STEAM TUNNELS

The University of Guelph received $26 million to improve its heat-recovery system. Using a network of tunnels underneath the university grounds, heated water will be delivered to buildings all over campus to provide heat and electricity. This new green initiative will lead to a 3,200 tonne reduction in greenhouse gases.

MYSTERIOUS PACKAGE

Delivery of a mysterious package led to the evacuation of all employees and guests from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs/Service Ontario building on Stone Road on March 12. While the public has been cleared to re-enter the building, an investigation into the contents of the package is ongoing.

Student government is important in two ways. On the one hand, it provides an outlet for student advocacy that lends legitimacy to the student voice and allows collaboration between university administration and the student body towards a joint future, while maintaining the importance of student input.

Secondly, the student government here at Guelph provides services for students that they can’t get elsewhere.

Anything from free legal advice to coffee in the Bullring to cheap printing, the CSA has a menagerie of cool services.

Late-night snack: Pizza, preferably from Olive Tree or Papa John’s (best places in Guelph).

Netflix most-recents: Jessica Jones, Season 2, or New Girl, I go back and forth.

First act as CSA executive: Establish a good working relationship with the other executive [members]. If we want to accomplish any of our goals for next year then we will need to work together as a team.

Student government is important for two reasons. The first being its advocacy work; all student governments in some form or another speak with administration and do so on behalf of students.

They’re essentially a mouthpiece that helps to amplify and concentrate the student voice. The second reason is student government provides things for students that the university or administration does not. Things like events or services; essentially general tools that help alleviate some of the stress of being a student and make their time at university a bit easier.

Late-night snack: Multi Grain Cheerios with cold 2% milk.

Netflix most-recents: Halt and Catch Fire, a show about the computer revolution during the 1980s. Dramatic, entertaining, and a good soundtrack.

First act as CSA executive: Attend the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario Skills Development Symposium with the other execs. It’s fun, we learn about other student unions’ work, and it’s free!

Student government is important because: The CSA, as the undergrad student union, is more than just services and helping students save money. It’s students working fulltime for other students. With the CSA’s resources, I’ve been able to work on campaigns with other students such as TapIn! or Fight the Fees, and do this kind of activist work that I was doing in the past, but on a larger scale. Other undergrads should also care about the CSA because we are all equal members and we can shape the student union together to be better for students, all while building the student movement.

HOMECOMING and St. Patrick’s Day are two of the biggest party days for students in Guelph, Mayor Cam Guthrie tells me (in his videos). And I have to agree.

My neighbours are up at 9 a.m. pounding beers, booming EDM, and howling indistinguishable terms of endearment.

Chancellors Way is bracing itself for another trash-nado, and Cam Guthrie and the Chief of Police

want you to know that they won’t stand by and let it go down like it’s Sept. 23, 2017. Personally, I’m fine with the festivities. I’ll partake after trying to sleep in through the noise. But before you go rage, here are a few reminders to stay respectful and safe: 1. Drink water throughout the day if you will be drinking. Your Sunday hangover will thank you.

2. Eat something. If you don’t have enough protein in your stomach, you’ll probably get sick. And future you will think that green food colouring you just threw up is suspect. I mean, you didn’t even have any green food colouring. Wait, did you?

3. Tell your friends from out of town to chill and not pull that sign out of the ground. I watched the police chief video so you don’t have to, and there will be more police than in previous

You will get guidance on how to interact with police and by-law officers if they do show up at your party.

[This tip is important for “that guy” in your friend group.] Once you complete your registration, you will be confirmed for a unique one-time waste bag collection program being provided on Sunday, March 18, 2018.”

Liberal MPP Arthur Potts proposes legislation to lower voting age Why the voting age should be lowered to 16 HANNAH RUUTH

IN ONTARIO, at the age of 16 you can join the military, get your driver’s licence, and pay income taxes, but you cannot vote.

In addition, in Canada, we allow citizens at merely 14 years of age to join political parties and vote for their leader — a decision that

ultimately shapes the direction of our governance. The parties embrace the voices of their youngest members, but when provincial election day approaches, these active party members are left voiceless.

Earlier this month, Liberal MPP Arthur Potts introduced a private member’s bill, which seeks to lower Ontario’s legal voting age from 18 to 16 — following in the footsteps of countries like Austria, Ireland, and Brazil who have all lowered their voting ages.

Mandated by the Ministry of Education, every grade 10 student in Ontario must take civics and careers, a course in which students

learn about governance and discuss the implications of current affairs. The course allows students to grasp the concepts surrounding the political climate, so why not empower these same students by giving them the right to vote?

More than half of Canadian schools currently participate in the Student Vote initiative by CIVIX, which is a simulated election that mirrors the political process. The voter turnout is high and often reflective of the riding’s and country’s political views.

However, youth voter turnout in actual elections is inherently low.

In the 2014 provincial election,

only 51 per cent of youth voted.

One study by Eva Zeglovits and Julian Aichholzer suggests that by lowering the minimum voting age we will increase voter turnout, because students will develop a habit of voting, while being integrated into an environment that encourages debate and analysis of current affairs.

Our youth are eager, ambitious, and ready to accelerate change — as demonstrated by Guelph’s own Noah Irvine. Irvine, age 17, wrote to 338 members of Parliament, expressing his thoughts on a National Mental Health Strategy.

Despite his activism and dedication

for change, he cannot vote.

Canada’s youth are not apathetic.

Current election studies may reflect historically low voter turnout, but they are not a complete picture of youth civic engagement.

In fact, over 16,000 young people applied to be on the Prime Minister’s Youth Council.

