owever, the benefits of telematics to commercial vehicles could be even more significant because of the variables involved in the operation of a commercial vehicle. Unlike passenger cars, commercial vehicles do not necessarily have standard configurations when they leave the manufacturer. The information reporting chain for a commercial vehicle can include drivers, managers, dispatchers, independent maintenance providers, specialised breakdown assistance and many others. To further complicate matters, multiple drivers may be operating multiple vehicles with differing licensing or training requirements. These vehicles may have temporary and interchangeable equipment such as trailers or task-specific equipment. A commercial vehicle may also be operated locally, regionally, nationally or internationally.

H

“The addition of live vehicle data can either make for further complications, or greater efficiencies, depending on how that data is managed.” All of these variables make managing a commercial vehicle fleet very complicated. The addition of live vehicle data can either make for further complications, or greater efficiencies, depending on how that data is managed. Unlike passenger cars, commercial vehicle manufacturers have been collecting data from commercial vehicles for quite some time. Although commercial vehicles have been leaders in vehicle data until now, they must now transition to the expectations of a new “connected world”. There are three primary areas where commercial vehicle data must transition: access, consistency and interoperability. Access to data has mainly been

ISSUE 17 - APRIL 2018

limited to the vehicle manufacturer and, possibly, the Fleet Manager. The vehicle data offered by manufacturers is very inconsistent from manufacturer to manufacturer. Finally, commercial vehicle data does not lend itself to integration with third-party systems and service providers. If these three areas of concern can be addressed, the impact of vehicle data on commercial vehicle operations could be significant. Providing vehicle data access to the entire information reporting chain would drive the development of better services for all participants. Consistent data across all manufacturers would allow for the development of “all-brands” services such as those seen in the passenger car environment. Integration with third-party providers would drive innovation, and provide a broader range of choices for commercial vehicle operators. In anticipation of this transition to a “connected world”, Alliance Automotive Group has developed the GROUPAUTO Network Management platform (GNM). GNM is a cloud-based platform that connects all stakeholders. These stakeholders include repair garages, distributors, parts suppliers, training providers and many others. Two new modules are currently being added to GNM: G-Connect and Repair & Maintenance. G-Connect is a telematics system that will support both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The Repair & Maintenance Module will provide a standardised interface between garage networks and fleet customers for repair and maintenance services. The Repair & Maintenance Module will also include a pan-European roadside-assistance program designed especially for commercial vehicles. The module is called Breakdown Service (BDS). As technology changes, vehicle repair and maintenance must also change. Alliance Automotive Group recognises this need for change, and is working to provide the necessary resources to support our repair garage networks as they adapt to this new “connected world”.

e take a look at the TruckTEC brand and what it means to the Alliance Automotive UK family of G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK distributors and TOP TRUCK workshops. The whole TruckTEC idea has always been based on providing OE quality parts at the best possible price to and through GROUPAUTO’s distribution chain. The core idea was to create a strong and recognisable stand-alone global brand which would allow all outlets to effectively provide “Own Brand solutions by backing

up the existing branding for G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK and TOP TRUCK with an OE quality product range which is clearly part of the same family. The result, it seems, has been truly remarkable. The brand launched in 2014, with oils and lubricants, and has since become established and well received in the market and we are continuously working to develop and expand the range based on gaps in the market and what our customers want. The TruckTEC team are happy with the traction of the brand, with sales grossing a record ÂŁ2m in 2017. Every single one of the

G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK distributors in the UK now sells TruckTEC as one of their major brands, and the reasons behind that are quite simple. If a customer speciďŹ cally requests an OEM part that is ďŹ ne - providing access to those parts at a good price is absolutely core to how G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK distributors work. However, many customers do not want the expense of buying OEM sourced parts, though they do want the quality, performance and longevity. They may well ask for an OE equivalent part, and might even ask for an OE equivalent brand by

Now however, the distributor can turn to the customer and say: “Well, I can certainly supply you with that product if it is what you want. But I could also provide you with our own solution, from the TruckTEC brand, which we know is high quality, supported by Alliance Automotive Ltd, and will deliver at least the same quality at a significantly lower price - simply because it is our own brand!” “We are seeing great interest from both our distributors and their customers, and from our own TOP TRUCK workshops,” explained Martin Sangster, Commercial Manager at GROUPAUTO UK. “We are seeing strong and ever increasing uptake and very little in

