COLORADO DINING REACHES THE STARS

olorado may not rank high on the list of destinations for foodie travelers— but it should. Newly listed in the Michelin Guide for 2023, several restaurants in the Rocky Mountain State have been recognized by the famous French guidebook, and several have earned star ratings, meaning that they are deemed to be dining experiences that are noteworthy.

Three restaurants in Denver were recognized with a Michelin Star, but only one—Brutø (1801 Blake St.)—also earned a Michelin Green Star, meaning the restaurant was successful in minimizing its environmental impact. The menu varies based on what’s available at the market that day, but one thing is consistent—fresh baked bread made with Colorado-raised grains milled inhouse, fired in a hearth that is a focal point in the kitchen.

Brutø is also noted for its interesting wine and cocktail pairings available with the six-course omakase tasting menu —including a spirit-free cocktail tasting menu that’s helpful for nondrinkers, or just those who want to limit their consumption as they grow accustomed to Denver’s elevation.

During a recent visit, the restaurant’s commitment to reducing food waste was also on full display. The dessert served showcased a squash cooked three ways, but the byproduct of the trimmings of the squash weren’t thrown away—they were instead pulverized and baked into a crispy cracker garnish.

For a more casual atmosphere, Mister Oso (3163 Larimer St.) earned a Bib Gourmand designation from the Michelin Guide, meaning the cooking is good quality and good value. Here one finds hearty tacos and ceviches served family style, and a habit-forming coconut milk rice served sizzling in a skillet. It’s rich, but subtle—the perfect accompaniment to a richly simmered mole or braised meat taco.

Visitors can take their ease at the new Thompson Denver (1616 Market St.), walkable to several of the city’s top restaurants and Union Station. Comfortable guest rooms (just try getting out of those fluffy beds) and capable but not-overly-formal service conspire to make for a memorable stay—or maybe it’s just the magic of watching the first rays of the sunrise illuminate the Front Range from one of the upper-floor guest rooms.

For a bit of local history, visit Molly Brown House Museum (1340 Pennsylvania St) to learn about the indomitable Margaret Tobin Brown (the “unsinkable” Denver resident of Titanic fame). The Museum is well-known in Denver, but less so among visitors, and is a fascinating look into the life of this early Western socialite, suffragist, and community leader.

Up the road in Boulder, nestled in the

foothills of the Rockies, are two unbeatable entries in Colorado’s gastronomic annals. Frasca Food & Wine (1738 Pearl St.) focuses its craft on a very specific region of northeastern Italy—Friuli Venezia Giulia (they’ll help diners pronounce it). It’s an intimate space where the staff love to engage in a bit of storytelling about their chosen region and the constantly rotating tasting menu, which, like the region, is equal parts Mediterranean, Alpine, and Balkan. There’s also a prix fixe here, for diners whose constitutions may not require a multihour tasting menu.

Bramble & Hare (1970 13th St.) is certainly more eclectic in décor, and has earned a Michelin Green Star for being literally farmto-table—much of the produce, meat, and herbs come from the owners’ own farm. And at $68 for a three-course menu, it’s one of the more modestly priced Michelin-recognized restaurants in the Colorado survey.

Heading west up the slope, toward Aspen, a good place to break a road journey is in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, for two types of hot springs experiences. The Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves is a naturally heated underground cavern—like a natural steam room (709 E 6th St). There are also spa services, and visitors can choose to soak in the mineral waters in a private room with a tub. The use of the vapor caves dates back to local Native American peoples long before European contact.

Next door is Glenwood Hot Springs (401 N River St), a historic hot springs bathing pool dating back to the 19th Century. Here, guests can buy a day pass and take a dip in the mineral hot springs in a pair of expansive hot and warm pools surrounded by the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and foot of the scenic Glenwood Canyons—a good place for a travel-weary group to spend a few hours resting before continuing their journey.

There are plenty of luxe places to dine in Aspen, but Bosq Aspen (312 S. Mill St.) handily earns its Michelin star with a sumptuous tasting menu. There are plenty of premium items on the menu (Oscietra Caviar, Japanese A5 Wagyu), but Bosq is most famous for its foraging program—and a great deal of the produce comes right out of the mountains in season. A favorite on the menu is the Forest Broth—a lovingly simmered brew of charred local oak bark, porcini mushrooms, juniper berries, and spruce tips—and yes, it does taste like you’re drinking the forest itself, because you quite literally are.

There are also lovely wine pairings (diners can opt for the standard pairing, or the “fine and rare” pairing. Guests who happen to get a table by the door in the winter shouldn’t fret—there are cozy blankets at your disposal.

Also Michelin-recognized is Mawa’s Kitchen (305 Aspen Airport Business Center Unit F). Mawa herself was born in Cote d’Ivoire and grew up in France, so her cooking has a decidedly Gallic air (the decadent burger comes on a brioche bun with a generous slab of boursin cheese) but it was the slightly griddled banana bread with fruit compote that really got our attention.

The main restaurant at The Little Nell (675 E Durant Ave) is Element 47, an upscale-butapproachable dining room that sits in tranquil seclusion just steps away from the slopes. The menu here is a fine gathering of locallyraised meats and locally foraged produce (the mushrooms may inspire fond memories long after the meal).

There are also high-end niceties to add on, like Golden Kaluga caviar or truffles—both White Alba and Black Perigord can be shaved over any dish, but they’re particularly satisfying over the expertly roasted local chicken breast.