The bills that the Ontario Legislative Assembly pass influence factors including education, environment, and economy. If young Canadians are directly impacted by the decisions of our governing bodies, their voices should be reflected in our elections.

weeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street comes to Guelph this week as Curtain Call Productions’ (CCP) annual winter show. With a cast and crew of over 40 students, this production of Sweeney Todd is directed by Helen Victoria Toner, a fourth year animal biology and theatre student who wished to take the musical back to its gritty origins.

“I wanted to give it the edgier look that I feel it often loses. Often, it’s done by older adults and it loses some of its appeal to younger audiences. So I wanted to add in the fast pace, revamp it, youth-inize it,” said Toner.

The 2007 film directed by Tim Burton had a $50 million budget, but CCP does not have that same luxury. Luckily, Toner was given the creative freedom to focus on the plotline, following a barber who’s driven mad when the cruel Judge Turpin exiles him, drives his wife to suicide, and takes custody of his infant daughter. The film focuses on Sweeney Todd’s deranged quest to kill Judge Turpin, but the musical expands the focus to Anthony, a young sailor who falls in love with Todd’s daughter, Johanna, and Turpin himself. The plot follows the same timeline, but adds some much-needed context to scenes to create a well-rounded play.

Sweeney Todd highlights the skills of each crew. The sets crew created an intricate barber’s chair that can be tilted forward, throwing Todd’s victims down a trap door into the basement. The lighting and sound complement each other nicely to create a bloody red screen and scream that made each kill seem like Todd was falling further into madness. Costumes and makeup establish the grim nineteenth-century setting while the props crew opts for realism, with the characters eating real meat pies on stage.

“Overall, I like to build stuff as a team. I like to brainstorm ideas with my designers and with my cast, and inspire them to come up with their own ideas. Then my role is to funnel their ideas so that it all makes one cohesive image. In that way, I end up changing my vision along the way based on what their ideas are,” said Toner.

Bryndyn Boonstra’s portrayal of Sweeney Todd captures a fixated, moody character with one goal and an unstoppable driving anger to get there. Boonstra was not afraid to raise his grizzly voice to show Todd’s frustrations. Judge Turpin, who battles Anthony for Johanna’s love, is played by Elijah Glasgow, who convincingly depicts the judge’s mental deterioration, especially in the scene where he falls in love with Johanna. This scene is removed from the film, but gives a muchneeded explanation for why Turpin decides to marry her.

Alex Nunez plays the Beggar Woman, an old and simple woman who offers sex to those who get too close. Nunez perfects the immediate shift from frail, pitiful old woman to aggressive peddler. With quick shuffling steps and a flailing dress, she provided humorous breaks amidst rather serious scenes.

Other notable moments include Emma Vanderkuyl, in the role of Johanna, singing “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” and hitting each soaring note. Vanderkuyl does not shy away from the highest notes of the song and is still able to enunciate and make the meaning clear. Additionally, Michael Sharivker, playing the ridiculous rival barber, Pirelli, adds a sense of humour to the show that is excessive but appropriate for the character — and he does a spectacular Irish accent.

Diana DelRosario dominates each scene she’s in in a sensational performance as Todd’s accomplice, the pie maker Mrs. Lovett, with a face full of attitude and an accent that never wavers. DelRosario’s opening song, “Worst Pies in London,” shows off her vocals.

Bianca Low Kum, co-executive producer of the show and fifth year psychology and philosophy student, told The Ontarion about her focus leading up to opening night: “I just make sure, overall, that everything’s going to be okay.” The show is more than okay — it’s bloody wonderful.

StoneHammer Brewing hosts comedy show for Women’s Day Comedy and beer make for a funny pairing O D E S I A H OW L E T T

in honour of International Women’s Day, StoneHammer Brewing hosted Laughs & Draughts, a comedy show with an all-female lineup at their brewery in Guelph.

Roughly 50 people attended, and all door proceeds from the event were donated to Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.

Per for mer s included loca l favourites Amber Dewar, Sarah Simpson, Emily Vance, Daina Wallace, Erinn White, and Mirali Almaula, and special guest Suzie Taka. Hosted by Making-Box regular Cas Knihnisky, the show celebrated women and supported a cause that benefits women in our society.

The night featured a brewery

tour before and between two sets of comedy. It seemed as though the comedians didn’t know that there would be two sets, and the second allowed the audience to see their humour unpolished, which got equally as many laughs.

StoneHammer Brewing coowner Lesley Woodhouse said, “We like to be different, we like to be innovative. We don’t have a huge space for a huge event, so we thought we would just put on something small and celebrate International Women’s Day.” Woodhouse pointed out that while western brewing has been male-dominated in recent history, brewing was traditionally a female activity. “If you go way back to the beginning, it was the women that were brewing the beer. Men were out of the equation. So it’s sort of an homage to those women as well.”

Woodhouse was open to the idea of hosting more events at the brewery. “If comedy shows turn into our jam, then we’re happy to do that as long as we can get people that [want to] come out

Gibb, the organizer of Laughs & Draughts, pitched the event and was given the green light to find comedians and confirm the lineup.

He shared that he knew a few comedians and asked them if they were available, and then let them ask their friends and others in the community if they wanted to be part of the event. Through word of mouth, he secured eight hilarious comedians.

The event raised over $200 for Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.

ON MARCH 3, R ena nn Isa ac s Contemporary Art held its opening reception for Felice Koenig’s More Please exhibition, including work from the past few years that Koenig describes as a “meditation on obsessive gesture.” Koenig’s art uses layers of acrylic paint, sometimes over a hundred in a single piece, combined into cohesive pieces that display subtle sentiments and serenity.

At first glance, More Please appears to be a collection of unassuming artworks, similar yet unique, each capturing a simple dynamic of colours and shapes.

