-8 in Tucson), just three years after its triumphant world premiere.
Part of the Marlu Allan and Scott Stallard Modern Masterwork Series, it’s highlighted by Ed Mell’s glorious artwork, a state-of-theart LED video wall and a ranch house based on still-standing Winsor Castle at Pipe Spring National Monument. “We want to feel the passing of time...the expansive nature of the sage, the open desert,” says Stage Director Fenlon Lamb.

GREAT THEATER STARTS IN ARIZONA
Arizona Theatre Company (ATC), the official State Theatre of Arizona, is gearing up for “curtain up” on a spectacular 53rd season that will celebrate the individual in all its forms through a richly creative tapestry of genre, artistry, and diversity. The new season, under the theme “The Curtain Rises,” continues ATC’s commitment to bring to Arizona world-quality productions that illustrate the gloriously, wide-ranging forms of storytelling that are surprising, aweinspiring, and exciting. Experience the finest theater created in Arizona for Arizona! New Artistic Director Sean Daniels sees this season as not only an exciting new chapter in ATC's history, but also Arizona's. "I’m ready to start saying that great theater in our country starts in Arizona. That plays go from here, then to New York or to the rest of the country. I want audiences to feel that everything we put on stage is world-class and is exactly what you would experience at the best theater anywhere else in the country – but it’s in your city and it is built here for you.” There are many ways to experience ATC. One of the best ways is by becoming part of the ATC family with a season package. The 6-Play subscription offers the best seats at a significant savings. For a bit of flexibility, there are 5-, 4-, 3-Play or FLEX packages available. 18
ATC’s 53rd season offers these six compelling productions:
ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY
The Royale A power-packed boxing drama The Royale is not your usual sports play. First of all, it is not really about life in the ring. Second, not a single punch will be thrown, at least not with fists. Set in 1910, deep in the midst of Jim Crow, the story is loosely based on the life of Jack Johnson, the world’s first African-American heavyweight boxing champion. The play explores one man’s struggle while reflecting a much broader one. It is also a play about a brother and his sister - his sister, who as he climbs for glory and respect, remains his greatest adversary and strongest motivation. “Original and graceful. The Royale packs a punch!" – The New York Times
Silent Sky A celebration of discovery, originality and curiosity Based on the true story of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, astonishing discoveries await in this exquisite blend of science, history, family ties and fragile love. A passionate young woman must map her own passage through a society determined to keep a woman in her place. “Bottom line: Heavenly.” – Atlanta JournalConstitution Cabaret Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! A powerful musical love story centered on Sally Bowles, a talented cabaret performer at Berlin’s Kit Kat Club and Cliff Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration. Set in the 1930s Berlin during the Nazi regime’s rise to take over the German government, Cabaret is a big award-winning musical critique of apathy, and a chilling look at totalitarianism. “…a masterpiece of musical theatre…” – Chicago Tribune ON STAGE 2019–2020 |

ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY
“Master Harold”…and the Boys The semi-autobiographical masterwork "Master Harold"…and the Boys takes place in South Africa during the early years of apartheid. A stunning masterpiece, one of the most powerful coming-of-age plays ever written, and still timely, still compelling, still profoundly moving. "…a blistering fusion of the personal and the political." – The New York Times The Legend of Georgia McBride A big-hearted, FIERCE music-filled comedy Casey is a broke Elvis impersonator with a baby on the way. When the owner of the run-down bar where he works brings in a drag show to attract more customers, Casey is out of a job. Or is he? Filled with music, humor, and plenty of sequins, this joyful, acclaimed new play is a reminder that the path to prosperity and fulfillment may sometimes take an unexpected turn. Don’t miss this hilarious and heartwarming show taking the nation by storm. “Stitch-in-your-side funny! Full of sass and good spirits." – The New York Times Women in Jeopardy A riotous comedy Middle-aged mom Liz has a new man. And let’s face it—he’s just plain creepy. When a mysterious disappearance sets the community on edge, Liz's best friends leap to the rescue. This is a hilarious comedy about trading in wine glasses for spyglasses when the mid-life crisis just isn’t your speed. “The laughs in Wendy MacLeod’s play come fast and furious...a new work that’s modern, lively, and loads of fun.” – Boston Globe

