Location & Geography Strewn across the Indian Ocean in a double chain of twenty-six atolls filled with hundreds of small tropical islands lies one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world: The Maldives. The small island nation is made up of about 1,190 coral islands formed around natural ring-like atolls just across the equator and covers over 90,000 square kilometers directly south of India and Sri Lanka. Known the world over for its white sandy beaches and breathtaking underwater beauty, each atoll of the Maldives is made of coral reefs encircling turquoise lagoons. These reefs are one of the biggest attractions the country has as they are teeming with countless species of marine creatures and underwater coral gardens. Each atoll has approximately 20 to 60 islands of which only a handful are inhabited. However, there are a few islands that consist of one large, isolated island. Out of the thousand or so islands, only 187 are inhabited while the other islands are used entirely for economic purposes; tourism, fishing and agriculture being the leading economic industries in the country. The Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sealevel. The country is at constant risk from sea-level rise and erosion due to global warming and other environmental factors. Over the years many of the smaller islets in the country have been reported to have disappeared under the sea.

While coconut palms make up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct difference in the types of plants found in the inhabited and uninhabited islands. Inhabited islands usually have small groves of banana, papaya, drumstick and citrus trees, breadfruit trees and coconut palms. In the uninhabited islands you are more likely to find various types of bushes and mangroves along the beach as well as the ever present coconut trees. Marshy areas and even small lakes can be found on some islands in Maldives. The temperature of Maldives ranges between 24 and 33°C (75.2 and 91.4 °F) throughout the year. The country experiences two seasons: the dry season associated with the winter northeast monsoon and the rainy season brought by the summer southwest monsoon. However, due to global warming, the monsoons have become less predictable each year. Suffice to say that the weather now is warm and sunny most of the year, with only the occasional rainy days regardless of which monsoon it is. Maldives managed to remain largely unknown to tourists until the early 1970s but has now become one of the top tourist destinations in the world. The tourism industry is credited with fostering the overall economic growth of the country and now the industry accounts for about 23% of the country’s GDP and more than 60% of the Maldives’ foreign exchange receipts.

Guesthouse Industry of Maldives A Short History

G

uesthouses played a key role in the development of the Maldives’ tourism industry when it was in its infancy back in the 1970s. Even though there clearly was a demand for guesthouses while the tourist resorts were being developed, all guesthouses were abruptly and inexplicably shutdown by the Government in May 1984. No reason was stated for the move, but it was apparent the Government wanted to focus on developing only the resorts of the Maldives at the time. The situation remained unchanged until the guesthouse industry got another slight push in 2008 when amendments brought to the Tourism Act in January 2008 brought up the fact that operating guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives was actually allowed. However, the avenues for actually implementing such a venture remained effectively blocked since no regulations about establishing and operating guesthouses were ever revealed. Later, in July the same year, the issue was raised again in the People’s Majlis and led to the passing of a resolution that allowed the operation of guesthouse services in inhabited islands of the Maldives. Yet again, even though the resolution was passed by a Majlis majority, there were still no regulations that governed its implementation and all avenues for running guesthouses in the inhabited islands of the Maldives remained shut. Finally, in the final months of 2009, permission to operate guesthouses in inhabited islands was granted and the proposed regulations to implement such endeavors approved. Once in the clear, the industry finally was off to a good start despite the rocky beginnings and by the end of 2010 there were 479 beds in 23 guesthouses in Maldives. In subsequent years, guesthouses across the Maldives increased at the rate of two to three guesthouses every month. As of now there are around 2800 beds in 220 guesthouses in over 60 inhabited islands of the Maldives, with new ones popping up all over the country every month. The guesthouse industry in the Maldives is now one of the most successful and fastest growing industries in the country and the future looks very bright for everyone involved.