However, Koenig’s art does not depend upon first glances, as closer inspection reveals each piece to be a complex multitude of colours, contributing to its layered textures

and serene disposition. Koenig’s art appears to mirror the complexity of life. Just as simplicity is often contrived of intricate origin, each layer of paint contributes to the final completed piece — small decisions that inevitably result in a unified whole, transforming chaotic elements into feelings of peace and tranquility.

Pieces such a s “Double Embrace” and “Love is being there” subtly introduce a particular vibrancy that cannot be noticed from a distance, contributing to the underlying notion that these pieces are not necessarily meant

to evoke immediate stimulation.

The pieces capture both elements of disorder and unity, only revealing themselves upon further examination.

Overall, Koenig’s exhibition ref lects a calm yet satisfying approach to contemporary art, not necessarily evoking new thought or ideas, but rather exploring expression through subtle means.

The title More Please almost seems ironic, as Koenig’s art encompasses so much by saying so little.

Debut EP encompasses Saya’s talents, but sometimes lacks flavour Toronto singer’s Chills & Thrills has ups and downs J O N AT H A N S T M I C H A E L

Saya’s debut EP Chills & Thrills is a glimpse at the city’s contribution to the contemporary pop scene, mixing elements of early 2000s R&B with smooth, lofty vibes. Released near the end of January, the EP has been accompanied by three music videos: “Paid,” “Cold Fire,” and “On Ice,” all displaying a glam aesthetic, effectively idolizing the lifestyles of the rich and beautiful. Her image exudes confidence and sexuality, encompassed within her lyrical content as well as her visual style; Chills & Thrills captures the image of a world glamorized by sex and money.

The EP begins with “Welcome to Paradise,” a subdued pop track, with vocal melodies reminiscent of Lorde and song structure reminiscent of Kali Uchis. However, while the track seems to draw on the dynamics of both artists, it lacks the innovation and identity that would separate it from other current pop acts. This is echoed throughout the majority of the EP, notably in songs “On Ice” and “No Pressure.” Despite their initially intriguing sound, they quickly lose momentum as Saya’s TORONTO MUSICIAN

stagnant vocals and lyricism fail to propel the songs. The glossy pop hooks aren’t enough to make up for the lacklustre verses, and get lost within the songs’ repetitive structures.

However, the EP redeems itself in the second half, as the interlude “Vertigo” changes the tempo and pushes Saya’s vocal style towards an increasingly melodious, upbeat, and distinct sound otherwise lacking in the first half. The next two songs, “Paid ft. KRIS” and “Cold Fire,” are the highlights of the album. The songs offer examples of Saya’s versatility and her ability to perform well within the framework of contemporary pop and R&B. “Cold Fire,” with its catchy hook and praiseworthy instrumental work, is Saya at her best, displaying her vocal strength.

In its entirety, Chills & Thrills is a solid debut EP, encompassing Saya’s talents within the dynamics of pop and R&B. Her lyricism, though lacking and quite bland on a majority of the tracks, stands out on “Cold Fire,” and appears as a solid expression of sexual confidence and Saya’s evolving vocal style. Overall, the EP lacks in its lyrical content and general uniqueness, but represents Saya’s emergence as a growing pop artist in her own right.

Guelph artists in the MFA program took their new show, Going On Without Us, out of the gallery and into the greenhouse — specifically the U of G’s EC Bovey Teaching Greenhouse.

“We were interested in getting outside of being just in a gallery space, which is usually a white cube, and all our work is dealing with plants and fruit and we thought, ‘What

would it look like if the objects came into a space like this?’” said Emily Moriarty, who collaborated on the show with Sarah Davidson and Daniel Griffin Hunt.

The change of venue was certainly effective in adding a new dimension to the pieces, making them less ostentatious and more like a statement of fact. It was also much more fun than a traditional

exhibit, requiring more effort on the part of the viewer to navigate the pieces rather than simply presenting them. Sarah Davidson added, “It’s also so much a part of the University of Guelph. There’s a lot of agricultural research and plant science happening here. It seems like it would make sense in conversation with where we are geographically.”

DURING THE NBA All-Star weekend on Feb. 17, Toronto Raptors All-Star DeMar DeRozan surprised many fans and friends when seemingly out of nowhere he posted the following tweet at 3 a.m.: “This depression get the best of me…”

Social media gives fans greater insight into the lives of professional athletes. But even so, it’s rare to see male athletes talk about something as stigmatized as their own mental health. Returning to Los Angeles brought back memories for DeRozan, a Compton, Calif. native, who told The Toronto Star that he sunk into a depression the night of the tweet, like he has many times since he was young.

“It’s one of those things that no matter how indestructible we look, we’re all human at the end of the day. We’ve all got feelings.

Sometimes it gets the best of you — times where everything in the whole world is on top of you,” DeRozan told The Star.

Within hours of his tweet,

thousands of fans and friends were reaching out, sending supportive messages over Twitter, and supporting him through this tough time.

DeRozan’s public message has also inspired other players to open up about their own experiences with mental health, which they may have closeted or never opened up about otherwise. This was true for Cleveland Cavaliers player, Kevin Love, who credited DeRozan in his Players Tribune article, “Everyone is going through something.”

L ove, another star athlete, addressed the panic attack that he had during a game, which along with being physically debilitating, changed his perspective on mental health. He addressed the social

stigma around talking about mental health and discussed why it tends to be so hard for men and boys to talk about it in public.

“Growing up, you figure out quickly how a boy is supposed to act. Be strong. Don’t talk about your feelings. Get through it on your own,” Love writes.

Mental health issues affect everyone, and having professional athletes openly admit that they are dealing with the same things can be uplifting. It is inspiring to hear individuals who people admire speak up about such a prevalent, though often silent, issue. It makes it easier as a result for others to address their own mental health.

