You’ve Got Style
STORY BY SCOTT LAIRD
If there’s a word that best describes Miami, it’s probably “vibrant”. The brilliant colors of South Florida are on display here—the brilliant azure blue of the inland waterways and the deep sapphire of the Atlantic Ocean, the deep greens of the tropical botanical life and the soothing pastels of the art deco buildings in South Miami Beach. It’s a palette that draws on multiple inspirations—Florida coastal fun dappled with Caribbean soul.
he energy here is frenetic, one that seems to simultaneously pull visitors to languid beaches or sceney pool decks or entice them into chic eateries, art galleries, or nightclubs until the wee hours. It’s populated with gohard vacationers, weekend trippers, and just-one-night-beforethe-cruise transiters.
But there’s a lot to explore, all around Greater Miami, whether your flavor preferences skew toward South Beach of Little Havana—or better yet, both.
For lodging, there’s no shortage of luscious city hotels and beachfront resorts. For city fun, the Mandarin Oriental Miami on Brickell Key is right in the heart of the city’s main attractions, but separated from the urban hustle by a narrow channel. It’s island vibes with the city still at your feet. Rooms have soaking tubs and Asian design elements, plus wraparound views of the cityscape or the endless blue of Biscayne Bay, and water’s edge dining at the Peruvian hot spot La Mar by Gastón Acurio.
The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach is an exercise in contrasts as guests depart the bright Florida sunshine and white midcentury façade into the rich, darker features of the lobby, with throwback art deco design features and richly accented public spaces. In guest rooms, it’s back to bright white, with the surf, sand, and sun flooding the bright, airy guestrooms.
Truly indulgent guests book Club rooms for access to the top-floor Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge with five food and beverage presentations prepared daily by José Andres Group.
Ritz-Carlton
For the quintessential South Beach experience, visitors might also try Loews Miami Beach Hotel conveniently located just steps away from Ocean Drive’s historic district. The hotel also combines the best of the Miami Beach experience, with a wide stretch beach with beach lounge chairs available for guests, or an expansive pool deck with cabanas and day beds available for those whose oceanside visits trend more toward lounge than frolic.
Ocean Drive itself is a top attraction for South Beach visitors, with the iconic row of pastel art deco buildings making this stretch of beach park unmistakably Miami, appearing in films ranging from The Birdcage, There’s Something About Mary, and the TV series Miami Vice. Fans of the Amazon Prime series will also recognize the historic Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel from recent episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a historic property that
was also featured in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger.
The vintage art deco buildings here today generally house boutique hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs, but for those who are particularly keen on the history of art deco on Ocean Drive, there’s a 90-minute Art Deco Walking Tour given by docents from the Miami Design Preservation League that kicks off from in front of the Art Deco Welcome Center. The tour gives insightful history, such as the early development of Miami Beach as a vacation attraction for the middle class in the early 20th century, decline and redevelopment in the latter half of the century as preservationists worked to maintain the distinctive design elements of the neighborhood.
And there are restaurants to be enjoyed in these historic buildings. Dine al fresco at Café Americano at Hotel Victor, taking advantage

of an expansive Latin-inspired breakfast or brunch menu (nobody bats an eye if you order a breakfast cocktail to go with your cafecito first thing in the morning).
Or pick up an international newspaper at News Café, a favorite of Gianni Versace—and it’s not difficult to see why, with spectacular views (the people-watching is second to none), solid standard café fare served quickly and reasonably priced for an oceanfront spot. News Café was instrumental in the resurgence of interest in Miami Beach in the 1990s when it was ascendant as a modern tourism hot spot.
For evening eats, try DOYA in the artsy Wynwood neighborhood, which focuses on mezze-style dining from Greece and Turkey. Most of the shareable starters and main dishes are grilled over wood or coal, giving delightfully smokey flavors to marinated meats, veg-
etables or fish. A lot of love goes into the food here—bread made in-house is started two days before it’s ultimately served. Don’t skip the roasted eggplant mezze as a starter.
Before or after a satisfying mezze feast, Wynwood is the city’s center for street art, where it’s seen as more than simple graffiti— it’s a culture unto itself. Drop into Wynwood Buggies for an exclusive tour of the street art— oftentimes with an artist who is themselves ensconced in the local street art scene (they may even add some to an obliging wall while you watch). Learn about the social customs of the street art world, and about the artists and their signature looks or marks that they leave behind to sign their art, as well as many of the stories about street art in the neighborhood.
For a more tranquil experience, stop into Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This ocean

front hideaway in the Coconut Grove neighborhood was built in 1916 by farm equipment magnate James Deering. Today, the property is owned by the city of Miami and the gardens are open to the public. Take a stroll through the extensive, curated gardens and learn about the history of the estate, including the Gatsby-esque parties that used to take place in the villa or on the stone dock that guests would reach by Venetian-style gondola, or peek into the inner workings of the house itself, almost reminiscent of California’s Hearst Castle.
