As the earth and many of us awakens from its wintry slumber, so too does the spirit of exploration and rejuvenation in our Spring 2024 issue. Spring symbolizes new beginnings and the rekindling of life, a theme that resonates deeply within the pages of this edition. Hope springs eternal. We hope to make better choices, we hope to make improvements in relationships, business and in your game (insert endeavor of choice).

As in every issue, OTL is excited to share this collection of material, crafted by our exceptional team of writers. Their talent is to capture the essence of the story and to always create a desire in you to give it a go or whirl. We want you to play there, go there, eat there and stay there. That’s our mission.

In addition to the pro writer, we have a guest writer making their debut. A particularly heartwarming contribution is our feature on Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. This story comes to us from an unlikely source – a young schoolgirl named Kayla. While working on a school project about national parks, Kayla’s discovery of Cuyahoga’s unique allure inspired her to do it as a class project. She raved about the park and suggested we do a story about it in the magazine. Her enthusiasm was infectious, detailing the family-friendly activities, breathtaking sights, and the park’s year-round appeal. I told her, why don’t you do it.

Kayla spearheaded the story. She relentlessly stayed on task. Her perspective brought an invigo-

rating freshness to our publication, and we extend our sincerest gratitude to Kayla for her invaluable contribution.

We all need to remember to see things through the eyes of a child. Appreciate what goes right rather than fixate on what went wrong.

As always, our issue is brimming with content that caters to diverse interests. For the travel enthusiasts, we’ve delivered a collection of destinations that promise both adventure and tranquility. The golf aficionados will appreciate the unforgettable Cascata. It’s a must play no matter for locals or as a destination course.

In our health and wellness section, we take a lighthearted look at fitness. Just walk it out and move. It’s said that golf is a good walk spoiled. Perhaps, but a good walk is a good day. We explore the joy and health benefits that come from simply putting one foot in front of the other, whether on the green or a trail.

As we transition into the warmer months, this issue of our magazine is more than just a collection of articles; it’s a celebration of renewal, discovery, and the joy of stepping into the new season with an open heart and mind.

Way Out West: Find Luxury in the Wild at Wickenburg’s Rancho de los Caballeros Dude Ranch

Driving up the main entrance of Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg—about a 75-minute drive from metro Phoenix—is an experience. Turn left off US-60 and drive about 10 minutes on a two-lane road before turning left. From there, you’ll drive on winding roads that will take you to the main lobby. Open a wood door and see Western influence everywhere.

he check-in area features a wood case behind the front desk where guests will receive an oversized (and real) room key. Just a few steps from the check-in desk is the main lobby featuring white bricks, a copper colored oven hood, plush leather chairs and high ceilings. Just a few steps from the lobby was a firepit featuring expansive views of the surrounding area. We loved savoring the breathtaking views after we first arrived.

Just a short walk from the lobby, our guest casita was generously sized and one of the biggest ones we’ve ever stayed in. The sitting area featured a couch, large windows, a balcony, two chairs and a table with four chairs. Farther down the hall was a sleek bar that was outfitted with a fridge that held a cheese plate. Just a few more steps down the hall was an oversized bathroom with a glass shower, jet tub and double vanities. The bedroom featured a king sized bed that was topped with one of the softest mattresses that we’ve ever slept on. The kind of bed you sink into for a few inches.

Next up was dinner at ‘19’, the ranch’s new fine dining restaurant at the golf club. But first, we had to savor the views just outside of the club house. We took in sweeping vistas of a nearby mountain range that was studded with clouds in the sky and the greenery of the golf course. The sun was setting and lit up the sky in many different shades of pink. Arizona is known for its winter sunsets, and this one was special. When the weather’s good, try to snag a table by the windows or outside.

Inside, the golf club featured a dark, sleek bar and a room surrounded by oversized tables. The main dining room included high ceiling outfitted with wood beams, a fireplace and an impressive allglass wine cellar that held some of the restaurant’s collection of thousands of wine bottles. Before dinner, we enjoyed drinks by the bar. We enjoyed an Arizona classic: a pink prickly pear margarita with

a salt rim. This variation was just sour enough without being too sweet or savory.

