Season of the Baritone
stlukesonline.org
It’s been one of life’s most unexpected gifts—how much you love being a grandparent. The unbridled joy of seeing the world through your grandchild’s eyes. When you were in the hospital, you knew you had to recover not just for yourself, but for him too. After all, the best is still to come.
It’s your life. We help you live it.
Take Care Forward.

President of the Opera Idaho Board of Directors Welcome to our 2014 – 15 season of great opera. If you haven’t heard, this is a season of celebration. We are celebrating the 80th birthday of our benefactor, counselor, and fellow opera enthusiast – Mrs. Esther Simplot. It’s very simple, Opera Idaho along with our sister organizations in the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy (Boise Philharmonic and Ballet Idaho) would not exist without her generosity and vision. Everyone in the valley owes her a debt of gratitude for making the arts accessible and important. Few small cities can boast about the arts the way we can. And it’s due in large part to Esther Simplot. Happy Birthday from all of us at Opera Idaho! Many people assume that in my position as President of the Board of Directors that I must have a lifelong connection to opera. But that is not the case since I came to appreciate opera fairly recently. Access to any of the arts was limited while growing up in rural Oklahoma. Fortunately my parents loved music; broadway tunes or jazz standards were often on the phonograph and there was religious music on Sundays. I sang in the church and school choirs, played in the marching and concert bands, and played and sang in several garage bands. But I didn’t find opera, or catch the opera bug, until my wife Leslie and I attended a performance of Carmen at the Santa Fe Opera about 10 years ago. As Carmen breathed her last, lightning lit up the sky around us and the winds whipped her hair. I was impressed and I was hooked. This was great art and whoever coordinated the weather with the action on stage had done some fine work. Since then opera has been a big part of our lives, worthy of time and energy, and certainly worthy of celebration. Speaking of fine work, our General Director Mark Junkert, has steadily and inexorably improved the quality of the opera performed here in Boise. Any of you who attend regularly know this to be true. And for those of you who attend our outdoor summer performances you know that he regularly pulls off the weather / opera synchronization thing quite well. Seriously, the real proof of his dedication and skill are the voices that grace our productions. We’re lucky to have him as our staff leader at Opera Idaho and that’s clearly something to celebrate!
Mark Junkert
Opera Idaho General Director When The Metropolitan Opera’s season is nearly cancelled due to a threatened lockout in a heated labor dispute, as was the case this summer, and when San Diego Opera announces a cessation of operations as it did in April (since recanted) … does it mean anything for us in Boise, Idaho … at Opera Idaho? I think it does. To begin with, it’s an extremely connected world of opera. I thought of this as I was leafing through the program this summer at Santa Fe Opera and there on page 113 in the bio of tenor Jubal Joslyn was mention of Opera Idaho. Jubal had performed with us as Remendado in Carmen just months earlier and was now in his second season as a Young Artist in one of the premiere training programs in the world. I thought of other singers whose bios might show roles sung with us: Christopher Job, our Reverend Blitch in Susannah in 2013, now on the roster of The Met and appearing last season in two Met – Live in HD broadcasts; Rolando Sanz, our Rodolfo in La bohème in 2012, who was last season the Duca in Rigoletto at Seattle Opera; and, Karen Mushegain, our Cinderella in 2010 and Seattle’s in 2013. All these artists have “moved on,” as it were, to bigger opera houses. Opera Idaho has long enjoyed a somewhat reciprocal relationship with Opera San José: many artists, Christopher Bengochea, Michele and Jason Detwiler, director David Cox, conductor Sara Jobin, to name but a few, have performed here and there. This season we welcome in her Opera Idaho debut soprano Cecilia Violetta López (Gilda in Rigoletto), fresh off two seasons in San José. This summer Cecilia spent time in Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance training program in New York City where she worked with internationally acclaimed baritone Mark Rucker, our Rigoletto. Won Whi Choi (Duca in Rigoletto) comes from that program as well. In Evgeny Onegin we have a current San Francisco Adler Fellow in Zanda Švēde (Olga) and a recent graduate in Marina Harris (Tatiana). Last season’s Figaro, Austin Kness, and Susanna, Susannah Biller, in The Marriage of Figaro were graduates of the same training program. Opera Idaho is in many of these cases the company artists move on to. Which gets me back to my original question. With so few opera companies in the U.S., we all depend on each other for the nurturing of talent, and artists depend on us for their livelihood. Good performances beget recommendations, and careers advance. When an opera company struggles, we all take note and talk about the same issues. Our patrons worry for us. What happens in New York and San Diego … and in other opera cities … it does decidedly matter to us here in Idaho. And, what happens here does matter elsewhere.

Education Outreach Touring Opera to the Schools
In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. We are still in the planning stages for the next education tour. As we get closer to 2015, we will be sending out an invitation to elementary schools throughout the Treasure Valley.
Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses
The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses provide a fun opportunity for children to perform vocally, and to learn about music, harmony and following a conductor. It is led by Linda Berg, Idaho Music Education Association’s 2010 Educator of the Year. Split in two groups, the Angelus Chorus is for children 2nd-4th grades and the Children’s Chorus is for grades 5-10.
Opera Idaho Summer Opera Camp
The Opera Camp will offer a basic introduction to the elements of singing. The weeklong camp will culminate in a performance by the students. An intermediate class may be available for advanced students. For students aged 10-18. For more information on any of the above programs, performances, or Angelus and Children’s Chorus auditions, please call Fernando 345-3531 ext. 3.
