PEOPLE

Ibrahim Shareef

Group Director of Sales & Marketing at Furaveri Maldives

We had the privilege of interviewing Ibrahim Shareef, the Group Director of Sales & Marketing at Furaveri Maldives, delving into his captivating career journey that paved the way for his current role.

In this interview, he shares insights into staying informed about international market trends and adapting commercial strategies for Furaveri Maldives’ culturally rich clientele.

Could you briefly outline your career journey and highlight the key experiences that have led you to the position of Group Director of Sales & Marketing at Furaveri Maldives?

My hospitality journey started with a travel agency that my uncle owned, Sea N See, in an era where the internet was a luxury. I started from the Reservations & Marketing department while I was in school. After higher studies, I was assigned to the Sales and Marketing department and spent eight more years there. In 2007, I moved to AAA Hotels & Resorts as an Assistant Sales and Marketing Manager and climbed up to the position of General Manager – Contracting. I joined Furaveri Maldives in 2018 as the Director of Sales and Marketing. Since then, this is my home.

How do you stay informed about international market trends and adapt your commercial strategies to cater to a diverse and culturally rich clientele at Furaveri Maldives?

A combination of experience and constant research on the developments of the future travel industry is the key to understanding trends and adapting to the changes. Maintaining a close relationship with industry professionals helps as well.  Constant research, feedback from our clients and knowledge of customers’ buying behaviour are crucial elements, too.  We try to cater to the needs of our valued clients, from very simple requests to sophisticated ones.  We diversify our

offers and services to tailor those to the needs of our clients in order to excel in our performance and service delivery. We infuse those findings into our commercial strategy to cater to our diverse and culturally rich clientele.

Could you share the unique experiences that make Furaveri Maldives stand out from other resorts in Raa Atoll?

Furaveri Maldives is one of the best islands in the Maldives. Its natural beauty is breathtaking. During the development of the island and to date, the natural vegetation has been kept intact and has been a priority to maintain. The core aspects of the island, nature, culture and wellness are the three fundamental pillars on which the resort was built, and service delivery is embraced.

The location of the island is unique too; the incredible house reef just a few strokes from the beach and proximity to world-class dive sites and feeding stations of the pelagic are the product’s unique identity, like the easy access to the UNESCO Biosphere. While the natural beauty compliments the island, the resort was developed to give space and privacy to our guests in the lush natural surroundings. Did you know that we have one of the best wellness villages in the Maldives?

It is true.  We have the largest wellness villages in the Maldives in a uniquely designed area offering a holistic approach to well-being that is set within the lush foliage to give the client the most natural sights and sounds of an island.

47 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAR 2024

Furaveri Maldives is owned, built, and operated by local management, delivering authentic Maldivian experiences that focus on bringing unique and luxurious Maldivian hospitality. We are focused on acquiring local talent to maintain our unique service offering, and all these help us to stand out.

What approaches are used to establish and nurture relationships with travel agencies, tour operators, and other key stakeholders to drive business growth at the property?

We believe in building lasting relationships, and relationship marketing is an integral part of our sales & marketing strategy. Our partners, the tour operators and travel agents are vital for our success. We meet them regularly during trade events and visit them personally during our travels. We invite them to visit the property for first-hand experience of the product they are selling. We listen to our tour operators and travel agents carefully, and based on their comments and concerns, we refine our products and services to deliver a positive and superior experience. For Furaveri Maldives, our local travel partners and media are also part of our success.

How would you collaborate with other departments to ensure that the commercial strategies align with the overall guest satisfaction and brand positioning goals?

The sales & Marketing department does not work alone, and when we develop sales and marketing strategies, we discuss extensively with all operational departments. It is a collaborative effort between all departments.  At least once a month, we meet to refer back to what we did right and what went wrong. We discuss and try to find solutions to overcome any issues in order to refine our efforts towards overall guest satisfaction. We see success as a feast for our collaborative efforts over the past few years.

How do you see your role contributing to the overall success and growth of Furaveri Maldives?

