“the air of the city makes one free.” (Medieval Germanic saying)

Leave it to those medieval Germans to put aside love of forests, streams, and wild boars to embrace city life! Of course, they knew if they lived for one year in the jurisdiction of a town, by law they were set free of the drudgery of working as a serf for a hoity-toity lord. But think-- if you live in the heart of the city---How free could you be? Free to … • have the front-row seats for concerts, festivals, opera, art, ballet, library and great dining? • be part of a new lifestyle that embraces young professionals, empty nesters, and city lovers? • feel smug because you are less gas dependent/ more environmentally conscious than your suburban friends? • take advantage of tax abatements while building equity? • know, if you are in an historic building, by your support for historic preservation, you have kept building materials with “embodied energy” out of landfills? (while enjoying great architectural details) • know, if you are in a new building, by your support of contemporary design, you are living in an energy-conscious/cutting edge design? (while enjoying great architectural details) • hop a bus or bike? (remember to buy a raffle ticket to win a $650 bike from B1 Bicycles) • stroll, walk, or jog the soon-to-be newly completed Scioto Mile—from North Bank to Grange Insurance Audubon Center? (no German wild boars—but great bird watching—and maybe a German beer) Enjoy Columbus Landmarks Foundation’s 11th Annual City Hop! Doreen N. Uhas-Sauer, President

Established in 1977, Columbus Landmarks Foundation is a non-profit membership organization that advocates for, promotes and preserves Columbus landmarks and neighborhoods. When you think of the city, think of Columbus Landmarks Foundation. This year, we continue our famous “It Takes a Village to Make a City 198 Years Old” tours with some old favorites strolls and more new walks….Old North Columbus, Iuka Ravine, Hungarian Village, the Short North, Sellsville, and many more. In addition, we will continue the Historic Tavern Tours, Part II (with plans for Part III and Part IV later in the year). Our first tavern tours were so popular we had a huge waiting list to work through. By mid July, we will have 3 new historic taverns available on Thursday nights. So always check online at Landmarks’ website for upcoming events and current information. www.ColumbusLandmarks.org In the fall, we will continue our “Illuminated Spaces: Sacred Places” tour series where architecture comes alive through stained glass, community history, and ecclesiastical traditions. And of course, there will be lovely crunchy-leaf walks through the historic Green Lawn Cemetery. “Ghosts and Gables” tours will be in its 20+ year, exploring stories of hauntings and architecture—both old and new tales. …and, if that is not enough, wait until you hear about an upcoming lecture series and who you will meet at the James B. Recchie Design & Preservation Awards Program in October. For more information and tickets, contact us @ columbuslandmarks.org

A new addition on the tour is a downtown information center and “marketplace” of vendors from the Pearl Market. At this stop, you will find information and displays of the strategic planning process for downtown’s future, information from Columbus Landmarks Foundation, the Downtown Residents Association of Columbus, Experience Columbus, and others. 2010 Downtown Columbus Strategic Plan Working with the City of Columbus and the CDDC, the planning team from MSI Design has drafted a plan that identifies catalytic projects, new policies and outlines a robust implementation strategy. The plan will also establish a framework for regular updates to ensure that it remains current and responsive to the changing needs of downtown Columbus. Three public meetings were conducted to gain feedback and led up to the City Council adoption process. Pearl Alley Mini Marketplace To tantalize and satisfy your taste buds and to show you how we bring the farm to the city, Pearl Alley vendors will be selling their treats and wares. From Indian food and homemade ice cream to jewelry and pet treats, we hope you will enjoy this opportunity to shop local.