Chef Jacob Ellis runs the kitchen at 19, named that because it can be the last stop on the property’s 18-hole championship golf course. 19 serves fine fare with international flair. Guests can order a la carte or from a five-course tasting menu. 19 also serves brunch. Diners can literally taste global inspiration in dishes like the Hokkaido Scallop cooked in a salsify buttermilk puree with dill, pink peppercorn, shaved fresno chili and fried ginger. Our meal kicked off with an amuse bouche of roasted shrimp and caviar. Next, we devoured creamy burrata and a kabocha squash tart that tasted just like fall. We loved the thick sourdough bread that was plated with dollops of creamy plain and herbed butter.

For our first course, we feasted on a lobster bisque with tarragon and lemon cream. We enjoyed this lighter take—not as thick as most variations—that was dramatically poured into a bowl. For our main course, we opted for the

mandolina pasta. The stuffed pasta shells were topped with a hearty red mushroom ragu that we couldn’t get enough of. We also devoured a few bites of salty and flaky Chilean seabass. Another diner ordered an epic 28 ounce tomahawk steak served bone in, covered in sauce and intended for two. It was quite the site.

To finish, we dug into a decadent chocolate marquis made with chocolate ganache and a dash of hazelnut crumble. We headed to bed with our stomachs full and started the next day off with some recreation. I tried my hand at archery, which turned out to be fun and harder than I thought. In our time at the property, we found that the resort really lived up to its name. Our archery instructor was a seasoned outdoorsman and an experienced hunter. Next up, I toured the expansive property that sits on about 20,000 acres. I saw a skeet and trap shooting range with some sweeping views of the property. Rancho de los Caballeros is a pretty stunning place with spectacular vistas nearly everywhere.

We also toured the spa. The spa includes an outdoor labyrinth and an infared sauna. Like all spas, the main building where the spa is housed smelled fresh and clean. The spa itself felt serene with the light streaming in from the expansive windows. The nearby scenic outdoor area where the labyrinth is located is also the site of weddings and outdoor yoga classes. Next up, we checked out the stables. This ranch is very well known for its horseback riding program and has been for 75 years. We spoke with two employees who worked as wranglers. One young man even showed me a video of him riding a horse in a rodeo. I even got to pet one of the horses and see inside the tack room. The ranch offers guided morning and afternoon rides so you can admire the desert scenery. Visitors can also try their hands at team penning. If horseback riding isn’t your thing, the ranch hosts two daily horses so you can watch the ranch’s 85 horses gallop along a guided path. Golf is another highlight here. The property is home to an 18-hole golf course along with a driving range, chipping area and putting green.

We ate lunch outside by the pool before heading out. We enjoyed a sandwich, chips and desserts from a buffet. The air was crisp. The sky was blue, and it was a pleasant sendoff to a nice stay at Rancho de los Caballeros.

What to do in Wickenburg

Located just off US-60, downtown Wickenburg is

filled with charming and quaint shops and restaurants. Here are two places we checked out on our visit.

Desert Caballeros Western Museum

This museum is a colorful mix of art and historical displays that chart the history of Wickenburg as a once thriving gold mining town. We loved checking out the vibrant Western landscape paintings of Howard Post on the first floor of the museum. We also got to see mining equipment and learn more about this city’s history. Downstairs, scenes of historical Wickenburg had been recreated. Think homes, hotels and school rooms. We especially enjoyed the hologram of a storekeeper talking about life in the West. In a separate area, we saw a variety of colorful Mexican art that was all about Dia de los Muertos, a holiday that commemorates those who have passed.

Buttermilk & Honey Bakeshop

Mere steps from the museum is the Buttermilk & Honey Bakeshop. The bakery is standing room only but has outdoor seating both out front and to the side of the main building. We enjoyed inhaling the aromas of baked goods and admiring the cookies, scones, muffins and other treats underneath the glass case. We devoured a cookies and cream brownie—made with an Oreo cookie baked into the dessert—before we hit the road.

Walking Your Way to Better Health

Walking is more than just a way to get around. In our busy lives, it’s a simple, accessible form of exercise that can significantly contribute to overall health and well-being. Contrary to the popular belief that 10,000 steps a day is the golden standard, recent studies suggest that you can reap significant health benefits with a lesser number of steps, making it a feasible goal for people of all ages and fitness levels.

For years, fitness trackers and health guidelines have touted the idea that walking 10,000 steps a day is essential for good health. While this is a commendable goal, it might not be necessary for everyone. This figure, equivalent to about 5 miles, can be daunting, especially for beginners or older adults.

A study by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute discovered that walking about 7,000 steps per day can lower the risk of death in middle-aged adults by up to 70% compared to those who walk fewer steps.

