Justin Swart
General Manager at Cora Cora Maldives
We had the chance to chat with Justin Swart, the General Manager at Cora Cora Maldives, where he shared insights into his remarkable two-decade journey in the hospitality industry.
With over 15 years of experience in the luxury hotel industry, Justin’s career has been a journey of continuous learning and honing leadership skills through various roles, ranging from food and beverage to sales and marketing. He also emphasised the importance of fostering a dynamic environment where individuals can excel and innovate, a key factor in differentiating Cora Cora Maldives in the competitive Maldivian resort landscape.
Please tell us a bit about yourself, your professional background, and key milestones that have led you to your current role as the General Manager of Cora Cora Maldives.
Thinking back now, it’s been two decades since the journey started with Starwood. Throughout, it’s always been a continuous process of learning and improving my leadership skills. I’ve held many diverse roles within my career, spanning from food and beverage to sales and marketing, wellness, and various other positions. This has helped me grasp the whole industry and develop a comprehensive overview of what is required to succeed in this industry.
You need teams and people to achieve great milestones. So, a particular milestone is always creating an environment where our team members can express themselves, excel, and push the envelope.
Could you share what sets Cora Cora Maldives apart in the competitive resort landscape of the Maldives?
So many new properties are coming up, and everybody wants to differentiate themselves. What’s true to Cora Cora Maldives is our unwavering commitment to the guest experience.
It’s not a set experience where everything is set in stone. We’re quite dynamic, a great team that loves to experiment and really sets the bar high. Our commitment to the guest experience, along with the landscape of pure natural beauty and innovative design, and our commitment to art and culture, with our heritage site and museum on the island, will set us apart. Just bringing unique experiences to our guests will set us apart and keep us innovative.
Your multicultural experience across various resorts in Thailand has been diverse. How do you think this diversity contributes to your approach to embracing and celebrating the ethos of “Freedom” at Cora Cora Maldives?
Diversity gives us a whole new dynamic in the resort, offering not just our guests a unique experience but also our team members. In an environment where over twenty-plus nationalities work collectively, you learn quite a lot of new things and appreciate the finer things in life.
Diversity also creates an opportunity to challenge ourselves. Through those challenges, our guests can experience vast, new, innovative ways of hospitality, and our team can also experience vast, new ways of communicating with our audience and among the team.

PEOPLE
Cora Cora Maldives is renowned for its unique cultural, culinary, and experiential offerings. How do you envision amplifying these aspects to provide a distinctive experience for guests?
We take pride in not just providing a luxurious experience; it’s within our DNA to create unique moments for our guests. We’re a dynamic team, and we must embrace continuous innovation and rethink what luxury and hospitality are all about. Our team, again, is very dynamic, and every day, we come up with new things. That innovation will help us stay at the forefront of hospitality.
Your dedication to customer satisfaction is evident. How do you plan to ensure that the Cora Cora Maldives continues to uphold and enhance this commitment to guest experiences?
Customer satisfaction is at the core of our mission at Cora Cora Maldives. We invest in our people through new training programs, stay acute to our guests’ feedback, and implement new technology, all enhancing our guests’ experiences and satisfaction. These will all help us to keep in tune with our guests and ensure that we provide the guest experience that Cora Cora Maldives is now renowned for.
What excites you the most about the Cora Cora Maldives family, and what unique contributions do you hope to make to the resort’s journey of providing exceptional experiences?
The Cora Cora Maldives family is passionate about excelling and creating enhanced services for our guests. What excites me is working with this team to push the envelope, striving for what perceived luxury is, and actually excelling in it. The Maldives is renowned for its luxury, and we can go beyond that. I believe Cora Cora Maldives has that essence, and we’re very happy to push that forward.
Lastly, what advice do you have for aspiring individuals pursuing careers in this industry?
Service comes from the heart, and if you can always be genuine and authentic, you will go a very long way. Always be open to new challenges, always ask questions, and try to get as much experience all around the industry as possible. It’s great to specialise in a certain direction. Still, in hospitality, you’ll learn the industry’s dynamic if you get a feel for each outlet or each department in the organisation. It’s an amazing journey of discovery, not just as a career but for yourself as well.

Vishen Mootoo Commercial Director at Cora Cora Maldives
We recently had the privilege to interview Vishen Mootoo, the Commercial Director at Cora Cora Maldives, where he shared insights into his remarkable journey within the hospitality sector.