“I AM CONSTANTLY AMAZED BY [ROGUE THEATRE’S] CREATIVITY AND ABILITY TO SHOW OUR HUMAN PROPENSITIES AND MYSTERIES IN SUCH A WAY AS TO CATCH OUR SOULS.” —Dottie Davis, audience member
STORIES OF OBSESSION AT THE ROGUE THEATRE As you walk into The Rogue Theatre, you are greeted by giant puppets and painted Renaissance tapestries. The aroma of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies fills the snack bar. An enthusiastic crowd gathers on the colorful Mexican tile in the historic lobby. When Joe McGrath and Cindy Meier began The Rogue Theatre in 2005, they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with the world’s greatest authors. They wanted to produce theater that explored essential questions of human existence. And they wanted to find a group of people who longed to share these meaningful stories. Fifteen years later, The Rogue Theatre is stronger than ever. The Rogue Theatre is an intimate 160-seat Actors’ Equity Small Professional Theatre in the heart of Tucson. The theater is housed in The Historic Y, adjacent to a large parking lot. Post-show discussions are held after every performance. The Rogue won the 2012 American Theatre Wing (founder of the Tony Awards®) National Theatre Award.
Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece Long Day’s Journey into Night is a somber and moving drama of addiction, love and regret; Noël Coward’s delightful Blithe Spirit begins with a séance that attracts a lost love; Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick in a new and colorful adaptation for the stage; Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a darkly funny study of mother-daughter jealousy in rural Ireland; And Shakespeare’s delightful Twelfth Night is full of charming disguises and mischievous deeds. Tickets are now available for The Rogue’s 15th Season: Stories of Obsession.

A SEASON OF CELEBRATION Forty years ago, a group of enterprising musicians had the vision of “a musicians’ orchestra.” Today, the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra (SASO) has grown into a celebrated Tucson institution, known for passionate performances, thrilling programming, and collaborations with outstanding soloists from around the world. This unique all-volunteer orchestra has toured Brazil, China, and Mexico, recorded two commercially-distributed albums, created international collaborations with the San Luis Potosí Opera Festival and the Mexican Consulate and delighted generations of musicians and audiences. American composer Richard Danielpour incorporates ancient Persian poetry in a set of songs of life, death and love; American baritone Thomas Hampson brings a program of American vocal music spanning much of the country’s history; other artists bring their own take on America’s diverse, yet unique, musical voice.” The 2020 festival features over 24 events in 24 days. TUCSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMS EIGHT SYMPHONIES OF BEETHOVEN RENÉE FLEMING, E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, GUITARIST SHARON ISBIN AND ARETHA, A TRIBUTE
The Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will follow its 90th birthday celebration with a season filled with music by Ludwig van Beethoven in honor of the 250th anniversary of the revolutionary composer’s birth. Maestro José Luis Gomez, who recently extended his contract with the TSO through 2024, will lead the celebration by conducting Beethoven’s first eight symphonies. “Offering eight Beethoven symphonies in one season is significant,” commented Maestro Gomez. “Beethoven is a musical god. He has influenced and inspired everybody–artists, conductors, orchestras and audiences around the world.” 42
Audiences will experience a one-night-only performance by soprano Renée Fleming, who has captivated audiences from the Met to the Super Bowl; Micky Dolenz, the original lead singer of The Monkees, performing hits like “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer” with full orchestra; multipletime Grammy® winner Sharon Isbin, “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time,” (Boston Magazine) returns to TSO to perform "Troubadours", written for her by John Corigliano, composer of The Red Violin film score; and the beloved movie E.T. The ExtraTerrestrial with live orchestra, for the TSO’s annual Thanksgiving Film Weekend. The season will open with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, known for its use in films including Mr. Holland’s Opus, The King’s Speech and X-Men. Also on the program is the Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by Yekwon Sunwoo, the 2017 Gold Medal Winner of The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition

TUCSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The first commissioned work of the season features fiddler Tessa Lark. The Sky Concerto for Violin was written for her by Michael Torke, a composer described by The New York Times as “the Ravel of his generation.” The piece was co-commissioned by the TSO with the Albany Symphony and other orchestras. The world premiere took place in Albany, NY in January 2019.
The TSO has commissioned a work for orchestra and chorus by Young Composers Project alumnus Robert Lopez-Hanshaw. Lopez-Hanshaw’s Hanukkah Cantata was well received last year when it debuted at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. The TSO will premiere his new work in January. The Classic Series will feature guest artists Sean Chen and Paul Huang. A prize winner at The Cliburn, Chen made his TSO debut in 2015 and returns to perform the Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2. Huang will make his TSO debut with the Barber Violin Concerto on a program also featuring Barber’s haunting Adagio for Strings, popularized in the film, Platoon. Maestro Gomez will close the Classic Series conducting Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” his most popular and successful work during his lifetime. The University of Arizona’s "Arizona Choir" will join TSO and the TSO chorus for this powerful finale of the Classic Series. The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures, along with its ongoing exhibits, introduces a new wing illustrating how miniature artists craft their tiny works. The exhibit features interactive tools of the miniature trade in actual size, miniature size and supersize.

