Andrew Owczarek President of the Opera Idaho Board of Directors

On behalf of the entire Opera Idaho team – among them performers & production associates, other participants, staff, volunteers at all levels, and contributors – I am honored to be able to thank you for coming to enjoy the varied performances of our 2016-2017 Season. As with all of our activities – ranging from children’s chorus/vocal education and school performance outreach, through mainstage productions, Operatini concerts, summer musicals, Auction of Arias, and much more shown elsewhere in this program – we measure our achieving our mission by the growing attendance and participation of people like yourselves in the communities we serve. That attendance and participation has seen us expand to over 40,000 exposures across the breadth of Idaho – Pocatello, to Sun Valley to Meridian to McCall - in the past two years … with more to come in this season. We are particularly proud of our expanded presence in our schools, and our recent reach out to the wellness community. Having said that, we are also especially proud that the entire range of support we have gotten from across the state – volunteer hours too large to count and financial support across all demographics and all income levels – has allowed us to be fiscally strong so we can in fact undertake the expansions of our mission to better serve all the citizens of Idaho. Expecting that you enjoy what you experience with us, we would ask you to consider being a more active member of our 40,000+ community across Idaho by further supporting and participating in our programs. Support and participation can come through a variety of ways: becoming a member of a working committee, volunteering to assist our performance schedule … being a performer … financial contributions … through becoming a Board member and Opera Idaho ambassador across the state. If you have further interest in any of these ways to help us improve the breadth and quality of what we do please reach out to any existing volunteer/ supporter or go through our web site, www.OperaIdaho.org. Again thank you … and enjoy the performance.

Mark Junkert

Opera Idaho General Director

Last season saw a number of firsts for Opera Idaho. The presentation of a full semi-staged opera (La traviata) in Ketchum expanded our reach from Pocatello and McCall, where we’d previously presented programs. The presentation of an opera (Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied) in an airplane hangar continued our search for alternative venues. Financially, the first endowment established by Esther Simplot and the first end-of- season financial surplus have given us a huge boost as we move into the next several years. Looking back at recent seasons, there have been more firsts: in 2015 Tchaikovsky’s Evgeny Onegin was the first-ever Russian-language opera performed in its original language; and, that same year we added our first Development and Marketing Director to the staff. Our popular Operatinis found the perfect home in The Sapphire Room at The Riverside Hotel. We have added an art song recital series which has become popular with our Resident Company singers and our audience.

This season will see Opera Idaho’s first Massenet opera, Werther, in Spring 2017. If we count our abridged, English language adaptation of that composer’s Cinderella, which will travel to 30 Treasure Valley elementary schools in January and February, then it’s a double first! We’ve added another first-time staff position in Artistic Administrator Curtis Crafton. We don’t want to suggest everything is new. Our longstanding Children’s Choruses program continues, as does our extensive outreach program to elementary schools (for the first time last season travelling to 32 schools, including ones in Blackfoot and Pocatello). Our Black and White Gala and Auction of Arias have outdone themselves in contributions each of the last several years. And, of course, artistically, we have not abandoned standard operas such as Madama Butterfly, La traviata, Carmen, Tosca, Die Fledermaus, The Magic Flute, and others … and, we will not abandon them. But, there have been many firsts of late, and we are proud of them. They are a sign of a healthy organization. During a period when many opera companies were struggling, some even ceasing to exist, Opera Idaho was growing … in The Treasure Valley and throughout the state. What firsts await us in the next decade or half-century? We can speculate and dream those dreams with confidence gained from so many recent successful firsts.

Endowment from Esther Simplot Opera Idaho is proud to announce that we are one of the recipients of a $3 million endowment from Esther Simplot. The Pauline Becker and Dorothy Simplot Memorial Endowment Fund was set up to benefit Opera Idaho, Ballet Idaho and the Boise Philharmonic each year with distributions that will last forever. We are so thankful for Mrs. Simplot and her generosity to our organization. Mrs. Simplot has been involved with Opera Idaho since 1973 and with this endowment has ensured her support for Opera Idaho endures long into the future. The endowment was announced at Idaho Community Foundation’s annual luncheon in May, 2016, which also honored Mrs. Simplot with ICF’s Friend of the Foundation award.

