FOREWORD Welcome to the fourth edition of “Guesthouses Maldives” magazine. Another exciting and eventful year has passed and the guesthouse industry in Maldives is thriving and growing well past the most optimistic expectations of stakeholders. Last year, the country welcomed over 1.3 million tourists to its shores with over 40,000 beds representing 130 resorts, 180 liveaboards and 600 guesthouses. The guesthouses in the statistics account for 6,500 beds in over 70 islands across the country. The guesthouse industry is currently estimated to be worth over $200 million and expected to reach half a billion dollar mark in the next 5 years. In addition to distributing the Guesthouses Maldives magazine at the top travel fairs across the world once again this year, we have successfully hosted the second Guesthouses Maldives Conference in September 2017 at the newly built, state-of-the-art, multipurpose conference hall at Paradise Island Resort & Spa. As the Guesthouses Maldives Conference is an annual event dedicated to promoting the guesthouse industry of Maldives, this year it was attended by 200 guesthouses, 20 budget specialized local and international agents, with keynote speeches by industry experts focused on how to improve arrival figures to guesthouses and increase bed capacity numbers. However, as successful as this model for the Guesthouses Maldives Conference has been, we felt that the platform needed to evolve naturally towards its next iteration. Hence, this is the last time the Guesthouses Maldives Conference will be held under the existing concept. Next year the Conference will be rebranded as Guesthouses Maldives Expo, a trade expo that we believe will provide guesthouse industry stakeholders with unprecedented networking opportunities to make powerful new business connections that will help take their own companies and products to the next level. Furthermore, Maldives Getaways collaborated with Air Asia and All H Maldives to launch the very first Maldives Travel Fair in Malaysia. The main purpose of the two-day event was to change the image of Maldives as a luxury destination only accessible to the upper-class market. Several guesthouse properties took part in the Fair and regarded the two-day event as a very successful venture. For this edition of the magazine, our team travelled to more than 70 islands across Maldives, visiting various guesthouses on the islands with our photo/video crew. In total, we took over 10,000 photos and produced more than 70 videos for the sole purpose of promoting Maldives guesthouses on a global scale across social media and online video channels. This was a daunting task, an incredible accomplishment and I would like to thank all the people who helped us, both directly and indirectly, through all the visits to all those islands, and facilitating our stays and photo/video shoots. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MALDIVES?

Strewn across the Indian Ocean in a double chain of twenty-six atolls filled with hundreds of small tropical islands lies one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world: The Maldives. This small island nation is made up of about 1,200 coral islands formed around natural ring-like atolls just across the equator and covers over 90,000 square kilometers directly south of India and Sri Lanka. 14

Renown the world over for its white sandy beaches and breathtaking underwater beauty, each atoll of the Maldives is made of coral reefs encircling turquoise lagoons. These reefs are among the biggest attractions the country has as they are teeming with countless species of marine creatures and underwater coral gardens. Each atoll has approximately 20 to 60 islands of which only a handful are inhabited. However, there are a few atolls that are basically just single, isolated islands. Out of the thousand or so islands, only 187 are inhabited while the other islands are used entirely for economic purposes; tourism, fishing and agriculture being the leading economic industries in the country. The Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sea-level. While coconut palms make up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct difference in the 15
types of plants found in the inhabited and uninhabited islands. Inhabited islands usually have small groves of banana, papaya, drumstick, citrus, breadfruit trees and coconut palms. In the uninhabited islands you are more likely to find various types of bushes and mangroves along the beach as well as the ever present coconut trees. Marshy areas and even small to medium-sized lakes can be found on some islands. The temperature of Maldives ranges between 24 and 33°C (75.2 and 91.4 °F) throughout the year. The country experiences two seasons: the dry season associated with the winter northeast monsoon and the rainy season brought by the summer southwest monsoon. However, due to global warming, the monsoons have become less predictable each year. Suffice to say that the weather now is warm and sunny most of the year, with only the occasional rainy days regardless of which monsoon it is.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GUESTHOUSE INDUSTRY