For higher-energy slope-side action, pop next door to the W Aspen (550 S Spring St) and head up to the Wet Deck, the hotel’s rooftop, for front-

row seats to the action on the slopes. Here, guests will find the heated pool, hot tubs, fire pits, and bar. When the weather is inclement, it’s just as fine to dine downstairs at 39 degrees, taking in the full weight of the hotel’s whimsical architecture—the vibe is completely Alpine—it looks like it’s straight out of Verbier.

Across Colorado, there are plenty of ways to please the palate, and it needn’t necessarily be at a Michelin-recognized restaurant to make for a memorable experience. But for visitors, simply knowing that the state’s restaurants are being recognized by the guide for “notable cooking, worth a stop” is testament to the innovative cooking and marvelous natural bounty the Rocky Mountain State has to offer traveling gourmands.

Empowerment in Motion: Building Strength and Community in Women’s Fitness Classes

Leading early morning and evening fitness classes, I’ve seen how exercise uniquely empowers women, offering both physical benefits and a profound sense of community. Our morning sessions are particularly popular among those with busy lives, allowing them to prioritize their health before the day’s demands take over. These women arrive with a shared intensity and dedication, committed to starting their day with strength.

Evening sessions bring a different energy, transforming into a social haven where women can unwind and connect after a day’s work. The atmosphere is lighter, filled with laughter and conversation, yet every participant remains engaged in meaningful physical activity. It’s a perfect balance of relaxation and fitness, helping to shed the stress of the day.

Our outdoor workouts are especially appealing in the Texas climate. Morning classes benefit from cooler conditions, offering a refreshing start, while evenings provide a pleasant twilight that helps cool down the body and mind.

Above all, the essence of our classes is the strong community of women we’ve built. This diverse group forms a network of support that extends beyond fitness, motivating and inspiring each other. This camaraderie makes our fitness sessions more than just exercise; they are a celebration of shared strength and wellness. Women choose these programs not only to improve cardio endurance, muscle mass, and bone density but also to enhance balance, flexibility, and overall well-being. They foster friendships, provide support and accountability, and help establish lifelong healthy habits.

Finding Your Center: Three Yoga Poses to Relieve Anxiety and Discover Peace

Yoga is a powerful tool for finding your center and relieving anxiety. Incorporating specific poses into your routine can help you cultivate inner peace and balance. Here are three poses to help you on your journey:

1. Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Child’s Pose is a gentle, restorative pose that calms the mind and body. To perform this pose, kneel on the floor, touch your big toes together, and sit on your heels. Then, separate your knees about hip-width apart and lay your torso down between your thighs. Extend your arms forward, palms down, and rest your forehead on the mat. Breathe deeply, feeling the stretch in your back and shoulders. This pose helps reduce stress and fatigue while promoting relaxation.

2. Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana)

Standing Forward Bend is excellent for releasing tension in the spine and calming the nervous system. Begin by standing with your feet hip-width apart. On an exhale, hinge at your hips and fold forward, allowing your head and arms to hang toward the floor. If needed, bend your knees slightly to ease the stretch. Hold this pose for several breaths, feeling the release in your hamstrings and lower back. Uttanasana helps quiet the mind and relieve anxiety.

3. Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani)

Legs Up the Wall is a restorative inversion that promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety. To perform this pose, sit sideways next to a wall, then lie back and swing your legs up the wall. Adjust your position so that your hips are close to the wall, and your legs are straight up. Rest your arms by your sides, palms up. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, staying in this pose for 5-15 minutes. This pose helps reduce stress, improve circulation, and calm the mind.

Incorporating these poses into your daily routine can help you find your center, relieve anxiety, and discover a sense of peace.

Financial Gifts: Smart Ideas for Celebrating College Graduates

As college seniors cap off their academic journeys and step into a new phase of life, finding the right graduation gift can be a delightful challenge. Instead of the usual fare, consider giving a gift that keeps on giving: a financial boost to jumpstart their journey into adulthood. Here are some thoughtful and impactful financial gift ideas that can help new graduates build a secure future.

1. Start with Stocks: Investing in stocks is a great way to introduce graduates to the world of investing. Choose stocks from companies or industries they are interested in, or consider exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for a more diversified approach. This not only gives them a financial asset but also encourages them to learn about investing and market dynamics.

2. Contribute to a Roth IRA: If the graduate has earned income, opening a Roth IRA in their name is a fantastic way to encourage saving for the future. Contributions to a Roth IRA grow tax-free, and withdrawals in retirement are tax-free as well. This can be an excellent introduction to retirement savings, particularly for young adults.

3. Gift Cards to Financial Services: Financial management tools and services are invaluable for those just starting out. Consider gift cards or subscriptions to financial planning services, apps for budgeting, or memberships to investment

advisory platforms. These tools can help graduates manage their finances more effectively, setting a solid foundation for future wealth.

4. A Session with a Financial Planner: Many young adults do not have the opportunity to discuss their financial situation with a professional. Gifting a consultation with a financial planner can provide invaluable advice tailored to their unique circumstances, from student loans to budgeting and investing strategies.

5. Educational Resources: Financial literacy is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Consider books, online courses, or workshops that cover key topics such as investing, budgeting, and financial planning. Knowledge is power, and understanding financial principles can significantly impact a graduate’s life.

6. Help with Student Loans: If feasible, helping a graduate with their student loan payments can be a deeply appreciated gift. Even a small contribution can reduce the interest accumulation and shorten the loan term, easing their financial burden as they start their career.

In choosing a financial gift for a college graduate, consider their individual needs and interests. Whether it’s a start in investing, a boost for retirement savings, or resources for financial education, these gifts can provide lasting benefits and set them on a path to financial wellbeing. By offering a gift that contributes to their financial independence, you celebrate their achievements and support their future success in a truly meaningful way.

