PEOPLE
Jesper Soerensen
General Manager at SO/ Maldivess We had the pleasure of interviewing Jesper, the General Manager at SO/ Maldives, who spearheaded the resort’s opening on November 1st, 2023, ensuring a fusion of the SO/ brand’s distinctive avant-garde design and luxurious experiences in the Maldives. With an illustrious career across diverse luxury brands worldwide, including urban hotels and exclusive island resorts, Jesper’s expertise in hospitality is poised to elevate SO/ Maldives.
Reflecting on your career journey, what’s been the most pivotal moment or experience that significantly influenced your approach to hospitality leadership, and how has it shaped your vision for SO/ Maldives? Reflecting on my diverse journey across various international brands, I’ve often recalled the invaluable teachings from my mentors. Their wisdom emphasised the virtues of kindness, generosity, and the essence of staying true to oneself - to be original and authentic, all while deeply respecting the mission and vision at hand. The Ennismore SO/ brand and, specifically, SO/ Maldives embodies a compelling brand mission and vision that resonates with me deeply. Collaborating with our team, we embody these principles as fundamental pillars crucial for any thriving enterprise, fostering guest and host satisfaction and an unparalleled experience.
How do you envision incorporating the avant-garde design, playful luxury, and fashion elements of the SO/ brand into the Maldivian setting? SO/ is renowned for its fashion and design collaborations with the creative community, and we’re thrilled to bring this innovative approach to SO/ Maldives. The hotel’s design is bold and structural - drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship and theatricality of contemporary couture. A key example of our avant-garde design is our striking
overwater Arrival Pavilion, which offers our guests a distinctive red-carpet arrival experience and sets the hotel’s aesthetic tone. Design features include clean lines, cool neutrals, natural wood juxtaposed with vibrant accents and a sculptural, red-latticed central staircase. The hotel’s distinctive walkways are framed by billowing fabrics and architectural timber canopies, which make a striking counterpart to the island’s lush natural flora and reference the dramatic styling of high fashion presentations - all of which reflect SO/’s stylish roots. We’ve also collaborated with leading artists and fashion designers to curate a vibrant collection of 80 beachfront and overwater villa collections. Each villa epitomises modern luxury and commands attention with a chic design aesthetic and plush, elegant décor in neutral tones. Spanning one to three bedrooms across eight categories, the villas are purposefully designed for open-plan living, each with a private pool and deck from which guests can enjoy panoramic ocean views of the turquoise waters of the Emboodhoo Lagoon. We’re delivering on SO/’s playful luxury through our diverse restaurant and bar experiences. Specifically, our all-day dining destination, The Citronelle Club, is inspired by the flavours of Asia and features rustic bricks, tiles, and timber panelling to help tell the overall sensory story. Our French Riviera-inspired Lazuli Beach Club is versatile, oozing Cote D’Azur’s charm and elegance. It’s a sophisticated day-to-night beach bar where guests can enjoy sunbathing around the multicoloured mosaic pool, sampling Mediterranean
40
fare and creative cocktails while listening to tunes by visiting DJs. The mood is always upbeat and attracts a broader crowd at this venue. Lastly, our signature restaurant, Hadaba, celebrates the atmosphere and flavours of Arabian nights with Levantine slowcooked dishes and smoked delicacies. The restaurant is split over two floors, with a central staircase that gives way to expansive views of the stunning Maldivian seascape.
As the General Manager for the opening of SO/ Maldives, what key strategies are you implementing to ensure a successful launch? Opening a hotel requires careful planning, creativity, and a deep understanding of our local community and target market(s). We’ve spent an extraordinary amount of time connecting with our local community, fostering partnerships, building our target audience, and much more. Above all, I continuously evaluate and adjust our strategy based on current market demands and feedback from our partners and guests to maximise our success. That, in my point of view, is the key to success. You have to be adaptable and fluid.
With the opening of SO/ Maldives in a competitive market, what strategies will you employ to ensure ongoing innovation and maintain a competitive edge in the luxury hospitality sector? We have a fantastic team, and I make sure to have conversations with all departments – spa, rooms, culinary, sales and marketing, finance, etc. - so I can better understand and appreciate the level of expertise they already provide and what I can do to support them. With that said, my role goes beyond the day-to-day at the helm of SO/ Maldives. Not only do I ensure that the resort’s impeccable standards and operations remain intact, but I’m also deeply involved in strategic planning, brand partnerships, and pushing the envelope on innovation. My passion for this property drives me to envision a hotel experience that’s the best in the Maldives and on a global stage.
Could you share any specific initiatives or signature experiences that will distinguish SO/ Maldives from other luxury resorts in the region? SO/ Maldives is only a 15-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport, making us one of the most accessible luxury 5-star resorts in the Maldives – there are no small seaplanes here. Most resorts take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to travel from Male Airport, so this alone is a massive advantage for our guests and a key differentiator. While our villas are suited to couples enjoying a romantic vacation, our villa collection is really for everyone. The resort’s amenities and accommodations are perfect for families and friends travelling together. Family Beach Pool Villa with Capsule features fun adjoining sleep pods perfect for young travellers. There is a wide selection of activities and areas customised to younger guests’ ages and needs – whether it’s making new friends at The Zone (Teen’s Club) or The Nest (Kids Club), plus a myriad of water sports available too. Babysitting services are also available on the property.