Nearby, check out Little Havana, a cultural marker for the city which is so much inspired by its large Cuban population—many of whom fled Cuba following the Cuban Revolution. So many of them settled right here in this neighborhood, which today is more pan-Latin than specifically Cuban, although it retains its distinctively Cuban heritage. Miami Culinary Tours offers tours of the neighborhood, offering samples of empanadas, cafecito (Cuban-style coffee), the “true” Cuban sandwich at Ball & Chain (which is also a popular spot for live music), and light, just-fried churros.
Another art stop in Miami can be had at Pérez Art Museum Miami where you’ll find art both inside and outside the distinctively structure perched right on Biscayne Bay. Many of the works showcase the ethnic richness of the city of Miami itself, in addition to art communities in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. The Museum’s café, Verde, is a waterfront bar and restaurant that feels decidedly unmuseum like in fare—think fried zucchini blossoms, grilled fish tacos, and inventive pizzas among other delights.
Miami is a city unlike any other—a crossroads between North America and Latin America, but a collector of global vibes and influence. Parts of the city feel distinctly American, but the undertones skew heavily international, with a mix of cuisines, art, and architecture from the Mediterranean, from Asia, from Europe— all combining into an intoxicating cocktail with a conveniently gorgeous backdrop of fantastical weather and an ever-present, cooling ocean breeze.

Avoiding the Holiday Pitfalls: Fitness Tips for Navigating Seasonal Temptations
STORY BY ANON GUILLORY
The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and, let’s face it, some serious temptations. But here’s the good news: staying on track with your fitness goals doesn’t mean you have to skip the pie or say no to a second helping of mashed potatoes. It’s all about balance and moderation.
First, give yourself permission to indulge—within reason. The key is not what you eat, but how much and how often. Enjoy your holiday favorites, but be mindful of portion sizes. A good rule of thumb? Start with smaller portions and savor every bite. This way, you can enjoy the flavors of the season without going overboard.
Second, stay active in ways that fit the holiday spirit. Maybe it’s a brisk morning walk before festivities begin, or a friendly game of touch football with family. Even short bursts of movement can make a difference. You don’t have to stick to your usual routine to keep the momentum going—just keep moving.
If you’re traveling and don’t have access to your usual gym, get creative! Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active, whether you’re exploring a new city or taking a stroll through the neighborhood. If you prefer something more structured, try bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, or planks. You can do these anywhere, whether you’re in a hotel room or at a relative’s house. The goal is to stay consistent without stressing about it.
Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if you slip. Miss a workout? No big deal. Had one too many slices of pie? It happens. The trick is not to let one day throw off your entire mindset. You’re building a lifestyle, not aiming for perfection.
By practicing moderation, staying active, and keeping a positive attitude, you’ll come out of the holiday season feeling strong and ready to tackle your fitness goals in the new year.
Investment Strategies for 2025: Preparing
STORY BY MONA WALKER
As 2024 draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your financial strategy and ensure your portfolio is ready for the year ahead. The past year’s market fluctuations may have caused some uncertainty, but with careful planning, you can set yourself up for success in 2025.
Start by reviewing your current asset allocation.
Diversification is key, especially in unpredictable markets. Make sure your investments are spread across a range of asset classes—such as stocks, bonds, real estate, and alternatives like commodities or private equity. The goal is to minimize risk while maximizing potential growth. If your portfo-
lio has become too heavily weighted in one area, consider rebalancing to align with your long-term goals.
Emerging trends for 2025 also offer potential opportunities. Sectors such as technology, renewable energy, and healthcare are expected to continue growing due to advancements in innovation and societal needs. However, it’s essential not to chase trends without understanding your risk tolerance and investment horizon. Choose sectors that not only have potential but also align with your personal financial objectives. This is where a financial advisor can provide valuable insights tailored to your situation.
Don’t overlook the importance of tax efficiency in your investment strategy. As the year wraps up, now is the time to take advantage of tax-loss harvesting to offset gains or to contribute to tax-advantaged accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s. This could not only reduce your tax burden but also enhance your long-term returns.
Finally, approach the new year with a mindset of patience and discipline. The markets may be volatile, but maintaining a balanced, diversified portfolio and focusing on your long-term goals will help you weather any short-term fluctuations. By making these strategic adjustments now, you’ll be well-positioned for a successful 2025.

Cadillac has taken the beloved Escalade nameplate to new heights, crafting an all-electric SUV that is as stunning as it is efficient. From the moment you step into the Escalade IQ, you’re wrapped in a world of refined details that redefine what an SUV can be.