So, everything seems to be very positive, and in fact we are already looking at adding additional product groups to the TruckTEC range, and hope to be able to make one or two announcements about that in the new-year. “TruckTEC effectively closes the loop for us in terms of branding and market positioning and we clearly see the brand as being a strong part of our drive to establish the collective G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK, TOP TRUCK and TruckTEC brands as industry leaders in the commercial vehicle maintenance markets, both here in the UK, and around the world.” For more information: www.trucktecparts.co.uk

he brand, part of the Schaeffler Group, also develops complete repair solutions for the aftermarket, the latest of which is a unique product that makes hub bearing replacement much simpler. But what makes the FAG SmartSET the smart option? Wheel bearing repairs are commonplace in the commercial vehicle (CV) sector, with most truck and trailer axles ďŹ tted with two opposing single tapered rolling bearings. The FAG SmartSet was designed speciďŹ cally for the aftermarket to reduce the problems caused by the tricky installation of traditional TRBs, such as extended downtime and an increased

T

APPROVED SUPPLIER FEATURE

chance of fitting errors. Each SmartSet box contains a pre-greased, pre-assembled and pre-positioned complete hub repair solution plus a pressing tool and detailed instructions. Wheel bearings are a safety-critical component, so to ensure technicians are prepared and able to conduct an efficient repair, Schaeffler has produced two ‘tech tips’ which will help prevent premature failure; before looking at both of these, however, it is important to follow the steps below: t Keep the workplace clean t Use the recommended tools t Check all the surrounding parts, such as hub and axle t Observe the correct tightening torque t Adhere to all installation instructions

“The bearing unit itself is pre-filled with grease, which acts as a start-up lubrication for the bearing.”

Best practice during hub removal When removing the wheel hub, brake disc and drum, for instance during brake repairs, it is very easy for dirt to contaminate standard tapered roller bearings. As a result of this, standard TRBs need to be removed, cleaned and refilled with grease. The wheel hub must also be cleaned and checked for ovality, and the rotary shaft seal must be replaced. Also, every time the wheel hub is removed there is a danger that it can have a negative effect on the service life of standard tapered roller bearings: they can become contaminated; can be lubricated incorrectly, either with too much or too little grease or even with the wrong specification; the seal can be damaged, and it can be difficult to reposition the bearing. The FAG SmartSET effectively removes these potential pitfalls, as the bearings are sealed for life and cannot be contaminated. The added benefit is that installation times are reduced by up to 50% in comparison with fitting a standard tapered roller bearing - saving as much as two hours of labour costs.

ISSUE 17 - APRIL 2018

Pre-lubricated The FAG SmartSET can be used for both grease- or oil-lubricated wheel bearing applications. The bearing unit itself is pre-filled with grease, which acts as a start-up lubrication for the bearing. Once the start-up phase has ended, however, the axle/hub oil takes over. To ensure that the right amount of lubrication has been applied, it is vital that the technician uses the correct oil filling level and specification. The service and replacement intervals, according to each vehicle manufacturer, must also be followed. The FAG SmartSET stands out above standard tapered rolling bearings for many reasons, including all of the following: t Pre-assembled unit - no tricky assembly required t Pre-greased and sealed for life - no chance of contamination t Pre-positioned rollers - no need to turn the wheel when adjusting the tilting tolerance t Assembly support on the inner ring through an elongated conical bore t Dust protection t Durotect® B coating for increased wear protection t Sliding fit with the modified inner ring t Pressing tool included t Up to double the service life of traditional TRBs With 19 different versions already available, and 14 more on the way, covering not just trucks but also trailers (including BPW and Meritor) - the FAG SmartSET really is the smart solution, especially as it comes complete with a comprehensive three-year warranty. SYNERGY PREMIUM BRAKING - WHY MAJOR BUS OPERATORS CHOOSE TO FIT JURATEK ike many in the commercial vehicle industry, UK bus and coach operators are facing ever increasing challenges, with rising costs and more emphasis on safety. Choosing a braking product that is cost effective, safe and durable in all conditions can be a particularly difficult challenge. Commercial vehicles experience a wide spectrum of use in service and this has a direct bearing on the duty to which their brake system is subjected and the operating temperatures that are reached. At one end of the scale, vehicles can be running up and down the motorway hardly ever applying their brakes, others could be constantly stopping and starting, whilst others could be employed as tippers, and yet others could be on routes with long hill descents involving continuous application of the brakes. Brake temperature mapping of these different operating conditions indicates temperatures that can range from the relatively low 200oC under light conditions all the way up to 850oC during long hill descents or urban bus routes. Basic pad grades, which are perfectly suitable up to medium levels of duty, wear at a much faster rate once the operating temperature exceeds 400oC for any length of time. This is where a better, premium, grade of pad, containing higher temperature wear resisting ingredients in its formulation, becomes an advantage, providing the end user with a more cost effective fitment due to its extended pad life. Higher temperatures and speeds can also result in thermal crazing and cracking of the brake disc, resulting in the need for the brake discs to be replaced to ensure safe operation. This is why the compatibility of the pad and disc is important, and needs to be included as a part of the brake pad development process - if the

