Andrew Owczarek President of the Opera Idaho Board of Directors
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am honored to have the opportunity to thank you for coming to enjoy the 2015 – 2016 Season of Opera Idaho – the broadest and most innovative schedule we have ever offered. This year that schedule will not only include great classical and contemporary operas, Operatinis, Auction of Arias, the Black and White Gala, youth vocal coaching and special youth performances, a wonderful recital in January, and our summer musical, but we will also involve taking some performances to other locations in the state of Idaho. With your attendance and support, contributions from our sponsors, the dedication of staff and volunteers and the efforts of a Board drawn from all parts of our community we are able to provide Idaho outstanding vocal and artistic events that we hope entertain, inspire and move you. As you attend these events we would ask you to consider further supporting our activities beyond your ticket purchase: direct contributions … special event attendance & sponsorship … committee/Board membership are just a few ways you can help us provide a better product to everyone in Idaho; please just contact us through our web site or personally to inquire about further details. Again, thank you and enjoy the performance. Evgeni Onegin
Mark Junkert
Opera Idaho General Director
Music of any kind can move human emotions. Opera, with the addition of words, plot and the visual elements of staging, costumes, sets and make-up, has the possibility of doing that in the grandest way. Opera can, at its best, bring glory to triumph, give pointed definition to revenge, pull at our heart strings by showing us true love, uplift joy to new levels, sink us into profound despair in our grief … even show us that often laughter is the best medicine for what ails us. The operas of this season do that. The word that describes it best is passion. We mourn the loss earlier this year of Bernadette Bonaminio, Emeritus Board member and pioneer of Opera Idaho since its founding in 1973. Bernadette’s life is celebrated in this program. That opera was an important part of Bernadette’s life would be an understatement – she gave heart and soul to numerous Opera Idaho (and before that name change, Boise Civic Opera and Boise Opera) projects, up to and including events in just the last season.
As we were about to go to press with this program, we learned of the passing of our founding Children’s Choruses Director Linda Berg. Linda fought a courageous, three-year battle with cancer, continuing her work with the children with dignity and grace even into September of this year. Linda began the preparation of the Three Spirits for our opening production of The Magic Flute, one of her favorite operas, and she led rehearsals of the choruses she founded in 1993. If there were a person who is irreplaceable, it would be Linda. What music and opera meant to her life and to all she came in contact with is a legacy of incomparable power.
A goal, I might say the primary goal, of art is to help us find meaning in the human experience. It is no secret that many operas end in death, not often peaceful. These are characters on a stage, sometimes but not often portraying real people. As we grieve, we remember … and art helps us in the process. We can’t always say how or why, but we know. Opera Idaho has been producing operas for 42 years, and you have likely seen some of our productions. You have probably seen opera in other cities, other countries. There will be more, this season and beyond. Art will continue to help you find answers. In that way the song made possible by many who have left us continues. That is the best legacy of all.

In loving memory of
Bernadette Bonaminio In memory of Bernadette Bonaminio, long-time supporter and Board member Emeritus of Opera Idaho for her many years of song and service to bringing beautiful voices to Idaho! We will miss you! Bernadette Bonaminio was an active member of Opera Idaho and, along with Esther Simplot and Doug Zimmerman, earned Emeritus status as long-time board members. Bernadette and her husband of 55 years’ first date was Turandot with Leontyne Price at the Chicago Lyric Opera. Bernadette started out with the Boise Civic Opera in 1978 and was an active member of that group and then Opera Idaho. Our condolences to all of her family and friends and our sincerest thanks for all she and her husband Dan have done in support of Opera Idaho. ... and we thank all who made donations in memory of Bernadette.