When a team works together to achieve targets, that is my success. I believe in collaborative and collective efforts for the overall growth and success of the property. And to bring individuals together as a team makes me proud.

I have a good relationship with the management and board of directors. Communication between the board of directors is very open. It is quite convenient to elaborate what we envision and what we are trying to achieve. Also, working with the resort operational team and head of the departments has brought overall success.

We have maintained and built on our trust with partners and guests. We have seen steady growth over the eight years since the resort’s opening. Our huge repeater percentage is a testament to our success. On 25th January 2024, as we celebrated our 8th anniversary, we are proud to announce the launching of two fine dining outlets: a dedicated vegetarian restaurant on the beach – Ocean Spice, and a Mediterranean restaurant overwater – Olives and Vine. We will continue to add more value by curating a superior product that offers a delightful culinary journey and a holistic wellness lifestyle brought together in the most beautiful natural island home setting.

Mohamed Shamaan Waheed The Controller General of Immigration

We had the opportunity to speak with Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, the Controller General of Immigration, as he described his vision for the critical role of immigration in promoting tourism and providing a memorable experience for visitors to the Maldives.

As the prospective head of Maldives Immigration, could you share your vision for the role of immigration in promoting tourism and ensuring a positive experience for visitors in the Maldives?

When I was entrusted with the position of Controller General of Immigration, I understood the profound responsibility that came with it, given that safeguarding the borders of the Maldives stands as a pivotal role within the organisation. The Maldives, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, holds tourism as the cornerstone of the economy.

As the forefront gatekeepers, we take pride in providing a warm and hospitable welcome to every tourist arriving in the Maldives. Our commitment to hospitality is evident, even with the smiles of our officers and the positive vibe created among visitors.

In fact, in 2021, Immigration commenced a loyalty program exclusively for tourists. This is the first time immigration has initiated such a tourist-related programme, and we are keen on bringing it to the next level with changes while providing exclusive rewards to members as well as great opportunities for our partners.

Thus, our approach strikes a harmonious balance between warmth and diligence, making the Maldives an exemplar in providing a secure and delightful experience for all who choose to explore our shores.

How do you plan to foster effective communication and collaboration with other government agencies, tourism boards, and private sector partners to create a seamless and welcoming environment for tourists in the Maldives?

We have a close relationship with other government agencies. We have been discussing more collaborations with the Ministry of Tourism, MMPRC, MACL, and other tourism boards and private sector parties.

Coordination, collaboration, and cooperation are the keys. Our goal is to streamline immigration clearance, ensuring a seamless border experience for visitors. Even with various limitations, our relentless efforts are geared towards welcoming our visitors more conveniently. Opening of the Velaana International Airport terminal is very promising, with the increased number of counters for border clearance.

As of right now, on arrival, there are 25 immigration counters and 3 E-gates, which is expected to be increased to 28 counters with 7 E-gates. Likewise, for departure from 15 counters and 2 E-gates, it is to increase to 20 counters and 6 E-gates. We are steadfast in our commitment to providing a positive and efficient experience for all who choose the Maldives as their destination. I look forward to working with the related stakeholders to make it happen.

Can you discuss how you would leverage technological advancements to streamline immigration services and enhance the overall tourist experience?

In the realm of delivering efficient services, the pivotal role of technology cannot be overstated, particularly in our contemporary world, where online accessibility and convenience have become the norm. During the last few years, immigration services have also undergone a transformative shift in technological advancement. Our innovative IMUGA platform stands as a testament to this progress, now reaching an impressive monthly user base of over 12 million. Notably, the ‘Traveller Declaration’ form, a vital component of our system, is seamlessly processed through this platform, enhancing both efficiency and accessibility for travellers.

The ultimate goal is to facilitate a seamless entry and exit experience for all travellers. This strategic initiative aligns with our commitment to harnessing technology not just for the sake of modernisation but to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of immigration services. As we continue to evolve in this technological era, our pursuit remains centred on creating a more responsive, user-friendly, and intelligent immigration system for the benefit of all those who pass through our borders.

How would you enhance the efficiency of immigration procedures while maintaining security standards?

