TWO WINS ON WELSH WEEKEND AIDS WOOD’S TITLE PUSH With two wins and a strong third at Pembrey, Lea Wood gave his push for the Pickup Truck Racing title a major boost

aving set fourth and third best times in wet qualifying sessions, Wood started from fourth on the grid for the first of the weekend’s three races. It was still wet as the grid assembled, but when the lights went out, he soon slotted into third behind David O’Regan and Mark Cooper. Having ousted Cooper exiting Hatchets on lap three, he began to threaten O’Regan’s lead as they both eased themselves well clear of the rest of the field. By the end of lap five the gap was only 0.323s, but patience paid off two laps later, not only snatching the lead on the inside of the new chicane, but quickly consolidating to secure the win, leaving O’Regan to duel with reigning Champion Scot Bourne. “I had the new tyres on and managed to get a break, but there was a river across the start and finish line and they had nearly cancelled he race,” Wood explained. It was still damp for race two, but Wood and Bourne had both fought passed early leader Dale Gent by the end of lap two. On this occasion Bourne couldn’t stick with Wood’s pace and the lead quickly exceeded two seconds and continued to grow. Having peaked at over three seconds, Wood backed off slightly in the closing laps, but Bourne still had pace and began to close the gap again, leaving Wood to manage a still fairly comfortable

lead over Bourne, to secure win number two of the weekend. It was finally both dry and bright for the final race, but Wood had a fight on his hands. For the first five laps he was fifth behind O’Regan, having started from sixth on the part reversed grid. Having finally got by on lap six, Mark Willis was the next target, but it took another two laps to breach his defence. “I managed to get him at Brooklands Hairpin, but it was hard he can be very defensive, with all that experience,” said Wood. With Michael Smith retiring on lap 10, fourth became third, but the gap to second place Bourne was still three seconds at the flag, with winner Gent a further three clear. “Thoroughly pleased with the whole weekend, over the moon. We are back into second into the Championship and now need to just go for wins to try and beat Scott to the title,” he concluded.

WOOD’S A WINNER BUT JUST MISSES OUT ON PICKUP TRUCK TITLE Although Lea Wood beat Pickup Truck title rival Scott Bourne in the first two races of the Brands Hatch finale, third place in race two was still enough to give Bourne his title.

“The BTRA Trucks had been on track before us and made it very greasy, so I made sure I was very careful.”

“It was a real battle to get to the front though.”

fter being first and fourth in the two qualifying sessions, Wood started the opening race of the weekend from third on the grid, due to the reverse grid system, but was already up to second on the opening lap, before ousting early leader David O’Regan. But only 0.488 seconds covered the top three, with O’Regan having to defend from Lee Rogers. “It was a real battle to get to the front though,” said Wood. The lead duo managed to break clear, but were still locked together. O’Regan was back in front after five laps and although Wood retook again a lap later the gap remained at just over 0.5 seconds, with Wood the victor, as Bourne slipped to fifth. “David got by on the Cooper Straight, but we were so close, that I was able to retake him into Druids. I just couldn’t shake him off though,” said the Hereford driver. In the second race Wood was into fourth as they exited Graham Hill Bend on the opening lap, but quickly became embroiled in a huge scrap, which enabled the lead trio to escape. “The BTRA Trucks had been on track before us and made it very greasy, so I made sure I was very careful, but it was a hectic first lap,” he added. It became any one from four, but by the end of lap six Wood was down to sixth place: “I knew I needed to up my game after Lee Rogers had spun right in front of me losing more time,” he

explained. All 23 Pickups barrelled into Paddock Hill Bend for the 16th time and Bourne had challenged O’Regan for second place and both ran wide after a slight touch and Wood exited Druids in third place, which became second when with Paul Tompkins spun at Cascades. The last three laps were tremendously close, with Wood keeping Bourne and O’Regan at bay to battle it out themselves, but that was enough to settle the title in Bourne’s favour.“I decided to go defensive and was just trying to back Bourne up to David O’Regan,” he said. Any hopes of a second win were soon dashed in the third and final race of the weekend and the final one of the season. As the field plunged out of Paddock Hill Bend on the opening lap, Mark Willis spun and Wood was forced to drive through the gravel trap in avoidance. The safety car was out for the clean-up, but Wood was back on, last place on the road with a daunting recovery. By lap nine he was back in the top 10 and continued to close in, snatching eighth from Dale Gent on the last lap, consolidating his second place in this year’s championship. “Overall the season has been great for me. I am pleased to finish second, but not winning the title is obviously a slight disappointment. The blown engine when I was leading at Snetterton was our turning point, without that circumstances would have been a lot different,” he concluded.