Leave a Lasting Legacy

Opera Idaho is taking steps to ensure that Idaho can continue to experience the beauty of opera long into the future. Inspired by Esther Simplot’s endowment gift, we have established an Opera Idaho Endowment Fund with a goal to raise $1 Million for the fund by 2019. Consider making a gift to the Endowment which will ensure Opera Idaho an everlasting vehicle of support. As we look towards the future, also consider including Opera Idaho in your estate planning. A planned gift is a way to leave your mark on the community and allow future generations the opportunity to experience the art-form you cherish. Planned giving is easy, there is no minimum commitment, and your gift will live on and provide the gift of music for future generations in Idaho. Please contact our Director of Development, Stephanie Derentz, for questions about Opera Idaho’s Endowment, information on planned giving opportunities or to let us know if you have decided to include Opera Idaho in your estate planning.

Testimonials I’ve volunteered with Opera Idaho for over eight years. During my time as a volunteer, I’ve had the opportunity to assist in many capacities including shepherding talent during performances, working with the production crew on set changes and prop handling, and ushering. Outside of performances, I’ve helped with mailings and worked at fundraising events. Basically, I’m ready to pitch in where needed! It’s meaningful to me to be able to see Idaho singers such as soprano Cecilia Violetta López in Opera Idaho’s recent productions of La Traviata and Rigoletto. I know how expensive productions are and that they require the efforts of many people. Outside of the performances, I enjoy Mark Junkert’s interesting lectures before the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD” broadcasts. I’m happy to have contributed to Opera Idaho’s ongoing success by volunteering because I know how fortunate Idaho is to have high-quality opera productions, and I want individuals in the area to continue to be able to experience classical music and wonderful voices. - Alice Alize Norman, Dedicated Volunteer

Staff & Volunteer, Auction of Arias, 2015

Thank you so much to Opera Idaho for bringing The Mini Magic Flute to elementary schools in Idaho! My daughter attends Pioneer Elementary and came home singing operatically about everything after your performance. I love it! In my pre-mom life, I was a music educator in the Valley and I earnestly wish for my daughter to find the love of music that I have. Opera Idaho’s outreach program helps to not only educate the youngest people about the awesome-ness of opera, but you have also taken root in their ears so they know what good music sounds like. This is something that is absolutely invaluable in my book! - Josie Call, Mom to a kid who now shares her love of Mozart because of Opera Idaho’s Education Outreach Program We attended Opera Idaho’s performance of Rigoletto in November of 2014. We have seen this opera performed on stage a couple of times, have a DVD of a live Metropolitan Opera performance and even listened to it on the Met Radio satellite station a week before Opera Idaho’s performance. Obviously, it is one of our favorite operas. We want to say that Opera Idaho’s performance was spectacular. The principals were terrific and surely gave it their all. It was better than we could have imagined and obviously well-received by the audience as evidenced by their lengthy standing ovation. In fact, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances. We credit Opera Idaho, its Board, management team and all other individuals who work so hard to make such

professional productions. We understand just how difficult it is to capture and hold an audience for opera these days, whether it is in Idaho or New York, and we can say that Opera Idaho truly makes us proud! - Mickey & Bob Angell, Long-time Patrons and Director’s Circle Contributors The arts have always played an important part in our lives, but it wasn’t until recently that we found a love of opera through Opera Idaho. We realized that opera is a combination of many art forms with talented singers, exquisite music from the orchestra, dancing and acting. The performing arts in the Treasure Valley are vibrant and growing and we believe Opera Idaho is a major player bringing a wonderful sense of culture to our State. We appreciate that Opera Idaho’s performances feature both local and national artists and think it’s important to continue bringing contemporary and meaningful operas to Idaho. The history and story behind the operas are also fascinating to us and we love hearing Mark Junkert’s incredibly informative pre-performance talks. Over the last few years we’ve really seen an improvement in quality in the productions and can say that Opera Idaho truly stages first-class opera performances. - Wanda & Bob Firman, Patrons and Friend Level Contributors Rigoletto, 2014

Education Outreach Touring Opera to the Schools

In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. This season, in January 2017, we will tour with an abridged version of Massenet’s Cinderella to thirty elementary schools throughout the Treasure Valley.