Another player, Kelly Oubre Jr. of the Washington Wizards, has

spoken up recently about his own mental health, according to Forbes magazine. Discussing their issues, both professionally and publicly, seems to have helped these athletes. DeRozan said that it felt great to speak out, according to The Star. Love wrote in his article that going to therapy was a huge step in the right direction for him, even though he never thought he would go. Stigma around mental illness will continue to dissipate as athletes provide more glimpses into their daily struggles. Being able to relate makes it much easier for others to open up about this topic. If successful people are sharing their own stories and struggles, then it will become easier for others to share theirs.

Orgasm is more difficult for cis women to experience because of their physiology, which means many cis women can’t orgasm from intercourse alone. Stimulation of the clitoris is important for many cis women to experience an orgasm and penile-vaginal intercourse alone often does not stimulate the clitoris.

So ladies, if you aren’t orgasming solely through penile-vaginal intercourse, it doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with you.

That being said, everyone experiences orgasm differently (there are even differences that exist from one experience to the next),

so it can be useful to do some experimentation to see what works best for you.

While cis women may orgasm less than cis men, this difference may be lessened when in a relationship. Elizabeth Armstrong and colleagues found that 11 per cent of cis women orgasm during the first time they hook up with someone, whereas 67 per cent of cis women orgasm during sexual activity with a significant other that they have been with for six or more months.

This doesn’t mean that cis women are unhappy with their orgasms. The study showed that 62 per cent of cis women who are in a relationship are very satisfied with

the amount of orgasms they have.

It was noted that the more frequent occurrence of orgasms in committed relationships may be because there tends to be more foreplay. This falls in line with a U.S. national survey that found that cis men orgasm more through direct intercourse, whereas cis women orgasm more through various other sexual acts, such as oral sex.

A no t her m a i n d i f f er e nc e between these sexes is the ability for cis women to have multiple orgasms. William Masters and Virginia Johnson found that cis men need to recharge (called a refractory period) after having

an orgasm, but cis women do not, allowing them to have multiple orgasms. The time it takes for cis man to recharge depends on a variety of factors, but is often impacted by age, with older cis men needing more time in between than younger cis men.

T he la st major d if ference between cis men and women that has been found is the average time it takes to reach orgasm. Masters and Johnson found that cis men orgasm much quicker, averaging around four minutes, whereas cis women take about 10-20 minutes on average.

Is the future of sports broadcasting online?

Streaming poses existential threat to cable sports networks MEGHAN COISH

to watch sports — streaming — has taken off with more people opting out of paying high cable bills in exchange for cheaper online options. The number of so called “cord-cutters” has been steadily increasing each year with 222,000 Canadian households cancelling their cable TV services in 2016.

Major Canadian sports broadcasting networks like TSN and Sportsnet have been losing subscribers and receiving lower ratings from an increase in streaming among sports fans. According to the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission), TSN lost approximately 200,000 subscribers from 2011-2015 and Sportsnet saw an even bigger loss of nearly a million subscribers.

Networks who offer streaming online, such as Sportsnet NOW, still require a cable subscription, defeating the purpose of why many people have opted for streaming over cable. While illegal streams have plenty of drawbacks, such as THE LATEST WAY

buffering, poor quality, and potential adware, they have improved over the years. As the sites who offer the streams gain popularity, they are also generating greater ad revenue, making it more attractive as a business.

And Canada is not the only country experiencing this phenomenon. The U.S.-based sports channel ESPN has also been hemorrhaging subscribers, losing almost 13 million in the past six years. This loss cost the company next to $1 billion in revenue and led its own executives to turn to streaming services.

The biggest challenge for broadcasting networks is their reliance on cable subscriptions. With programming costs skyrocketing, sports networks are scrambling to increase revenue and cuts costs.

It remains to be seen if revenue from subscriptions will offset their expenses, but due to the rising popularity of streaming it was a risk that needed to be taken.

In England, rising costs of the Premier League have been a hot topic, with the multi-billion dollar deals broadcasters have signed for the rights to the league resulting

in a major increase to consumers’ cable bills. Fans who wish to watch every game are also forced to get multiple channels, costing consumers more money. This changing landscape has resulted in many cutting the cords entirely and turning to streaming sites, where they have access to every game for no additional cost.

The Internet is a direct threat to cable sports stations, and not just in the way consumers view live sports. We now have the flexibility to pick and choose which highlights we want to see online wherever and whenever we want, rather than waiting for the highlights for a specific game to appear on television. With consumers always looking for ways to save time, this is another reason why sports broadcasters are wary of the growing threat of the Internet on their business.

The question facing sports broadcasting networks remains the same: Will they adapt to the changing landscape, or is the future of s p o r t s b ro a d c a s t i n g s o l e ly online?

down the street, I spotted two guys exhaling clouds of what appeared to be smoke. I expected to smell the disgusting scent of cigarettes as I passed by. Instead, I was greeted by the sweet smell of vanilla.

Had these guys discovered the first pack of cigarettes that didn’t reek of death? No, they hadn’t. In fact, they weren’t smoking cigarettes at all.

They were vaping.

AS I SAUNTERED

Vaping is a modernized nicotine delivery system.

Vapor is inhaled using a vaporizer that holds an oily substance containing nicotine. This substance is referred to as e-liquid. The internal heating element, called a coil, heats the liquid to create vapour that users inhale and exhale; the vapour then dissipates into the air with no lingering smell.

You may be asking yourself, “Both smoking and vaping deliver nicotine — what’s the difference?”

Well, curious reader, smoking burns materials within the cigarette, freeing the carcinogens — substances that promote the formation of cancer — packed inside. During vaping, however, the liquid is heated instead of burned. The resulting puff is then water vapour, not smoke (hence the name).

