Brodie Barker met Harry Symes through Harry’s best mate. “Hugh introduced us at the house they were renting in Lutwyche. Funnily enough, we are now living in the next street. Sentimental that our first home together is 50 metres from where it all started. My first impression of Harry was that he was loud, had big blue eyes and threw a lot of chat at me! He made me laugh, very, very hard. Our first date was terrible! Harry was going to take me to Longtime (which was a new trendy restaurant in Brisbane at the time). He didn’t make a reservation and it was fully booked. Instead, he took me to another restaurant in Rosalie and I got food poisoning... I remember thinking, ‘Please do not try to kiss me!’ I was too embarrassed to tell him. I realised I was in love with Harry when I saw the way he was with my baby nieces - so loving and caring. I love the way he can captivate a room. I am always in awe and more in love every day (hate how corny that sounds!). I love how much energy he always has and his distinct lack of an ‘off button’. I love how much he loves me, how hard he makes me laugh and how supportive he is in every aspect of my life, even when I have terrible ideas!”

“Harry proposed on a Friday afternoon at my parent’s home, which means the world to me. Mum would have been jumping for joy. I was so overwhelmed that I couldn’t read the rose petals which said, ‘Marry Me?’ and I thought he was playing a mean trick. He had my favourite champagne on ice, scented candles burning and one of our favourite restaurants booked for dinner. It couldn’t have been more perfect.”

“Our wedding was the most ridiculously amazing day of our lives. The theme was Simple, Classic and Romantic. Every moment was a highlight, starting with an intimate dinner with immediate family and our bridal party at Agnes the night before, getting ready at The Calile Hotel and the perfect weather, the music, the champagne tower, the fireworks, the speeches, the sax player and the dancing! We didn’t want the weekend to end so we all met up the day after for brunch and bloody marys at the Lobby Bar followed by drinks at the QA Hotel. Our advice to others planning their wedding is don’t sweat the small stuff and do exactly what you want to do as a couple. Everyone will have an opinion but it is your day and should be exactly what you both want.”

Brad recreated my Mum’s wedding dress, which she designed, made and wore when she married my Dad. Mum was a seamstress and would have made my wedding dress, as she made all my outfits for special occasions. Sadly, Mum passed away from breast cancer in 2019. I tried Mum’s dress on one day for fun and showed Harry. He said, ‘You should wear that when you marry me’. I think she would be thrilled knowing her wedding dress was still in style and that I was wearing the very same one!

Ellen and Liz met online. “We had both kind of given up on finding something meaningful online, but managed to find each other and since our first date, we’ve never looked back!”

“The proposal took place in our apartment. We were sitting on the floor in the living room playing music and enjoying a glass of wine. All of a sudden it became a really intimate, romantic moment. Liz just kind of stopped and looked at me, and asked me to marry her. We didn’t even have engagement rings at that point, but we just both knew that it was right. It was the easiest ‘Yes’ I’ve ever said!”

“Our wedding theme was Native Australian. We wanted the day to capture the beauty of the Gold Coast Hinterland. We created our floral arrangements using flowers sourced from GC Flower Market. Mostly native florals were used in our bouquets to complement the rustic theme. Our Bridesmaids and Bridesman wore their own choice of outfits - Ellen’s side wore forest green and Liz’s side wore navy blue. Liz’s sister, Olivia Méli, made our fabulous cake. She is the Executive Chef at Luštica Bay Resort in Montegro.”

“Having all of our family and friends together was amazing. We had a significant number of guests who joined us from overseas and interstate. After the pandemic, it was so special to be able to celebrate with loved ones that we hadn’t seen for so long. Our advice to other couples planning their wedding day is to have a wet weather backup plan! It rained literally all day on our wedding day. Our venue was amazing, rejigging the setup for the ceremony by moving everything indoors.”

“We used theknot.com to create a wedding website with info, accommodation options and RSVP details for all of our guests. It was super easy to use and free! We created a QR Code that took guests to our website and included it on our invitations so everything was available online.”

ACADA AUSTRALASIAN HAUTE COUTURE WEDDING CAKE DESIGNER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The ACADA Australasian Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designer of the Year Award is part of the ACADA (Australian Cake Artists & Decorators Association) Australasian Cake Oscar Awards. It is designed to applaud the work of the very best of the best wedding cake designers. These are seriously talented cake creatives. The public were invited to nominate their favourite Haute Couture wedding cake designer and almost 10,000 nominations were received from all over Australia and New Zealand. The public were asked to vote for the top eight finalists whose work was then assessed by a panel of industry judges. Next, the finalists were given a challenge set by Lux Magazine Top 20 Global Wedding Planner, Alysia Bridger. Each finalist was asked to make a Haute Couture Wedding Cake, a minimum of one metre high, inspired by the romance of bridal flowers and chandeliers. Part of their challenge was to be able to transport their entries to Brisbane. Each finalist’s cake was recently on display in the Haute Couture Marquee at the International Cake Show Australia. The winner was selected by the public.