TMTMM. Global Miniatures Exhibition
Poetry often inspires other forms of art, and A Portrait of Poetry: Photographs and Video by B.A. Van Sise examines the interconnectedness of the worlds of photography and poetry. The exhibit at the Center for Creative Photography displays photographic interpretations of poets and their work alongside the text that inspired the photographer.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the famous and influential Staatliches Bauhaus, the University of Arizona is showing A New Unity: The Life and Afterlife of Bauhaus to celebrate the impact of the German school on the art world. Explore specialty gardens and a butterfly exhibit home to over 400 butterfly species from 11 exotic countries at Tucson Botanical Garden. At the same time, you’ll be educated on the diversity and beauty of nature. The Tucson Museum of Art opens the brand new Kasser Family Wing of Latin American Art with exhibitions featuring pre-Columbian art and a colorful scrutinization of modern life in Los Angeles.

CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY
CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHY LIVES HERE The 2019-2020 season is bookended by two major exhibitions. A Portrait of Poetry: Photographs and Video by B.A. Van Sise (through November 23) explores the interconnected worlds of photography and poetry. A collaboration with the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center, this exhibition features portraits of contemporary poets alongside the poems from which the photographer gathered inspiration. The Qualities of LIGHT: A View from the Archive at the Center for Creative Photography (December 14 - May 9) celebrates the legacies of LIGHT, a significant early photography gallery. This exhibition will draw heavily on the LIGHT archive, housed at the Center, and focus on the gallery’s innovation, commitment to artists, focus on education, cultivation of community and influence on the market. The exhibition is complemented by a three-day celebration, Legacies of LIGHT (January 17-19).

THE MINI TIME MACHINE MUSEUM OF MINIATURES
BIG THINGS ARE AFOOT AT THE MUSEUM OF MINIATURES On September 1, the museum celebrated its 10th anniversary with a day of free admission and festive programming for the community. At the 10th anniversary celebration, the museum unveiled refreshed gallery spaces, the installation of recently acquired miniatures, and a new interactive space. The new interactive space illustrates how miniaturists rely on STEAM principles (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) to precisely construct buildings and everyday objects. They do this at a fraction of their life-size counterparts through handson fun by manipulating tools of the trade in three scales–actual size, miniature, and supersized. In their 10th year, the museum will offer favorite programs such as HalloWEEn featuring Jean LeRoy’s Buzzard Creek Ghost Town, Wee Winter Wonderland, May Day, and Summer Camps–as well as bring six new exhibits of miniature art to Tucson. Upcoming exhibits include Mario Patino’s Ravished Landscapes and Rundown Interiors which depicts the ravishes of time on everyday scenes inspired by the artist’s life growing up in the barrios of South Tucson. Global Miniatures, on loan from the Fleming Museum of Art, features ancient and contemporary tiny artifacts and finely crafted works of art from around the world, lending insight into the intentions of the peoples that made them, used them, and collected them. Global Miniatures opens January 28.

If you’re already in love with the American West, the 2019-2020 exhibition season at the Tucson Museum of Art (TMA) will fuel that ardor. Just getting to know the region? The new exhibitions reveal the diverse people, cultures and landscapes that have inspired artists for millennia. The Western Sublime: Majestic Landscapes of the American West examines works of art that interpret, reinvent, and transform the idea of the sublime: an aesthetic ideal with an emotional or spiritual charge that instills awe. This exhibition includes basketry, drawings, paintings, photography, prints, textiles and poetry from the mid-1800s to today. The exhibit runs October 19 through February 9. Art dealer Elaine Horwitch was a major force in contemporary art in the Southwest, responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of artists from the region. Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art and the Legacy of Elaine Horwitch highlights the works of some of the Elaine Horwitch Galleries’ most popular artists who achieved

national and international acclaim. The exhibit runs February 29 through June 21. On March 22, TMA will celebrate the grand opening of the Kasser Family Wing of Latin American Art with two exhibitions. A new installation of pre-Columbian art presents masterful works of stone sculpture, textiles, metalwork, and ceramics created in the ancient Americas over nearly three millennia. Patrick Martinez: Falling Empire, Martinez’s first solo museum exhibition in the American Southwest, colorfully scrutinizes suburban and urban life in Los Angeles. Spend an afternoon in historic downtown Tucson with exhibitions, a one-of-a-kind museum store, and Café a la C’Art.