E-liquids contain fewer chemicals than cigarettes, making vaping 95 per cent less harmful than smoking, according to a report by Public Health England. Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals, including formaldehyde and tobacco. When tobacco is burned, tar is produced as a result, in addition to many other carcinogenic chemicals.

E-liquids only have five ingredients: 1. Propylene glycol 2. Glycerin 3. Nicotine 4. Water 5. Flavouring

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States deemed these ingredients as “generally safe,” with many of them appearing in foods, medications, makeup products, and hair products across the market, according to Carrie Arnold in Environmental Health Perspectives. But that’s only if these products are either injected or used topically. There is little to no information on how these substances affect the body when vaped.

Many people compare vaping to smoking shisha.

Shisha, however, is actually more similar to smoking than it is to vaping.

In shisha, hot coals burn tobacco, which creates carbon monoxide. The smoke then passes through water before inhalation. According to a report by the World Health Organization, one hour of smoking shisha can be equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes in terms of the amount of tar and carcinogenic chemicals entering the lungs.

In addition to causing roughly 100 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning worldwide, according to Diane Callelo, New Jersey Poison Control Center executive and medical director at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s Department of Emergency Medicine, burning tobacco in a shisha bowl also produces tar, which is not filtered by the water. E-liquid, on the other hand, doesn’t contain any tobacco. Instead, it contains concentrated nicotine.

According to a study by Jan Czogala at the Medical University of Silesia, outside of nicotine exposure to by-standers, vaping doesn’t produce second-hand smoke. However, since vaping has only been around for about 11 years, the long-term health effects are still unknown.

S o m e i n fo r m a t i o n d o e s e x i s t regarding the by-products of these vaporized solvents.

The cloud produced by the heated coil collects ultrafine particulates from the heating element, including nickel, aluminum, and material from the e-liquid components. These particles can stick to the interior of the lungs, potentially leading to respiratory and cardiovascular issues later on.

In addition to these ultrafine particles, formaldehyde is produced as the liquid heats up, but at a lower dosage than in cigarette smoke. Cigarettes release between 1.6 to 52 micrograms of formaldehyde, whereas 15 puffs of a vape create 0.2 to 5.2 micrograms of formaldehyde.

Despite limited knowledge available on vaping, the number of users continues to rise, especially among teenagers. Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry have popularized vaporizers. More than 12 per cent of Canadian high school students have tried vaping as of 2017, according to researchers Sunday Azgaba, Neil Bruce Baskerville, and Kristie Foley.

In stores, strict age controls regulate purchases of vaporizer and e-liquids; patrons must be at least 19 years of age. These controls almost disappear, however, with online retailers, where the age restrictions for vaping products can simply be bypassed by answering

an age-related questionnaire that pops up upon first entry of the site.

Vaping may offer potential benefits for people who are trying to quit smoking.

For one, e-liquid comes in a range of nicotine levels. Being able to reduce the amount of nicotine in the liquid may be an effective way to slowly wean off the addiction to nicotine.

While results are mixed on the merit of vaping as a legitimate quitting aid, many studies report that approximately half of smokers who had switched to vaporizers had quit smoking after 12 months, and many had decreased the nicotine levels in their e-liquids. However, the amount by which nicotine concentrations were decreased is not outlined in the study.

Saving money may be another incentive to switch from smoking to vaping.

A moderate smoker can easily smoke up to 12 cigarettes a day. At $12 a pack, smokers spend about $2,184 on cigarettes annually. That’s not including the price of lighters, breaking cigarettes, and losing packs to water damage and forgetfulness.

Base model vaporizers cost approximately $50 while a standard 30 millilitre bottle of e-liquid costs $15 on the low end. A bottle of this size can typically last about a week and a half for someone who is vaping. This means that vaping costs about $570 annually.

Since vaping hasn’t been around long enough to uncover all of its benefits and drawbacks, current vapers are medical guinea pigs for research on the various health effects. Until more is known, vape at your own risk.

Demystifying the meaning of mindfulness Really, you don’t need an ashram — it’s easier than you think!

might seem like a far-off, mystical, ungraspable concept. Something that you, as an extremely busy person, would certainly have no time to dedicate to. Luckily, this isn’t true. Mindfulness is within everyone’s reach, even if you don’t have time to master the secrets of the universe.

Put simply, mindfulness is being aware of your thoughts and actions in the moment. This doesn’t always have to be an otherworldly, mindaltering experience: it can just be enough to ground you, to calm you down after a busy day, or to take a moment for yourself.

Start small, maybe just by noticing your breath and taking a few breaths very consciously.

MINDFULNESS

Most of the time, we don’t even think about this essential thing that we do all the time. And so focussing on your breath is an easy thing to pay attention to, and you don’t need to spend a lot of time doing it.

Allow yourself to zone in on your breath: the expansion and decompression of the lungs, the sound of the air resonating in your body, the smell.

This initial exercise is the gateway to being mindful with the rest of the body. Notice how your feet feel, then move up to the legs, hips, chest, shoulders, and down the arms to the hands. Finally, notice how your head weighs down on your neck, and the angle at which it is bent.

Both of these things can be done almost anywhere, though it can be challenging to do while rushing somewhere.

This common occurrence, for some, can be one of the most difficult and rewarding situations to practice mindfulness.

When you’re not rushing somewhere, you can also use your travel time for mindfulness.

Instead of looking at your phone, take time to survey your surroundings.

Notice if the sun is out, how strong the wind is, what the temperature is like outside.

Allow yourself a moment to relax and let your concerns slip into the back of your mind while you enjoy the beauty of the day.

