Adriana Makras and Joseph Anthony met at an Australia Day party at Bar Pacino. “We bonded while trying to get our friends to talk after their first date. Joseph proposed on a trip to Japan with friends. He had planned to propose at a flower festival near Mount Fuji, however he couldn’t wait that long (after leaving the ring in a sushi restaurant) so he proposed at the top of the Bamboo Forest in Kyoto.”

“Our wedding theme was romantic, architectural, moody and fun. There were so many highlights. I wish we could relive them all again! Finally getting to walk down the aisle after having to postpone our wedding so many times, our first steps as husband and wife in church (called the ‘Dance of Isiah’) and entering our reception to see all our family and friends in one room ready to celebrate our marriage.”

“Our advice to other couples planning their wedding is don’t stress! I was lucky enough to have my mum and Joseph’s help with the planning and organising of all the vendors. This made the process a lot smoother. Unfortunately, we can’t control what gets thrown at us with restrictions and lockdowns so it’s always good to have a back up date booked with all your suppliers. Also, just enjoy the process and take it all in when the day comes. We haven’t been on our honeymoon yet but plan to head to North Queensland for the New Year.”

Meela Bradley and Dave McArdle met in Ireland in 2009. “My good friend Emma from work had recently met a lovely guy. She kept trying to set me up with his twin brother, but I wasn’t really interested. One night we were all out together. A gorgeous tall guy I didn’t recognise caught my eye, he was sitting at our table. ‘Who is that?’ I asked Emma, and couldn’t help but smile when she told me it was of course Dave, the twin she’d been trying to set me up with. We had a great night and Emma and I ended up becoming sisters-in-law after marrying the McArdle twins!”

“Our theme was relaxed bohemian elopement. We really wanted something very relaxed and beautiful. We both wanted our wedding to be laid back, fun and easy. It was just the two of us, which made it really special. We could just enjoy our special day together and do exactly as we pleased. My highlights were walking towards Dave on the beach, hearing our music, the ocean, and seeing for the first time the gorgeous setting that Danni from Elopements Noosa had created for us. It was really breathtaking and such a special moment. Also, laughing in the rain until our sides hurt! We really did just roll with it and it was so much fun. The rain absolutely poured down, we were soaked and my hair and makeup were a mess by the end, but we laughed and made the most of it!”

Congratulations GRACE & MICHAEL 26 April 2021, Toowoomba QLD

Grace Patterson and Michael Parsons met in high school. “That summer, our budding romance was fuelled by beach outings with friends and countless hours on MSN. On Valentine’s Day 2009, Michael finally found the excuse he needed to ask me out on a date. After a box of chocolates, a bunch of lilies and a screening of Ricky Gervais’ Ghost Town, things were Facebook official and have been ever since. We grew up together and graduated together. We supported each other through university studies and early careers and became joint carers for my dearly beloved dog Mikey. In 2009 we bought our very first home. For our 10-year dating anniversary, Michael organised a surprise getaway. I had no idea where we were going, but I had a very strong feeling that this would be the weekend he’d propose. After a few hours of driving, we reached Elements of Byron Bay, a wonderful beachfront resort I’d wanted to visit for years. When we reached our villa, there was a bottle of wine waiting along with 10 red roses - one for every year of our relationship. We enjoyed our cheese and wine platter before Michael suggested a small car trip. He took me up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse and when we got to the top, the wind was blustering like crazy! My hair was all over the place! After walking around the lookout, Michael dropped on one knee and popped the question. I of course said ‘Yes!’ I was ecstatic but not too surprised. I was more surprised when Michael revealed his brother had secretly photographed the whole occasion in secret!”