THE SUN SHINES ON CAUSEWAY COAST TRUCKFEST 2018 THE TEAM AT ENGINE & TRUCK (NI) MADE A SPLASH WITH THEIR DEBUT IN PORTSTEWART he Newbridge Restaurant Causeway Coast Truck Festival came back bigger than ever this year. Taking place in Portstewart, Northern Ireland on 19 August, the show saw some of the finest show and working trucks from across the United Kingdom take the stage and compete to win 25 top prizes, including Best Vintage, Best Tractor Unit and Best Light Commercial, as well as the most celebrated prize of all; Truck of the Show. In attendance at this year’s show was Engine & Truck (N.I), a key supplier of automotive components for the commercial vehicle, passenger car and light commercial market. Based in Belfast, the company traded in Northern Ireland as Edmund’s Walker for over 60 years until the switch to Engine & Truck (N.I) Ltd in 2002.

T

“This was our first time at the Causeway Coast Truckfest,” said Director Michael Evans. “When exhibiting at this kind of event, you hope for a consistently busy stand and to speak to a diverse mix of people from all walks of life, all with a shared passion. Such was the case for us today. This event has been an excellent opportunity for us to engage with fleet operators, owner drivers and truck enthusiasts alike.” To stand out from the crowd at busy trade events, it is important to have an eye-catching stand with plenty to offer visitors. As a G-TRUCK & UAN TRUCK member, Engine & Truck were supplied with product marketing support and merchandise by parts distributor CV LOGIX, part of the Alliance Automotive Group. “Using informal marketing and advertising materials, we were able to connect and

have meaningful dialogue with new and existing customers from across the industry,” commented Michael. “Getting your name out into the marketplace is so important and, with the help of CV LOGIX, the Causeway Coast Truckfest has proven to be exactly the occasion we were looking for.” “Great thanks must be given to Martin Sangster from the Alliance Automotive Group, as well as Samantha Sangster and Kevin O’Sullivan from Thomas Group, for all their help on the day,” concluded Michael. The event culminated in a truck convoy along the North Coast. Now in its fourth year, the Causeway Coast Truckfest raised £42,591.12 on the day in aid of Air Ambulance Northern Ireland. his year the Alliance Automotive Group UK brought the entire group together to stage one of the industry’s biggest automotive events. On 4-5 October, over 2000 delegates from the GROUPAUTO & UAN trading groups and the Top Truck, AutoCare and United Garage Services garage networks attended the two-day event at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool.

Motor Factor Trade Show The Motor Factor Trade Show opened its doors to LV and CV member businesses from GROUPAUTO & UAN trading groups, many of whom had stayed over the night before and joined us at PanAm Bar on Albert Dock, for an informal buffet and drinks to get the event off to a good start. Throughout the day, over 150 of the groups’ approved suppliers were exhibiting, running offers and competitions designed to entice the

delegates to their stand. As usual exhibitors had gone to great lengths to showcase their brands in elaborate and engaging ways; from magicians and interactive games to software demos and competitions. This year the Stand of the Year award was presented to BM Catalysts for their impressive use of the stand space. In the CV Zone, 47 commercial vehicle suppliers showcased what they have to offer to G-Truck and UAN Truck members. On the CV LOGIX stand the team were promoting the special show offers and the TruckTEC Spin 2 Win prize wheel, where delegates had the chance to win numerous prizes including; Samsung Galaxy smart watches, pick-up truck racing tickets, coffee machines and TruckTEC branded apparel. As the Motor Factor Trade Show closed, members made their way to the conference session for an update on the progress of their trading groups, whilst exhibitors made the necessary changes to their stand ready for the Garage Trade Show the following day. After the conference session, guests made their way back to their hotels to get ready for the evening. Coaches picked delegates up from their hotels and made the short transfer to Anfield Liverpool FC where they enjoyed a ‘street food’ style buffet and entertainment, including a magician, a digital caricature artist and the chance to have their photo taken with Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar.

Garage Trade Show This was the first year that all three garage networks - Top Truck, AutoCare and United Garage Services - came together to experience the annual garage event. Over 1200 delegates attended the garage show and the buzz around the hall was fantastic all day. On the Garage Networks stand they ran a competition to win a Dolce Gusto Coffee Machine and year’s supply of coffee capsules; to win delegates had to guess how many coffee pods were in the box. The lucky winner, who guessed the exact amount correctly, was Stephanie Stanton from AutoCare garage Carlton Coalville Service Station in Lowestoft. It was also an AutoCare garage who won the Bosch garage competition. The competition was open to all delegates, all they had to do was fill out an entry form on the Bosch stand. bundle worth over £700. After the garage trade show, delegates made their way to the garage networks’ conference sessions. In the Top Truck Conference workshops heard how the group would be driving forward in 2019 whilst listening to feedback from Top Truck workshops – valuable feedback to help grow the network and bring the partnership between the workshops and the Top Truck programme closer. Great progress was made as we all look forward to next year. After the Garage Trade Show, over 730 guests attended the Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony which was held at the ACC Liverpool. It was a glistening ceremony to round off a spectacular event. On the evening guests raised £6000 in the Ben charity fundraiser and won some fantastic prizes. After the three-course dinner the winners of the annual awards were announced, before the evening was played out by tribute band 21st Century Swing. Overall the event was a big success and feedback following the event has been very positive. We would like to thank everybody who attended the event and helped make it the biggest and best yet. 2018 Supplier of the Year Winners • UK TRADING GROUPS’ SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR - Exol • CV SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR - CV LOGIX • CV LOGIX SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR Haldex 2018 Member of the Year Winners • G-TRUCK MEMBER OF THE YEAR - NE Truck Spares Ltd (NETS) • UAN TRUCK MEMBER OF THE YEAR – Partic Motor Spares Ltd • GROUPAUTO LV MEMBER OF THE YEAR (UP TO £3M PURCHASES) - GL Motor Factors Ltd • GROUPAUTO LV MEMBER OF THE YEAR (£3M+ PURCHASES) - All Vehicle Parts Ltd • UAN LV MEMBER OF THE YEAR (UP TO £3M PURCHASES) - Car Parts Express Ltd • UAN LV MEMBER OF THE YEAR (£3M+ PURCHASES) - Autosupplies (Chesterfield) Ltd 2018 Garage Award Winners • UNITED GARAGE SERVICES GARAGE OF THE YEAR - Robert Thompson Garage Services