Put simply, mindfulness is being aware of your thoughts and actions in the moment.

Black history doesn’t end in February Black History Month may be over, but black history is every day O D E S I A H OW L E T T

FOUR YEARS AGO, I

wrote a piece on Black History Month being snubbed for The English Students’ Society’s blog called Sassy Saturdays.

I’ve now had four Black History Months to think about things and you’ll be happy to know that things have gotten better. With the help of the Guelph Black Heritage Society and the Guelph Black Student Association, Black History Month now lasts for at least two weeks for white people!

This isn’t meant to criticize the black associations that have put a lot of time and effort into creating events, but to criticize anyone who walks past the banner on Raithby House without even glancing up. Black History Month is an important time for black people

because it’s a designated time for us to scream from the hills that we’re awesome while also reminding society of black contributions violently obtained. As George Santayana once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and therefore it is incredibly important for our society to learn from Black History Month.

At the end of February, it’s important to remember that the contributions of black people continue to deserve recognition.

Also, it’s important to keep in mind that black people, like everyone else, are multidimensional.

There’s an intersectionality to each person and Black History Month does not represent everyone the

same way; black men may experience black history differently from black women; queer black women may experience black history differently from trans black men. It’s important not to put all black people in a box, but rather to see them for their differences.

Rosemary Brown was the first black female member of a provincial legislature and a significant step forward for women, whereas

Ruper Raj was a trans man who attempted to form a support group in 1971 and helped start a conversation about trans people in the community. Their contributions to Canada are different, but both deserve our recognition and respect.

After years of experiencing Black History Month on campus, I believe that it also represents all who identify as people of colour.

In this world, ruled by white cisgendered men, having the month of February to celebrate the contributions and strengths of people of colour is necessary. It’s easy to think, “If there’s a Black History Month, why isn’t there a ‘Brown History Month,’ or an ‘Asian History Month?’” I think that all people of colour can benefit from Black History Month if they see it as a time to celebrate everyone who has been taken advantage of by colonialism. To lift up one minority is to support them all.

Our lives are intersectional, beautiful, and deser ve to be respected for much longer than the 28 days of February.

If you want to keep black history in your mind year ’round, there are dozens of books written by people of colour that you can find at your local library; workshops and festivals to attend; and people who you can have genuine conversations with about black history and experiences in Canada.

Are you contributing to the mental health crisis plaguing vets?

Online vitriol in the case of Roxy the Goldendoodle is nothing new C A R L E I G H C AT H C A R T

CTV News published an atrociously biased story on a dog who was “reunited” with her family after being surrendered to a clinic whose alleged $8,000 emergency quote the family could not afford.

The article, which lacked any semblance of journalistic integrity, was shared online and provided a forum for dozens of misinformed consumers to spew vitriolic comments about the apparent universal greed of veterinarians.

I don’t know the specifics of this situation. In fact, the clinic in question was legally prevented from commenting (read: defending itself) due to confidentiality regulations. Thus, I cannot provide any input on the legitimacy of the owners’ claims or the circumstances surrounding Roxy the Goldendoodle’s incident. What

I can do, though, is explain the harm caused by the media’s portrayal of this event, as well as the baseless insults against vets doled out following the story’s release.

right. Bringing home an animal is a commitment that involves time, money, and — yes — unforeseen events. The frequent demand for payment plans is not feasible, given that most clinics lose thousands of dollars a year to unpaid accounts.

Whether it’s pet insurance, a savings account, or a temporary loan, it is the responsibility of owners to ensure that they are prepared to give their animals the care they deserve.

Unbeknownst to many, a huge mental health crisis is currently plaguing the veterinary profession.

Let’s start by getting one thing straight: veterinarians are not, contrary to popular belief, in it for the money.

The schooling period for a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree is just as long (if not longer) than that of a medical doctor (MD), except the professional salary is, if lucky, almost half as much. The long hours worked by a vet could be spent in far more lucrative positions if money were truly a driving factor for pursuit of the career.

S e c o n d l y, w h e n y o u p a y a veterinary bill, the money does not (*gasp*) go straight to the vet’s bank account.

Like any small business, clinics must cover overhead costs that include, but are not limited to: • Staff salaries • Utilities • Rent/lease • Insurance • Taxes • Equipment

Thirdly, vets cannot be expected to work for free. Accusing a veterinarian of heartlessness because they request payment for their services or blaming them for a pet’s theoretical demise if they refuse

free treatment is a form of toxic abuse that is not projected on other professionals. It would be absurd to hold a chef responsible for your starvation if they refused to provide free meals at a restaurant, so why should vets be held to a similar expectation?

Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity to work at a summer camp, thanks to funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program. Providing these jobs is an important part of the Canada Youth Employment Strategy. The March 8 edition of The Ontarion highlighted how there are more than 70,000 jobs available, yet made no mention of the fact that many organizations, such as the camp I worked at, can no longer receive funding. I am appalled that, as students, our employment opportunities and economic stability are being threatened by the government. Students should not be used as pawns to advance a political agenda. Our jobs should not be succumbed to a government imposition of values. Justin Trudeau, as minister of youth, must place students first by continuing to fund these life-changing jobs, regardless of the employer’s values.

After all, diversity means respecting all beliefs, not just those of the government.

IT WAS A BLIND DOUBLE DATE SET UP BY MUTUAL FRIENDS.

My friend, let’s call her Briella, had texted me a picture of a guy with a stuffed toy on his head. She asked whether I thought this guy, let’s call him Leo, was cute. She explained that she was trying to help him find someone to — for lack of better words — pop his cherry. To be his first date, his first kiss, his first time having sex. Someone he had things in common with and was sex positive enough to not judge him for being a virgin.

