MUSIC THEATRE NOW
SUNDAY 22 MAY – WEDNESDAY 25 MAY ROTTERDAMSE SCHOUWBURG
Music Theatre NOW (MTN) is a competition as well as a global hub for interchanges in the field of contemporary opera and music theatre. Join us for three days to meet old and new friends from around the world during this special event, which is central to Operadagen Rotterdam. All 18 artistic teams of the award-winning MTN productions will be showcased as part of the programme. HISTORY The International Music Theatre Committee was founded in 1969 as a working group within the International Theatre Institute (ITI). In 1983 the committee initiated a triennial event, the Music Theatre Workshop, whose goal was to exchange ideas on new works and developments in this genre. The artistic teams – composers/and or librettist and directors were invited to give lectures presenting the productions with the use of video. The idea for Music Theatre NOW – generously supported by the German ITI Centre – was developed in the late 00’s by Laura Berman and Roland Quitt in 2008 the former Music Theatre Workshop was transformed into a worldwide competition with an international jury.

DE DOELEN
Classical:NEXT was born out of a simple idea. Namely, to bring various schools of classical music together under one roof to offer a platform for interchanges with the aim to develop new pathways for classical and contemporary music. Approximately 2000 classical music professionals from 1000 companies and over 40 countries have engaged with Classical:NEXT so far. Since the first edition in 2012, it has grown into the world’s most important classical music meeting. The idea of innovation is expressed in the event’s name and it is evident throughout. Classical:NEXT is a networking event which provides key opportunities for promoting and exploring new talent, novel creative ideas, and future-oriented business practices. Classical:NEXT comprises a conference and an expo as well as showcase concerts and screenings. Hundreds of delegates meet for discussions in the space of four days in order to learn about and from each other. The members of the Classical:NEXT community range from grass-roots DIYers to prominent and established companies and institutions including Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera (New York), Spotify, Universal, the China National Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonics, Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Rotterdam based concert hall de Doelen hosts the international conference. This year’s Classical:NEXT focuses on music theatre in collaboration with Operadagen Rotterdam.
NOMINATION CLASSICAL:NEXT INNOVATION AWARD Operadagen Rotterdam is of eleven shortlisted organisations the only Dutch nominee for the Classical:NEXT Innovation Award. The 2016 award winners will be announced during the closing ceremony of Classical:NEXT on 28 May.

SUPPORTING TALENT Operadagen Rotterdam is committed to sustaining opera and music theatre. Up-and-coming music theatre talents are given a stage throughout the festival. In addition, several programmes have been developed to further support talent. NIEUWE STEMMEN (“NEW VOICES”) Singing talents can apply for the annual Nieuwe Stemmen programme coached by director and composer Timothy Nelson. Eight selected singers from Asia, South-America, Cuba/USA, and Europe will collaborate on a festival production (Orfeo’s Night Song in 2016) and present solo programmes during the living room concert series Operadagen Thuis (“Operadagen at Home”). STUDENT PROGRAMMES Operadagen Rotterdam signed a covenant in 2015 to support and foster students from Codarts, Rotterdam’s international university which delivers high-quality professional education in the fields of music, theatre, dance, and the circus arts.

Further students from a broad array of musical/theatre educational institutes in the Netherlands are encouraged to attend A Different Night at the Opera. They will experience cutting edge performances at night and take part in workshops in the morning. “NEW MAKERS” The performers from music theatre group CLUB GEWALT graduated from Codarts in 2013 and are financially supported with the “new makers” grant by the Performing Arts Fund NL since 2016. They have the full support of Operadagen Rotterdam under this arrangement over the next two years. Their new productions will premiere at the festival and Operadagen Rotterdam offers guidance throughout the year. MUNICH BIENNALE The yearly Operatie Muziektheater meeting (page 11) plays an active role in supporting talent. It connects music theatre artists and festivals from around the world. Additional during Operadagen Rotterdam 2015 young performers could participate in special workshops and pitch the results to the artistic team of the Munich Biennale in hopes of being presented at the 2018 festival. 21
