Proud Supporters of Opera Idaho
The entire Opera Idaho team - among them performers & production associates, other participants, staff, volunteers at all levels, and contributors – welcomes you to enjoy the many varied performances of our 2017-2018 Season. Those performances now range from children’s chorus/ vocal education and extensive school performance outreach, through mainstage productions, Operatini concerts, summer musicals, Auction of Arias, and much more shown elsewhere in this program – with more to come in the future. We measure our achieving our mission by the growing attendance and participation of people like yourselves in the communities we serve – reaching over 40,000 exposures across the breadth of Idaho including Pocatello, Sun Valley, Meridian, McCall, and continuously striving to reach new areas. We are particularly proud of our expanded and growing presence in our schools, and our upcoming young singers initiative. Having said that, we are also especially proud that the entire range of support we have gotten from across the state: volunteer hours too large to count and growing financial support across all demographics and all income levels have allowed us to be fiscally strong so we can in fact undertake the expansions of our mission to better serve all the citizens of Idaho … and the Northwest. I am privileged to be able to thank you all for your collective engagement with us. Believing that you enjoy what you experience with us, we would ask you to consider being a more active member of our 40,000+ community across Idaho by further supporting and participating in our programs. Our participants tell us there is considerable satisfaction in helping us to create these programs. Support and participation can come through a variety of ways: becoming a member of a working committee, volunteering to assist our performance schedule, hosting visiting artists, being a performer, financial contributor, through becoming a Board member and/or Opera Idaho ambassador across the state. If you have further interest in any of these ways to help us improve the breadth and quality of what we do please reach out to any existing volunteer/ supporter or go through our web site, www.OperaIdaho.org.

Mark Junkert
Opera Idaho General Director In this, my tenth season at the helm of Opera Idaho, we bring you a season of “love in its many manifestations,” as our 201718 season marketing tagline suggests. With only four operas, we can’t come close to covering all the aspects of love. But, we can give it a try! Gaetano Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, starring Rupert, Idaho native Cecilia Violetta López as Adina, returns to the Opera Idaho stage for the first time since 2008. It is courtship of a traditional sort … boy loves girl, girl plays hard to get by involving another man, there’s a love potion (red wine), it looks like the two lovers will never get together … but, it all works out in the end. And no one dies! López, a soprano who has previously appeared for Opera Idaho as Violetta in La Traviata (2016) and Gilda in Rigoletto (2014), is a rising star in the operatic world and made her European debut this summer in Belgium in Donizetti’s other well-known comedy, Don Pasquale. One of opera’s most endearing comedies, L’elisir also features tenor Thomas Glenn (Magic Flute, 2015) as the country-bumpkin Nemorino, Christopher Job (Susannah, 2013) as the slippery Dulcamara, and Boise baritone Jason Detwiler (most recently Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus, 2016) as the braggadocious Belcore. Opera Idaho’s production of Gian-Carlo Menotti’s one-act opera Amahl & the Night Visitors returns to The Egyptian Theatre for two holiday performances. The opera was commissioned by NBC and first performed by the NBC Opera Theatre on December 24, 1951, in New York City at NBC studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, the same studio where it was broadcast live on television from that venue as the debut production of the Hallmark Hall of Fame. It has since become a holiday staple for families, the single mostperformed American opera, and one of the most performed of all operas. The story tells of the night when Three Kings, following the star of Bethlehem, stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor shepherd boy with a disability who lives with his widowed mother. Through their encounters with the Three Kings and a magic star, Amahl and his mother learn how unselfish love and good deeds can work miracles. Opera Idaho’s production, which I have conceived, was first performed in 2010.
One of the most popular operas of all time, Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is near the top of the list of operas performed by Opera Idaho in its 44-year history with five productions. Last performed in 2011 at The Egyptian Theatre, this production returns to The Morrison Center, made possible by funding from The Morrison Center Endowment Foundation. The opera tells the story of CioCio-San, the trusting and innocent young geisha of the title, who disastrously falls in love with American Navy lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton, only to be abandoned by him. Sharpless, the sympathetic American consul, and Cio-Cio-San’s loyal servant Suzuki do all they can but are unable to avert tragedy.
The mainstage season closes with the first production ever in Idaho of André Previn’s 1995 opera A Streetcar Named Desire, based on Tennessee Williams’ 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. The production brings to Boise Conductor Alasdair Neale, Sun Valley Summer Symphony Music Director, for his Opera Idaho debut. Love as a blinding light, love confused with animal passion, the consequences of not being loved … this opera gives us these dimensions as it takes us out of comfort zones to explore love. In her Opera Idaho debut, soprano Julie Adams stars as Blanche, the deeply insecure, aging Southern belle who lives in a state of perpetual panic about her fading beauty. Adams is a former Adler Fellow with San Francisco Opera and this summer took the lead female role of Mimi in that company’s mainstage production of Puccini’s La bohème. Baritone Gregory Gerbrandt is Blanche’s nemesis Stanley Kowalski, most famously portrayed by Marlon Brando in the play’s initial Broadway performance as well as the 1951 film adaptation. Gregory makes his fifth Opera Idaho appearance, previously appearing in leading roles in Glory Denied (2016), Evgeny Onegin (2015), L’elisir d’amore (2008) and The Mikado (2006). The production is a “Made in the USA,” opera, reviving a series of American operas begun in 2010. As you may know I’ve agreed to remain as General Director through June 2022. Since I arrived in 2008 our budget has more than doubled from $450,000 to now just shy of $1 million; we are performing more operas in more venues; non-mainstage offerings like Operatinis, this season’s Winterreise Project, Children’s Choruses, Critical Mass and art song concerts have increased; our special fundraising events have grown in number and, more importantly, in money raised; and, our education outreach has expanded and for the first time this season includes a Young Artist Program with national artists. By the time you read this, Opera Idaho will have plotted out a new five-year Strategic Plan, Vision 2023, a course of exciting new programs and initiatives to take us even further down the road to being a premier arts organization in Boise and throughout Idaho, with a little bit of national recognition added to the profile. It will be a period of continued growth.