In the interview, Vishen highlighted how Cora Cora Maldives stays ahead of industry dynamics and competitor movements, the importance of gender diversity in his team, and how he fosters a collaborative environment where each member’s unique perspective contributes to collective success.
What inspired your journey into the hospitality industry, leading you to the role of Commercial Director at Cora Cora Maldives?
My whole family has worked in the hospitality industry. My father spent 41 years with the former Sun Resorts in Mauritius, now rebranded as Sun Life. It started at a young age, but subconsciously, I was training myself to become the Hotelier I am today.
I started as a sales coordinator and had good mentors who inspired me more and more in this industry. I was driven by results and have a competitive mind, so Sales & Marketing was the right direction to pursue.
Due to the leaders I have worked with, I have had the opportunity to showcase what I could bring to the table, opening doors for better opportunities. This has led me to work in Mauritius, Thailand, the UK, and finally, the Maldives.
I have had the opportunity to do pre-openings of resorts in both Mauritius & Maldives, and this has led me to learn more about the whole mechanism of how to do market research, pricing analysis, resort positioning, branding, PR/media collaboration and e-commerce. After pre-opening six resorts in the Indian Ocean and successfully opening Cora Cora Maldives, the management decided to give me the role of Commercial Director to lead the team with all the exciting projects we are working on and, most importantly, to support the team to keep Cora Cora Maldives in the spotlight.

PEOPLE
How do you stay ahead of industry dynamics and competitor movements, and how would you leverage this insight to uphold Cora Cora Maldives’ competitive advantage?
To stay relevant in today’s competitive world, you must be proactive and understand the customer’s basic demand and compete with fairness, focusing on what can be controlled, such as service, food and beverage quality or experiences. If you get the software right and the team is working in harmony, you already have an edge and can use that to navigate the market confidently. It will complement any strategy in place in the market, whether it is online or offline. We are in a buyer’s world, which many people still try to ignore. As hoteliers, we must understand what the various markets require to stay ahead of the competition.
How will you nurture partnerships with travel agencies and online booking platforms to optimise Cora Cora Maldives’ distribution channels?
Travel agencies (offline) have always been the “bread & butter” of our business at the destination, and this will not change any time soon. Strategies between both offline and online (retail) need to be clear from the start, as both segments are far apart in terms of requirements and end consumer mentality. At Cora Cora Maldives, we ensure that our pricing strategies are done in such a way that we benefit from both segments and achieve the set goals throughout the year.
Could you elaborate on your strategies for assembling and leading high-performing commercial teams, with a particular focus on fostering a culture of innovation and excellence?
I always look for an individual who has a passion, not necessarily for the hospitality industry, but a hunger to learn, develop, try new things, be bold in their approach, and have a proactive mindset, which is a must. I give them a degree of ‘carte blanche’ to make decisions and try things. Either it works, or it fails. They will learn from it and get better at the following projects that come their way. A good gender mix is also important, and diversity brings the team a much more positive atmosphere. We can explore much further and beyond because of the values that everyone brings to the table.
Could you outline your vision for Cora Cora Maldives’ future growth and expansion and your role in realising these aspirations as Commercial Director?
As I lead this young commercial team at Cora Cora Maldives and am always looking for exciting new projects to embark on and develop, my vision for the future is to try the unconventional, elevate the brand and make a difference in our competitive markets.

Khun Jean-Louis Ripoche General Manager at Dusit Thani Maldives
We had the pleasure of speaking with Khun Jean-Louis Ripoche, the General Manager at Dusit Thani Maldives, who shared insights from his extensive fourdecade career in the hospitality industry. With 25 years in leadership roles at prestigious hotels and resorts worldwide, Khun Jean-Louis brings a wealth of experience to his current position.
During our interview, he discussed market shifts and the key factors that set Dusit Thani Maldives apart in the competitive resort landscape. He also emphasised the resort’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting its crucial role in the resort’s operations.
Could you share the story of how you came to be a part of Dusit Thani Maldives and what aspects of the brand attracted you to take on the role of General Manager?
I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 30 years, and it has been a passion of mine. This industry allows me to travel and explore various cultures, nationalities, and customs around the world. I love my work; it’s a passion that presents new and unique experiences every day. Working in hotels is vibrant as you interact with customers from diverse nationalities and environments. It provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in a country’s culture, which is an invaluable experience that cannot be replaced by any book.
