Transitions. We all have them … individuals, businesses, groups, cities, even planets. As we enter the 2019/2020 season, Opera Idaho is going through a number of them. We have moved from a Budget 4 (below $1 million) to Budget 3 ($1 – $3 million) level in Opera America’s classification system. This takes us from a category which included opera companies in Anchorage, Annapolis, Dayton, El Paso, Eugene, Orlando and Pensacola and puts us in a category with ones in Des Moines, Louisville, New Orleans, Columbus (OH) and Tulsa. This transition parallels that of our city … Boise continues to grow rapidly and is now listed with new and larger cities in comparative reports. We now find ourselves competing for artists with larger companies, with resultant higher costs to bring those artists to Boise. We’ve added staff. We’ve added patrons, both at the box office and on our donor list … as many people move to The Treasure Valley from bigger cities, they bring new ideas, and we want to be receptive to those ideas. One of those ideas is to take an annual patron trip … in recent seasons we’ve seen operas and other concerts in Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago, and this season we head to Houston (conveniently in mid-winter!).
Idaho By the time you’re reading this, we’ll have a new Board leadership team. Andrew Owczarek, after over three years of stellar service as Board President, stepped down from that role in April. He’s been ably replaced these last several months by CoPresidents Vicki Kreimeyer and Janny Wing. The year ahead will see several new members joining our Board. Three Board members’ terms have expired – we thank Yvonne McCoy, Jodi Reynolds and Mike Wetherell for their years of service. The Board, in a major revision of its bylaws earlier this year, has adopted a number of ‘best practices,’ one of which is term limits for members, another a nominating committee for officer positions. So there will be transitions. In the end, however, one thing will remain constant … our commitment to bring you the very best productions with the best casts of operas of all kinds. You’ve responded well to our recent seasons (last season set a revenue record in ticket sales), and we know you want our artistic growth to continue. This season begins with our second opera by Jules Massenet, following the surprise success of Werther in 2017. Reuniting Cecilia Violetta López, Thomas Glenn and Jason Detwiler from 2017’s electrifying L’elisir d’amore, Manon promises to be equally exciting, if more tragic. November sees a semi-staged baroque opera, Handel’s Acis and Galatea, in collaboration with Boise Baroque Orchestra and its new artistic director Robert Franz, who

led last season’s West Side Story in Concert. And, what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with Puccini’s La bohème, the opera that proves love at first sight can happen! To conclude our season, Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, the mostproduced new opera in the years since its premiere in 2002, finally comes to Boise, with frequent Opera Idaho conductor Sara Jobin at the helm. This is a must-see opera that brings Sister Helen Prejean’s real-life experiences with a death-row inmate to the stage in the dramatic way that our art form does best. Our commitment to education remains strong. We’ll perform our school outreach program over 60 times this season for over 20,000 students. You’ll notice us out and about this year … in our Opera Idaho van purchased with funding from Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation! We’ll add Moscow to the growing lists of Idaho cities where we
present this program. Our Children’s Choruses has expanded to include even younger children with a new Kinder Chorus. We have our share of fun! If you’ve never been to an Operatini or one of our three fundraisers (Auction of Arias, Black & White Gala and In Good Taste), you don’t know what you’re missing. At the Opera America conference in San Francisco in June, one of the general sessions, “Examining Traditions,” took a look at what makes opera what it is and how, sometimes, the very word ‘opera’ is a barrier to those approaching the art form for the first time. What traditions must remain constant for it to be opera; what new ideas ways can be introduced so more people will come on our journey? It’s all about transitions.

Volunteering
Opera Idaho would not be able to do everything it accomplishes without the help of people in the community willing to donate their time to help with everything from making phone calls, data entry, to ushering for many of our productions. Become a Volunteer Volunteers are a valued and integral part of Opera Idaho. They play a vital role by helping our artists, supporting productions, reducing costs and providing skilled assistance in virtually every department. Their hard work and generosity keeps the beauty and passion of opera alive. Our volunteers have the opportunity to participate in committees, attend volunteer socials, attend and assist at Opera Idaho special events, plan signature events and fundraisers, assist with various office tasks, meet international opera stars, and set and achieve goals for the opera.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please fill out the Volunteer Information Form at the information table during the performance or online at Operaidaho.org. School Outreach In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. This season we will be visiting elementary schools in The Treasure Valley and Eastern Idaho with John Davies’ children’s opera The Billy Goats Gruff, featuring music by Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. Children’s Choruses The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses provide a fun opportunity for children to perform vocally and to learn about music, harmony and following a conductor. The program is split into three groups: the new Kinder Chorus for age 3 to 1st grade, Angelus Chorus for 2nd to 5th grades, and Excelsior Chorus 6th to 12th grades. The program is led by Brenda Winkle. Brenda is currently the elementary music specialist and choir director at White Pine Elementary in Southeast Boise. She has directed the All City Honor Choir and choirs at the elementary, junior high and high school levels.
Planned performances include Veterans Day Concert with the Treasure Valley Concert Band and Boise Philharmonic Master Chorale, a Holiday Concert, The Nutcracker with Ballet Idaho and Boise Philharmonic in December, and closing the season with a Spring Concert in May 2020. Rising Stars Created in 2018, Opera Idaho Rising Stars is an opera training and college preparatory program for high school singers. This program will not only help students prepare college auditions, but will teach them what happens backstage, and about stage movement. They will receive solo coaching, meet and speak with opera professionals and perform opera scenes!
Opera Idaho is Now Mobile! Thanks to a generous grant from the Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation, Opera Idaho now has a van! This van will allow us to visit more schools in more locations throughout Idaho.