Star Power

Celebrity chef’s Giada De Laurentiis eponymous restaurant has become a true Las Vegas destination.

iada De Laurentiis is a chef who is so famous that, like some of our biggest stars, the mere mention of her first name can bring instant recognition.

In case you’re not familiar with the chef, here’s a brief look at her history: Laurentiis was born in Rome. Her mother was an actress. Her grandfather was a film producer, and she spent plenty of time working in her family’s kitchen and at her grandfather’s restaurant, DDL Foodshow. Her family eventually moved to Southern California, where she graduated from high school. She eventually decided to pursue a culinary career. Laurentiis studied at the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. After returning stateside, she started working in various restaurants in Los Angeles including Ritz-Carlton Fine Dining Room and Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. She also worked as a private chef for the likes of Ron Howard and as a caterer. She was discovered in 2002 by a Food Network executive who read about her and her family in Food & Wine magazine. She was given her own cooking show, “Everyday Italian,” which proved to be a massive success. Her star power was undeniable, and her career skyrocketed. Laurentiis has since hosted numerous shows on the gigantic television network and authored a variety of cookbooks. She even launched gourmet pasta with the Barilla Group. Laurentiis has recently teamed up with Amazon Studios to work on multiple projects.

But her eponymous restaurant was her very first one. Giada opened in 2014, the same year The Cromwell hotel debuted on the Strip. The restaurant seats close to 300 people. The restaurant features a dining room, a lounge and a terrace with alfresco dining along with three private dining rooms. The views of the Bellagio fountains and Caesars Palace are outstanding. The restaurant’s expansive windows make it one light-filled place. The décor feels airy and coastal. The California influence is evident throughout. Think wood ceilings and beams, white chairs and hanging circular chandeliers. Well-lit shelves are behind the check-in desk are stocked with her cookbooks and other items endorsed by her.

Cacio e Pepe Bucatini.

Her cooking largely reflects her heritage. Diners can expect California-inspired Italian fare. One of her top sellers? Lemon (a common ingredient in many of her signature dishes) spaghetti. This light and flavor-packed dish is made with shrimp, mascarpone cheese and seasoned with lemon and basil. It’s also emblematic of her overall approach to cooking, which has garnered her so many fans. The recipes are simple but delicious. They’re also traditional Italian recipes that are given modern flair.

In keeping with the chef’s dedication to quality, it should come as no surprise that all the pasta dishes on this menu are handmade.

Guests can twirl their forks in offerings like ravioli, bucatini, rigatoni and penne rigate. The cacio e pepe bucatini is particularly noteworthy. The decadent and classic pasta dish is served in a warm pecorino Toscano cheese wheel. Diners have the option of adding grilled chicken, shrimp scallops and Maine lobster tail to any pasta entrée. The rest of the menu features chilled seafood, antipasti, salumi and cheese, salads, meats, seafood, sides and desserts. The chef’s signature creations are marked with a G. Some of her other signature dishes include bacon wrapped dates, an arugula salad made with candied lemon, crispy pancetta and parmigiano-reggi-

nao and a massive 28-ounce bone-in Tuscan ribeye topped with a sunny side up egg and a sprinkling of arugula. The menu also features a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Diners also can order plates that are vegan or dairy free.

One eye-catching offering is the seafood tower. The three-tiered tower features three glass plates. The top one is typically filled with oversized shrimp, the second one features Maine lobster tails along with king crab legs and the final layer is topped with raw oysters. Each layer is made out of glass and filled with crushed ice and slices of lemon that add a pop of color.

Dessert options include tiramisu, a truly decadent cannoli cheesecake, a hazelnut soufflé and apple sformato, a cinnamon toffee caked served with caramelized apples and mascarpone gelato. Diners also can order sorbetti and gelati for a literally cool way to finish up dinner here. Even if you don’t like or are just too full to order, don’t leave here without trying her cookies. The oversized lemon ricotta cookies are incredible. They’re light and airy with just a hint of lemony zest. We’ve sampled these, and they are positively irresistible.

day and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Diners can look forward to inventive fare like breakfast calzones, salmon Benedict, polenta waffles and pasta.

Nealy 12 years after first making an appearance on Food Network, she opened her very first restaurant in Las Vegas. And after a decade in business, Giada’s first restaurant and the chef herself show no signs of slowing down. Laurentiis is an undeniable force in the culinary world and a bona fide star. But let’s not forget that this is not just about a celebrity chef. Her food

World Amateur Golf

There are big tournaments and then there’s the World Am in August.

Last August, I finally did something I had been thinking about for years. I played in the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Championship, the largest amateur golf tournament on the planet and one heck of a good time.

Notice that I didn’t say compete, because even though I wasn’t totally embarrassed, I was never in it as far my division (Mid Senior Flight No. 26) was concerned, finishing in the bottom third. But honestly, winning your flight or even winning the whole thing isn’t the goal for most participants. It’s simply to have fun and play in something that feels a little like a tour event, though for the most part not nearly as serious.

It’s well organized and pretty strictly regulated in terms of handicap reporting. It’s also an incredible value, and you meet lots of great folks from all over the country and even other parts of the world, many of whom have been coming here for years. In all, there are over 3,200 golfers playing, and the organizers

use more than 50 courses for the dozens of flights through different age groups.