Maldivian Culture

A

heavy influence from various countries in the region is apparent in the culture of Maldives. This is no surprise as the island nation is located directly in the path of the trading route of the Indian Ocean and have had direct contact with visitors and settlers from many different customs and traditions from various neighboring countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Persia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Africa throughout history. Over the years Maldivians have assimilated and adopted many aspects from these contacts and created a unique cultural identity for themselves that is unlike any other. Today, you can find varying levels of these influences in all aspects of the Maldivian culture, language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes. Maldivians are a mixed-race and differ greatly in looks even from one atoll to the next. The Maldivian language,

called Dhivehi, is used only in the Maldives but also differs in dialect in some of the atolls, especially in the south of Maldives. Still, it is considered an Indo-European language related to Singhala, the language spoken in Sri Lanka. This explains why many Dhivehi words are very similar to their Singhala counterparts. Over the years a lot of Hindi, Arabic and even English words have also been assimilated into the Dhivehi language. Tourists arriving in Maldives will have no problem with communication as the majority of Maldivians can speak and understand English very well. The Maldives is declared a 100% Muslim country and religion plays a very important role in all aspects of the average Maldivian’s life, but the mixing of cultures is very much evident in almost all forms of Maldivian arts. For example, the local music and dance combination known

Guesthouses of Maldives

12

as bodu-beru (literally translated to as “Big Drum”) is almost indistinguishable from African drumming and tribal dancing. Maldivian sail boats, or dhoni, have a particular look that is uniquely Maldivian but the influence of Arabian dhows and Persian sea-faring vessels are clearly felt in the overall design. Religious festivals and celebrations, such as the two Islamic Eid festivals, are celebrated all over the country and activities that take place differ greatly from region to region despite a common overall theme. Handicrafts, fine arts and architecture, mostly seen in the fine intricate details on wooden beams in holy sites such as mosques, is similar to what is found in Southeast Asian countries. However, some designs, such as the geometric and swirling designs used in mat weaving and the embroidery of the neckline of women’s traditional

dresses and ornaments are unique to Maldives. The beautiful lacquer-work, usually painted in black, red and yellow, is a dying art form in the country but efforts are being made to revitalize such skills and keep them from dying out. Many of these works of art, including miniature dhonis and lacquer-work can be found in souvenir shops at resorts and in Male’ for sale.

Travelling around the Maldives

A

s a guest, your point of entry to Maldives will most likely be the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) in the island of Hulhule. Once you arrive, depending on the plans you have made, you are going to have to catch a boat or seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As the Maldives is a country of more than 1,190 islands and islets divided into 26 atolls encompassing a territory of over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (34,749 sq mi), the possible modes of transport are by sea and air. All resorts will already have your sea or air transfer ready when you arrive at the airport and you will most likely be using a speedboat transfer to the resort if the resort is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the more distant atolls, you will most likely get to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your

destination in the one of the seaplanes. Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. The other international airports are Gan International Airport in Addu atoll Gan, Hanimaadhoo International Airport in Haa Dhaalu atoll Hanimaadhoo, and Villa International Airport in Alifu Dhaalu atoll Maamagili. Then there are the six domestic airports. They are Dharavandhoo Airport in Baa atoll Dharavandhoo, Fuvahmulah Airport in Gnaviyani atoll Fuvahmulah, Kaadehdhoo Airport in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Kaadehdhoo, Kahdhoo Airport in Laamu atoll Kahdhoo, Kooddoo Airport in Gaafu Alifu atoll Kooddoo, and Thimarafushi Airport in Thaa atoll Thimarafushi. However, it should be noted that the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country.

If you want to start your journey through Maldives from the Capital City of Male’, then you can catch a dhoni ride from the airport to Male’ for MVR10. It is about a five-minute boat ride and you’ll have no problem finding a dhoni as the ferry service operates all through the day and there’s one available every few minutes. Male’ is a small island but almost everyone uses a vehicle to get around. If you opt to walk, no point in Male’ should be more than 15-minutes walking distance from wherever you are; shorter if you do a brisk walk and don’t stop to sightsee. As soon as you arrive in Male’ you’ll notice that there are plenty of taxis available ready to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Taxi fares vary from time to time, but on average taxi drivers will charge you about MVR30 per trip, even if your destination happens to be just a block away. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel, or safari cruise, then airport representative or resort staff will pick you up upon arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer. Once again, you will have the option of using a speedboat, seaplane, or dhoni. Resorts that are located in atolls further away from Male’ or the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport will

most likely use seaplane transfers for their guests. It’s faster and gives the guests a chance to see some of the beautiful islands and resorts of the Maldives from the air before arriving at their own resorts. The seaplanes travel at relatively low altitudes compared to the bigger planes and allows you to get a closer aerial view of the beauty of the Maldives. In contrast, the speedboat service is a different kind of adventure altogether. Depending on the weather, you could be in for a smooth, uneventful ride (unless you encounter a school of dolphins playing in the water or showing off) or a rough and fun time as the speedboat tackles the blue waters while you enjoy the sun on your face and the wind through your hair. Then there’s the dhoni, the name given to any of the various designs of local seafaring vessels. It offers a slower and gentler ride compared to the speedboat, but is no less of an experience. Island Hopping is one of the excursions often organized by Maldivian resorts that allows tourists to visit a few inhabited islands near the resorts. This is another option available to tourists if you feel like catching a taste of what most of the inhabited islands are like. These trips are organized by the resort itself and the mode of transport varies from dhonis to speedboats.