I would particularly like to thank Martin and Rod and the G-truck team for nominating our business for this award and support over the years. NETS was a founder member of G-Truck and we have always been very active in utilising what the group has to offer. It’s fair to say it has helped our business offer commercial fleets and repairers the huge range of quality Original Equipment products we do today. More recently we have used the CV LOGIX warehouse to purchase some strategic brands and this has enabled us to increase the speed of restocking our locations. Finally I would like to thank everyone at NETS for all their hard work and continued support in making us successful as we head into our 45th anniversary year. James Reed NE Truck Spares Ltd (NETS)

CV LOGIX SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR – Haldex CV LOGIX SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR “I want to start by saying it’s a great honour and a massive surprise to have been awarded ‘Supplier of the Year’ by CV Logix for 2018. We’re naturally very proud of this achievement. Since reaching an agreement in July 2017 for our product to be stocked in CV Logix we have worked very closely with the group to ensure we are an attractive option for all the members. We received criticism from other sections of the industry when news broke that we would be supporting the CV Logix venture, but I’m really pleased we have. Our objective was to improve availability and affordability of the Haldex products to the member network. Previously we had no real transparency of where demand for our product was being generated and so as a sales organisation that makes it very difficult to identify areas of opportunity and importantly, areas for improvement. Working closely with CV Logix we have this information readily available to us which means we can be a better supplier for the members. We can identify if a specific member is purchasing - or not purchasing - a specific range of products which perhaps indicates the need for product training. We can identify if there is a trend of specific products being in higher demand in certain geographical regions, allowing us to approach those members and make stock recommendations. Essentially, we have much more informed data now which we decide how to act upon and then discuss with CV Logix. We continually review the stock profile within CV Logix as well as the sell-out prices to the members, both being critical elements in ensuring the members can benefit from CV Logix in the way it’s intended. As a result, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of members now using CV Logix with 70 members across the group now using the warehouse for Haldex products on a regular basis. Over 20,000 Haldex products have been shipped out of CV Logix since the start of this year, with an average of 3000 units per month now leaving the warehouse to reach the members. In the first month of trading from CV Logix the total unit sales were only 460 so it really shows the increase in demand we’ve experienced, and we’ve had to ensure we’ve been reactive to this increase to keep the stock levels sufficient. The challenge for us now is to not only maintain the standards we’ve been awarded for but to continue to improve. We have several promotions planned for the members in the coming months and will look to continue to do this moving forward in 2019. I’m also aware that there are many members purchasing our product that we haven’t yet had a chance to meet with and so this will also be a focus for us, to improve

EGERTON’S FLEET SERVICES NAMED TOP TRUCK WORKSHOP OF THE YEAR 2018

TRADING GROUP NEWS

“I’m still getting over the shock,” said Director Len Egerton gerton’s Fleet Services Ltd has been named the TOP TRUCK Workshop of the Year 2018. The Milton Keynes-based commercial vehicle workshop is the first ever recipient of the award as part of GROUPAUTO International’s TOP TRUCK network of commercial vehicle workshops across Europe. “I am still getting over the shock to be honest,” said Director Len Egerton. “I did not realise we were the first to receive this award.” What began as Len working out of a single van has, over the past 16 years, grown to a major commercial workshop which incorporates an Authorised Testing Facility (ATF) and an experienced team of motivated and capable engineers. A key benefit of Egerton’s becoming a part of the TOP TRUCK network has been that all certified workshops must be accredited under the Institute of Road Transport Engineers’ irtec Licensing Scheme within six months of joining the programme. The irtec licence certifies the skills, safety and technical competence of garage technicians in line with industry requirements. This certification subsequently becomes an endorsement of a workshop and a key differentiator in the market. “Through our commitment to training and listening to what their customers want and need, we have built up a reputation locally and now, with the TOP TRUCK brand behind us, are starting to be recognised on a much wider scale,” commented Len. TOP TRUCK workshops are also encouraged to follow a comprehensive and ongoing technical training programme with leading training providers. This programme not only provides technicians with technical expertise but also effective tools for managing their businesses. Furthermore, the TOP TRUCK Apprenticeship Programme gives garages the platform to train and develop new staff. The programme is fully supported by GROUPAUTO and approved supplier Valeo, so the only financial obligation for the workshop is the apprentice’s weekly wage. “It was an honour to receive the TOP TRUCK