L

16

pad is too hard or too stiff the braking load and resulting temperature build up will be more localised rather than being distributed uniformly over the braking path leading to “hot spots” on the surface of the disc and eventual rupture (cracking), of the disc surface. The development of brake pads and discs has to recognise, and cater, for all of these possible conditions to ensure that the resulting products that are offered for sale are safe, and durable - it is not really enough to just carry out the mandatory UNECER90 tests which cover the basic braking effectiveness and fade but do not test for performance, durability and compatibility between brake pad and brake disc under the wide range of different service operating conditions. At Juratek, the many thousands of labour hours that go into developing a new product starts with small sample tests; the most promising materials from this work progressing to full scale inertia dynamometer tests at full axle loads. The development objective at this stage is to measure and compare the effectiveness of the development grades with established materials over a range of different speeds, pressures and temperatures. Wear testing at different disc temperatures then follows, together with an assessment of the compatibility of the material

with the brake disc under different operating conditions to ensure the material does not cause thermal crazing, cracking or excessive wear of the disc. The most promising candidates from this work will then undergo field tests before a final selection is made for legal approval and offer for sale. Juratek Synergy products - Synergy Red (Premium) & Synergy Yellow (Premium Plus) both underwent this exhaustive, 24 month development process. Both offer outstanding features and value for money. They have a high performance level, which provides for shorter stopping distances, with excellent stability of performance with speed and pressure, coupled with long pad life and excellent working compatibility with the brake disc. This is why, after extended service trials, Synergy premium braking products are chosen by some of the UK’s largest fleet and bus operators due to their low pad and disc wear and freedom from brake squeal - an important factor in the constant stop-start-stop metro bus world. iper blades are one of the most important maintenance parts for safety on the road. Commercial Vehicle drivers spend a lot of time behind the wheel; therefore quality windscreen wiping is crucial for their well-being, comfort and working conditions. Fleet managers focus on wiper quality and compliance with vehicle specifications to maximise maintenance intervals. SWF, the German wipers specialist with more than 90 years’ of experience, is the leading supplier of original equipment for commercial vehicles in Europe. SWF is No. 1 in OE with more than 100 million wipers manufactured and sold internationally every year.

W

History Founded in 1922, SWF (Spezial Werkzeugfabrik Feuerbach) designs and manufactures quality wiper blades, wiper motors and other wiping components for passenger cars, heavy duty vehicles and buses. Based in Germany, SWF constantly innovates to improve driver’s visibility and safety. In 1998, SWF joined the Valeo Group and in 2000, SWF launched its first Flat Blade on O.E. applications. SWF is always working on future solutions for driver’s visibility. Commercial Vehicle Range Overview The range of conventional wipers consists of 19 references - 16 blades and three adapter kits and covers all vehicle classes on the European Commercial Vehicles market (trucks, buses and vans). The 100% metal structure in conjunction with high-quality connection joints allows for a long service life in all weather conditions. SWF commercial vehicle wiper blades are built with a 100% metal structure and high quality pin assembly, which enables excellent long lasting performance. Rubber blades ensure an optimal, efficient and long-lasting wipe whatever the weather conditions. SWF gives a guarantee of durability, silent wiping and smooth glide, with Duotec + a specific combination of natural and synthetic rubbers with exclusive coating on the lip. The specific rubber profile designed for commercial vehicles allows up to 1 million cycles. All SWF Commercial Vehicle references are fitted with O.E. adaptors to ensure easy and quick installation. Know-how and leading position in the original equipment market, makes “Das Original” Commercial Vehicle wipers range 100% compliant with the O.E. specifications (including washer nozzles and adapters). “100% of SWF blades are tested and approved by experts in various laboratory and on-track tests.”