Guesthouses played a key role in the development of the Maldives’ tourism industry when it was in its infancy back in the 1970s. Even though there clearly was a demand for guesthouses while the tourist resorts were being developed, all guesthouses were abruptly and inexplicably shutdown by the Government in May 1984. The situation remained unchanged until 2008, when amendments brought to the Tourism Act in January 2008 revealed that operating guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives wasn’t technically prohibited. 18
However, the avenues for actually implementing such a venture remained effectively blocked since regulations on establishing and operating guesthouses were never drafted. Later, in July the same year, the issue was raised again in the People’s Majlis and led to the passing of a resolution that allowed the operation of guesthouse services in inhabited islands of the Maldives. Yet again, even though the resolution was passed by a Majlis majority, no laws or regulations were drafted and all avenues for running guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives remained shut. It wasn’t until near the end of 2009 that permission to operate guesthouses 19
in inhabited islands was granted and proposed regulations to implement such endeavors was finally approved. For those who had been waiting years to start their guesthouses, the time had finally come and there was no looking back. Despite a rocky start and lots of challenges, the pioneers of the industry strived through and by the end of 2010 there were 479 beds in 23 guesthouses in Maldives. As of now there are around 4000 beds in 300 guesthouses in over 80 inhabited islands of the Maldives. The guesthouse industry in the Maldives is now one of the most successful and fastest growing industries in the country and the future looks very bright for everyone involved.
CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE MALDIVES

A strong influence from various countries across the region is apparent in the culture of Maldives. No surprise as the island nation is located directly in the trading route of the Indian Ocean and have had contact with visitors and settlers from many different customs and traditions from various neighbouring countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Persia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Africa throughout history. 22
Over the years Maldivians assimilated a lot of the traditions and beliefs from these contacts and created a unique cultural identity for themselves. Today, you can find varying levels of these influences in all aspects of the Maldivian culture, language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes. Maldivians are a mixed-race and differ greatly in looks, even from one atoll to the next. The Maldivian language, Dhivehi, is used only in the Maldives but also differs in dialect in some of the atolls, especially in the south of Maldives. Dhivehi is considered an Indo-European language related to Singhala, the language 23
spoken in Sri Lanka. However, over the years a lot of Hindi, Arabic and even English words have been assimilated into the Dhivehi language. The Maldives is a 100% Muslim country and religion plays a very important role of the average Maldivian’s life, but the mixing of cultures is very much evident in almost all forms of Maldivian arts. For example, the local music and dance combination known as bodu-beru (literally translated to as “Big Drum�) is almost indistinguishable from African drumming and tribal dancing. Maldivian sail boats, or dhoni, have a particular look

that is uniquely Maldivian but the influence of Arabian dhows and Persian sea-faring vessels are clearly felt in the overall design. Religious festivals and celebrations, such as the two Islamic Eid festivals, are celebrated all over the country and activities that take place differ greatly from region to region despite a common overall theme. Handicrafts, fine arts and architecture, mostly seen in the fine intricate details on wooden beams in holy places such as mosques, is similar to what is found in Southeast Asian countries. However, some designs, such as the
geometric and swirling designs used in mat weaving and the embroidery of the neckline of women’s traditional dresses and ornaments are unique to Maldives. The beautiful lacquer-work, usually painted in black, red and yellow, is a dying art form in the country but efforts are being made to revitalize interest in the craft. Many of these works of art, including miniature dhonis and lacquerwork can be found in souvenir shops at resorts and in Male’ for sale.

GETTING AROUND IN THE MALDIVES

If this is your first time in Maldives, your point of entry will most likely be the Velana International Airport (VIA) in the island of Hulhule. Depending on the travel plans you’ve made, you’re going to have to catch a boat or seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As a country of more than 1192 islands and islets divided into 20 atolls encompassing a territory of over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (34,749 sq mi), the only possible modes of transport are by sea and air. Resorts will already have your sea or air transfer ready when you arrive at the airport and you’ll most likely be using a speedboat transfer to the resort if it is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the more distant atolls you’ll most likely get to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your destination in one of the seaplanes. 26
Velana International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. Then there are seven domestic airports. However, it should be noted that the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country. Male’ city is 10 minutes away from Velana International Airport by ferry. In Male’, there are plenty of taxis available to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel, or safari cruise, then airport representative or resort staff will pick you up upon arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer. 27
Resorts located farther away from Male’ will most likely use seaplane transfers for their guests. The seaplanes travel at relatively low altitudes compared to the bigger planes and allows you to get a closer aerial view of the beauty of the Maldives. In contrast, the speedboat service is a different kind of adventure altogether. Depending on the weather, you could be in for a smooth or a rough and fun time as the speedboat tackles the blue waters while you enjoy the sun on your face and the wind through your hair. Then there’s the dhoni, the name given to any of the various designs of local seafaring vessels. It offers a slower and gentler ride compared to the speedboat, but is no less of an experience.