I was flattered, so I said yes. I was also going through a dry spell, so that was a bonus reason. Briella set the date up as more of a group gathering at a board game cafe to ease any tension. Deep down, I was feeling very nervous. I had some experience with one-night stands, but not much in going on dates.

The last date I’d been on was with my ex, whom I’d just gotten over.

Regardless, I brushed away this fear. “It’s been almost a year,” I told myself. “You’ve got this. Time to start fresh. You’re ready.”

Those initial nerves, however, came rushing back on the day of the date. On top of this, on the bus ride to the cafe, I found out that one of Briella’s other friends, who would be joining us, was friends with a guy that I had previously hooked up with. Yay.

When we arrived at the cafe, I tried to act casual and look him in the eye without blushing. It took playing a group game of Funemployed to laugh it off. Eventually, each group member had to leave until we were left alone. Small talk ensued. He was really nice, but painfully quiet. We had a lot in common in terms of politics and travelling, but we lacked chemistry. To the point that I didn’t think he was into me at all. This is why I was so surprised when Briella texted me about how Leo told her that he thought I was attractive, but didn’t think I was into him.

She explained that Leo is shy and inexperienced, so he didn’t know how to express his interest. She added that this was my chance to be the one to teach him. Make the move. Call the shots. Be the boss.

To give the middle finger to the stereotype of Asian women being submissive and helpless. That idea was enough to interest me in another date with Leo. The second date was better and we opened up a bit more. On the third date, we fooled around. I

made the first move by inviting him over to my place and easing into asking if I could kiss him, which was really nerve-racking!

It was both a thrill and a fear.

It really opened my eyes to how I was used to waiting for men to make the move. Even now, when I’m on Tinder, I’m used to waiting for the guy to message me first. I even have friends who tell me to never text a guy post-hookup. Let him do it first. Otherwise, they say, I’ll sound desperate. And yet, due to the double standard, he isn’t seen as desperate if he sends that first text. And why is that? Is it because women are conditioned to not be assertive? Along with being shamed for wanting sex? That it’s seen as a man’s job to make the moves? It’s an annoying double standard.

This experience challenged me to be braver, but also helped me realize that in a relationship both people need to take turns making the move and openly communicate. It was exhausting constantly making the first move and waiting for the other person to respond.

Overcoming my stage fright at karaoke night Singing it out loud and proud: karaoke is for everyone K ARE N K . TR AN for my whole life — in the shower, while driving my car, and even when I’m cleaning up around the house. But one thing I never felt comfortable doing was singing in front of people. My stage fright has always stopped me from signing up to play at an open mic night or auditioning for a musical, even though I practice in preparation for months in advance.

With karaoke, it’s different. When I’m up on that stage, it doesn’t matter to me that there’s an audience. I’ve surprised myself at times by singing with undiscovered confidence or sometimes completely failing — and that’s fine, too. Even when I hear my voice crack, the MIDI track keeps playing and I have to move on with it.

And when the song ends, I feel my heart racing as I brace for the “boos” and “you sucks,” but they never come.

Here’s my theory: there are no expectations at karaoke, and people will applaud you just for having the courage to get up on stage. People don’t expect you to be Whitney Houston or Freddie Mercury, and they won’t notice if you miss a few notes.

So if you’ve ever thought about singing at a karaoke night, but haven’t yet because you’re waiting for a sign, this is it. You can do it.

There are no expectations at karaoke, and people will applaud you just for having the courage to get up on stage.

TIPS FOR KARAOKE NEWCOMERS 1. Choose

a song in advance. You don’t want to be that person that nails the first verse and chorus before realizing you don’t actually know what the rest of the song sounds like. It happens more often than you think.

2. Choose

Don’t be afraid to sing your heart out on karaoke night!

a backup song. Not all karaoke places are the same, so they might not have your top pick. And though it’s rare, someone could perform the song you were about to choose, right before it’s your turn to go on.

3. Bring

a friend. Singing a duet is always fun, and knowing that you’re both in it together is reassuring.

4. Don’t

be afraid to improvise. If that high note is just not within your vocal range, sing a lower harmony instead.

5. Sing

a karaoke classic. “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are sure to rouse audience members into joining you, and by then, everyone else will be singing so loud you won’t be able to hear yourself.

What makes a good karaoke singer isn’t always their voice. At the end of the night, the most memorable performers are the ones who had the most fun up on stage ­— so don’t worry about what the audience will think. Dance as crazy as you want, make up your own lyrics, and just enjoy yourself. The stage is yours on karaoke night.

LAST WEEK, I took a guy’s number. He called me pretty and said we should hang.

I said, “Sure, why not?”

Later that day, I decided I wasn’t into it.

I was polite in my text: “I’m flattered, but I’m not looking for anything right now.”

He replied that he was cool with being friends.

A few minutes later, he messaged me again.

“A r e y o u a g a i n s t a n y t h i n g , like… forever?”

I was caught off guard. He sent another couple texts about how beautiful he thought I was, and I tried to think of a response.

I felt overwhelmed — I thought I’d been clear.

“I know it took guts to approach me,” I texted, “but I’m going to say no.”

“I can respect that,” came his response.

I still felt uneasy, but I let it slide. Then, as I was making dinner later, my phone buzzed. He was calling me.

I didn’t pick up.

“I’m a bit confused,” came a text moments later. “You seemed pumped in person.”

I didn’t text him back. At this point, I’d said no twice.

My first thought had been to apologize for not being attracted to him. Then I started to feel guilty for supposedly “leading him on.” Were either of these things my fault?

The answer: no.

I didn’t apologize.

For the rest of the day, I was discouraged and tired, ready to write off men forever.

Then some guys in my life became small beacons of light.