SWF AquaBlade®

Quality Control 100% of SWF blades are tested and approved by experts in various laboratory and on-track tests. The blades undergo the following testing procedures: cold tearing test, pressure distribution management, measurement of the blade profile, dry mud test, snow wiping test, endurance tests, laboratory tests and track tests for aerodynamic performance. As a leader in wiping systems for Commercial Vehicles, SWF engineers study all weather conditions faced by professionals on the road, and develops equipments and systems allowing them to face all climatic circumstances with maximum visibility - which is key for safety. Communication & Support Valeo Service distributes SWF and provides you with innovative services to animate your sales (displays, videos, fitting instructions and technical services). To see installation instructions, video tips and more, visit the SWF YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/swfperformance AquaBlade® technology Being at the edge of wiping technology development, Valeo introduced the SWF AquaBlade® solution for the first time in O.E. in 2012 AquaBlade is a flat wiper blade that, in contrast to conventional wiper systems, incorporates an integrated cleaning function along the entire length of the wiper blade. Following the successful introduction of the technology in passenger cars, the system is now also in use in several buses. SWF AquaBlade® was designed specifically for the improvement of driving safety and is especially suited to the high demands set by road professionals - e.g. under extreme driving conditions. The integrated nozzles of the SWF AquaBlade® wiper system distribute the cleaning fluid evenly along the entire length of the wiper blade and in time with the wiper arm. Regardless of vehicle speed and the angle of the windshield, the fluid is wiped away directly after being deposited onto the windshield. The driver therefore has only minimal restrictions to visibility, meaning that AquaBlade can make a major contribution to driver safety and ease eye strain, particularly during nighttime driving and in strong sunlight. As the cleaning fluid is deposited in precisely the required amounts onto the desired area of the windshield, its consumption can be reduced by 30%. This means that the tank can be smaller and up to four kilograms of weight can be saved per vehicle. Furthermore, SWF AquaBlade® can also reduce the development time for new vehicle models, because it is no longer necessary to define a dedicated nozzle orientation for each individual model. Valeo can provide AquaBlades and FlatBlades from 35cm to 1 meter. These technologies are currently available only through OE channel. Heated SWF AquaBlade® technology enables the distribution of hot washer fluid across a windshield (PACE Award 2012). For more information: www.valeoservice.co.uk

New technology When BTN started manufacturing exchange units over 40 years ago, turbochargers were fairly simple. As their technology has evolved, so have their expertise and equipment, which is why they continue to remanufacture today’s highly complex and sophisticated turbos under license, to the highest standards, using 100% original parts. As the leading UK distributor for all the main turbo manufacturers, BTN’s remanufacturing facilities have to be second to none. Thorough cleaning The process is full strip down and cleaning, then machining, assembly, balancing and testing. The same staff who break down the units also reassemble them, for continuity. In-depth cleaning takes place in an oven at the exact temperature that is safe for aluminium and cast iron, but hot enough to burn off all the carbon build-up. The carbon dust is removed and the turbo goes through their shot blast machines for ďŹ nal cleaning.

Assembly Assembly takes place in the newly equipped clean area. Because turbos operate at extremely high temperatures and pressures, it is crucial they are properly set up when remanufactured. To achieve this, BTN have invested in state-of-the-art equipment. Their advanced rotor balancer is one of several precision machines that ensure each turbo is correctly aligned. Precise balance They balance the rotor assembly first, then build it up into a cartridge and insert it into the cartridge balancer. The semi-automatic cartridge balancer eliminates the risk of human error, and is faster and more efficient. None of this technology is cheap, but the rest rarely is. All units supplied by BTN carry a two-year warranty which is backed by their famous 12 month ‘No Quibble’ warranty for heavy commercial vehicles. To make sure you benefit from this award-winning standard of service, make sure you order a turbo supplied by BTN Turbo.