“Our theme was classic elegance with soft tones. Since Michael and I had been together so long, we decided to buck tradition and walk down the aisle together. It was a little bit controversial, but we’re so glad we did it! I was nervous about so many eyes on me as I walked down the aisle and to have Michael by my side made it so much easier. Afterall, he is the most important man in my life and I felt the honour of walking me down the aisle should fall to him. Instead of seeing each other for the first time at the end of the aisle, we did a first look and I’m so glad we did. After 12 years together and months of uncertainty and stress, seeing each other at the cellar door was completely overwhelming. We both broke down in tears and held each other for minutes. We’d made it! It was my favourite moment of the day by far. A few hours into the reception, we snuck out for night photos with the videographers and photographer. While a little nippy, the night air was beautiful and the fairy lights across the venue were magical. We took amazing night photos down the alleyway of lights and in the courtyard surrounded by twinkling lights. We decided to practice our first dance before we re-entered the reception. It was a moment for just us and it ended up being one of the most special moments of the entire day. Our first dance was to ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’ - The Mamas and Papas. We had dance lessons so we could make the most of twirling beneath Preston Peak’s magnificent wine cellar chandelier. As my something old, I wore an antique cameo of my dearly-departed nanna around my ankle on a gold chain which was gifted to me by Michael. I was so sad she wasn’t there to see me get married and this made me feel close to her.”

“We originally planned a wedding for October 2020 but Covid threw a spanner in the works! Like so many couples, we went into a full-blown panic when we went into national lockdown. We knew that even if Australia was under control by October, other countries wouldn’t be and we had so many overseas family and friends, including two members of our bridal party. We made the call in April to postpone the October wedding (just to be safe). Every time we planned something, restrictions changed. When things started to look better, we bit the bullet and settled on a new date - 26 April 2021. After sweating out a Queensland lockdown in early April, we were lucky enough to get to our wedding day with minimal Covid restrictions. Although one bridesmaid couldn’t make it, our third groomsman defied the odds and made it back from Dubai to Australia and quarantined so he could be there. We got lucky and after all of the crazy stress, our big day was more than worth the wait!”

“Before Covid, we had planned to honeymoon in South Africa. Michael was born there and I love to photograph wildlife, so going on safari is incredibly special to us. We had a three-day mini-moon at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat in the Gold Coast Hinterland. It was freezing and raining a lot of the time, but we were just so happy to be married! We both love being outdoors surrounded by bushland and birdsong. We enjoyed beautiful hikes in Lamington National Park, had wonderful animal encounters and indulged at the Lost World Day Spa.”

He then surprised me with a celebration with our friends who were waiting at Maya (formerly Bar Eleven) to celebrate my birthday and our engagement at the place we first met.”

Annie and Chris held their ceremony and reception at Mr & Mrs G Riverbar in Brisbane city. Their wedding theme was classic champagne chic, with vintage Moet et Chandon champagne coupes. Their guests were also treated to an after party at the Iris Rooftop Bar. Chris’s Highlights: “Seeing Annie walk in and her smile when she looked at me. I always said I would only get married once. Congratulations VANESSA & ADRIAN 11 June 2021, Maleny QLD

Vanessa Hoe and Adrian Ford met online. “We were destined for each other and are both so incredibly happy to have crossed paths. It was obviously meant to be.” On a trip to the USA a few years ago, Adrian popped the question during a photoshoot in the Valley of Fire, Nevada. Vanessa was modelling her gorgeous new designs for When Freddie Met Lilly’s latest collection while Adrian headed behind the camera to take a few snaps. When Vanessa turned the other way, Adrian got down on one knee and popped the question! “It was so picturesque and couldn’t have been more perfectly romantic.”

Vanessa and Adrian decided to make their wedding a three-day gathering to be all held at The Old Dairy. Cuisine On Cue put together a beautiful feast for the ‘Recovery Party’ the following morning and Vanessa’s girlfriends from Beautiful Weddings styled it to perfection. On the Sunday, a huge ‘I-DO BBQ’ was put on with other family members and friends who were unable to make the big day. It was also a belated celebration for Adrian’s 40th birthday! Vanessa is a renowned Bridal Gown designer from Brisbane with her own successful label When Freddie Met Lilly. Vanessa designed her own wedding gowns - yes, gowns! There were three of them, all incredibly perfect. Vanessa’s ceremony design was paired with a more traditional style veil with lace edging that had Adrian’s initials hand-embellished into the fabric. The theme was relaxed boho/country. The incredible styling and crisp, fresh country air combined to make for a perfect celebration. A highlight was Vanessa’s best friend and niece being able to make it from Melbourne. “It was really touch and go as lockdowns were happening everywhere at the time. Also, seeing Adrian biting his lip to hold back tears during the ceremony was so special. Finally, being able to hold this celebration with our nearest and dearest who miraculously could all be there, despite Covid.”