According to a breakdown by Runstreet, the optimal step count varies with age. For those

under 60, aiming for 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day can be beneficial. However, for older adults, a target of 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day can be equally advantageous.

Walking on a golf course provides a unique fusion of exercise and leisure, appealing to both golf enthusiasts and nature lovers. From the perspective of steps, golf course walking or walking during a round of golf offers an opportunity to surpass daily step goals effortlessly.

This alternative walking experience underscores the idea that staying active doesn’t have to be routine; it can be an enriching journey that nourishes both body and soul.

We encourage our readers to start where they are and incrementally increase their daily step count. Whether it’s a stroll in the park, a brisk walk to the local store, or simply choosing stairs over elevators, every step counts towards a healthier you. A Timeless Classic

In a city that is (largely) unconcerned with the past, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago has stood the test of time.

as Vegas is a city that changes rapidly. A publicist once told me that six months in Vegas is like three years in nearly any other city, growth wise. But in such a fast-paced city, it’s comforting to know that some restaurants have staying power. Spago is one of them. One of the reasons for its longevity (the restaurant’s Vegas location has been open for over 30 years) is that Spago is backed by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. Puck has quite the background. Austrian-born Wolfgang Puck started cooking with his mother as a child. Next, he worked at top kitchens in France before landing in the United States. He started out in Indianapolis and then went to Los Angeles in 1975 where he worked as a chef at Ma Maison. There, he garnered a celebrity following that he maintains to this day. Puck opened the first Spago in 1982 in West Hollywood, and Spago is well known for serving California-inspired cuisine. Spago’s second location opened in Vegas in 1992. That opening is arguably credited with helping position Las Vegas as a true fine dining destination.

“When Spago came in ‘92 and actually started the fine dining scene. I think that Spago has carried that torch as far as fine dining and to help other celebrity chefs come onto The Strip and was able to actually transform Las Vegas into what it currently is. And that’s one of the top fine dining food capitals of the world,” says Roberto Garcia, general manager of Spago.

Spago first Vegas iteration opened at Caesars Palace. That location eventually closed, and Spago opened at the Bellagio Resort and Casino in 2018. The complementary relationship was evident from the start.

“To me, it’s a perfect partnership. The Bellagio being iconic in itself for Las Vegas and Wolfgang Puck, an iconic chef. So it’s a great collaboration between the Bellagio and Wolfgang Puck,” says Garcia.

One of the restaurant’s signature features? Its prime views of one of the Bellagio’s most spectacular features: the outdoor Bellagio Fountains that put on quite a show right on the Vegas Strip. The fountains were an integral part of the restaurant’s design.

“The fountains were everything for us,” said designer Gelila Puck, in a press release. “We used the water as a key element in the design of the restaurant, bringing the beautiful feature to the forefront of the dining experience from the moment our guests enter the restaurant. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows highlight the grandeur of the space while distinct dining spaces meld classic architecture with modern art, all creating an atmosphere as memorable as the food.”

The outdoor patio puts diners in closest proximity to the fountains but the main dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer up breathtaking views too. Spago also features two private dining rooms that can hold up to 20 and also feature views of the fountains. The bar and lounge area is outfitted with brass fixtures, oak wood floors and leather seating that lends a sleek feel to the space.

Spago serves dinner daily and brunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. One of the most prominent menu items that has been on Spago’s menu since the beginning is the smoked salmon pizza. Served as a starter, this pizza is topped with smoked salmon served with dill cream, red onion and salmon pearls. Many guests, Garcia tells us, will order blue caviar on top. Another stand-out entrée is the chef’s veal wiener schnitzel, which is accompanied by marinated cucumbers, fingerling potato salad and baby arugula. The wiener schnitzel is a signature Puck creation and is his mother’s recipe. The steamed wild Alaskan halibut is another stand-out option. The light fish is sea served with jasmine rice in addition to mushrooms, bok choy and baby carrots that are all seasoned with toasted garlic chili soy.

Seasonal seafood towers are a popular and not to mention impressive order, especially at brunch time. These come in either two or three tiers. They’re piled high with an abundance of seafood that can include poached shrimp, Maine lobster, mussels, East and West Coast oysters, tuna poke and king crab legs. Brunch guests will often pair those towers with bottomless mimosas. The Chinos chicken salad is another popular brunch offering and is tossed with cashes, wontons and a ginger soy vinaigrette that makes for one tasty and texture-rich salad.