If any of you read my Men-struation article from a few weeks ago, you’ll know that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by guys in my life lately. This week was no different.

The night of the texting ordeal, my friend Mitch picked me up to go to the movies.

I spent the whole drive ranting about my experience that afternoon. I finished the story and took a breath, and then Mitch said: “Why is he so hung up on the ‘for now’? Even if you said yes then, you’re saying no now.” I was stunned. And elated.

Was this really coming casually from a guy’s mouth?

Likewise, my younger brother was quick to remind me that I didn’t owe anyone anything, especially not a man.

My friend Craig told me that he was sorry that it happened, and that he was willing to listen if I needed it.

My friend Jake B. was all ears on FaceTime as I ranted for an hour, and was genuinely incredulous at the actions of this guy.

My friend Jake M. spoke at The Vagina Monologues: “Men recognize me as another straight, white man,” he said, “and therefore think they can get away with comments that objectify women and contribute to the

rape culture that has persisted in defiance of reason and decency… I promise to challenge every bigoted comment that I hear with fact, rhetoric, and righteousness on my side… because those of us who have been given the most in society have the duty to give the most back.” I left the theatre in tears, and hugged him for longer than he may have wanted. I thanked him then, but I still don’t know if he knows how much I meant it.

I am not an apologist. In daily life, I call out sexism when I see it. I refuse to ignore the way men have acted in the past and continue to act today — you don’t get points for doing the bare minimum. Not when women around the world are still being harassed, raped, and killed for simply being women.

Not when women can’t even have a conversation with a guy and decline an invitation, only to be pushed and made to feel guilty and uncomfortable. However, I do think it’s important to recognize the ones who are firmly with us. We see you. Thank you to the ones who are honestly, genuinely, truly beside us in this fight. Who aren’t afraid when a woman can do something better than them, but who aren’t condescending when she asks for help. Who tell their friends that a comment wasn’t cool. Because it’s these small things that will ultimately lead us to the biggest changes.

I know why you didn’t vote in the CSA elections — but why didn’t you run?

IN A DEMOCRACY, citizens have, or

ought to have, options, especially when it comes to governmental leadership.

Many people the world over do not have options. China voted last weekend to scrap presidential term limits, and Xi Jinping will probably rule until he dies. Meanwhile in Russia, Vladimir Putin’s victory in this weekend’s election is widely considered to be in the bag.

Putin isn’t even trying — he has hardly

campaigned or put together a platform.

His only threat is voter disillusionment, which might undermine him long-term.

As Angela Dewan put it in an article for CNN, “The problem with an election that doesn’t look like one is that it’s very difficult to get voters excited about it.”

The recent CSA elections didn’t really look like elections either. The candidate for president ran unopposed, as did the candidate for vice-president student experience. Only two candidates ran for vice-president academic, the same as for vice-president external. Only 14 per cent of the electorate cast their ballot.

Paskinov ran unopposed for vicepresident student experience and won.

This is, sadly, how it goes at the CSA. To recap:

In 2015, Peter Miller ran unopposed for academic and university affairs commissioner and won.

In 2016, before the CSA was restructured, four executive candidates ran unopposed: Meghan Wing, Zoey Ross, Ryan Shoot, and Miriam Kearney. All of them won.

In 2018, Jack Fisher ran unopposed for president and won. Aidan

Students love moping about the job market, but every year the CSA opens up a handful of swell positions and at least one of those positions gets only a single applicant.

In 2017, Jay Rojas ran unopposed for president, only losing by a slim margin when reports of his past criminal convictions circulated on social media.

In 2014, S onali Menezes ran unopposed for external affairs commissioner and won.

I’m sure that the list goes on.

I get why students don’t vote — they couldn’t care less. What I don’t get is why they don’t run. CSA executive positions aren’t just fancy titles — they’re jobs. You get paid! You get paid pretty well — a salary of around $30,000! That’s nothing to sneeze at, and better than I made working retail fresh out of university.

Sure, you have to read a bunch of policy and fill out a bunch of paperwork,

Sure, politics is a tough, thankless field, with long hours of an unhappy blend of panic and tedium. But you know what?

So’s everything!

Besides — to use that terrible, terrible phrase — can you imagine how good that would look on your résumé? This is a university where thousands of young people study history, politics, economics, criminal justice and public policy, international development, and many other things, presumably with at least a faint wisp of hope that it will increase their employability.

And only one of those thousands of students could get their act together to run for a $30,000 salaried gig that might set them up for a plum career in management or civil service? People must really hate politics!

Students love moping about the job market, but every year the CSA opens up a handful of swell positions and at least one of those positions gets only a single applicant.

Next year, do us all a favour, Gryphons.

Register to run. I don’t care how you do it. Heck, pull a Putin if you want. Phone it in — skip the debate, spend 30 seconds on your platform, and go golfing. Just get a few more names on the ballot, please.

Then maybe there’ll be something to discuss, and something to vote for. And that’s what democracy is all about.

WE’RE HIRING Editorial and production contract positions for 2018-2019

NEWS EDITOR Coordinates with volunteers to obtain news stories for the paper. These stories can include campus, local, national, and global news.

CLOSED

SPORTS & HEALTH EDITOR Coordinates with volunteer writers to create a balanced presentation of sports, fitness, and health related news.

These positions will consist of 20 to 24 hours per publishing week.

There are 26-28 publishing weeks from September 2018-April 2019.

DIRECTOR OF LAYOUT AND DESIGN Responsible for implementing the overall look of the paper by creating weekly page layouts using Adobe InDesign, as well as creating and formatting ads. This position requires excellent attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to manage time wisely.

A successful candidate will have proven skills using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Hours are 30-34 per publishing week.