Let’s talk about the jaw-dropping design first. The exterior is a harmonious balance of sleek lines and aggressive accents that give the Escalade IQ a presence like no other. It’s the sort of SUV that demands attention whether it’s parked or in motion. The 24-inch wheels, high-gloss black grille, and LED light show every time you approach? Simply put, this vehicle is a showstopper.
Inside, the Escalade IQ doesn’t just meet expectations; it obliterates them. Cadillac has outfitted the cabin with premium materials that make every ride a luxurious experience. The ultra-plush seating and panoramic roof enhance the interior’s sense of openness, while the 55-inch curved OLED display delivers a visual feast, with crisp graphics and intuitive controls at your fingertips. Whether you’re the driver or a passenger, it’s clear Cadillac prioritized both comfort and innovation.
The performance is just as thrilling. With a dual-motor setup and up to 750 horsepower, the Escalade IQ zips from 0-60 mph in under five seconds, a feat for a full-size SUV! Plus, its range of approximately 450 miles per charge makes it practical for both city drives and road trips. The innovative Regen on Demand system lets you customize your regenerative braking level, allowing for a smoother, more controlled drive.
What truly sets the 2025 Escalade IQ apart, though, is its versatility. With hands-free Super Cruise, an adaptive air suspension, and exceptional towing capabilities, Cadillac crafted an electric SUV that doesn’t sacrifice utility for luxury. The 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ is a thrilling blend of power, luxury, and sustainability, perfectly suited for drivers who want it all efficiency, elegance, and excitement. This is the future of driving, and Cadillac has set a new standard. The starting sticker price is $129,990. If you are ready to book a test drive, the 2025 Escalade IQ hits dealership showrooms late 2024.

Slated to debut at the Cosmopolitan in early 2025, Michelin-starred chef Jason McLeod will lead the kitchen at Amaya Modern Mexican
as Vegas diners will have a new Mexican restaurant to look forward to in 2025: Amaya Modern Mexican is scheduled to make its debut at the hip Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas hotel. Michelin-starred chef Jason McLeod will lead the kitchen at this new restaurant that’s slat- ed to open its doors in January of 2025.
“Be - fore moving to Las Vegas, I was immersed in San Diego’s vibrant food culture, where Mexico’s influence is found throughout the region,” says McLeod. “There is tremendous excitement in Mexico’s growing culinary scene - it’s exploding with creativity and energy, rivaling any culinary destination in the world. Through Amaya, we are capturing the lively, carefree vibe of Tulum and the thrill of Mexico’s evolving, cutting-edge cuisine.”
McLeod has an impressive background. He’s worked at a plethora of high-end hotels, including many Four Seasons Resorts all over the world. This includes the storied luxury brand’s Costa Rica, Miami, Whistler in Canada and Great Exuma in the Bahamas properties. He earned two prestigious Michelin stars in 2010 where he was working as the executive chef of Ria at The Elysian Hotel in Chicago. After his stints at numerous fine hotels, he landed at
San-Deigo CH-Projects. The company has nearly 20 concepts in Southern California. This includes a diverse set of restaurants like the ramen and craft beer bar, Underbelly; American cuisine restaurant, Fortunate Son; high-end steak and cocktail spot, Born & Raised. He worked for the San Diego company for over 10 years. Following this job, he left San Diego for Las Vegas in 2022.
As Amaya’s full name—Amaya Modern Mexican—suggests, diners can anticipate plenty of modern Mexican fare. The cuisine is intended to take customers on a journey.
“We want every guest to escape the chaos of the Las Vegas Strip and be transported to the beautiful beach town of Tulum,” says McLeod.
What does this mean, food-wise? Well, specifically, guests can order a 2-pound whole lobster that’s paired with a chili lobster cream sauce and drizzled with lime. Another inventive menu offering is the birria short rib. The ribs are slow-cooked and served with corn puree, pickled onion and cotija cheese. One show-stopping option is the expansive and sizzling fajita board.
The menu we were given as of press time is a mix of appetizers, soups, salads, ceviches, steaks, entrees and family-style sides like Mexican street corn, frijoles and Spanish rice. The especiales de le casa menu features a mix of higher-end foods alongside classic casual Mexican stapes like tacos. One great example of a hig-end option is the decadent butter poached lobster. This plate will feature Maine lobster, chipotle aioli for a nice spicy kick, cabbage, onion, avocado and tomatillo salsa for a hot finish. More familiar offerings include the carne asada tacos, tuna tostada, fire roasted shrimp tacos, crispy avocado tacos and an indulgent surf & turf burrito stuffed with shrimp, carne asada, charro beans, cilantro rice and fire roasted salsa. A few other items also caught our eye. We can’t wait to try the charred octopus, queso fundido and oysters Oaxacafeller. Expect oysters topped with a mix of poblano pepper, cilantro, scallions, lime, cotija cheese and bread crumbs for an added crunch. Being a Mexican restaurant, customers can expect a fine selection of tequilas. A catador or tequila expert will oversee the selection of aged tequilas and smoky mezcals. Diners can look forward to craft cocktails made with the clear spirit. For instance, The Flor de Paloma, features a blend of reposado tequila, pink grapefruit, lime, and agave syrup. The libation is topped with hibiscus foam and delicate edible flowers for some added color. The Fuego @Volcán is a mixture of mezcal, passion fruit and blood orange, with a hint of ancho chili syrup and a spicy Tajín rim for a bold, truly Mexican taste.