Brought to you by Play Golf Myrtle Beach, which promotes the wonderful golf at a location that has more golf courses per capita than any other in the United States, the event is slated for Aug. 26-30. The Myrtle Beach World Am was started 40 years ago as a way to lure more golfers to the area during what was traditionally a rather dead week. Back then they were offering three tournament rounds, a few meals, and a small goodie bag for a $175 entry fee. Today, it’s $721 to enter (there are discounts for early bird registration). Adjusted for inflation, it’s similar to the 1984 deal, and you get so much more. It’s now four rounds, the goodie bag on opening day includes about $250 worth of merchandise, like a polo, pullover, hat, and a PGA Tour Superstore gift card, just to name a few).

Best of all, there’s something called the “19th Hole,” which is basically a mini-convention each night at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This is where participants and their guests can get all kinds of free food and drinks (including alcohol) from local establishments who cater, shop various golf vendors who are sponsors, dance to live music all night long, and just generally have a blast. It sure takes the sting off a bad round for a day, but honestly, even if your game is far from par in the wrong direction, it’s hard not to have a good time.

Even a hurricane last year couldn’t spoil it for us. While we did lose one of our rounds, the courses made up for it by offering a free round

36 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024

later on to come back. And after Hurricane Idalia, downgraded to a tropical storm when it made landfall the night after round 2 in late August, the maintenance crews did a bang up job of getting the courses ready the next day when the weather was perfect. And if you somehow won your flight, of course, there was another round the next day to determine an overall champ.

I got to play several terrific courses, including World Tour Golf Links and Tiger’s Eye Golf Club. Each flight is on different courses (there may be some in common).

There are a couple of changes for this year, including the return of tee times for players, replacing the shotgun start from years past. An already impressive golf course lineup will be bolstered by the return of three legends courses – Heathland, Moorland, Parkland – further enhancing the tournament’s popularity. Also returning includes the Mystical group of courses in Man O’ War and Wizard, and the newly renovated Pawley’s Plantation.

Other participating courses for this year include some of my all-time favorites like the layouts at Barefoot Resort, Caledonia Golf & Fish, Grande Dunes Resort Course, Myrtle Beach National, and the Sea Trail Jones Course, just to name a few.

There are nine divisions with most of them broken down by handicap: men 49 and under; senior men (50-59); mid-senior men (60-69),;super senior men (70-79); seasoned seniors (80+); women (59 and under); senior women (60+); senior gross division (50+) gross division, mid-senior (60+) gross division; and women’s gross division. There is also a “Just For Fun” flight, created for players who want to enjoy the World Am experience without the pressure of competition. With the exception of the fun flight, each competitor must have a verifiable handicap through an approved association in their state.

After four days of tournament play, all flight winners and ties advance to the World Championship Playoff, an 18-hole shootout that crowns the event’s overall winner.

37 OTLGOLF.COM

“The World Amateur Handicap Championship is golf’s premier event for recreational players, providing them the opportunity to experience the roller coaster of emotions that comes with 72 holes of stroke play competition,” said tournament director Scott Tomasello. “It’s incredible to think the World Am is entering its fifth decade, but the event’s longevity is a testament to its enduring appeal and the memories and friendships it helps create. We can’t wait to see everyone on the course and at the World’s Largest 19th Hole in 2024.”

If you go, you are responsible for your own accommodations. The World Am does have a list of participating resorts that offer discounts to competitors in the World Am. They are very affordable, and many of them are right on the beach. I made sure I did a beach walk every day. Participating hotels and resorts include the Avista Resort, Breakers, Doubletree, Grand Shores, and Legends Golf Resort.

Myrtle Beach is fairly easy to get to as well. There are lots of direct flights into Myrtle Beach from some of the major airline hubs, but most of us will probably have to connect somewhere. Also, you’ll need your own transportation when you get there, even if you are with buddies. I would definitely recommend renting a car. And unless your buddies are in your flight, each of you will probably have to do that since you will be on different courses at different times.

Also, because of the distance between many of the courses, a rideshare like Uber or Lyft probably isn’t the best option.

In the end, though, it’s all worth it. There isn’t anything this grand in all the world for amateur golfers, so it’s fitting that it took the Grand Strand to put something like this together.

Tour Fatigue

With the fissure of the men’s golf tours, fans’ interest in the professional game seems to be waning

42 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024

he reason? For the past two years, men’s professional golf has been fractured. It occurred after the introduction of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour, which syphoned away many of the PGA Tour’s and DP World Tour’s top players with obscene amounts of money. The back and forth between the established tours and LIV Golf has been a tiresome song to golfers. And although the quality of play on the PGA Tour, for example, might be as good as ever, perception is that the product is diluted.

Many of the stars who might have moved the needle -- Jon Rahm, Brooks Keopka, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and even Phil Mickelson -- can now be found in relative obscurity on the CW network.

Meanwhile, the Sunday ratings of Scottie

Fred Ridley, chairman of Augusta National, acknowledged that golf viewership is down while it’s up in some other sports. During the Masters, for example, the NCAA Women’s Final Four outdrew it. (Of course, thanks in large part to Iowa phenom Kaitlin Clark, it also outdrew every World Series game from 2023 and last year’s NBA Finals.)

“You can draw your own conclusions. Certainly the fact that the best players in the world are not convening very often is not helpful,” Ridley said. “Whether it’s a direct cause and effect, I don’t know. But I think it would be a lot better if they were together more often.”

Also, while core golf fans certainly tuned in, Scheffler, as classy a champion as you will find, is somewhat vanilla, and hasn’t captured the public’s imagination yet.

But most of all, golfers and golf fans have grown tired of barbs being thrown back and forth between tours. They don’t think PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has done a good job navigating these choppy waters, which includes a particularly pesky Shark -- AKA, Greg Norman who heads up the LIV Tour.