Vanessa and Adrian spent their honeymoon on Fraser Island. “Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to start early, use a spreadsheet and take time off before the wedding to do the last minute things!”

Kylie Strickland and David Chapman met online - plenty of fish. David proposed on bended knee at a restaurant in front of their families on Kylie’s 37th birthday. “Our wedding theme was a touch of glam. We were married on the only weekend in 2021 which didn’t have Covid restrictions! Our groomsman from Melbourne was allowed to board his plane the night before our wedding as the borders had literally just opened! The lockdown was announced the following week.”

David and the guests performed a surprise flash mob dance for Kylie. “While our mothers were witnessing our marriage certificate, we had music playing which was from both of their own weddings. Our wedding included so much dancing, with guest interaction before the ceremony, the bridal party performing a dancing entrance, a surprise flash mob and our special first dance. I also performed an emotional ‘father daughter’ dance with my father, Kevin. Our band had our entire guests up dancing the night away! We also treated our guests to cheese toasties late in the evening! It really was such a beautiful, fun day.”

Grace Cross and Joshua Scanlon met while they were both working at Surfair Beach Hotel in Marcoola. “Josh proposed to me at Point Perry in Coolum Beach, where we spent so many nights after finishing work, talking for hours on end. I had absolutely no idea he even had plans to propose. Josh and his sister managed to plan and coordinate everything, including my ring, without anyone else knowing.”

“When we first drove through the gates at Yandina Station, we knew it was the place we wanted to be on our wedding day. It is a cattle farm with an old dairy barn which provided the inspiration for our rustic/contemporary theme. With the old dairy barn as the backdrop, we had two large wooden wine barrels at the top of the aisle and dried grasses, wooden logs and pillar candles as aisle runners and an arbour made of a mix of dried and fresh palms.” “Highlights were getting ready with the girls, seeing Josh for the first time on the day as I walked down the aisle, Josh seeing me for the first time, the food, everyone dancing and the sunset photos.”

“Our advice to others planning their wedding is enjoy every step. However, not everyone likes to wedding plan so don’t stress or push too much for your partner to do some of the work. You don’t have to start with the big things, sometimes picking the colours first is where it’s at! It’s your wedding, do what you want to do, not what others want you to do. Have a fabulous team around you. We were so blessed to have Sally and Neil from Yandina Station. Their property is breathtaking and they went above and beyond to make our day extra special. Jodie Modric Photography created the perfect atmosphere for us to cut loose and enjoy the afternoon and The Sunny Film Co. caught all of the craziness. Our food was delicious and our cake from Chocolate 2 Chilli was next level! We are yet to go on our honeymoon, given that we have the Covid pandemic going on right now. We figured we will take our time and go somewhere later on.”

