Andrew Owczarek President of the Opera Idaho Board of Directors

On behalf of the entire Opera Idaho team - among them performers, staff, volunteers, sponsors and contributors - I am pleased and privileged to be able to welcome you to the variety of outstanding productions in our 2018-2019 Season. In order to achieve Opera Idaho’s vision to be celebrated and supported both in Idaho and nationally, offerings include a new satellite of Opera Idaho’s Children’s Choruses providing vocal education across the entire Treasure Valley; additional education outreach performances to elementary schools throughout Idaho; the exciting contemporary opera As One, that follows Glory Denied and A Streetcar Named Desire of recent seasons; and musicals in concert.

We are thankful to all of you for your growing acceptance of our productions. Last season we reached over 40,000 exposures across the breadth of Idaho including Pocatello, Sun Valley, Meridian, and McCall—continuously striving to reach new areas. We are particularly proud of our education outreach programs expanding and introducing more than 15,500 elementary students in our schools to opera. This season also sees the launch of Opera Idaho’s Rising Stars, an opera training and college preparatory program for high school singers looking to pursue careers in vocal performance. The entire range of support we continue to receive is overwhelming—volunteer hours too large to count and expanding financial support across all demographics and income levels. Your continued support allows us to be fiscally strong so we can continue to foster wider acceptance, appreciation and enjoyment of opera throughout the State of Idaho and beyond. Trusting that you enjoy what you experience with us, I would ask you to consider being a more active member of our growing community across Idaho. Our participants tell us there is considerable satisfaction in helping us to create these rewarding and enjoyable programs. Support and involvement can come through a variety of ways: becoming a member of a working committee, hosting visiting artists, being a performer, making financial contributions and legacy donations, becoming a Board member and/or Opera Idaho ambassador across the state. If you just want to have a different yet very casual and fun experience that also supports Opera Idaho activities, please consider coming to Boise Bingo in Garden City and playing at our normal and upcoming special bingo evenings.

If you have further interest in any of these ways to help us improve the breadth and quality of what we do please reach out to any existing volunteer/supporter, staff member or go to our web site, www.OperaIdaho.org.

PROUD SPONSORS OF OPERA IDAHO

Mark Junkert

Opera Idaho General Director As Opera Idaho notes its 45th anniversary this fall and as I begin my second decade in the leadership role of the organization, time is on my mind. And, my mind keeps flitting back and forth across the years as I think of our history, how it impacts what we do today and helps shape the future. So, I think this is an appropriate year in which to focus on three things: honoring the past, celebrating the present and planning for the future. We begin our season celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, perhaps the most influential musical figure this country has ever produced. His West Side Story, which we present in concert format, is a seminal work in American musical theatre history. Its performance is a natural extension of our outdoor musicals-in-concert of the past eight seasons – moving indoors to the wonderful acoustics of The Morrison Center enables us to better focus on the music of this masterful score. Starring Cecilia Violetta López as Maria and Joshua Dennis as Tony, the performances reunite a pair that made La traviata in 2015 one of my favorite productions. Former Boise Philharmonic Music Director Robert Franz conducts, returning to The Morrison Center stage for the first time since 2016.

The first movie shown at The Egyptian Theater when it opened in 1927 was John Barrymore’s silent film Don Juan, so it’s particularly fitting that we bring in October Mozart’s Don Giovanni to what has been our home theatre since 2010. Our cast, led by Korean baritone Kyu Won Han, is one drawn from favorite singers of my first ten seasons at Opera Idaho – all but one have appeared on our stages in that time. And, what better venue than The Egyptian to present in February Idaho’s first-ever staged performances of Verdi’s Aida, one of the great operas of all time – we have most of the set without any work at all!

Recent times have caused us to look at the past differently, and this has been the case in the opera world as well. The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players return in April to The Morrison Center with their delightfully reimagined The Mikado, which addresses concerns of stereotyping and diversity with updated respect. In May, with our production of the new opera As One, we tackle another issue of our time, that of sexual diversity. Laura Kaminsky’s chamber opera, a coming-of-age story about a transgender woman, is taking the country by storm. Premiering in 2014 at Brooklyn Academy of Music, As One was the 14th most-produced opera in North America in the 2016/17 season. Among the producing companies have been Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Colorado Opera. We are proud to join the ranks of those prestigious companies in presenting this opera, and we do so in collaboration with Boise State University’s newly-constituted School of the Arts.

Critical Mass Vocal Artists, a part of Opera Idaho since 2016, offers three concerts, including in June the Idaho premiere of Craig Hella Johnson’s oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard, exploring the life, death and legacy of the Wyoming teenager who became a national figure after he was beaten and left for dead for being gay in 1998.

Our Children’s Choruses program celebrates its 25th anniversary this fall. We mark that occasion with a gala on November 17, but perhaps more importantly with an expanded program, adding choruses in Meridian. We also begin our first season of Rising Stars, an opera training and college preparatory program for high school singers. We welcome our first group of four Young Artists to Boise this fall – they come from Canada, China, Sri Lanka and Wisconsin, truly an international group. The season includes more school performances than ever before in our history. More Operatinilike events too! Our new strategic plan challenges us to grow along with the Treasure Valley. Forbes Magazine recently called Boise the fastest growing city in the U.S. Opera Idaho feels the excitement that comes with that accolade. Our budget for this season has crossed over the $1 million threshold for the first time in our history. We have big plans for the future, including a new performing arts venue in downtown Boise. We thank you for coming along with us thus far on our journey to bring opera of the highest quality to the Treasure Valley and to all of Idaho. We thank you for joining us this season and hope you will continue to support us in the years ahead.

Education Outreach School Outreach

In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has visited local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. Starting in October 2018, we will visit elementary schools througout the Treasure Valley with Anna Young’s children’s opera The Enchanted Forest. School Outreach, 2017

Opera Idaho Rising Stars

Opera Idaho is pleased to announce the creation of Opera Idaho Rising Stars—an opera training and college preparatory program for high school singers. In this program students will meet and speak with opera professionals, learn what happens backstage at the opera, learn stage movement, receive solo coaching, perform opera scenes, and prepare them for college auditions.

Opera Idaho Summer Opera Camp

The Opera Camp offers a basic introduction to the elements of singing. The week-long camp culminates in a performance by the students, often an abridged production of an opera. For students aged 10-18. For more information on any of the above programs, performances, or Angelus and Excelsior Choruses auditions, please call Fernando 208-345-3531 ext. 3.

Volunteer of the Year Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses

The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses provide a fun opportunity for children to perform vocally and to learn about music, harmony and following a conductor. It is led by Brenda Winkle. Split into two groups, the Angelus Chorus is for children in 2nd-5th grades and the Excelsior Chorus is for 6th-12th grades. This season will see the expansion of the program to the West Valley with rehearsals in Meridian as well as in Boise. Planned performances include The Festival of Trees in November, Voices of Angels Holiday Concert, The Nutcracker with Ballet Idaho and Boise Philharmonic in December, and closing the season with a Spring Concert in April 2019.

Opera Idaho would not be able to do everything it accomplishes without the help of people in the community willing to donate their time to help with everything from making phone calls, data entry, to ushering for many of our productions. Once a year the staff chooses a volunteer or two who go above and beyond to help wherever needed. Our Volunteer of the Year Award for the 2017-2018 season went to Carla Fromm and Ellen McKinney.