After my previous experience in the Maldives, I wanted to explore the possibility of working at a more luxurious property. I wasn’t specifically looking to return to the Maldives, as I had spent 8 years working in Thailand before, which is very dear to me. When the opportunity with Dusit Thani arose, I was intrigued. The Dusit
Thani brand appealed to me because of its Thai hospitality. They offered me the chance to return to the Maldives, combining my past experience there with Thai hospitality and my time in Thailand; it felt like the perfect match. Returning to the Maldives will allow me to bring my knowledge and experience to benefit both the company and the Maldives.
In comparing the Maldivian tourism scene with your past roles, what key differences stand out, and what tailored strategies do you have in mind for Dusit Thani Maldives?
We are seeing a change in the market. If I look back, about 15 years ago, when I started in the Maldives, the visitors were predominantly couples. Now, we are seeing more families, which is a noticeable trend. Previously, Asian clientele mainly travelled for honeymoons, but now we see them returning as families. It’s amazing to witness, like the Chinese family I recently saw returning after 10 years, this time with their child. This highlights the lasting impression the Maldives have on people who are now bringing their children along.
59 TRAVEL TRADE MALDIVES | MAY 2024
PEOPLE
This shift in the market requires us to adapt our product to be more family-friendly while maintaining the romantic and luxurious atmosphere Dusit Thani Maldives is renowned for. We need to enhance our offerings to meet the expectations of families, which includes providing more activities. For example, we plan to introduce more attractions for teenagers, such as an entertainment pavilion. This pavilion will serve as an open playground where children of all ages can play and be with their parents, something that is currently lacking at Dusit Thani Maldives.
Can you share specific features or aspects within Dusit Thani Maldives that you consider a hidden gem, and how do you plan to highlight them for guests?
Dusit Thani is located in an amazing setting next to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This proximity is a significant advantage for Dusit Thani and the Maldives, as we are the closest resort to this Reserve. It’s a hidden gem that needs to be highlighted. For Dusit Thani Maldives and the island itself, I aim to elevate the beauty of this already stunning island and its people.
How do you intend to integrate sustainable practices and initiatives into the operations of Dusit Thani Maldives?
We are already highly active in sustainability efforts in the Maldives, particularly in waste management. These practices extend not only here but across the entire Dusit Group. As part of the Dusit Group, we are committed to eliminating plastic use entirely. This means no more plastic bottles and no more plastic amenities in guest rooms.
Additionally, we are focusing on sustainable food practices and supporting the local community. We recently visited a hydroponic farm nearby, which will be a significant step for us, and we also have our own garden.
Solar panels are a top priority for us when expanding. While we already have solar panels that subsidise up to 7% of our energy, we aim to cover more roof space to increase this capacity. Overall, we are proud of our sustainability efforts at Dusit Thani Maldives.
With the responsibility of being part of a UNESCO Biosphere, what specific conservation initiatives do you plan to undertake at Dusit Thani Maldives to contribute to preserving the biosphere?
Preserving the environment is crucial, especially the reef. If we destroy the reef, we destroy the environment, and there will be no reason for the mantas to be
here. Our commitment is to preserve this underwater garden that surrounds our island, which is also our top priority. To achieve this, we are educating people on proper snorkelling practices. Some may not realise the importance of not touching or stepping on the coral, so we educate all our guests and staff.
How will you ensure that both guests and employees experience the warmth and hospitality synonymous with Dusit?
One word that sums up both aspects is “respect.” As a multinational company, we welcome guests from all over the world, and it is crucial to respect every culture, regardless of gender or religion. This respect is essential for our reputation and for me personally. It is also important for our staff to respect their work and recognise their hard work.
How do you foresee travel dynamics changing, and what adjustments do you plan to make at Dusit Thani Maldives to cater to these shifts in guest behaviour?
I believe that guests today are changing their expectations of the Maldives. They no longer see it solely as a place to relax on the beach; they are looking for activities and experiences. Therefore, we must offer more attractive and educational activities, such as visiting local farms or islands, to enhance their stay.
In terms of dining, there has been a shift from half board or full board towards all-inclusive packages. However, all-inclusive packages can be misleading, as some properties may compromise on quality. Our commitment is to provide top-quality choices. Even with the half-board option, guests can enjoy a variety of dining options across our outlets, moving away from the typical buffet style.
We aim to elevate the all-inclusive experience. Traditionally, all-inclusive packages were perceived as catering to a lower market segment, which we believe is not accurate. Our goal is to enhance the quality of our all-inclusive offerings while managing costs. We want to adapt to the needs of our clientele, who deserve top quality and value for money in their experience.