Drinks-wise, the two best-known cocktails are the Reel Around the Fountain, a mix of Aperol, St. Germain liqueur, strawberry and Moscato—and the Whole Lotta Love, a lychee martini. Unique to Spago’s Vegas location are 60-ounce cocktails that guests can enjoy as a group and pour from a spout. Thirty-ounce pitchers are available too.

Garcia has worked for Puck for nearly 30 years. He started as a busboy at Spago when it was at Caesars Palace and has been the general manager of Spago for about two years. What does he feel are Spago’s keys to success?

“What Wolfgang Puck and Spago embody is hospitality,” says Garcia.

He told us that if guests have dined in the restaurant before, the staff will know their names.

“It just feels like a home when they come in,” he says.

That connection to the restaurant is what keeps guests coming back. Spago has a celebrity following. Taylor Swift dined at the Beverly Hills location in early January.

“All the celebrities that come in go see Wolfgang. Joan Collins, Sidney Poitier sit down, and he sends out the salmon pizza, the tuna cones, and he personalizes each and every one of those connections, and no matter what your likes and dislikes, he tailor fits each experience to who the guest is,” says Garcia.

What does the future hold for this storied restaurant? The brunch menu might be redone. Tasting menus are also in the works. The restaurant is constantly innovating to stay relevant.

“We continue to elevate and continue to find what else we can do. What we’re doing is good, but you can always be better. We do not settle for good. We always want to be better. We always want to be the best,” says Garcia.

But no matter what the future holds for Spago in Las Vegas, it’s reassuring to know that some restaurants really do stand the test of time.

The Fontainebleau hotel’s chic lounge, Nowhere, beckons with a sleek vibe and creative cocktails.

The 67-story luxurious Fontainebleau Las Vegas hotel opened in December of 2023 to great acclaim. You no doubt saw photos of the grand opening party featuring celebrity guests like Tom Brady, Cher and Kim Kardashian. Inside the sprawling and not to mention tallest occupiable property on the Las Vegas Strip is speakeasy-style bar Nowhere. The bar, one of seven at the hotel, is named after the original Fontainebleau Miami Beach’s most striking architectural feature, the floating “stairway to nowhere.”

Nowhere feels like a secret. The dimly lit in-

terior is sleek. Guests can look forward to a chic U-shaped bar with lit shelves behind it, modern hanging chandeliers and plenty of plush seating surrounding a small elevated stage where live bands often perform. You might just hear light jazz, a specialty here. Guests are also welcome to play pool or backgammon. Nowhere offers plenty of spaces where large groups can enjoy each other’s company and couples can cozy up to one another. Cocktails are creative and clever too. The menu rotates regularly, but expect names like Let’s Elope and Stairway to Nowhere. Until now, going Nowhere has never been so stylish.

As the warmth of spring begins, let’s embrace the chance to level up our game while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. With the right gear and attitude, there’s no limit to what we can achieve on the course.

For many, myself included, spring is the pinnacle of the golf season. The warmer weather allows us to shed heavy layers and embrace light, comfortable attire on the course that provide protection from the sun’s rays while allowing freedom of movement.

Skirts and dresses are the way to go, keeping us feeling cool and looking cute as we play through.

Spring offers the perfect opportunity to spend ample time honing our skills on the range. With longer daylight hours and milder temperatures, practicing becomes a joy rather than a chore. It’s a chance to focus on refining our overall golf game and addressing any weaknesses in our swing or technique.

Before heading out to the range, it’s essential to check the dress code at your club. However, my personal go-to outfit for range sessions typically includes a light, long-sleeve blouse paired with leggings or lightweight pants. This ensemble strikes the perfect balance between comfort and performance, allowing me to practice with ease and confidence.

Golf Hoodies Aren’t Wearing Out Their Welcome

The streetwear staple has been elevated to a real performance garment, and it’s stylish too

hen Englishman Tyrell Hatton won the 2020 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, he was wearing a hoodie. His choice of apparel almost overshadowed his real accomplishment – a four-stroke victory on the DP World Tour’s flagship event.

Hatton sported an Adidas hoodie through much of the week, which drew plenty of attention, with both positive and negative reactions. But if that week was any indication of what was to follow, it might have been when Hatton tweeted out that he and Adidas were planning to give away 10 hoodies at random to followers who responded with their size. It garnered nearly 14,000 responses from golf fans hoping to receive a freebie.