In navigating the right balance between facilitation and security, our approach revolves around the strategic integration of cutting-edge technology and the adoption of industry best practices. Embracing new technological advancements allows us to enhance the efficiency of our processes while fortifying our security measures.

The commitment to ongoing training and the incorporation of innovative technologies underscores our dedication to maintaining a dynamic and adaptive stance in the everevolving landscape of Maldives Immigration. Thorough measures are in place to examine all necessary documentation, ensuring that the safety and well-being of our nation remain paramount.

How would you design immigration processes to provide luxury travellers with a premium and efficient experience without compromising security?

To elevate the immigration experience for luxury travellers, we currently provide exclusive clearance during arrival and departure. This ensures a swift and tailored process, acknowledging the unique needs of luxury travellers.

Looking ahead, we hope to implement even more sophisticated and individualised services at the new terminal at Velaana International Airport, which is guided by the vision of H.E. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

PEOPLE

Tero Taskila Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Beond

We had the privilege of sitting down with Tero Taskila, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Beond, where he has played a pivotal role in establishing the world’s first premium leisure airline.

In the interview, Tero delves into his career journey, highlighting key milestones and experiences that shaped his professional path. With diverse roles as an Investor, Advisor, Entrepreneur, Coach, and Father, Tero has been instrumental in steering Beond’s global expansion to encompass over 32 aircraft and 60 destinations.

Can you provide a brief overview of your career journey, highlighting key milestones and experiences that shaped your professional path?

As Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Beond, the world’s first premium leisure airline, I played a key role in establishing Beond as a carrier in the Maldives.

I am an Investor, Advisor, Entrepreneur, Coach, and Father who values authenticity, integrity, and innovation. I have held C-level positions in multicultural organisations of up to 5000 employees and a turnover of 3 Billion USD across various businesses and industries. I am solution-oriented and driven to break barriers to growth and profitability.

As a global leader in Aviation, Tech, and Consultancy, I have guided large organisations through financial and operational transition and restructuring. I am known for devising clear strategic plans coupled with solid execution and robust processes.

Beond is a global business, expanding its operations to more than 32 aircraft and 60 destinations around the world. It will be a new type of luxury brand integrating more deeply into the lifestyle of affluent and aspirational clientele. This needs innovation, cultural awareness

and global partnerships, which I have from setting up and turning around businesses across the world in the areas of health, technology and aviation.

What factors have contributed to your success, and how have you applied these in your role as CEO of Beond?

I have always had the drive to do better, and I learned from playing sports professionally that you should always strive for more. The moment you think you have reached perfection is the moment that you should stop. I never strive for perfection; I strive to be a better version of myself, and I apply that same mentality to my business. It comes with finding the right people for your team and working with and building a solid team of individuals who motivate and challenge you and increase your ability to be better, which is one of the essential factors in success. My team makes up the environment and culture. As the CEO of Beond, I always look to improve my team’s environment and happiness. There is also an element of never giving up. No matter what hurdle comes your way, it would be best if you always looked for a solution rather than feeling or thinking there is no way around a problem that comes your way. Finding a solution is finding a different route to the same destination.

55 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAR 2024

What sets Beond apart, and how have you ensured that the company remains relevant and innovative?

One exciting thing is that we have hired people who have been working in the industry for over 20 years in the world’s most luxurious and profitable airlines. We have taken the best practices from those airlines, and because of our clean slate approach, we can do something unique while ensuring that we utilise the best practices and learn not to carry their bad practices. This allows us to do things more efficiently right from the beginning. We are working with industry-leading partners to ensure that everything we do is sustainable and cutting-edge. Everything is tailored to delight the customers and provide them with an unforgettable luxury experience.

True luxury can be subjective and mean different things to different people, but it typically goes beyond just the material and the superficial aspects of luxury. True luxury often refers to a high level of quality, exclusivity, and authenticity, as well as a sense of purpose and meaning. Overall, true luxury is more about the intrinsic value of an item or experience rather than just its price or status. It is about quality, exclusivity, authenticity, and purpose.

The real luxury we can offer is experiencing something exceptional that enhances the client’s life.