Meagan (Megz) Hyam and Ashley Jurkiewicz attended primary school together from grade one. “I was in Ash’s older brother’s year level at school. We met again in 2018 at the Doomben Racecourse where I was an entrant in the Fashions on the Field for Strabroke Cup. Ash was there with friends celebrating his birthday. I was on stage dressed to impress with one of my daughters by my side. I saw Ash and my instant thought was, ‘Wow! little Ashley has grown up’. Ash thought to himself, ‘Who is this stunner all done up to the nines?’ There was a little spark and connection. His cheeky smile and big blue eyes swept me away. Five years later, we are still enjoying entering Fashions on the Field together and he recently took out runner-up at the Girl’s Day Out races!”

“The proposal was my perfect day. We were spending a weekend at Highwood Park B&B in Maleny, our favourite little romantic getaway spot. I was swinging on a wooden swing in a huge tree with the most stunning sunset and thinking to myself, ‘Wow! this is the most perfect proposal spot’. Never in my wildest dreams was I expecting Ash would in fact be proposing right there and then! He ensured every little detail was perfect, even going to the lengths of sneakily recording it on my phone. He walked in front of me as I was swinging and I uttered the words, ‘You are ruining my view of the sunset!’. He said, ‘Oh really, I might improve your view’ and dropped to one knee, popping the question I had been waiting for, for what seemed like forever!”

Highlights. ASH: “Watching Megz and the girls walk down the aisle. We have five amazing kids (Ash has one and I have four). Also the wedding dance - dancing to our customised acoustic couple song and the weeks spent having professional lessons.” MEGZ: “Walking down the aisle and seeing Ash waiting at the end, with each step becoming that much closer to saying ‘I Do’ and being Mrs Jurkiewicz (and a life of having to spell my surname to absolutely everyone!) Also listening to Ash’s wedding vows. He melted my heart with his words and seeing him cry brought a vulnerability and sensitivity to the moment – it was Love, Love, Love.”

“My wedding advice is to choose a theme you both love. Once you understand your theme and the tone of the day, the rest falls into place. Be super organised. Invest in a wedding planning book to help keep your thoughts and budget on track. Have fun with it and don’t plan a wedding that isn’t you! Pick amazing vendors. If your vendors understand your ideas and can share your passion and vision, then they will all work well together.”

My advice (one year on) is don’t stop treasuring the memories. Look back on your day. Remember what you loved! Remember how it felt. Remember the first glimpse of your husband to be on your day. The first year might be challenging. Looking back on your gorgeous memories will remind you that today is worth it… and yesterday will never be forgotten. And that love always wins! In the beginning there was Love, Love, Love and 12 months on … we are very much still in love.

Jade Horrobin and Ashan Naumann met at university. “After meeting at a university event back in 2015 (more specifically, a lab coat pub crawl for the UQ Science Society) that was organised by Ashan (as the incumbent president for said society), it became obvious very quickly that our chemistry was contagious. We met up every day for months, under the guise of ‘studying together’ before officially updating our relationship status and making it official after my 21st birthday, when a photo was published to Facebook that very much accidentally looked like a wedding photo!”

“Ashan proposed at sunset on the beach at Kingscliff. After a romantic walk on the beach, which included Ashan crooning old school jazz songs into my ear and dancing on the sand, he got down on one knee, completely forgot his entire prepared speech and said, ‘Would you like to marry me?’, to which I just nodded through my sobbing tears.”

“Our ceremony was so romantic, and perfectly us. Restructuring it to suit us, we moved our wedding certificate signing to during cocktail hour, so we could have our movie moment and run down the aisle as soon as our Celebrant announced, ‘You may kiss the bride’. We were able to dance our way down the aisle and run straight up to our cocktail hour area - champagne and oysters (from the freshly-shucked oyster bar) in hand within 60 seconds of being married!”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to carefully consider the flow of the day. This is something our guests still haven’t stopped raving about. Take the time to pull apart your timeline and think about the actual reality of the experience for yourself and your guests. Is it clear to your guests where to go as soon as the ceremony finishes? How long could guests be standing around in the sun without a drink in their hand? Have you scheduled time into the day to take a moment away from the reception with your spouse to soak it all in? We performed our dance as soon as we entered the reception, which set the tone for a spectacular night of dancing and frivolity.

Idin and Lin met at their local dog park in the Brisbane suburb of Sinnamon Park. “I have a beautiful border collie x sheltie named Loki and Idin has a ferocious chihuahua x mini fox terrier named Pretzel.”

“We first met in early 2018, when Loki was still a small puppy. We enjoyed chatting together while our dogs were playing in the park. Loki likes to antagonize Pretzel because he enjoys watching him angrily reacting!”

Idin proposed to Lin at the spot where he first told her he loved her... on top of a ridge in White Rock Conservation Park.

