Our New Fellows

On Purpose is about change. We believe that business can be a driving force for social and environmental good, and that the next generation of leaders must be able to speak the language of both the commercial and social sectors to help tackle the most pressing problems of the future. On Purpose is a one-year leadership development programme for professionals wanting to transition in to social enterprise. We challenge our Associates to become the next generation of social enterprise leaders. Each of our Associates works in two innovative socially or environmentally motivated organisations and takes part in personal and professional development through weekly training, mentoring and coaching with industry leaders. We provide our Associates with the space to learn, develop, experiment, and above all, to change. I am proud to introduce our April 2013 cohort, who complete their programme and become Fellows in March 2014. I have greatly enjoyed our time together, and know that the end of their time at On Purpose marks the beginning of the achievements and the impact they will go on to have in the social enterprise space. If you would like to get in touch with any of the Associates included here, please feel free to contact them directly.

The Programme

The On Purpose programme combines two six-month paid placements in innovative purpose-driven organisations with world class training, mentoring and coaching from industry leaders. PRESTIGIOUS WORK PLACEMENTS On Purpose Associates are placed in organisations that are working to create social and / or environmental good in business-like ways.Typically reporting directly to senior management, Associates take responsibility for work streams that are significant to the success of the organisation, while simultaneously benefitting from learning first-hand from organisations that are at the forefront of the social enterprise space.

MENTORING Each Associate engages in fortnightly one-to-one mentoring from top-flight professionals. Largely drawn from the world’s most renowned strategy consulting firms, the mentors provide an independent voice to support and challenge the Associates in the work they undertaken in their placements.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING Associates participate in over 200 hours of training over the course of the programme, covering commercial skills, social sector knowledge, professional skills and personal development. Our trainers are drawn from top leaders in their respective fields, who stretch the minds of the Associates and build their professional capabilities and personal impact.

EXECUTIVE COACHING During the programme, mentoring is complemented with quarterly executive coaching. This gives the Associates an invaluable opportunity to step back and consider how they can be most impactful as leaders, and to focus on what it will take for them to achieve their longer term career ambitions.

Training Overview

The training programme not only equips Associates with a wide range of knowledge and skills, it is also a very valuable opportunity for them to network with movers-and-shakers in and around the social enterprise space. The curriculum is designed to provide Associates with a platform that enables them to get up to speed with the range of areas identified as necessary to be effective in the social enterprise space. While getting up to speed with the basic principles, they also develop the ability to ‘ask the right questions’ and, importantly know, where to go to find out more by virtue of building a powerful network. A typical Friday afternoon allows the Associates to benefit from both an external trainer, leading a session on their particular area of expertise, and internal peer-led learning. The topics covered fall in to four themes, described opposite.

Meet The Cohort We’re a diverse cohort. We’ve come from a wide range of backgrounds, often have differing opinions but are all driven by a deep desire to help solve big social and environmental issues. Whilst our individual journeys to On Purpose may have been different, we’ve come to understand the similarities that shape our values and the lenses through which we focus our actions. We’re passionate about social enterprise and believe that, as the space grows, we can contribute to developing solutions to tackle intractable problems. It’s been enormously rewarding to be part of a community who are always keen for an in-depth and candid discussion, and who never fail to bring something insightful to the table. We are positive that each one of us will look back on the last 12 months as a period of invaluable personal and professional development. Above all, On Purpose has been about growth. It has been an incredible privilege to work with our placements, where we’ve learned a great deal while being supported by mentors and coaches who have challenged our thinking and helped us see around the corners. Friday trainings have been a particular highlight and through the exceptional individuals who have led them, combined with the discussion they’ve stimulated among our cohort, we’ve come to appreciate that there is never a single solution to a problem. We’re excited about the future and look forward to finding our own niche and spreading the impact that On Purpose has had on each of us. We hope you enjoy reading through our profiles and if you find a common interest please do get in touch – we’re a chatty lot and love a good discussion, particularly if it comes with a slice of cake!

My attraction to social enterprise stems from a belief that although the world is messy, disjointed and unjust, it is changeable. I am fascinated by how things work and fit together, whether these are personal relationships, organisational structures, or social dynamics. I believe that social enterprise offers us the best opportunity to change the status quo and collectively tackle complex and deep-rooted problems. I am interested in opportunities which will allow me a large degree of responsibility over an early-stage social business which shares my values of trust, collaboration, and ambition to create something of genuine use to society.

My background is in professional publishing, mainly in project management, but most recently I worked as a commercial manager for Thomson Reuters. After an enjoyable 18 years (!) of working life, I decided the time was ripe to focus on something that had a distinctly positive impact. I’m now pursuing a long-held passion for International Development. I recently completed a Masters at the LSE, and have gained valuable experience in the sector through the On Purpose programme. I’d like to use my project and general management skills in an organisation focused on empowering the underprivileged to live fulfilling lives.

On Purpose provided a low cost / low risk way to trial the approach; what really made it come to life was Kathryn’s can-do attitude and approach to working with staff across the organisation. The need for a role in the long term was quickly proven; Kathryn was able to turn our high level plans into something with much greater clarity and ownership in a remarkably short timeframe.”