Leave a Lasting Legacy
Opera Idaho is taking steps to ensure that Idaho can continue to experience the beauty of opera long into the future. Inspired by Esther Simplot’s endowment gift, we have established an Opera Idaho Endowment Fund with a goal to raise $1 Million for the fund by 2019. Consider making a gift to the Endowment which will ensure Opera Idaho an everlasting vehicle of support. As we look toward the future, also consider including Opera Idaho in your estate planning. A planned gift is a way to leave your mark on the community and allow future generations the opportunity to experience the art-form you cherish. Planned giving is easy, there is no minimum commitment, and your gift will live on and provide the gift of music for future generations in Idaho. Please contact our Director of Development, Stephanie Derentz, for questions about Opera Idaho’s Endowment, information on planned giving opportunities or to let us know if you have decided to include Opera Idaho in your estate planning.

Volunteer of the Year
Touring Opera to the Schools
Opera Idaho would not be able to do everything it accomplishes without the help of people in the community willing to donate their time to help with everything from making phone calls, data entry, to ushering for many of our productions. Once a year the staff chooses a volunteer who goes above and beyond to help wherever needed. Our Volunteer of the Year Award for the 2016-2017 season went to Susan Jones.
In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. This season, in October 2017, we will tour with an abridged version of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love to thirty elementary schools throughout the Treasure Valley.

Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses
The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses provide a fun opportunity for children to perform vocally and to learn about music, harmony and following a conductor. It is led by Anna Brannigan. Split into two groups, the Angelus Chorus is for children in 2nd-5th grades and the Children’s Chorus is for 6th-10th grades.

The Opera Camp offers a basic introduction to the elements of singing. The week-long camp culminates in a performance by the students, often an abridged production of an opera. For students aged 10-18. For more information on any of the above programs, performances, or Angelus and Children’s Choruses auditions, please call Fernando 345-3531 ext. 3.
Become a part of the magic! Opera Idaho is looking for Opera lovers who want to work behind the scenes and volunteer to help bring the Opera to life! As an Opera Idaho volunteer, you will have the opportunity to participate in committees, attend volunteer socials, attend and assist at Opera Idaho special events, plan signature events and fundraisers, assist with various office tasks, meet international opera stars, set and achieve goals for the opera. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please fill out the Volunteer Information Form at the information table during the performance or online at Operaidaho.org.