“On our wedding day, it was a bit rainy in the morning but cleared before the ceremony started. We were married under the big Jacaranda tree at Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens and everyone was so happy. Our beautiful dogs were able to attend as well and Loki did a great job as the ring bearer. We had the most incredible florals which were created by New England Flower Co. Julia helped us decide on our theme when we had no idea what we were doing and Jessica was able to sort out some last-minute changes to make our day so perfect. We performed our first dance after the reception and then everyone jumped in to dance. It was so much fun.”

Belinda and Lester from Beleste Dance taught us our first dance. We were not sure we could do it in such a short time but we did it! They were so accommodating, friendly and professional.

“The proposal happened when Iain decided we should have a mini-vacation in Byron Bay. We booked an adorable Airbnb, packed the car and our dog and took off. Halfway there, our Airbnb messaged us to say some pipes had burst and we could no longer stay. Knowing he wanted to propose, Iain hastily booked us somewhere new, which ended up being even nicer than the original place we booked. He lit the fireplace, set out loads of little candles, cooked my favourite meal, popped the champagne and then got down on one knee. It was perfect.”

“Our wedding inspiration was a mix of a royal wedding and a fairytale. I’ve always had a big imagination and wanted a big, dream wedding in a cathedral and a big long veil.”

Tammy Nguyen and Joohee Oh met through a mutual friend. “Joohee proposed to me after we returned home from dinner and shopping in the city. As I entered our bedroom, I felt an obstruction against the door and immediately suspected an intruder in the house. But when I pushed the door open and turned on the light, I found our bed and floor covered in colourful balloons with the words ‘MARRY ME!’ spelled out on the bed frame with balloons. Overwhelmed with happiness, I turned around to Joohee and cried as he held me in his arms and asked me the question I had been waiting for, ‘Will you marry me?’. With tears rolling down my face, I responded with a question of my own, ‘Why aren’t you on one knee?’ Joohee laughed and explained that he was too excited, then got down on one knee and asked me again. I joyfully said ‘Yes!’. Despite being together for 11.5 years, Joohee managed to surprise me with the sweetest and most perfect proposal. We got engaged on 16 November 2018 and tied the knot exactly one year later.”

“Our wedding theme was ‘Modern + City Chic’. Incorporating a traditional tea ceremony made it an even more meaningful and unforgettable celebration. Despite our different cultural backgrounds (I’m Vietnamese and Joohee is Korean), our families embraced the Vietnamese culture and made it a truly special day. We had our tea ceremony in the morning (wearing traditional Vietnamese Bride and Groom costumes) then changed into our wedding attire for our first look at the Fantauzzo Hotel Rooftop at Howard Smith Wharves (now Crystalbrook Vincent). Prior to the ceremony on the deck, we had drinks, canapés, gelato and donut stations and the Kombi Kartel photo booth was available throughout the night. We had 220 guests seated in the Rivershed with a giant cherry blossom tree at the back of the room with smaller cherry blossom trees and candelabras as centrepieces. We had a dedicated ‘kids corner’ with bean bags and power ports for them to charge their ipads and phones. Some of the adults ended up in the kids corner!”

“The presence of our family and friends who had traveled from overseas (South Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea) and interstate added to the sense of occasion. Above all, the highlight was exchanging our vows in front of all our loved ones who had been a part of our journey over the past 11.5 years. The day was filled with emotions and I found myself tearing up during all the significant moments, including the tea ceremony, vows, and speeches. In other words, I was crying tears of joy (basically like a baby) the whole day!”

“I surprised Joohee by getting his best man, Chris, to do the first look before me. Dressed in a veil with a bouquet, Chris walked up and tapped Joohee on the shoulder. He turned around and they both laughed so much!

“As our European honeymoon plans were put on hold due to the pandemic, we decided to celebrate a different kind of trip - a babymoon. We were thrilled to find out that we were expecting a baby and wanted to take some time to relax and enjoy each other’s company before our little one arrived. We chose Hayman Island as our beach destination which gave us the chance to unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy some quality time together. Everything changed when our son arrived. The moment we held him in our arms, we knew our lives would never be the same. It was a love like we had never experienced before. “The day itself will fly by, so make sure to savour every moment and keep in mind that some things may not go as planned. For instance, we had organised sparklers and matchbox bonbonnieres for each guest to light up as we departed in the evening, but the scorching heat of over 40 degrees prompted a fire warning from Brisbane City Council, making it unsafe. We had to abandon our outdoor plans but luckily we were still able to have our indoor sparklers.”

Our wedding was the best day of our lives, filled with love, laughter and unforgettable memories. Even though the heat was almost unbearable, we were so caught up in the moment that we didn’t even notice. It was a day when everything felt perfect and we felt truly blessed to have each other and our loved ones there to celebrate with us. We realised how fortunate we were that it happened before the pandemic.