hatever the engine, ensuring consistent and effective filtration is vital for any reliable, smooth running operation. Such an essential element of the combustion engine should be an important consideration of any transport manager; investing in poor quality, or worse, counterfeit filters could spell disaster for your fleet. However, with tight margins and constant financial pressure, the temptation to continue to buy cheaper products from a familiar brand is understandable. Why then, should you invest in filtration products by Racor? There are many aspects to consider when asking this question, and it is perhaps a question you had not thought of asking…. Racor is part of Parker Hannifin's Engine & Mobile Filtration Division EMEA (EMFE), a global innovation leader specialising in fuel, air, crankcase and oil filtration systems for internal combustion engines and fuel delivery. Founded in 1969, Racor now has a global presence as a Tier 1 supplier, with products to suit any market or application with an engine. Their extensive product portfolio includes fuel filter water separators, high flow filter vessels, oil filter systems, automatic transmission filters, engine air filters, crankcase ventilation filter systems and many more customised OEM solutions. With over 100 active patents, 45 years of media development, and a range of proprietary technologies, Parker Racor is 100% focused on developing filtration that enables operators to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Racor’s filtration products are manufactured in-house at their state-of-the-art production facilities in North America, as well as their European site in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. the highest international standards. Every Parker Racor filtration product delivered to the independent aftermarket is made with the same materials, design specification and engineering excellence as the original equipment (OE). Counteract the counterfeit As with many industries, counterfeit goods are an ongoing concern in the filter market. Nowadays, there are counterfeiters who sell products purporting to share the same attributes as a Racor filter which is not genuine or an equivalent, and there are those who blatantly counterfeit ie: offer products which appear to be by Racor. While the potential legal consequences of selling such imitation products are severe, it is a testament to how revered the OE quality Racor products are that they are copied so widely. This level of expertise has developed over many years in the industry; experience which money simply cannot buy. Evolution over time Racor’s filtration

technology would not be world leading if it were not for the extensive development which goes into each product, necessary to achieve such standards. At Racor’s high-tech laboratory and testing centre at the Dewsbury site, ongoing investment in research and development is made to continually offer customers better solutions. Every product is fully tested across a strict range of performance criteria in order to ensure the optimal filter solution for each application. Advanced equipment is used, including test rigs to assess water separation, particle removal efficiency, vibration testing, as well as an advanced Engine Test Cell, capable of testing 500KW diesel engines. Steven Wilson, Test & Development Manager, commented: “An idea or concept could take up to two years before it is launched into full product. A programme for a new system may require 20-30 types of tests. This investment in testing enables Racor’s products to be robust, reliable and guarantee that the highest quality of filtration is maintained throughout the life of the product.” For more information: www. parker.com/changingfiltration

he new role of battery The role of battery has changed in recent years from managing simple loads to becoming a high-performance part that is a key component of vehicles. Particularly, requirements on batteries for heavy commercial vehicles are continually growing. “On the one hand, we are facing increasingly strict environmental and safety regulations for trucks,” Thorsten Werle, Design Engineer at Johnson Controls

T

“On the other hand, we have to deal with more and more load and auxiliary demands in today’s trucks. The performance of batteries is crucial to meet all these requirements and - at the same time - to minimise downtime” explained. “On the other hand, we have to deal with more and more load and auxiliary demands in today’s trucks. The performance of batteries is crucial to meet all these requirements and - at the same time - to minimise downtime.” The current trend toward end of frame installation makes great demands on batteries, and only the most vibration-resistant batteries can withstand the shocks. Tests show that five out of six selected batteries are not sufficiently vibration-resistant. Performance demands have greatly increased, so much so that conventional batteries are no longer adequate. This results in a higher rate of failures ranging from failures of individual functions to downtimes that reduce the efficiency of a fleet. These days every fifth truck needs an especially powerful battery. This is already 20% of the market. The market continues to grow, and with it, the need for high vibration resistance, charging capability, and capacity.

ISSUE 17 - APRIL 2018

VARTA Promotive EFB proves technological advantage To meet all these requirements, Johnson Controls has developed the unique VARTA Promotive EFB: a specifically designed battery for high-performance commercial vehicles with heavy cycling use. “The Promotive EFB is one step ahead because of its unique technology,” Werle said. “It is designed for the highest vibration requirements and because of the VARTA proprietary design, including Mixing Element, it keeps charge acceptance at the highest level. Furthermore, this exclusive technology ensures reliable power for all electrical equipment onboard even during rests, which has become essential over the past decade.” Ten years ago, truck drivers stayed on average two nights per week in their trucks; when you compare this to now, an average five nights per week in their truck and a higher number of electrical devices, the demand for electricity has increased significantly. “Today, an overnight stay requires approximately 50% of the battery’s capacity,” Werle explained. “We developed VARTA Promotive EFB especially for these modern requirements. Compared to a conventional battery, the VARTA Promotive EFB has 40% more lifetime. This reduces the risk of downtimes substantially and thereby the service costs of the truck,” Werle said.

