EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome, dear travelers, to the second edition of “Guesthouses Maldives” magazine. What an exciting and eventful time we’ve had since the 2015 edition of our magazine was released almost a year ago. When we started out, most of our time was spent travelling from one island to another, meeting with guesthouse owners and trying to convince them why a magazine listing the available guesthouses in the Maldives was important to the new and emerging industry. The biggest obstacle, of course, was the fact that we were new. At everything. We had no portfolio, we had no past successes to brag about. Basically, we just had a dream and a vision of what could be achieved if everyone in the guesthouse industry worked together. Not surprisingly, it would take more than dreams, visions and words to convince people. More than once we were advised to give up “this foolish endeavor” since many who had tried to do the same before us had failed. Despite the challenges, we published the first edition on time. Gaining the trust of the guesthouse industry of the Maldives was paramount, and the only way to do that was to deliver on the promise we had made to them: bring the guesthouses into contact with the best travel agents from all over the world. The first event we participated in was the Arabian Travel Market held in Dubai on May, 2015. Almost immediately we realized that none of the travel agents had a clue that budget travel was even an option for the Maldives. It was the same at all the travel fairs we participated in during the course of the next few months. It wasn’t until WTM London in November 2015 that we had our first breakthrough: someone actually came looking for information about the “so-called Maldives budget market”. It was at that point we knew things were about to change. A lot has changed since the first edition of Guesthouses Maldives was published. More and more islands in the Maldives have begun to start operating guesthouses and thanks to the links we have cultivated with the network of guesthouse operators in the country, almost everyone in the industry has come to realize and appreciate the worth of a publication like Guesthouse Maldives. Right now the future of the guesthouse industry in the Maldives looks bright, and Guesthouse Maldives will make sure it stays that way.

Renown the world over for its white sandy beaches and breathtaking underwater beauty, each atoll of the Maldives is made of coral reefs encircling turquoise lagoons. These reefs are among the biggest attractions the country has as they are teeming with countless species of marine creatures and underwater coral gardens. Each atoll has approximately 20 to 60 islands of which only a handful are inhabited. However, there are a few atolls that are basically just single, isolated islands. Out of the thousand or so islands, only 187 are inhabited while the other islands are used entirely for economic purposes; tourism, fishing and agriculture being the leading economic industries in the country. The Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sea-level. While coconut palms make up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct 13

GUESTHOUSE INDUSTRY OF MALDIVES A SHORT HISTORY

Guesthouses played a key role in the development of the Maldives' tourism industry when it was in its infancy back in the 1970s. Even though there clearly was a demand for guesthouses while the tourist resorts were being developed, all guesthouses were abruptly and inexplicably shutdown by the Government in May 1984. The situation remained unchanged until 2008, when amendments brought to the Tourism Act in January 2008 revealed that operating guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives wasn't technically prohibited. 16

However, the avenues for actually implementing such a venture remained effectively blocked since regulations on establishing and operating guesthouses were never drafted. Later, in July the same year, the issue was raised again in the People's Majlis and led to the passing of a resolution that allowed the operation of guesthouse services in inhabited islands of the Maldives. Yet again, even though the resolution was passed by a Majlis majority, no laws or regulations were drafted and all avenues for running guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives remained shut. It wasn't until near the end of 2009 that permission to operate guesthouses in 17

inhabited islands was granted and proposed regulations to implement such endeavors was finally approved. For those who had been waiting years to start their guesthouses, the time had finally come and there was no looking back. Despite a rocky start and lots of challenges, the pioneers of the industry strived through and by the end of 2010 there were 479 beds in 23 guesthouses in Maldives. As of now there are around 4000 beds in 300 guesthouses in over 80 inhabited islands of the Maldives. The guesthouse industry in the Maldives is now one of the most successful and fastest growing industries in the country and the future looks very bright for everyone involved.

Over the years Maldivians assimilated a lot of the traditions and beliefs from these contacts and created a unique cultural identity for themselves. Today, you can find varying levels of these influences in all aspects of the Maldivian culture, language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes. Maldivians are a mixed-race and differ greatly in looks, even from one atoll to the next. The Maldivian language, Dhivehi, is used only in the Maldives but also differs in dialect in some of the atolls, especially in the south of Maldives. Dhivehi is considered an Indo-European language related to Singhala, the language 21

spoken in Sri Lanka. However, over the THAA ATOLL years a lot of Hindi, Arabic and even English words have been assimilated into the Dhivehi language. The Maldives is a 100% Muslim country and religion plays a very important role of the average Maldivian's life, but the mixing of cultures is very much evident in almost all forms of Maldivian arts. For example, the local music and dance combination known as bodu-beru (literally translated to as "Big Drum") is almost indistinguishable from African drumming and tribal dancing. geometric and swirling designs used in mat weaving and the embroidery of the neckline of women's traditional dresses and ornaments are unique to Maldives. The beautiful lacquer-work, usually painted in black, red and yellow, is a dying art form in the country but efforts are being made to revitalize interest in the craft. Many of these works of art, including miniature dhonis and lacquer-work can be found in souvenir shops at resorts and in Maleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for sale.