Located on the second floor of The Strip hotel, the 7,180-square-foot restaurant will feature a dining room, a bar and a lounge. The design is intended to transport diners to the Yucatan Peninsula. According to a press release, the décor will be a blend of “rustic elegance and lush tropics.” Peter Max Bowden and his team at Petermax Co. led the design work. His portfolio includes celebrated restaurants like Wren & Wolf in downtown Phoenix, Tan in New York City and Javier’s with locations scattered throughout the country, among others.
We had to ask the chef about how he intends to stand out at a property packed with stellar restaurants.
“Amaya fits the hip vibe of The Cosmopolitan, perfectly. It’s all about capturing that vibrant Tulum spirit, where dinner becomes a celebration,” he says. “There is and has never been anything like it at The Cosmopolitan, and we look forward to enhancing their incredible portfolio of bars and restaurants.”

Winter Golf Like a Pro: Stay Warm and Ready on the Range Essential Tips to Stay Warm and Focused on the Range
STORY BY ALEJANDRA AGUILAR
Practicing on the range during the winter doesn’t have to be a bone-chilling experience—it can be the perfect opportunity to refine your game if you’re prepared! The trick is all about layering smartly. Start with a good base layer, throw on a thermal top, and finish with a jacket or pullover. As you get swinging and start feeling the heat, you can easily shed a layer or two to stay comfortable.
Cold hands? No problem. Pick up some winter golf gloves that are warm but not too thick— bulky gloves can mess with your grip. And here’s a pro tip: check with the pro-shop for hand warmers, or order a pack on Amazon and stash them in your pockets. Warm hands mean more controlled swings!
Don’t forget about protecting your ears. A simple headband or earmuffs can make a world of difference in keeping you comfortable on a chilly day. You’d be surprised how much warmth you retain by covering your ears.
Now, if you’re venturing out onto the course, take your comfort up a notch. A golf cart heater combined with a cart cover can turn a cold, below-55-degree day into a surprisingly warm ride. You’ll be the only one sweating while others are shivering!
With these simple adjustments, practicing and playing golf in the winter can be a rewarding experience rather than a cold struggle. Get layered up, pack your essentials, and you’re ready to hit the range and the course with confidence!

The Fall Course: A Memory in Every Swing
STORY BY ANONYMOUS
It’s a strange thing, memory. A thought, a smell, a sound can transport you back to a moment, a time when everything felt right—when the leaves were at the perfect hue of orange and red, the air crisp enough to make your breath visible but not enough to bite at your skin. The best days on the course often came in the fall, as the weather turned cool, the crowds thinned, and the greens were as hard and fast as the stakes in the business deals that so often played out beneath the towering trees and rolling hills.
For me, the fall was always something special. It was the season I spent with her. It wasn’t because we had more time; it was because we made time. We made it for golf, just the two of
us. And as much as golf was something I came to love, it was in those autumn months—where the chill in the air matched the bittersweet quiet in our relationship—that golf truly became the language we spoke. It was our bridge.
My mother was an exceptional golfer. Not in the way of her trophies—though there were plenty of those—but in the quiet grace with which she played. She carried herself with the kind of confidence only someone who had spent decades on the course could. And though I tried to match her every swing, I never could. Not quite. She had a way of knowing exactly where the ball would go, how the wind would affect its flight, how the greens would respond. She wasn’t just playing a game; she
was engaging in a conversation with the course, and everyone around her was simply invited to listen.
The fall rounds were the best ones.
You learn a lot about someone by the way they play golf. You learn about patience, strategy, grace under pressure. But most of all, you learn about who they are—deep down, away from the world’s noise. My mother and I shared many rounds, but the ones in the fall stand out more than any others.
My father and she had split when I was younger—my childhood fractured, and it was during those times that the custody of the children was handed off like pieces of an inheritance. But the fall, that was always ours. It was a strange thing, finding solace in something as competitive as golf, but there was something about the course in the autumn that made everything feel softer. It was almost as though the sharpness of life—the kind that had cut through our family—was blurred by the fading sun and the cool breeze.
The air smelled of dried leaves and fresh-cut grass. The sound of a driver hitting the ball was sharper in the cool weather. Each swing, each putt, felt like a statement, a connection to something larger
than ourselves. And there was always a certain joy in hitting a clean shot with cold hands, knowing the ball might not fly quite as far, but the satisfaction was in knowing you adjusted for the conditions.
