Jade Horrobin and Ashan Naumann met at university. “After meeting at a university event back in 2015 (more specifically, a lab coat pub crawl for the UQ Science Society) that was organised by Ashan (as the incumbent president for said society), it became obvious very quickly that our chemistry was contagious. We met up every day for months, under the guise of ‘studying together’ before officially updating our relationship status and making it official after my 21st birthday, when a photo was published to Facebook that very much accidentally looked like a wedding photo!”

“Ashan proposed at sunset on the beach at Kingscliff. After a romantic walk on the beach, which included Ashan crooning old school jazz songs into my ear and dancing on the sand, he got down on one knee, completely forgot his entire prepared speech and said, ‘Would you like to marry me?’, to which I just nodded through my sobbing tears.”

“Our ceremony was so romantic, and perfectly us. Restructuring it to suit us, we moved our wedding certificate signing to during cocktail hour, so we could have our movie moment and run down the aisle as soon as our Celebrant announced, ‘You may kiss the bride’. We were able to dance our way down the aisle and run straight up to our cocktail hour area - champagne and oysters (from the freshly-shucked oyster bar) in hand within 60 seconds of being married!”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to carefully consider the flow of the day. This is something our guests still haven’t stopped raving about. Take the time to pull apart your timeline and think about the actual reality of the experience for yourself and your guests. Is it clear to your guests where to go as soon as the ceremony finishes? How long could guests be standing around in the sun without a drink in their hand? Have you scheduled time into the day to take a moment away from the reception with your spouse to soak it all in? Tap into the entertainer in you - after all, this is the biggest party you’re ever going to throw.”

Our first dance was something that meant so much to us. As Ashan’s mother was a ballroom dancer for most of her life, she worked with BeLeste Dance on a dramatic choreographed routine. Lester from BeLeste is my mother-in-law’s first dance partner, which made it all the more special. We performed our dance as soon as we entered the reception, which set the tone for a spectacular night of dancing and frivolity.