Activities & Excursions: The Many Ways to Get the Best of your Stay in Maldives

A stay in the beautiful Maldives would be incomplete without enjoying at least a few of the fantastic excursions available. With so many places to see and so much to do, you’d be hard pressed to experience and enjoy everything. So here’s a handy guide to help you decide what activities you can fit into your holiday.

Cruise Boats Often said to be the best way to enjoy the Maldives if you are a diver, a cruise boat not only offers you the opportunity to explore and visit a lot of the islands of the Maldives, it also gives you the chance to dive some of the best dive sites all across the Maldives. That’s not all; being on one of the various sizes of the beautiful luxury liveaboards of Maldives means you get to go on fishing trips too! Diving The unmatched beauty of the Maldives marine world is a unique experience that everyone must try at least once in their life. Photos and videos really can’t do justice and enjoying it first-hand will definitely be one of the highlights of any stay in Maldives. Luckily, all resorts and the majority of the liveaboards that operate here come with well-equipped dive centers, staffed by multilingual and experienced professionals. Almost all dive centers in Maldives now offer underwater cameras for rent or purchase, allowing you to take a video of your dive with you when you go back to show off to your friends and family.

Snorkeling Snorkeling is a good alternative to diving for those who do not want to go through the hassle of learning to dive and getting familiar with the equipment. Just put on a snorkel and you’re good to go. Maldives lagoons are so clear and abundant with rich marine life that even a short snorkeling trip just a few feet away from the beach over the house reef will yield unbelievable wonders and sights to enjoy.

Water Sports Every tourist resort in the Maldives has a Water Sports Center and the same is true for almost every island that operates guesthouses in the Maldives. These Centers offer various activities for the guests but the basic activities available usually are snorkeling, windsurfing, banana riding, kayaking, and jetskiing. However, some Water Sports Centers also offer the more thrilling catamaran sailing, para-sailing, kite-surfing and even Flyboards (Iron Man-style water jet-pack) and the Subwing (the personal submarine that lets you “fly” through the water) are available.

Surfing Although a relatively new addition to the Maldives experience compared to diving and snorkeling, the Maldives now boasts some of the best surf spots in the world and attracts even world famous surfers to its surf breaks. Maldives has even hosted the renowned O’Neil Deep Blue competition for two consecutive years. The best time for surfing in the Maldives is said to be from April to October but there are surf spots all across the Maldives that can offer excellent experiences to everyone from beginners to professionals all throughout the year. The surf generally ranges in size from 3 to 8 feet although bigger ones are experienced occasionally.

Island Hopping This is a real treat! Basically, it’s a bundledpackage that gives you the chance to enjoy several excursions in one! The ‘island-hopping’ excursion usually takes you to another resort, an uninhabited island and an inhabited island all in a day! If getting a small taste of what another Maldivian resort is like isn’t enough, consider that you will get the chance to go snorkeling in the clear waters of a deserted island and relax at the end of the trip by enjoying a beach barbecue under the stars. You will also be able to visit a local inhabited island to experience what a typical Maldivian island looks like. Please be advised that women are requested to bring clothes that cover everything between shoulders and knees when entering inhabited islands. Seaplane Tours The seaplane companies operating in the Maldives offer spectacular flights over the atolls; perfect for photo trips or sight-seeing. Enjoy the aerial view of the beautiful islands of the Maldives as the seaplanes fly low to give you the best views from the air as possible.

Sunset & Dolphin Cruise One of the most popular excursions in any Maldives resort or guesthouse. Take the chance to enjoy stunning Maldivian sunset out on the high seas with a glass of sparkling wine. Don’t forget to take your cameras, as there’s always a chance to bump into some friendly dolphins who are more than willing to put on a show for you. Big Game Fishing For the adventurous types who want a chance to tell the tale of landing the big one! Set out early in the morning and catch an unforgettable Maldivian sunrise while the crew of the boat prepares an energetic breakfast that will keep your energy levels high for the upcoming battle. Then prepare for an epic struggle to land one of the biggest game fish in Maldivian waters; marlins or swordfish.