My mother had played through college, used golf as a vehicle for business. She understood that the course was not just for leisure; it was a space for connection, negotiation, and quiet victories. She was a woman of quiet power, and golf was her conversation. She would pull off shots that most would deem impossible, always with a soft smile and an even softer chuckle when I would miss one of those shots. She was patient with me, and in her patience, I became a better player. But there was always that slight edge she had, the strokes she would give me, yet somehow still manage to pull off a better score.
It was never about the score, though. It was always about being together, on the course, amid the changing leaves and the crisp air, just the two of us. Even now, when I step onto a green with the wind nipping at my heels and the autumn sun casting long shadows, I can’t help but think of those rounds with her, how everything seemed to slow down. Golf was our connection, and every fall brought us closer.
My mother is gone now. Time, with its cruel way of moving forward, has taken her from me, but it hasn’t taken the lessons she imparted, the quiet confidence with which she played the game, nor the autumn days we spent side by side. Those moments remain, frozen in time, tied to the sound of a well-hit ball and the feel of cool air on my face.
As much as I have come to accept her absence, there’s a part of me that still looks for her on the course, in the crisp fall air, in the way the ball feels as it comes off the clubface. I think, sometimes, that the game is our bridge—that no matter where she is now, she
is still out there, on the course, in every swing I take. She left me with more than just memories of the game. She left me with a legacy—a way of looking at the world through the eyes of someone who understood the beauty in patience, in practice, in connection.
And now, as I prepare for the arrival of my own child, I feel a stirring deep inside. In just a couple of months, I’ll be a father, and while I can’t predict the future or the kind of relationship we’ll have, I do know one thing. As soon as I can bundle them up, we’re going to the course. I’m going to take my child on the greens, just like my mother took me. We’ll spend those fall days together, just like she and I did. It won’t matter how cold the air gets, or how fast the greens are. It will be about the connection—the moments, the memories, and the joy of sharing something that’s bigger than both of us.
In that way, she’ll never truly be gone. She’ll live on in every swing I take, in every lesson I pass down. The game is still here, and with it, her legacy. And so, I carry it forward.
Las Vegas Paiute
I know it’s different for locals, but there’s no arguing that, for visiting guests, the Las Vegas Strip is the heartbeat of this destination city with never-ending attractions, adventures, and chances to make a varied and storied array of memories.
STORY BY MARC HALL
ven just now, a fast-flashing highlight reel of my own uniquely Vegas moments has started to play in my head. Like helping break up what would have been a nasty fracas between bawdy comedy quasi-legend Andrew “Dice” Clay and the wiry opening road comic who had just soundly outclassed the Dice Man on the stage. Being pelted by the projectile tears of a stranger, a young woman who was emotionally overwhelmed and entranced by the opportunity to hug a dolphin at the Siegfried and Roy Secret Garden zoo at The Mirage, also stands out. Then, there was an epic 36-minute run at the craps table that ended with an uncommonly fashionable young Armenian gentlemen grabbing my face in his hands, kissing my cheek and shouting, “Hot Hands, you just bought my girlfriend a new f---ing car!”
I had wagered significantly less, apparently. That night continued with witnessing a wheelchair-bound, cross-dressing dead-ringer for Fred “Rerun” Berry perform the most spinetinglingly brilliant karaoke version of Prince’s “Purple Rain” at the now long-gone dive, the Laughing Jackalope. I could go on (and on), but we’re here to talk golf, right?
Sometimes, though, the greatest Vegas memories are made when you venture from the strip and discover the region’s natural wonders. Those wonders are thankfully and graciously on full display at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort, the 54-hole oasis where Pete Dye fittingly carved out an unforgettable collection of thrilling risk/reward holes 25 minutes northwest of the flashing-neon risk/reward capital of the universe.
There first thing that stands out about the three golf courses at Paiute is that each hole, each vista and everything as far as the eye can see is undisturbed by houses or other manmade infrastructure. The serenity of the land and its surrounding pairs well with Dye’s Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and The Wolf courses, which each provide a challenging, finely manicure and always-engaging experience.
This is upscale daily-fee golf in a setting the feels like a private club or boutique resort with superb playing conditions and the world-class shot value Pete Dye-designed courses aways deliver.
It all began for Paiute in 1995 when the country’s first master-planned multi-course resort took shape on the Las Vegas Paiute Native American tribe’s land with the opening of the Snow Mountain course. Paiute’s original course stretches to 7,164 total yards from the tips. With generous rye grass fairways, seven holes with water hazards, a layout with no parallel fairways, this is a pure golfing journey. Featuring traditional Dye railroad tie-decorated bunkers and demanding dogleg finishing holes, some golfers still consider the original is the signature experience at Paiute. The 16th, a par 3, is a nervy tester of a par three with water down the left and fronting the edge of the green. The 18th, which flanks the impres-
sive 50,000-square foot clubhouse, provides a final chance for glory or humbling defeat with water hazard down the left side and daring you to take on the day’s final pin placement with a gutsy swing.