Workshop of the Year Award 2018,” added Len. “Having recently invested in our staff, extending our workshop and installing the ATF, [this award] confirms that despite the time and investment it has taken to get to where we are, we are on the right track. “We are now able to offer a one-stop-shop with everything including servicing and maintenance through to running defects, callout service, DPF terraclean service, brake testing, headlight alignment, MoT and of course nationwide cover through the UK-wide TOP TRUCK network.” Attending the recent TOP TRUCK event gave Len and the team the opportunity to learn how other independent garages operate within the network.

True Heroes Racing sponsorship for injured service personnel Egerton’s Fleet Services been sponsoring True Heroes Racing for five years. True Heroes Racing is the brain child of Phil Spencer, a Royal Navy sailor who has served several Tours of Duty in Afghanistan and has thankfully returned uninjured. However, for the many UK service personnel who are not so fortunate, Phil decided to try and use competitive motorsport as a way of restoring their “sense of direction and focus”. In 2012, True Heroes Racing was born. Len said: “Phil got in touch with us in 2014. The team needed an organisation to carry out maintenance, servicing and MoT of their team truck to allow them to travel around and attend events across the country. How could we say no?” Egerton’s Fleet Services’ TOP TRUCK membership has enabled the business to offer a high-end service for its customers, experience continuous growth, achieve outstanding awards success and also give back to those in need. THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY HELPING TO PREVENT BUS ACCIDENTS BUS INJURIES AND FATALITIES COULD BE GREATLY REDUCED IF COMPANIES FITTED INNOVATIVE STATE-OF-THE-ART ON-BOARD SAFETY SYSTEMS illions of us rely on buses every day - either to travel to and from work or school, or simply as a convenient way to get around without taking the car and paying expensive parking fees. While bus transport remains a relatively safe means of travel, thousands of injuries occur every year and people are killed. In London alone, 25 people were killed on or by buses between 2015 and 2017, and two thirds of these were pedestrians. Nearly 12,000 people were injured over the same period. The high number of casualties prompted TfL (Transport for London) to launch a bus safety programme in 2016, aiming to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in bus related incidents by 70% by 2022. It hopes to reduce the number of fatalities to zero by 2030. TfL’s initiative for London, which includes looking at improving buses’ mirror design and emergency braking systems, does not go far enough for some. Greater London Authority assembly member Keith Prince labelled the programme as “not ambitious enough”, adding: “TfL’s efforts appear largely focused on improving emergency braking, but technology exists that eliminates blind spots and can be retro-fitted to buses.”

M

Challenging circumstances Bus drivers face a uniquely stressful set of challenges. As well as frequent distractions

20

and interruptions from passengers and control centres, drivers have to manoeuvre a 12-tonne vehicle around often busy streets, avoiding pedestrians, cyclists and other road users; and all while trying to ensure their service runs on time. Technology can help Blind spots can create particularly dangerous situations for bus drivers and vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. But road safety experts have now developed state-of-the-art technology which makes drivers aware of everything

going on around their vehicles, helping to avoid collisions and keeping passengers and other road users safe. For example, Brigade Electronics’ best-selling Backeye®360, is an intelligent four-camera system designed to eliminate blind spots. Unlike the on-board CCTV cameras of old, which required the driver to keep tabs on multiple screens, Backeye®360 provides the driver with a complete 360 degrees view of the vehicle in a single image. The system combines images from ultra-wide angle cameras, resulting in a ‘bird’s-eye-view’ of the vehicle and surrounding area. This is essential when manoeuvring, especially in urban areas, to reduce the risk of collisions with people and objects. The use of internal cameras for recording can help drivers to ensure passengers are safe, as well as providing valuable video footage in the event of a criminal investigation - unfortunately another challenge faced by modern-day bus drivers. Other technology that can benefit bus operators includes reversing warning alarms to alert pedestrians, cyclists and other road users that a bus or coach is reversing. The latest technology uses high-spec multi-frequency broadband technology, creating a ‘ssh-ssh’ sound, which is gentle on the ear and can only be heard in the danger zone. Unlike traditional ‘beep beep’ alarms, these White Sound® alarms eliminate noise nuisance while providing the ultimate in safety. For more information: www.brigade-electronics.com