Of course, there were some negative comments, too, and to this day, there are still clubs that prohibit their members and guests from wearing them at their facilities. Hatton got plenty of flack via social media. One even called him a “thug,” which Hatton took as a compliment. “I’ve been called a lot worse,” he said with a laugh on a YouTube video.

But the number of detractors is dwindling, as most clubs carry hoodies now in their golf shops, and pretty much every golf apparel brand offers at least one, many for both men and women. Even FootJoy, which has a reputation as one of the most conservative golf attire outfits in the business, just added a full-zip hoodie to its ThermoSeries collection of outerwear. And brands like Adidas, True, TravisMathew and many more offer a wide variety.

Hoodies are here to stay in golf – at least for the foreseeable future.

“Players are looking for comfortable and stylish pieces, and the hoodie is the perfect crossover piece that provides versatility and functionality,” says Lupe Benitez, senior vice president of design for Perry Ellis International, whose brands include Callaway Golf Apparel and Original Penguin.

“Whether it’s a professional on the PGA Tour or weekend golfers, hoodies offer a new variation on simplistic style and comfort on the course,” Benitez adds. “The hoodie also provides another layering option for players of all skill levels, to

extend their golf season as temperatures drop.”

They work well early in the season, too, when temperatures are just starting to warm up.

Hoodies are offered in all sorts of styles, weights, materials, and technologies. And they are both stylish and comfortable.

Stitch Golf, for example, has been offering hoodies since 2020. “Now we have hoodies in light-weight ‘Scout,’ mid-weight ‘Hudson,’ and even our ‘Kensington Merino’ wool sweater.” says Brad King, CEO of Stitch Golf.

One of the best aspects of wearing a hoodie on the golf course is that they translate well off the course, too. Which should come as no surprise. After all, that’s where they originated.

But why wear them for golf? Some players have commented that the hoods on hoodies can be distracting, especially when they flop around in the wind. So aren’t they just a pullover with a hood?

While that argument has some legitimacy – since you rarely see a professional golfer wear the hood while swinging – many players do use the hood as they walk or when it gets particularly cold and/or windy. Or if it has some sort of waterproofing – like one offered by the Original Penguin – a hoodie is ideal for playing in the rain.

But maybe the best part about hoodies on the golf course is they simply look cool, and they are comfortable. There’s something about being snuggled by a soft material, being able to put your hands in the plush pockets, and then just wearing it into the clubhouse, out to a restaurant, or to a pub in town right after golf.

One of the most popular hoodies on the market today is the incredibly comfortable Cloud Hoodie by TravisMathew, a favorite certainly among green grass shops. At Bluejack National north of Houston, a private resort that boasts the first Tiger Woods designed golf course in the United States, they sell their allotment of Clouds almost as fast as they get them in. And TravisMathew offers a women’s line, too, that’s doing well.

“It’s casual and comfortable, but it’s not just a plain old thing,” said Mattie

Taggert, former Buejack’s merchandiser for its various shops, which includes golf. “They’re wearing hoodies, but they want to keep it a little classier, not as big and slouchy, not as oversized as it might have been in the past. A little more formfitting has definitely been the trend.”

True, an apparel company based out of the Pacific Northwest, has been big on hoodies for a few years now. The company’s latest (True is also known for its “Dead Golfer” hoodie) is the Future Staples hoodie, which can be customized for groups or golf courses. It’s water repellent so it’s perfect for damp cool climates. And again, it’s a garment that works great off the course.

Again, though, the proliferation of players who are wearing hoodies on the professional tours seems to be driving the trend with consumers. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McElroy (Nike), Justin Thomas (Greyson), Cameron Smith (Original Penguin), Jordan Spieth (Under Armour), Rickie Fowler (Puma), and Ryan Moore as well as Mark Hubbard (True) are just a few of the men wearing hoodies while they compete in tour events.

“The more golf fans see the look, the more they are going to aspire to it” says J.D. Rastovski, VP of Global Sales for True, “Because the hoodie is a layering staple that combines a statement look with comfort and definitely makes golf look a little cooler.”

Women pros have been wearing them, too, and the LPGA along with Michelle

Wie started a HoodieForGolf campaign to raise money for diversity in golf by selling a specially designed one. Started in 2021, the tie-dyed hoodie designed by Wie has been worn by players from the men’s and women’s tours, celebrities, announcers, and athletes from a wide variety of sports, supporting the LPGA Renee Powell Fund and the Clearview Legacy Foundation.

