So whither now? It is of course very difficult to predict the behaviour of the government, of any government, not least one set to embark on some of the most complex negotiations ever attempted in order to attempt to win an acceptable deal in the Brexit melting pot. So in this regard the questions: • Will the long trailer experiment • continue as is? • Will it be expanded or will it simply be • allowed to fade into historical • obscurity? These questions cannot be easily answered, but it does seem there is a growing push towards adopting the longer profile for long-distance trunking, where operational benefits are already clear. For the trailer manufacturers who have built the LSTs, who might once have harboured the hope of reaping the benefit of possible sales in Europe in the longer term, those hopes have flickered and died, but the idea of perhaps adding another couple of thousand to the group of LSTs on UK roads is perhaps not so far-fetched as it might once have been. With Brexit, the UK electorate has flexed its political muscle - perhaps more long trucks will come as an assertion of our new-found ‘independence’ from EU standardisation.