Our service is ideally characterised by attention to detail, personalised attention, and a focus on creating a memorable and exceptional experience for the customer. Overall, luxury service provides a seamless and exceptional experience that exceeds the customer’s expectations and creates a lasting impression.

What are some of the major challenges the company has faced thus far?

The major challenge is starting an airline from scratch! Starting an airline is never easy, and it keeps our team on its toes. We have found a great reception from our investors, from the government of Maldives, from our airport partners globally, and from aircraft lessors. Our most significant challenge was to source and transform an aircraft into the Beond aircraft — our first Airbus aircraft. It used to seat around 120 people, and we have completely revamped it to seat 44 in an all-lay flat configuration. That is not an easy project — to go from design concept to actual aircraft flying passengers in a luxury setting. Everything has to be perfect.

What role do you see technology playing in the future of the industry, and how is Beond adapting to these changes?

Business intelligence (BI) has been a critical tool for organisations to gain insights from their data. Still, with

the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), many are now looking to move beyond BI to more advanced data analytics.

BI has been the buzzword for a good decade now. It is a process of collecting, analysing, and presenting data in a way that helps organisations make informed decisions. BI tools often use descriptive analytics to identify patterns and trends and provide a historical view of data. These insights can then be used to optimise operations, improve performance, and increase profitability.

We are moving onto AI now, which is the flavour of the month (or rather the new decade), a subset of computer science that focuses on developing algorithms that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as perception, reasoning, and decision-making. AI tools can analyse large datasets and learn from patterns to provide predictive and prescriptive analytics, which can help organisations make better decisions in real time.

How is the company contributing to the nation’s aviation industry, and how is the company benefiting the clients?

Many destinations, like the Maldives, rely heavily on tourism but will be highly dependent on foreign airlines to bring passengers.

The national carriers globally produce 10% of the GDP through the employment and spending created by airlines and their supply chain, the trade, tourism, and investment flow. This benefit is currently missing from the Maldives. Beond will play a vital role in the island nation’s tourism and transport sectors. We want to create 200 jobs by introducing our new luxury airline.

Maldives is one of the most attractive destinations in the world. The point-to-point connection is our most prominent and significant competitive advantage for travellers. We will fly directly to the stunning islands of the Maldives from more destinations than anyone else, offering the ideal arrival and departure timings. Combine that with the luxury of a private jet-like experience. Nevertheless, we do not see ourselves as the ultraluxury airline in the market. The concept of flying the modern A321 LR and XLR competing with the widebodies of other airlines flying to the Maldives provides us with a significant price advantage. We see ourselves as the price leader in the market, enabling people to travel in premium classes for the first time.

But our story is not only to the Maldives - we are currently looking at 40 more countries and destinations that need a strong local carrier to reduce the dependence on foreign operators. We would benefit from a significant boost to their GDP.

Inside the Innovative Design of Zamani Islands

66 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAR 2024
EDITOR’S PICKS

The recently unveiled Zamani Islands project has fundamentally reimagined the conceptual foundations upon which resort structures are traditionally built. At the forefront of this groundbreaking design is Shaun Killa, the visionary design director and founder of Killa Design, who graciously unveiled the intricacies of this avant-garde project in this exclusive feature.

Killa Design has skillfully intertwined inspiration from natural elements, sustainability initiatives, and cutting-edge technologies to craft a resort that stands at the height of luxury and eco-friendliness.

Inspired by Nature

The master plan for Zamani Islands draws inspiration from the enchanting natural formations of the lagoon atolls. The design concept takes cues from the wind, waves, and tidal currents that shape the islands, creating a synergy between nature and the multitude of resort experiences. Sculpted by environmental surroundings, the islands prioritise maximum beach access and panoramic views, offering guests an immersive connection with the surrounding lagoons and horizon.

Shared Values and Sustainable Vision

Killa Design’s involvement in the Zamani Islands project was propelled by a shared vision with Atoll Estates – the creation of a highly sustainable luxury resort powered entirely by renewable energy. The architects, known for their expertise in zero energy/water/waste ultra-luxury resorts such as Sherbara Resort in Saudi Arabia, were instrumental in materialising the client’s vision and setting new benchmarks for eco-friendly luxury hospitality in the Maldives and beyond.