MORRIS LUBRICANTS AMBASSADOR OFFERS A GUIDING HAND TO CAR BUYING IN NEW TV SERIES hoosing between a modern vehicle or a classic car can be a difficult decision. The benefits of the latest technology versus the beauty of a classic. It can be a choice between head and heart. Thankfully, Morris Lubricants ambassador Rebecca Jackson is on hand, presenting a new series on TV channel Dave where, together with Elo King (the owner and founder of The London Motor Museum), she will guide confused buyers to find their ideal car. Modern Wheels or Classic Steals will air for 20 episodes and promises to be entertaining television. The channel has picked Rebecca to help front its new automotive show due to her extensive expertise, not just in her racing career but also her knowledge of the new and used car market. With 11 years running a car sales business, which she built singlehanded from scratch, together with extensive vehicle reviewing experience - over 40 brand new cars every year since 2011 - the programme is certainly in safe hands. “I’m very excited to have a show on Dave!” said Rebecca. “Shooting 20 episodes was a lot of fun, Dave is a great channel, and I can’t wait to see the results of our hard work. “The entire show was great to film, and I loved every minute working on it. I really enjoy giving people ‘Rebecca Racer Hot Laps’, and I was lucky enough to give our buyer a few of these in a Lamborghini Gallardo. She absolutely loved it! It’s really rewarding seeing and hearing the pleasure someone has when I am driving them fast on the circuit.”

Non-stop This year has been very busy for Rebecca. “It’s been a great year so far, and I have very much enjoyed working with all the different companies in the Rebecca Racer family of brands,” she comments. “As well as events with Morris Lubricants, I have shot car and road safety videos with Pertemps Driver Training, M6 Toll videos and am working with Tropic Soul promoting healthy tropical smoothies. I’ve also shot a large proportion of the 40 video reviews I am doing for ‘What Car?” One small part of this hectic year, and Rebecca’s work with Morris Lubricants was a visit to the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Shrewsbury. There, she took part in a meeting with the company’s sales force, seeing the company’s sense of fun working through every vein of its operations. “The amount of laughter was certainly a standout moment from this meeting!” Rebecca said. “It was a serious meeting, and everyone means business, but if you can laugh and be positive throughout this, then you are definitely winning. And the Morris Lubricants team was a delight to spend the day with; there were great ideas, everyone had a voice yet this

was interjected with laughter and jokes. I would call this the perfect atmosphere! “I have very much enjoyed working with Morris Lubricants so far. I love seeing the logo on my race cars, thoroughly enjoyed giving the talk at Automechanika Birmingham and it was great to take part in a charity event showing off Modern Herbie. We still have lots more that we are doing as well.” The future While some may look to slow down after a busy year, Rebecca is focusing on doing even more in the years to come. Alongside another series of Modern Wheels or Classic Steals to film, before the first series has even aired, In addition to this, she is also talking to the production company about another television project, meaning she will be on our screens for a long time to come. Alongside this, there is more work with What Car? and an inspirational range of children’s products and race retreats to be launched. And of course, there is a continued relationship with Morris Lubricants. As Rebecca says: “It’s exciting times!” Modern Wheels or Classic Steals is on Mondays at 8pm on Dave and available to catch-up on UKTV Play. For more information: www.morrislubricants.co.uk

febi TRUCK KEEPS YOUR ENGINE COOL Engine thermal management is key to ensuring a combustion engine can operate and function properly, within the required temperature window.

T

o prevent the engine overheating and causing serious damage, the engine cooling system dissipates the generated heat into the

environment. Thermal management fulfils the essential task of ensuring engine functionality in all operating and weather conditions. This involves a variety of sensors and other electronics to ensure engines can meet the highest requirements for safety, comfort and economy. By reaching the optimum temperature as quickly as possible, it ensures less pollutants are generated during combustion. febi offers a comprehensive range of products in the field of engine thermal management in tested original equipment quality. In order to ensure reliable engine thermal management, the manufacturer’s specified maintenance intervals should be strictly adhered to, and emphasis should be placed on ensuring replacements are carried out when necessary, with only the highest quality products. febi Truck supplies an extensive range of products in OE matching quality, where all parts undergo stringent testing to ensure performance.

output can be reduced by up to 50%, saving engine power. Conventional water pumps can only run on full power. Nearly 10,000 water pumps are manufactured annually at the company headquarter in Ennepetal, using modern, CNC machines. This equates to roughly 15% of the complete water pump range available. febi Truck’s manufacturing competence ensures only high quality products are available, adhering to strict quality standards to provide precision fit and long service life. With over 15,000 applications, febi Truck offers an extensive range for the “big 7” European commercial vehicle manufacturers. For more information: www.trucks.febi-parts.com

Electromagnetic water pumps manufactured in-house at febi Truck headquarters If the vehicle is cold when started, no cooling is required. However, higher cooling output is required when the engine is under high loads. Sensors detect the vehicle status and the engine management can calculate the necessary cooling power. The electromagnetic water pump allows this control, and can adapt depending on the situation. The benefits of this include saving up to 1.5% of fuel, and reducing emissions. Plus, if the water pump is not needed, the