Sun Mountain, plays to a pleasing 7,112 total yards and is the tamest of the courses. A gentler more “in front of you” Dye design, Sun Mountain showcases natural rolling terrain and enchanting scenery thanks to elevations of 2,800 feet. Playing this course makes you feel on the edge of nature as you play away from the clubhouse and deeper into the desert. The wonderfully framed long uphill par-four 12th shows off a backdrop of the majestic Spring Mountains, indigenous desert landscape, and sloping landscapes that epitomizes the grandeur of this desert setting. This a fun, cerebral layout with no shortage of dogleg holes, carries over hardscrabble desert and tempting angles into the greens that beckon you to fire away at some pins.
The Wolf is Paiute’s newest and most-difficult layout, playing a daunting 7,604 yards from the back tees. In fact, it’s the longest course in Nevada. The WOLF delivers showstopping shot values along with the unfettered beauty of the surrounding desert. Everyone remembers the island-green 15th hole. Playing 182 from the tips, it’s a mega-sized version
of the famous 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass and every bit as nerve-rattling. Notably, Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb officially opened the course by competing in Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf and shot 65 and 64, respectively. Choose the proper set of tees when you take on The WOLF and you’re guaranteed a fun ride.
Ancestors of the Las Vegas Paiute tribe, the Tudinu (or Desert People) occupied the territory encompassing part of the Colorado River, most of southeastern Nevada and parts of both Southern California and Utah. Being on this land, you still get a sense of the wildness, the freedom and the sense of wonder that must have filled these intrepid natives.
Those of us who are passionate about golf have a cheat code of sorts. We learn how to gravitate to places like Paiute to escape the air-conditioned, spinning-ball distractions in the hearts of our cities and find a respite in nature. That being said, the 50,000-square-foot clubhouse at The Las Vegas Pauite Resort is full of great reasons to chill out inside for an extended while. The casual and fine din-
ing alone are worth the drive out to Paiute, but the cigar lounge takes things to the next level as does the array of options in the clubhouse’s pro shop which was twice been named “Best Pro Shop” by VegasGolfer Magazine. Relaxing, imbibing, and indulging were never better than with an alluring mountain view to take in as you reflect on the best shots of the day along with the ones that got away.
The Wolf is ranked among the Top 15 in Golf Digest’s List of Best Golf Courses in Nevada, while The Wolf, Sun Mountain and Snow Mountain rank 10th, 11th and 14th, respectively in Golfweek’s list of Best Public Courses in Nevada.
A subtlety of the playing experience at Las Vegas Paiute Resort is the excellent playing conditions derived from the use of rye grass, which reduces the need to overseed and facilitates top-tier turf interaction and playing conditions all year long.
It’s the attention to detail, the boldness of Dye’s design and the richness of the the overall setting that elevate this golf resort - which has Stay and Play options available through a host of MGM properties –to must-play status. Do a little research and plan a couple of days at this desert gem at LVPaiuteGolf. com.

Immerse yourself in meditation. Just you and the boundless blue horizon, where the endless sea merges into the sky, with not a speck that distracts you from your mind.
Sound good? Let’s go.
Good golfers understand that you learn what to practice from how you play. Start from the hole and move backwards. Putting is by far the most critical area in scoring and often the most neglected. If it’s not putting, how’s your up and down percentage? Scrambling around the green says volumes about your chipping, pitching and bunker play. What’s important here is to learn from your inability to score from the area that needs the most work.
Many golfers take lessons and expect immediate results. There is no magic dust or holy grail. If you really aspire to become a better golfer, you must be willing to practice consistently with a purpose. Remember, your poor shots come from a bad habit and fortunately habits can be changed. Many golfers hit a lot of range balls on the range and do not become better players. Every practice session should have a goal in mind.
Here are some guidelines:
• Master the basics
PURPOSE IN PRACTICE
• Make a commitment to becoming a better player
• Schedule time to practice and play
• Be realistic about how long it takes for lasting improvement
• Be willing to make changes in all areas of your game
• Believe in instruction and trust it
• Every swing on the range has a target
• Change your club and target often
• Only work on one thing at a time
• Practice only as long as you can stay focused
• Practice simulating on-course situations
• Have fun while you work – you will practice longer
Remember, train when you practice – Trust when you play.

What To Know Before Installing a Golf Simulator in Your Home
STORY BY CARL MICKELSON
As younger people, some of us dreamed of flying cars and rocket packs while those of us who could really envision a true utopian future pined for entire golf rounds without having to leave the house. Today, home golf simulators bring stunning realism to indoor golf with systems that make game improvement, family entertainment and multi-sport development the ultimate modern convenience. Companies like The Indoor Golf Shop (ShopIndoorGolf.com), the industry’s most trusted seller, distributor and even manufacturer of all the things you need to optimize the ultimate home golf room, are staying busy these days.