With so many places to see and so much to do, you’d be hard- pressed to enjoy everything, so here’s a small guide to help you decide what activities you can fit into your holiday. 30

The unmatched beauty of the Maldives marine world is a unique experience that everyone must try at least once in their life. Luckily, all resorts and the majority of the liveaboards that operate here come with well - equipped dive centers, staffed by multilingual and experienced professionals.
Almost all dive centers in Maldives now offer underwater cameras for rent or purchase, allowing you to take a video of your dive with you when you go back to show off to your friends and family.

Although a relatively new addition to the Maldives experience compared to diving and snorkelling, the Maldives now boasts some of the best surf spots in the world and attracts even world famous surfers to its surf breaks. The best time for surfing in the Maldives is said
to be from April to October but there are surf spots all across the Maldives that can offer excellent experiences to everyone from beginners to professionals all throughout the year. The surf generally ranges in size from 3 to 8 feet although bigger ones are experienced occasionally.

Basically, it’s a bundled package that gives you the chance to enjoy several excursions in one! The ‘island-hopping’ excursion usually takes you to another resort, an uninhabited island and an inhabited island all in a day! If getting a small taste of what another Maldivian resort is like isn’t enough, consider that you will get the chance to go snorkelling in the clear waters of a deserted island and relax at the end of the trip by enjoying a beach BBQ under the stars. You will also be able to visit a local inhabited island to experience what a typical Maldivian island looks like.

For the adventurous types who want a chance to tell the tale of landing the big one! Set out early in the morning and catch an unforgettable Maldivian sunrise while the crew of the boat prepares an energetic breakfast that will keep your energy levels high for the upcoming battle. Then prepare for an epic struggle to land one of the biggest game fish in Maldivian waters; marlins or swordfish.
Available as a full-day or half-day trip, the Male’ Tour allows tourists to experience the hustle and bustle of the world’s most densely populated capital city. At the Male’ jetty you will be handed over to an external local tour guide who will guide you through the history, politics and culture of this unique country. In Male’ you have several places worth seeing and visiting, such as the National Museum, the local fish market, fruit & vegetable market, and the Sultan Park. You can finish off the tour by visiting some of the several souvenir shops in the area.
Often said to be the best way to enjoy the Maldives if you are a diver, a cruise boat not only offers you the opportunity to explore and visit a lot of the islands of the Maldives, it also gives you the chance to dive some of the best dive sites all across the Maldives. That’s not all; being on one of the various sizes of the beautiful luxury liveaboards of Maldives means you get to go on fishing trips too!

The world’s biggest passenger submarine is available to take you down to the beautiful underwater paradise of the Maldives. A truly unique experience not to be missed and highly recommended for every tourist to the Maldives. What makes this submarine trip unique is not that you get to see many of the fantastic marine creatures that inhabit the Maldivian sea up close, but the fact that the operators of the trip have arranged an underwater circus for the passengers to enjoy as they gaze out through the
portholes of the submarine. Watch as divers interact with the various marine life around the sub, feeding and playing with them. Gasp in awe as a playful giant moray eel comes out from the reef it calls home to swim and play around with the divers, even letting them pet and feed it. Catching sight of a turtle or shark is also very possible.

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good alternative to diving for those who do not want to go through the hassle of learning to dive and getting familiar with the equipment. Just put on a snorkel and you’re good to go. Maldives lagoons are so clear and abundant with rich marine life that even a short snorkelling trip just a few feet away from the beach over the house reef will yield unbelievable wonders and sights to enjoy.

WATER SPORTS SUNSET & DOLPHIN CRUISE Every tourist resort in the Maldives has a Water Sports Center and the same is true for almost every island that operates guesthouses in the Maldives. These offer various activities for the guests but the basic activities available usually are snorkelling, windsurfing, banana riding, kayaking, and jet skiing. However, some Water Sports Centers also offer the more thrilling catamaran sailing, parasailing, kite-surfing and even Flyboards (Iron Manstyle water jet-pack) and the Subwing (the personal submarine that lets you “fly” through the water.
Take the chance to enjoy stunning Maldivian sunset out on the high seas with a glass of sparkling wine and dolphins to guide your way. Don’t forget to take your cameras, as there’s always a chance to bump into some friendly dolphins who are more than willing to put on a show for you.