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE COPPER-FREE FRICTION MATERIALS n early 2015 an agreement was signed in the USA by automotive representatives, state officials and environmental agencies to reduce the use of copper and other materials in motor vehicle brake pads. The agreement calls for reducing copper in brake pads to <5% (by weight) by 2021, and 0.5% by 2025. In addition to copper, this voluntary initiative reduces mercury, lead, cadmium, asbestiform fibres, and chromium-six salts in motor vehicle brake pads. The initiative was put in place to decrease runoff of these materials from roads into streams, rivers, and lakes. Copper from water runoff can have a detrimental effect on fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and plant life. Setting a new standard, and opening a worldwide debate on the use of such material, there is no doubt that the development of copper-free eco-friendly brake-friction material is one area of change that will significantly impact future brake development. One company that has already sat up and noticed is Polish based, Lumag - suppliers of OE quality brake pads and drums for commercial vehicles, and the leading BRECK brand of brakes for passenger vehicles. The company has confirmed that efforts are currently being made to replace copper using novel conducting rock-fibres and thermographite. In line with the US Initiative, Lumag

JOHNSON CONTROLS LAUNCHES EUROPE’S FIRST TRUCK AGM BATTERY t Automechanika 2018 in Frankfurt, Johnson Controls introduced a Europe-wide premiere that underlines its strong sense for industry needs. The launch of Europe’s first truck AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery under the VARTA brand marks the next step in minimising the operational cost of trucks and increasing the comfort for drivers.

A

Empowering logistics: Europe’s first truck AGM battery A high demand for non-stop transport services require trucks to be on the road every day. This change in long-haul trucking makes improved cabin infrastructure vital to enhance the quality of work and life on the road. One feature to make scheduled stops and overnights more comfortable is

42

a parking cooler. Many original equipment manufacturers are now offering trucks equipped with an integrated parking cooler and many fleet managers retrofit existing trucks with a parking cooler to offer better working conditions. In addition, new regulations on higher emission standards put additional pressure on fleets to achieve an eco-friendlier footprint. Having already introduced the VARTA Promotive EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) to power the ever increasing electrical components, cope with end of frame mounting and meet the stricter CO2 regulations, vehicle manufacturers are requesting an even higher performing battery, in particular to cater for parking coolers. The VARTA Promotive AGM battery increases the battery cycling capabilities by six times compared to conventional battery solutions, and provides the ability to operate at levels of

discharge close to 80%. “The VARTA Promotive AGM battery allows fleet managers to minimise total cost of ownership by avoiding vehicle downtime and maximizing profitability”, explains Guido Schneider, vice president Sales Europe, Johnson Controls Power Solutions. It also guarantees hoteling while the engine is turned off, which creates more comfortable overnight conditions for truck drivers. “The VARTA Promotive AGM provides confidence that drivers will not have any difficulties getting back on the road”, explains Schneider. MANN-FILTER: INNOVATIONS IN OE QUALITY ANN-FILTER presents expanded FreciousPlus cabin air filter range for trucks and buses

M

• Innovative filter binds allergens, preventing growth of bacteria and mold by over 98%. • Almost 100 percent of the tiniest particulate matter in the PM2.5 range is removed. • Available from European retailers from Automechanika 2018 onwards According to a new World Health Organization (WHO) survey, more than 90% of all people worldwide suffer from poor air quality, whether they live in cities or rural areas. Furthermore, the WHO warns that allergies are a serious health hazard that must be taken seriously. Europe-wide, some 60 million people are affected by allergies. The figure for Germany alone is 20 to 30 million citizens, and the trend is rising. In commercial vehicles as well, allergic reactions due to pollen, bacteria and mold are on the increase among susceptible professional drivers. To ensure that affected drivers can breathe freely at their workplace, filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL launched the innovative FreciousPlus cabin air filter, which is now also available for commercial vehicles, under

46

its MANN-FILTER product brand. This binds allergy-triggering substances, so-called allergens, and prevents bacteria and mould from reaching the driver through the ventilation system. In the independent automotive aftermarket, the new cabin air filter is available in the customary OE quality for 2.4 million trucks in Europe, including, for example, the MANN-FILTER FP 32 001 for the Mercedes-Benz Actros and the FP 4795 for most MAN commercial vehicles. The MANN-FILTER FP 50 001, for example, is available for buses featuring Spheros REVO roof air conditioning systems. Innovative filter formula for protection against allergens, bacteria, mould and particulate matter Contaminated air in the vehicle interior represents a high risk

for professional drivers. Not only allergic reactions, but also tiredness and impaired concentration, which increase the risk of accidents, can be the consequences. The FreciousPlus cabin air filter from MANN-FILTER improves the air quality thanks to three different layers. In addition to coarse particles such as dust and tyre abrasion, its particle filter layer eliminates harmful particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters of under 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5). These tiny particles are approximately 70 times smaller than the width of a human hair and can penetrate deep into the lungs. The second layer contains activated carbon, which is derived from coconut shell. This virtually completely adsorbs unpleasant odours and harmful gases such as nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone

from the airflow. The third layer, an innovative biofunctional special coating, has both an anti-allergenic and anti-microbial effect. Drivers are thus protected against allergens, bacteria and mold in the air conditioning system. Their anti-allergenic function contains a new filter layer through a naturally-sourced polyphenol coating. Polyphenols occur naturally in many plants such as e.g. green tea, pomegranate and citrus fruits, and are able to bind allergens, rendering them harmless. The MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus also looks different to other cabin air filters. It can be easily recognised by the yellow colouring of the polyphenol coating. At www.frecious-plus. com, professional drivers, wholesalers, vehicle fleet operators and workshops can find out all about the new product and its functions online, as well as finding the suitable filters for the relevant vehicles. Workshops and retailers can obtain specialised FreciousPlus training during factory visits. From September 2018 onwards, the MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus for commercial vehicles will be available from European retailers. Further applications and markets are set to follow at a later date. SYNERGY PREMIUM BRAKING FROM JURATEK THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS! t is now 10 years since Juratek became involved in Truck Racing. The superior performance experienced now by over 50% of the BTRA teams, enables them to brake a fraction of a second later on each corner thus giving them a vital edge when competing. “Better than anything I’ve used before”, “Absolutely awesome”, “Better than OE”; these are just some of the many positive comments we receive from the drivers. You might expect this superior performance to come at the expense of durability.

I

50

However, that has not proven to be the case. The Juratek SYNERGY brakes are designed to withstand temperatures in excess of 900°C without excessive wear. It would be wrong to think though, that Juratek pads are specially adapted for racing and would be “over-engineered” for normal highways. This though is not the case. In fact the pads that the teams use are an “off the shelf” product. This fact has been recognised by many domestic bus fleets.

Why are they so popular with large fleets? Braking systems on town centre routes come under a great deal of stress and temperatures can often get as high as 700°C. The common problems encountered are brake fade due to high temperatures, brake noise and short pad life. All of these issues are resolved with the SYNERGY Premium brakes. They provide safe braking, which is of paramount importance coupled with longer pad life, and have enabled the Fleet Managers to save money not only due to the longer service life, but because of the lower unit price. seems like a way of cutting costs may result in even higher longterm costs. As can be seen in the graphic below, these costs could be in reduced life expectancy due to increased pad and disc wear and damage resulting in unplanned downtime, ultimately increasing “cost of ownership”. Costs can be split into two categories; standing costs and running costs. Standing costs are those charges that cannot be avoided whether the vehicle is in use or not. Whereas running costs, as the term suggests, refers to the costs when a vehicle is on the road.

the cost of ownership needs to be understood. Only then can informed decisions be made about the purchase of parts such as commercial vehicle brake pads. It can be easy to purchase parts based on price alone, but in reality purchasing the cheapest brake pad does not necessarily give value for money. Often what

REAL-WORLD SUCCESS CERTIFIES DIESEL 1000 AS THE PREMIUM CHOICE IN FUEL ADDITIVE TRIALS WITH WAKEFIELD COUNCIL HAVE LED TO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN FUEL ECONOMY AND EMISSIONS veryone is entitled to their own opinion of a new product launched on the marketplace. But quantifiable facts gleaned from real-world testing of the product in question are undeniable. That is why the expert fuel chemists behind the DIESEL 1000 fuel additive sought to prove its benefits through collaboration with a major fleet of commercial vehicles in the UK. For the past three months, Wakefield Council in West Yorkshire has been trialling DIESEL 1000 with a fleet of 500 on-highway vehicles across a mix of applications including bus, truck and LCV. Running the very latest Assetworks fleet software, the fleet managers at Wakefield Council have been able to monitor fuel usage, miles per gallon and a range of other metrics, for both individual vehicles and the fleet as a whole. Alongside this, they monitored a cross section of the fleet for emission levels, mindful of their environmental responsibility and focus on reducing carbon footprint. And the results speak for themselves. Analysis of data from over 8800 fuel fill-ups for

BE SAFE, BE SEEN THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHTING articularly in areas that experience a high number of pedestrians or traffic, remaining visible on the roads is essential for the safety of everyone, especially during challenging weather conditions or at night. This means not only do drivers need to see, but they too, need to be visible to others. Over the years, great strides have been made in every area to improve vehicle lighting, an obvious example being the use of LED daytime running lights (DRLs) in order for the vehicle manufacturers (VMs) to conform with the EU Directive to improve vehicle visibility for other road users. Many have taken advantage of the legislation to create a recognisable brand signature using these high intensity lights. Today, many VMs incorporate LED technology throughout their vehicles, which brings benefits for driver and pedestrian alike. LED produces a very natural light source, much more akin to daylight and means that drivers operating vehicles fitted with LED headlights are able to see more clearly, taking away some of the strain of driving at night and the associated dangers. In addition, they reduce energy consumption and last longer, making

P

LED lights a much safer and efficient option. As the market leading supplier of lighting components for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, HELLA is well placed to provide workshops and fleet operators with the high quality components they need.

