Idaho

Mark Junkert General Director

Two years ago in this space I wrote of transitions. Opera Idaho had moved up to a new budget category in Opera America’s listing with a budget of over $1 million dollars; we were in a period of increasing attendance; we’d added staff; we’d undergone a major rewrite of our bylaws. As the 2019/20 season began, we looked forward to an exciting season with continued growth. For a while that happened. We opened our season at The Egyptian Theatre, first with Manon starring Cecilia Violetta López in the title role, then Handel’s Acis and Galatea in collaboration with Boise Baroque Orchestra. La bohème, produced at The Morrison Center in February 2020, achieved the largest attendance and sales revenue in our then-47 year history. And then the performing arts world came to grinding halt, as did most of everything in the world. The 18 months since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have been beyond difficult. We managed to produce smaller events: Operatinis, recitals, fundraising events and outdoor Christmas caroling. Then there was our highly successful Opera in the Park in July, the first of what we hope will be the major cultural event of the Boise summer for years to come. There were no mainstage operas in front of live audiences, here or mostly anywhere.

The pandemic is not over. But if you’re reading this in a theater, it’s likely that we’re back performing fullystaged operas again. The 2021/22 season has plenty of them, all rescheduled from previous seasons. From the frolicsome Merry Widow to the heart-wrenching Dead Man Walking, from the fiery Carmen to the soul-searching An American Dream. Our first-ever collaboration with Boise Contemporary Theater, All Is Calm, comes this fall. Our Children’s Choruses, Critical Mass Vocal Artists, and Emerging Artists programs return as well. A wide array of emotions, topics, artists, and venues … all to get us back to art in its role of elucidating the human experience. It’s an experience almost all of us will approach now in different ways than we would have two years ago. Good art is timeless – the messages will fit us today just as much as they did pre-pandemic. Thanks to the continued financial support of our patrons, an influx of government money and greatly reduced expenses from not producing operas, Opera Idaho is in a strong position to move into this and future seasons. We’ll adapt as needed, of course. I suspect we’re not done with that for a while. Thanks for bearing with us as we do. Enjoy the opera!

As I was getting better acquainted with someone recently and they learned of my involvement and longtime commitment with Opera Idaho, the question arose … Why opera? I chuckled. This is a story that I’ve told many times and it always makes me smile because in some ways it surprises me still. I grew up in small town Oklahoma, an oilfield boomtown. The countryside was filled with the rhythm of pumpjacks going up and down, a subtle music always in the background. Our house was filled with music of many sorts. At one time, my dad owned part of the local radio station and we kids got the hand-me-down records. My mother sang in the church choir as well as in a ladies’ group which did choral pieces and played many-hands piano pieces. A few years later, Mom and her best friend began reprising Broadway musicals for all the clubs in our little town. I frequently fell asleep to Mom practicing her music. But it wasn’t until much later that I found opera. Fast forward … Marshall and I moved to Boise in 1994. Several years after the move, our best friends told us that a group from Opera Idaho was going to Santa Fe to see some operas. They knew of our love of northern New Mexico and suggested that we join the group. Of course, we did.

The first opera that we saw on this trip, actually the first opera that I really fully experienced was Carmen at the wonderful Santa Fe opera house which is open-air on the sides and the back of stage can open also. The setting, the music, the voices all came together in a very powerful way. Most memorable was the scene where Carmen and the robbers are in the mountains. The back of the stage opened to look out at the Jemez mountains beyond; and there was a thunderstorm moving through. Lightening was crashing over the mountains, the wind was blowing through the theater with a sprinkle of rain, and Carmen’s hair was flying in the wind as she sang. It was thrilling! From that moment on, we knew we were hooked on opera and have been involved ever since. Some folks like to study an opera before they attend. Not me. I like to be surprised. I like the thrill, the goosebumps, the laughter, and the tears that opera evokes in me. So, that’s why opera. I hope you will enjoy our Carmen as much as I did my first one! … and that you find thrills and surprises in the other operas this season.

In the 2017-2018 season, Opera Idaho established its Young Artists program. Renamed to Emerging Artists in 2020. The Emerging Artists program is designed to provide training and performance experience for talented singers at the beginning of their professional careers. They will also be filling smaller roles in our mainstage operas as well as serve as understudies for the lead roles, as well as participate in smaller performances throughout the season.

GO WHERE EVENTS FLOW

PROUD SPONSORS OF OPERA IDAHO

Opera Idaho would not be able to do everything it accomplishes without the help of people in the community willing to donate their time to help with everything from making phone calls, data entry, to ushering for many of our productions. Become a Volunteer Volunteers are a valued and integral part of Opera Idaho. They play a vital role by helping our artists, supporting productions, reducing costs and providing skilled assistance in virtually every department. Their hard work and generosity keeps the beauty and passion of opera alive.

Volunteers of the Year

Our volunteers have the opportunity to participate in committees, attend volunteer socials, attend and assist at Opera Idaho special events, plan signature events and fundraisers, assist with various office tasks, meet international opera stars, and set and achieve goals for the opera. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please fill out the Volunteer Information Form at the information table during the performance or online at Operaidaho.org.

Once a year the staff chooses a volunteer, sometimes two or more, who go above and beyond to help wherever needed, and recognize them for their service. Our volunteer of the year for the 2020-2021 season will be announced at our Volunteer Appreciation Event on October 28, 2021.

DEDICATED AND

DYNAMIC Attorneys and opera singers have more in common than you might think. Both train intensely. Both take unwavering dedication. And both, if done right, create dynamic experiences that change lives for the better. We’re proud to support this season of international masterpieces in our hometown.

School Tour In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with a program geared towards students in grades K-6. Last season we prepared a digital offering as we were unable to visit schools in person. This season we hope to be able to visit some schools in person, and will have a digital offering for those we are unable to visit. Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses provide a fun opportunity for children to perform vocally and to learn about music, harmony and following a conductor. The program is split into three groups: Kinder Chorus – age 3 to 1st Grade Angelus Chorus – 2nd to 5th grades Excelsior Chorus – 6th to 12th grades The program is led by Kerry Calverley. Kerry has been working with children’s and youth choirs of all levels for 30 years. Most recently, Kerry was the director of choirs at

Children’s Choruses Gala, 2018

East Junior High School in the Boise School District. In the Boise area, she has been a children’s choir director at Trinity Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, also co-directing musical theater productions for the singers in these programs.

Opera Idaho is Now Mobile! Thanks to a generous grant from the Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation, Opera Idaho now has a van! This van will allow us to visit more schools in more locations throughout Idaho.