With the soaring popularity of indoor golf, it helps greatly that technology has quickly made the experience a lot more similar to playing outdoors and way more convenient. More and more
golfers than ever are installing golf simulators in their homes. If that’s you, there are several things to be aware of ahead of time, according to Rene Delgado, founder and CEO of The Indoor Golf Shop. If you’re not the DIY type, The Indoor Golf Shop can actually send professionals to your home and take care of everything startto-finish – with respect to measuring, installing and activating.
“One of the most common questions we get is about ceiling height,” says Delgado. “Sometimes people have nine- or 9.5-foot ceilings and ask if they can swing in this area. There’s no one-sizefits-all answer. People have different swing types and heights. So, we ask them to swing a club slowly to ascertain whether or not it’s possible.”
In fact, the overall dimensions of your poten-
tial sim room are key. Even though your room may seem wide and deep enough, remember that a sim is part of a larger enclosure that needs to fit in that space. So you may need more space than you think. Too small and you may not be able to swing the club properly.
Then there are the components to avoid skimping on. The hitting surface, for instance, needs to be durable and have good padding underneath. A typical driving range mat with little padding can be very violent on the joints. “You want to get something realistic, that has a fairway feel but is also forgiving and allows you to swing down and through effortlessly,” says Delgado.
Next, give careful thought to the launch monitor – the computer that measures your swing and allows you to play the likes of Pebble Beach in your home. If you’re looking to hit balls indoors only, consider a ceiling mounted unit that’s off the floor and out of the way. It accommodates both left- and right-handed golfers. If you’re only going to have a right-handed or left-handed golfer hitting balls in your sim, then opt for a floor-based photometric (camera) unit because you won’t have to move it like you would if you had both lefties and righties. And if you need portability and want to sometimes take the launch monitor outside to hit balls, then a Doppler-based (radar) unit might be the way to go.
Finally, take into account the projector. Delgado says if customers have any buyer’s remorse after installing a sim, it’s usually that they should’ve gone with a better projector. “You don’t have to spend a ton of money on them, either,” he says. “Switching from an $800 projector to a $2,000 projector is a night-and-day improvement with a lot more lumens, pixels per frame, and overall flexibility. A lot of customers come back later on and upgrade their projector.”
While this may all seem daunting, it’s really not – insists Delgado. “A lot of people are intimidated by the process and think it’s going to be overly complicated,” he says. “But at least with our simulator box-type solutions, everything we manufacture and design is meant to be set up and installed by a customer in under an hour. Our enclosures, our frames, are push-button connect, color coded, and very simple to put together. You can put it up within
20 minutes. One person can do it. We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for customers to do it on their own.” And whichever company you choose to buy components from, make sure they have a support team that can help walk you through each installation step over the phone. Some can even remotely connect to your computer and calibrate the system.
Of course, you can always opt to have someone handle the entire project – at a price. “If we fly a team out to build your custom unit, then it’s a much higher-end product,” says Delgado. “Those jobs typically run $35,000 to $60,000. It’s a built in-solution where we design the setup for your specific space. We’re building the frame into the wall, integrated subfloor, everything. We design everything, show you everything in 2-D and 3-D renderings, and then you sign off. We custom manufacture everything, and then we fly out a team to do the installation.”

The 18th hole at Bear’s Best
STORY BY J. TAKAHASHI
The 18th hole at Bear’s Best Las Vegas is a challenging 463-yard par-4, modeled after the 18th hole at PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, California. This demanding finishing hole features a large pond that guards the entire right side of the fairway and
extends up to the right side of the green, making accuracy off the tee and on the approach shot crucial. The green is elevated and well-bunkered, requiring a precise second shot to avoid the water and sand hazards. This hole offers a formidable test to conclude your round.
Champagne: Uncorking the Stories Behind the Bubbles
There’s something completely captivating about the sound of a champagne cork popping out of the bottle. A gentle sigh that signals celebration is at hand. I personally have always found that moment to be one of life’s simplest yet best pleasures. Maybe it’s because I am a sommelier. Maybe it’s the anticipation of that first sip. Maybe it’s the way the bubbles catch the light in the glass, but one thing is for sure, champagne has a way of turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Champagne, of course, is more than just the best version of sparkling wine. It’s a blend of art and science, tradition and innovation. The region’s unique climate, with its cool temperatures and chalky soils, provides the perfect conditions (or terroir if you will) for the three main grape varieties used in champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Each of these three grapes brings its own personality to the mix. Chardonnay brings elegance and freshness. Pinot Noir contributes strength and depth. Pinot Meunier offers fruitiness and roundness.