The plan, it seemed, was to find a way to unite the tours. But an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into the possible alliance with the Saudia Arabia Public Investment Fund (which backs LIV) could take a year and half or more to conclude, meaning these players will compete on rival tours well into 2025 and beyond. How much damage is being been done?

Many of my golf friends said they didn’t even watch the Masters. One former sportswriter and avid golfer said the LIV Tour has ruined golf.

44 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024
Joe LaCava (left) hired by Tiger Woods to be his full-time caddy works with Dustin Johnson.

“I’m just not interested anymore, especially lately,” said Richard Croome, who now lives in Hot Springs Village, Ark. “This is starting to remind me of what happened in boxing with all these different associations. You can’t keep up with it. And I really don’t want to.”

Most players will tell you that the way it is now isn’t sustainable. Rory McIlroy, who rejoined the PGA Tour’s Policy Board earlier this year, was one of the most vocal critics on the LIV Tour. But now he says for the good of the game, they need to find common ground. Before the Valero Texas Open, McIlroy voiced concern about PGA Tour ratings, which are down at least 20 percent from the previous years. And because of the pressure of the LIV Tour, prize money on the PGA Tour has increased significantly. That’s put a big strain on sponsors, some of which are beginning to bow out.

“I just think with the fighting and everything that’s went on over the past couple years, people are just getting really fatigued of it and it’s turning people off men’s professional golf, and that’s not a good thing for anyone,” McIlroy said.

One of the most polarizing figures in all of this has been Phil Mickelson. (A couple of recent books -- Alan Shipnuck’s “Phil - The Rip-Roaring Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar, and Billy Walters’ “Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk” -- reveal much.) He helped launch the LIV Tour with Norman, and he concedes that professional golf is going through a tough time, but claims that when the dust settles -- aka, the LIV Tour and other tours figure out how to work it out -- professional golf will be better than ever.

45 OTLGOLF.COM
Phil Mickelson. Rory McIlroy.

“I think it’s going to be in a much better place where we bring the best players from the world, and it’s going to open up more opportunities for manufacturing, course design, for players in different parts of the world to be inspired and enter the game. I think it’s going to be in a much better place,” Mickelson was quotes as saying in an article on ESPN.com earlier this year. “But right now, we are in the disruption phase, so we are in the middle of the process. And when it’s all said and done, it’s going to be a lot brighter. But while we go through it, it’s challenging. But we’ll get there.”

Rahm, in the same article, said he agrees with Mickelson.

“Every time I get asked a question like this, I say the same thing: I think there’s room for both. It’s as simple as that,” Rahm said. “I think we have the opportunity to end up with an even better product for the spectators and the fans of the game.

A little bit more variety doesn’t really hurt anybody. So I think, properly done, we can end up with a much better product that can take golf to the next level worldwide, and I’m hoping that’s what ends up happening.”

Again, though, golf fans aren’t seeing that. While some don’t blame tour players from the taking the hundreds of millions of dollars to play the other tour, many believe those players sold out, that they are just in it for the money.

The LIV Tour currently plays 54-hole events, the players can wear shorts, there are team aspects, and music is played during competition, which commences with shotgun starts. For many golf fans, it’s a little much. When and if these tours finally come together, it’ll be interesting to see how all of this reconciled.

Most recreational golfers, however, don’t care. They just want to play more golf.

46 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024

The State of Golf Instruction

I spend a good portion of my time studying the golf instruction industry and have come to some alarming conclusions on how many avid golfers are taking golf lessons. Less than 10% of golfers who play 12X a year seek instruction individually or in a group setting. Golf schools are dwindling at a record pace, why? Is it too expensive? Is it too difficult? Did you have a poor experience? Would prefer to buy a better game? Or does improvement really matter?

Here are some interesting facts about the statistics. Of the 10% of those who are taking lessons, half of them are serious/ competitive players or participating in tournaments. That means regardless, of age or gender, these golfers understand that golf is a multifaceted sport requiring instruction to skill sets in mental game, nutrition, course management, swing, short game, trouble shots and blending all the above from experts. This requires dedication, passion, financial commitment and support from many.

So this leaves us with the other 5% that are

beginners or might want to just play with their spouse or friends without embarrassing themselves, or maybe just the challenge to go from a 25 to a 19 handicap. How about just having more fun!! What’s disturbing is that half of these give up instruction far too soon and never fall in love with the game, therefore falling back into the other 90%.

The reality is that since the pandemic, golf is growing. There are more people playing but are there more people learning? We know from the people watching, viewership is way down, including this years Masters. How can great historians and thousands of golf professionals come together for the common good? Can we make the game less complicated, less expensive, and less time consuming in this millennial age of change? Yes, we can!

Big Sky Golf Paradise

You’ll find one of Montana’s best courses in Rising Sun at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch, plus a whole lot more

50 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024 OTL / TRAVEL

It wasn’t the golf I was thinking about on my way to Big Sky Country last fall. It was more about scenes from the TV show, “Yellowstone.” Not the ones where Cole takes some unfortunate soul out to the “train station,” but more about the grandeur of riding the range with those magnificent Montana mountains in the background.

So naturally, while golf would play a prominent role in this excursion to Mountain Sky Guest Ranch just north of Yellowstone National Park in Montana, my thoughts ventured toward one of the nongolf activities on the itinerary -- horseback riding. I haven’t been on a horse in two decades. How would I do? Would I get saddlesore? But most of all, what was it going to be like riding along the trails on this largely unspoiled wilderness? I would have to wait until the last day of this three-day trip to find out. It would turn out to be the perfect send-off from an experience I’ve certainly never had before on a golf trip. And yes, playing at the ranch’s Rising Sun Golf Course was remarkable, too.