And Ashworth recently debuted to golf consumers its “Golfman” hoodie, originally created as a gift for PGA Professionals. Combining cotton and polyester into a stretchy material, the company calls it “insanely soft & stylish.” In the end, it’s just another example of another golf segment embracing the look and performance of hoodies. Needless to say, when your golf pro is wearing a hoodie at your club, it’s OK for you to do the same.

The fairways are beautiful, lush, and green, perfect for that second shot on the green. However, one thing about Cascata’s fairways is that you’ll have a hard time finding a flat lie, so watch out for those angles and be prepared to adjust for some uneven lies.

One of my many favorite aspects of playing at Cascata is having a forecaddie with your round. The caddies are with you from beginning to end and ensure that you get the most out of your golf round. These experienced caddies provide all the information you need, to navigate the course, especially the notoriously tricky greens. Trust me –listening to your caddie’s advice can make all the difference in mastering the greens and shooting a low score. So when the caddie tells you to barely tap that putt, trust me, it’s fast, especially if you’re above the hole on hole #1. And just when you think you read the slope correctly, here’s my advice; add another foot!

As you make your way around the course, you’ll be treated to breathtaking

views at every turn. The lush fairways and greens contrast beautifully against the rugged desert landscape, creating a striking oasis in the desert. From time to time after hitting your golf shot, make sure you look behind you at the tee boxes that look like they are floating in the sky. But, don’t let the scenic views distract you from the task at hand –keeping your ball in play is crucial, as straying into the rocky desert can spell trouble for your scorecard. And if you’re anything like me, who likes to gamble on the golf course, I don’t like losing especially in Vegas!

Downswing Sequence

The change of direction from backswing to downswing is the most critical move in the golf swing motion or the “Holy Grail” to great ball striking. When you watch the best players, you can’t help but marvel at the beauty of their tempo, rhythm, balance, or delayed look in their swings. Imagine yourself in the seat of a swing set and you are flowing back and forth. That pause or stall on both sides when you get to the top is slow and smooth but as the momentum builds, there is a big swoosh at the bottom of the arc. Your golf swing should feel the same way. The seat is the club, the links are your body parts, and the bar is the ground. In all stick sports, baseball, tennis, hockey, and golf, the proper sequence starts from the ground; the dog wags the tail!

The most common mistakes are made from misuse of the body, lack of understanding, or just over trying. The body lunging forward to shift the weight, overturning or twisting at the hips and

shoulders, or uncocking the wrists too early all wreak havoc on ball flight. The transition should have just a few sensations that get you moving in the proper sequence. Here are a few:

• A slight pause at the top – be patient!

• A subtle feel of the front foot grabbing the ground

• The forward knee moves slightly toward the target

• Small bump of the lead hip

Remember, regardless of your feel, it is slow and subtle. Many great players felt that their hands and arms just moved down from gravity because their lower body moves naturally in the right way with no thought or effort. Others felt the right elbow drop, like skipping a rock on the lake or hitting a topspin forehand. The bottom line is, if you struggle with a smooth effortless transition at the start of your downswing, you’re out of sequence. The good news is… you can change it with understanding, visualization, sensations of feel and a little hard work. One last tip, don’t rush it… The ball will be there when you get to it.

A Relentless Approach

Martin Chuck’s passion for helping players get better has helped him create an empire of instruction and training aids

he secret to Martin Chuck’s success can be traced back to his childhood days, attending George Knudson’s junior golf camps just north of Toronto. Growing up in Scarborough, Martin and his friends were dropped off every day during summers in Woodbridge, where Knudson taught.

“We basically went there from sunup to sundown, recalls Chuck, now 55 and one of golf’s top instructors and coaches. “When the sun went down, I was mad.”

Chuck would later work for Knudson when the legendary player and coach opened up his own private driving range, and credits Knudson and another Canadian legend, Moe Norman, for shaping his extraordinary golf career. Chuck was recently named the seventh best teacher in the country and the tops among Arizona teaching pros in Arizona by Golf Digest.

But he’s so much more than a golf instructor. While he still teaches private lessons and heads up his nationally renown Tour Striker Golf Academy at Raven Golf Club in Phoenix, he’s also been one of the most successful developers and purveyors of training aids in the world. A PGA Master Professional, he has sold hundreds of thousands of the namesake Tour Striker 7-iron – which encourages shaft lean at impact – and the Smart Ball, which can be used in a variety of ways.