One of the things that fascinates me most about champagne is the méthode champenoise, the traditional method of production. It’s a painstakingly long process that involves a secondary fermentation right in the bottle. This, my friends, is where the magic happens; the bubbles are born, and the wine develops its complex flavors. Champagne is a labor of love that requires patience and attention to detail, qualities that are becoming rare in our fast-paced world. There are so many styles of champagne to explore, if you have the budget. Take a Blanc de Blancs: made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. It’s light, crisp, and has this wonderful citrus note and salinity that makes it perfect for starting an evening. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s Blanc de Noirs, crafted from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It’s much richer, with hints of red fruit and a fuller body. Both are exceptional, offering different experiences depending on your mood or the occasion.
I would be amiss if I did not talk about vintage cham-
pagnes. These are produced only in the best years when the harvest is exceptional, and stand as king of the champagne world. They’re aged longer and have deeper, more nuanced flavors: think toasted nuts, honey, and sometimes a touch of spice. Opening a bottle of vintage champagne feels like opening a time capsule and signifies a lovely evening. It’s a snapshot of a particular year, with all its unique characteristics captured in the wine.
In recent years, I’ve noticed a growing appreciation for grower champagnes in modern day consumers. These are champagnes produced by the same people who grow the grapes, which is becoming more rare as land sells. There’s something profoundly intimate about them, a personal touch that you don’t always get with the larger houses. They often showcase the specific terroir of their vineyards, offering flavors that are as diverse as the region itself.
Pairing champagne with food is an adventure I highly recommend. While it’s classic with oysters or caviar, don’t be afraid to try it with fried chicken or sushi. The acidity and effervescence cut through richness and cleanse the palate, making it surprisingly versatile. One of my personal favorites is pairing a rosé champagne with berry-infused desserts—the flavors just sing together.
At its heart, champagne is about joy and connection. It’s been there in my life for countless toasts—to new jobs, birthdays, anniversaries, and sometimes just because the sun was setting beautifully on a Tuesday. It’s a reminder to celebrate not just the big moments, but the small ones too. So next time you find yourself reaching for a bottle, take a moment to appreciate all that went into it—the history, the craftsmanship, the passion. Pour yourself a glass, watch those tiny bubbles rise, and let yourself be part of the story that started in the vineyards of Champagne and continues with each sip you take.
Here’s to embracing life’s sparkling moments, one glass at a time.
Rare and Limited-Edition Cigars: Are They Worth the Hype?
STORY BY TOMAS ZILINSKIS
Rare and limitededition cigars have an undeniable allure, sparking excitement among aficionados the moment they’re announced. Produced in small batches with the finest tobacco, these cigars often come with exclusive blends and luxurious packaging, making them highly coveted. But one question remains: Are these rare cigars truly worth the hype?
The allure of limited-edition cigars lies in their exclusivity. Produced in small quantities—sometimes only a few hundred— the rarity makes them an irresistible find for collectors. For enthusiasts, it’s not just about smoking a premium cigar but owning a piece of craftsmanship that few others have. Brands like Arturo Fuente’s Opus X, Davidoff, and Padron’s Anniversary Series have built their reputations around these coveted releases. These exclusive blends offer a chance to experience
tobacco at its finest, with the added thrill of scarcity.
However, with exclusivity comes a higher price. While some rare cigars, such as Davidoff Year of the Tiger or Padron 50th Anniversary, offer complex and refined flavors, others may not be vastly different from regular cigars. Often, the premium price is driven more by the story—the rare tobacco, the renowned blender, or the exclusivity—than a significant difference in taste.
For many cigar lovers, it’s the attention to detail that makes limited-edition cigars special. From the selection of aged tobacco to the intricate packaging, every aspect is handled with care. Some blends feature rare tobaccos, offering something distinct. For example, Fuente Fuente Opus X is known for its unique Dominican wrapper, while Cohiba Behike uses a rare blend that’s nearly impossible to replicate. The aging process also plays a role, with many of these cigars aged for extended periods, developing richer flavors.
Beyond the smoking experience, limited-edition cigars are prized by collectors. Brands like Cohiba and Montecristo re-
lease cigars that can appreciate in value over time, making them investment pieces. The packaging— often with numbered bands or certificates of authenticity—adds to their collectible appeal, turning each cigar into a work of art.
So, are these cigars worth the investment? It depends on the smoker. If you’re driven by the thrill of exclusivity and unique blends, then limited-edition cigars from brands like Padron, Davidoff, or Arturo Fuente may be worth the splurge. But if you’re simply looking for a great smoke, there are plenty of regular production cigars like those from Oliva Serie V that offer exceptional quality without the premium price.
Ultimately, rare cigars are more than just a smoke—they represent the artistry and tradition of the craft. For those who crave the excitement of discovering a rare gem, they offer a truly special experience.