Better Batteries - More Service These enhanced batteries require expert knowledge when they are serviced. “Therefore, we have introduced products and services to workshops that help to reduce downtime. We support our partners to further develop into trusted battery experts because eventually, we all want to get the best out of VARTA batteries,” Werle said. Truck drivers also appreciate the benefits of headlamp bulbs that offer up to 100% more light on the road, making driving safer and more comfortable in the knowledge that TRUCKSTAR PRO bulbs will also last the distance.

“Fleet Managers understand the importance of choosing products that are reliable, cost effective and that keep their vehicles on the road.”

How is it possible to achieve both a longer lasting bulb that also gives up to 100% more light on the road? Developments made with the OSRAM computer controlled coiling machines, have made it possible to produce bulb filaments with a single coil instead of the traditional double coil design. These are not only more robust but also give a brighter, more even beam pattern. OSRAM has carried out extensive trials, measuring the vibration and mechanical shock levels that bulbs experience in actual use driving over a wide range

of road surfaces including cobbles, pot-holes and speed bumps. These trials proved that the OSRAM TRUCKSTAR PRO headlight bulbs can withstand the worst punishment that driving on British roads can throw at them. The TRUCKSTAR® PRO range not only provides a solution to the forward lighting of commercial vehicles but also for auxiliary lighting too. The TRUCKSTAR® PRO range includes the most popular and regularly used auxiliary types too. There really are many benefits to fitting OE quality and with OSRAM TRUCKSTAR® PRO you get OE quality as standard plus performance. OSRAM also has the answer for 12V van fleets as well For 12v van fleets and agricultural vehicles, OSRAM can offer the ULTRA LIFE range which offers a four-year guarantee on the halogen types in the range. As with TRUCKSTAR PRO, ULTRA LIFE bulbs are designed to give extra service life and cope with the most serious of applications. Delivery fleets, emergency service fleets, taxi fleets and agricultural vehicles need to keep working around the clock. OSRAM ULTRA LIFE is the perfect choice where downtime just is not an option. or the sake of both the driver and other road users, as well as for the general public, the consequences of such large objects failing to slow down or stop in time, can be grave. It is therefore absolutely crucial that those responsible for the service and repair of commercial vehicles specify and install premium quality components that have been manufactured to exacting specification, to ensure the required standards for braking performance and durability are maintained. Caution should therefore be taken when choosing a braking supplier, as it is not uncommon in today’s price driven market, for less scrupulous suppliers to offer braking components that have a reduced material mass. What this means is that the product will be lighter than the original equipment (OE) equivalent. For example, reducing the weight of the brake drums can only be done by reducing the amount of material used in its manufacture, which by its very nature will make them thinner and less robust and, in the process, significantly compromise their quality and the overall braking performance of the finished component. When it comes to brake discs, similar risks also apply, as less physical material can affect heat dissipation and cause heat build-up, which can lead to the discs failing prematurely.

Two of the five AUX electrical connections now have twin outputs. There are also two CAN bus-based diagnostic ports instead of one. This means two CAN bus systems can be connected without complex external cabling.

“In this way, EB+ Gen3 takes into account the rapidly growing number of wide-ranging systems that communicate with EBS”

ISSUE 17 - APRIL 2018

The number of EBS controlled trailer systems is increasing From trailer lift axles, brake wear sensors, Reset-to-Ride function and Soft Docking to Fleet+, tire pressure monitoring and Info Point, the third generation EB+ is able to integrate considerably more systems than before. In this way, EB+ Gen3 takes into account the rapidly growing number of wide-ranging systems that communicate with EBS. For more infortmation: www.haldex.com