Chuck also has an online instruction program on TourStrikerGolfAcademy.com, and is one of the featured instructors for Performance Golf, which also counts David Leadbetter, Eric Cogorno, and Nick Faldo among its headliners. You’ll also find him on the Golf Channel’s GolfPass, addressing his followers as Tour Striker Nation. Chuck’s enthusiasm not only hasn’t waned since those junior golf days; he might even be more passionate now.

“Between products and coaching golf schools, it’s been a really nice living, more than I deserve,” says Chuck, whose students run the gamut of abilities, including fellow Canadian Nick Taylor, a four-time winner on

the PGA Tour, culminating with this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. “The moral is if you really love something and keep doing what you love, somehow you will find a way to make it.”

When you ask Chuck about Knudson and Norman, he’s all too happy to share his experiences with them. Knudson is considered one of the greatest talents ever to come out of Canada. He won eight tournaments on the PGA Tour, a record for Canadian golfers shared by Mike Weir, who won the Masters in 2003. Ironically, Weir and Chuck are good friends, and grew up competing against each other in junior golf. Knudson, who died in 1989, was known for his “Million Dollar Golf Swing,” which was chronicled in a 2022 documentary by the same name.

Norman was a little different than most. He had a unique motion and setup, but has

long been regarded as one of the best ball strikers and most accurate players of all time. While he was never formally diagnosed, many believe he was sort of a golf savant, perhaps spurred by a childhood head injury. He wasn’t comfortable around people for most of his life, but set many records on the Canadian Tour.

Chuck recalls that Knudson loved to practice more than he liked playing. And Norman said things to Chuck back in the day that didn’t make any sense at the time, but do now. He called Norman’s ability to have the face so stable through impact in the same position every time “freakish”. And he learned why Norman said he hit the ball with his right shoulder. It was because his right arm and right wrist were so bent back coming into impact.

“Moe was unbelievable. George Knudson was amazing,” says Chuck, who also credits the legendary pro, Bill Eschenbrenner, who mentored him when he was an intern at El Paso Country Club.

Martin, who played college golf at New Mexico State University, competed on the Canadian Tour for a few years. One day when he was working an offseason job in the Palm Springs area, he was offered a head pro job at Indian Ridge Country Club. He was just 26 years old. That altered his path.

“It was an incredible honor,” he says, “and a quick footstep into the business.”

And while being a regular club pro wasn’t exactly what he wanted to do, it did set him up for his ultimate passion – helping others improve.

As for the training aid part of his business, it really started when he was 16 years old, when he tried to develop a more portable version of the popular warmup tool, the swing fan. But it wasn’t until he was 40 that he came up with the Tour Striker, a club that has a head on it where the face doesn’t go all the way to the bottom. The design basically forces anyone who uses it to hit with a descending blow and shaft lean the way better players do.

A few years later, he invented the Smart Ball, which, among other things, helps golfers understand how to keep the arms in sync with the body during the golf swing.

These are just a couple of examples of the 20 or so training aids available on the Tour Striker website, and he’s always developing more. A new one, called the Sleeve, is set to be introduced this spring.

Of course, the best experience for a golfer to improve is undoubtedly to attend one of Chuck’s golf schools. And despite the cost (around $6,000 for three full days), Chuck is honest with his students. “My job is to be truthful with you. You’ll appreciate the fact that you’re paying me not to be nice. I won’t be an ass, but I’m going to tell it like it is. We’re going to work on it, and I’m going to challenge you to get better.”

His best advice to golfers who want to get better? If you’re not attending one of his schools, find a pro in your area who has a track record of success making golfers better. And get your grip right before anything else.

“I joke with people that my school’s not cheap, but if you leave here with a great grip, you win,” Chuck says. “Not other pixie dust magic. I’m going to show you how to grip it well, and if you can, you can actually do the rest of the fun stuff.”

Also of note is that everything in Chuck’s portfolio is branded Tour Striker. He doesn’t name any of it after himself.

“I want it to live beyond Martin Chuck,” he says. “Whether it’s through other coaches or my family or somebody buys it. It’s never the Martin Chuck academy. It’s the Tour Striker Golf Academy. Because we’re only here for a short time, man... I hope a hundred years from now there’s a dusty old Tour Striker iron in the corner of somebody’s garage.”