TRAVELLING AROUND THE MALDIVES

If this is your first time in Maldives, your point of entry will most likely be the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) in the island of Hulhule. Depending on the travel plans you’ve made, you’re going to have to catch a boat or seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As a country of more than 1192 islands and islets divided into 20 atolls encompassing a territory of over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (34,749 sq mi), the only possible modes of transport are by sea and air. Resorts will already have your sea or air transfer ready when you arrive at the airport and you’ll most likely be using a speedboat transfer to the resort if it is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the more distant atolls you’ll most likely get to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your destination in one of the seaplanes. 24

Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. Then there are seven domestic airports. However, it should be noted that the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country. Male’ city is 10 minutes away from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport by ferry. In Male’, there are plenty of taxis available to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel, or safari cruise, then airport representative or resort staff will pick you up upon arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer. 25

Resorts located farther away from Male’ will most likely use seaplane transfers for their guests. The seaplanes travel at relatively low altitudes compared to the bigger planes and allows you to get a closer aerial view of the beauty of the Maldives. In contrast, the speedboat service is a different kind of adventure altogether. Depending on the weather, you could be in for a smooth or a rough and fun time as the speedboat tackles the blue waters while you enjoy the sun on your face and the wind through your hair. Then there’s the dhoni, the name given to any of the various designs of local seafaring vessels. It offers a slower and gentler ride compared to the speedboat, but is no less of an experience.

Although a relatively new addition to the Maldives experience compared to diving and snorkeling, the Maldives now boasts some of the best surf spots in the world and attracts even world famous surfers to its surf breaks. The best time for surfing in the Maldives is said to be from April to

October but there are surf spots all across the Maldives that can offer excellent experiences to everyone from beginners to professionals all throughout the year. The surf generally ranges in size from 3 to 8 feet although bigger ones are experienced occasionally.

The worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest passenger submarine is available to take you down to the beautiful underwater paradise of the Maldives. A truly unique experience not to be missed and highly recommended for every tourist to the Maldives. What makes this submarine trip unique is not that you get to see many of the fantastic marine creatures that inhabit the Maldivian sea up close, but the fact that the operatorsof the trip have arranged an

underwater circus for the passengers to enjoy as they gaze out through the portholes of the submarine. Watch as divers interact with the various marine life around the sub, feeding and playing with them. Gasp in awe as a playful giant moray eel comes out from the reef it calls home to swim and play around with the divers, even letting them pet and feed it. SNORKELING Snorkeling is a good alternative to diving for those who do not want to go through the hassle of learning to dive and getting familiar with the equipment. Just put on a snorkel and you’re good to go. Maldives lagoons are so clear and abundant with rich marine life that even a short snorkeling trip just a few feet away from the beach over the house reef will yield unbelievable wonders and sights to enjoy.

WATER SPORTS SUNSET & DOLPHIN CRUISE Every tourist resort in the Maldives has a Water Sports Center and the same is true for almost every island that operates guesthouses in the Maldives. These offer various activities for the guests but the basic activities available usually are snorkeling, windsurfing, banana riding, kayaking, and jetskiing. It may be quite natural for Bodufolhudhoo island in the Maldives archipelago to move for a complete ban on all plastic bags as the native settlement comfortably sits amidst one of the most tourist resort concentrated atolls. “We set the plan in motion in January,” says Mohamed Ali, a resident of Bodufolhudhoo who also operates a guesthouse in the island. He said that the idea for a plastic bag-free society was borne out of a renewed sense of the importance of environmental conservation awareness ushered in by the guesthouse tourism industry. 35

BODUFOLHUDHOO: FIRST ISLAND TO BAN SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS Such a large scale undertaking will obviously take time but the island council is trying to approach the issue through a step-by-step regulation, hoping Bodufolhudhoo will attain plastic bag-free status within a year. “Our hopes are high, and we are determined that we can ban all plastic bags by April,” Council Director Ahmed Fayaz said. The critical role played by ecological sustainability in modern urban hospitality was underlined when budget travel became possible, and Maldives’ luxury tourism became affordable to everyone.

“There is a rising trend of environmental sensitivity among locals. For instance, now you can hardly find any litter strewn around our harbor,” a young resident tells Guesthouses Maldives. The decision to impose a plastic bag ban in 2016 came last December when the Council, at a general meeting, put forth a resolution initiated by Guesthouses Maldives with help from some of the businessmen from the island. Council President Sujau Adam told Guesthouses Maldives that the historic decision will go a

long way towards protecting reefs -- a key natural feature that has attracted millions of scuba divers and snorkelers to Maldivesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pristine waters over its half a century of tourism. The beauty and hygiene of public hangouts, such as Bodufolhudhooâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s white sandy beaches and free spirited parks, can also be best maintained through a complete ban on the use of plastic bags. Environmental protection has become one of the foremost concerns of the community when more than half of the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population is forced to use

saline ground water for various purposes -- not to mention erosion which is aggravating the matter when saltwater mixes to create brine which is not fit for drinking or cooking. Though the Council has set April 1 as the deadline for a ban on import of plastic bags to the island, the community can still use ones that are already in circulation. The Council has so far not proposed any legal measures against violators of the regulation but intends to come up with appropriate procedures to ensure that the ban is respected and upheld.

Guest House Maldives will provide the paper bags -- as a replacement of plastic ones -- to Bodufolhudhoo which recently planted more than 5,000 trees as a way of raising environmental awareness among the community situated in the midst of one of the most strategic tourism locations in the country.