60

The company’s unrivalled experience and knowledge mean that, when it comes to vehicle lighting, HELLA is also the go to company for support and advice. Practical Action Bearing in mind the hundreds of thousands of miles commercial vehicles cover and the ever increasing concern over the safety of other road users - including the growing number of cyclists - regular assessment of their lights should be undertaken, so they can be repaired or replaced immediately before undermining the vehicle’s safety. Therefore, before setting off, drivers should walk around their vehicle to survey its general condition and assess its lights, paying particular attention to broken lenses, lamps that are not secure and for any bulbs that may have failed. A full and dipped beam test must also be undertaken, as well as the rear brake lights, which will naturally need the assistance of a colleague. To be sure of the correct light distribution, operators should always fit quality replacement headlight lenses that bear the correct E marking. This ensures that the lenses have been tested and approved by a photometric laboratory and have met the standards of the European Commission. Even when quality lighting is fitted, it must be checked to make sure it is correctly adjusted, so that it delivers the right light distribution. When it comes to the safety of those sharing the road with long vehicles, trailer side markers also need to be considered. The Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) has addressed this concern and in order to comply with the regulations, front, side and rear lights must be positioned correctly.

In addition to the position, their illumination, which relies on reliable connection between tractor and trailer, is important and must remain linked to the driving lights of the tractor unit. Therefore, if the headlights of the cab are switched on, so are the trailer markers and rear lights. However, trailers hauled by trucks with DRLs have these lights synchronised with the DRL systems, so are illuminated when the vehicle’s ignition is on. HELLA has designed and introduced a unique solution to this challenge that is able to fulfil a duel function and can be used for both original equipment and retrofit applications. The HELLA side direction indicator is a fully type approved, 24v unit that incorporates the company’s latest micro optics technology, is compliant with the latest ECE-R48 Series 5/6 regulations and developed for truck and trailer applications. One of its key benefits is the ability to provide either static or flashing illumination through the same wiring circuit, making installation straight forward and quick, which is an important consideration for retrofit applications. T

How is it possible to achieve both a longer lasting bulb that also gives up to 100% more light on the road? Developments made with the OSRAM computer controlled coiling machines, have made it possible to produce bulb filaments with a single coil instead of the traditional double coil design. These are not only more robust but also give a brighter, more even beam pattern. OSRAM has carried out extensive trials, measuring the vibration and mechanical shock levels that bulbs experience in actual use driving over a wide range of road surfaces including cobbles, pot-holes

BRAKING ON WHICH TO RELY MATCHING OE SPECIFICATION ENSURES THE ULTIMATE STOPPING POWER

ith many commercial vehicles (CV) weighing in excess of 40 tonnes, the primary safety concern for their drivers and owners, as well as other road users, is their ability to stop as quickly, controllably and in as short a distance as possible. Clearly, this is only possible by using quality braking components that are manufactured to the correct specifications by reputable suppliers. In order to ensure its Borg & Beck CV brake pads deliver this level of performance, First Line Ltd uses its own in-house product team to stipulate that the friction material used for its Borg & Beck brake pads meets or exceeds original equipment (OE) specifications. The semi-metallic or low-metallic organic formulations (dependent on application) it has developed, provide high performance braking capability whilst minimising wear. Where enhanced performance is required, its 8 HD pads benefit from a heavy-duty formulation for additional peace of mind. In the same way, Borg & Beck brake pads always use the same number of retention pots as the OE parts, which is in stark contrast to some aftermarket products, which simply use an arbitrary number (usually four). Combined, where necessary, with the meshed backplate,

W

64

this ensures that delamination does not occur, which could lead to reduced brake performance or even total failure. In addition, all Borg & Beck brake pads feature slurry stripes to aid the bedding in process. This is a thin layer of mild abrasive, which cleans the friction surfaces and ensures maximum contact area between pad and disc. This coupled with the glossy blue paint finish ensures the Borg & Beck CV brake pads also stand out from the crowd. A powerful demonstration of just how effective Borg & Beck brake pads and discs are can be seen in the British Truck Racing Championship where one of the most potent vehicles on the division two grid, an 11-litre, ex-Mercedes works team-built truck, which delivers Porsche 911 beating performance figures, races with off-the-shelf Borg & Beck brake pads and discs. The brake disc range now consists of more than 100 ECE R90 homologated discs. This classification is only obtained by the products undergoing independent testing of both hot and cold braking performance characteristics compared to the OE product. Again, Borg & Beck brake discs are manufactured to OE specification using GG20 grey cast iron, which operates in temperatures up to 700OC and part of the R90 process also includes a full factory audit and approval.

As would be expected, Borg & Beck also offer a comprehensive range of brake drums, which are naturally manufactured to OE specification and dimensions, but crucially, also in weight. Cheaper options in the market often have corners cut in their manufacturing process, which means they are lighter and not as strong. It is therefore important that CV drums are a comparable weight to that of the OE version. The Borg & Beck CV braking programme now reaches to more than 320 references across four product types and consists of 134 brake discs and 128 drums, as well as 35 brake pads and 25 wear sensors. Naturally, it is also backed up with the company’s 24-month unlimited mileage warranty. For more information: 01869 248484 or www.borgandbeck.com/cv