Male’ Tour Available as a full-day or half-day trip, the Male’ Tour allows tourists to experience the hustle and bustle of the world’s most densely populated capital city. At the Male’ jetty you will be handed over to an external local tour guide who will guide you through the history, politics and culture of this unique country. In Male’ you have several places worth seeing and visiting, such as the National Museum, the local fish market, fruit & vegetable market, and the Sultan Park. You can finish off the tour by visiting some of the several souvenir shops in the area. As when visiting any inhabited island of the Maldives, tourists visiting Male’ are advised to dress modestly and cover themselves properly.

Whale Submarine Trip Hold on to your hats, folks. We’ve kept one of the best for last. The world’s biggest passenger submarine is available to take you down to the beautiful underwater paradise of the Maldives. A truly unique experience not to be missed and highly recommended for every tourist to the Maldives. What makes this submarine trip unique is not that you get to see many of the fantastic marine creatures that inhabit the Maldivian sea up close, but the fact that the operators of the trip have arranged an underwater circus for the passengers to enjoy as they gaze out through the portholes of the submarine. Watch as divers interact with the various marine life around the sub, feeding and playing with them. Gasp in awe as a playful giant moray eel comes out from the reef it calls home to swim and play around with the divers, even letting them pet and feed it. Catching sight of a turtle or shark is also very possible.

Pioneers of Maldives’ Guesthouse Industry

WhiteShell MD, Ahmed Naseer It is fitting that for the very first issue of “Guesthouses of Maldives” magazine, we managed to secure an interview with the man who started the very first guesthouse in the Maldives. Ahmed Naseer, the Managing Director of WhiteShell which now operates a few guesthouses in Maafushi, talks to us about how he got started, his vision for Maafushi, the difficulties he faced initially and the future of the industry.

How did you get started? I recall that the idea came to me during the last months of 2009, when the bill to allow guesthouses to be operated in inhabited islands of the Maldives was submitted to the People’s Majlis. Maafushi is my native island and I had been visiting the island a lot during weekends those days while working in Maldives Monetary Authority. I was swimming near the beach area, a place I always frequent when I am in Maafushi, when I saw the house that was under construction at the corner of the beach and suddenly visualised what it would look like as a guesthouse. Right then and there I decided to get the house. I immediately found out who owned it and, luckily he was a relative, agreed to the rent, MVR 10,000 per month, and signed the contract within a week. The owner had originally planned to rent it out to nurses and teachers, since those were the usual tenants you would find in Maafushi back then. It was a huge risk and I knew that going in. After renting the house, I refurnished it completely, changed the exterior, installed air conditioners and connected the sewage pipes to the central sewerage system that had been installed by Red Crescent in the island. I managed to register the White Shell Beach Inn at the Ministry of Tourism in 2010. It wasn’t just the first guesthouse in Maafushi, it was the first registered guesthouse in any inhabited island of the Maldives. How was the response from friends and the other Maafushi residents initially? I did discuss the venture with friends

and others and almost everyone was skeptical it would actually work. The main obstacles, they felt, were that alcohol would not be allowed in the island and bikinis would be a problem. I’ll have to say the initial reaction wasn’t very positive. However, a childhood friend trusted in my vision and helped me invest in the project. The initial investment was MVR 300,000 but after five years the business is now valued at about MVR 6 or MVR 7 million. We had humble beginnings, started with just four rooms and minimal staff. We made a simple static website and listed it on Agoda and Booking.com since we just wanted to establish an online presence. In hindsight, one of the most important steps we took was listing Maafushi as a destination on online searches, charts and maps. We marketed Maafushi as a tourist destination just like any other Maldivian resort. Even on Agoda and Booking.com Maafushi appears right under Maldives as a separate island (city), rather than under Kaafu Atoll in a separate subcategory. One and half years went by fairly uneventfully and we started a restaurant also. The only reason we managed to survive the first year was due to the restaurant and we invested heavily in it. It was a nice location near the beach and most of the customers were locals. We couldn’t have sustained the business otherwise. Keeping just four rooms full wasn’t that difficult at the time, but we eventually talked to the neighbours who lived in the two-bedroom house next door, negotiated a deal and got that