My journey across diverse luxury brands has catalysed my vision at SO/ Maldives. I’ve consistently challenged conventional norms, believing firmly in progression and innovation. My mantra isn’t about exclusivity; it’s about accessibility for everyone. Advocating for inclusion and diversity has been a cornerstone of my career. My formative years in the Fashion and beauty industry, where diversity, inclusion, and creativity reign supreme, provided a crucial foundation. I’ve seamlessly translated these values into my roles within the hospitality domain. At SO/ Maldives, authenticity reigns: we embrace diversity and champion inclusivity - without exception. This ethos binds our team from inception, guiding our journey into the future as we sculpt the essence of SO/ Maldive experience that blends the thrill of the ocean with the serenity of the surroundings.

Steven Stefaniuk
General Manager at Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi Our team spoke with Steven Stefaniuk, the distinguished General Manager of Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi. With an impressive 22-year tenure in the industry, 18 of which have been devoted to the esteemed Fairmont brand, he stands as a paragon of excellence in the hospitality domain.
Could you please provide an overview of your professional background and key milestones that have led you to your current role as the General Manager of Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi? My journey in the industry commenced at a very young age. At 15, I stepped into my first hotel in a professional capacity. Following that, I worked in various independent restaurants, whether they were large international chains or individual restaurants. In 2002, I was keen to return to hotels and started at my first Fairmont hotel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. From there, I transitioned to several different properties, totalling 10 under the Fairmont FRHI or Accor brand, spending 18 years specifically with Fairmont hotels. Taking a four-year break, I worked in Saudi Arabia for the Movenpick brand, which was still under Accor. During my time there, I also acquired a second property. I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to arrive where I am now. Throughout my tenure at these 10 properties, I’ve been fortunate to experience different styles, from city centre and resort properties to all-suite accommodations. This diverse exposure has prepared me well for my work on this beautiful island.
With your extensive 18-year career in the industry, how has your experience been working for a renowned hospitality conglomerate like Accor & Fairmont Group? I’ve had the opportunity to work in ten different hotels across five different countries, experiencing diverse cultures for myself and my family. This exposure
to incredibly unique environments and cultures has been tremendous. Throughout my time with Fairmont, then FRHI, and Accor, I’ve witnessed the company undergo various transitions, almost completing a full circle. When I began, we were a single hotel company, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. Then, we acquired Raffles and Swiss Hotel, forming FRHI. Subsequently, Accor acquired us, and now we’re part of the Accor conglomerate, which includes 42 different hotel brands, with 90 of them being Fairmont Hotels. Presently, Accor is furthering the transition of Fairmont to give the brand more distinction, still within the Accor umbrella but establishing its unique identity within the group. This phase is now termed Fairmont 2.0, which I believe will significantly accelerate Fairmont’s growth as a unique and identifiable brand.
Maldives is one of the most iconic hospitality destinations in the world, and home to a number of leading resorts. What does Fairmont bring that is unique to the location? I think the starting point of what Fairmont brings to this location is more than a century of service excellence and experience. So, there is something to be said when you have that amount of historical experience you can bring to a destination like the Maldives. When Fairmont brings this, it adds that element of having the opportunity to really fine-tune every experience for our guests. Coupled with that is Fairmont’s pride in offering truly unique experiences. We talk about destinations with an unrivalled presence, and if you look around the surroundings, you can’t argue with that. We talk about

engaging service as a brand, and when you interact with our very talented team here, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Fairmont brings those elements to the Maldives, which truly sets us apart from every other property within the destination.
As someone who has overseen various hospitality properties, what do you believe are the key factors contributing to a luxury resort’s long-term success and sustainability? So, this lies in two elements. First, it’s an unwavering approach to excellence. In every aspect of everything that you do, it’s crucial not to compromise any sense of excellence and always strive for it. The second component is staying relevant, where properties must continuously reinvent themselves. If you lose your relevance with your customer base, you’re lost. Hence, we must always examine who our guests are and what kind of experience they seek, and we must ensure we stay relevant to that experience.
What are your aspirations for this prestigious property? My aspirations for Fairmont Maldives are straightforward: we’re the leading hotel throughout the entire Maldives when it comes to guest satisfaction, especially in experiential guest satisfaction, sustainability, colleague engagement, and financial performance.
For you personally, what is the most rewarding aspect of your job? The most rewarding aspects for me are twofold. One is when our brand promise comes to life. At Fairmont, we have a brand promise: turning moments into memories for our guests. When a guest is so captivated by the experience they have with us and express that this experience will stay with them for a lifetime, I’m not sure there’s anything more rewarding than that. The second aspect is the talent development of a young team. In this particular environment, when young Maldivians express their enjoyment of the industry so much that they aspire to become great hoteliers, it’s genuinely rewarding from a general manager’s perspective.
As a seasoned professional, what advice do you have for aspiring general managers and individuals pursuing careers in the hotel industry? I think the most important thing is that this industry is incredibly rewarding, yet it also demands an incredible amount of hard work. Sometimes, it might not seem that way on the surface. For instance, when you see a general manager entertaining guests in a restaurant, hosting cocktail events, or attending sales events, that’s only one small aspect of the role. The bigger aspect involves gaining a multitude of experiences in every different discipline within the business. Our industry encompasses numerous disciplines, and one must strive to become an expert in nearly all of them. You need expertise in sales and marketing, human resources, finance, rooms division, food and beverage, spa, engineering, and IT—essentially, understanding how each discipline interrelates to ensure the business’s success. I would advise learning as much as possible about each of these disciplines. Don’t shy away from hard work because that’s precisely what it requires. And when you do, enjoy the rewards as they come.