51 OTLGOLF.COM TRAVEL

The Mountain Sky Guest Ranch feeling

While the golf is enough with all the vistas, solitude, and outstanding holes and practice facility, I can’t see going up Mountain Sky Guest Ranch just to play golf. Although I highly recommend playing as much golf as you can when you’re there (the majority of the guests are not golfers). You’d be cheating yourself if you didn’t take in at least one or two of the other ranch experiences, too.

Mountain Sky Guest Ranch is a premium experience. Located on 10,767 acres around the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley, the ranch is owned by Arthur Blank, the billionaire who co-founded Home Depot, and also owns the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta’s United FC of Major League Soccer. Blank also owns PGA Tour Superstore and loves golf, so he commissioned Johnny Miller to design a course for him. The result is arguably one of the most intriguing and scenic layouts in Montana.

Again, golf is just part of the equation there. There’s fly-fishing with expert guides, clay shooting, the aforementioned horseback riding, a spa, fitness center, and even excursions to nearby Yellowstone Park.

52 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024

There’s not a TV on the property, and you can only get internet (cell signals are pretty much nonexistent) at the Main Lodge. So it’s amusing right before breakfast to see everybody catching up on their email, texts, and feeds there as they get ready for a hearty meal that will help them get through a day of adventure.

Dining varies between gourmet plates, buffets and meal rides. The guests all eat together, sort of like a working ranch. The meals are on a schedule, but unlike most working ranches, this is high end. Even the simple stuff like eggs, muffins, and bread are incredibly tasty and fresh. Despite an intentionally limited menu, the meal choices are diverse and even include vegetarian and pescatarian options. Although the steaks, as you might imagine, were among the best I’ve ever had. Breakfasts

and lunches are both buffet style, while dinner is pre-ordered and is usually a three- to fourcourse dining experience that includes dessert. The bonus in this experience is you get to know the other guests, many of which have been there before. And as you take it all in, you can understand why they return.

Let’s talk about Rising Sun Golf Course

Again, though, if you’re a golfer, you have to play this course. The first nine holes opened in 2012, but Blank was so enamored with it, he added nine more. It’s only open to resort guests, so you can basically play as much as you want, whenever you want. I definitely felt like we had the course to ourselves during the rounds I played there.

53 OTLGOLF.COM TRAVEL
Hole 13.

Rising Sun meanders through the rolling hills and grassland of Paradise Valley. Views of the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges surround you. The par-72 course has five sets of tees, ranging from 5,017 yards to 7,130 yards. Every hole is different, and a few of them are pretty difficult, but super interesting. You’ll want to be in the bluegrass fairways off the tee, and they are generous enough to find if you’re in control of your game. The course has lots of bunkers, both in the fairways and around the built-up greens complexes. And there are a few water features, too, like streams crossing the fairway or ponds (like on the 18th), in front of the green.

The No. 1 handicap hole is the 563-yard par-5 dogleg left second, which will require three well-placed shots if you play it conventionally to a green tucked in behind three bunkers. The par 3s are all varied, ranging from 165 yards to 211 yards from the back tees. The course ends with a nice variety of holes — a short par-4 and birdie opportunity on 16, the 207-yard par 3 17th, and the 588-yard par-5 18th, which finishes with a green well-protected by a large pond.

In addition to the course, however, the practice facilities are also top notch. They include a really fun par-3 course located right next to the intimate, but well-stocked clubhouse.

Getting to and around Mountain Sky Guest Ranch

Probably the best way to get to Mountain Sky Guest Ranch is to fly in Bozeman. From there, you can rent a car or use the ranch’s shuttle service. The ride out to the

ranch takes about an hour and a half or so. Once you get there to check in, it’s off to a cabin, which is best described as rustic luxury. Unlike a bunkhouse, the beds are super comfortable, and it’s well-furnished with decks so you can soak in the beauty of the landscape and listen to the sounds of wildlife.

Of course, as referenced earlier, this is a premium destination. Most guests stay a minimum of a week. Packages start around $3,000 and go up to $15,000 depending on the size of the accommodations. Of course, the activities are included.

I got to enjoy a superb, serene massage in the spa. I embarrassed myself one night after dinner at the weekly dance night in the main lodge. Let’s just say my two-stepping skills could use a little work, but I got lots of help from the staff and even other guests, who didn’t shun me even after I stepped on a few toes.

But, again, the icing on the cake was hitting the trails on horseback. Led by an expert wrangler (they saddle your horse for you and even provide a boost to make it easier to mount), we took off for about two hours the morning of our departure day. This was more than your typical trail ride. After a briefing and some instruction, you take the reins and you’re off, through brooks, around bends, along mountainsides, all while taking in views that can pretty much only be seen off the paved road. It’s a natural adventure most will never realize.

And when it was over, I wasn’t sore or even tired. Just simply inspired.

Scottie’s Secret Weapon

Is a breakthrough fitness regimen helping the two-time Masters champ close the deal more often?

he Tiger Woods comparisons are impractical and unfair, but what Scottie Scheffler has done since his rise to No. 1 in the world is worthy of our awe as well as a deeper look at how he got to this point.

In March of 2022, the former University of Texas standout was cashing big checks but was winless on the PGA TOUR. A veteran of one Ryder Cup, sure, but still an unproven commodity until the light switched on at that year’s WM Phoenix Open, his first of (now) 10 professional victories. Anyone who understands athletics at the highest levels, though, knows that lights don’t merely “switch on.” Behind Scheffler’s affable gentle-giant facade is a relentless competitor who grinds as hard as anyone in the pro game trying to unwrap the next competitive edge no one has discovered.