Further to the sustainability accruements, the owners wanted to create an innovative hospitality destination differentiating from other resorts through design and guest experiences, which is at the core of Killa Designs’ approach to resorts.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation

Shaun acknowledges the distinctive challenges of offshore resort construction, yet Killa Design boldly addresses them through innovative building technologies. Employing a modular construction methodology, the team ensured high quality and durability throughout the resort. Sustainability goals were met through the use of regionally available materials, including reclaimed timber, bamboo, and recycled aluminium, minimising environmental impact and reducing the resort’s embedded carbon footprint.

67 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAR 2024
68 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAR 2024

Furthermore, their design seamlessly integrates biophilic elements, such as green spaces, natural light, and ventilation systems. These features not only enhance guests’ well-being but also contribute to a reduction in energy consumption.

Cutting-Edge Technologies at Play

The integration of cutting-edge technologies for the project further enhances the uniqueness of Zamani Islands’ design. Killa Design leveraged BIM (Building Information Modelling) software to meticulously model every resort aspect, offering the owners a virtual reality experience during the design phase. Parametric and regenerative software optimised design elements, improved buildability, and contributed to unforgettable guest experiences within the resort.

Sustainability Embedded in Every Detail

Zamani Islands proudly stands as the Maldives’ first 100% renewable energypowered property, and Killa Design’s emphasis towards sustainability is evident in every aspect of the design and development. Building Integrated Photo-Voltaic (BIPV) systems harness solar energy efficiently, harmonising with the resort’s aesthetic appeal. From conscientious material selection to implementing Agri-Photovoltaics and indoor farming, every detail is crafted to minimise environmental impact while nurturing local ecosystems.

Shaun Killa has expressed a sense of pride in the role played by his team in establishing a prospective benchmark for ecotourism with Zamani Islands. The belief is that this initiative will serve as an inspiration, not confined to the Maldives but extending globally, encouraging the development of more sustainable resorts. By setting new standards for environmentally conscious hospitality, he hopes to educate guests and encourage them to make more environmentally conscious choices in their vacation destinations and overall lives.

Atoll Estates’ Signature Architectural Direction

Amit Majumder & Dmitry Bourtov, the founders and curators of Atoll Estates, articulate the strategic reasoning behind their selection of Killa Design for the project:

“Our decision to appoint Shaun Killa and Killa Design as the master planner for Zamani Islands and architects of the most prominent resort within the development was a strategic choice inspired by their exceptional track record in creating visually striking, sustainable architectural marvels. Killa Design’s approach to design, which masterfully blends aesthetic elegance with environmental consciousness, resonates perfectly with the ethos of Atoll Estates and the vision of Zamani Islands. This collaboration is more than a partnership; it’s a harmonious fusion of shared values and innovative ideas, poised to set a new benchmark in luxury hospitality and environmental stewardship on a global stage.”

The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives Goes Green with Solar Power

The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives, a luxury resort located on Huruvalhi Island in the Raa Atoll, has announced the installation of solar panels as part of its commitment to sustainability and ecofriendly practices. The resort has been using solar energy as its main source of electricity since November 2023, with plans in place to have the island completely solar-powered.

“Replacing carbon-intensive products with climate-friendly alternatives is an important step in winning the climate battle. Currently, our new solar system has a capacity of 750 kW (kilowattpeak), which enables us to save about 230,000 litres of fuel per year. This translates to a reduction of 588.8 tons of CO2 emissions annually. We are testing the system and plan to substantially expand its capacity in the coming years,” said Boripat Louichareon, Managing Director of Standard Asia.

The solar panels are not the only green initiative that the resort has implemented. The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives, has also banned single-use plastic, replaced bottled water with glass bottles that are filled on-site, switched to low-wattage LED bulbs and eco-friendly

villa amenities, and composts its organic waste on a nearby island to fertilise its fruit and vegetable gardens.