rigade Electronics has worked with Kier Environmental to install CCTV solutions in its refuse vehicles in Walthamstow. The 40-strong 18 to 26 tonne vehicles now have added security measures to ensure greater monitoring and protection. Kier Environmental has a weekly recycling and waste removal contract with Walthamstow Forest Borough Council district, and the decision was made to increase security after its vehicles had suffered damage. In the first four weeks, Kier were able to refute a number of claims. Brigade Electronics, alongside approved fitter TNK Engineering, a mobile service provider of installation and repairs of safety systems, fitted four camera digital recording systems to the refuse vehicles Kier Environmental has in operation. The MDR systems Kier Environmental are using will record after the vehicle ignition has been switched of; this effectively creates a 24 hour CCTV security for the depot. Two of the systems have been set to record on motion detection so that if a vehicle or person is near the vehicle, the MDR will record for up to 30 minutes. The other systems are set to post record so that there is coverage between shifts. Simon Whitelock, Transport Manager for Kier Environmental, said: “For us to manage a London Borough contract, installing added security measures protects all parties; from our frontline fleet, to cyclists. “The installation of the equipment was effective and we are already seeing the benefits. The standard and efficiency of the work carried out by TNK Engineering was impressive.” Brigade Electronics is a leading supplier of safety devices, with solutions to suit all commercial vehicle types. Through 40 years of expertise, Brigade has developed a comprehensive range of products to reduce the risk of collision and maximise efficiency, assisting the driver whilst also protecting vulnerable road users. Brigade’s brand is synonymous with quality and all product goes through rigorous testing over and above industry standards to ensure reliability.

B

Brigade’s product portfolio includes: Camera Monitor Systems

Ultrasonic Detection Sensors

Brigade’s Sidescan® and Cornerscan® range are ideal for detecting cyclists and providing the driver with a warning to check their nearside blind spot. Combined with Backchat®, the system can provide a real speech warning to the cyclist: “Caution truck turning left”. Digital Recorders

Brigade’s new 4G and Wi-fi capable MDR systems enable operators to log in remotely to check a vehicle’s location or review footage in the event of a collision without having to remove the hard drive. The range includes four channel recorders with a 500Gb hard drive and an eight channel 1TB model each with 1164 hours recording time. Radar Obstacle Detection Systems

Brigade has an extensive range of camera monitor systems for all application types. Brigade’s Backeye®360 is the ultimate camera system that takes four wide angle camera views and stitches them together to appear as a single image. The image displayed appears as a birds-eye view and eliminates blind spots around a vehicle. Reversing Alarms Brigade’s patented white sound reversing alarms (bbs-tek®) are the safest on the market and are approved by the Noise Abatement Society for use during quiet night time deliveries. Self adjusting bbs-tek® adjusts to 5dB above the ambient noise level.

Brigade’s Backsense® radar is the most affordable on the market with bespoke detection areas of up to 30m in length and 10m in width. The system informs the driver of the distance between the vehicle and obstacles whether moving or stationary. For more information: www.brigade-electronics.com

*/ $"# 4"'&5: 4:45&.4 "3& WELCOMED BY HGV DRIVERS nyone who works in the road safety industry understands the need to be adaptable and open to change. As technology evolves, it is essential to keep a forward-thinking mindset, and Brigade Electronics are always alert to the exciting possibilities of the digital world. Brigade’s products are designed to make commercial vehicles safer on roads and on work sites, using a host of innovations including cameras, radar obstacle detection and warning alarms. Much has been written about the revolution in driverless vehicles. This year, the Department for Transport is trialling a platoon of self-driving lorries on UK motorways, and undoubtedly these vehicles will become a common sight on our roads in the coming decades. But in the short to mid-term future, we will continue to rely on human drivers to transport our goods. The most recent statistics show that HGVs cover over 16 billion miles on British roads every year1, with around 600,000 HGV-licensed drivers currently registered in the UK. Brigade’s safety devices help to prevent collisions by assisting the driver whilst protecting vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. ‘Assist’ is the key word. It is understandable that some truckers, perhaps with decades of experience, worry that new technology might interfere with their tried-and-tested driving habits. The reality is that, following a simple training process, drivers very quickly adapt to the use of in-cab visual displays and audio warning alarms, and find them an invaluable aid in helping to eliminate blind spots. A complete camera system, such as the Brigade BackeyeŽ360, is designed to assist low-speed manoeuvring by providing the driver with a complete surround view of the vehicle in real time. Four ultra-wide cameras capture footage of surroundings and are simultaneously processed and stitched together. The result is a single real-time 360o image of the vehicle on the driver’s monitor, eliminating blind spots and the need to check and process several mirrors or monitors in quick succession. When drivers are asked for their