In the off-season before the start of the 2022 season, Scheffler had sat down with his team, swing coach Ranch Smith and physio Dr. Troy Van Biezen, to create a working plan for bigger success. Smith knew the few minor deficiencies in Scheffler’s swing and Van Biezen, now the chief physical trainer for the NHL’s Dallas Stars, pinpointed it was Scheffler’s body that could be his biggest asset if they were able to start putting in the right work. “We found out he didn’t have the cardiovascular endurance to close out

some of the tournaments he was leading and probably should have won early in his career. He had some fatigue on the back nine. I worked with Tiger when he won the 2019 Masters and he told me I want to be as physically, emotionally and mentally strong when I tee off on Thursday as when I’m going down the back nine on Sunday. That always stuck in my head.”

The new gameplan in the gym became focused on improving the tall Texan’s stability, mobility and flexibility. Scheffler made endurance training a point of emphasis that off-season, so he wouldn’t ever fatigue late in rounds. In his first statement season, Scheffler took home his first career major at the Masters (among his four wins that season) and was named PGA Tour Player of the Year.

In 2023, despite highly broadcasted putting woes, Scheffler wasn’t done. “During the offseason, we decided that (adding) a little bit of strength would be good because I’ve really gotten a good baseline over the last couple of years. Working with the GolferForever Swing Trainer and my fitness coach, we’ve gotten a really good baseline and I’ve now got good muscular balance. We were able to build a little bit of strength from there. I’m not going to drastically change my body and try to hit the ball 50 yards farther. I’m just trying to gain little bits and pieces at a time,” the two-time major winner said.

In 23 starts in 2023, Scheffler collected 13 top-fives and 17 top-10s, both high marks for any player in a single season on Tour since 2005 – to repeat as 2022-23 PGA Tour Player of the Year (John Rahm’s LIV departure played a factor there, too). Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods to win the Jack Nicklaus Award in back-to-back seasons since he captured the award three straight years from 2005-07. In an absurd start to this season, he has already amassed four wins including a second Masters title, a T-2, T-3 and only one finish outside of the top 10 in his first 10 starts. He’s already earned almost $19 million this season. He leads in every critical Strokes Gained category and when he leads now, he closes; and will, in all likelihood, three-peat as Player of the Year.

“Strength and conditioning is always big for me, just being ready to go on Sunday. My team, Randy and Troy, have a really good synergy and they love working together. And it’s been pretty easy for me just to kind of follow their ideas. Randy’s always been the swing guy and a lot of the imbalances I had in my body were causing my swing to become a certain way, so when Randy

wanted to change my swing a little bit and make little changes, it’s pretty easy for us just to go to Troy and say hey, you know, ‘my right hips been a little bit tight, it’s hard for me to get in my right side’ and that’s something that we can work on in the gym very easily,” Scheffler said.

Through his work with Van Biezen and tools created by training experts GolfForever, Scheffler can emphasize key golf fitness factors emphasis like loading into his trail hip and building the core strength needed to be the positions in the golf swing Smith wants him to be in for optimal swing efficiency. Scheffler isn’t just a GolfForever spokesman. He’s an investor in the company, appears in several workout videos on the GolfForever mobile app and even has his caddie Ted Scott keep the GolfForever Swing Trainer in the bag during all of his practice sessions on Tour.

The difference in his ability to repeat the purity and efficiency in his swing has been staggering. He leads the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, Strokes Gained: Approach to the Green, Greens in Regulation, Proximity to the Hole. Make no mistake. Scheffler has the most

repeatable - and most lethal - swing in golf right now and it almost doesn’t matter who’s second best. That repeatability starts with fitness and Scheffler’s commitment to the grind.

“For me, it’s all about consistency. When I’m practicing at home, I want to feel the same way I do when I show up at a tournament. Having a workout routine that I go through each time is extremely important. That way, when I show up to the golf course, my body feels good. I’m not fighting to get into my right side or fighting a tight spine. When I show up, I’m ready to go and I can just get right into it and, for longevity. Injuries happen when you’re not properly warmed up. Having the ability to show up and be able to hit drivers or do whatever I need to do on the driving range, is very important, versus having to ease into a practice session by hitting a bunch of wedges to warm up. Then, hopefully, I’m trying to have a long career on the PGA Tour and having the consistency and keeping my body in the proper shape is going to be huge as my career progresses,” he said.

Regular golfers can benefit from Scheffler’s workout programs via Golf Forever’s app-based exercise and pain relief program , which he began

using the week before winning at TPC Scottsdale for the first time in 2022. Several tour pros have followed suit as well as more than 40 college golf programs. The trainer is sold at more than 400 retail stores, allowing any golfer to follow virtually the same workout routine as the game’s top player.

GolfForever is the first golf-specific training program to embrace the approach of home exercise equipment paired with streaming instruction that customizes each golfer’s exercise routines specifically for them, based on a proprietary strength and flexibility test. The GolfForever Swing Trainer, highlighted by its asymmetrical resistance training bar that can be anchored easily at home, the gym or the course, is a three-in-one training tool that additionally creates premium resistance bands with handles and a D3 swing weightoptimized heavy warmup club. All three uses, driven by guided instruction from golf fitness and medical experts in the GolfForever app,

directly benefit the strength, mobility and movement patterns in the golf swing.

If it seems like you’re seeing the GolfForever Swing Trainer everywhere that’s because it is available at GolfForever.com and on Amazon, and in leading golf retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, and PGA Tour Superstore. The GolfForever mobile golf training application is available for download and 30 days of free access on the Apple Store and Google Play.