The resort also encourages its guests and staff to use bicycles as their preferred mode of transportation alongside electric-powered buggies. At the Dive Center, holidaymakers can learn about the property’s Coral Conservation Initiative and visit the coral nursery, where a team of dive specialists restore the reef damaged by human activity and climate change to its healthy self by building a coral garden.

“Since the resort’s opening in 2019, we have been striving to run the island on clean energy instead of fossil fuels. Our solar project is an important step towards making The Standard Huruvalhi a carbon-neutral resort that preserves this stunning island that we call home,” added Louichareon.

Fushi’s Sustainability Lab: Celebrating the Art of Innovation

SUSTAINABILITY

Nestled on the shores of a private island in the secluded Shaviyani atoll, Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi stands as a beacon of innovation in the heart of the Maldives.

This exclusive retreat captivates not only with its breathtaking surroundings but also with a visionary approach to sustainability. The groundbreaking Sustainability Lab is at the forefront of this ingenuity, a pioneering initiative that sets Fairmont Maldives apart in eco-friendly luxury.

Innovative Sustainability Lab

This eco-education hub sets out to tackle the growing concern of single-use plastics in the Maldives, a region where tourism is flourishing but where the threat of plastic pollution looms large. The Sustainability Lab aims to be a beacon of change by transforming plastic waste into bespoke souvenirs and unique products. Specialised machinery within the lab processes plastic collected from the beach, reef, and ocean, turning it into exquisite furniture, useful stationery for local schools, and even turtle-shaped luggage tags for guests. With over 725 kg of plastic processed to date, Fairmont Maldives is significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

Community Upliftment and Education

Beyond its immediate impact, the Sustainability Lab is poised to become a recycling centre for the atoll and surrounding areas, fostering a culture of sustainability and accountability in local

communities. The resort actively involves nearby islands in its efforts, encouraging them to send their plastic waste for recycling rather than contributing to landfills or ocean pollution.

Educating Eco-Conscious Travellers

The Sustainability Lab serves as the epicentre of Fairmont Maldives’ broader sustainability initiatives, offering guests firsthand experiences in conservation research. Through educational programmes and activities, guests can actively participate in collecting plastic waste, learning about recycling processes, and creating their own sustainable products.

Programmes for Marine Conservation

Recognising the critical threat of plastic pollution to sea turtles, Fairmont Maldives has introduced the Turtle Ranger Programme. Guests can engage in conservation methods, assist in collecting Photo ID tracking data, and actively participate in protecting turtle nests. The resort’s Marine Biologists conduct workshops in the Sustainability Lab, transforming plastic waste into turtle-shaped products using innovative recycling machines.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

Cora Cora Maldives Attracts More Solo Female Travellers Since Receiving Top Global Award

The five-star Cora Cora Maldives has seen an impressive increase in the number of solo women visitors since being awarded the highly acclaimed SHe Travel Club Label this year. The glorious resort, in the tropical paradise of Raa Atoll, welcomed the same number of women travelling on their own between May 2023 (when it received the award) and December 2023 as it did from October 2021 (when it opened) to May 2023.

Female travel has become a major phenomenon over the past few years with companies dedicated to woman-only clientele increasing by 230%. Overall, women make up 64% of travellers worldwide, while only 36% are male. And women are showing an increasing desire to go it alone – almost £100 billion will be spent by women on travel in 2023.

Cora Cora Maldives was the first five-star resort and second resort overall in the Maldives to receive the SHe Travel Club Label. Having been awarded the Gold Status, the all-inclusive luxury resort was officially acknowledged as safe and friendly, particularly for

We ensure that every member of staff interacts with single travelling guests in a certain manner and undertakes incredible training the SHe Travel Club label provides, thus ensuring our female guests’ needs are met in a welcoming and safe environment.”

The SHe Travel Club conducts studies in several countries to understand what women expect and need

when they travel. ‘SHe, Safe and Happy everywhere’ is the promise to all women from the independent and global SHe hotel labelling organisation. The SHe Travel Club mark of approval offers peace of mind and quality assurance away from home.