feedback on a product such as the BackeyeŽ360, the typical response is overwhelmingly positive. Terry Grieveson, a driver from North Kent Distribution, said: “Glancing at a blind spot camera is no distraction at all. The view that it gives makes such a difference, especially when reversing in congested town centres. It is surprising how quickly the technology becomes second nature. Now I cannot imagine driving without BackeyeŽ360 and the peace of mind that it offers. Brigade’s latest generation of BackeyeŽ360, the BN360-200 model, is an upgraded version of the existing BN360 system, giving users even greater camera view options. The layout on the monitor has been improved to increase the image size by 22%, regardless of monitor size, making blind spots even more visible to the driver. Perhaps one day we will live in a world where driverless vehicles are the norm on our roads, and urban incidents involving pedestrians, cyclists and other road users will be a distressing memory of the past. But until that day, our HGV drivers are able to benefit from the safety technology on the market today. WHEN TO ADJUST SACHS TWIN-PLATE CLUTCH WEAR COMPENSATORS

eavy vehicles, extreme loads, arduous terrain, constant manoeuvring or frequent hill starts are just some of the reasons that a twin-plate clutch (Fig. 1) may be specified. By doubling the number of friction surfaces and adding an intermediate plate, the twin-plate clutch gains greater torque-handling ability and increased capacity for heat absorption. This in turn enables it to cope with the type of usage that could cause a single-plate clutch to wear prematurely or burn out. Using two clutch driven plates also provides two sets of torsional vibration dampers, which helps to reduce noise and stress in the powertrain. While replacement procedures are broadly

similar to those of a single-plate unit, a twin-plate clutch also features an additional control system in the form of controlledrelease slide assemblies, commonly referred to as wear compensators. Built into the clutch cover, these are essential to the reliable operation and durability of the clutch. The purpose of the wear compensators is to ensure that uniform clearances are maintained between the friction and mating surfaces throughout the working life of the clutch, so that both driven plates release fully when the clutch pedal is operated. Some confusion may arise as to whether it is necessary to adjust the wear compensators when fitting a Sachs twin-plate clutch, as there are three different designs of wear compensator used: T-slide, L-slide and rocker. Two of these require adjustment after fitting the clutch, while the third does not - and making the wrong decision can lead to drivability problems. It is therefore important to establish which of the three types is fitted on the clutch before installation. The slide types need their initial position set by the workshop technician after the cover assembly has been bolted to the flywheel, but the rocker type requires no adjustment.

and require the initial position of the slides to be set. Failure to correctly adjust these will cause problems with gear shifting, as the engine-side driven plate may not release. Adjustment must be carried out only after installation of the clutch assembly to the flywheel - for the sake of clarity, the photographs illustrating the procedures are shown with the clutch out of the vehicle.

mechanism. Repeat the process on the remaining two slides - all three must be adjusted correctly to ensure that both driven plates will release. L-slide

into the pressure plate. These are sometimes wrongly assumed to be transport bolts and removed, a temptation that should be strongly resisted. Fig 4: Adjusting the L-slide wear compensator

Fig 2: Adjusting the T-slide wear compensator

Using a hammer and drift through the hole provided above the wear compensator, carefully tap the slide towards the flywheel (Figs. 2 & 3). There will be an obvious change in feel and sound as the slider moves past the friction material and contacts the stop. A few gentle taps is all that is required; heavy or prolonged hammering may damage the

To adjust an L-slide wear compensator, use a suitable lever to move each of the sliders away from the flywheel up to the intermediate plate (Fig. 4). It is perhaps also worth noting here that some clutches using the L-slide type of wear compensator are designed with bolts passing through the diaphragm spring

“It is perhaps also worth noting here that some clutches using the L-slide type of wear compensator are designed with bolts passing through the diaphragm spring into the pressure plate.”

Fig 3: T-slide wear compensator adjustment detail

Rocker type wear compensator The rocker type wear compensator (Fig. 5) is the preferred design for later twin-plate clutches. It has a fixed setting that must not be changed and therefore requires no adjustment by the technician after fitting. However, the gap between the operating elements of the wear compensator is sometimes assumed to be due to movement during transit, which needs ‘correcting’ before fitting the clutch. This has come to light through instances of Sachs twin-plate clutches being returned to ZF Services UK under warranty, where it is obvious that a well-meaning technician has closed up the gap. The presence of the gap is perfectly normal before fitting, and will reduce to the correct clearance as the cover is bolted down to the flywheel. Any interference with the factory setting will cause the driven plates not to release properly. In summary On older design twin-plate clutches fitted with T-slide or L-slide wear compensators, adjust these after fitting the clutch. For later clutches fitted with the rocker type of compensator, no adjustment is required. For more information: www.zf.com/uk