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Birch Suzanne met Steven in 2017 at their local gym. “I was Steven’s personal trainer. We trained together for over six months and Steven did a great job keeping things professional, until one morning I received a personal message just saying ‘good morning’. I thought it was strange as he hadn’t contacted me outside of the gym. Before long, the gym sessions became a little more ‘friendly’ and Steven finally asked to meet me for a coffee. Arriving on his motorbike, we met each other in the car park to walk into the shop together, but as I took one step out of the car, he removed his helmet and planted the biggest kiss on me. I was so surprised as he always seemed so gentle, shy and sweet. He showed me from that day, what it was to have a strong man beside me. We had been dating for six months and I had a new job back in the beauty industry where I had spent most of my career prior to personal training. I was approached by the salon owner to buy the shop from her and without hesitation Steven said, ‘Let’s do it, you will be great!’ Three years later, through several Covid lock-downs, ups and downs, trials and errors, finally we had grown our little beauty salon into Harmony Wellness Spa. A tranquil Day Spa in the heart of Redcliffe, where Steven grew up and I had made a life for myself over the past six years. Earlier in 2021 just before my 45th Birthday, Steven took me for a weekend away to the mountains and proposed. With things on the Covid front seeming to have settled, we decided on a six months plan. Our wedding date 31 July 2021 sounded perfect and after months of planning, it was time to relax and get ready for a week of love and joy. As a busy mother, grandmother and fiance, I know how hard it is to make time for yourself, so planning my bridal shower was a no brainer. I had a full day of pampering at our Day Spa, inviting my mother, future mother- in-law and two friends. We indulged in mineral baths, an infrared sauna, facials, massages and pedicures while enjoying champagne and nibbles in the Spa Lounge before meeting the rest of our guests at Arts & Drafts for an evening of dancing, belly dancing lessons and sip and paint. Two days before our wedding when things were at their most stressful, I booked myself in to the day spa again for a full day of ME TIME. I had an infrared sauna to release the toxins and stress, full body exfoliation for perfectly flawless smooth skin and an indulgent full body hot stone massage then I was wrapped up in a full body mineral mud wrap, with crystal healing facial. After all that, a beautiful shower under the waterfall shower followed by destressing in the mineral bath, just me! I can’t tell you how amazingly relaxing it is, you must try it yourself.” “Just two days later, we were in the mountains for our wedding weekend at Mt Tamborine. We woke so relaxed on the morning of our wedding but by 10am we were scrambling our thoughts as to what plan of action to take after hearing the announcement of the snap three-day Covid lockdown. Our ceremony was planned for 3pm, so of course we were worrying how we could make it all happen. Within 30 minutes of hearing the news, our coordinator Nikki had contacted our celebrant, photographer, musician, caterer, and venue to bring everything forward. We scrambled to get our guests to the venue early, everything set up to perfection as we had planned. We had our beautiful, amazing, perfect wedding at 1pm. The sun was shining with not a cloud in the sky, birds were chirping and guests smiling. Our ceremony was the most important part of the day and Karen made us all feel calm, happy and relaxed. Kiarna Dunlop and Brendan Hall met on Tinder. “Within the first few messages we bonded over our love of ‘The Office’.” Brendan proposed to Kiarna on New Year’s Eve 2017 on the same beach where they shared their first date.

“A friend and I (Brendan) made the excuse of getting more drinks and left the party to set up 100 small battery-powered candles in the shape of a giant love heart in the sand. I then called Kiarna and told her we had a flat car battery. I knew it would be the only way to get her down to the beach because she has a jump pack in her car. I stayed on the beach while my friend waited in the car park for Kiarna to arrive. When she arrived, my friend told her I had gone for a walk to the beach and she should go find me. She tried to call me a few times and I didn’t answer. Then she sent four ‘answer your phone’ texts to me but I refused to call her so she had to come to find me! Eventually she came ‘storming’ down the beach as she had to take off her high heel boots to walk on the sandy path. When she made her way past the overgrown grass and saw me standing in the middle of the candle lit heart. Even though it was dark, the moon lit Kiarna up enough for me to see her burst into tears. We hugged, I gathered myself a bit, got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. I’m pretty sure she said ‘Yes’ through the crying.”

“Our highlights were the fireworks and of course marrying our best friend! We took a long time to decide on fireworks but decided to go all out to make everlasting memories. The fireworks were kept a secret from our guests and it was amazing to see them all so surprised when they began.” “Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to realise some aspects will be out of your control. Don’t stress or waste time on anything you can’t control. Move on to the next thing. No matter how much time you allow to plan your wedding, it’s over in a flash, so try to focus only on the positives and being in the moment together. Our Celebrant told us the ceremony happens so quickly and he was absolutely right. Focus on the both of you and don’t worry about missing everyone’s reactions as your photographer will have that under control. Renee and Luke met on Hinge, a dating app. Luke proposed on my birthday, 13 November 2020 on a Venetian style gondola at the Gold Coast. We had dinner, wine and before dessert he read out a birthday card he’d written to me and at the end of it he proposed. It was beautiful.