house too. We converted the two rooms it had into guest rooms and the empty area into a larger restaurant and kitchen area. Later, during the second year, we rented the third house located next to it too. The whole White Shell Beach Inn area is actually three houses combined, a total of 10 rooms. I think it wasn’t until 2011 that other guesthouses started popping up and although there are larger and more luxurious guesthouses in Maafushi now, I think if you compare the profit per room it is still better to have single storey, ‘cottage’ style guest houses, since we can keep the running costs lower than the other, bigger guesthouses. Also, from the start, my idea was to make this a community effort so everyone in Maafushi could share in the profits and achieve inclusive development. As such, even from the very beginning, we outsourced the laundry service to another local household. This provided them with a good, steady income just by doing the laundry for our guesthouse. Similarly, we outsourced the speed boat service to another local party. I say “speed boat” but when he started out it was just a small, cramped dinghy but we used that to bring tourists here from the Airport anyway. Now, the man who started out with a tiny, dirty dinghy, he now owns about six speed boats. What I am saying is that we could have bought a small dinghy ourselves back then, but that wasn’t the plan. We wanted everyone to contribute to the industry and become stakeholders in it so they could all reap the benefits. Even the furniture and furnishings in

Guesthouses of Maldives

26

the guesthouse are all locally designed and crafted. Even the staff, wherever possible, we’ve employed locals. The only expatriates we’ve hired are for those jobs that we were unable to find suitable local talent. We focused a lot on that system and everyone who followed were smart enough to adopt it, and I think that’s one of the biggest reasons Maafushi has become such a huge success. Did you ever have plans to work in the tourism industry? I didn’t really plan to manage a guesthouse specifically. I’m an economist by profession and I’ve always been interested in the tourism industry as it is the main industry in the Maldives. My thinking has always been very tourism-oriented so if I was to start a business I always knew it would be tourism related somehow. That’s how it is but I would not say that I ever had any plans to become a resort or guesthouse owner until the day when I actually went ahead and rented a house with the intention of turning it into a guesthouse. How do you think Maafushi has changed over the last few years? I think most of the guesthouse owners in Maafushi, even now to some extent, are just concentrating on establishing and growing their businesses and so Maafushi is changing very rapidly. At first everyone in Maafushi concentrated on improving room quality and increasing room capacity as there were only a few rooms available back then so it wasn’t possible to bring a big Chinese group to stay here. Now there are 34 guesthouses, that’s around 300 rooms, so now gradually the focus is shifting to improving other facilities, like the restaurant services, excursions and water sports. Other changes include the mentality and attitude of Maafushi residents towards the guesthouse industry. Like in every community, we too had some people who had very conservative outlooks and concerns towards hosting tourism related activities in the island. For example, back when tourists first arrived in Maafushi there were those who would get really angry if they saw someone wearing even a slightly revealing dress -- not even a bikini -- walking about in the island. They would harass us a lot and it was a huge annoyance to deal with them every day. Now, that has

changed. I think it’s because the people of Maafushi have finally accepted it and changed their frame of mind. I like to believe that they’ve accepted that tourists aren’t visiting their island now, but are now living in a tourist resort called Maafushi! They’ve come to realise how important the industry is and how beneficial it is for the economy. Out of the 34 guesthouses, only few guesthouses belong to people who aren’t from Maafushi. So everybody has an interest in protecting this industry. Do you think the guesthouse industry is a threat to the resort industry? I don’t think we are in direct competition with resorts. I feel that the guesthouse industry actually complements the resort industry. Many of the guests who arrive here usually come from other resorts. They spend a few days

at a resort, a few days with us and then heads off to another resort or sometimes Hulhumale’ or a safari on a liveaboard. The guesthouse industry is now a vital part of the whole Maldivian tourism product. Guests get more options to explore and experience. They get the best of everything. If you just stay at a resort or a guesthouse you don’t get to experience everything the country has to offer as a tourist destination. Also, Maafushi is appealing to tourists because we have several guesthouses that offer higher quality accommodation than what you can get at some lower-end resorts, but at a much more affordable price. A lot of the amenities and services are also available here. There’s Free Wi-Fi with high-speed Internet access, HDTV, swimming pools and many more. Plus you can enjoy all the excursions