If you think you’ve got some of the same inner drive as Scottie, the potential to level up your physical ability to swing better might be as simple as starting your own GolfForever workout plan. It’s hard to argue with the method that got a two-time Masters champ to the top of the sport. The company’s slogan is “Play Without Limits” and if you feel your body is limiting your swing, GolfForever could be just what the doctor ordered.

OTL / EQUIPMENT 64 THE LUXE ISSUE 2024 New Tour-Feel Training Aid Can Unwrinkle Your Funky Swing

Learn how to create pro-level width in your golf swing

Few things in golf rival of the embarrassment of being called out for your “chicken wing” looking swing. We all want to look like the pros over the ball, but sometimes bad habits creep up and the compensations we develop make us look pure beginners. One of the leading culprits of this is failing to get to the top of the backswing with proper width. Good width – picture the distance of your hands away from your body at the top of the backswing if your lead arm is basically straight – can help you make cleaner, more consistent contact. And who doesn’t want to be a better ball striker?

Now there’s a training aid on the market that helps you train proper width and it’s been created by some of the top minds in the game.

Developed by acclaimed PGA teaching pro and inventor Dan Frost, Tour-Feel™ by Sure-Golf is a training aid crafted from the insights of the world’s elite golfers and top coaches. The secret to a masterful golf swing lies in its width – a fundamental, yet often-elusive element. Tour-Feel simplifies this crucial component, allowing you to achieve and internalize tour-level width through intuitive sensation.

Playing professional Edoardo Molinari is a huge proponent of Tour-Feel and the way it helps train proper width in the golf swing. If you would like to create an editorial review of the Tour-Feel or learn more about its benefits from its inventor, Dan Frost, just let me know.

“As a coach, I’m always interested in the common denominators of success, the patterns, movements and intentions that sit under the hood of great players,” says Frost. “I invented Tour-Feel™ to allow golfers to experience the sensation of width all the way from takeaway to finish creating an effective, consistent swing that works against the common narrow-to-wide swings that seem to be a disease, creating a nation of slicers. The feeling of width is key to creating more rotary swings with superior sequencing, and the Tour-Feel™ does this without complication.”

This multi-stage resistance band firmly links the lead shoulder and hand right from the outset – using resistance. The lead shoulder is often considered the true center of the swing, and a long lead arm is crucial for establishing and retaining width. Perfect this bond, and you’ll unlock unparalleled power, precision, and consistency.

Golf Digest named Tour-Feel the best training aid at the 2024 PGA Show and after a few swings with it, you might just see why its instant feedback is making believers of golfers of every skill set. This training aid has potential to be one of those products that lasts generations and helps thousands and

thousands of golfers.

Elite golfers possess a wide-to-narrow-to-wide swing radius. That is, they stretch the lead arm and shoulder in the backswing, harnessing more power potential. As they transition into the downswing, they refine this width, creating dynamic lag. The swing concludes with a powerful and expansive followthrough, ensuring peak power, control and flawless ball striking. The Tour-Feel™ is designed to embed this very sensation into every golfer.

“In just a matter of swings, imagine harnessing the immense power of width,” says Frost. “Tour-Feel™ isn’t just a training aid; it’s a game-changer. It offers an unmatched skill transfer rate, allowing you to feel the precise sensations and mechanics of a wide radius and powerful downswing. Within no time, you’ll internalize what ‘right’ truly feels like. The best part? The unique sensation is retained once the training aid is removed, allowing your new move to seamlessly integrate into your game.”

Already the No. 1 Width Trainer on Tour, Tour Feel™ helps golfers unlock their untapped power through dynamic width training. They experience and train correct swing width using the aid, and learn by sensation rather than information. This way, they can improve their ball striking and compression. The product is scientifically proven by Gears 3D Biomechanics, and applicable to a wide range of skills throughout the bag. It’s suitable for both right-handed and left-handed golfers.

Vintage Champagne

66 OTL / WINE THE LUXE ISSUE 2024
STORY BY HUNTER HAM

Vintage Champagne is a celebration in a bottle, capturing the essence of exceptional years in the vineyards of Champagne. Pouring a glass of 2008 Dom Pérignon, I am reminded of the artistry and patience involved in crafting this exquisite wine, which is why it’s so special. But unlike nonvintage Champagne, which blends multiple years, vintage Champagne is made from grapes harvested in a single, remarkable year. This distinction makes it a true reflection of that specific season’s unique climate and conditions!

I remember the first time I tasted a vintage Champagne—a 1996 Krug gifted by a dear friend and cherished ever since. The experience was transformative. But the complexity and depth of flavors— from delicate citrus and white flowers to rich brioche and toasted almonds—were mesmerizing. It felt like I was tasting a piece of history, with each sip revealing the story of the year it was made.

One of the most enchanting aspects of vintage Champagne is its ability to evolve over time and develop even more character. But as it ages, it develops layers of flavor and a richness that can only come from years of careful cellaring. This maturation process is a testament to the skill and dedication of the winemakers, who meticulously craft these wines to stand the test of time.

But vintage Champagne is not just about the taste; it’s about the moments it helps create, making every occasion feel more special! Whether it’s a milestone celebration, a romantic dinner, or simply a quiet evening of reflection, a bottle of vintage Champagne elevates the occasion. It’s a reminder of the beauty and joy that can be found in life’s finest details.

In a world that often feels rushed and impersonal, vintage Champagne invites us to slow down, savor, and appreciate the artistry and tradition behind each bottle, and this makes it all the more special! It’s a luxurious experience that connects us to the past and allows us to celebrate the present in the most delightful way.