“We had a snap lockdown during our first wedding so ended up getting married the day after, once the lockdown ended. We had a private ceremony with just our immediate family. We only had 24 hours to plan it. We found out at 12pm Saturday that the lockdown was lifting that night and we were married at 12pm the following day. We got married in Luke’s brother and sister-in-law’s beautiful backyard and had Subway and Sushi platters for lunch afterwards. Our florist used the fresh flowers we had ordered to create a bouquet and ceremony decor. We didn’t wear our wedding outfits. I wore a white skirt and top from my wardrobe. It was a beautiful and intimate celebration. We postponed our wedding celebrations to a month later. Unfortunately there was another snap lockdown on the weekend of our second date. We decided to cancel the wedding celebration because we were already married and didn’t want to have to deal with potentially more lockdowns on a future date. As I hadn’t yet worn my wedding gown, we planned a photoshoot at our wedding venue wearing our wedding outfits and with the beautiful flowers we had ordered.” “Our wedding theme was boho luxe with a Moroccan vibe. Marrying my husband surrounded by our immediate families despite the craziness of the lockdown week was definitely a highlight. We kept our priorities straight and made it all about our love and our future rather than the wedding.”

“Our advice to other couples planning their wedding during Covid is to talk about all the possibilities of restrictions and lockdowns. Decide what are your priorities and any deal breakers. Will you get married regardless and what guest restrictions are you happy to go ahead with? Make a guest list for different levels of restrictions. Remember that the goal of a wedding is to become married, not to have the most beautiful wedding.” “We spent our honeymoon at O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat in Lamington National Park and the Reef View Resort on Hamilton Island.”

Manoli proposed at Spicers Peak Lodge in Maryvale. “On our 10-year dating anniversary, Manoli surprised me with a weekend away at Spicers. I thought it was just a weekend away and started getting ready for dinner. When I came out of the bedroom, Manoli had filled the lounge room with candles and rose petals and was on one knee asking me to marry him.”

“The inspiration for our wedding was bright and filled with love. When I think of love I think of beautiful pink, red and purple tones and candle light. After 12 years together and what had been an awful 12 months due to my dad passing away and Covid, my biggest highlight was walking down the aisle and locking eyes with Manoli and seeing his big smile. I was so nervous but as soon as I saw him, I instantly calmed down and knew no matter what happened in our lives, together we would be able to get through it and come out stronger. I felt so much love and happiness in that moment.”

Jodie Blom and Cameron Carwood met in May 2017. “We met in the most romantic way, with a right swipe on Tinder. The first date was set for the Plough Inn at South Bank and we spent the night getting to know each other over dinner and drinks. Days later the conversation was still going, despite me working away, so we knew we were onto a winner with each other. To really prove if we belonged together, Cameron decided to put me through the ultimate test of camping with him and 1J (our dog). I nailed that test so he decided to keep me around! Fast forward to July 2019. We were at home having a fire in the front yard one evening and Cameron said there was something on 1J’s collar for me. I looked and it was an engagement ring. It was so special and meant the world to us to have our loving dog, 1J with us all day. It was his favourite day ever - he loved having all of his favourite humans in the same place at the same time. Ange managed to capture so many gorgeous photos of our beautiful 1J. We had seats in the front row reserved for our passed loved ones with their photos and flowers on the seat.”

“I was raised by my Aunty and Uncle in New Zealand from 8 years old and have a close bond with them. They refer to me as their daughter. They were able to fly over very lastminute when they announced the opening of the border bubble between QLD and NZ. They gifted Cameron and I with a ‘pounamu’ (also known as a greenstone) which is considered a precious and powerful stone by the Maori people. A pounamu carving is considered a special and significant family heirloom that carries spiritual significance. These two pieces of greenstone were crafted by a New Zealand stone-carver from a single piece of pounamu purchased from the South Island specially for us. These pieces are significant and symbolise our marriage union. Cameron’s piece represents an axe (toki) and symbolises strength, agility and aggression (Tumatauenga - the god of war). My piece represents a tear drop (roimata) and symbolises compassion, love and empathy (Papatuanuku - the earth mother). Both pieces are worn as necklaces and we were fortunate to capture some photos wearing them. They will become a significant family heirloom through future generations. My Aunty and Uncle also gifted me a heart-shaped pounamu for my 25th birthday which I attached to my bouquet on the day. Cameron’s ring was a signet ring handed down from his father who had received it on his 21st Birthday.”