VIA Expansion Project Set to Accommodate 25 Million Passengers
The Maldivian government has launched a mega project to develop Velana International Airport (VIA) and an economic zone to accommodate 25 million passengers, marking a historic chapter in the Maldives’ aviation landscape. The initial phase of VIA’s development is on track for completion, with the opening of a new terminal accommodating 7.3 million passengers later this year. President Muizzu’s vision targets 25 million passengers over the next two decades. The new project includes a new domestic terminal capable of handling 2000 passengers per hour, a notable increase from its current capacity of 300 per hour. Simultaneously, a dedicated terminal for low-cost carriers with 1000 people per hour is planned. Additionally, a seaplane terminal on the nearby island of Furaanafushi is set to be developed, providing space for more operators in the country. Beyond terminal expansions, facilities to support increased operational capacity are planned. This encompasses the expansion
of the fuel farm from 15 million litres to 45 million litres and a subsequent increase to 100 million litres with the newly unveiled plan. Cargo handling capacity is expected to rise from the recently developed 100 thousand metric tonnes to 300,000 metric tonnes by the completion of the next phase. Furthermore, a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility adhering to EASA standards will be established. The expansion project will introduce various new facilities and services. A significant feature is the creation of a special economic zone for VIA, with Funadhoo Island developed as a transit hub for VIA passengers. Modern airport services will be implemented, including transit hotels, shopping centres, restaurants, and necessary amenities. A monorail system will link the transit hub and seaplane terminal island to the main airport.

The third Manta Retreat will focus entirely on meeting the manta rays that call the island’s surrounding waters their home and their protection and ocean conservation. Meral Hafeez, the Manta Trust base leader at InterContinental Maldives, will lead the retreat and take participants along to uncover the secrets of manta rays. “Most of my days are spent in the water looking for manta rays to record and observe their behaviour to gain vital information relevant to their protection. No matter how many times I’m lucky enough to encounter these animals, each interaction feels like seeing them for the first time – the sense of awe never diminishes. I look forward to sharing the wonders of Maldivian marine life and manta rays with the participants of the Manta Retreat. The ocean is full of surprises, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience their first manta ray and the wonders of the deep!” The Maamunagau Lagoon is home to a juvenile manta ray aggregation point and a significant research ground for the Manta Trust team. Guests will have the chance to meet manta rays up close and get in touch with the research that the Manta Trust team has been conducting on the resort since 2019. As part of their research, the team identifies and records the young manta ray pubs in the lagoon based on their unique belly prints. Participants will learn all about the procedure in the Manta ID workshop and also get to adopt and name a manta ray.
Following the launch of the Manta Retreat in 2022, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort invites guests to the third Manta Retreat, which will take place in March 2024. Spreading curiosity and excitement to learn about manta rays and their natural habitat, the Manta Retreat forms a great platform to learn, explore and understand these gentle giants and the work of the Manta Trust. Created for travellers who want to experience a little bit extra, who are interested in adding true value to their vacations, and who do not say ‘no’ to an adventure, Participants can look forward to spending some refreshing and exciting days with the island-based Manta Trust team and some close-up time with manta rays in the resort’s very own lagoon.
The manta retreat will take place from 9th to 12th March 2024, and included are several snorkelling and research trips, on-hand educational workshops that involve the work of the Manta Trust team, corals and a manta ray adoption. The purpose of the Manta Retreat is to educate participants and ocean lovers on manta rays and their protection whilst raising funds to support the work of the Manta Trust. Guests staying at InterContinental Maldives also have the opportunity to enjoy the luxury resort’s facilities as well as their villa or residence accommodation. There is plenty to keep adults and children entertained in case some family members or travel partners are not participating in the retreat. For certified divers, options are available to ensure all guests find their way of interacting with manta rays. Dedicated dive spots are in the area around the resort that allow divers to observe the natural manta ray ‘spa’, known as cleaning stations, showcasing the incredible symbiosis of marine life in the Maldives.