Guesthouses of Maldives

27

available at resorts and water sports such as jetski, watersking, banana riding and a whole lot of other things... and the rooms are available for just $60 or so! That’s unbelievably attractive to tourists. What do you think is the biggest challenge for the guesthouse industry? Personally, from my experience here at Maafushi, I think the biggest challenge is having to manage and operate a tourism product in an inhabited island, and managing all those issues we face in the local community every day. You have to deal with a lot of unusual obstacles that you wouldn’t face in the average resort due to that. Not everyone is ready to believe that the long-term sustainability of this business depends on many factors; that the industry is very vulnerable right now. There have already been some

minor scuffles between guesthouses and even blows exchanged. This is very sad, because such incidents will have far-reaching consequences, maybe even beyond Maafushi. I had to personally intervene and settle many problems. The reason I have to do this is because so far most of the guesthouse operators respect me and shares the vision I have for Maafushi. The entire future of this multimillion dollar business depends on what we do here right now, so we have to protect it. For instance, the issue of illegal drugs, alcohol, and violence can be a problem in Maafushi just like in any inhabited island in the country. We all have to be extra cautious here in Maafushi. I have personally waited at the jetty to search the bags of tourists returning to Maafushi after spending New Year at nearby resorts to ensure they did not bring back any alcohol with

them. That is how far you have to go to protect your investments and ensure the business remains sustainable. However, as the number of guesthouses grow, and as new investors from outside Maafushi starts operations, not all will share our vision for the island, and not all will have the kind of love we have for our island. Some of them might not see a problem in secretly selling alcohol in their guesthouses. Like with everything, this industry too has the chance of attracting seedier elements. If we don’t carefully monitor and nurture this industry, there’s a possibility it could turn into something else entirely. Not everyone shares my views on this, and my vision to promote a more cultural tourism isn’t exactly the way Maafushi is heading. It is evolving faster and the changes are completely unpredictable, but like I said before, it can still be

Guesthouses of Maldives

28

sustainable if we keep our eyes open and don’t allow the negative elements such as alcohol and sex tourism to take a foothold here. When we first started, everybody felt operating a guesthouse would be impossible without alcohol, but now, after the events of the last ‘New Year’, we have been able to prove everybody wrong. We organised a huge party at the beach for new year, complete with a fireworks show, dinner, barbecue, music and dancing. We were able to attract over 600 guests for the event and it was packed. Tourists came from everywhere and they ate, danced, had fun and celebrated the new year, with no alcohol. So I am very convinced now that local island tourism is here to stay – even without alcohol. The tourists we get aren’t necessarily looking to drink. They are more interested in the excursions and other activities available

here. You can’t take part and enjoy all the fun activities when you’re drunk anyway. Besides, they always have the option of going to nearby resorts if they feel like drinking. How much support have you received from the Government? We actually have very good relations with the Government, most of the guesthouse owners here do. However, I can’t really say that guesthouse industry in Maafushi has been developed with Government’s direct involvement or assistance. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t against us either. Even when we meet government officials every now and then they do make a point of mentioning they aren’t against us. We show them the numbers and they see the results with their own eyes. Plus the revenue we generate is clearly visible in their own reports.

I don’t think anybody has any reason to feel threatened by us. There have been instances where politicians have tried to take credit for the success of Maafushi but, in reality, all the credit for the success of Maafushi goes to the hardworking residents and entrepreneurs of Maafushi.

Situated in the breathtakingly beautiful Baa Atoll, Dharavandhoo is right next to the globally renowned Hanifaru Bay. The atoll has been declared a protected biosphere reserve due to the high level of biodiversity found in the waters in the area and Hanifaru Bay is world-famous among divers for the mantas and whale shark that gather in vast numbers to feed in the plankton-rich waters. The island is surrounded by beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters, so it’s no surprise that the island’s economy is mostly based on tourism related activities. Dharavandhoo Airport, one of the six domestic airports in the Maldives, is also located on this island.

Rasdhoo

Located in Alif Alif Atoll, Rasdhoo is the capital island of the administrative division and has many guesthouses with varying degrees of comfort and amenities available. Among the most well-reviewed islands for guesthouses in the Maldives, Rasdhoo guesthouses are known for being cozy, quiet and very private. One of the major attractions, according to guests who have stayed there, are the local cuisine available at some of the guesthouses. Well worth staying in a few guesthouses just to enjoy the variety. The biggest draw for Rasdhoo is that there are two beautiful picnic islands about five minutes away that is available for guests to enjoy. In addition, Rasdhoo also offers some very good diving and snorkeling options.