We took a walk on the boardwalk at sunset and that is where Christian, holding Fletcher, got down on one knee. He had asked someone to take a photo of us and she quickly changed to video so we now have a video of the whole thing. So lucky!”

“Our theme was Modern Romance, with soft blush, white and nude tones throughout. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect and everything we could have imagined. It is truly one of the best moments in the world when you get to marry the person you love, and our day was nothing short of magical. We are so thankful to everyone who was involved and how accommodating they were with us when we had to postpone our November 2020 wedding due to Covid. It was definitely worth waiting for! Our highlights included walking down the aisle and seeing each other’s faces. It is such a surreal experience and everything else just seemed to fade away in that moment. Also the fact that everyone could be there. The current climate is so hard and we felt so lucky that our family were all able to attend and share in our perfect day.”

Kelly Weir and Matthew Woodrow have known each other for 15 years. “We went to the same high school and were very close friends for a lot of those years. Lots of high school parties, festivals and good times have been spent together. We used to have pre drinks at Matthew’s grandma’s house when we were in our early 20s and have since bought that house and renovated it. The house has been in the family for nearly 70 years. It wasn’t until we both found ourselves single and I had moved to Brisbane that we started to see other other in a different light! Matthew proposed on Fraser Island during a camping trip. He had set up a GoPro and a message written in the sand. Just as I was walking towards him, a huge wave washed the message away, and once he dropped the knee another wave washed the GoPro into the ocean.”

“We eloped with just our closest family as our witnesses. We wanted something simple yet significant. My 10 year old walked me down the aisle. One of our highlights was when Matthew was reading his vows and started to get emotional. My 2 year old niece yelled out, ‘Oh no!’ We were lucky to have our close friend and Masterchef contestant, Brent Draper provide the catering. Laura Pembroke and Jarrett Brugman met through mutual friends. They were married at Howard Smith Wharves overlooking the Brisbane River, with the backdrop of the Story Bridge and a glistening city skyline. “The day shone bright with a brilliant blue, sunny Autumn sky, made more beautiful by the gorgeous white and blush florals adorning the space. Petals were strewn down the aisle and fluttered in the soft afternoon breeze – it was like a floral wonderland!”

The wedding theme was minimalist, modern and romantic. Laura and Jarrett decided not to have a bridal party. Laura’s sister Stephanie, her cousin Sophie and her future sister-inlaw Julia supported her in the pre-wedding preparations. They all wore white as a nod to the bride. Matthew’s parent’s church leader of North Brisbane Salvos helped bless us through the wedding ceremony, creating a loving and calm environment. Having his grandfather there was a huge highlight for Matthew as well as seeing me walk down the aisle. We were so blessed to have our closest friends and family able to attend during Covid and we received so many lovely messages afterwards, saying it was the best wedding ever! We felt very relaxed, loved and happy on our special day. Oh! and another highlight was when the photographer was chased by a bull for the money-maker shot. We spent our honeymoon at Airlie Beach.”

The ACADA Australasian Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designer of the Year Award is part of the ACADA (Australasian Cake Artists & Decorators Association) Australasian Cake Oscar Awards. It is designed to applaud the work of the best of the best within an industry of very talented cake creatives. The public were invited to nominate their favourite Haute Couture wedding cake designer and almost 4,000 nominations were received from all over Australian and New Zealand. The public were then asked to vote to select 8 Finalists whose work was then assessed by a panel of industry judges. Next, the Finalists were given a challenge set by Lux Magazine Top 20 Global Wedding Planner, Alysia Bridger. Alysia paired each Finalist with a Brisbane-based Bridal Gown Designer to create an exquisite gown to inspire them to create their couture wedding cake. The cakes and gowns were displayed in the Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designers’ Marquee and the winner was selected by the public attending the ACADA International Cake Show Australia Show in Brisbane in May 2021.