FULIDHOO ISLAND Fulidhoo is known far and wide as being one of the most beautiful inhabited islands of the Maldives, the guesthouses in Fulidhoo offers everything that the resorts of the Maldives is famous for but at a much more affordable price. The island is surrounded by a large white sandy beach and the diversity of marine life you’ll meet even during a short snorkelling excursion in the surrounding turquoise lagoon is mind-bending!

Addu City (also known as Seenu Atoll) consists of several interconnected islands of the southernmost atoll of the archipelago. The second-largest urban area in Maldives in terms of population, Addu City has 6 districts (each district an island) that are inhabited. They are Hithadhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. Addu City has several guesthouses that offer a variety of services and unique excursions that you will not be able to get in any other island in Maldives because of the comparatively large landmass and unique geography.
A relatively obscure little island located in North Ari Atoll, Bodufolhudhoo got some time in the spotlight recently after becoming the first island in Maldives to ban single use plastic bags. The island has more than five guesthouses (with more on the way) and a fully equipped dive center catering to tourists. During the 1990s the island was used as a helicopter base by Hummingbird helicopter service and the helipad used by the company still exists. The bikini beach area is located on the sunset side of the beach and is another major attraction for visitors.

Among the most populated islands in Alif Dhaal Atoll, Dhangethi is well-known for its cultural heritage, including traditional handicraft and carpentry. To cater to the flourishing guesthouses industry, various complementary services such as water sports facilities, scuba diving center and speedboat rental services for guest excursions has also cropped up on the island. Curious about the statue of a pot (known as a ‘runbaa’ by locals) at the entrance of the island? Be sure to ask locals about the local folk story behind it. It is an interesting legend.

DHARAVANDHOO DHIFFUSHI ISLAND ISLAND Home to one of the several domestic airports located around Maldives, Dharavandhoo is known as the hub of local tourism in Baa Atoll. As such, the island’s economy focuses mainly on tourism related activities, and offers several guesthouses and various excursions designed to get the most out of your stay in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Maldives. One of the major attractions of the island is its close proximity to Hanifaru Bay, which has become world famous as one of the best places in the world to see manta rays and whale sharks up close.
Located almost a stone throw away from Meeru Island Resort & Spa, Dhiffushi isn’t a newcomer to the guesthouse scene. The island has several well-known guesthouses including two large hotels that has been in operation for the last three years. Some of the major attractions of the island are the beautiful bikini beach area that visitors love and the clear turquoise lagoon that’s perfect for snorkelling and other types of water sports.
DHIGURAH ISLAND Dhigurah, (meaning long island) is in Alifu Dhaal atoll, about 20 minutes by plane from the capital, Male’. The island is narrow but 3 km in length which is considered to be a reasonably long island in the Maldives. With more than 3 km of natural white sandy beach, it is also considered to be a beautiful inhabited island. The population of around 600 is concentrated on a small area in the north of the island and the rest is mostly for fruit and vegetable gardening and natural vegetation.

Many families on Feridhoo and in neighboring islands claim to be able to trace their lineage to those two African ancestors. One of the more recent additions to the list of guesthouse islands in Maldives, Gaafaru is located just outside the actual Kaafu Atoll and is the only island in the small natural atoll known also as Gaafaru. The island’s reef is regarded as a dangerous one by seafarers and has claimed many vessels throughout history. Visitors interested in snorkelling and diving will have no trouble finding many adventure excursions based around these wrecks. Other than diving, the island is popular among those looking for big game fishing excursions.
Gan is one of the inhabited islands of Haddhunmathi Atoll, administrative code Laamu and the proposed capital for the Mathi-Dhekunu Province of the Maldives. Gan is the longest island of the Maldives. It is divided in wards, the northernmost of which is called Thundi in middle Mathimadhu and at the end Mukurimagu. The four islands Gan, Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo which are linked with causeways stretches up to about 18 kilometers in length making up the longest lengthen of dry land in the Maldives.
Hangnaameedhoo is the northernmost island in the Alifu Dhaalu Atoll of Maldives. The island is comparatively large with a medium-sized population, so a large area of the island is vegetation. The island has a huge beach that visitors can explore, including a small stretch of beach on the sunset side known as bikini beach for guests to enjoy. The house reef, accessible from the bikini beach area, is also great for snorkelling and swimming. Some water sports activities are also available from the various guesthouses.
